That post that was like “imagining your blorbo doing something you do” was so real, every time I go to a place or do a thing in the midst of it I’m like “Wow, this is so awesome. Now time to imagine what would happen if My Guys were doing this thing too!”
#what if my characters went downhill skiing. what if they went to like a ski resort. what then#ahti wouldnt know how to ski because running and biking are already a lot for him but karleeen famously skiis sometimes#although im not personally sure if there are any good skiing places in the southwest whoops#(southwest finland)#however I KNOW how to ski and I LIKE skiing so. i think its vital that at least some of my guys do skiing too#skiing heals the soul and also maybe breaks your bones if you do the downhill variant#but you just have to be careful :) ;)#i should draw a little picture to commemorate the occasion (skiing)#not fish

Where can I find Free Palestine protests and Ceasefire protests?
A super international and continually updated list of actions can be found at Samidoun: Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network's:

Calendar of Resistance for Palestine 2024
They list events by date, then alphabetically by country, then by city - and it's common for them to have dozens of actions listed for a single date, especially on the weekends.
The United States especially often has 40+ events on a single day, especially on the weekends.
Events are posted with links to the event info posted by whoever's hosting the vast majority of the time.
Look blow the read-more for a list of many of the countries that have been on this protest calendar, in alphabetical order, since I know so many websites/lists of actions are country-specific
*Obviously this isn't the only good source of listings for protest events - there are many others. This is by far the biggest/most international roundup I've found, though, so I started with this. If you know another good place for finding ceasefire protests/events, please feel free to add it in the notes, bc I'm planning to put a bigger roundup together once I find enough other sites
Countries that Samidoun has listed/does list protests for include (in alphabetical order):
North America:
United States
Canada
Mexico
Puerto Rico (listed separately in anti-colonial solidarity)
Hawai'i (listed separately in anti-colonial solidarity)
Europe:
Austria
Belgium
Bulgaria
Denmark
England
Finland
France
Germany
Greece
Hungary
Iceland
Ireland
Italy
Netherlands
Norway
Portugal
Romania
Scotland
Serbia
Spain
Sweden
Switzerland
Wales
SWANA Region (Southwest Asia/North Africa)*:
Bahrain
Iraq
Jordan
Kuwait
Lebanon
Palestine
Tunisia
Turkiye (Turkey)
*Samidoun notes that "We know that these events are mainly international and that the Arab people are marching everywhere for Palestine – we will be honored to add more Arab events whenever we are informed!"
Asia:
Bangladesh
India
Indonesia
Japan
Malaysia
Maldives
Pakistan
South Korea
Africa:
Kenya
Mauritius
Nigeria
South Africa
Tanzania
Tunisia
*Duplicating North African countries (well, Tunisia) here from the SWANA list btw
South America:
Brazil
Colombia
Chile
Peru
Venezuela
Australia and Oceania:
Aotearoa (New Zealand)
Australia

Hei kaikki! I was given the honor to be Paimio Pride's 2024 patron. Paimio is a lovely town of Southwest Finland, with an active and energetic LGBTQIA+ community. Here is my patronage statement :
"Throughout Europe and the world, the state of LGBTQIA+ rights is worrisome. The rise of populism and fascism has direct repercussions on our lives. In this context, the safety and sense of belonging that our local communities provide is crucial. That's why I am honoured to be Paimio Pride's patron for 2024. Everyone deserves access to a supportive environment and to see how their own community shows up for them. May diversity be celebrated in every corner of Paimio!"
Hyvää Pride-viikkoa, Paimio! Sophie

