That fireside chat has me thinking about Dorian's views on leadership and how it was influenced by his home and parents.
#critical role#cr3#text post#dorian#just the way that his parents are less of a monarchy rulers and more people who offer guidance and wisdom#i know we just got silken squall lore but i need more#because it seems that he was cloistered away more as overprotctiveness#(which makes me wanna go back to see the scene with him and his dad again)#but dorians idea of leadership being based in comfort and wisdom. guidance#less of someone being in charge#less hierarchal too#like when cyrus in kymal said 'ill follow your lead'#and dorian said 'co leaders. side by side'#he also wouldn't see himself in those positions because of his anxiety and doubt#despite the fact he is already a very comforting presence and with a little more confidence in himself and his ideas#he could actually make a good leader#and then there is the views on freedom#god i need a whole write up on dorian after that fireside chat#this is just adhd word vomit maybe ill make a whole meta later

yet another oc that only exists because i wanted to write something very specific
(middle is a little older, hence her scar healing. i like to think she gets a glass eye at some point)
anyway this is mira! (they/she) since that wip is almost 20k words and counting i won’t give away too much but long story short she’s the result of meta going “one last time, i promise” and adopting yet another kid
also galaxia kinda indirectly picked the name :)
i’ve mentioned before that i headcanon that pretty much all astrals are autistic and this is just kinda an extension of that. whereas meta tends to suppress his emotions and conform to others, mira…doesn’t. she gets uncomfortable and upset and lashes out at people easily, and working through their emotions is no small task.
the main reason i chose to write them that way was for the sake of narrative but i’ve grown attached to it because there’s a lot of ideas there i’d like to explore. stuff about navigating emotions and relationships when existing is so suffocatingly uncomfortable. it’s not something i could center around Kirby himself, but i think it makes sense with a post character development meta knight.
they are very loved (omg oldee cameo???)
kirby was definitely very excited to have younger siblings after being used to being the youngest in the room for so long!! (with the like. one and only exception being gooey.) he’s super affectionate with both of them and wants to have a close relationship one day, but for now mira is pretty unappreciative of that fact lol. they don’t like being pestered for hugs
everyone else is okay tho
(i know that’s hard to read. oops. “obvious bite marks”. siblings being siblings.)
mira also has a very love/hate relationship with the egg kid, being so close in age they kinda Have to get along but in typical sibling nature they also fight a lot. sure it’s probably rough for a while but i think in the end they’d be good buddies. maybe not as close as Kirby and Bandee but still.
anyway i have a lot of thoughts and am very busy but. i’m really enjoying writing about all this lately it’s been fun ^^
#I picked a name and then proceeded to write a comic in pen in which i used that name and posted it#and only after all that did i learn that mira is becoming a very popular name. which i generally avoid#but oh well. it’s stuck#im gonna be completely honest a lot of how i pick names for characters is based off of how many puns i can make out of it#im sorry to disappoint you with that information /j#kirbyposting#my art or something#meta knight#kirby#king dedede#metadede#Kirby oc#semi future au#I swear i’ll introduce oldee one day im just bad at having drawing ideas#also trying very hard to not make self deprecating comments over some of this art cause i just. don’t really want to spend forever redrawing#stuff anymore. like I used to do for a lot of these posts. It’s whatever#anyway kinda a part two to yesterday’s post (as in: I made sure they were both ready at the same time so i could queue them together lol)#weirdly enough this isn’t all that different from my dmk interpretation#i can’t really decide what color she is either#part of me wants to say bright blue red eyes because i think that would look absolutely sick but that seems like a bit too much blue#all things considered#maybe bright yellow blue eyes idk ill figure it out later (maybe)

i finished isolde's bonus story the other night
#personal#r1999#...fuck#the fact that she and her brother tried so hard to look for hope in a world of despair#and the history of likely hereditary mental illness#with her and her mother's issues not really being taken seriously beyond being pitied#and the fact that they're all haunted by the specter of a sibling who died too young...#that line about her mother wearing those 'burning iron shoes' hit really REALLY hard#and also adds fuel to my jewish isolde headcanon#(maybe ill write a meta post later)

If i ask nicely, would you consider writing the core of Light and L character like you did for Shuake? (IT'S BRILLIANT BTW!! You're so galazy brain. I love reading any meta or just silly posts you posted here <3) because you mention Light a couple time in Akechi's part and now i need to know your thought on him and L.
(Also, about the death note wip you're cooking right now, is it a oneshot or multiple chapters fic? Im super excited for it!)
i ABSOLUTELY would thank you so much for asking and for your lovely kind words. and im sorry this took me seven years to get to i just kept psyching myself out.
here's the ren & goro post this ask refers to for anyone wondering. the 'core' refers to my answer to a writing meme:
26. What would you describe as OOC? [...] it's the same approach i take to language tbh particularly in pronunciation. once you understand how a language forms its sounds at a base level, you dont struggle with the accent on particular words, and you can encounter words you've never seen before and understand how they're likely to be said/spelled/etc. so once i learn to 'speak' a character they come more naturally. idk if that comparison makes sense to anyone else but it does to meeeee all this to say i think a character is ooc if they do or say something i cant reconcile with that core!
the death note wip is a multichap!! thank you for your interest!!! ill talk about it more once i've stopped tying myself in knots plotting it!! broadly it's a what-if type au which has led me to replot an entire series from scratch dont look at me
anyway lawlight below. i will say ive been really desperately wanting to do like a video essay or something about death note which would be a lot about L and light specifically and how i interpret their characters so ill try and not go toooooo insane in this post but maybe ill go more insane later. in a video. with my human voice.
(edit: i failed i went insane)
light - one-way road to the sky
ok let's talk about one of my favourite scenes of the entire series, which i think is widely not super well understood but honestly to me holds the key to light's entire character. it's right there in volume 1
sorry, the only digital copy ive got on hand is the scanlation. for comparison the official print copy reads:
bubble 1: hey, maki, wanna party tomorrow with some guys from s. college? ten o'clock. bubble 2: yeah, totally! bubble 3: hey, can i go too? bubble 4: my mom isn't here yet? what's that nag doing, geez! light (thinking): damn... light (thinking): start looking around you... light (thinking): and all you see are people the world would be better off without.
this happens within the first 40 pages of the first volume. and it's like. haha hey light what the fuck? this is a totally normal scene in everyday life. people are talking about living their lives. nobody's done anything remotely reprehensible in this scene. and light's just walking through the streets experiencing apparently unprompted and quite extreme misanthropy. what's wrong with him
ok let's have a quick look at the first time we meet light in the anime.
[...]
[...]
cool cool cool im gonna pivot again let's look at the first song (besides the overture) in the musical.
ok rook! we get it! light yagami is out here like damn we live in a society time to kill people about it. this is news to nobody! we all know this!! that's what the series is about! why are we rehashing all of this
great. cool. awesome. let's look at all those scenes one more time. but this time don't look at light. instead let's look at the people around him
in the opening shots of the anime (after the shinigami world, which actually is much the same theme): news of brutal murder is narrated over establishing shots of tokyo. light is shown dead-eyed, going about his ordinary life, surrounded by random other civilians doing the same thing.
in the musical, light isn't angry that murders happen. he's angry about the inaction and complicity of the ordinary people around him.
these scenes aren't highlighting that light thinks crime is bad. we all know crime is bad. the point of these scenes is to contrast light's frustration and fury against the reactions of the people around him. here's what light yagami is seeing: we're surrounded with rot. but nobody's reacting. and then life just goes on. so suddenly all those completely normal scenes of people being concerned with the superficial details of their life aren't just normality, they're complicity. day in, day out. so the world is rotting, and to light, it seems that everyone is completely ok with that. that's just the way things are. and that disgusts and depresses him. on top of than that, it isolates him: he feels like he's the only one who sees or cares about this, that everyone dismisses him as naive, that no one else can be trusted, that everyone else is able to ignore something he sees as inexcusable. this is a sentiment he repeats again and again. it reads as arrogance, and it is, but it's also isolation - after all it's lonely at the top and just as lonely to feel like you're at the top even if you arent
can i talk about the iliad again? is that ok with everyone. im gonna talk about the iliad again
in book 1 of the iliad, the commander of the greek army insults achilles by publicly and unlawfully taking a prize (the girl briseis) who rightfully belonged to achilles. achilles reacts by withdrawing his troops from the army, dooming the greeks' campaign. achilles had a lot of friends in the army, so why would he essentially sentence them all to death for something that only agamemnon did? well, (because agamemnon did something publicly that everyone knew was wrong, and yet nobody was willing (or at least able) to stand up for achilles and stop it from happening. achilles, disgusted by the inaction of the bystanders, turned his back on all of them. fun fact i nearly wrote a mini thesis (an academic one not just a long post on tumblr) about the intersection btwn this book of the iliad and legal theory but law+classics is such a niche interdisciplinary field my professor couldnt find anyone who could supervise me so i couldnt do it. anyway that's not the point
is this right or fair? who cares, not the point. what im interested in is what that kind of behaviour says about the individual. light, like achilles, is a highly idealistic person. we all know that in the abstract, but take a second to really really dig into it, because it's actually quite an interesting fact about a character who is popularly understood as being cold and unfeeling or flatly psychotic and on a power trip. idealism isn't naivety, it's not optimism, it's not even really a happy thing. idealism is simply a firm belief in the way things should be at the cost of refusing or being unable to accept what is.
