"Why Would You Bother With Me?" - An Analysis of Kitsunami, 09/07/2024

tw: major discussions of abuse, the cycle of abuse, re-traumatizing situations, toxic and abusive relationships (non-romantic)

so like when I first read this panel my reaction was just to joke with Cori that this is a "get out of my school" moment (iykyk) but I've been thinking about it a lot recently because I... couldn't remember any specific beef Kit had with Tails?

Last we saw of them interacting one-on-one, Tails was talking Kit down from fighting, and Kit's beef with the squad later was more with Sonic than him. Tails didn't take down Surge in #56 or even affect the fight in any way, and Sonic was the one who told Kit that Surge was dead beforehand. At least that I could remember, so I went back to those comics. Indeed, in #56 he shows no animosity towards Tails specifically, nor when he talks to Surge in #55.

Then I went back to #54.

See, he does seem to blame Sonic entirely for the Surge death fakeout, and he thinks that Sonic is literally trying to kill her when he walks in. But he does have one (1) reaction to Tails, right at the end of the interaction.

In the previous issue, after Sonic and Tails saved his life, Kit immediately switched on his subservient personality and was desperate for any kind of validation from the hedgehog. We only see it for a few panels before he is told about Surge and sinks into a depressive state, but it's made very obvious.

And when he leaves to help?

Kit's conditioning under Starline means that he is excessively codependent on Surge– and if Surge isn't around, on anyone who is nice to him. The hypnotic repetition shown to us was "You live to support Surge. You'll do anything for her." Kit's sole purpose in life is to be a Support party member.

Kit's conditioning was to be the new Tails.

Starline wanted Surge and Kit to replace Sonic and Tails– that much was obvious from the get-go. But what was also obvious was his fundamental misunderstanding of Sonic and Tails's dynamic and how that negatively impacts Surge and Kit's relationship.

Starline completely misses the strong sibling bond that Sonic and Tails have. To him, Tails is just there to support Sonic, to provide the brains and tech that Sonic lacks, and so Kit needs to be there to support Surge in the same way. He sees it only as a business partnership, and not a mutual relationship built on trust, love, and shared experiences. Starline only saw other people as tools, so obviously he projected that onto Surge and Kit, hoping that they would immediately take up the closeness that Sonic and Tails did because, well, they served the same purpose to each other, right?

Except Surge and Kit don't have that relationship. These two children were forced into the same proximity and made to work together. They're coworkers at best, being told to act like a family.

Obviously their dynamic is super toxic, with Surge clearly holding a lot of power over Kit, but it's also clear that this isn't because Surge wants to beat on the kid. She was made to be Sonic, and so she has his arrogance (and possibly Shadow's, considering IS1 showed his image when Starline was talking about stealing abilities), but, as Boom!Sonic says, "Without any of the awesomeness to back it up." Okay, wrong, she's plenty awesome, the correct phrase is "Without the experience" and, most importantly, "without the altruism that makes Sonic Sonic." Surge wasn't programmed to like the people she saves, because that would conflict with Starline's goal to take over the world. So she's only made to be competitive and to want to best Sonic, anyone inbetween them be damned. This clashes with Kit's programming to not only be liked, but to be liked by Surge. Surge was also programmed to believe fully in herself in order to enhance the arrogant trait, and Kit was made to give her the help that she doesn't want.

To Surge, Kit represents everything holding her back. And she's not built to view him as a person, because Starline doesn't view him or her as people. Obviously this doesn't absolve her of her treatment of him, and later issues showing her getting more and more aware as she becomes more social is definitely going to impact the way she views him– or, if it doesn't make her reconsider Kit's personhood, it'll serve to make her more antagonistic for the viewer.

But the point is, Sonic trusts Tails because he knows and respects him as a person. It isn't just because Tails can help him, but because he knows Tails will. Surge, at this point in the comic, not only doesn't view Kit as a friend, she doesn't even care what he thinks or feels.

And despite the brainwashing, I don't think Kit is oblivious to this. He knows how bad their situation is, but he is so conditioned to accept it that he can't escape it whatsoever. In both fights with Tails, Tails talks him down easily because Kit doesn't want to hurt anyone. Kit only reacts violently when Surge is brought up, because he's meant to do anything she wants.

Like he said to Belle, he was made for Surge. And what he says directly after– "Sonic can use me, too." Kit doesn't even view himself as a person, only a tool– that's how far Starline's brainwashing went. It's clearly even affecting Surge, who realized in the latest issue, #72, how fast she and Kit fell into their abusive patterns again once Clutch took over– they were conditioned to be tools. Clutch claimed to want to help them, but really he was just using them for his own ends, just like Starline. So they went back to the familiar.

And speaking of familiar– pain is familiar to Kit, specifically pain in service to others. In his breakdown in #50, he says that Starline made him happy he'd been hurt. And in Imposter Syndrome #3 and #4, we see that him and Surge hate Starline and want to usurp him... but also are still trapped in the patterns he implanted in them. Surge still wants to kill Sonic and outperform everyone else. Kit still can't do anything but what she wants, to the point he becomes near catatonic when he believes she's dead.

Another pattern Kit is still trapped in is the idea that he has to be okay with his own suffering.

The only sense of home or family Surge and Kit have is in each other, but they fundamentally can't work together, at least as they are currently. Kit is expected to take Surge's anger, and Surge isn't expected to treat him like his own person.

And this, I think, is Kit's problem with Tails.

He was made to be Tails, and he knows this, but he can never have what Tails has. He can never live up to Tails and do what Tails can do, despite that being his entire life's purpose.

He doesn't hate Tails because he was programmed to– as he says to Surge, he only wants to destroy Sonic because she wants to. When he first encounters Tails, he refers to him as his target- a simple, unemotional term. He doesn't have the deep ingrained hatred for him that Surge does for Sonic.

Instead, he hates Tails because of what he sees in him. He sees Sonic and Tails interact, he sees how much Sonic trusts and relies on Tails, and he sees how he also loves and respects him. He sees how Tails has his own motivations and opinions, and he's experienced Tails's genuine compassion that was in part fostered by the hedgehog that raised him. In turn, Tails is loyal to Sonic, but not because he has to be– because he, in turn, loves Sonic and wants to be with him.

Kit only wants to be with Surge because he was forced to. Starline wanted to use Surge and Kit to stop Sonic and Eggman's cycle, but he made a whole new one instead. Kit is trapped in a cycle of pain, knows he's trapped in it, and is helpless to escape it.

Tails isn't, and Kit sees that in Tails. Subconsciously, he sees Tails and only sees how he fails to live up to his life's mission, and how he'll never have what Tails has.

After all, why would anyone bother with him? They already have Tails.

Is he a target? I like it here now.

The opinions of others concerning any and everything you do. You are meant to shine and show up as your most authentic self pile l. You do not need anyone's permission, advice, or even guidance on knowing who you are or what you should do with your life especially if these people are doing the exact opposite of what they try to preach to you. For some of you, I am getting that there is a family member or even just family in general who likes to dictate everything that you do and who you are. I have a story for you once upon a time a little mystic heathen had parents and family who would dictate and tell little heathen what to do up until it got time to actually put their money where their mouth was and would back out while telling little heathen still what to do. Little heathen wanted to major in English while her parents medicine or computer science. It wasn't until little heathen saw that no one was paying the bills but herself that the only opinion that mattered with what she majored in, where to move, what career, and who I should be friends with was the opinion of her own. She broke free and stopped giving a dam because once you give someone the power to mold and control you it never stops. Unless the opinion from others saw red flags that I did not see everyone's opinion or suggestions could fuck off. Again this is all a suggestion and my opinion as you're an adult and can make your decisions for yourself but if you have been looking for a sign as to what you should do, this is it. Be free and release yourself from the holds of others that hold you at a standstill or make you unhappy.

Validation from romantic partnerships. I get the strong feeling from this pile that you love to watch and read future spouse pick-a-card readings. No matter the topic of love when it comes to tarot you are there waiting to see what it has in store for you. It is also similar to how you are in a relationship. You see the validation from your partners that you are good enough. Some of you might even have a small bit of pick-me energy. Pile lll you may have also been slightly drawn to pile ll as both your piles kind of go hand in hand. Pile ll is all about validation from being in a romantic relationship while yours is simply you acting as if being single is the worst thing in the world. As mentioned in Pile ll you probably watch and read a lot of love and Future Spouse pick-a-card readings because you have a hard time being by yourself. If not pick a card readings you read a lot of romance novels. Your favorite authors are probably Emily Henry, Ana Huang, Ali Hazelwood, Lauren Asher, Elsie Silver, etc. You watch as others around you fall in and out of love and you want that for yourself. If romance was oxygen you would die the moment you're not with someone within .5 seconds and I need you to release the need for romance just for a split second. Pile lV You are my only pile where I have to tell you to give a f*ck about something. You've been through heartache, after heartache, and loss to the point you have closed off your heart to the world because of how many times you have been hurt. This is leading you down a path where sometimes you can't focus or make the best decision because you have closed off your heart to the world or even love in general that anything where you need to involve feelings, showing a small bit of compassion, or even empathy goes out the window. Sometimes even logic goes out the window because you are so strung on not getting yourself tangled up in anything where it could lead to heartache or betrayal. For most of you I am getting this is a relationship or several might I add. While others of you probably had a shining light. You were a lighthouse pouring your beautiful light, energy, and guidance out onto the world for others to take advantage of you and make you cold, aggressive, or deemed in the eyes of a few, an asshole. I need to remind you that it is okay to open your heart to others or even love again Pile lV. I get it, it's scary thinking about the chances of being hurt again but I have to remind you that, this is part of life. You get knocked down and you get back up again but don't harden yourself off to the world. Not when the world needs so much kindness and love right now. There is already so much hate and lack of compassion in this world, open yourself up again even if it is for a little bit or for certain situations. The things that happened to you weren't meant to harden you up but to teach you lessons about boundaries and having self-respect and love for yourself. Instead, you hardened up instead of doing the work that is necessary to establish standards and boundaries for yourself. Do the work. Open yourself up again. The world needs your kind and gentle heart the way it was always intended.

