So Tristan is kind of out of the question because he'd know if his sister had a baby or not. It would have to be someone who didn't know Sabine at the time, but is a good friend now, and I suppose Ketsu could be an option, but honestly, you mentioning Best Enemies brought the characters to mind, and that gave me the idea of Mara Jade. Or, more accurately, Mara Jade Kryze, because Bo-Katan adopted her in this AU. Despite Ursa and Bo-Katan's friendship, their families didn't hang out much, so Mara and Sabine didn't meet until they were both grown up—and at that point, people were still placing bets on how long it was gonna take before Sabine officially adopted the little five-year-old who seemed to go everywhere with her.

Mara and Sabine became good friends, and when Sabine took up the mantle of the leader of Mandalore, Mara went to Sundari with Sabine and her daughter.

Mara had never entertained suspicions about the kid, who I am currently taking name suggestions for. There had been a brief civil war not so many years ago that left plenty of orphans behind. And other than the dark hair, the kid didn't look like Sabine. Heck, Mara looks more like Bo-Katan than the kid looks like Sabine.

And, sure, she knew Sabine had been on an extended mission with a pair of Jedi, one of which was her age, but she didn't suspect anything. Even some years later, when they were close enough friends for Sabine to confide in her that she had been in love, once, long ago, Mara didn't think anything of it.

Then she sees Ezra for the first time, and she thinks, pff, he kinda looks like my honorary niece. That's it, for about seven seconds, at which point it all clicks together in her head. She looks up abruptly, and unintentionally locks eyes with the other Jedi guy on the mission.

She can read it in his shocked look—he's just come to the exact same conclusion.

Mara makes a mental note to snag a seat beside this guy at dinner. Like her honorary niece, she's no fan of Jedi as a rule, but there's a gleam in his eye that she can't help appreciating.

He's up to something, and Mara's pretty sure she wants a part in it.

okay okay that was a long ramble, it totally got away from me. Now, back to the topic of The Suspected Sabezra Baby—and more specifically, whether or not she is a Sabezra baby.

Honestly... I kinda wanna leave it up to interpretation. Let me put it this way—if this was an actual fic, it wouldn't be confirmed either way.

Her not being their kid does, imo, feel more in-character for them. Not that the resemblance between her and Ezra is total coincidence! One of the reasons Sabine took such a liking to her was because when she first encountered the girl, Sabine had only recently parted ways from Ezra. The pain of the separation was still fresh, and the kid reminded her of him. Sabine didn't intend to adopt her, not at first, but the more time she spent with the child, the more it felt like—well, a what-could-have-been. She looked like Ezra, and to Sabine, she became like the family Sabine could never have with him. It's a bittersweet thing.

It's also hilarious.

Because Sabine's BFF and Ezra's BFF are absolutely and 100% CONVINCED she's a sabezra baby. The resemblance is almost uncanny, admittedly. Maybe the Force has a sense of humor. But the fact remains that it is literally impossible for her to be their kid. Not that that would stop them.

HOWEVER.

It's also hilarious if she is their kid, by sheer virtue of how much the kid absolutely loathes the Jedi. She has beef with Ezra before she's even met him. If anyone dared call her parentage into question by suggesting she could have been the illegitimate child of her adoptive mother and a Jedi, she'd challenge them to an honor duel then and there. (No wonder Sabine never told her about her father.)

Another hilarious factor is that, in this case, there's a decent chance Ezra would figure it out. Which would, in turn, trigger a massive internal crisis, and lead to the most awkwardly silent dinner ever (Sabine doesn't trust herself to speak, her kid spends the whole dinner silently glaring, Ezra.exe has stopped working, and Luke and Mara are off in their own world whispering back and forth about this new discovery of theirs.)

Ezra spends the rest of the time on Mandalore trying to figure out how to tactfully bring up the fact that this is very clearly his kid and politely inquire Sabine, why in the name of the Force didn't you SAY SOMETHING?! He's also trying to figure out if he should say something to the kid herself—clearly, she resents him for not being a part of her life. (Joke's on him. She's got no clue he's her dad. She just Does Not Like Jedi.)

But either way, the fact remains that Sabine and Ezra have mutual friends who are massively invested, and who will not rest until they have the answers!

....I might have to write some of this.

OK OK so yeah, we all know how much opportunity for hilarity there is with an Obitine-style year-on-the-run No Order 66 AU for Sabezra. But have you considered the potential for an Obitine-style No Order 66 AU for Sabezra where the year-on-the-run was fifteen years ago and Ezra is now sent on a diplomatic mission to Mandalore, complete with a Skywalker tagalong of his own?

Hear me out on this.

The Skywalker, of course, is Luke. Luke and Ezra have been friends for ages. Luke was there for Ezra's phase of being tragically sad about missing Sabine. He knows they've got history. And, like his father before him, Luke has concluded that the real goal of the mission is actually to get his old buddy back together with his mandalorian gf.

Ezra is very aware of this. He just knows that Luke going along was Anakin's idea. (It's a miracle the guy's still on the Council. He's spent three decades doing nothing but incite all kinds of shenanigans. This is only the latest incident in a long list of mischief.)

Regardless, this is going to be awkward.

So, Ezra is mentally preparing himself for all kinds of potentialities as to how this reunion could go. As it turns out, it goes unexpectedly well—Luke's winking and eyebrow wiggles aside, that is.

And despite the initial awkwardness, Ezra decides it's nice to see Sabine again. She's changed; of course she has. She's a decade and a half older. She's inherited leadership of her clan, adopted a kid, and even recently been elected as the current ruler of Mandalore. But underneath it all, she's the same old Sabine, who told him about the constellations of the Mandalore sky and pestered him until he showed her the basics of lightsaber combat.

Sabine is equally happy to see Ezra again. He's changed; of course he has. He's been knighted and he has a different lightsaber—and also a beard, which is kinda hot but whatever—and he carries himself with a confidence he seemed to lack as a Padawan. But underneath it all, he's the same old Ezra, and all day, she fights the urge to smile at him in a way that nobody could misunderstand.

The Jedi are invited to a formal dinner that night, where Sabine introduces them to her adopted daughter and heir, a 14-year-old girl with an excess of attitude. She's not fond of Jedi. She tells Ezra so, to his face.

She's very opinionated.

Opinionated and full of attitude and sassy and fourteen and dark-haired and blue-eyed and Luke has just come up with a very interesting theory—

My pitch for a High School musical sequel

Sharpay's musical theater career never went anywhere, so now she lives vicariously through her daughter. She terrorizes the East High drama department because she demands her daughter get all the lead roles, and she comes in and micromanages everything, etc.

Sharpay Junior is our sympathetic main character who wants to escape from her mom's control. She likes musical theater, but she's beginning to think that, gasp, she might have other interests! (Shocking, I know).

Gabriella is the school's science teacher, and she serves as a kind of mentor for Little Sharpay, teaching her that it's okay to like music and still do other things.

Troy's the basketball coach, of course, continuing the family tradition of men who cling to their high school glory days.

Maybe Troy and Gabriella's son could be the romantic interest? Little Sharpay has a connection with him, but of course Sharpay doesn't want her daughter involved with the family that stole her lead roles out from under her, and she doesn't want this boy distracting her darling from her theatrical career.

