the longer i look at this panel the more deranged i feel about it. this is environmental storytelling at its finest.

the eodio stand-in doll in particular makes me crazy. where did it come from? did thistle just pop into the village like "hey ungrateful wretches, one of you needs to make me a life-sized mannequin, For Reasons". did he make it himself? seems quite unlikely, yet the possibility haunts me. i mean, i guess there could've been one just lying around the dungeon somewhere. it's the act of replacement itself that really gets to me. (edit: it's been pointed out to me that the eodio doll also could have been left behind as part of delgal's escape plan. slightly different kind of madness but tbh, just as funny-sad to me if that happened and thistle went Ok, Guess That's Eodio Now.)

both the wives are there too. we know very little about them, which makes me tend to assume thistle wasn't all that close to them, but they're still included. when did they end up here? did he kick their souls out of their bodies at some point, or were they among those who left their bodies voluntarily to try and escape? when did yaad become an effective orphan, delgal an effective widower? women in the margins of the narrative, tell me your stories!

and the fact that they're surrounded with the living paintings, which thistle habitually wanders through to relive the past. this truly is his inner sanctum, his place of utmost comfort... and it may as well be a tomb.

that panel is so creepy when you first see it. just a sense of "ohh jeez, there's a lot to unpack there".

and actually, yeah, it remains creepy from pretty much any angle, but the more you think about it the more it's also tragic.

this is where many of thistle's happiest moments took place. everything he had in that picture is now gone. first he lost their warm regard, then one-by-one their bodies became hollow shells. before the end, none of the people here needed or enjoyed food anymore. the dinner table, as a center of both family life and nutrition, became obsolete.

a line from someone else's excellent post about thistle has stuck in my head ever since i read it: "to eat is to live, but to eat together is to be loved". to me, this is the sentiment and symbolism at the core of everything that happens in dungeon meshi.

it makes this bit all the sadder and more disturbing.

there's several things to note here:

thistle has gone from seated and eating with them as part of the family, to a lonely and ominous figure hovering over delgal's shoulder

eodio is conspicuously absent from view, and his body would have been a husk by now, but yaad says parents, which forces me to assume that they are sitting at the table with eodio's soulless body, hidden under yaad's speech bubble

they're not actually eating anything.

those plates are empty. you could assume that they've already finished eating, maybe, but yaad refers to it as sitting around the dinner table. in fact, he compares it to what he's currently doing; sitting at the dinner table watching the touden party eat, not eating anything himself.

it paints a pretty grim picture. for some time even after the fantasy had fallen apart, even after there was no need or desire to eat, they kept gathering around the dinner table. at that point, i'd guess only so as not to provoke thistle's wrath.

but even that last happened a long, long time ago.

this is a callback to what senshi said in the golden kingdom: the reason the people keep maintaining their fields and silverware and so forth is that they need to do so in order to stay sane.

paradoxically, the dinner table is the most striking evidence of thistle's insanity, and at the same time, it's the only anchor to sanity he has left.

he kept enforcing the ritual of dinner together long after it lost significance. when even that was impossible- because almost everyone's souls were gone- he kept their bodies at the table anyway. it's fine. it's fine! he's protected them, physically, just like he set out to. they're all still breathing. at a glance it looks like they could wake up and resume dinner at any moment. like this, it's easy to pretend.

isn't that what being a dungeon lord is, at the core of it? rejecting reality, staying in the prison of one's impossible desires. it's just one long game of pretend.

thistle did all this to protect his loved ones. no matter how obsessive and twisted he became in pursuit of that over the years, his core motivation never changed. this is all he has left of that dream: his loved ones' bodies gathered around the locus of their happiest memories together. like this, he can tell himself he's succeeded.

when eodio's body vanished with delgal's soul in it- when he couldn't even have that anymore... well.

i want to reach through the screen and shake him. no, they're not, thistle. THISTLE, NO, THEY'RE NOT! the doll of eodio is the closest thing to him in this panel, underlining the point. when that final illusion was shattered, he became completely unable to cope with reality.

therefore casually forgetting the creepy eodio doll isn't real.

thistle isn't stupid. eodio's body vanished at the same time as delgal's soul. shortly after, more adventurers came pouring in than ever before. deep down, he knows what happened. if he didn't, being confronted with the truth by mithrun wouldn't have made him panic so hard he summoned chimera falin to the first floor.

yet still...

he absolutely can't admit that to himself. he is clinging to the last scraps of the illusion with everything he has.

this is a dungeon lord at the end of desire. this is a lotus-eater machine left running long after its conclusion. this is mithrun lying listlessly in his bed, his replica lover having given up any pretense of being human. the illusion is all that's left. (an illusion is all it ever was.) thistle and the citizens of the golden kingdom- they're ghosts just as much as the ones who wander the dungeon floors. and if it weren't for thistle sealing the lion away, he would've been eaten by it long ago.