Jason Grace, so much potential...

Actually this goes for the entire lost trio. The AMOUNT of TRAUMA these three had and the potential for character development they had too is UNREAL, yet nothing was done. Let us begin my personal beliefs

Leo:

-Delve into his trauma of his remaining family deciding he was the devil at age EIGHT and refusing to take him in-abandonment issues

-Have his constant feelings of invalid-ness and being the unneeded member of the seven be corrected by giving him CLOSE FRIENDS HE PIPER AND JASON NEED TO BE CLOSER AT THE VERY LEAST and conversations when he realizes he is wanted and needed

-Don't have Calypso storyline in there-he didn't need a girlfriend to solve his problems, if you have it, have it as good friends-another member of his support group

-Make him gay and have valgrace or slowburn/implied valgrace(the two of them pining then like kinda tragic as Leo dies)

Piper:

-Have her lesbian storyline occur in HoO where she's a main character-it's an important storyline for her character that deserves a spotlight and time that ToA couldn't give it

-No Jiper! This relationship was toxic and founded on fake memories-if you're going to do it, do it as a part of her LGBTQIA+ journey and Jason's as well

-Don't have her demonize femininity! She can wear dresses! She can wear makeup! She can present more feminine and still be the same character and her hatred of any and all things feminine is not good representation! Make her a feminist, please! Or at least make her less against femininity as a whole.

-No kaleidoscope eyes! Give her brown eyes and also have her rediscovering her culture storyline as a part of HoO too!

Jason:

-Make him a better fighter than Percy. He has been at Camp Jupiter since the age of three and spent a year with wolves before then. He has spent his entire life in a military setting training, he should be a better swordfighter than Percy 'I show up to summer camp at age 12 to 16 and only really use my sword then' Jackson.

-Give him more powers. Or Percy less. Children of the big three should be equal in potential power, not Percy being OP and the others having lightning or shadows powers some of the time. Percy needs less power and Jason, Thalia, Hazel, and Nico need more. Jason should have more power than Percy as he has had longer to train it.

-Give him a personality. His storyline in HoO should be a journey of self-discovery. He has always been another member of an army, with constant pressure on him to be the best at everything and a strong confident leader who doesn't make mistakes as a son of Jupiter. His entire life has been dictated by those around him. For the first time, he is free of that and he needs to be discovering things like how he likes to dress, his style, his sexuality, his likes and dislikes, and his personality. In my opinion he should be kinda shy with a feral edge, side effect of the wolves, who is always trying to people please. When he stops doing this, he becomes significantly happier and a greater use to the team. Plus valgrace;D.

-Also, make him despise Percy at the beginning. He worked his entire life to be an afterthought that nobody looked for when he went missing for months, while Percy was looked for by everyone after only a few days. Percy achieved everything he wanted in a matter of weeks in New Rome and he was happy and had friends and a life. Percy has everything Jason doesn't. They need to have a moment where they are locked together and Percy goes "why do you hate me" and Jason breaks down because "You have everything I want and you don't even have to try!". This would create a better relationship for them and be the turning point for Jason as Percy hears what he has to say and validates him. Also Jason personality.

-Don't kill him off and continue his self-discovery journey in ToA.

-Make him and Thalia have a closer relationship that in the months between TLH and TSoN, it is implied that they spend time together. He should feel safe with her and they needed more interactions as they are SIBLINGs, god damit.

-Make him and Reyna just friends-she wanted to look for him but couldn't 'cause Octavian(the bitch) and someone needed to be Praetor in his absence.

-Also give him history with Octavian-ex-friends or something give me drama.

As time flies, the afternoon rolls around. 

When leaving the cafe, Seonghwa and Bella said “Goodbye” to the dogs and the workers. In the streets of Gangnam, there are a variety of shops, restaurants, Korean history, and many more. The couple walks around in peace as they converse as the spring breeze dances in the air. 

“What made you decide to become an idol?” Seonghwa is curious about Bella’s life because he expects it will be the best way to get to know her better. He changed out of the barista uniform into much more casual clothes. Bella responded, “My appa and omma grew up in the nineties and were big fans of K-pop. At five years old, my parents showed me classic K-pop songs, inspiring me to become an idol. I also loved singing and dancing, but mainly dancing. My vocals are not that strong.” She lets out a small laugh—a sheepish laugh. 

Seonghwa listens to her and has deep brown eyes on her as she speaks. After she said her weak skill as an idol was singing, it broke his heart. He also understands where Bella is coming from because he never wanted to become a vocalist before getting recruited to ATEEZ. 

“I was supposed to be a rapper. But I grew to love singing.” Seonghwa mentioned. “I’m sure you’ll find your singing voice.” He delivers an encouraging remark. Bella witnessed his handsome gleaming with the sun and his words were like magic. It can make anyone appreciate Seonghwa like no other. He is so kind. 

Bella contemplates whether it’s for the show or he meant it. 

She did a short nod. “Thank you, sunbaenim.”

The older chuckles merrily. “You’re welcome. Call me Seonghwa or Seonghwa oppa if you’re okay with any.” He tells Bella. 

“Understood.” She knows it’ll take a while to get used to saying his name in person. 

Seonghwa adds, “That’s also impressive how you traveled here at such a young age. Keep up the good work. Hwaiting!” He raises two fists and has Bella giggling. He is supportive too. 

Bella doesn’t know how much appreciation she’ll give him—probably until her heart combusts. 

Subsequently, the newlyweds found an arcade inside a mall to play games and win prizes. With Seonghwa, it’s either a good or bad trait that he is competitive. Not just him but everyone in his group will make a simple game like Rock, Paper, Scissors into a game from hell. Not to mention, the PD crew has given the couple a new task. 

For a first date, the arcade is perfect to be kids at heart and have a blast with games. However, this mission is to win a special plushie by earning one hundred tickets. Good luck, players.

The inside looks like any other arcade: neon lights, a cheerful atmosphere, and people of all ages playing games.

Seonghwa taps Bella’s left shoulder. Her head cranes up to meet his gaze. “A reminder or a warning. I’m a competitive player.” He needed to let her know. Bella smiles widely, “I am too. So, you got a helping hand.” She loves video gaming, especially with her members and older brother. That’s one thing the couple have in common. 

Before doing so, Seonghwa and Bella checked out their plush at the prize area. It’s Grogu from Star Wars. Once they saw the adorable green character, their eyes glimmered. “So cute!” They spoke in unison. 

Seonghwa and Bella turned their heads and looked at each other. “Do you like Star Wars?” The male idol asked his wife. She nodded happily. “I love Star Wars! Grogu is my favorite!” Bella has a mini collection of the alien baby. 

“Anakin Skywalker is my favorite.” Seonghwa could never be happier. Another thing they have in common. “Do you build Lego sets?” He asked Bella. She shook her head. “No, but I would love to do it as a hobby.” She knows Seonghwa is passionate about building Lego sets because she has watched his livestreams. They are enjoyable and therapeutic. 

Like a gentleman, Seonghwa allowed Bella to choose the first game. She decided to play basketball. After swiping the game card, Bella is up and ready. She rolls up the sleeves of her cardigan. 

“You can do it!” Her husband cheers so loudly with no care. Bella’s ears picked up Seonghwa’s lovely voice and her smile grew. 

She kept shooting hoops and times she missed but got a brilliant score. Meanwhile, Seonghwa was astounded while motivating Bella. 

“Wah, I’m tired.” She started to sweat in her cute outfit. Hopefully, Seonghwa doesn’t notice it. He tells her, “You were amazing! Jongho has competition.” Seonghwa brings up the powerful Main Vocalist maknae. Bella quickly shakes her head. “Nope. I’ll pass.” She makes an X with her index fingers. It makes Seonghwa laugh at how straightforward she is. 

After thirty minutes of playing games, they were halfway to getting one hundred tickets. Most of the time it’s Seonghwa being Bella's biggest supporter.

Q. Have you noticed your husband was cheering you on? 

The producer asked her, and she beams with an enthusiastic nod. “I did hear him from the background, and it was nice of him. I was having fun and was embarrassed that I failed to score, but Seonghwa was reassuring and I am thankful for that.” Bella couldn’t contain her smile as she talked about her on-screen husband. She must be the luckiest woman on the planet.

Their last game was a difficult one. It’s the claw machine, but they are also assigned to get a roll of tickets. Inside the transparent glass is their prize with a chrome silver bow. “I’ll do this one.” Seonghwa declared because he felt determined. Plus, he wants to impress his wife. Bella has a handful of tickets, and she gives some moral support. “Good luck, Seonghwa oppa!” She cheers for the man. 