Of course, the process of deciding not to be in the musical requires Little Sharpay to take part in several heartfelt and elaborately-choreographed school-wide musical numbers.

(because barty is the only part of this they have a problem with)

as for the couple itself, i think potter!reader and poly!bartylus would be a surprisingly healthy love story, despite the inevitable chaotic conception

firstly, the potter love is strong in reader and for you to shower them both in it would be a truly healing endeavor

the slytherin skittles have a lot of love to go around between them, but there is something about that brighter-than-the-sun, devoted, blinding, all-encompassing potter love that i think would just burn right through them and trigger every healing process

(much to both boys' initial fear and confusion)

secondly, the chaotic energy of someone who has grown up with james and been raised by effie and monty is the only one that can possibly match barty's unhingedness and adhd bursts

a potter!reader would also be rather grounded in a way that would help regulus keep barty managed – because that's an all-hands on deck type of situation

the dynamic in this trio would thus be rather balanced; equal parts fun, love and safety

not to mention that a potter!reader would be able to keep up with regulus and barty's verbal sparring – both regulus' jargon and academic debate-style and barty's snide comments and silly jokes

there are so many backgrounds for their dynamic that would make sense to me, so it's quite fun to play around with

i can see reader being affectionate to regulus because of sirius and him either being really fond of it or really adverse to it

depending on how resentful he is towards sirius and james at the time and how heavily he's clinging onto denial

either he's noticing her and feeling a warmth he can't quite explain OR he feels pitied or misunderstood and tries to run away at the sight of her

in the former case, barty would not want to be spending time with a potter voluntarily and tries to fight regulus on it until he meets you and becomes infatuated himself

in the latter case, barty would pick up on regulus' hesitance immediately (because he spends most of his time studying reg anyways)

and thus, both in a genuine attempt at helping him face reality and because he thinks it's hilarious, barty would be the one to seek out potter!reader when he's with regulus

thinking it will be a friendship for laughs but then oh. oh no. she's captivating.

alternatively, i can also see potter!reader seeing barty running around the castle being an absolute menace and going "that one. i want him."

(queue james pulling out his hair and marlene being concerned but still cackling loudly at the situation)

(because marlene would be a quasi-sister to potter!reader)

barty might at first lean into your attention and be like "haha this is going to mess with (james) potter so badly"

and then not even two minutes into talking with you he goes "fuck. it's going to mess with me"

it gives you and opportunity to get to know regulus outside of the whole situation with sirius and james and allows you to see him in a new light

when you're with barty and meet regulus, he's not somebody's traumatised little brother, he's the sarcastic and witty best friend – and that would do something to you

either way, bartylus have been in love for years on end without ever truly realising or acknowledging it

it's when potter!reader gets involved (in whatever way) that they understand "oh we're not just best friends, we're Best Friends, we're let's-spend-our-lives-together friends, which really is not friends at all"

(someone is bound to make comparisons between bartylus' and prongsfoot's belated realisations, and regulus will have to be held back from biting that person's head off)

Brighthammer is fine, not like I’m going crazy making this up. At least we admit that our heretical crack is all in good fun, unlike those damned Tourists that demand everything changed in the name of some DEI dogma in spite of sense. I loathe these MoDeRn AuDiEnCeS.

We can still have some Great Heresy equivalent in this, just not sure what. That’s one issue I’m running into with my RWBY/40K story. Chaos can still be a problem, as it always will be, perhaps alongside some other issues like the Enslavers and whatnot. Erebus did something to take half the legions to the Warp to give Chaos new toys without getting the big prize? Perhaps some outer galactic influence akin to the Nids can try to make purchase here. A Grimm opening? Something from the Deep Warp that even the Four fear reached up and caused some problems? A force from the future that decided to make problems in the present? Or it can be something specific for each general region of the galaxy, or something mostly whispered about but not fully known. Since this story could be told from Jaune’s perspective, perhaps he’s not aware of all the details so is just doing his best.

Big E? No, Big EEs! The biggest Dommy Mommy of them all! Stop glaring Malc! Perhaps she’s not quite a corpse queen but still mostly bound to Terra, limiting her influence. She can leave only for short spans of time, nowhere near enough to do anything useful for the controlling micromanagement ass she is. Gives everyone else the freedom for all the shenanigans we want. Not that EE would bother telling anyone why she’s confined to Terra, her secrets have secrets after all.

Small extra thought, Kitten from TTS also gets the bent treatment and is sent to be Jaune’s bodyguard of a sort. Or Kitten came from an alternate future where her orders from EEs was to help train Jaune to become a hero to help keep the galaxy spinning. Give EEs another headache since Kitten told her something to prove she’s not lying, but EE can’t see into the future to better control the situation and Kitten was ordered by the future EE to not obey current EE because reasons. Congratulations EE, you played yourself.

We can have the Primamas be themselves and have the RWBY girls alongside them. It’s not like there’s a shortage of space and roles in 40K, everyone can have a part to play somewhere. Rouge Traders, guardsmen, some advanced colonies with their own lesser version of Astartes, Squats, Nobles, Psykers, Assassinorum, Sisters, Commisar, local heroes, living saints, Eldar, other xenos, abhumans, X-Men, lots of options. It’d be a shame to just throw away those pictures and gf memes for the Primamas.

Jaune is the tallest and most capable of the RWBY protagonists, so the image that he’s the little guy doing that couch meme with these demigodsess is hilarious. The idea is Jaune has a normal yet potent human spirit which is what draws them, since it is the human spirit that has kept the Imperium going for so long. A super soldier doing the incredible is one thing, a normal man standing up to the impossible is more impressive. Perhaps a shard of the Emperor himself that also helps things along. It’s not perfect, he doesn’t know it’s there, he can’t control it, but its effects can be felt. Jaune is still the one who’s doing these deeds, spitting in the face of demons with a mere sword while his legs are shaking, but the Shard is there to help give him a bit of that Plot Armor. What’s 40K without Plot Armor? Which this shard talk reminded me of another fanfic of the same name but in Zootopia, potential idea there? Hmmmm, I’ll think on it. Of course he can have some imposter syndrome a la Cain, but with a tender heart and some of that implacable will of other heroes. He calls himself a coward yet is a total unit like Stark from Frieren. I thought about giving him some minor immortality, Vulkans hugs can kill a guy pretty easy. And that’s just friendly hugs, not to mention what goes on behind closed doors. I know there’s a story called Family Visits where Jaune is the son of Bobby G and the Primarchs have a buncha daughters, inspired from a different picture. Dunno if we can use the daughters in this though…

Eh well, like I said all in good fun here. Even if Fatally doesn’t wanna do this, this is still a fun au to think about.

the clinking of silverware and murmur of conversation filled the bustling restaurant. you and oscar had finally snagged a quiet corner table after a long day of practice. across from you, lando held court, recounting a hilarious story from your childhood.