Birka
Birka, located on the island of Björkö in present-day Sweden, was an important trading center and strongly fortified town in the Viking Age which flourished from the 8th through the 10th centuries CE. Along with the town of Hedeby which is located in present-day Denmark, Birka was the most important Viking trading center in Europe. Due to its prime location on Lake Mälaren, which provided sailing access to the Baltic Sea through the Södertälje Canal, Birka attained great wealth as a mercantile settlement and entrepôt with extensive trading ties to Western Europe, Scandinavia, the Slavic and Byzantine east, as well as the Arab World. Birka was also the location where the Frankish missionary St. Ansgar (801-865 CE) first introduced the Swedes to Christianity c. 829-831 CE. UNESCO recognized Birka's importance in early medieval European history, declaring its archaeological site a World Heritage Site in 1993 CE, together with the neighboring site of Hovgården on the island of Adelsö.
Geography & Early History
Birka is located on the Swedish island of Björkö, which sits about 35 km (22 miles) to the southwest of the Viking town Sigtuna and 30 km (19 miles) west of Stockholm. In the Viking Age (c. 790-1100 CE), Lake Mälaren functioned as a bay adjacent to the Baltic Sea, and Birka was thus perfectly positioned near the northern long-distance trade routes that ran between the British Isles, Western Europe, the Kievan Rus, the Byzantine Empire, and the Abbasid Caliphate.
Although Danish and Norwegian Vikings sailed westwards towards the British Isles, Iceland, and Western Europe from the 8th-11th centuries CE, Swedish Vikings sailed eastwards, trading and raiding their neighbors in what is present-day Finland and Estonia as well as the Slavic Wends who inhabited what is now present-day eastern Germany. By the 800s CE, Swedish Vikings had managed to navigate their ships through the rivers of what is now Russia and Ukraine, penetrating as far as the Byzantine Empire and Abbasid Caliphate via the Dnieper, Don, and Volga Rivers. They brought back furs, silks, iron artifacts, and other luxury goods to Birka, which they then sold to merchants from Hedeby and Western Europe. The wealth that traversed the Baltic Sea also helped encourage Birka's founding at some point between c. 750-800 CE. As one of the earliest Viking trading hubs and one which generated (and, in turn, spread) tremendous wealth, Birka can be viewed as a catalyst for social and economic development in Scandinavia and Eastern Europe, becoming part of a larger network of trading centers which sprung up across the region.
There had been an earlier trading center on the island of Helgö, which is located about 8 km (5 miles) to Birka's southeast, and it is probable that both Helgö and the area in and around Birka became inhabited sometime around c. 400 CE. The name “Birka” might mean "marketplace" or "place of commerce", although its location on the island of Björkö ("birch island") fosters the idea of a connection with the Old Norse word bjǫrk, meaning "birch tree". It is likely that the Swedish kings who ruled from the nearby island of Adelsö – this is where the royal residence of Hovgården was located – oversaw or took some part in Birka's founding and the organization of economic activities on the island of Björkö. Birka, located in proximity to the royal court, was protected by royal charters as the town greatly enriched royal and noble coffers.

Finland used to have the “speak softly and carry a big stick” approach to Russia, which meant that official rhetoric was cautious but at the same time Finland maintained high defence capability mainly directed at a potential threat from Russia.
The threat perception has been indeed very consistent and even in the “optimistic years” in the early 2000’s, the possibility of armed attack (by Russia) against Finland was never completely excluded in Finnish government’s foreign, security and defence policy reports.
Since Finland’s policy was to keep quiet about the threat analysis and not to make noise about the preparedness policy either, this has come as a surprise to many outside of Finland now that the country has been in the focus of unusual attention due to the NATO accession.
In 2007, Finland’s then-defence minister Jyri Häkämies said in a speech during a visit in D.C. that given Finland’s geographical location, the 3 main security challenges are Russia, Russia and Russia.
It was typical for the Finnish public discourse on Russia that the statement by Häkämies caused a scandal, not because there was disagreement on what he said, but because it wasn’t politically correct to say it out loud.
But below the surface, the threat perception has been quite well and alive. E.g. the Finnish Defence Forces (FDF) used to call the enemy “the yellow state”, but somehow the enemy always came from the east (or as the joke goes: if it comes from the west, it’s flanking).
Another anecdote: I always struggle to remember the names of ordinal directions in Finnish (southwest, northeast etc) because they have weird, unintuitive names. An FDF officer once told me “just call it the threat direction (southeast), then everyone knows what you mean”.
P.S. last year, Finland’s threat analysis increased to 5x Russia.
In a speech [on 22 August 2022], Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto outlined 5 reasons why Finland is joining NATO: 1. Russia 2. Russia 3. Russia 4. Russia 5. Russia