Intentional or not, he is screaming internally. She sounded so cute saying his name!

Seonghwa takes a deep breath before starting the claw machine. “Let’s go!” He tries hyping himself up. Bella laughs softly because out of all the games, the claw machine will be his worst enemy. 

She is correct. 

Ten minutes later, Seonghwa is frustrated that he nearly cursed on live television. Luckily, Bella tried calming him down, but his angry face looked adorable. Nevertheless, seeing the object slide off of the claw was aggravating. 

“Maybe I should help.” The dancer suggested. 

Seonghwa turns his head to her and says, “Yes, please!” He begged like it was the last resort. Bella grins while patting his back. She gives him their tickets and switches spots. “Okay, let’s see how I’ll do.” She honestly has some confidence, but not fully. 

After swiping the game card, Bella presses the “Start” button. Seonghwa immediately becomes her navigator, rambling on like, “Left, left.” “Turn to the right.” “Move a little further.” “Stop, stop.” “Time is running out grab it!”

Bella listened to his demand and successfully got the roll of tickets. Seonghwa's hunched position perks up and he yells his lungs out with his arms in the air. Bella squeals and claps her hands. 

They won the Grogu plushie and walked out of the arcade feeling satisfied. 

Seonghwa’s mouth gaped. “Wow. It’s already dark.” He didn’t expect the hours to go by so quickly. The evening is here and the sun sets with the blush of a rose petal. Bella’s brown orbs scan the pretty city lights. The plushie is snugged in her arms because Seonghwa let her have it. He considered the cute alien as her first date gift from him.

In silence, the wife nods to indicate she trusts her husband. 

Seonghwa and Bella entered the self-photo studio with cute props on the clothing racks and baskets. Instantly, a headband of bear ears caught Bella’s attention. “Ooh! Now, for the last photo, they weren’t sure what to do.

Goodbye for Now

Almost 2 months ago I posted a list of possible hurdles that Oliver had warned us about (link):

It's possibly because of something from Tommy's past (we might get a Tommy Begins of some sort).

It possibly would happen through episodes 8x05 and 8x06.

Buck will go to Bobby, Maddie, and Eddie for support during that period.

Buck might find out about Tommy's past (being a racist and mysoginist a-hole) and couldn't accept it, or

Tommy might meet Carla. Carla might tell Buck that Tommy had lied to Abby and used her as a beard in the past. Abby was hurt badly because of it, and Buck couldn't accept it.

Buck might break up with Tommy.

Buck might try to date another man or a woman (if they want to emphasize that Buck is bisexual, not gay).

When I made the above list, I half-jokingly wrote down the worst posssibilities I could think of. The purpose of my post back then is to prepare other Tevan shippers who at the time had doubt about the relationship. I told them that grown-up relationships had all sorts of challenges, including break-ups. I also told them to watch Disney Princess movies if they couldn't handle it.

Who knew that almost 2 months later I have to swallow my own pills?

As contradictive as it sounds, I'm not happy that my predictions come true, including the possibility of Buck dating men & women again (prediction #7) which could happen based on interview with Oliver Stark (link)

Will Buck and Tommy make up?

Negative sign:

There are two interviews with Lou which I still refused to read, because the writers used to be Buddie baiters. But according to fans who have read it, the break up seems final.

Positive signs:

A)) 9-1-1 official Instagram account wouldn't follow Lou in the first place if he wouldn't stay for long term. Last time I check, 9-1-1 account still following Lou.

B)) Things that I wrote in my previous post still stand (link).

Tim and Oliver has said they wanted Buck to get out of the relationship hamster wheel and have a steady meaningful one instead.

Unlike Abby, whom they broke up with Buck because Tim had difficulties in writing her interaction with other 118 family members, Tommy has known most of the 118 family even before Buck does. There is no difficulty in making scripts where Tommy interacts with other 118 members without Buck's presence.

And the most important reason is: THE RATING IS HIGH when Tevan relationship is going strong.

My conclusion: There are 2 options:

The break-up is only temporary, to spice things up. Unfortunately, the timing is really bad because it is aired after the fuck-up US election result 🤦.

Tommy is moving to the new 9-1-1 spin-off, which probably located in Hawaii (link). If this happens, the break-up might be permanent, but it will be good for Lou's career.

What's next?

Although I think Tommy will come back in the 9-1-1 universe, I'm still upset. The 2nd term of Trump and Tevan's break-up happened within the same week! WTF??? I refuse to deal with both at the same time.

This is a list of what I will and will not do, and what I've done:

I will not harrass Tim Minear, Oliver Stark, or even the show on social media. I will not post my disappointment on unrelated social media contents. We have experienced how annoying it was when toxic Buddie fans did it. I refuse to do the same. I suggest other Tevan fans too. We are better than that.

I have unfollowed all 9-1-1 related social media accounts, both official and not. Yes, it is included 911bts and 911cast Tumblr accounts. I think this is a healthy way to voice my disappointment and to maintain my mental health.

I will stop watching the show until Tommy is (or, is officially announced to be) back on screen. The only exception will be when they show Bathena's new house for the first time, because I've been waiting to see it. Other than that, just no. Not even when Eddie reunites with Chris, if that happens before Tommy is back on screen. This step might even save me a few bucks, actually 😅.

I will stop engaging with 9-1-1 related contents on the internet. I will not read any articles about the show. I will not comment, post, reblog or do anything with contents about 9-1-1 on the internet.

I will stop reading 9-1-1 fics because I never comfortable following ships which are against canon. That's why I don't ship Buddie. And now that Tevan broke-up, I cannot engage with AUs where they are still together.

If you think Tevan will make up, why do you quit the show? Because:

I consume entertainment contents to be entertained, not to be depressed. I used to skip sad chapters on novels, and only read them when I'm ready. Buck without Tommy is a sad chapter for me, so I skip it.

This is my way to voice my disappointment in a healthy way. Things that matter the most for the show are rating/viewership and rating/viewership-related metrics. My actions may not have significant impacts to the show, but I am satisfied, nonetheless. Especially, after Oliver's comment that he has actively asked Tim Minear to 'Let Buck F–k' men and women (link). His ask is not only a regression to slutty Buck 1.0 (which we thought he has grown out of), but also strengthening the stereotype that bisexual people are easy to fuck around. A stereotype that a lot of bisexual people want to shred.

Tim Minear and Oliver Stark have the right to make the story as they see fit. This show is not customed to my preference. I'm very much aware of that. This is a "love it or leave it" product. So, I choose to leave it. For now.

I’ve seen too many posts on Rhaenyra ‘continuing the cycle of Viserys’ weakness’ or ‘being a bad mother’ without considering the bad writing of House of the Dragon and I am fed up with it. Rhaenyra’s motherhood being stripped from her was nothing more than ignorant and (at times) malicious writing, it is not a true aspect of her character.

First, considering the “parallel” between Viserys and Rhaenyra - where neither truly support their heir’s position - it should be pretty apparent that this wasn’t intentional. The writers clearly had NO understanding of how they wrote Viserys, which in turn meant they didn’t understand how they wrote Rhaenyra. Even back in Season 1, consider the fact that it was the fandom that noticed how weak Viserys was in supporting Rhaenyra, there was little to no framing of this at all from the show itself. He’s portrayed as a man who wished for his family to get along, but failed because they refused to do so - not because of his lack of decision making.

In Episode 8, he’s desperately trying to bring his family together one last time, and he is portrayed as someone who is not at fault; regardless of the fact that he was clearly much too late to change anything, this is a heroic act. Viserys is not at fault, it was Alicent who misheard him, the council who usurped Rhaenyra. Viserys was a ‘good’ man, and the weak and politically terrible attempts he made to secure her succession are instead framed as strong and wise decisions.

Even back in the earlier episodes, this is obvious. When he sends Rhaenyra out on her tour for a husband, this is made out as Viserys helping her. Rhaenyra is terrified of marriage and the childbed, but his ignorance of such isn’t considered at all by the show. And when he sends off Otto, this is shown as an amazing decision that showed his clear protectiveness of Rhaenyra - even though he then took away her choice, sold her off to a man who would have a hard time giving her children, and took away one of the only family members she felt she could rely on. Truly incredible.

And even further back, when Viserys is stubbornly acting as if nothing is wrong during the carriage ride to the hunt, this is framed as Rhaenyra being difficult, not Viserys’ lack of consideration for her feelings. The show had very little idea of who they made Viserys out to be.

In Episode 10, this idea becomes more forceful through Rhaenyra’s sovereignty.

“Rhaenyra is very much her father’s daughter…the way she approaches her duties as sovereign is much more in line with Viserys” - Ryan Condal, Inside the Episode

Viserys is not viewed as weak. He’s a “peaceful” and “good” ruler, one who should be emulated. Season 2 not only confirms this, but also encourages it.

“Do you never think of your father? His…forbearance, his…judiciousness, his…his dignity.” - Otto Hightower, S02E03

“You sound like my father.” - Rhaenyra to Daemon, S02E08

This means that the idea that Rhaenyra’s parenting is a result of Viserys’ is nonexistent. How can her parenting be weak when her father’s wasn’t either? This is a parallel that comes from the fandom, it has no real meaning in the story. That’s not to say the writers weren’t putting Rhaenyra in a situation where her parenting could be questioned - because they were - but this is not a true parallel, it does not exist to affect or even foreshadow the plot.