Since Skully is a former student in NRC, what is his dorm? I'm not sure which dorm suits him especially he doesn't seem to fit Scarabia and Savanaclaw. Ignihyde has a reputation of introvert students which suits Skully but not with the technology. He also seem to want to follow halloween tradition like Heartslabyul.

The other possibilities is that he was Ramshackle dorm member before it got disbanded or another dorm that was remove years later.

They don’t state Skully’s dorm, just that he graduated hundreds of years ago. At one point in part 5, he is told about which dorms the (SSR) NRC students are from and seems to the name of the school?? But it’s not clear, he just sort of repeats the names of the dorms after the NRC boys say them.

We currently know that Pomefiore is “the oldest dorm”, implying that the other dorms were established later. Fans speculate that the relative age of the dorms is related to the original movie’s release in the real world, but this has yet to be canonized and doesn’t give us in-universe ages. Thanks to Ramshackle falling into disrepair, we also know it’s possible for dorms to fall apart and be forgotten. However, no one seems to know what happened to Ramshackle, meaning whatever led to its disgrace likely happened a LONG time ago. NRC itself has been well-established since Lilia first received his invite 500 years ago.

Since Skully graduated “hundredS of years ago”, the shortest length of time possible would be 200 years ago, but as long as 900-1999 years ago too. (Not over 2000 years ago because then the dialogue may have been “thousands of years ago”.) It should be noted that the Mirror of Darkness only started to see use as a student selection and dorm sorting method 100 years ago (see this post). lI personally think Skully must have attended NRC closer to 200-400ish years ago, due to him not using old offensive terminology like “witch” and “wizard” to refer to mages (terms which seemed to still be in use 500 years ago). He studied at NRC before Crowley was headmaster as well, but we don’t know how long Crowley has been headmaster for exactly… so that doesn’t help us.

This all means it’s possible some dorms didn’t exist in Skully’s time and processes that are common nowadays weren’t in place then. However, it seems like Scarabia, Savanaclaw, and Diasomnia might have been around, since Skully says them. Again though, not clear. If we go with the theory that the dorms’ ages correlate with the irl film release dates and Skully doesn’t recognize Diasomnia, Scarabia, or Savanaclaw, then that means the only dorms around at the time were likely Pomefiore and Heartslabyul.

For the sake of ease, let’s just assume all 7 dorms plus Ramshackle are candidates for Skully. After talking it over with some friends, these are the dorms considered:

Heartslabyul — How strictly the rules are followed varies significantly by dorm leader; Riddle is very stern whereas previous Heartslabyul dorm leaders were not. For Skully, Heartslabyul could have been a fit because of his general whimsical behavior + his sternness when it comes to adhering to his own concept of Halloween.

Pomefiore — His general polite mannerisms remind me a lot of Pomefiore. And again, Skully’s penchant for upholding tradition could also easily slot him here instead of Heartslabyul, since Pomefiore had a stories history. Pomefiore is also the “most likely” dorm for him to be in, since it was around for the longest. Finally, Skully seems to have some knowledge of poisons and potions (a key trait of Pomefiore students) despite being a first year, as he feeds a sleep-inducing drink to Jack. (Bcjssjwhekw It’s also just funny to picture Mr. Crusty Lips and Gap Teeth in the Beautiful Queen’s dorm… Vil would be so mad 💦)

Ignihyde — Skully is very Idia-coded in his general despair, gloom, and Halloweebjness. It was mentioned in the ask that he doesn’t seem to be tech savvy, but I think this could be explained; depending on when Ignihyde was established as a dorm, the technology of “back then” might have been very different than the very modern high-tech version of the dorm we know today. By “ye old day” standards, Skully could be considered up to date. It could also be that his tech skills weren’t mentioned in detail in the story because they weren’t relevant.

Ramshackle — It's possible that Skully was a member of Ramshackle when it was still a dorm. This could explain why Skully gravitates to Yuu in particular and calls them kindred spirits. (However, it also lends to the eerie fan theory that Yuu, too, is dead.) Some fans have also pointed out that in the photo of Skully was saw in the game, he is wearing the same Nightmare Suit that he wore in the book, just without the dark circular lenses. They then speculated that the Nightmare Suit is very close to what Ramshackle dorm uniform's might have looked like. The stitches definitely match the "ramshackle" name, and the colors don't match any other dorm we know of. (In canon, Skully saw the Nightmare Suit in his dreams and recreated it himself; he is quite proud of it.)

Those are all my thoughts for now. Maybe Skully can give us more details when we get his SSR card next Halloween. Until then...!!

Have you ever noticed how Double Cross My Heart, aside from the obvious similarities with Flirting with Disaster, also parallels Parental Bonding somewhat?

The first connection is fairly easy to make. After all, the episode was specifically designed to mirror Flirting with Disaster and Danny's budding relationship with Valerie while Sam stewed in jealousy from the sidelines.

An episode like that is a staple of romance subplots, and arguably a needed one. After all, the Green-Eyed Epiphany, that trope where someone realises their feelings for somebody else because of jealousy, is a classic for a reason, mainly because it works so well.