"and then, there was the great custard incident," lando boomed, his laughter echoing. "remember, (y/n), when you-"

you doubled over, giggling. "oh my god, lando, don't!" heat rose to your cheeks at the memory, a childhood prank that involved a particularly disgruntled neighbor and a runaway bowl of dessert.

oscar, however, remained silent, his fork poised mid-air, a frown creasing his forehead. he watched you, his gaze lingering a little too long on the way your laughter lines crinkled around your eyes, the way your hand brushed against lando's arm playfully as you swatted him away.

lando, thankfully, oblivious to the undercurrent, continued, "and there you were, covered in custard, trying to explain to mrs. henderson it was just a... 'culinary experiment'."

you snorted, tears welling up in your eyes. "god, i miss those days." you reached out, bumping fists with lando playfully. "thanks for always having my back, even when i was a disaster."

a beat of uncomfortable silence followed. lando, finally noticing oscar's stony expression, cleared his throat. "right, well, enough about the past. oscar, how's the car feeling this week?"

oscar forced a smile, his tone clipped. "good. ready to take on the track." his gaze flickered back to you, a flicker of something akin to hurt in his eyes before he turned back to his plate, pushing the food around with a distinct lack of appetite.

the rest of the meal was strained. you tried including oscar in the conversation, but his responses were short, devoid of his usual easy banter. you stole worried glances at him, the carefree joy of your reunion with lando now tinged with a growing sense of unease.

as you exited the restaurant, lando clapped oscar on the shoulder. "good luck this weekend, mate. you'll smash it."

oscar mumbled a response, his eyes glued to the ground. the walk back to your apartment was filled with a suffocating silence. you knew, with a sickening certainty, that the carefree evening you envisioned had taken a sharp turn into jealousy lane

the silence in the car was deafening. oscar, usually a chatterbox during drives, hadn't uttered a word since leaving the restaurant. you kept glancing at him, his jaw clenched, eyes fixed on the road ahead. "what's wrong, oscar?" you finally asked, your voice barely a whisper.

he shrugged, not meeting your gaze. "nothing." but his tone was clipped, a stark contrast to his usual warmth.

his hand did not hover near your thigh, he didn't kiss you at the red lights, he didn't ask if you were cold with the AC. oscar had shut himself out.

over the next few days, "nothing" became your new normal. oscar became a ghost, barely acknowledging you. you'd catch him staring at you, then quickly look away. calls and texts went unanswered. you tried brushing it off, clinging to the hope it was just race week jitters, but the sinking feeling in your gut wouldn't budge. while sleeping he would mummer a goodnight and barely cuddle,

tonight, the dam broke. curled on the couch, tears blurring your vision, you dialed lando. "he's just being weird, lan," you choked out, your voice thick with unshed tears. "like, distant. like i don't even exist. i can't lose him lan, i really can't. but i'll leave if he wants because i just want him to be happy. even if it means its not with me"

suddenly, the front door slammed open. you flinched, dropping the phone. oscar stood frozen, his face pale, your tear-streaked cheeks a stark picture in the dim light. he had heard everything.

"(y/n), i..." his voice cracked, a battle raging in his eyes. before he could finish, a fresh wave of tears welled up. "oscar, what did i do?"

he took a shaky step towards you, then stopped. "i am so so so so so sorry baby." the confession tumbled out, raw and laced with shame. "i regret what i did. it hurt my heart being away from you. on purpose. seeing you with lando, so close... it made me jealous."

you stared at him, bewildered. "jealous? oscar, lando's practically my brother. we grew up together!"

he ran a hand through his hair, his frustration evident. "i know, i know. it's stupid. but seeing you laugh with him, the laugh you kept just for me..." his voice trailed off, heavy with regret.

a choked sob escaped your lips. "oscar, you're the one i love. the way i look at lando, it's nothing compared to you." you stood up, tears falling freely.

he mirrored your movement, his face etched with pain. "i messed up, (y/n). i let my insecurities cloud everything." his voice broke. "can you forgive me?"

you threw your arms around him, burying your face in his chest. he held you tight, his body trembling.

"just promise me," you whispered, pulling back slightly, "a) you'll tell me when something bothers you and b) you'll never let jealousy come between us again."

he cupped your face, his eyes filled with newfound resolve. "never. you and lando, your friendship is beautiful. i'll never take that away." he leaned in, his kiss a promise whispered against your lips.

the following days were filled with apologies, laughter, and tentative rebuilding. oscar apologized to lando, acknowledging his insecurities. you realized communication, even the uncomfortable kind, was the key.

that sunday, as you watched oscar race, a different kind of excitement bubbled within you. it wasn't just about his victory, but the fact that you had weathered the storm, emerging stronger as a couple. the bond you shared, forged in vulnerability and love, was a trophy far more valuable than any podium finish.

i'm always really interested in how the characters call each other in japanese games, so i laid out a few differences between the japanese and english versions of some ace attorney games that particularly interest me. this isn't meant to be an exhaustive list but it did get really long 😭

i highlighted english nicknames/etc in blue while japanese nicknames/etc are orange just to make reading a little easier

AA1-2

while only playing the english version i liked that maya called phoenix nick, it's a nickname that makes sense and phoenix is annoying to say and write anyway (lol) but the reason maya gives for this nickname in english is that it's what larry uses for him, which pales in comparison to maya in the japanese version opting for how mia used to call him: naruhodo-kun.

to me, this is a LOT more meaningful and informative than the english nickname because it not only is evidence of how much maya heard about phoenix from mia using that nickname, it also gives us a glimpse of maya's personality and her relationship with phoenix. -kun is an honorific that's usually used for either male classmates or for teachers/superiors to use with their students/subordinates. maya falls into neither of these categories with phoenix, but it also lines up with how she acts like the boss of the office a lot of the time. SO LIKE... ultimately the nickname nick just does not hold up in terms of both maya's reasoning for using it, and phoenix's apprehension at her calling him that... which i just think is a shame!! in the same vein, this nickname is passed down to pearl, and again you see phoenix having a Reaction to it which makes sense considering it's funny that a kid is calling him naruhodo-kun...

i don't only want to talk about changes in english that i don't prefer, so i also want to mention that i'm very impressed that they managed to get phoenix and edgeworth referring to each other by their surnames in english to sound natural... because it's also exactly what they do in japanese except there, the idea of male friends using their surnames with each other is a very very normal thing. i AM torn on the fact that in japanese larry also refers to the two of them by their surnames, which means all 3 of them are on equal grounds in that respect. AT THE SAME TIME... english makes larry's "nick" and "edgey" work so well that i really can't say we missed out with this localization, but i do like the relationship between these 3 so i do like that the japanese is indicative of it too :)

AA4

i'm skipping ahead to aa4 because trucy's also a very interesting localization to me... the first time i played aa4 i felt like trucy wasn't sufficiently differentiated enough from maya's character which is like. debatable but those were my initial thoughts anyway. in japanese though she uses third-person pronouns (calling herself by her own name, minuki) which is VERY distinct from maya. there are a number of ways to interpret this choice but i like the one that indicates that it's part of her stage persona. aside from that though, she also has a very normal nickname for apollo (odoroki-san, with -san indicating general politeness) while polly is um well canonically the name of a parrot LOL

i do find it pretty interesting that the above exchange is the first instance trucy uses the polly nickname, because it's entirely different in the japanese version. phoenix says "if this onii-chan over here can't help you..." to which trucy responds by saying "how could you, onii-chan!" this exchange is hilarious to me because phoenix referring to apollo as an onii-chan is pretty normal? it's common to refer to any young man as that and in this case he's also referring to apollo from trucy's perspective. but trucy DIRECTLY calling apollo onii-chan (brother) is just so funny because HERE it's a lot closer to how an actual younger sister would refer to her older brother; there's a difference between saying "this onii-chan" and just "onii-chan". now i'm not saying this was direct foreshadowing because onii-chan is also used between close friends/acquaintances but like... the possibility is there.