Rhaenyra does not continue this cycle of weakness. In fact, if the writers or the fandom understood the relationship between Viserys & Alicent’s family, and Rhaenyra & Daemon’s family, they would have understood that Rhaenyra would break any cycle created.

This brings me to the next point - Rhaenyra is not a bad mother. She is being stripped of her motherhood, yes, but she is not a bad one.

Regardless of book or show, it is clear that Rhaenyra raised a good family. In the book Jace, Luke, and Joffrey are noble, caring, and perfect as any man in Westeros could be. Aegon as well, kept constantly by Rhaenyra’s side, is noted to be a good person, even if traumatized. And with no other consistent parenting figure, GRRM clearly credits this to Rhaenyra. The fact that every one of the children she raised turned out so well was not unintentional writing.

When the Prince of Dragonstone took his dragon back into the cold autumn sky, he did so with the knowledge that he had won three powerful lords and all their bannermen for his mother. Though his fifteenth nameday was still half a year away, Prince Jacaerys had proved himself a man, and a worthy heir to the Iron Throne.

His brother Lucerys agreed. “Our uncle calls us Strongs, but when the lords see us on dragonback they will know that for a lie. Only Targaryens ride dragons.” Mushroom tells us the Sea Snake grumbled at this, insisting the three boys were Velaryon, yet he smiled as he said this…“My lord, I am not free to marry,” he replied. “I am betrothed to my cousin Rhaena.”

Prince Joffrey, three-and-ten, donned squire’s armor and begged the queen to let him ride to the Dragonpit and mount Tyraxes. “I want to fight for you, Mother, as my brothers did. Let me prove that I am as brave as they were.”

“There will be no progress.” [Aegon] declared… “I mean to give the smallfolk peace and love and justice.”

And when it comes to protecting her children - well, there is no doubt that she supported their ascension.

Ser Vaemond Velaryon, protested that the inheritance by rights should pass to him…on the grounds that Rhaenyra’s sons were bastards sired by Harwin Strong. The princess was not slow in answering this charge. She dispatched Prince Daemon to seize Ser Vaemond, had his head removed, and fed his carcass to her dragon, Syrax.

“Bastard blood, shed at war,” Alicent replied… The Dowager Queen’s words only fanned the flames of Rhaenyra’s wroth. “I will hear no more lies,” she warned. “Speak again of bastardy, and I will have your tongue out.”

In the show, while these events are somewhat removed/haven’t happened yet, they are somewhat present in S1. Rhaenyra drags herself through the Red Keep minutes after childbirth to ensure Joffrey is safe by her side. She threatens Aemond to keep her son safe, and takes a dagger to the arm to keep Alicent from harming him. When it came to Luke’s succession being threatened, she was willing to beg her father to protect her and her children. She gives a small nod to Daemon, asking him to take Vaemond’s head. She clearly does her best to protect her children in Season 1.

Rhaenyra, also unlike Viserys, ensures her children all love each other. While she had a terrible relationship with her own half-siblings in part because Viserys never cared to ensure Alicent couldn’t influence them against Rhaenyra, the half-sibling children of Rhaenyra clearly do not feel the same animosity.

The Prince of Dragonstone also had a care for the safety of his half-brothers, Aegon and Viserys, aged nine and seven. Their father, Prince Daemon, had made many friends in the Free City of Pentos during his visits there, so Jacaerys reached across the narrow sea to the prince of that city, who agreed to foster the two boys until Rhaenyra had secured the Iron Throne.

Viserys’ return did much to lessen the king’s loneliness as well. As a boy, Aegon had worshipped his three elder half-brothers.

Rhaenyra is not a continuation of Viserys. She is his opposite. She ensures her sons grow up kind and noble, unlike Viserys’ sons who grow callous and cruel to all. She protects her sons from threats of succession, unlike Viserys who sought to please both Rhaenyra and Alicent, putting her in danger. She ensures all her children grow up as one family with no wish to overthrow one another, whereas Rhaenyra’s own half siblings did usurp her. It is very clear in the book that Rhaenyra raised and protected her children in the way Viserys never truly did for her.

Now, in House of the Dragon, the writers changed this aspect of her in two ways in Season 2: by removing her children from her side, and by making Rhaenyra choose the throne over her children.

In the first one, this is easily seen when Rhaenyra willingly sends off all of her children to the Vale. Rather than have this orchestrated by Jacaerys, she sends them off herself, and says that she cannot be a mother to them. To add to this, Rhaenyra hardly has any time with the children, leaving the scenes between them rather cold. We also see the way that Jace, Joffrey, Aegon, and Viserys do not mix. They are not in the same scenes most of the time, or they do not interact with one another.

This was mostly just because Condal only cared to develop the Team Green kids over Team Black’s, but it was also set up in order to make the next change easier - and to make sure the audience wouldn’t question it.

The second change was deliberate, and intended to take away Rhaenyra’s motherhood. When they created the dragonseed situation, they specifically gave it to Rhaenyra to carry out in order to put her in a position between power and her children. As if somehow she could not come to a compromise.

She can have the throne or the children, not both.

This show has a serious problem with female autonomy and illegitimate children, so this was done for a reason. To portray bastards as some sort of “sin” that must be given up in order to gain something “righteous.” In the books they cause her 0 problems - the Greens usurped her because of misogyny, the bastardy was simply their cover up that no one else cared to believe, even on their own team.

Ser Criston Cole spoke up. Should the princess reign, he reminded them, Jacaerys Velaryon would rule after her. “Seven save this realm if we seat a bastard on the throne.” He spoke of Rhaenyra’s wanton ways and the infamy of her husband. “They will turn the Red Jeep into a brothel. No man’s daughter will be safe, nor any man’s wife. Even the boys…we know what Laenor was.”

This is changed in the show, where the children are the problem, not the misogyny. This much has been clear throughout both seasons, but it is actively encouraged in Season 2, where the writers’ bigotry and hatred for Team Black was let loose.

They do not like Rhaenyra, and they don’t seem to particularly care for how much this characteristic of hers was loved by the audience. They also don’t like Jace, Luke, or Joff much because they are rather bastardphobic (how that exists now I don’t know, but this show has revealed just how many people believe it). So the writers indulged in their fantasies by taking away one of Rhaenyra’s best characteristics, and by portraying the Velaryon boys as uncompromisable obstacles to the throne just because of their birth. Therefore giving themselves a way to portray Rhaenyra as a narcissistic and religious woman who cares more about power than other people.

This is not Rhaenyra. This is the writers using her face to force in their own political and social ideas - just as they’ve done for Jace and Rhaenys. Rhaenyra’s unintentional parallel to Viserys means nothing, and is just a disguise the fandom made up to let the writers get away with their misogynistic writing. Rhaenyra was written as loving, protective mother, and to consider her otherwise is to engage in the writers’ misogyny, nothing else.

Balin: Balin being a traditional dwarf, would want to meet your family as soon as you both decided to start seeing each other. He'd make an effort to show his intentions by inviting them to a nice dinner. I imagine he knows a little bit about your family, so every evening after work, he’d stay up to learn the language. 

Dwalin: Dwalin wouldn't meet your family until later in the relationship, specifically when you asked him to come over and help do a few chores. He’d put on his work shoes and be over in a matter of seconds. Realizing there was a language barrier, he’d ask you to translate what they needed help with. Initially, your family would be unsure, finding his tattoos and demeanor intimidating. They would say, “Why is he so quiet?” “Does he ever smile?” However, after seeing his devotion and how happy he made you, they’d slowly change their minds. He would regularly ask to come back and help, whether it was washing clothes, rebuilding a fence, or even helping put the baby to sleep. Comments about him would turn positive: “Look how strong he is,” “He is wonderful with kids,” “Does he have a brother? *wink wink*”

Óin: Oin would want to match outfits. He is such an old man! He would want to make sure you both looked presentable and would spend extra time on his braids and yours. It would honestly be so cute!!! 

Glóin: Gloin would be incredibly nervous to meet your parents. However, his nerves would get the best of him, and he might drink a little too much, rambling on about his adventures. You’d have to translate—perhaps even fib a little—to make sense of his stories. 

Gloin: “There was this dragon, and we had to kill it…” 

You: “He says he works in accounting…” 

Bifur: The first impression might not be great, with the ax in his head possibly scaring them. However, his skill in whittling, a.k.a. giving them gifts, and a potential family member knowing Khuzdul could turn things around.  The gif below is what your family will look like when they see the ax lol

Bofur: I know I always associate songs with Bofur, but it fits him so well, lol! Singing is how he won you over, so he wants to win the family over too. He would make sure to sing all the favorites and would ask for requests! I think by the end of the night the entire family would be singing! 

Bombur: Bombur would impress your family with his cooking. Once they learned he enjoyed cooking, they’d bond over shared recipes and favorite ingredient. He’d quickly become a favorite, often asked to help cook during holidays and special occasions.

Ori: Ori would be extremely nervous meeting your family, so much so that Dori and Nori might join to support him. They’d embarrass him, but it would lighten the mood. Your parents would find his family amusing and see Ori as a decent guy. By the end of the night, they’d give him a hug, and he’d be thrilled, talking about it for weeks.