this is the core of light yagami to me. light doesn't become kira because he's cold or destructive or crazy. he doesn't actually even do it because he's spiteful or misanthropic. it's very much the opposite. he's misanthropic because he believes in the world so much. isn't that a great contradiction! ok here i'll show you some proof.
in an early scene (also in volume 1), light describes himself as an optimist and ryuk finds that interesting.
so light is an optimist. he believes in a bright future for humanity. he wants to protect humanity. he likes humanity. no, he doesn't believe that people are inherently good, but he does believe in some goodness as a part of humanity and wants to protect the best of people, in an egotistical way:
how do we reconcile that with a young man who walks through the streets listening to completely ordinary conversations by ordinary people and reacts by wishing death on everyone talking?
let's split out what's going on here. remember what's happening in light's head. light yagami is 17 years old. he grew up with a police chief for a father (in a fictional world where the police are the literary stand-in for law as justice so just pretend for a second that police are good im sorry), watching his father work tirelessly to fight crime - but crime continues, making this an endless, thankless task. and while crime continues, so does the world around him. every day light sees atrocities on the news, and he sees atrocities brought home, and then he lives his ordinary life and watches the people around him apparently not give a shit, only concerned with the petty details of their own little lives. bystanders watching wrong happen, selfishly unaffected. day in, day out. that idealism is getting colder the longer this unendurable injustice goes on. so achilles condemns his friends to death.
what human trait is being exhibited? realistically it's helplessness. would being miserable about crime help to end crime? of course not. people have to go on with their lives, that's a fact, it's even a strength. even light begins the series completely unable to do a thing about the rot he sees around him, which is part of why he's so depressed. but that's not what light is seeing. light is seeing ordinary people appear to choose not to give a fuck about injustice. the thing that's sparking his disgust is apathy, real or apparent. light yagami is an idealist. he wants a better future - a utopia that only he can imagine - something that can only happen if either everyone becomes as good as he is, or he takes control.
if you leave an idealist in an unwinnable situation for too long, their pure belief will start to curdle. it will not turn to realism. they will not accept what is. they will only become more and more bitter that what should be, isn't. they will become a cynicist. this is really the heart of my argument and ive made it a million times and ill make it again. idealism and cynicism are not opposites, they're not even two sides of a coin. they are two points on the same line which moves very quickly in only one direction. this is where i start when im writing him: how do i make someone who believes so hard that it's killing him? someone who believes so hard it makes him believe in nothing?
then we find the third point on that line, which someone can reach by gaining sudden power - for example, a magic notebook that kills people: radicalisation.
how do we reconcile his desire to protect humanity with the fact that what he's trying to protect against is also humanity? how can i say light loves humanity when he has such disdain for them? easy peasy: light sees himself as the messiah. my bumper sticker that says ask me about light's martyr complex PLEASE ask me about light's martyr complex i wrote a song about it ask me about light seeing himself as the sacrificial lamb on the (and then the bumper sticker cuts off)
light loves humanity the way a twisted shepherd might love his sheep. something to be protected, but something beneath you that can't be trusted to know what's best for them. humanity is something he loves because it's endearingly pathetic, something to pity and save. repeatedly he refers to becoming kira as a personal sacrifice, something that costs him his soul but that he has to do. it's a delusion of grandeur driven by dual purposes of ego and some desperate wish to change a status quo he's been despairing about for years.
tl;dr: light believes with all his soul in something he thinks is impossible, and it's killing him slowly, and then a chance to change the world just falls out of the sky
L - isolate yourself until you can make believe it's just a game
steeples fingers. i have Things to Say about L Lawliet.
ok listen. listen. Listen. listen. are you listening? listen. in general i think people kind of misunderstand characters who are hyper-intellectual and/or behave unconventionally in social settings. you're all going to fucking kill me for this but i think there's a tendency to like... accidentally turn any character who falls vaguely in this broad category into sheldon cooper. god im sorry i feel like i just shot everyone's collective dog
specifically what i mean by that is that 'awkward' gets flanderised in a way that eventually becomes a caricature of itself, because there is so much nuance to actual social awkwardness that it's very easy to kind of pick a template and stick to it without really thinking about what makes that character 'awkward' and what the root and type of awkwardness is, unique to them. so instead we just get, like... generic big word user. generic driven by logic and logic alone guy. generic guy who doesn't Do Well with other people, for Smart Reasons.
here's a list of true things about L which i think are safe to say are uncontroversial
intuitive
logical, master of deductive reasoning
competitive
behaves in an odd way that draws attention
is aware of that fact
focuses extremely hard on his cases and only cares about being a detective not anything else
isolates himself and doesn't like talking to people partly for his own safety partly because it's boring to him
here are things i have seen in characterisation of L which i would like to dispute
makes decisions and draws conclusions based solely on logic and evidence
doesn't understand social cues
here's a list of alternate interpretations which i would like to propose and that i am willing to back up with evidence and/or by physically fighting over them
is driven primarily not by logic or evidence, but by incredible intuition which is supported by logic and evidence when it suits him
has a keen understanding of people, interpersonal relationships, and social norms
leverages that understanding frequently to his benefit
feels that he is not capable of / not a part of emotions that he sees as being typically human (see his speech about being a monster)
and yet in an abstract and self-contradictory and low-priority way still kind of desires connection, leaving him emotionally isolated
chooses to behave oddly on purpose, not because he doesn't realise he's behaving oddly, but because it is not a priority for him
those might seem like fine distinctions at some points, but stray slightly off the mark and his characterisation begins to vary wildly. for example, interpret L as being bemused or unaware of social cues, and one possible characterisation that may stem from that understanding (which i have seen) is that L doesn't understand sarcasm or jokes - which is demonstrably untrue. L demonstrates weak social skills because social skills aren't a priority for him, not because he doesn't understand social norms. after all he does a reasonably convincing 'i am a normal dudeguy' voice on at least two occasions (suzuki the information line guy and asahi the calling matsuda for drinks guy). even with the taskforce, when his behaviour is more of his usual bizarre self, he still makes the effort to treat them respectfully and meet them where they are, explaining himself when they ask, chatting with them, holding ordinary conversations. you can read this any number of ways but my point is that he can do all of this with relatively little struggle
it's also very much not the case that L doesn't have feelings or care about other people. he's ruthless and he's cool with causing people to die if he has to, but he reacts with visible distress to the deaths of the FBI agents, to ukita's death, to the prospect of other members of the taskforce dying. he does care, he's just not morally driven as a priority.
ok but if he can cosplay as Normal Dudeguy with no trouble then why doesn't he. why does he conduct all his business in dark rooms apart from the entire world forever. is it gauche to use a section of my own fic to explain my point? im going to do it anyway
It is easy to identify in Light what he has long known in himself. That little pearl of disruption, grown around an irritating grain of something just unique and tremendous enough to be uncomfortable to the more ordinary around them. L has hidden it by hiding himself. Light has hidden it by hiding within himself. L's black letter is to Light’s vapid smile is to Kira's invisible bullet.
(honestly a lot of what i have discussed here is also covered in this fic so in case this fucking three thousand word essay is not enough for you you can go read that.)
something L and light significantly have in common is that their intellect and unique way of thinking really set them apart from everyone in the world, which is incredibly isolating. but while L has the 'benefit' (arguably could be a detriment but i think he sees it as a benefit) of a unique upbringing which allows him to use his skills to their full extent without worrying about really anything else, light is very much trapped by social convention. while light's life is privileged and materially perfect, he's stuck inside what society expects of him, while L is able to exist completely outside that paradigm. the result is that light has retreated within himself and spends all day playing a part, barely tolerating the monotony and apathy of the world around him by mechanically performing as expected while smothering the part of him that never has an opportunity to truly come out until kira. L, on the other hand, has no reason to put up with a society that is, for lack of a better term, really just beneath him. so he retreats. remember that the first volume/chapter of the manga is called 'boredom'.
you can see that even in his comparatively limited interactions with the task force, he is having to exercise a level of patience to explain to them what he's thinking at every stage, to have to defend his methods, his instincts, his decisions, etc, needing to step through every stage of his reasoning so that the others can follow and won't object. this is NOT just about masking his odd behaviour, it's also very much about having to step through his morals and his process, which is second nature to him but is new to everyone else and needs explaining. it is visibly exhausting to him, and this is with people he actually seems to like well enough. eg during yotsuba arc when light and soichiro keep raising moral concerns, and he has those little "here we go again" moments (which i love SO much and are so telling of him to me) even though he doesn't let his frustration show. which is why he usually does not bother with it and prefers to work alone. he sits the way he does even though he knows it's odd, because he feels he need to sit that way. when light calls it out, he doesn't question that people will think he's strange, so he's clearly aware. he just explains himself.