AA5

now onto simon because i don't actually have a problem with the localization making him a british weeaboo i think that's really funny but i DO wish the nicknames he uses for the defense attorneys were more... appropriate? the honorific -dono that he uses in english does complement his samurai look but it's usually used in contexts where there's some respect involved, which is... not simon's intention in japanese. i'm admittedly not too familiar with the nicknames he uses in japanese; he uses "[kanji] no ji", while using a kanji from phoenix/apollo/athena's surnames. by searching it in japanese, i'm finding answers that it was medieval slang used by men usually in red light districts and such, and was used to refer to those with equal or lower status to oneself but never to those of higher status. this is kinda the opposite of what -dono is which is used for those of equal or higher status!!

i also find it pretty amusing that despite him using the first kanji in phoenix's name; 成 (turn into, grow), he uses the second kanji in both apollo and athena's names; 泥 (mud) and 月 (moon) respectively. i can only imagine that he did this because the first kanji in their names; 王 (king) and 希 (rare, hope) respectively, were too positive/complimentary for him? LOL

AA6

now i want to to talk about apollo in aa6 because NNGNRHGH i'm not normal about this one. because like, similarly to what i said up there about phoenix, edgeworth and larry's relationship, it's completely normal for close male friends to use their surnames with each other. phoenix, being apollo's boss, refers to him as odoroki-kun (mirroring how mia and maya call phoenix). trucy uses odoroki-san, indicating general politeness and athena uses odoroki-senpai, because he's her senior in their workplace. clay uses odoroki (no honorific), which is the same "level" as phoenix/edgeworth/larry's relationship.

a male character never being referred to as their first name is pretty normal, which is also the case in the aa games. franziska calls edgeworth by his first name reiji which is SUPPOSED to stand out because it's notably impolite/informal for someone who is younger than him, which suits the idea of her thinking of herself as the elder sibling. for additional reference, phoenix is only referred to by his first name by dahlia/iris; ryuu-chan ("feenie" equivalent) and desiree; ryuuichi-kun ("nicky boy" equivalent). so apollo is referred to exclusively by his surname, because there isn't anyone who's associated with him who would feasibly use his first name.

THAT IS. UNTIL we meet datz who is the first (!!) character to use apollo's first name in japanese. this moment doesn't stand out in english because i KNOOWWW datz uses the AJ nickname which is very cute but he doesn't actually use that nickname the first time he indicates that he knows apollo in case 6-3!! phoenix's momentary confusion here is also explained because while he obviously knows apollo's full name, he's never heard anyone refer to him with it!!!

so phoenix's thoughts in japanese here were originally "housuke... wait, that bracelet! that's odoroki-kun!"

dhurke and later nahyuta (during the last moments of the 6-5 trial) also refer to apollo with his first name, which is... really nice!!! they're family!!!! i mourn the fact that this distinction isn't visible in english because most characters just call him apollo but it's special in japanese... it's only dhurke, nahyuta and datz who use his first name.... i'm normal i promise

funnily enough i sort of have the opposite issue with nahyuta, who is generally referred to as prosecutor sahdmadhi in english but nayuta-kenji (prosecutor) in japanese. i'm assuming this is because his name is written with his given name first unlike japanese names, so they just used his given name instead of his surname...? unfortunately we don't have an example of any other foreign prosecutor as reference (i'm excluding van zieks here because they DO use his surname but it's also an entirely different time and place) but i prefer the english here since it also makes it stand out when apollo, dhurke and datz (with yuty hehe) use his first name with him.

but then again... rayfa also refers to him as prosecutor sahdmadhi in english, but just calls him nayuta in japanese. there aren't a lot of characters rayfa refers to by name but generally she's either overly polite (with ga'ran and inga) or overly impolite (with phoenix and apollo). it makes sense that the way she calls nahyuta is a little unique, since he's of lower status than her but not enough to get a rude nickname fdjhja... and then of course at the end of the game she tries to call him onii-(chan? san? sama? we just don't know) which nahyuta interprets as oni (demon) i think the localization here is really impressive actually. they somehow managed to seamlessly fit braid head into the mix of barbed head and horn head (both nicknames that refer to their hairstyles) while braid also begins with the same letters as brother... anyway i think i slightly prefer that rayfa (and ga'ran) call nahyuta by his first name rather than by his prosecutor title, it's indicative of their higher status because of the lack of an honorific but by the end of the game it fits in with the idea of them all being family...

TGAA1-2

you would think that because tgaa opted to leave japanese honorifics in the dialogue that there wouldn't be any differences in how the characters refer to each other but there are... first of all kazuma and ryunosuke are once again male friends who refer to each other by their surnames without an honorific in japanese, but the english has them use their first names with each other instead. i can understand this change because characters using only their surnames with each other feels oddly distant in english, and while it worked for phoenix and edgeworth's relationship it definitely doesn't suit kazuma and ryunosuke's.

additionally, the way susato calls ryunosuke was also changed from naruhodo-sama to naruhodo-san. this is... also an interesting change since it requires the player to have some basic knowledge of japanese honorifics but for some reason decided to change it anyway, despite the fact that susato also uses -sama with kazuma... one thing to note is that susato does use kazuma's first name instead of his surname like she does with ryunosuke, which helps indicate their closer relationship despite her still showing respect with the -sama honorific. in that sense naruhodo-san feels like an interesting middle ground because she's still using his surname but doesn't seem to view his position with her as equal to kazuma's? i assume that was the intent of the localization, similarly to how the way kazuma and ryunosuke call each other was changed to indicate closeness to the english-speaking player

anyway while i do prefer the original japanese version most of the time, my general view of original vs localization is like wow! two cakes! i might prefer one of those cakes more, but the english version usually provides enough that i like that both canons exist. because of this i can't agree with the idea that all localization is bad nor the side that believes the original doesn't matter because you're engaging only with the english side of the fandom. both are good and can reveal interesting things about the characters, story and setting!!

☠ Toby Rogers/'Ticci Toby' HCs ☠ this is just how I personally perceive him !! it's different for everyone! TWs; drugs, violence, memory loss

Toby mostly relies on drugs to help his mind and physical being. He wouldn't touch anything hardcore, some weed here and there. Being mellowed out is the only way he can really sleep due to the fact that he is an insomniac.

Doesn't remember any of his trauma. None of it at all. He knows he lost his sister and he knows he lost his dad, but in regards to how he couldn't really tell you. As for the abuse, he remembers little to nothing but as a response, his body still reacts to the things that he was exposed to as a child. (Flinches a lot for example at sudden movements.)