Dori: The ideal boyfriend to introduce to your parents. Dependable, respectful, and family-oriented, he’d make a great impression. He’d also be impressed with your translating skills. Additionally, seeing that you were working overtime translating, he would go out of his way to help you. “Oh honey, do you need more food?" "Here I can show your grandmother to the bathroom." "Would you like extra wine, dear?”

Nori: You and Nori were new in your relationship and not ready for him to meet your family officially. However, they’d catch glimpses of him bringing you home after dates. They would think he was a "bad boy" and become suspicious. They would often ask, “What’s his job again?” because it changed so much. He’d win them over by bringing thoughtful “gifts” (definitely not stolen lol) after every date, and they'd start to appreciate his efforts.

Thorin: Thorin’s reputation would precede him, with your parents knowing about the adventure and his temporary gold/dragon sickness. They’d be skeptical, and the initial meeting would involve many questions. You’d have to translate everything, making Thorin increasingly nervous. A few of Thorin’s answers were: “No, I am not sick...yes, I go outside ... Madam, I can assure you, I shower." Despite the awkward start, they’d warm up to him, seeing his genuine intentions. He’d often host dinners and family events to show his commitment and might give you a promise ring to signify his dedication.

Kíli: Bless his heart for meaning well, but oh boy, is he a big himbo. Kili would think he was making a great first impression, but I feel like he would be making a fool of himself. First he would try to kiss your mother's hand, and it would be misinterpreted as flirting. Second, he would try impressing them with his skills, only to trip and fall. Finally, he would think your younger siblings were helping him learn the language, but they would end up teaching him dirty words. So when he gives a big speech and happens to use those words..well, let's just say you would need to do damage control. I think after a while it would become a family joke, and everyone would fondly remember his attempts to make a good first impression. I would like to imagine it’s an April and Andy situation lol 😂😂

Fíli: There must be something with the Durin boys..cause they are hot but dumb. Okay, so Fili would be super excited to meet your family; he would talk for days about how he was "preparing” and “had a surprise." Every time you ask him what that means, he will just give you a wink and say, “You’ll be so proud, babe." However, his attempts to impress might result in miscommunication. On the day of meeting your parents, he tries saying something in their native language and would slip up and pronounce something completely wrong. I imagine it’s kind of like papá and papas in Spanish—dad and potatoes. He would’ve revealed to you that he had asked Ballin and Nori for help on the language and just got horrible advice. Despite initial giggles and laughter at his mistakes, your family would appreciate his effort. 

Bilbo: Bilbo would meticulously plan a party to meet your family, aiming to overcome any awkwardness with a grand feast and festivities. He’d insist on handling everything himself, wanting to be the perfect host. Once they arrived, he’d go all out, showing them around, serving them the best food and pipe weed, and even arranging for fireworks. “What can I say? Us hobbits love a good party,” he would say, putting his arm around you and squeezing!

Gandalf: Your family would be so confused! It would be like the gif below when Bilbo first talked to Gandalf. Pure shock and suspicion. I also think Gandalf would speak in riddles and confuse everyone!

It had been four months since Jiang Fengmian sent Wei Wuxian to the Lan family as a show of good faith. Now, his adoptive father was dead, and Wei Wuxian allowed the gang leader’s youngest nephew to fuck him every day to assuage his boredom.

In all honesty, Wei Wuxian hadn’t given his relationship with Lan Zhan much thought, yet as he walked into the member’s area of the restaurant, which served as the preferred conference room of the four great families, he couldn’t help feeling a little guilty about what Jiang Cheng might think. Yet that guilt quickly morphed into excitement when he actually saw his adopted brother. Positioned at the head of the table, Jin Zixuan to his right and Nie Mingjue to his left, Jiang Cheng carried the manner of a man who’d led a crime family for years. It felt bizarre to acknowledge the drive by shooting that stole Jiang Fengmian’s life happened a mere week ago. The sight of him made Wei Wuxian’s heart swell. Though the second he sat down, he soon became aware of a familiar scent, thick in the air.

‘The Wens’ are invading our patch again,’ Jin Zixuan said, starting the meeting in earnest, ‘We need to do something about them!’

‘I already told you, our mole knows their next location. We can easily set a trap to take out Wen Chao. He’s always been weak to women, no one would be shocked if he turned up dead in the pleasure district.’ Lan Xichen said.

Both appeared completely oblivious to the growing stench around them. It was sweet. a little floral and terribly nostalgic. Wei Wuxian racked his brain, trying to recall where he’d smelt it before. The meeting continued around him, but he failed to pay any attention to the schemes being put forward due to his own growing arousal.  

‘Why does it have to be that club? Our girls are just as capable?’ Jiang Cheng wore an irritated expression.

‘I’m sorry, is nobody going to comment on that smell?’ Wei Wuxian asked unable to hide his frustration a second longer.

Lan Zhan frowned, ‘I assume an omega in heat is nearby.’

‘I know that! But why is it so strong in here?’ Wei Wuxian shot a pointed look at Jiang Cheng.

The other man’s face turned a shade pinker as he scowled, ‘Isn’t it obvious?’

‘Obviously not!’

Jiang Cheng covered his eyes with his hand, ‘You always ruin everything,’ he seethed before withdrawing his hand, ‘I wasn’t going to say anything until the end of the meeting, but apparently my brother is incapable of ignoring the obvious.’

He pointed to the door that led out to the car park, ‘Outside, a van is filled with some of our best omegas, all are in heat, all are skilled in delivering pleasure and have been chosen specifically to match your desires.              Consider it my gift to you all. A thank you, for your support in the wake of my father’s murder.’

‘That’s not necessary,’ Lan Zhan said.

Jiang Cheng glared at him, lifted his cup to his lips and downed the contents before he replied, ‘If you don’t want one, you can go home.’

Wei Wuxian failed to listen to the outcome of the Wen issue. Instead, he studied Jiang Cheng for the remainder of the meeting, as though he were a science experiment. A faint sheen of sweat began to form on Jiang Cheng’s skin causing him to glisten when the light hit him just right, his breathing became increasingly erratic the longer the other crime families argued. Perhaps Wei Wuxian’s favourite observation was the way Jiang Cheng shifted uncomfortably on his seat every now and then, seeking friction, seeking release. It was equal parts dangerous and obscene. Jiang Cheng’s slick had always gushed from him, staining countless amounts of furniture and bed sheets. That he was allowing himself to be so lewd in front of the other crime families made Wei Wuxian’s cock rock hard. He imagined pulling him onto the table and defiling him right then and there, audience be damned. But if their criminal empire discovered one of it’s most well-respected families was run by an omega, a drive by shooting wouldn’t be punishment enough. Wei Wuxian knew what the men around him were like. If Jiang Cheng continued to push through, he’d find himself in a brothel serving all manner of pond scum by the end of the night.

The only option available to Wei Wuxian was to shuffle further under the desk to conceal his body’s reaction and hope Jiang Cheng was smart enough to wrap up the meeting sooner rather than later.  He continued to talk and so Wei Wuxian downed the jug of Emperor’s Smile in front of him.

Once all eyes were on him, he wiped his mouth and asked, ‘So, when do we get the omegas?’

He felt Lan Zhan bristle beside him, but Wei Wuxian didn’t care. That was a problem that could be solved back in Gusu, with a well-timed blow job.

Jiang Cheng moved to the door without preamble, ‘So impatient, have them now why don’t you!’ 

He opened the door  and the members of the Jiang family that manned it suddenly sprang into action. They opened the van’s back doors. As promised, a handful of barely dressed omega’s, slick shining between their thighs, rushed in, seeking an appropriate alpha to fill them up. Jiang Cheng managed to vanish in the chaos.

‘Let’s go,’ Lan Zhan said.

Wei Wuxian nodded and followed him into the corridor, the smell of Jiang Cheng’s heat assaulted his nostrils once more, subconsciously he raised a hand to his face.

‘What’s wrong?’

‘Nothing, nothing!’ Wei Wuxian waved the hand that covered his nose in front of his eyes, in a pitiful attempt to look casual, ‘I need the toilet before we go. Wait in the car for me?’

‘I can wait here.’

‘No! What if one of those omega’s comes out and tries to get you! I’d be so jealous! The car is much better. Please?’ Wei Wuxian punctuated his sentence with an adorable beam.

‘Mhm.’

With that, Lan Zhan left the restaurant. Finally alone, Wei Wuxian headed for the place he was certain to find Jiang Cheng.

As a result of the restaurant being Jiang Fengmian’s favourite, he’d been granted his own private room. A room Jiang Cheng now had access to. Wei Wuxian headed there without a second thought. Jiang Cheng was in a very sorry state, crouched in the corner, one hand clamped over his mouth to stifle his moans as the fingers of the other hand pistoned within him at a punishing pace. His trousers and underwear tossed to one side, ruined by slick after he’d tortured himself for forty-five minutes in a room full of alphas. In the close confines, Jiang Cheng’s scent was too much to bear and Wei Wuxian flew across the room to him like a wild animal. One hand clasped around his throat whilst the other pulled his hand away from pleasuring himself. Without even giving Jiang Cheng chance to respond, he shoved three fingers inside his wet hole, bending them just so, he brushed against Jiang Cheng’s sweet spot again and again and again.