Happy Independence Day 🇫🇮!
In my legacy, we're not there yet. Not almost in 600 years, to be exact 😅 (I hope one day, we get there)
In 1310s, where we are in my legacy at the moment, Finland was part of Kingdom of Sweden and was called Österland (engl. Eastland, fin. Itämaa). The name Finland might have come from the Old English word finna, which was used to describe Scandinavian people at the time. Or that is one theory. The name might have come from Sweden too, from the words finlonti or finlandi. But the name Finland and Finn has been used as early as the 1200s. But it's quite certain, that it's not Finnish origin, because at that time, Finnish language didn't have the letter f. (To be exact, Finnish language didn't exist yet as a literary or standard language until 1500s. But anyway the letter was not in the spoken language either.)
Finland in Finnish is called Suomi. Origins of that name are also in the dark. Some say it has something to do with swamps, because the word "suo" means swamp in Finnish. Again, just a theory.
Back in the middle ages Suomi meant geographicly only southern or southwest part of Finland. All in all, Finland meant the area, where Finnish speaking people lived.
Anyway, sorry about the info dump 😅 (or theory dump)
Thank you for my old and new followers! I couldn't imagine that so many of you might be interested my little simblr! 🥹 I'm so grateful of all of you! 🫶🏻 And I hope you keep enjoying our little history trip!
Have a great day!
Pssst! Here's a sneak peek to the future, maybe you can guess who is in this picture 👀

yo it occurred to me to crowdsource this: I am planning to visit Scandinavia in the next year for a couple of weeks. I've never been there. where should I go and what should I see/do?
i'll have about a week and need to end it by travelling (by train probs through Denmark) to the southwest of the Netherlands so I don't know that I can see All The Countries. So if you have thoughts about which to prioritise among Norway, Finland, and Sweden pitch your opinions please! I have no idea how to plan this.
(reblogs to get more opinions appreciated)