He has a pretty cold persona to people he doesn't know, putting up a brick wall to protect himself. It would take awhile for him to open up but deep down he's soft and goofy. He loves to make people laugh and enjoys their company however with strangers he is quiet and reserved.

His mother was German and her family remained in Germany while she decided to move to the US. Toby can speak fluently but as he got older, it became more broken as he didn't have any reason to speak it. As a child, he visited his family a lot in Germany and had a close relationship with his Grandma. He doesn't even remember her now.

He doesn't have a drivers licence but owns a car. The most reckless driver ever. Drove a motorbike once and fell off, finding it hilarious. He would do it again at some point for sure.

Got a matching tattoo with someone once (a literal stranger.)

When his hair is really messy or too long, he'll mostly bear a baseball cap to hide it. Dude gets the worst bed hair ever.

He's a pretty amazing artist.

A heavy smoker.

Also very impulsive.

Owns an IPhone and two flip phones that he mostly uses as burners. His IPhone is smashed to pieces but still manages to keep his Duolingo streak. (He has a 200 day streak.)

Very underestimated, used to be a pretty weak proxy but he's earned his 'ranking' so to say. A lot of people underestimate how smart he really is.

Will play mind games with his victims to drive them in complete hysteria. He'll stalk you, putting you on edge and making you feel uncomfortable. Seeing his victims slowly lose their mind is all part of the fun. He'll break into your house, steal belongings, take pictures of you sleeping and send them to you from an unknown number. He'll call you on a specific time, every day on the dot, just to breathe down the phone. Then he'll just drop it all to make you feel at ease, giving you a break to feel a sense of comfort again before he suddenly swoops in for the attack, catching you off guard.

TOBY IS NOT AN ABUSER. HOWEVER, he has his fathers rage. Toby will say things in the heat of the moment. He can be spiteful, hurtful and downright nasty. Things will come out without his acknowledgement and he will shout a lot. But he will later feel an insane amount of guilt and he will cry a lot as a result of it.

Toby was manipulated into working for Slenderman but the urge to kill was always in the back of his mind. Slenderman is NOT a care giver nor does he protect any of the proxies. Toby is completely brainwashed into looking up to Slenderman like he is some kind of God.

He genuinely thinks and believes Slenderman saved his life and changed it for the better and now Toby will worship him in a very sick and twisted way. He is essentially a slave and will work his ass off for him just to not even be acknowledged by Slender.

Always has some kind of stubble on his chin and upper lip.

Bruises really easily.

He is a really good thief, something he trained himself to become good at due to always being on the run.

Will, without a doubt, laugh at children that fall over in front of him. Dude will POINT and laugh, he's an asshole.

Very competitive and hates the idea of losing.

What if he can’t truly age as well like every few decades he will come back being a lil guy and it will literally not stop

Any death brings him back to being a lil teen a few years short of his age during linked universe

Be it a quick death or a very slow one

Even dying from old age won’t be his end

But that gets even more horrifying when we consider that the theory of which link is in link between worlds

Because the Zelda from the original games canonically has a different appearance

But the Zelda in link between worlds also looks different initially which made many people wonder what timeline this games belong in

So what if link to the past along with oracle of seasons and link between worlds have literal decades between eachother

Because that way the Zelda kidnappings will not even be ridiculous

Like link to the past was one Zelda

The final oracle game Zelda was a descendant of the other who was kidnapped much later

and link between worlds was the descendant of the descendant

And fable is actually the great granddaughter of the first Zelda that legend met

And he is centuries old and Ravio had no clue that he moved in with a centuries old being

Because that would be hilarious if Ravio is like 20 at most while legend barely remembers the joy of being just twenty

The chain who eventually became more people legend loves so dearly who legend grew to love he knows that some he will never see because they are in different timelines.

Yet he has his very vast memories of all those people

Remembering fighting time and Wild for the title old man (he unfortunately didn’t win)

Remembering teasing twilight , skyand warriors (and totally losing half the time)

Remembering when wind wanted to sail with him claiming they were pirates together

Reminder that while he did apparently "get his kisses in" in that mutually toxic situationship fling thing Fabian and Aelwyn had for what I can only assume was two weeks, Fabian has canonically never had sex before Mazey. This is hilarious to me.

In a lot of older fics people operate on the assumption that they hooked up. Which makes sense because that was the implication, junior year just happened years later and softcore retconned it because well it was never really confirmed and this version of the joke is funnier. Also finally kinda nailing down how old Aelwyn actually is might have made it kinda iffy? Cause now it's not haha Adaine's older sister who is also still in Highschool though, now it's Adaine's older sister who does have a job and it's middle school teacher?? (Which she did get through blackmail rather than any appropriate process but. Y'know.) Maybe it would have been weird to continue that bit now, i don't know and hey don't really care about the reason.

But now I can only assume they made out a few times and Fabian fumbled and got nervous when it seemed like it'd go further and was generally just really pathetic teenage cringe failure and Aelwyn was just like "okay what the fuck am I doing" and dumped him and nothing "serious" ever happened. Fabian was bummed out about it for two days and then got over it because I mean. He knew that'd happen. He's not the most insightful guy, I'd dare he he's the least emotionally intelligent of the Bad Kids. But he knew. He understood that much. He made sure to be as dramatic as possible during those two days, though.

Oh my god, the au where Daemon and the boys end up in Winterfell has hilarious potential.Ned is frantically looking for a way to hide 2 kids and 2 dragons, Cat is first furious because of suspicions of repeated treason and then terrified because it looks like they're about to commit treason.Robb, Jon, Bran and Theon are dying to find out what these strange children they met on the way back from the execution are.Robert if he finds out about the boy who looks like Rhaegar will be furious, Cersei is absolutely thrilled (she's willing to wait). Daemon who was "thrown" further away from Winterfell goes after his children, which horrifies half the North.I'm especially curious how Viserys and Dany will react to the new Targaryens. Jon Connington better not be told about Rhaegar, he'll have a heart attack.

Any time you throw a bunch of Targaryens and dragons into a world that has zero-to-few of either, it's gonna be a mess. And holy shit, Cersei being "willing to wait" is so horrific but also so in character. 😱 (OTOH, Daemon is also a very handsome man and not dissimilar to Rhaegar, and he's about to be seizing power. In the brief window before Daemon learns about the Lannister treachery and how it killed OG!Rhaegar's children, she might have some ambitions there.)

I hadn't thought about them encountering Jon and Rhaegar on the way back from the execution. That's probably too early, since that's when they get the dire wolves, which is roughly two months before Robert arrives. Daemon would surely have found the twins by then and/or wreaked enough havoc with Caraxes in search of them to change the course of Robert feeling safe enough to travel North. But perhaps Daemon is displaced slightly in time as well? That gives Jon and Rhaegar time to settle in, grief-stricken at losing Daemon and the world they'd grown to regard as their own, and vulnerable with their young dragons. Oh, but the heartache of Jon seeing the other Jon with baby!Ghost and feeling the loss of his own Ghost.