but if he were out with people on the regular, he'd need to defend himself constantly. the things L does are not conventional. yes the sitting is just an oddity of his so it's a good example, but it's not just the things that are odd that cause a problem: he frequently makes decisions which seem to make massive leaps of logic nobody else (except light) can follow, and often his actions are morally questionable or even reprehensible. all that is because L is extremely pragmatic and results-focused. it kind of doesn't matter to him how he gets from A to B as long as he gets to B. but the way his mind works is that he makes big jumps that make perfect sense to him but would draw curiosity or objection from anyone who doesn't think the way he does. it would be absolutely exhausting to have to constantly defend every strange or questionable thing he did, so he just retreats.
when he works with other people, i think it's worth noting that the team dynamic never actually struggles for L's awkwardness. this is something i really like about death note honestly - L is quirky and strange, but the series doesn't do that thing where it's like He's A Genius Of Course He's Rude To Everyone. he's actually not. for the most part, L is courteous, patient, and polite. he's sometimes blunt or abrupt, but he very rarely does the thing where he's obliviously cruel or brushes people off. he's considerate of people's needs, he's visibly compassionate of other people's emotional difficulties, and he very rarely loses his patience. when matsuda tries to tell the locked-up light about kira resuming activity, L snaps "Matsuda!" to stop him, and then immediately corrects himself to go "I mean, Matsuda-san." it would have been really easy for the series to do that tropey shit where he's so smart that he doesn't bother with politeness, but he factually does. he makes the effort to treat people politely even when he's not actually being kind. when he's asked to explain himself, the reader can see he's tired and annoyed, but he doesn't take it out on people. on the odd occasion he does make fun of someone for being slow, he does so in mostly light-hearted ways. so he is very capable of dealing with other people directly. his lack of social skills aren't for lack of understanding. he just can't be bothered. it's a waste of energy to try and behave 'normally' or to do things that other people find acceptable, whether that's due to social norm or common morality. it is so, so much easier for L to do things alone. without the need to explain or defend his behaviour to anyone, his isolation turns real world problems into something almost purely theoretical. so it really is like a game for him, at least at first.
whatever
i think it's really important for a character like L to not be fooled by the surface-level categorisation of 'smart awkward character'. we really need to find what's driving his awkwardness. it's not ignorance, it's not even really disdain, it's exasperation. he's tired of being surrounded by people who just can't keep up with him, and he does not have enough energy or interest to spend his time handholding everyone through his process, so he just does whatever the hell he wants and avoids people as much as possible so he doesn't have to deal with it.
look i know this is a really long way to say stuff that people mostly already know, but i think L is one of the most finely nuanced characters in the series because he looks like such a simple expression of a known archetype and the ways in which he subverts expectations are so granular that it's easy to completely miss them even while appreciating how interesting he is. the way this translates into how i write him is that he's polite and has a lot of patience until he simply doesn't, at which point he'll inwardly or subtly express that he wishes he didn't have to bother with this shit, that he picks up on fine social and emotional details that other people will totally miss, but that he'll always put his own whims and plans before anything else.
tl;dr: L behaves like someone who is constantly moving at his own pace and for whom dealing with people is rarely worth the effort, but this does not make him inept or unkind.
#i also wanna say i have my own personal headcanons regarding like#l and light's experience with neurodivergence etc#but that doesn't play into my analysis here so much. this is just about how i read their behaviour and motivations#diagnosing fictional characters is not really something i feel comfortable doing out loud#because i dont feel it's my place to do that. ill just keep those thoughts in my head#rookthots#death note#long post#i got this ask in like september#im so sorry#i got stressed about sharing my opinions on the internet so i just sat on it for months#IT'S MY OPINIONS. MY OPINIONS ONLY. only my personal thoughts and opinions#only my personal approach to writing these characters#only my personal fucking doctorate on lightology that im presenting on tumblr

(long post about purgatory and meta and rp)
sigh one thing ive been thinking is that it feels a bit unfair to see so many people complaining or doomposting over how purgatory affects the overarching qsmp rp story or how it ~interrupted arcs~ or is ~disturbing current storylines~ or ~narratively unsatisfying~ like. Sure. its a bit abrupt and most players were caught off guard because lore-wise it stems from the federation which means none of them were told about anything beforehand
but... its only been three days. maybe we could have a little faith? like idk ill be soooooo out there rn and say that maybe the admins did this now for a reason. maybe itll make sense later on. we already see lore repercussions with elquackity and his motives and all the nods to the eggs.
theres fair criticism to be made (when done respectfully) if youre mainly here for the roleplay but i feel like we sometimes need to remind ourselves that the qsmp storytelling is a VERY ambitious project. lmao. imagine being the writing team and trying to wrangle 20+ characters with distinct points of view and journeys on an ever-changing story because of the very nature of live rp. its practically IMPOSSIBLE to tie up every loose end neatly and at this point i dont think we should expect that. keeping up momentum with all plotlines must also be pretty hard, cc's schedules and outside factors like server programming and building and mod tweaking and all those meta elements considered and so on and so on
i DO also want the story to move forward and be cohesive and make sense in a satisfactory way. like i really do!!!!!!! but i try to understand that thats not ALL the qsmp is about. from the start quackity said the server wouldn't be exclusive to the rp aspect. it sure is that way right now, but thats because most of the active members are VERY passionate about roleplaying. thats a good thing! they have fun and its fun to watch and the experience is mostly good for everyone because it corresponds to their expectations to an extent
the thing about purgatory is that i feel like its a lot more meta than most people doomposting realize. it ties into the story, sure, but to me it feels like the sudden switch in environment and vibes and stakes isnt actually catered to the rp and thats FINE. like thats not what it exists for and thats fineeeeeee
pac for one has said he appreciates the event for the change of pace, though its very hard (lol), because regular qsmp was starting to feel a bit stale to him and he was kind of running out of things to do. THATS A GREAT THING! managing player engagement like that is awesome and sometimes necessary. YES, purgatory caters to a very different playstyle than what we're used to -- and thats one of its strenghts.
a lot of hispanic creators have also felt this!!!! roier, rivers and carre most prominently have been VERY excited about this event because its similar in format to a lot of spanish speaking events like mc extremo and such. a lot of these players are also not particularly interested in rp-ing and had not been logging on very often prior to purgatory.
even roleplay regulars like tubbo, fit and bbh have shown interest in purgatory for the competitive nature of the setting!!! thats cool too!!!! something different, new possibilities to play around with. thats what the events should be about. kudos to the admins and dev teams for attempting it in such a big scale. their effort shows and all the mechanics weve seen are really fucking cool
i love the roleplay!!!!!! its one of my favorite parts of the qsmp!!!!!! but its not ALL there is and it shouldnt be! non rp-oriented creators are also part of the project and deserve to have a little fun too -- not to mention a big chunk of the hispanic fan community that has blown up twitter with support bc what we have rn is similar to events they already love!!!!!!! im glad to see so many of them get excited again!!!!!!
at the end of the day, qsmp is a LONG long term project, and purgatory ends in two weeks. by the time its over, we can all choose to engage with it as we wish. it can be a big filler episode in your mind, if you want. it can be just for fun..... otherwise, if its not fun, your regularly scheduled qsmp will be back soon anyway :3 its fine to not like it, its fine to have something negative to say about it if properly tagged and not like. crazy entitled or blown out of proportion for what this situation is.
i just hope we can all manage our online experiences accordingly and avoid making things less enjoyable for each other. this is supposed to be fun
#rant kind of#i hate hate hate doomposting it drains me#lets not assume the worst!!!!!! lets wait and see!!!!!!! theres so much time!!!!!!! how about that#qsmp#discourse

i personally think tfw all have their hang ups with parenting but castiel did accidentally teach jack to keep secrets from people in order to avoid burdening them and also was like "idk maybe dean will forgive you one day who knows!". like if castiel tries his best and that's important than dean is also trying his best and that should be treated with equal importance when judging dean's parenting.
obviously none of this actually matters i just wanted to point out the things that i see people criticize about castiel's parenting style with jack specifically. because i just think him putting the burden of the empty deal on jack was... unwise. i LOVE cas tho
they’re all deeply under qualified to raise a child well and they’re also all in circumstances that don’t exactly lend them to regular or functional run of the mill gentle parenting. sam sucks at it period point the end no further commentary argue with the wall
but! i think what you’re saying is really interesting and generally correct. and look ill reblog deangirl posts and casgirl posts which are frequently conflicting and j believe things in between or close to both of them but don’t bother writing out my own opinions as meta a lot of the time because i don’t want to do the digging and the receipts a lot of the time. but yeah cas’ whole existence has revolved around pleasing the winchesters and pleasing the angels, trying to be forgiven and/or not disappoint one party or the other since the start of things. its pretty expected that parents pass down their worldview or perceptions of things to their children, consciously or subconsciously it happens. and i haven’t rewatched jack seasons recently enough to really contribute more than that. and i don’t think it’s solely dean’s fault that cas developed this immense need to make it up to others, or that it gets passed on to jack as well. i think what’s the most important to me is that jack is castiel’s kid and for much of the time is an extension of dean’s grief in various different ways. just because dean and sam had hands in raising him does not immediately make them his parents. are they later on? that’s a real discussion, but jack’s parent is castiel. even when parenting responsibilities fall on others
#i’m literally in the middle of doing a homework assignment and answered this off the top of my head#if you read this and think i’m wrong that’s fine because i’ll probably read this later and also think im wrong for various reasons#but shrug emoji

bloodwritten silver fic - Midpoint Meta (Chapter 5)
Chapter 5 is out, so it's time for another meta post!