Your latest post has finally spurred me into asking you this. Based on his bio, his intros with Liu Kang, and everything else you brought up, what do you think about Tomas being the traitor instead of Bi-Han? Or, if NRS really wanted to go all out with the 3D era references in MK1, both Bi-Han and Tomas being traitors, and being the New Era Noob-Smoke? Or Sub-Smoke, rather, due to Bi-Han being Sub-Zero.

Tomas being the traitor for sure would create more surprising plot twist than what we got with not-so-subtly choice of Bi-Han, as Sub-Zero’s betrayal was hinted in his and Scorpion’s biographies way before the full story mode was revealed:

[...] Under his leadership, the Lin Kuei will come out of the shadows and fight for its place as one of Earthrealm’s great nations.

and

But Sub-Zero's unprecedented moves to cast off Lin Kuei's traditional duties have frozen Scorpion’s enthusiasm. He fears that he may one day have to battle his brother for control of the Lin Kuei's legacy.

A hint also supported by the earliest officially shared Liu Kang vs Sub Zero intro dialogues, especially the “Your actions cost lives, Bi-Han!” and “Earthrealm isn't yours to rule”.

So, in all fairness, the most surprising choice of the Lin Kuei subplot wasn’t Bi-Han’s betrayal per se but rather showing us mainly the already tense relationship between brothers, which in my opinion didn’t fully use the emotional impact the shattered brotherhood could otherwise have had. Of course, the game's storyline is a specific medium and with such a big cast, there is limited space to explore in depth characters’ psyche and thus some plots feel rushed to fit the greater scheme of things. Granted, the storyline and intro dialogues provided us enough nuances to know the conflict between Lin Kuei brothers is not so one-dimensional, even if so far only Bi-Han’s desire for freedom and independence is flashed out, while Scorpion & Smoke’s desire to uphold tradition seems to be solely the “good guys” thing. And don’t get me wrong, characters who have a strong moral sense are cool and inspiring on their own, but Kuai Liang and Tomas through the story mode have never given any real counterargument why the tradition should be upheld in the first place or how it benefit the clan, besides it was their father’s teaching.

(And I do find the “Lin Kuei only serves” mindset disturbing, when one remembers the clan members are trained from childhood to fight, to kill, and if needed to die for Earthrealm and doesn’t that resemble the Umgadi system whose members are denied any ties to family as their  main purpose is to serve the Royal Family? There is a huge difference between an adult person choosing on their own to dedicate their life to service in greater good - a very admirable trait! - and teaching children they are destined to be someone’s servants, because it’s the great “honor” and “tradition” that must be upheld. Just saying.)

Now, Bi-Han as the traitor (more or less) makes sense within the provided storyline, especially if we add the expanded knowledge about his motives and goals coming from intro dialogues. In contrast, Tomas is pretty much sidelined through the course of story mode and really, if not for the direct ties to adoptive brothers and intro dialogues, he could as well not be in the story at all. 

If the story played as it played, I fear Smoke’s choice to betray would not have that big impact, unless the truth about Liu Kang’s role as Keeper of Time came out (and with that his part in Smoke’s family death) or Shang Tsung managed to play on his desire to be seen as a true Lin Kuei while he is constantly denied the respect and omitted by other characters. Bi-Han is just a tip of the iceberg in that regard (and yet not once he denied Tomas right to consider himself the son of the late grandmaster or even his or Kuai Liang’s brother). In all fairness, Liu Kang contributes a lot to how Tomas is treated, as Fire Lord, despite the close relationship to Lin Kuei and being implied to be responsible for orphaning Tomas, literally did not acknowledge him in any meaningful way through the whole story mode. He has never called Smoke by his name, nor called him alongside the Sub-Zero and Scorpion (chapter 1 & 2) and despite Tomas’ fulfilling his duty to Earthrealm and helping in direct way to established Shirai Ruy, his deeds are still omitted in favor of Kuai Liang. 

Frankly, despite being one of Grandmaster’s sons, Smoke is never taken into account when it comes to holding any title within Lin Kuei, as Kuai Liang is treated as obviously choice, both as the next Grandmaster of Lin Kuei (after Bi-Han) and the new leader of Shirai Ryu (and let’s not forget Scorpion was the strategist/leader during battle, even if technically this was his first war and there were more experienced characters, including Ermac/king Jerrod.) Kuai Liang is a great warrior, no question about that, but it really feels like Tomas is acknowledged only by his adoptive brothers. 

So, if played right, Shang Tsung (or even Bi-Han?) could talk Tomas into joining “the Liu Kang’s opposition”, as he holds resentment for Fire Lord over the death of his family (though that one works best AFTER the big revelation). Intro dialogues also provided information there was a time he did not consider being adopted into Grandmaster’s family as anything good, which of course is understandable, considering it was Grandmaster's men who killed Tomas’ mother and sister for a simple accidental trespassing on Lin Kuei land. 

Not to mention he was not adopted because of compassion per se, but because of Grandmaster’s guilt. Considering how Tomas went from disliking the man and/or situation he was forced into to almost blindly holding to “tradition this”, “traditions that” mindset, I wonder if we should consider him as a potential victim of Stockholm Syndrome?

Also, what is interesting, Smoke looked up to Bi-Han ("And to think I once idolized you."). Granted, we don’t know how young Sub-Zero acted back then, besides being cold to Tomas, as intro dialogue pointed out, but I think there is something to say about Tomas idolizing the one brother that openly challenged their Father’s ideas. We have of course only evidence of Bi-Han’s criticizing Lin Kuei old politics in current story mode however as Sub-Zero’s “frustrations ran deep”  it is possible he was outspoken about the issue before. So it makes sense to assume the idolizing happened back in the days when Tomas (most likely) resented the man that decided to adopt him after his men murdered his mother and twin sister over a trivial matter - and maybe Sub-Zero’s headbutting with Father was what impressed Tomas the most? As in, however cold Bi-Han was, at least he didn’t pretend everything was okay?

Smoke’s BIO gives him the LOYALTY as a main theme

- and despite what happened between the brothers, he still hope for reunion with Bi-Han and refuses to give up his estranged brother to anyone outside Shirai Ryu for judgment, so we can’t say he and Bi-Han had never been on good terms. 

Frankly, the visual side of story mode adds a lot to this feeling, as with exception of like two scenes (awaiting for Liu Kang/meeting room and joining Kuai Liang and Bi-Han after Sub-Zero’s fight with Nitara and Ermac), Smoke is the one standing at Bi-Han’s right side, not Kuai Liang - the de facto second-in-line of succession. 

I won’t lie, this is pretty surprising detail - and who knows, maybe Smoke is supposed to have soome importance after all and/or is the middle child, thus occupying the more symbolic (prestige) place, the same as Bi-Han was usually placed at Liu Kang’s right side, implying his higher status as Grandmaster.

I, for one, would love to see Tomas either betraying Liu Kang on his own or joining Bi-Han, so we could have a new take on the Noob-Smoke team, this time without Smoke being cyberized and cut from memories but also challenging Keeper of Time's choices by characters that weren't the main villains in previous timeline(s). My heart would be bleeding for Kuai Liang as his friendship with Tomas is a great part of Lin Kuei lore but then Tomas, story wise, had valid reasons to resent Liu Kang (death of family, never being acknowledged). I wouldn’t cross out the possibility of Smoke  joining Bi-Han in later events (or pretending to join to spy on him, because you know, Tomas is the master of stealth, so he should be good at that stuff) but I fear NRS is not gonna give him any meaningful focus anytime soon. Johnny was joking how Tomas “got the wholesome sidekick thing down cold.” but looking at MK1’s story mode this is not a joke, just a truth.

Hi Thank you so much for the Ask!! Im going to section out by each individual operator if that's okay (I'm really bad at explaining things so please bear with me ;-;)

NAK'S RELATIONSHIPS WITH CHIMERA MEMBERS (+How I think Nak would draw them)

Beforehand: These are just my personal Headcanons from how I interpret their characters and voicelines!

SYD

I briefly mentioned Syd being someone Nak views as an older sister figure in her Bio so I'd like to touch more on that-

Nak, She sees Syd as a sister because Syd's the first person she's comfortable enough to talk about her personal experiences and cares enough about her that Nak shows interest in what Syd as to say. For a long while didn't have a healthy support system before she fled Laos . Being introduced to Syd, she was reluctant and dismissive for the first week or so. However, seeing how Syd was trying to at least be on good terms with her, she thought it was safe enough to give it a chance.

Syd (from her voicelines) is outgoing, friendly, strong-willed, and determined. Nikolai probably asked her to intergrate Nak into the group. Both of them being from wealthy families of people with political/military influence is something they have in common. She understood to an extent why Nak had difficulty trusting people (Not including the whole Naga Trauma stuff) and was willing to take up the challenge.

They hang out during breaks, Nak gets to experience Normal life stuff like a Girls Night, doing her hair, going shopping.

YEGOR

Yegor, having 3 kids himself, probably has an instinct to protect and look out for those who are younger in the field (from His interactions with Rodion and his discomfort with using children during interrogation). He's lowkey concerned abt Nak because she's one of the youngest members in the faction. He knows how people in their early 20s would act from his personal experience but Nak doesn't fit the mold and it's worrying, even if he doesn't say it.