Viserys's instability is pretty set at this point, so I suspect he doesn't survive long once he and Dany join Daemon's growing gaggle of Targaryens. (He might even make an attempt on one of the boys to steal one of their dragons.). Since Dany is pregnant and with Drogo at this point, it might be more of a struggle to extract them unless we handwave the book timeline a bit to have Dany's marriage happen not when she's thirteen ffs.

I do think that bb!Rhaegar will be regarded as Daemon's son and not the original Rhaegar because no timeline makes sense there; he can't be Rhaegar's dead son Aegon because the ages don't match up and obviously he's not Rhaegar himself. Even DAEMON being around makes no sense, but people are slightly more willing to accept that he's himself, given Caraxes and Dark Sister. And sure, okay, he has two other sons that history doesn't know about by his first wife. But anyone who knew Rhaegar before and sees him is gonna be making those comparisons, in the same way that Resonant!Jon and Ned's Jon are gonna be compared. Eerily similar, but also noticeably different in ways where their relation to Daemon is clear.

Politically, I think it's a terrible decision for Ned to shelter the boys and their dragons, but given how alike this Jon looks to his own, and Jon himself saying things that only his Jon would know to convince him to protect them--he's going to be torn.

Girl really needs to hear that but the thing is - if it's not her, it's nobody in that madcap household full of impractical genius dramatic types.

Honestly, the age gap thing makes so much sense. She doesn't have daddy issues per se, she just has overall parent issues ie her parents basically don't parent at all and she's the one who has to be the grown up. Now yes, she's 20. But her parents are in their 40s and the hosts and yet they hared off to bang or w/e leaving her to deal with the whole insane party. And you get the sense it's been like this forever.

The thing is, it totally makes sense for her to end up with Rupert - like she's a caretaker by nature but with him it's (1) one person (2) who actually appreciates her domestic goddess routine instead of taking it for granted and viewing her as dim (3) unlike her fam won't leave her utterly alone 100% of the time to cope with 100% of the stuff. Like seriously - her sister is a minor but neither her brother nor her parents do anything to clean up, it's the freaking neighbor who helps wtf.

Probably the first time Rupert tucked a pretty woman into bed without climbing in after, in years.

At least someone appreciated it.

PS That was very kind of him (and largely because Taggie was distraught over the pics) but also hilarious.

(It's kinda telling that while Taggie ends up with someone close to her father's age, he is unlike daddy, eminently practical in real life matters.)

I am all up in my feels about the first chapter from the new Law novel. (I read a translation here.) General reactions under the cut for spoilers:

This seems to be taking place fairly early into the Heart Pirates' career, as we start out with just the OG Four on the crew. And Hakugan is the first recruit.

Law already has a bounty of 80 million berries, and he has his epithet of "Surgeon of Death." Chalic also says he's going to take the title of Strongest in the North Blue from Law. Again, when the Hearts are still just four strong.

Bepo, Shachi, and Penguin originally all wore orange jumpsuits. It was Bepo's idea, and Shachi and Penguin were all in. Law is too particular about his own fashion so won't wear one (😂), but he's fine leaving the others to it to create a sense of unity in the crew. They're very proud of their jumpsuits!

We get one of my favorite tropes: Devil Fruit users going into the water. This, apparently, is the impetus for the Hearts to take on their sea-based combat abilities; they want to not only take on ships from above and below the surface but always be ready if Law goes into the water again. They love Law so much. I cry.

Hakugan is the one to rescue Law from the water, and he does it because he thought Law looked like a "hero of justice." Law scoffs because pirates are hardly "heroes of justice," but he also doesn't hate it either because it makes him think of, amusingly, of Sora (Law, you nerd), but also his parents. 😭

Law goes out of his way to help Hakugan and some fellow villagers who were kidnapped by a defeated pirate crew by bringing them home. Law says it's because he owes Hakugan for saving his life ("Life is give and take," which he learned from Wolf), but Hakugan calls him on it. Law, your kindness is showing again.

Law originally had a graded sword, Koshou, but it broke during his fight with Chalic, and he only had the hilt after going in the water. He's pretty heartbroken about losing the sword. Oh, Law. Always having what you love ripped from you.

When they reach Hakugan's home island (Welbems Island), it has nice weather, so Penguin and Shachi change into Aloha shirts. Hilarious, and also clearly a nod to Wolf.

Law, thinking of Corazon and Wolf, also refuses to let Hakugan (who wears his mask because he has a severe burn on his face from rescuing an old woman and her daughter from a fire) avoid visiting the village chief. He even ruffles Hakugan's hair at one point and encourages him. Softie.

Law spends the whole chapter trying to warn civilians that they are pirates and probably dangerous, and everyone looks at them and goes

Hakugan's parents were killed by pirates who are in control of part of the island, and Hakugan wants to avenge them. Law tells him not to get obsessed with revenge. Trafalgar Literal Hearts on His Sleeve Law. He does, at least, recognize his own hypocrisy as his desire for revenge just keeps growing.

Hakugan has a little sister, Nanagi, who reminds Law of Lami, and he teases her, which feels nostalgic. Just rip my heart out, why don't you. Nanagi gives Bepo, Shachi, and Penguin nicknames but just calls Law by his name; they have a little rivalry going, and it's adorable.

The Hearts spend three days at Hakugan's house, and Law spends his vacation reading medical books and practicing swordsmanship. Giant. Nerd.

Law actually laughs quite a few times in this chapter. There are a lot of really wonderful little character moments showcasing how close the OG Four really are.

Looks like Law will meet Kikoku next chapter.

It's been way too long since Law appeared in the manga, so it's good to get some fresh Law content. That was a lot of fun, and I'm excited for the next chapter!

Mario and Luigi Headcanons my sister and I came up with.

Luigi is into wrestling. Being much higher ins defense he can tank hits, and also like Judo.

Mario is into Boxing and Kick Boxing, he can kick at a ninety degree angle.

The brothers like to spar with each other. And they don’t hold back, looks like they are trying to kill each other.

Luigi can get out of any situation, mans is fast on his feet that you blink and you’ll miss him. He’s also a quick thinker.

Mario has deadly aim, hardly misses his target even when it’s far away.

Both brothers, after eating so many things from the mushroom kingdom, have found they can take damage easier and are very flexible now. Downsides are human food tastes off now, it’s not bad but not like they remember it.

If they look at each other and nod, putting down money, they just did a silent Bet. And both of them play dirty with each other during this competitions.

Most of these wouldn’t have come up with. I never think of what kind of things they’d like when it comes to fighting styles. Like sure pretty much everyone can agree that Luigi is defense, but I don’t think of him as tanks if that makes sense? Mario being in boxing, tho, sounds extremely possible since he literally punches in Mario 64. That boy has so much energy it’s hilarious.

Allhaven and Evrkynd: An Aanya (and Ezran) Meta

So back before s7, I predicted that Aanya would play a significant role in returning Ezran to his chosen path of radical love after he's shaken from it by being unexpectedly confronted with an alive Runaan. Obviously, that wound up being hilariously incorrect... but I still think the analysis was, at the time, sound.