--------
Other meta posts for this AU
Fic beginning meta
Fic end meta
--------
General thoughts and fic notes
-
Venshire
Venshire was named after Venice. Venice is huge in Valorant lore and on top of that, the Range is on Venice, and since Reyna treats the entire guild in Venshire a bit like a constant training session, I wanted to play with that idea. “Shire” just seemed to fit the mood and time period of the fic, so I landed on Venshire as a final name.
As I’ve mentioned before, I picture Venshire as something similar to Resident Evil Village or a Soulsborne kind of vibe. RE8 especially looks very similar to what I picture for this AU, particularly since there’s even a manor in Venshire’s valley (albeit it’s largely abandoned now the werewolf coven is dead).
-
Hazal
I’ve done some reference work for Fade here. Her outfit design is discussed later on in the “clothing” section of these notes, but I’ll show some her body references here. For the final meta post when the fic is completed, maybe I'll draw references for both Fade and Neon's outfits, but for now we've just got a body au and some discussion!
Werewolves in this AU are huge wolves which mostly resemble real-world wolves in terms of general anatomy, but their hips and hind legs are designed in a way which legs them stand up. Their forelimbs are also much closer to human arms than wolf forelegs, with lower elbows and fingered hand-paws. I drew these out in my initial pen sketches of this au (which can be found here) but I wanted to show them off in a proper reference.
I like the idea that werewolves have unique markings (similar to birthmarks) - Fade’s nose bridge marking and her “eyeshadow” are one of those, which is why they’re both permanent and visible on both her human and wolf body. That said, the cat paw marking in her canon design is actually a set of four large claw marks running across her shoulder, which we will learn the history of later in the fic. (This detail was inspired by a friend of mine, @/unidooty on Twitter! They helped inspire a bunch of Fade’s look in this fic, which I expand on in the clothing section of these notes.)
Her henna and criss-cross gloves in canon are actually her scars from the trap in chapter 1 of this fic. They will never go away since they were made with silver. This wound will also, unfortunately, cause her chronic pain for the rest of her life.
I have a chronic pain illness which I deal with, which is the inspiration behind a specific AU which I plan on writing in the future, but I do like the headcanon of Fade experiencing chronic pain. Her fatigue, insomnia, and general apparent high pain tolerance all seem like they suit someone who would deal with something like this, and so I find it a comforting headcanon which means a lot to me, and I will include it in my AUs where I can.
(Another character I enjoy in media to have a chronic pain headcanon is Kai’sa from League of Legends. I have a very long fic featuring her, my mozzfic, but chronic pain wasn’t mentioned there. I’d love to write a fic about her someday which does go over this, and in fact I do have a little story idea in mind for her.)
-
Clothing
The valley around Venshire is bitterly cold, especially in winter, when this fic is set. As such, most people wear very thick, layered clothing, often with lots of fur. The best comparison I can give is these sorts of outfits from Game of Thrones.
Hazal is an outlier specifically. She’s a werewolf, and they kind of come with a bit of their own heat source, so they can get away with lighter clothing. Her normal outfits will include a thick fur coat, mostly as a disguise but also a little bit as a shelter from the cold, and beneath that she’ll usually wear thinner blouses and baggy trousers. Uni, my friend I mentioned earlier, suggested Ottoman-styled outfits for her beneath her cloak, which I agree she would like in this AU! When she’s transforming, most of her regular-use clothes are enchanted to shift with her and disappear until she returns to her human body, but when she doesn’t have any enchanted clothing on hand (as her supply is limited), she’ll stick to a very large pair of pants which she’ll leave unbuckled and then belt tightly around her waist when she’s in her human form - this is because her wolf form is so much larger than her human body, and so she’s doing her best to make do with a huge clothes size difference. This method leaves her titties out when she isn’t wearing her enchanted clothes, but it’s better than nothing. This was another suggestion from Uni - their help has really helped me solidify exactly what Fade has going on appearance-wise and I appreciate their help a ton!
The beast hunter guild, on the other hand, has a uniform similar to the Bloodborne hunter’s outfit, but with a thick fur cloak over the top to protect them against the vicious cold. Tala and co wear this while on hunts, but when they’re simply training or patrolling, they’ll often wear much simpler clothing. Hazal didn’t see Tala in this outfit until chapter 5, and it’s why she suddenly found it so attractive.
--------
Playlist (expanded)
These are songs which I added to the playlist after I started writing, but I still think they fit.
Exit Music (For A Film) - Radiohead
Climbing Up the Walls - Radiohead
Street Spirit (Fade Out) - Radiohead
Sound the Bugle - Bryan Adams (Spirit soundtrack)
A Forest - The Cure
Soldier Side - System of a Down
The Wolf - SIAMES
Mr. Fear - SIAMES
Boulevard of Broken Dreams - Green Day
Wake Me Up When September Ends- Green Day
labour - Paris Paloma
Hayloft II - Mother Mother
Paint It, Black - The Rolling Stones
God’s Whisper - Raury
Repeat Until Death - Novo Armor
From Eden - Hozier
Yeah, quite a few of these are Radiohead. Their music really does fit Fade extremely well. These particularly, along with the other new songs listed here, fit this AU very well in my mind. It has a lot of themes of grief, existentialism and general… unhealthy coping mechanisms and responses to grief, on everyone’s parts.

🌃 intro post! 🌃
(bit late but i didn’t want a cluttered bio anymore so here’s this)
hiii im shay! i fixated on mash back in november and i officially finished it on march 22nd 2023!! im gonna rewatch soon tho
about this blog
this is a side-blog!
tags: i tag pretty extensively for the sake of categorization; here’s hoping my character tags prove fun to scroll through!
queue: as of the day i’m writing this, i have a very full queue, because i have a habit of liking literally every post i see related to a fixation, and then spam-queuing it later to clean my likes out. so i hope you enjoy all the content! lots of funny scenes and textposts, well-made gifsets, wonderful fanart, and insightful meta, if i do say so myself. mashblr is a talented bunch!
original posts/content: i don’t contribute much on my own, but i love to ramble and i hope some of my lengthy tags prove an interesting or at least entertaining read :) i do dabble in fanfic writing and i’ve got a few mash works in my drafts, but i’m not sure if they’ll ever see the light of day. i’m also fond of meta and character analysis, so if i ever work up the courage maybe ill put out some moderately thought-provoking posts in that realm.
some of my opinions relating to mash characters & ships can be found under the read more!
these are all subjective and i completely respect anyone who disagrees :) we’re all here to have fun!
summarized thoughts on the characters (kinda sorted by fav to least fav)
mulcahy has been driving me bonkers for months (and my jewish ass has been putting far too much thought into catholicism lately bc of him😒)
frank,,,, listen. i’m sorry. but listen, as baffled and/or disgusted as you are, i’m the mf stuck being the only one in this entire fandom who flails over frank burns. so how do you think i feel. ik he’s absolutely awful, but he’s just so damn pathetic, i can’t help but like him and find him fascinating
radar is a bubby to me, i dont rlly have complex thoughts on him hes kinda just a comfort character to me n ilhsm
charles... he snuck up on me. i didnt expect to like him, much less relate to him (-_-) i just exposed myself as a charles winchester kinnie how will my reputation recover
i love hawkeye a lot, as we all do <3
i love trapper john mcintyre!!!!!!!!!!
i love margaret!!! i love klinger!!! i love henry!!!
im pretty neutral on potter and bj
in short: i love them all a lot but mulcahy and frank have each driven me particularly mad in different ways and radar with his animals has made me cry and charles would probably drive me nuts if i let him but i am keeping him at arm’s length.
summarized thoughts on ships (again, strongest first)
(yes i have frank ships. no i am not proud of it)
my mash otp is hawkahy. it’s been slowly draining the remainder of my sanity. i havent slept in months. send help
i am a sucker for enemies/rivals to lovers and hawnk kinda makes me a little nuts.
i know he’s not good for her but i think margaret x frank have a rlly interesting relationship and they can be cute sometimes, and i think about them more than i’d like to admit. i am not immune to het ships consisting of badass women with control issues and their toxic pathetic purse-dog boyfriends.
henry x klinger is literally canon idc
pierceintyre... ;-; hh
i love semi-niche trapper ships. trapcahy is a little bit 👀 and i really like trapper x margaret
hawkeye x henry... shh...
bonus trios i think about sometimes😳: hawkeye x margaret x frank, margaret x frank x flagg (SHH), hawkeye x trapper x mulcahy. do u see my evil vision
aaand some platonic dynamics i particularly enjoy
mulcahy & klinger are besties :)
mulcahy & margaret have a sibling dynamic that i absolutely adore, esp in the potter seasons, particularly the later ones.
charles & margaret are a fun duo. the ship tease they did a little was... idk how to feel about it, but i like them as buddies.
margaret & klinger... the girlies
hawkeye & klinger!!! the el jibbities are flocking together..
hawkeye & margaret :)
i do very much enjoy hawkeye & bj’s friendship
not friendship but charles & mulcahy’s animosity is sooo funny i will never tire of it
notps: klinger x charles, and hunnihawk. do not doxx me.
i think thats all for now. enjoy my nonsense!