Nak has cried because he called her "kid", she didn't even realize she was crying from that. It was like an inner child healing experience. She initially didn't like him because she felt like he was "treating her as if she's a child" but grew to respect him since they have pasts in organized crime and he feels like her idea of a dad.

NIKOLAI

Nikolai is hard on Nak (alot of cleaning duties, etc.) Because she's one of the youngest people in the faction. " If you wann work here you gotta be good at your job" mindset. He knows that she's a good operator so he pushes her to do her best, with boundaries of course.

Nak thinks of Nikolai as a better version of Naga. She says he's a pain in the ass but really respects him; He got her a job, he accommodated for her issues with routine mental check ups, and his methods with missions is efficient and more her style. She's called him Dad on accident a handful of times, I don't think Nikolai bothered to correct her though.

ISKRA

Iskra doesn't have an opinion on Nak, she respects Nak's ability as an operator but thinks she's a bit strange

Nak thinks Iskra is so cool. She doesn't know how to talk to her because she thinks Iskra is really pretty and admires her relationships with the other female operators. She wants to be friends with her.

Farah

Farah doesn't have an opinion in Nak, doesn't know her that well.

Nak is a bit intimidated by Farah because of her Accomplishments, respects her as an operator

Krueger

She thinks he's stupid and dumb (they kiss)

So I have this cousin who is a BTS army and also homophobic. She hates every gay romantic ship that ever exist in between BTS. She always watch the real content. Every Run BTS, Bon Voyage, Weverse Live etc. When we're tghter we sometimes talk about ship and everytime she express her disdain towards taekookers. She is aware about culties manipulated behavior. I can tell even with my eyes closed taekook isn't real not even million years. I always find their interaction cute, brotherly or friendly . But about Jikook I'm not sure what to say. Jm always acted different when he is with Jk and so do Jk. Every member flirt with each other but Jm and Jk when they do that it makes me uncomfortable. Their flirting is suggestive not brotherly at all.' Then she also point out which bestie gift you a private journey then make a video out of it. Then there's ear sucking. Who the hell even do that. 'Comfort my best friend by sucking his ear' even straight couple don't do that.' And she is even more mad when Jm went NYC and didn't post anything, kept it private.

Just goes to show you exactly why big chunks of this fandom are just ignoring Jikook.

It's not about their hate of shipping. Some of them hate the shipping, like your cousin, who sees how demented TKKs are, JK and Tae's bond is friendship and how pushing a queer relationship on them is pure shit.

But, with Jikook it's not the shipping they can't deal with (many claim it is, but that's way easier than admitting otherwise).

With Jikook it's Jikook - JK and JM and what is between them - they just cannot deal with.

These two men are just too much for them to handle. They are too real, as in "this is not a friendship we are seeing here...this is an actual queer relationship...nope, not dealing with that..."

Their bond, their relationship, their flirting, their everything are just too much in their faces.

So they don't want to hear about the ship, but they mainly don't want to hear or see Jikook together. And when Jikook are Jikooking, they are playing the avoidance game.

Her comment about JM's trip to NY, that one caught me a little off guard. Even that. JM travelling to NY and staying private about it, has them off balance. Because once again, it's so damn obvious that JM was there for JK and JK alone, and what they had was theirs and private and just MORE than a bandmate going to support another bandmate. Even that, by now, is obvious to your cousin, and I can only assume many other army.

You know, those that we have been saying for years now that simply choose to ignore JM and JK, their bond, their connection, their chemistry, their love.

This here, is exactly why their friendship isn't even mentioned. Because people have eyes and brains and see that it's sooooo much more than just a strong friendship.

So they ignore.

They don't talk about them.

They don't celebrate JM going to support JK for his solo debut in NY but they celebrate Tae going on stage at Inkigayo.

They talk about JK's lives without mentioning the Jikookery.

They take JK's words and twist them just so they don't have anything to do with JM. And then when he mentions another member it's a full blown party.

They cannot avoid JK mirroring JM's Face concept in his Seven photoshoot, so they either joke about it (JK's lazy stylists) or name call JK (thief, lazy etc.), everything but saying it's intentional and meaningful.

Your cousin there, she's (?) not any different than a big part of this fandom. And yes, it's homophobia driven. And all about the denial.

So, when Jikookers say that most of army are TKKs, I don't really agree with that. Yes, there are a lot of TKKs out there. But I think it's less about them being TKKs and more about them unwilling to deal with the fact that 2 members of their favourite band are actually a queer couple. Much of this is homophobia driven, some of it is fear. Of what it actually means for 2 out of 7 to be romantically involved.

And then, for these fans, it's easier to celebrate TKK interactions because they are safe, friendly, NOT QUEER. While Jikook are all but just friendly, and that, to that part of the fandom is like:

Bellatrix and Voldemort: My Meta

My Bellamort Meta 

My opinion on the relationship seems to be a bit unusual. A huge chunk of the fandom, somewhat stubbornly (and against evidence, in my opinion) will insist he only cares about himself – and maybe Nagini. A smaller amount do acknowledge that there is definitely affection there, but sometimes it is read as romantic/sexual rather than platonic. I’m in the latter category and going to explain why:

His reaction to her death

There seems to be a lot of debate about this is and whether it’s motivated by strategy or motivated by affection? I ask, why can’t both be true?

Strategy is a part of it. She’s referred to as “his last, best lieutenant,”. He has lost everything at this point, and I do believe part of why his reaction to her death is stronger than that of Nagini’s (that said, he does still try to scream when she dies too) is because he’s now well and truly…well…ducked. He has no Horcruxes left, and his servants have all now either been subdued beyond help or have been killed.

But I also believe, whilst the relationship is complex and he’s nevertheless an absolute d!ck to her at points, it was also a personal loss to him. He tries to attack her killer (ofc we never see him cast the spell so we don’t know for certain it was going to be the killing curse, however I believe that’s likely what he intended – or at least one hell of a cruciatus lol), and it allows him to finally overpower his opponents.

However, I don’t believe there’s considerable evidence to suggest it’s a romantic loss. He moves on pretty quickly, taunting Harry in the same way he does at the Graveyard and at the Ministry. We don’t hear about him glancing back at her body, tearing up or acting in a strong emotional way following the scream and subsequent “explosion” and attempted attack on Molly. To me, this reads like friend or familial love and loss.

The Ministry rescue

Same as above. It’s definitely a sign of his care and compassion towards her, but nothing points to romance to me. I’ve also seen people use it to justify the Cursed Child (suggesting he did it because she was expecting Delphi), which….what?!

I also find people overlook the fact that he was physically unable to get to 9/10 of his Death Eaters. Whilst I can believe she was his favourite of the bunch that went, I don’t think him rescuing her and “leaving” (again, he had no choice) the others supports that she's the only one he actually cared about.

Also, whilst Fudge physically seeing Voldemort on his way out was definitely beneficial to Dumbledore and Harry, I think the man’s goose was cooked regardless. It would be hard to have 9 captured Death Eaters without explanation (and I have no issue believing Lucius, at least, would have no hesitation whatsoever in throwing Voldy under the bus if promised with either freedom or a shortened stay in Azkaban), plus they had tons of new eye witness accounts (the entire Order, Hermione, Ron, Neville, Ginny and Luna) to support that Death Eaters were back taking orders from him. So why not take his most loyal servant with him, even if he is seen in the process?

I also see people mentioning that he could have freed her at any time. But could he? It took a year to get Lucius, Dolohov, the Lestrange brothers and the rest out. Whilst he was definitely pissed at the lot, it seems unnecessarily harmful to his own cause to let 9 of his servants rot in jail needlessly. He has around 30 in the previous book, so that makes a quarter of his overall army.

“Bella”

Does it show strong affection that he calls her that? Yes, it does. Nobody else is nicknamed by him. But “Bella”, let’s be clear, is a nickname, not a pet name. Nicknames are used more casually by family members, or by friends.

We never hear of him calling her Darling, Dear, Sweetheart, My Love etc., which are all pet names. Pet names are what couples use for each other, and in more intimate familial settings (usually from parents to their children). They suggest a (much) higher level of intimacy than nicknames do.

Some people have suggested he calls her “Bella” out of emotional manipulation. It’s an interesting point, but I think he calls her that because he likes her – pure and simple.

Horcrux Harry

This is, I think, the most interesting argument I have seen put forward to suggest they are together. However, I do think there’s an explanation for why Harry’s attention is always drawn so quickly to Bellatrix (and no it’s not because Harry himself – as in not the Horcrux, just the boy - has the hots for her lol. I’ve seen that argument, not actually from Bellamort truthers but the opposite, and it’s always made me roll my eyes.)

She is the only one of the ten Death Eaters that Harry has a personal connection with (through Sirius – also Draco). She’s also the only one with any real relevance to the plot. Dolohov was always cool to me, but you could take the guy out of the story and it would literally make no difference (it didn’t matter who Rowle went to the café with).

It makes sense that she always catches his attention for those reasons. It’s not because Voldy’s Horcrux is panting away inside Harry*, in my opinion, and it’s certainly not because Harry himself is turned on by her (as if lol, he always hated her).

*God that sounds wrong…

Hufflepuff’s cup

This just doesn’t work as a pro-Bellamort argument to me. Lucius had a Horcrux too (I personally believe they were his duel right-hands in the first war and that’s why), plus Rodolphus and Rabastan Lestrange also have access to the vault with the cup in it.