Double Cross My Heart, despite its flaws, is a classic role reversal where Sam finally got to experience what it was like to have a mutual crush on someone outside of her best friend, and the complications that come with it, while Danny got a taste of what it's like to fear losing your best friend, someone you subconsciously assumed would always be there for you, to somebody else. The fear of watching them close that door and move on from you while all you can do about it is seethe in jealousy because you don't dare admit your feelings out of fear of that ruining everything still.

Again, the similarities with Flirting with Disaster are crystal clear: the new love interest, the jealousy, the suspicious thing going on prompting one of them to spy on the other, the new ship sinking before it could even sail...

However, I think we're sleeping on the fact that it still shares a few parallels with Parental Bonding and Danny's other love interest: Paulina.

Specifically, I'm referring to this exchange from Danny and Sam's argument after he revealed he'd been spying on her and "Gregor".

Danny: Not you! I was spying on Gregor! He's so obviously working with the guys in white! Sam: Oh, so that's it! The only way a boy could like me is if it was a part of a plot to get to you? Huh? Ego much?

Sam wasn't just mad because Danny went behind her back to spy on her date, she was especially hurt because Danny accidentally implied nobody could ever like her for her and would have to have some sort of ulterior motive to show interest instead.

Now, why does that sound so familiar?

Ah, right. Because that's precisely what happened to Danny with Paulina in Parental Bonding. The irony being that he never even found out about it, since it's implied Sam kept it a secret to spare his feelings.

Sam: Hey, Paulina. Nice dress. Paulina: (Turns to her.) Yes, and it goes so nicely with your amulet, don't you think? Sam: My amulet? That's not my-- (Realization of Danny's plan hits her.) Right! Listen...my grandma gave me that amulet, and-- Paulina: Forget it, sweetie. I'm not giving up this trinket or your little boyfriend Danny. Sam: My boyfriend? Ha ha! And they say pretty girls can't be funny. Danny is not my boyfriend. Paulina: He's not? Sam: He's my best friend. Maybe that's why I was so hard on you. I didn't mean to call you shallow. Paulina: What a bummer! I only agreed to go out with him because I thought I was stealing him from you. (Putting amulet around Sam's neck.) Here, take your crummy amulet. (Walking away.) I'm going back inside to dump your dorky friend.

For all of the focus Danny (understandably) receives by virtue of being the protagonist and, hence, most people's target, the reason he ever got a "chance" with Paulina before she fell for the Ghost Boy was precisely because she was using him to get back at Sam for calling her shallow. Nothing more, nothing less.

In other words, he himself was a victim of what he was accusing Gregor of, and he doesn't even realise it!

And while Gregor was significantly nicer to Danny and Tucker (before he blew up at the latter and with it his cover) than Paulina or even Valerie ever were (Valerie has her moments, but since her arc ended up being tied most closely to Danny's, her interactions with Sam and Tucker were far and in between and not always friendly on either side), Danny ended up being right about him. Partly.

Because he indeed was a fake, only he was "just" pretending to have more things in common with Sam than he really did (and the whole false identity thing, which is kind of inexcusable, let's be honest), instead of working for the Guys in White to get to him. And that was that. Gregor was really Elliot and Sam was done with him the moment he was done with Tucker. Because her friends come first.

I suppose this all comes to show that Gregor/Elliot wasn't just a parallel to Valerie for the sake of a mirror episode and a new love triangle. He ended up being a perfect amalgamation of both of Danny's love interests outside of Sam. He genuinely liked Sam (like Valerie with Danny), but he was still being dishonest about it (like Paulina).

HOWEVER. his grandma FORCES him to wear it ALL THE TIME cuz she’s so worried about all the money she put into those “pearly whites” going to waste. so he has a more noticeable lisp (than he already did because he had one growing up) because of the metal retainer. which, of course, the socs all poke fun at him for. especially when hes pissing them off.

- personally, i don’t think ace likes melvin back especially with the way tilly and melody make it out to be. it’s just like a teen boy crush (celebrity crush almost really in a sense), so he’s trying to hit her up and she just glares at him before turning away. he would definitely tell sergei about her though and how he finds her attractive.

- very set on ponyboy and melvin parallels. both on the track team, both strained relationship with their older brother, both no parents, etcetc. also both are CHRONIC smokers. but for different reasons. I honestly cannot understand the people hating on your work. I feel like fandoms has been invaded by a wave of purity/moral policy that shouldn't exist anymore. it's even more wild to me knowing you're working on a greek myth, and the greek myths are KNOWN to have many versions. that's the beauty of them in my opinion, the way these authors all wrote their own versions and they passed them to us. I love the fact you picked Ganimedes, and you decided to explore both Zeus and him. And the mystery you keep about your relationship really makes me wonder which take you will follow!

and speaking of take, I really enjoy yours on Zeus. Gods are complex beings, and sure they're problematic (like duh) and bad, and everything but it's funny how people will decide which pick for who. Like everybody love Poseidon but oh boy, he can be as bad as Zeus people. So yeah, I am actually excited to read the way you're gonna write him! I don't hate Zeus, sure he does seem one of the "worse" when reading most of the myths, but my favorite thing is the way you can love one god in one story, and hate him in another. they're immortal beings. they're not just black and white. so I happen to enjoy when authors write Zeus as more than just a big bad villain. But I also enjoy when they just don't make him a "sweet lovely daddy".