so, im still largely unable to write imogen meta about the last episode. mostly because i start thinking about Imogen, slightly ticked off about her role, Imogen with a nightmare of a headache trying desperately to keep her shit together in a sea of minds, Imogen freaking the fuck out as plans go sideways and she cant be the one to just yank it back on track, Imogen, overwhelmed and panicked and maybe a little angry, still pulling an ace performance when it's needed-
Imogen, still holding it together with sheer willpower and an edge of desperation, still laser focused on the goal, still ready to lie and charm on a moments notice-
and knowing that, for once, that wouldn't be enough.
That she can't grab the entire operation with both hands and wrangle it under control- can't overwhelm it with her mind or her powers, can't deliver a performance or a lie so stunning that it sweeps away their issue and leaves them home free.
Like once I start thinking I keep thinking about how that whole situation probably was (and continues to be) a Very Unpleasant Time for Imogen, but she can power through that. I think she could, and do it very, very effectively. So maybe the worst part is that she can, that she has- and she'd still need to bank on everyone else at the end of it.
I don't think she's unfamiliar with having a bad time or a plan gone sideways, but I doubt she's enjoying not having the power to just fix it.
#this was gonna be a post about how i couldnt write the meta and it kind of turned into meta. funny how that goes.#critical role#cr spoilers#c3e13#imogen temult#character meta#my meta#speculation#hmm#HMMMMM#maybe ill publish a more polished version of these thoughts later. if i can get something better out ofnit#imogen meta

man someday i’ll make a whole big post about The Tailgate And Getaway Thing. someday. someday. But for now i will just sit here and keep all my words to myself forever. And then die someday
#may have had slightly too much of the edibles last night.#i love THINKING about posting meta and then not doing it because im so skittish and if someone tries to argue with me well ill just die.#and also i dont want to make people go like oh if you like getaway you’re PROBLEMATIC#because like. He’s one of the best written characters in the thing!!#i like him on the strength of his writing alone!!! he’s funny and charismatic and entertaining even after he goes mask off#i just get increasingly baffled seeing how people treat him and like glossing over the emotional abuse thing#i think people forgot like. how unsettlingly realistic that bit is because immediately afterwards he does like 6 cartoon supervillain things#in quick succession so it kind of gets overshadowed#but well. maybe its because im insane but I care . about the setup#I care about how he basically jumps off the deep end immediately and i think thats important to analyze.#because it did have a long lasting effect on tailgate he didnt just like shake off getting gaslit for a year#i care. Because i am insane#*ends up just writing the meta in the tags but worse* failed step one#op#probably delete later.

Sometimes the lyrics of Hero get to me, you know? Like I understand it’s an Ironwood song but it sounds so...personal? Like it’s made for someone or multiple someones that aren’t just, like, the entirety of Atlas’s population as I intitally assumed. I honestly imagined his song would be more cold and militant but the lyrics, now when I read and hear them after the finale, foreshadow a loooot of things and are really, really personal.
Not to “accidentally” produce a meta on main, but this is some real foreshadowing here. Yeah, cruel and heartless, you shot Oscar! And I totally feel like the oath functions as more than one promise, but that it includes the one he made to the people, and this is all really a desperate bid to keep them safe. But... “just hold on?” Why, when you willingly sacrificed Mantle? They can’t hold on! And why “you?” There’s yous everywhere in this song! Who is the you? Is there no you and it’s just like, in general? What gets to me also is the Hope aspect. If Ironwood really believed hope wasn’t gone, why didn’t he listen to team RWBY?! Is this all a fake out for his later not-so-surprising betrayal? Or is it foreshadowing his future arc, and how he’ll actually abide by and weaponize his personal feelings emotional side in order to strike back at Salem and her team? Because as I’ve stated before, Ironwood is a big picture man and this song seems decidedly not big picture.
Oops I meant this as a shit post
Starting out with the iconic opening—I would DIIIIEEE shows Ironwood is totally self sacrificial. A bit of an ass, sure, but an ass who would sacrifice himself for you. Specifically you, maybe. And here’s where this captured me upon a second read through:
Flying into the sun? Wow, funny how Atlas was mentioned as being this crazy city that could be taken as high as possible multiple instances and how Ironwood’s final plan was to yeet it so high Salem couldn’t reach it. The sun? I don’t like this! Is this just figurative? Or is Ironwood really going to launch Atlas towards a great ball of gas burning billions of miles away? I say both!! All because it “keeps our dream alive.”
I have a feeling these oath and dream references are about Ozpin. Maybe this whole song is. And what also gets to me about this part is “the fear will surely fade.” Because oh boy, is Ironwood scared. And saying it will fade insinuates that Ironwood’s fear will eventually fade. Or fear in general, as a theme. “Surely” could be, like, him saying it with certainty only later to realize heck no fear is here to stay. And then there’s this “shelter in my arms” casual mention. I hope not those stubby V4 arms. Does he want to literally hold someone?! Side eyes only a bit reluctantly towards ironqrow. Or is this a reference to the Atlas from mythology, holding up the world, which Atlas the city gets its namesake from, and how that connects to Ironwood’s characterization and the future of his story?
But that’s not all! “We’ll survive this storm”, he says. A figurative storm? What storm? Oh, yeah! This storm:
There was lightning and everything too! Now, obviously surviving a storm could be not literal. It could be a situational storm. But then we get this actual storm at the end complete with a whale and, coupled with the idea that some of the older songs from other Volumes are prescient of current events, I feel like this is a nod to future arcs.
I’m inhaling right now, a deep breath, because this whole meta is probably just me over analyzing a cool, awesome song that wasn’t meant to be taken so seriously. But this whole season—the next two seasons, really, and likely the rest of the show, seem way more planned out and interconnected than previous ones when it comes to small details. So I just—I can’t help but feel like this song is saying more than we know and can really put together right now. Then again, War the song is like, very angsty and I would almost say unessecarily angry (“knife to my heart?” “With a smile and a cheerful heart I’ll turn to you and wave goodbye?” Get rekt, Ace Ops!!) but it’s lyrics are in line with the action. Who knows if we’ll get a Hero reprise but I want one to address all these lyrical odd and ends. Instead of Hero though it could be Enemy?? Depends on where Ironwood ends up! And who, pray tell, ends up taking his hand and shelters in his busted ass arms!
#rwby#this is still a partial shit post but also slightly serious#maybe ill do a longer actual analysis later?#james ironwood#jeez i did not expect to write pages on this man#rwby meta#rwby 7

I’m done keeping my composure.
Sorry, this will be a LOADED post! (And I’ll be repeating the points others have made)
for real, to everyone being nasty and telling heartbroken fans that “Dean was always supposed to die get a grip you’re just butthurt etcetera etcetera—” F you royally.
How dare you police the brutal feelings that’s been embroiling us since the Finale That Must Not Be Named aired.
The show you think you all watched, the show you all believe was the same SPN from Season 1-4, changed at some point. Kripke wrote his original vision, put it to screen, saw it through in S5 as he intended, and closed the door on that era.
In 2008, Supernatural was adopted and inherited. As you know, there was a supreme paradigm shift post-Kripke era. The show FLOURISHED (we won’t talk about Gamble thanks). It evolved, transformed, grew beyond trauma-induced self-worthlessness and toxic masculinity and endless death and hegemonic social ideals and conservatism and repressive anti-revolutionary ideas. Castiel, the iconic favourite and beloved staple of the series portrayed by Misha Collins, was introduced in Season 4 as the core lead character, and he ushered in a brand new era of Christian mythos that SPN took advantage of. Longevity SKYROCKETED. Audiences were INTERESTED. SPN amassed an incredibly groundbreaking fanbase infused by non-nuclear principles. A massive subversive wave began, fighting the Status Quo of the times since 2008. It’s precisely why such an abysmal ending to a show of extensive Freud-Jungian metanarratively meta META complex stature and social POWER will render us totally and unbearably broken for years to come.
Point is, DEAN WINCHESTER NO LONGER WANTED TO DIE. HE WANTED TO LIVE. HE WANTED TO SIT ON THE BEACH, PLUNGE HIS TOES IN THE SAND, AND SIP UMBRELLA DRINKS WITH HIS BROTHER AND HIS BEST FRIEND. He said this in Season 13. And then, a season later, he told the ghost of his long-deceased father — the source of his deep-running trauma and the figure of self-reductive authoritarianism permeating his arc since Season 1 — after being questioned why he didn’t pursue the Nuclear Fam, that he already has his own: his brother Sam, his adopted child Jack, and Cas.
