I headcannon that in one of Maedhros less sane moments short after his rescue, where he is deemed sane enough to be left unattended, he cuts off a lot of his hair from the side of his head and keeps it that way for many years, with short periods of time where he grows it out again, just to spite as many as possible, for lack of better coping, and only grows it out fully after Nírnaeth Arnoediad.