Oh by the way, I didn't know the version of Metis abusing him and I'll have to look into it! We had a more "feminist" vision of her myth in my class, so it's not something that was talked about hmm.

Also, my bad for saying he died. It was a sum up because of him turning into a constellation. I cannot say we studied this myth so unfortunately I don't have sources to help you on it! It's assumed he lives on forever young but the fact he turns into a constellation is why people think he died?

About the hate... People re affraid (artists have to much power kkkkk) and we live in a time that you need to share your opnion to get validation. In my case, they need to say that Zeus is bad and hate on him and me so they know they re on the rigth side and have good morals. And even after all this, I think its a good thing they just warning people, that way I can get to my real target that can enjoy characters more complex that re not good or evil, but mess up beings (that includes Ganimedes). And even if people in the end critizied my aproach, its also fine, I dont claim to be perfect and just hope that even to the mad ones, they feel inspired to create their version as well. I think they forgot that, like, they can have their version and will be as valid as mine, dosent matter the story.

(I really enjoy everything about Ganymede, if people go and do their versions, its a plus to me! More about him is best for me heheh. Harrow the Ninth audiobook, Act 2

John somehow knows that Harrow's parents are dead before she tells him any of her secrets, I think I mentioned it before, but I'm still wondering about it. He didn't bring it up as if he thought it was a secret, either, but he did address the letter at the beginning of Gideon the Ninth to them. So he must have only learned of this somehow after he sent that letter, right?

When talking about how Harrow's parents harnessed the thanergy from the deaths of the 200 children, he says that they "committed resurrection" and then goes on to say that he also "committed resurrection" using the same language, again talking about there being a "price". That's a funny way to talk about something that's supposed to be literally the best and most holy thing ever in this religion. I'm wondering again if there was also something horrific about the Resurrection itself that only John knows about. We don't actually get to see it happen in Nona - was there some reason he didn't want to show Harrow that part of the story? How much worse could it get?

John's response to Harrow's story about the 200 children, where he says that Harrow and her parents are completely absolved and that it's his sin now seems extremely Christian/Jesus-based to me, but it kind of sounds like he's just saying that because that's his only reference for what a god does. I can't tell if we're meant to take this as something genuine that really puts Harrow's mind at ease, or if it's like his later reaction to her story about opening the Tomb where it was clearly the wrong thing for him to say

I like the Alecto voice. A genuinely deep female voice? I'm here for it. I think there have been a few snatches of dialog in it previously, but this is the first part where she says something longer

Harrow tells Alecto that she is afraid of John - I wonder if this is just because she's afraid of what he'll do when she tells him about the Tomb, or if it's something else

When Cytherea's body is first mentioned in this part, it says that something about it troubled Harrow, but that she just assumed it was schizophrenia. Harrow could sense Wake's hatred of her when Wake was trapped in the sword - since Wake is now in Cytherea's body, I guess she is sensing the same thing

John's voice is actually growing on me. Ortus's is not. I'm really enjoying listening to Magnus and Abigail's voices though, I still stand by what I said that it would have been more accurate to give them posh accents, but I'm glad she gave them the Welsh accent instead, because it's very pleasant to listen to

I'm again noting that they're talking about the hugeness of Number Seven like it's a black hole or something, and saying things about how it would leave "flattened galaxies" in its wake, but the dimensions they give for it are only the size of Neptune or Uranus, which are huge, but they're not flattening any galaxies

G1deon claims to want Gideon's sword - I had forgotten about that. I don't think it was ever resolved why, was it? Aside from previously containing Wake, there isn't anything particularly special about the sword, and at this point Wake has transferred to Cytherea and he has no way of knowing that the sword used to belong to Gideon or anything about who Gideon was. Maybe there are still residual bits of Wake left in the sword? The Sleeper has the sword with her in the River bubble, and there was that scene where Pyrrha addressed Harrow as if she were Wake. I wonder if that means that Wake is not actually completely gone even as of the end of Nona and some part of her is still hanging out in Gideon's sword

I can't remember right now if Dulcinea's and Protesilaus's voices are the same as Cytherea's and Protesilaus's were back in Gideon the Ninth, but they do at least sound similar to what I remember. I think it would be better if Protesilaus sounded more like an Arthurian knight, but honestly this is fine