In arc 1, Aanya is set up as the model for Ezran in... basically every respect. Like, the number of ways Ezran in early s3 directly parallels Aanya at the Pentarchy Summit in s2 is anything but subtle:

They also both leave s3 in a very similar place, as young monarchs who refused to take their people to war, but stepped up to defend peace. Knowing that Ezran would struggle with Runaan's role in his father's death, it made perfect sense that Aanya could relate—Avizandum orphaned her, and while she wasn't interested in taking aggressive action for the sake of revenge (as opposed to Kasef), she probably still felt some kind of way about riding to the defense of Xadia and Zym. It made sense that she would continue in her narrative role as a sort of preview for Ezran's behavior, as far as putting aside personal grudges for the common good.

In fact, the Book Two: Sky novelization makes it explicit. The Pentarchy Summit sequence ends with a segment from Aanya's point of view, in which she privately displays a fair amount of contempt for the other human monarchs and (somewhat hilariously) labels Viren as "aging," but it ends with this:

As a young ruler, she had the opportunity to correct the course of violence that her parents had been a part of. And she hoped to do just that.

As in the series, the Pentarchy Summit in the novelization is intercut with Callum opening and reading Harrow's final letter, in which he urges Callum and Ezran to do the same: turn the story of the world from one of strength and violence to one of peace and love. (Well, less intercut than the series, because different media. But it comes between Callum sitting down to read the letter, and them him actually reading it.) Again, we are meant to see Aanya as strongly aligned with the main trio in the sense of being

We then didn't really get anything to contradict any of that in s6, where her appearance mostly just indicated that she was going to play a bigger role in s7. However, when s7 arrived? Well, she's still very much meant to be compared with and contextualize Ezran's decisions and actions, but as this series is so fond of doing, she herself is massively recontextualized as a character, in turn.

The Orphaned Queen

In s7, we see an Aanya that is different from—but not inconsistent with—what we saw in the first arc. The key is this:

Aanya has had a much different experience from Ezran's—she has had the people around her betray and attempt to manipulate her. Has Aanya ever been able to feel truly safe, outside of the measures she herself is able to take in her own defense?

Contrast this with Ezran, who is generally surrounded by people he can trust implicitly. He does get briefly conspiracy-ed off the throne, but his loyal allies immediately start working to restore him. In arc 2, we see that he is still close with those allies, and the untrustworthy actors have been removed from his immediate orbit. We don't know a ton about Harrow's High Council beyond Viren and Opeli—there was Saleer (untrustworthy), but there were also others, none of whom are present for Ezran's rule. Ezran's council is made up of Opeli, Barius, and Corvus—three people who supported him without reservation through Viren's coup—plus Soren, who displayed his loyalty to Ezran at the end of s3 by "killing" his father (and losing his sister), and then Callum, Ezran's own brother and staunchest protector until Corvus and Soren entered the scene. Unlike Aanya, who is both younger than Rayla and has a higher body count, Ezran appears to have never picked up a weapon for anything but play-fighting with Callum. Aanya simply does not have the luxury of safety and trust that he does.

(We have a single mention in a single interview indicating that Aanya has an adoptive older brother, which makes for another point of close comparison with Ezran in that they are both in the unusual situation of being young monarchs with living older siblings. Presumably, if Aanya truly trusts anyone, it would be him. While she comforts Ezran about his falling out with Callum without even mentioning that she has her own older brother, she does speaks in a way that could suggest personal experience—which would indicate that she and Grark may have had their own struggles. In a medium where time is so valuable that every shot and line of dialogue needs to be scrutinized for storytelling efficiency, exposition about Aanya's family situation may just not be a priority. Personally, I'm not really committed to believing that he actually exists and isn't some kind of large and protective pet, but I feel obligated to mention him in the context of "does Aanya trust anyone?")

So while Ezran, having grown up in relative security, is inherently very trusting (something also driven by the faith of his True Heart that people are good), and Aanya, despite being ostensibly aligned with him in nature and goals, is very much not.

Trust Me to Carry It

Reaching s7, Ezran and Aanya actually have an interesting pair of exchanges about trust, and specifically about trust between the two of them. During Ezran's first council meeting at the Banther Lodge, when Callum (their relationship already visibly fracturing) fails to support him at even the bare minimum level of paying attention, he turns to Aanya, instead. She initially demurs, citing that she is not a member of the council, but Ezran insists:

Aanya appears to not really know how to respond to that, though she takes it seriously and wants to recognize the gesture. She settles for reaffirming the debt owed to Katolis by Duren, and pledging to honor it:

We'll address the rest of this scene in a bit, but first I want to look at a later one—a very subtle moment, but one I think is important.

After the confrontation between Callum and Ezran (in which Aanya has a role, and believe me, I'll touch on that later), Ezran's emotions are running high—he's angry, he's distraught, and Aanya steps in to move him to a more private setting where he can feel his feelings. On the Banther Lodge bridge, there is this exchange:

Ezran cites a time he and Callum had (much lower-stakes) discord, specifically a time when Callum dismissed Ezran's (admittedly far-fetched) claims about his own experience and knowledge of the world, and in response, Aanya makes a gesture of the exact opposite. Callum didn't believe Ezran that the ducks preferred berries, but Aanya offers him berries to feed to the ducks.

We also don't really have a strong picture of how open Ezran is in arc 2 about his ability to understand animals—he seems to be more open about it than he was in arc 1, when he kept it concealed in large part because Callum didn't believe him. It makes sense that he would have grown in confidence after Callum's turnaround, along with both Rayla and Claudia believing him without reservation, but I still get the impression it's something he rarely talks about. He doesn't hide it, in that he will listen to animals and respond directly to them in front of even relative strangers, like Terry, but... maybe it's just the disconnect in how even Ezran treats animals vs. humans/elves, but there's really no evidence that anyone other than Callum and Rayla know, and everyone else just treats things like Bait's "seat" on the council as a child's adorable quirks. So while him indicating openly to Aanya that he can communicate with animals doesn't necessarily mean anything, it's still kind of surprising.

I'll circle back to Aanya display of trust in Ezran (eventually), but first: a quick(ish) look at what Ezran's trust in Aanya winds up meaning in s7 regarding her influence on him.

Your Angel or Your Devil

Aanya enters Ezran's circle of advisors at a time when he is in great turmoil, and vulnerable because of that. He's also struggling with traumatic growth of a kind his other advisors would prefer to shield him from, but that leaves him straining against their expectations. That he will need and want new voices among his advisors has always been an eventual reality, and Aanya is a very appropriate candidate. However, where things get interesting is that, despite her uniformly positive role in arc 1 and in s6, in s7 her influence on Ezran is frequently not framed as necessarily a positive.

In the first Banther Lodge council scene, as described above, Ezran explicitly places Aanya in a position of trust, and she returns with a pledge of support. In context, Ezran has just been encouraged by Opeli and Barius to focus on rebuilding Katolis and reassuring its people. He is conflicted, being deeply affected by Sol Regem's attack—in a way, a breach of his trust in Xadia and the world at large—and questions whether it's worth rebuilding without ensuring that everything will not be so easily destroyed again. To emphasize his point, he knocks over his goblet—the goblet that Aanya then picks up and offers back to him as part of her affirmation that Duren will aid Katolis in any way needed.