Dean’s best friend Cas. Oh god, Cas, who made his inevitably permanent mark on Dean’s soul beyond allyship. Castiel, renamed to Cas, God’s -iel removed by Dean. Dean, the human spark that lit the fire of pre-existing autonomy in the inherently rebellious angel who was, this entire time, the catalyst for free will in God The Writer’s puppet show. Their friendship set on goddamn fire. I can also write paragraph upon paragraph about my love for Cas while devastated tears stream down my face, but I digress—
Cas’ romantic love for Dean pushed our main Heart of SPN to love himself. Love is free will. Free will is also love. Of note, Cas’ love confession in 15x18 was supposed to offset something so vastly important and fundamental...to maybe (read: most likely) pull the trigger on SELF-TRUTHS in conjunction with free will. And The Great Anticipated Follow-Up to the episode penned by the passionate Berens should have included (read: seemed like it was going to be) Dean, closeted trauma survivor in love with his best friend, being given the opportunity to do it right: to SPEAK HIS TRUTH, and then that very singular opportunity was STOLEN so grossly. After poring over it for days, I refuse to believe we made their years-long story up out of thin air, spun it out of fantastical-delusional dream cotton candy, because we DIDN’T. IT WAS REAL.
As I said in another post: “I’ve just been feeling physically ill for the past >40 something hours with the terrible knowledge that 19/20 undid years of vital progression towards healthy interdependence, autonomy, and a positive endgame, where Sam, Dean and Cas close the ring of found family in final empowering self-fulfillment...where Dean, no longer repressed and set free, is able to use his words and speak his truth as a queercoded trauma survivor, henceforth confirming and self-affirming his own bisexuality since S1 by reciprocating — by telling Cas that he always loved him, too, loved him endlessly, which would have altogether divested Supernatural of its cult status and catapulted it into global worldwide significance as the longest running sci-fi genre show in American broadcasting history that actually dared to defy and, by proxy, empower LGBTQ2IA+ everywhere who found profound personal meaning in Destiel through VALIDATION,” — found themselves mirrored in Dean and Cas’ respective character journeys individually and as each other’s queer love interests.
THIS IS WHY DEAN WASN’T MEANT TO DIE.
THEY WERE SO ESSENTIAL, NOT JUST TO THE OVERARCHING STORY AND HEALTHY INTERPERSONAL THEMATICS OF MODERN SPN, BUT ALSO TO THE SOULS OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE ACROSS THE WORLD WHO FOLLOWED THEIR JOURNEYS, HOPED FOR THEM, ASPIRED TO BE LIKE THEM, TREASURED THEM, WEEPED FOR THEM, AND FOUGHT FOR THEM, LIKE YOU AND ME.
Heck, how could anyone think Sam Winchester had a well-deserved characteristic ending? He didn’t. Dean’s brother was shafted so badly. He stopped hunting when seasons ago, he had canonically accepted that he no longer wanted an apple pie life. He simply...turned the lights off in a resoundingly empty bunker and left — abandoning his dead brother’s room — never to return (he did return later to get the Impala, family photos etc, I mean this symbolically)...as if — dare I say it — Supernatural itself eerily told us, in the negative-spaced pitch blackness, that the organic show and the wonderfully complex, matured characters we’ve grown to love weren’t going to survive or be revisited...that it was all going to perish, and that they no longer gave a single shit about their own show, which, to me, is the worst cardinal sin, because how dare they throw Team Free Will, an immovable and indomitable and passionate found family they built from the ground up, a found family CHOCK FULL TO THE BRIM OF LOVE AND LIFE RAGING AGAINST THE AUTHORITARIAN MACHINE IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE FREE WILL, under the bus no matter who is to blame. Growth was stomped on.
Then Sam married a faceless wife who wasn’t his textually established (and deaf) love interest Eileen, named his son Dean Jr., and grew old miserably, still mourning the passing of his older brother, shaken and sombre. Back to square one. IT WAS ALL ANTITHETICAL, even OUTSIDE a shipping context, and I ripped my hair out at this point in sheer disbelief.
This 15x20 ending would have fit somewhere between S4-7. Now? IT DOESN’T FIT. IT’S A JAGGED PUZZLE PIECE THAT DOESN’T BELONG ANYWHERE. IT’S THE FOREBODING UNKNOWN STRANGER IN ITS OWN LAND, BOTH LITERALLY AND FIGURATIVELY. This kind of ending was basically an illogical, unsound cluster of metastasized cells that, to me, ruined the viability of previous seasons to sustain bold praise and respect and dignity and rewatches and classic nostalgia in such insidious ways.
Dean Humanity Winchester and Cas, after everything they’ve been through, were silenced and lost in death, ripped apart from each other, unable to love each other the way they deserved, because of disappointing, vile incompetency and homophobia. The greatest love story ever told, again obliterated in less than 60 hollow minutes.
You know what this tells your audience, CW SPN? Death without self-growth is the way to go, and no one is allowed to forge their own path to freedom.
HOW INSULTINGLY HARMFUL IS THAT?
I don’t think I’ll ever stop grieving.
We all deserve answers.
#fuck#my stuff#spn s15#15x20#sorry this was so long winded but i’m so#I think I finally wrote out all my frustration in this???#i’m still broken but I do hope it gets better#ily all#my meta#fuck cw#fuck spn#deancas#destiel#excuse me for any sloppy grammar and weirdness and shit#I’m still emotionally wilding lol#the greatest love story ever told#narrative#character development#narrative cyclism#supernatural#destiel deserved better#jensen and misha deserved better#at the same time this all seems cathartic anyway :P#I sorta snapped because wtf WE AREN’T WATCHING THE SAME SHOW IF YOU BELIEVE DEATH IS THE ANSWER 😭#I respect your opinion only if you’re respectful towards ours#but I’ve literally seen so many nasties out there#I’d rather have queue#long post for ts#I’M TEARING UP AGAIN#I’m ill

Hey my fave author! I've no idea if I can make a request of any sort... If not for a fic, id want to hear your thoughts on that meta Ash having HIV. (Sorry I lost the link, would be grateful to any clues) It could not be diagnosed in a manga timeline, though Ash could be smart enough to figure something is not right.
But I keep imagining (no matter the timeline) Ash carrying this horrifying thing and possibly infecting Eiji on accident. Eiji would never ever blame him, right? If I may have a request of your beautiful writing, may you write Ash confessing he may have infect Eiji, and Eiji staying on his side?
Anyone can feel free to add on to this with info about the headcanon of Ash having HIV/AIDS if they'd like, or if anyone can find the meta post that anon is talking about, please feel free to add that as well.
In the manga version of the scene in the prison infirmary, where the doctor gives Ash an antibiotic shot, in the manga version the doctor comments that he can't do anything if Ash has been infected in HIV. Keep in mind that the manga takes place in 1985, which is in the middle of the AIDS crisis and before HIV testing was standardized. (The first commercial HIV antibody test, ELISA, was developed actually IN early 1985, but was horribly inaccurate and was mainly used to test the United States blood supply rather than individuals. Better testing wasn't developed until 1987, which would have been around the time of Ash's death in the manga timeline. For those who want to learn more, check hiv.gov and other sources!)
Anyway, yeah. We're talking 1985, the middle of the AIDS crisis, in New York City, one of the main hotspots. Most (notably not all) of Ash's abusers were men. HIV/AIDS also usually doesn't show symptoms until about a year after you contract it, so if Ash was infected in the prison or earlier, it might make sense for him to not start showing symptoms until later in the series. And if we cut to about a year later on the timeline?
When they're living in the apartment together and Ash has trouble waking up, Eiji makes a joke about him having low blood pressure. There are times when Ash's memory fails him, despite him obviously being extremely intelligent and having a brilliant "book smart" memory normally. For example, he forgets that he ate some of his own salad earlier, before he fell back asleep. That could just be due to how tired he was, but there's also the time when he panics about Eiji leaving the apartment ... despite the fact that he asked Eiji to come meet him there at that time.
And, perhaps most tellingly, Ash has trouble gaining weight throughout the entire series, commenting at one point that he grew two inches but hadn't gained a pound. He stop seating entirely when he's under Dino's custody, and says at multiple points that he's not doing it intentionally. He starts eating again once he's back with Eiji, but it would make sense for the stress of being with Dino to exasperate his symptoms. He also has trouble walking or even standing, which could be from the lack of nutrition, or could also be related to HIV symptoms. Now, Ash is also diagnosed with "acute" (meaning temporary, but I disagree) anorexia during the time he spends back in Dino's custody, but comorbidity (the existence of multiple illnesses/disorders that play into each other) is a thing too.
Also, like ... Ash is smart. If he had it, he probably knew, or at least had his suspicions. It carried such a heavy stigma at the time, and Ash is fairly private with all aspects of his personal life to everyone. So it would make sense for him to never tell anyone or mention it, and it might even make sense for him to choose his death on his own terms instead of waiting around for the illness to kill him.
Fic maybe incoming in the next couple days; hope this bit of analysis works for now!

every time i rewatch the reboot and i get to the Kana ep
I go "I need to write down my Kana Thoughts for posting" for the posterity of me and then it doesn't happen.
IDK which number try I am on but maybe it is a charm!!!
–
I feel like, way back in the day, I was not alone in being in Ayame's camp about Kana. Like, good for her or whatever, but a bit rude to go off and have a happy, healthy marriage with some far-removed-from-the-Souma man. A bit rude to let your guilt eat you alive and then recover once Hatori is no longer in your life, and walk off and leave him to stick it out alone with all the memories and the sadness.
(And then Mayuko appeared on the horizon and I stopped caring very much about the tragedy of Kana and Hatori, both of them are clearly destined to live their best lives with other people good for both of them!!!)