If so, that makes sense that Wake wouldn't trigger it, since she's not a necromancer and I would guess just being a revenant isn't an inherently necromantic state of being, since it's something that happens naturally without needing a necromancer or a thanergenic planet or anything like that

just looking for a bit of advice here.

okay so for some background, i came out to my friend almost a year ago (kind of sort of, i just told her i liked girls as a girl myself) we’re both in school btw. she was completely supportive of me and even defended me against anything remotely homophobic. she was really sweet and understanding and i felt super safe with her. she’s been one of my best friends since middle school and she’s always stuck with me.

recently though, things have been changing. she’s always been a little back and forth with me and our other friends, always choosing who to be nice to in our group that day, it was never all of us. but now, she’s been more cold to just me consistently, ignoring me in big groups, looking me up and down, getting ‘mad’ at me for every reason she can find. it’s just not great. but then out of the blue some days, she acts like im her best friend and she loves me and is so so kind to me. those are the days i feel safe with her again.

but that’s not what’s bothering me the most about her behavior recently. what is, is that she’s been using the f slur a lot, not often directed at people (though i assume its at me when she says “i hate *f slurs* when i do something she doesn’t like) i’ll oftentimes just brush it off and act like she was just making a joke that was actually funny with a little remark back to her. i don’t know if she’s actually homophobic, because she’s really close with some of my gay friends and doesn’t do this to them, also because of her support when i came out.

and i really don’t know what to do about it because i love her friendship when she wants to give it to me, but what she’s doing is starting to really hurt me. i’ve talked to my best friend (who is amazingly kind and has also experienced this friend’s fake side) about some of this but i just don’t think she’d understand how deeply this hurts me

So what your friend is doing is NOT okay. Using the f-slur in that way is absolutely homophobic and could be considered a crime depending on your location. Now, I'm not saying you should call the police or anything. There's obviously nuance with the word- some queer people have chosen to reclaim it, and there is a huge amount of ignorance with people outside of the community. However, your friend is deeply in the wrong.

I think the first thing I would push you to do, though, is talk to your friend. I know it can be intimidating to address conflict like this head-on, but it seems like you do care for this friend, so I think you should at least try to tell her that these and other actions make you upset and make you feel unsafe. Right now, there's the very small chance that she's unaware, so we don't know if she's hurting you on purpose. Her reaction will be a huge indicator of whether or not it's worth it to stay friends. An ignorant but well-meaning person might say, "oh my god, I had NO idea, I'll really work to do better!" and then actually do so. But if she doubles down or tells you you're being too sensitive, I would urge you to reconsider that friendship. A 'friend' who is willing to intentionally do something that hurts you isn't really a friend.

Remember too that even if someone doesn't understand WHY something is hurtful, a person who cares will still make an effort to feel comfortable. So even if she doesn't fully understand why you dislike some of her actions, as long as your requests are reasonable, she should still try to do better. (Asking her to not use a hateful slur is EXTREMELY reasonable.)

You have the right to set boundaries and ask for respect and if people don't like that, they aren't worth your energy or friendship.

One of the original inspirations for Bottom was Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot, which Rik and Ade both loved and thought was funny. It was one of the things they bonded over at uni, and the two of them got to star in a run of it in the early '90s (again, with Christopher Ryan).

There were three series of Bottom from 1991-1995, totalling at 18 episodes. All episodes were available on Dailymotion the last time I checked - in fact, I have a post somewhere on this blog with links to them, though it may very well be outdated by now. If you have a mooch around online, you should be able to find them.

The reason I'm guessing you mean Bottom is because Richie Richard and Eddie Hitler live together in a (disgusting) flat in Hammersmith, and there are some episodes set entirely within this horrid hovel. However, Filthy, Rich and Catflap also sees Richie Rich and Eddie Catflap sharing a (not quite as disgusting) flat, but these characters were a bit younger - and, to be honest, Bottom is the more highly regarded of the two sitcoms, though I don't think FR&C is anywhere near as bad as some critics made out.

Rik and Ade made five live stage shows for Bottom (Bottom Live) between 1993-2003. In fact, the fifth Bottom Live was the last substantial work they did together. All five of these have been available on YouTube for some years, so I assume they still are. I personally just slightly prefer the sitcom (or maybe I'm just jealous I can't go and see Bottom Live 😂), and I think a general rule of thumb is the quality does decline a little across the five (apologies to my comedy gods, although I think Ade might agree with me), but they are all absolutely worth a watch. Rik and Ade break character in them from time to time, and they're allowed to say fuck.

They also made a Bottom film in 1999 called Guest House Paradiso, which features Simon Pegg. Rik and Ade play the same characters, but now they run an appalling hotel on the Isle of Wight and their surnames are different (which Ade acknowledged when I went to see him touring with his autobiography was inexplicable). The film is not for the weak of stomach, certainly not for anyone with emetophobia, and unfortunately it does suffer from the curse of most sitcom movies apart from Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa in that it doesn't quite translate. To be fair, they didn't have a massive budget, and it happened only a year after Rik's accident (they were both meant to direct it, but Ade took on full directing duties as a result of this). Still, it's not unfunny, and I think it's available on Dailymotion; if you like Bottom, you should give it a watch. I wonder what a Bottom film set in the original world of the sitcom would've been like...