Our non-marine heroine Karleeen McQueen
You know what, you already know lots of stuff about Ahti II, I’m now going to tell you about Karleeen the spidergirl, Ahti’s best friend and the protagonist of a story I’m writing! A quick information sheet:
(+ Art reference)
Karleeen (with three e’s)… well, who doesn’t know about Karleeen! Probably not by looks, but you could read all about her on the papers some years back. It’s been a while, you'd hardly recognise her if you saw her now! Especially among the other jolly beachgoers, joggers, shoppers and summertime tourists; Karleeen lives in Naantali after all, with her single father on the coast of southwest Finland. In the summer it's busy, in the winter it's very quiet, all year round it's a very appropriate place for Karleeen, she thinks.
Now in her mid-teens (the Sirpaverse “starting point” is 2021), Karleeen is a most open and jolly girl! She loves socialising and chats with just about anybody she has a chance to interact with for more than five minutes. She’s always planning outings and looking to spend time with her best friends, too! She enjoys being silly, making wordplay and coming up with puns with ridiculous set-ups. Karleeen is a sensitive soul, she feels all of her emotions very strongly and shows them strongly, too. She sometimes has trouble regulating her emotional reactions and has a tendency to spiral. It's very difficult for Karleeen to lie, her feelings will be very clear from her facial expressions and body language no matter how hard she may pretend to feel otherwise. Not that she'd even lie! It would make her feel too bad.
Karleeen has loved nothing more her whole life than making "thingamajigs" — you know, machines, things that move, little inventions! It's so fascinating to her, how pieces that are little more than scrap on their own weave together into intricate creations that are far more than the sum of their parts. When she was a young kid she'd make things out of twigs and rocks and rope, but in her teens she's now moved onto more sophisticated methods, legos and actual robot-building sets. She's also dipping her toes into coding, so far it seems fun and it offers an additional medium for making things (only digitally this time). Karleeen would love to study mechanical engineering when she's old enough to go to a university, but it'll be a while until then! Besides for robotics Karleeen enjoys hiking in the outdoors, climbing trees, basking, collecting fun and/or useless trinkets of various kinds and strawberry-themed items, playing platformers and action-adventure games and doodling.
Karleeen’s a smart girl, but she struggles a lot with languages. Or, well, don’t let me entirely misrepresent her: she does have the achievement of knowing some ASL signs. Still, Finnish is the only language she speaks fluently and it’s her own mother tongue! She can’t quite get anything else stuck to her brain, speaking Swedish or Surish or even simple English feels like a chore. Like stated above Karleeen’s body language is very clear, one of the more common actions Karleeen does when she’s nervous, scared or sad is holding her hands and arms close to her chest.
Karleeen's favourite genre of music is classical, but she can't listen to it casually because it makes her very emotional. She likes pop, rock and soundtracks when it comes to just playing music in the car or with friends. Her favourite animals are elephants, and her favourite fish is the electric eel. Her favourite meal is minute beef steak with seasoned butter and chanterelles, but her actual favorite singular food item in general and favourite snack is wild strawberries. Her favourite drink is tap water. Her favourite flower is fireweed.
(Nowhere else to really mention this but Karleeen is also asexual and biromantic, it took a long while for her to figure out because her relationship with having human connections is rather complicated and unusual but she’s comfortable in that identity and doesn’t really overthink it, she has a lot of love in her heart for so many things so it’s only natural she would have a lot of love for many people too, she thinks)
#i want to point out that karleeen knows a little bit asl for a specific reason and not just because thats a sign language#apparently some people are under the impression that every deaf or hoh person in the world knows asl only?????#it is a specific feature that is unusual in her situation of being a finnish girl who does not interact with deaf people on a regular basis#and it is very intentional!#anyway. i love this girl and may you love this girl also when i actually finish my wips lol#karleeen is one of those few characters who came to me fully ready in a dream — even with a name!#karleen is also like an actual name which is crazy to me because i had no clue. im also coincidentally more used to the misspelled version#now having called karleeen that for years lmaoooo but thats how she was called in the dream UU#baby girl wonderful girl she has never done anything wrong in her life trust :]#karleeen#art#my art#sirpaverse#not fish

Finland is seeing college-educated people out of work in sectors where joblessness hasn't been typical, reports Kauppalehti.
The business daily said academic unemployment is nearing a ten-year high, with some 47,000 university graduates now job searching.
The economic slowdown is particularly hitting the technology and construction sectors. At the end of last year, ten percent of architect union members were drawing unemployment benefits.
KL also noted that even the IT services sector is sluggish, which is highly unusual.
Last week news emerged that PhD holders were struggling to find employment. There are currently 1,400 unemployed PhDs in Finland, two-thirds of whom are classed as long-term unemployed.
Snooping private records
Individuals' information in Finland is relatively easy to come by legally — the country is renowned for its tax data transparency, after all.
Hufvudtsdabladet, however, reports on curious dental hygienists who accessed patient records without a legitimate reason.
A Helsinki City dental hygienist accessed the records of over 2,000 individuals without authorisation. Another four dental care staff looked up the information of some 1,000 people.
All those involved in the unauthorised access have been dismissed, according to the paper.
Warming winters
This week has seen reports of föhn winds warming conditions in Finland to such an extent that snow cover will melt completely in large parts of the southwest and west of the country.
Maaseudun Tulevaisuus says temperatures will reach seven degrees Celsius in the south on Thursday while remaining well above freezing elsewhere in the country.
Finnish winters are seeing variable conditions. Last year, temperatures in Finland were on average 3.4 degrees warmer than in the pre-industrial era, with 2024 being the fourth warmest year on record.
#nunyas news#updates from up north#some of those job numbers will shift back#when they kill the ai stuff I'd wager