Yes she calls it “my vault”, but a wife might say “my bank account” even if she shares it with her husband. So I think it was equally used between the three of them.

Voldemort’s affections aren’t limited towards Bellatrix

Voldemort seems to be exceptionally fond of Snape (many have theorised this is because both men share some similarities and he has some paternal-ish affection towards Severus, which I agree with). He even makes a point to honour his promise to leave Lily alive, an enemy combatant who “defied him three times” (and we know how that worked out for him). That is very significant indeed. It is every bit as big an indicator of his affection for Severus as his rescue of Bellatrix, in my opinion. Yes, he killed Snape in the end, but he “had to”. I believe, without the shadow of a doubt, he would have killed even Nagini had he believed she was the Master of the Elder Wand. Nothing ever would have stopped him in his quest for immortality and to kill Harry. Narcissa and Draco also call Snape “[his] favourite” (during the Spinner’s End and Dumbledore’s death scenes), even though both should have a bias towards Bellatrix. Narcissa also isn’t corrected by Bellatrix, in spite of how defensive of the Dark Lord and their relationship she usually is, which I find interesting. And, as others have raised, we are to presume Voldemort taught Snape how to fly.

He also rather likes Barty. They seem to have had pretty intimate conversations about Crouch Sr and the difficult relationship between father and son. He also allowed Barty to see him in an extremely vulnerable position, and he was the only one allowed to other than Wormtail (although Wormtail is merely tolerated, and kept around because he has limited self-respect and will do demeaning tasks with little pushback). Barty even expresses his desire to be “closer than a son”. Perhaps I’m reading too much into it, but…that sounds kind of romantic? To me at least. Of course, it would be unreciprocated as with Bellatrix IMO (I’m on the fence about Voldy being asexual, but I definitely consider him aromantic). But for Barty to have developed any such feelings, there must have been genuine platonic intimacy between the two as with Bellatrix. He also calls Barty “his most faithful”, in absence of the man himself, which suggests to me he truly thinks it. He doesn’t have to butter up Barty when he’s not even present. He only calls Bellatrix that to her face, meanwhile.

And then, of course, there’s Nagini but I don’t think I need to go into detail.

The Cursed Child

The Cursed Child isn’t canon to me, nor is the Fantastic Beasts series (or even the main movie series). The seven books, and them alone, are. I also highly suspect the two men who wrote the Cursed Child didn’t even bother reading the books. The characters act more like their movie versions (especially Ron the Useless Idiot and Perfect Girlboss Hermione – by the way, Kingsley Shacklebolt is canonically the Minister for Magic when the events in TCC are going on. They couldn’t even get that right!). They added Voldemort’s weird, erotic whispering of Harry’s name (seriously, why?) which was only ever in the movies. Plus the random obsession over Cedric Diggory (pretty much a non-entity in the book but played by an A-list actor in the movies), of all people.

“No Higher Pleasure”

Like most readers, I just interpret this as an excuse for Voldy to be a d!ck, setting Bellatrix up with a fake compliment (with quite sarcastic delivery IMO) and then ripping her a new one in front of everybody. I agree it’s a gross-sounding phrase for Bellatrix to use though. It reminds me of “Aberforth’s inappropriate charms on goats,” which sounds dirty but likely has a comparatively innocent explanation about it (I think Rowling phrased it that way to get a laugh out of the adults, but I highly doubt he actually SA’d any goats – we’re meant to root for him after all). Also the “Harry thought of Ginny and her blazing look, and her lips on his…” It can make your mind go to dirty places, for sure, but I doubt Rowling actually had fellatio in mind when writing it.

Hidden Romance?

I just don’t understand the logic for Rowling to have been required to hide their relationship. The physical side, sure, but that would be a given (the Weasley’s sex life is never alluded to, but obviously all those kids didn’t come from nowhere and we don’t need to be told that).

We never see them interact in a way that suggests the romance is anything other than one-sided. Voldemort never calls her anything romantic (nor does she him). They don’t hold hands, caress each other, embrace or kiss at any point in the series. He also seems to dislike when she talks to him “as if to a lover” and refuses to let her take his hand.

Torture/ Murder

Now, she definitely isn’t a butt monkey a la Lucius but it is very clear to me that Voldemort has and will torture Bellatrix if needed. She’s absolutely bricking it when he finds out that she and the others messed up their Ministry mission, and given how long they’ve known each other I don’t think she would have reacted that way if he was above physically harming her. She also runs like a bat out of hell, shoving people out of her way just like Lucius, shortly before he murders everyone he can following the cup incident. Again, I don’t see her behaving like that if she trusted him not to hurt her.

I’ve also seen people argue that she looked fine at the Battle of Hogwarts just a day later. I think this is the movie timeline confusing people, because in the last movie there only seems to be about a day between the Malfoy Manor and Battle of Hogwarts scenes. However, in the books there seems to have been several weeks between both events. So I think she was harmed, but had time to recover(same with Narcissa and Draco). Lucius obviously got the brunt of it though, as Voldemort had no affection whatsoever for him by that point.

As for the possibility of death, we have the “we shall all perish if [he] comes now” line (again, why would she say this if she doesn’t believe it?). But, more damningly, the cross of killing her (and her family) seems to cross Voldemort’s own mind: “They would suffer his retribution if they had no good reason for calling him back”.

Other reasons why I’m not pro-Bellamort:

Various quotes such as “longing for closeness”, “staring with worshipful fascination”, “breathless and imploring” etc. They all suggest that there’s something of a barrier between the two. I just don’t see her acting that way if she’s getting d!cked down by the object of her affections, presumably on what would be a rather regular basis, behind the scenes.

Rowling, until she sold out by stamping her approval on the Cursed Child (which, like others, I don’t even think she read before she did so), never suggested in interviews or elsewhere that the relationship was anything other than one-sided. Take, for example, this interview where she talks about B’s love/obsession for V in very clear detail, even mentioning the fact that she wanted to have sex with him, but no mention of him reciprocating (she also says “he only ever loved power, and himself” in response to questions about his romantic history):

The fact it isn’t alluded to by any other characters. Not even one of the Malfoys. Narcissa, in particular, pulls no punches. I can definitely see her bringing it up to annoy/anger Bellatrix during one of their many moments of conflict/disagreement.

I wish nothing but good things for Oliver Stark and Lou Ferrigno Jr.

They gave us such an authentic, gentle, tender experience. I've watched the clip of that kiss several dozen times now.

Oliver, especially, has been amazing in his interviews and social media posts, empathetic and honest and sweet. I don't know his sexuality and I don't speculate in real people's sexualities, but regardless he seems like a true ally. He seems to Get It.

As someone who came out later in life** it really touches my heart what they're doing.

9-1-1 has always seemed to try to do good by their queer characters and I really appreciate that.

Hen and Karen have always been a fantastic and very real feeling example of a wlw relationship.

This show is doing amazing. I wish nothing but good and happy things for the cast and crew who make this happen.

Tw: repression, self harm, drug use, shitty relationships both familial and romantic.

I tried to come out as a teenager in the early 2000s after I kissed a girl for the first time. It did not go well.

My mother was a complicated woman and she loved me very much, but when I told her I was bi (I prefer pan now but at the time I didn't have that word) she told me it was a phase and that she was disappointed, that she would always love me but that it was wrong in the eyes of God and she couldn't accept it.

Disappointing my mother was worse than her being angry. It felt like my heart was carved out of my chest. I feel like if she had been angry or openly cruel I could have fought back, but her sadness destroyed me. I was 16 then and I continued to live at home until I was 24. I'm in my mid/late 30s now.

So I repressed that part of myself for well over a decade and spent a lot of time depressed and miserable. I self harmed and did A LOT of drugs. I'm clean now except for super occasional weed use. I have a lot of scars from self harm.

My mom died several years ago and it wasn't until after her death that I allowed myself to even think about it, any of it. I was in a relationship with a man for eight years that was loving but he was an alcoholic and I had to walk on eggshells around him because of his mental health struggles; he was emotionally abusive but in a way that was only apparent in hindsight. I thought that my relationship with him was as good as I was going to get. We broke up not long after my mom died.

The only family member I am out to is my older sister, who has been amazing and accepting and loves me completely. Without her support I would be lost.

I have now dated/hooked up with women, men, nb and trans people. I have explored my own gender identity (it's whatever, I don't feel like a woman despite having the female equipment and appearing female in body, I feel pretty masculine but not like a man either, and I don't have strong opinions on pronouns, but I feel like I fail at femininity and masculinity in equal measure so I call myself genderqueer. I don't have any desire to take hormones or have any surgeries, I just want to be a person without having to perform gender).

I live in a conservative small city in the US south and I feel disconnected from the wider queer community. I don't know how to bridge that gap. There is a small queer community here but you can't really be openly out and be safe.

I'll be going to my first pride event this June. I'm excited and terrified because I don't feel like I'm queer enough or The Right Kind of queer, which is such a stupid stress to have, but I don't have many friends to talk about this with and I am hoping to get out there and make some but I'm nervous. I'm socially awkward and kinda weird. I'm also single and trying to mingle, lol.

I like who I am now but it was an incredibly difficult road to get to this place. I'm still on that journey, and maybe I always will be but that's ok. I'm finally myself.