Oops, I am once more in a “Behind the Scenes” mood, let’s see what there is to talk about... Well we talked about Dave Miller last timed, so let’s talk about the dark side of that coin.

Now let’s talk about the funny rabbit man.

When Dave was finalized, there was this debate on when/if Springtrap would appear and how. After all it sorta showed that Dave finally wrangled control so how would I even get him to appear? Well that is when the Mob Boss Freddy arc began. In Chapter 10 there is a small little detail that shows Elizabeth and Dave walking past the building Freddy and his Goons were ransacking, and if you notice REAL close, you can see remnant falling from the sky.

Now, where does this land? Well it lands right on the Springtrap arm. This led to the bit with Michael and the now reawoken arm doing some hijinks for the rest of that chapter. 

(This is fanart from Ooftroop btw, and it is a joke that works on multiple levels because it’s a recreation that was show to them out of context AND they stopped reading TSP at chapter 9, the chapter BEFORE this scene happens in. Only reason I am sharing this is because when else am I gonna show this in any natural context?)

But yeah, soon Armtrap hooks himself up to the one mafia robot and takes control of it, and then a new problem occurs. What is his personality like? I mean he is evil, obviously, but what kind of evil is he? If William Afton is the mad genius, and Dave Miller is the guilty aspect, what should Springtrap be?

And thankfully the Silver Eyes trilogy gave me an idea, in The Fourth Closest there is a bit where Springtrap (or well, a Springtrap illusion thing, fuck fnaf lore sometimes man) where he is singing and dancing as he mocks Jessica.

That, is beautiful. Springtrap is a killer, but he is also fucking EXTRA with it. He ain’t just gonna kill you, he is going to put on a show for no one but himself for the hell of it. And as such the pieces sorta fell together, as he is the only character that gets musical numbers in the damn comic (even in Nightmare Countdown where there are other “singers” he gets the most dynamic one as the judge/worm), much to peoples confusion.

I scare people very easily. But another thing I wanted Springtrap to be is, for lack of a better word, wrong. Like even for all the Mushroom Mutants, Soul Dozer, and Shadow Kings, something about him is different. And the most obvious example is for him to be the only one that has the sense of awareness of the 4th wall, like others may look at the “camera” in disbelief, but he takes it a step beyond and has jabs at it. Not to mention him being unique with having colored text unlike everyone else usually does.

Another thing is that, while he may be the big bad of the trio (Him, Freddy, and Baby), he had to be used correctly. He may be fun to write, but too much of a good thing can make a person sick of it. So after the first music number, he mostly takes a working in the shadows role as the story focuses on Freddy and Baby, with him only coming up here and there for a goof or gag to remind the audience that he is still there.

And then, with Baby was defeated, it was time for him to take control, and one thing I feel bad about is that I think I was a bit too vague about how he did somethings. Frankly I don’t think that there are even any good way to describe it even right now, but to put it bluntly. Springtrap had Freddy send a message to Baby, who was asked to put an emergency thing of remnant on the side incase she fails. This side remnant would then be used to temporarily give Springtrap enough juice to wiggle as a bit of Freddy’s endo wires.

And he would inch his way to someplace they wouldn’t suspect, and temporarily hijacked Lefty’s head.

And then, as we saw in Grand Return, he was able to get himself a new body.

Now, I won’t lie... Another poor writing aspect on my end, relied on ALOT of coincidences for that to work. But I will say, it did lead to the best character ever, Paradox Springtrap.

This fucker is FUN, he is evil, he is wacky, and he is overly dramatic. Everything during the Springtrap arc was a joy. There is a reason I end up constantly redrawing him, he is just a fun character to have do stuff for. Fuck I wrote a throwaway line saying he “installed the laser vision feature” cause it  was funny, and then said “wait, LETS ACTUALLY HAVE HIM SHOOT LASERS OUT OF HIS EYES CAUSE THIS IS DUMB AND HILARIOUS AND AMAZING”

AND EVEN THEN HIS BULLSHIT DID NOT STOP, BECAUSE AS IT TURNS OUT HE HAD A SECRET FINAL FORM WITH THE REMNANT MONSTER HE TURNS INTO AT THE END!

And as a little treat, Remnant Springtrap has an entire thing I did that saves me the work of writing everything and gives you some more stuff to look at.

I don’t know if there is a proper term to call this type of remnant, my brain just defaults to calling it “Dark Remnant” but that is kinda dumb, meanwhile far as I can tell only kind of Remnant besides regular Remnant is “Shadow Remnant” but that is from Fnaf AR and no one cares about Fnaf AR. :V

Another thing I liked was how he was defeated, not only by having Dave throw Springtrap for a loop and do something he thought he wasn’t going to do, but also how he suffers something worse than death, I mean he’s died like what? 2-3 times already, give or take? And since one of the main gimmicks of The Springlock Paradox was the dimensional device, it only made sense that it would be the thing that sealed his fate by trapping him in a place that doesn’t exist.