Anyway I feel like there were some fundamental assumptions I had going there that were not quite on point, and I have at length since reexamined things and found more complicated nuance and every time I watch the dub reboot I start to consider yet more nuances. And writing them down means I stop composing the same mental posts of meta all the time, so that frees up a little brain space, and also future!me will have things to read to be like "wow past!me so smart" or "wow past!me missed that point so hard."
1) Mental illness hard
I think I was just not tired enough back in the day, and had less life experience. I believe I was either all on board for "Kana destroys any further support she could have provided for Hatori by being consumed with guilt over the fact that she did protect Hatori from injury, for the TRAGEDY", or else it was "Kana should realize that this is counterproductive, focus on what she can do and better to have loved and lost, and recover."
This is Fruits Basket. It isn't dramatic for the sake of cheap drama, it is dramatic because it's genuine and feelings that seem stupid and nonsensical are in fact sharply distressing and overwhelming and can drown you. Therefore, I have to take it in good faith that if Kana simply cannot recover while she's with Hatori, if Kana's depression and trauma are crushing her, then that is in fact literally the case. Whether Kana was already struggling with things, or whether this whole incident was on its own too much, it's still valid.
If Kana can't cope, then Kana would never have been able to cope no matter how much she could have "tried harder."
It's not her fault. And like everyone, Kana deserves to be able to live and thrive in an environment where she is not constantly distressed, constantly feeling guilty/being made to feel guilty over things that are outside of her control, constantly unable to get away from things that trigger obsessive thought spirals, constantly not getting the support she needs in order to be able to take care of herself, let alone Hatori.
Remember: the number 1 rule of helping people is to absolutely not let them drown you. Sometimes you gotta leave them and come back later when you can get a flotation device or something, even if it looks almost identical to leaving them to drown. Choosing to prioritize yourself by swimming away to get the help you need is not the same thing as having a huge and ridiculously empty lifeboat(s) but refusing to let anyone else in it (the latter being capitalist hellscape: a metaphor). It sucks but it's true.
(And Hatori is first in line in the "I don't blame Kana for needing this and for putting her own health and well-being first" camp.)
2) Kana: "Zero regrets." Akito: *injures Hatori's eye* Kana: "1 regret."
I believe Tokyopop's line was "It would have been better if we had never met." The typical implication inferred from that being, I believe, "I regret that I met you."
Went and grabbed the volume now to look at the themes….early in the relationship Kana talks about how Hatori must have been scared, of course he'd distance himself from someone he loved, but there's no need to be scared, don't push me away, I'm happy I met you, I want to be near you. So it's very much feels like an about-face when it ends with Kana saying "I think it would have been better if we had never met," even with things like "I'm sorry I couldn't protect you" sprinkled in.
The reboot dub has different nuances to me. I believe the line is more like "This wouldn't have happened if we had never met." The typical implication inferred from that being, I believe, "I regret that you got hurt because we were together."
And I think that distinction is very important for not feeling betrayed by Kana leaving and moving on, for not feeling that Kana didn't put much effort in really. "I'd never regret meeting you" to "I definitely regret meeting you" is a bad look here. "I'd never regret our relationship" to "I regret that our relationship hurt you" is a very different flavor. And the latter is certainly implied in the manga too it's just that the lines, without context, tend to have harsher default implications.
I also feel like "I want to be near you" is half an argument, arguing back against the idea that Kana does not in fact want this. Yes it references back to Hatori keeping his distance because he's afraid of the curse being discovered, but I feel like the emphasis on want has me always read it as Kana repudiating an off-screen earlier comment by Hatori that of course no one wants to be near him he is cursed and a monster and turns into a seahorse. The answer to that being, too bad you're not actually unlovable I actually do want to be near you.
I believe the reboot dub line was, simply, "I want to be with you" or something like that, with no particular emphasis on want. So the import of the sentence to me falls on To Be With You. Look I'll flesh out better what I'm trying to get at here in the next section, eventually:
3) Y'all I'm not sure Kana was actually let go from her job???
I have, in the past, been guilty of thinking that Kana ought to stick things out the way Hatori clearly stuck things out.
I have, in more recent years, realized that this is probably not a sticking-it-out kind of situation.
I mean, let's say section 1 was not an issue. AU where Kana magically gets cured of her depression after waiting it out long enough, somehow, even though that makes no sense because environmental factors are still at play. Actually that's what this section is about. Environment.
Let's have an analogy. A hypothetical you has a house plant that has thrived for a good long time, seemingly with no special effort, and you put it in a pitch black room, and it struggles for a while and dies. What the hell, the analogy!you says, somehow not knowing why this happened and thus feeling very righteously indignant. This plant has always thrived so well before and now it just gave up and died on me for no reason at all??? Oh yeah it has "problems" well how can it have "problems" now when it's never had "problems" before??? The thing this analogy!you has failed to understand is that plants need sun to grow (also needing sun to grow is not a "problem" it is not a "design flaw" and it is certainly not a sudden new occurrence), you deliberately placed the plant in an environment where you deprived it of sun, and then you blamed it for dying when you were the one who refused to give it the sun you had always given it before that had allowed it to thrive.
(This is also an analogy about ableism, if you were wondering about the sudden fervent passion there. An analogy about internalized ableism and support and capitalist hellscapes. I am, in fact, bitter. Thank you for noticing :)
Actually before I get to my point I want to collect together a sketch of Hatori and Kana's relationship based on the very blurry reference image that is canon, because otherwise I don't remember these things and can't keep them in place long enough to connect any dots:
Hatori and Kana's entire relationship is the span of about 1 year. Per the collector's timeline they meet in "winter," and ask to get married the following "fall-winter", and Kana leaves the Souma later that same winter.
They are probably just out of college, Hatori should be like 22-23 which I can assure you, from 30+ years, means they are babies. Looking back at my own life experience I can tell you in hindsight that it is definitely true that your brain does not finish developing until closer to 25 and sure "puberty" kind of peters out by the end of high school but from about 17 to 25 was an absolutely horrific brain puberty of idk mental illness??? It wasn't exactly the autism, that's always been steady, but the "anxiety disorder that picked up speed until I would have guaranteed multiple panic attacks a day every day with palpitations, vision blurring, extremities going numb, vertigo, disordered breathing, terror, and the absolute urgent conviction that I would throw up right there all over the customer's groceries and knowing I would get yelled at for running away and disappearing in the bathroom in the middle of an order since I never did in fact throw up so let's hope this time isn't the time it happens!, all while holding down a 40 hour constant-customer-service job" waxed to a terrible peak (let's see actually when we got the car I was 22 and I remember it was bad but hadn't fully crested yet at that time) and waned in that time and has since stopped existing somewhere past about 25. I can still technically have panic attacks but no longer have a separate panic disorder, and the fact that it was temporary plus the timing makes me think it was the brain equivalent of your knees hurting because you got tall. The point being, Hatori and Kana are old enough that people go "ah yes they are adults" but they are actually they are children whose prefrontal cortexes or whatever are still disasters. The point being Kana is a precious early-20s baby whose brain and body betrayed her horribly.
Hatori hasn't had an assistant in the years since, so I'm not sure if he asked for an assistant and was given Kana (and after was like "welp never doing that again, I can manage on my own somehow"), or if someone in Kana's immediately family was like "the job market is hard, please nepotism" and convinced Akito to magnanimously bestow the position upon Kana even though it wasn't necessary. That's probably not relevant. What is relevant is that after a certain point Kana starts laying out Hatori's clothes for him to wear in the morning because Hatori, a man after my own heart, hates making outfits to get dressed in the morning and thinks a suit is an all-purpose adult uniform so as to make the process easier and even then would rather someone just picked out his clothes for him. This means that they are either having "sleepovers" on the regular or Kana has fully moved into Hatori's place.
I think I started questioning whether Kana got fired from her job or not upon Akito vetoing the engagement because the reboot places her in Hatori's office for the line about no matter what Hatori said or did Kana did nothing but cry. Why that specific setting, rather than, say, the atmospherically dark and barren room that Mayu later visits Kana in? Is it because Hatori is a doctor and he is trying to treat Kana's illness? Is this simply before Kana stops being able to get out of bed? Did Akito say a huge fuck-you to Kana by informing her in no uncertain terms that Kana has no future with Hatori and must keep her hands off Hatori, but still must show up to work every day instead of being instantly banished? I assume Kana was originally "outside" family, but the room Mayuko visits Kana in seems to be "inside" still since Shigure had to sneak her in.
Which makes me suspect that Akito kept Kana close to really make a point before ultimately driving Kana away, instead of sending Kana away immediately.
Back to environment after that very long tangent. If this is the case, that's a really horrible bullshit situation. That is not a stick-it-out situation.