She then goes on to agree with his concerns about Katolis's vulnerability, something that visibly disturbs what was previously Ezran's core council:

This is a moment where Ezran takes a distinct step away from his childhood, even before his critical confrontation with Callum, in that he looks to and takes the advice of a peer, rather than a guardian. Previously, the closest thing Ezran had to a peer within his council was Callum, and Callum just demonstrated how unsuited he has always been for that role.

Opeli (and Barius, and Corvus, and Soren) has, from the very beginning, had an interest in protecting Ezran not just physically, but mentally and morally, as well. On Ezran's first full day as king, the adults in the room all suddenly act like they're under tiktok censorship and have to say "unalived" when learning and discussing the news that the four other human monarchs have been attacked, and three of them are dead or sufficiently incapacitated that they may as well be dead (Kasef is acting independently as Ahling's heir, not under Ahling's direction or advice). Ultimately, that might be a kind thing to do! Ezran's father was assassinated, and a coordinated attack on human kings and queens suggests that he may be in mortal danger—something potentially traumatic for a *checks watch* ten-year-old already under significant pressure. Aanya, however, never received that grace, so when Ezran's adult advisors are trying to direct him toward peaceful rebuilding and implicitly reassure him that everything will be okay, Aanya is frank in telling him that safety frequently has to be ensured, not assumed.

She's not wrong, particularly within the frame of her own trauma experience, which is a caveat she even makes explicit. (This is the girl who brings her magic explosive arrows to a wedding. Just in case.) However, as with the many, many people in this series who are not technically wrong, she's also not right—she is putting Ezran on a path that we as the audience immediately recognize as dangerous. So while Aanya in a lot of ways appears to be taking over Opeli's role in counseling Ezran both emotionally and practically, she does so in a way that is... interestingly reminiscent of Aaravos.

Project Ruby Fire

Now that I've made that insane claim, let's look briefly at the magical nuclear deterrence plan. Or rather, let's look at how it's proposed.

Aanya makes a pledge of support and service:

Confronts his enemies(?) aggressively in a way that escalates the situation:

and pushes him from a vague "the future of my people/humanity needs to be protected" toward a specific target:

Above all, she gives Ezran a secret, magical resource to be used for the benefit of humanity against those who would attack/oppress them, entirely changes the face of any conflict to a type of warfare never before seen, and that carries a spiraling moral risk—when you've got a bunch of nuclear warheads, every threat becomes something you may need to nuke. Ezran, after all, goes very quickly from "we're only building such powerful weapons so we'll never have to use them" to... well, using them.

Shitposts aside, I don't think Aanya is doing any of this maliciously—she's not love-bombing Ezran to manipulate him later, nor is she using him to push forward the fire ruby weapons development and exploit them for some kind of secret personal reasons. I think she is genuinely trying to help. What I think is actually going on here is that Aanya is representative of the rest of the Pentarchy and/or humanity—a group the principal characters visibly lose touch with more than once:

She's not following a pattern reminiscent of Aaravos because she's like Aaravos, but because that's what Aaravos's influence has made humanity over the centuries. It's an example of the insidious effect that not just dark magic, but the division of the continent and pitting humans and Xadia against each other has had.

Aanya may not hold any particular grudge against Xadia, but she isn't prepared to trust them, either—instead, she prepares for the worst. Her fire ruby arrows don't appear in the arc 1 final battle, a situation where you'd expect them to be used if they had been available, suggesting that they're something she oversaw the creation of during the two years after tentative peace with Xadia was established. She remains ready to defend herself, even against what are ostensibly allies. The soft threats are the worst.

A Bright Future for Humanity

Ultimately, Ezran is able to recover most, if not all, of his pre-s7 convictions regarding radical love and pursuit of peace—notably after taking himself to a place Aanya can/does not follow. Aanya obviously supports him in this, and it's not entirely clear whether Project Ruby Fire continues. Aaravos's return is on the horizon, and it proved effective against him once, already. (Though, as Aaravos himself warns, he does not fall for the same tricks twice.)

Going forward, a strong narrative role for Aanya given how she has already been used would be as a continued counterpart to Ezran—in that, as Ezran represents the reunification of humans and Xadia, she represents a united humanity within that. Throughout arc 2, we don't see anyone from any of the other human kingdoms—even though after two years, they ought to have worked out new rulers—only Katolis and Duren. There are models for Neolandian, Del Barian, and Evenerean soldiers from s3, but none appear in the Evrkynd scene—though there also aren't even any Durenian soldiers there, despite Aanya's presence, only Katolian soldiers and civilians. (To be fair, it's presumably still Katolian soil, since it's where Viren crossed with his armies and they were headed for the Breach before hearing it had been destroyed. But that just makes the need for a future united humanity more obvious.)

They could also, of course, be setting up an eventual romantic relationship between Aanya and Ezran. At twelve and thirteen years old, we can't exactly expect sparks to be flying, but there are a couple significant times when Aanya appears to be paralleling Sarai, not to mention their scene on what might as well be declared "Callum and Rayla Affirmations of Devotion" bridge.

Sarai is also presented as a warrior-queen, with a desire to improve the future world. I've written a bit about what Sarai might have seen in Harrow, and... even noted at the time (also prior to the s7 release) that she was likely similar to Aanya. Aanya and Ezran could have that same kind of dynamic—the pragmatist who grounds the idealist in reality, and the idealist who inspires the pragmatist to greater dreams.

Finally, I made the comparison up there between Aanya's pledge of service and Aaravos's, but there are others that could be made:

It's not a ship I have any investment in, but the foundations are admittedly sound.

FINALLY: A Shot in the Dark

I managed to write all of this without actually addressing the question that made me think about any of it in the first place, which is: would Aanya have shot Callum, if Ezran had given the order?

Short version: no, I don't think she would have.

To elaborate, the confrontation with Callum (and Rayla, and Runaan) comes right after Aanya has pledged Duren's (and her) support to Katolis (and Ezran)—whatever they need. Here, despite having no real personal stake in the conflict (though she probably has some strong feelings about assassins, in general), she lends Ezran her martial support, much in the way she did in s3 for the final battle. Aanya shoots two arrows, one of which is close enough to hitting Runaan that Rayla feels she has to deflect it, and the other of which grazes him—what she calls a warning shot.

What Aanya is actually giving Ezran in this scene is the appearance of strength and ruthlessness. As someone who grew up surrounded by people seeking to exploit what they saw as weaknesses—such as her young age—she's highly aware that a major factor in defensive strength is deterrence through intimidation. Ezran also knows this, on some level:

Ideally, she won't have to shoot Callum to get him to back down, only look like she will. As I noted earlier, her actions do escalate the conflict—but also may very well have worked to resolve it, had it been anyone other than Callum.

Ezran backing down is also crucial in setting up their next scene, which includes the ducks-berries sequence and Aanya declaring that she will extend her support to entrusting Ezran with the secret of the fire rubies. I think, because Ezran didn't give the order, she has seen that he's not going to foolishly escalate conflicts out of anger or pride. She placed herself in his hands as an indiscriminate weapon, and he chose not to use it.

If Ezran had ordered her to shoot Callum, I think she would have lost basically all respect for him. If she shot at all, she would be deliberately shooting to miss.

And that's what I think about Aanya.