And we’ll never have to worry about him ever again!

ITS MY BOIIIIIIII I've always been a Raphie girlly and the 03 series is what sold me on him. I grew up with the 90's movies of course but the series gave me more stories and such and Raph was just the stand out for me. He has a very dynamic personality and in truth I related to him a lot as a kid XD Also he was the red one uwu and as a kid the red/pink characters tended to be my favorite alone

And my revisit into TMNT just reenforced that love maybe made it worse who knows XD This turtle has a prime spot in my brain now ;3; I just love Raphael the most he's an abrasive jerk but he very clearly loves and worries for what little family he has his love is bigger than his anger uwu.

✍ Favorite thing about writing the muse?

hmmm the rude and brash behavior I'd have to say. Raphael is a very blunt character he isn't one to really hold back on what he has to say. When something makes him mad he states as much. this dose tend to lead to Raph having a very friendly teasing nature to himself as well. Comes out a lot around Casey of course it is funny when he dose it to Leo, because sometimes he is quick to say sorry after.

I also am a fan of the tough guy with a soft side. And Raph is just that all around constantly. Which of course the usual examples the blind women and the kid. But he shows this around Casey even trying to stop him and insisting Casey's a good guy. He shows a lot of his softness to Don and Mikey even quick to come to their aid or take hits or express worry when something happens to them. heck when they followed Splinter he was quick to take the blame when he could just like Leo.

👀Favorite thing about the muse’s appearance?

I know the 03 turtles dont have much to set them apart in terms of desing. So in truth this is more on the way he is expressed more than anything.

I love that Raph has a much darker color pallet it fits well with the red for his mask as well. It really sets a lot of his scenes well since Raph has the habit of running to start fights alone or hanging around the city alone even. So the more dynamic lighting really suites those scene with him looking all extra angry. I also like how all his expression tend to look like a shit eating grin he's just ready to say something snarky.

I don't really have alternate versions of my Raph, I mean there is SAINW Raph sure but that's a cannon alternate universe that I haven't really gotten to dive into.

Closest you get is depending on the Alt version with Casey I do write Raphael different so to fit the tone of that universe.

cowboy casey au: This Raph is a bit more open seeing how Raph's whole family had no where to go. Leo was badly hurt not waking up yet this human was kind enough to offer them shelter out of nothing but kindness. So, Raphs more willing too be more emotionally open and available to Casey. Which is why he kind of just goes with it when its clear Casey got a thing for him too.

killer casey au: This Raph I write far more trusting and naive which is why he so easily falls for Casey's lies and tales he sees no real reason to not trust Casey. Casey always been good to his family and I say this version of Raphael has had feeling for Casey for a long time. Honestly part of me wants to claim him and Casey may have had some romantic moments even before ya know Raph found out the truth about Casey u-u but hes still navie enough to think he can somehow get Casey to change, and to even love him still uwu

Look Raph and Casey friendship will forever be speical to me and I always love that friendship. Someone Raph will stick his neck out for someone who is never annoyed by Casey who can handle him just as he is. These two vibe with each other so well that Raph even just assumes Casey will take his side on things and when he don't? Raph knows hes in the wrong then. lets be honest Raph a bit more selfish compared to Casey but you see him get more caring after befriending Casey just how you see Casey learn there are better ways to work through his own anger by being friends with Raph.

mmmm Id have to go with everything that we have set up between Raph and Donnie. I love the idea of them being twins basically esp for the 03 series it just seems very well fitting for the brains and braw anger management duo. I love the whole of their childhood just kind of showing how close they were when they were younger. Even if they fought like Raph liking to steal Donnie's mermaid doll and upsetting him because of it. But also the like little things that sort of flesh out the dynamic between them as they got older.

Like how they both have a natural like second nature habit of going to the other about nearly everything. Donnie tends to share his happiest moments with Raph first even confides in Raph about things. Like when telling Raph about wanting to ask Von to marry him. Raph always found a comfort in being around Donnie when upset. The twin sense Raph knowing where Donnie is no matter what ;3;

Not really his backstory but I do find it cute that in a sense Raph and Don befriended the others s/o before they met them. Donnie got a fork from Casey and Raph of course was the one to bring Von to the lair ;3;

Raphael's eyes are green uwu and he never fully liked them he did like that Donnie had green in his own eyes and still dose since they turned red. Which has always kept him from fulling hate them. But he liked them even more when Casey told him his favorite color was green.

Raphael's favorite food is cereal, okay this is a cannon thing in truth and i have implemented it into my other Raphs. But I say it's something hes caught eating a lot cause its easy to much on especially after he's trained or trained on his own. He tends to like sweeter cereal over grain cereal.