Every day, wake up in the room that was previously your room, instead of in your boyfriend's room which has been yours for many months. Have you had enough spoons to start moving your things back into your place? Existing is hard, now you are crying again. Get up and go to work, where it's just you and the man you love, the man you still love, the man you have been told in no uncertain terms that you have no future with. You will never get married. The head of the family will never sanction your marriage and the man you love will never marry you without that approval. The man you love will never leave this family. (Hatori has probably been honest and open about that, because it is True.) Feel guilty that you fucked up, that because you love this man and you want to be with him his eye is permanently injured and you both have to live with the knowledge that you can never be together. Feel guilty that you should have seen this coming (there was a reason you didn't openly admit you were in a relationship until you actually asked for permission to marry). Blame yourself, because who else is there to blame? It's not Hatori's fault, you know that, Hatori is the victim here. Hatori says he doesn't blame you, but Hatori also doesn't blame Akito, the person who is tormenting the two of you and who physically hurt Hatori. Hatori literally agrees that Akito is justified and that Hatori knew he was betraying Akito by being in a relationship with you. And Akito openly blames you at length. Based on all evidence you can see, based on the abusive environment you are in, it is clear to you that you are in fact to blame for everything that happened to the two of you. You thought you were making Hatori's life better, you thought the two of you would be happy, but that is clearly not the case and you certainly can't undo it all or make things better now.
There is no light at the end of this tunnel. Things will never get better with time. Akito's mind will not be changed. Hatori's mind will not be changed.
(That leaves Kana. She can either bend—change, accept the end of this relationship, leave—or she can break. She does both, but in reverse order.)
This is not like Yuki, sticking things out until he meets Tohru, until he meets Kakeru, and his world opens up and his mom relents on controlling his future. He had no guarantee the light was there, but he decided it might be and walked for long enough to find it.
This is like Kyouko, trying to stick it out to stay with Tohru but unable to overcome blunt force trauma and blood loss. This is like Kyou, who says the worst thing he can think of to prevent Tohru from confessing she loves him, because he knows they can never be happy together because he will be locked in a shed on the Souma property until he dies and Tohru will not be allowed to step foot on the estate. These are not situations you can wait out.
(This is also like Tohru, who does want Kyou to do what makes him happy because she loves him as a person, who knows she can be okay with Kyou loving someone else because she genuinely wants that for him. But not right now, right now she is not at all okay, right now she is recovering from a head injury and she's only a teenager and she hasn't processed and she can't just stop feeling her feelings no matter how much she tries to repress them and she can't cope and she cries every time she hears Kyou's name even though she knows this isn't the end of her life and her happiness. Being able to be okay in the future is not at all the same as being okay now.)
"I want to be with you," Kana said. But she can show up to Hatori's office every single day for the rest of her life and she will never, ever be with him. Being in the same room is not, in fact, the same thing as being with him.
I think the despair and depression eventually would have gotten to Hatori as well. I think it is a matter of Hatori simply being a different person, as well as having different life expectations. Kana has, presumably, always expected to marry a man she was wildly in love with and have a family. Hatori has, presumably, always been told that he will become a doctor, have a perfunctory marriage and a perfunctory child if Akito approves. (Hatori was the first one to tell Akito he was seeing someone, so until that incident they were all unaware that Akito was not actually going to let any Zodiacs marry anyone.)
For Hatori, falling in love with Kana was an unexpected surprise and Akito ripping them apart was a sudden-but-inevitable-betrayal and a return to the status quo. For Kana, falling in love with Hatori was exactly as expected and Akito ripping them apart came out of nowhere with no logic and was not something she would ever have predicted or been able to see coming.
So while it was still also traumatic for Hatori, I think it affected him differently. I think it was a thing he could more readily cope with, at the time. And once he made the decision to suppress Kana's memories, Hatori suddenly saw the light at the end of the tunnel. This was the only way out for both of them. His life would be the same as he'd always expected, and now Kana's life would be again, too. She wouldn't be heartsick anymore over her destroyed relationship with Hatori; at worst, she'd have the idea of an unreciprocated crush, a fantasy that never panned out (not a reality that turned out to be unsustainable), disappointing but still status quo. She would leave this godawful family and go out of town. She would have the opportunity to meet someone else under circumstances where she could be happy.
So even though it broke his heart to do it, I think Hatori didn't feel trapped as soon as suppressing Kana's memories became a real option. Life is so much easier to bear when you have the option of an escape route. No matter what the situation is, if you're trapped and you have no options it's absolutely intolerable and you're consumed with how horrible and intolerable it is and how much you want to get out but you can't get out and every day it's harder to breath and you can't look ahead at all because you have no hope of things ever changing. It's Kana getting set free that allows Hatori to cope with a future where he has no prospect of a happy marriage, that allows Hatori to cherish his memories of his relationship with Kana instead of being hurt by them.
I think if the possibility of Kana getting her memories suppressed and sent away had not been on the table, sooner or later Hatori would have fallen prey to his own despair-spiral.
Anyway...I can't remember if I had any more thoughts to elaborate on...this has been a very long post to say "it's important to remember that life sucks".

1 dere(k)volution
P: heres to the first of the second try at ramble posting on tumblr. instead of random rants, these posts will be centered around some kind of oc meta. also this time i have a co-host of sorts to keep it interesting because i am a dull turd.
D: It’s Derek.
P: cool. the topic for discussion today is the evolution of derek. but like the concept of derek. not this derek’s canon character development or whatever. to start by looking at the first ever image of derek that i scrolled through my camera for 10 minutes to find.
(from 2/2019)
if you didnt know already, his name was Dolan at first. the name Derek is fairly recent.
D: Dolan. What an ugly nerd name.
P: right. also. his design was based off a bottle of water i found at the grocery store. back then i had a weird tendency to draw very thin necks for some reason. along with very short torsos and long legs. so thats why the proportions look really weird.
D: That explains why you draw really thick necks now to compensate. Hahaha.
P: basically the beta concept for his story was that he lived in Hell and had an incredibly powerful wand that he inherited by accident after getting lost in the snowy woods or something. (Dolan) didnt really know what kind of responsibilities came with the wand and consistently wanted to become a magician (not fantasy kinda magic... like card tricks kind of magic) and misused the wand for trivial things such as taking a shortcut to the grocery store.
D: So I’ve been a amateur magician since birth!
P: yes. its incredible how youve stayed an amateur for this long. fun fact: harlow was also created at a similar time and was exes with one of luciano’s brothers. wow. the prosciuttoverse was a cesspool back then. a furry world PLUS heaven/hell setting? get outta here.
D: Harlow was also my love interest for quite some time!
(from 4/2019)
P: yeah. maybe we’ll do a commentary on harlow’s evolution at some point.
D: God I had such a weirdly-shaped head.
P: lets look at some other pics of dolan.
(renewed ref, from 5/2019)
(from 1/2020)
P: nothing more to note other than the fact that i remember writing a lot about you having a nice butt on your charahub/toyhouse profiles. despite the fact that your butt is pretty mundane in the evidence provided. god what the hell is that shading.
D: Ah I look so young and happy.
P: right i think dolan was meant to be in his early 20s. like literally every other oc i had at the time. next, the start of 2021 was when i revamped/redesigned dolan.
(from 2/2021 and 3/2021 respectively)
P: theres the first ever image of human derek and harlow. not much has changed tbh
D: We look like a lesbian couple.
P: the story concept was also pretty different from the original. basically i made a whole hierarchy for both heaven and hell and the world was completely extinct so everyone was either in heaven or hell. the world itself was the wence boys’ world. so the story wouldve taken place way way in the future. blah blah blah something about heaven being evil or corrupt or something corny like that, and dolan (being half devil/angel what a cliche) wanted to change The System (tm). also he was running a campaign 2 be ruler of hell or something as part of his plan. maybe he was evil maybe he wasnt idk. its old corny stuff.
D: Sounds like boring philosophical politics. Bluh bluh.
P: yeah. anyways timeskip to later in the year when i completely revamped your story AGAIN! ill try to limit the pictures from now on because im almost at the max 10.
(from 7/2021)
D: Look at me and my pronounce!
P: so at this point. there was a heaven/hell but it wasnt the main setting it just existed. there was an office kinda deal going on for the admin stuff. a dead persons soul could either be reincarnated in heaven/hell or destroyed iirc. there were 4 different departments because people die all the time so they categorized them. dolan had the biggest department because it was Death by natural causes/accidents. the 3 other were Pestilence (disease), War (conflict or generally murder), Famine. at this time i changed dolan’s name to Death because he was literally the grim reaper. he also wasnt God at this time. there was still some kind of higher power i think it was Stig. harlow was human and also lesbian now. nothing else interesting.
D: So when did I become Derek?
P: I dunno. some time after my birthday? when i started the storyline where you became human for a bit and needed a human name for Death. then i just got tired of calling you Death and stuck with Derek because it is better in every way.
D: Excellent judgement.
(from 28/10/2021)
P: this was probably the start of the all New and Improved derek storyline. the rest is pretty streamline from here and doesnt really need a recap.
D: Woof look how sweet and well-adjusted I looked back then! And that tiny nose.
P: yeah you still had some humanity (pupils) in your eyes. and still had the square glasses thing going on. eugh. waitwaitwait lets look at the first time i drew you and rumi lol
(from 11/2021)
D: We were so in love.
P: wow you guys have changed a LOT since then. for one: you were probably never that sweet to her. and she hates your guts now.
D: If I had any!
P: alright. that concludes this ramble on THE EVOLUTION OF DEREK
D: DERE(K)VOLUTION
P: that sounds stupid. welp. i will probably make a poll on whose meta we should recap next - because i am always looking for an excuse to make a google form. or just send smth to the askbox. i dont care. bye
D: Goodbye friends!