He dose drink coffee but he likes to have it sweet or least with milk since creamer is more of a luxury. He tends to make coffee for Donnie when he wants to just chill with his twin in the lab well Donnie's working.

Raph likes to read science fiction , I like to think this influenced by Donnie. He tends to read in Don's lab cause no one gonna bother him there. Also I like to think Donnie taught him how to read and it was a science fiction book, (Jurassic park) which is why he likes that genre most.

Raphael likes to go skating with Casey and Summer, he still gets nervous about being on frozen lakes but he loves that its something they can do together.

Casey's far more likely to call Raph nicknames mostly 'babe' of course (which Raph loves and dose get up set if Casey hasn't called him it once that day XD) sometimes Raphie, Raph when they are alone calls him Casi. (Cas-ee)

Raphael loves the docks, he loves to stare out to the ocean and just take in the sound of the waves and the smell of the salty air. It often helps clear his mind but also it's what his own head feels like uwu

I feel like Raph is far more observant then given credit for. I feel he has a habit of study people. Not how Mikey picks up on emotions of others, Raph just knows habits. He's often the one to react when leo's not acting like Leo, or notices a change with Splinter usual routine, he can tell when someone takes his joke as a joke or if it's too far and will even try and wave it off

I feel most of Raph's future has already be set up if I'm honest. As known him and Casey adopt Summer and start up a family of thier own. Raph moves in with Casey permanently. He's able to care for Summer during the day before she reaches school age. somewhere around all that they got married. yada yada.

I like to think Raph dose mange to get a job though, works by the shipyard so it's cold so hes able to cover up with no question. Cause well he feels it unfair for Casey to be the only one bring in money.

But mostly he'll spend the rest of his life with Casey, married really only just through them referring to each other as husband. Living the family life I think he also helps Ariel a lot with her own issues since he knows where she is coming from with all of that.

I mean being a fan of Raph im sure I have many XD Firstly I don't think Raph is stupid, Raph in a few episodes where the turtles are not on earth often manages to secure a vehicle or even learns how to use other types of weapons when he doesn't have his own. He might not be on Don's level but hes really not dumb.

Raph can be a jerk but he isn't a jerk. Raphs brash behavior dose sell that jerk ideal but seeing how he approaches things I feel proves otherwise. Like how he is with April when they first meet her sure hes stand offish at first but once he warms up hes very nice towrds her.

Raph is a bit of a introvert. It's rare that he takes to others like Casey.

first, a bit of context. in October 2024 Mass Effect: The Boardgame - Priority: Hagalaz (the title is reported inconsistently and i find the number of colons funny) goes up for pre-orders. it features beloved characters from the original ME trilogy, specifically those introduced in the first game, and is set during ME3.

video game discourse and culture war nonsense being what they are, people immediately notice the characters have their pronoun sets on their cards, and get mad. some fanboys get more specific, taking issue with Liara T'Soni's pronouns reported as she/they, and accusing the boardgame designer of not knowing original game's lore (never mind that Liara literally says she is not a woman in a key conversation in the first game, and that her first pronoun is still she).

the game gets review-bombed on boardgamegeek.com, its rating dismal and constantly changing (currently under 5/10 - very low for the site). the website tries to fight back, some fake reviews get deleted, long-time forum members get banned and bitch about it on twitter, it's a whole thing. the creator calls out the "anti-woke" bullshit on twitter and asks people who actually played the game to legitimately rate it, gets hate.

the biggest czech boardgaming site, zatrolene-hry.cz, also has discussion threads for upcoming games, and an article about the drama gets linked there. the discussion is mostly about how silly the whole thing is, plus BGG.com's response, with a couple self-identified "anti-DEI" movement members complaining about being oppressed by minorities. until:

an employee of the Czech branch of Asmodée (which has been announced to eventually publish the translated version in Czechia) weighs in, saying that the Czech version will absolutely not have pronouns if he can help it. translation by me bellow:

if you're familiar with Slavic languages, you might think he's saying the pronouns are redundant information in a heavily gendered language, where the character's pronouns can be inferred from basically any statement made about them, or maybe that he knows from experience translations often need to condense the text to fit the same information on a card the same size as the original. nope!

he doubles down when questioned by other users, quickly devolving into overt transphobia, including a remixed attack helicopter joke (which most users don't get and mock the person who calls it out).

Could you please elaborate on what led to this decision? Is it an attempt to appease, or fear of upsetting someone, or some kind of power play, or what? As in, "We are Asmodee CZ and if you insist on it, we won't publish it. Don't you know, we know best what makes sense for your product and what does not." Do I get it or am I missing something? The pronouns make sense to me, because if I'm unfamiliar with the source material, then by just looking at images of aliens I won't easily recognize whether they're a he, she, it, or they.

I don't understand the question. Just as thousands of board games across the world over the last X years managed without pronouns, Mass Effect will too. The pronouns have absolutely no purpose there. Liara is a female-looking character, why should there be anything written under her? If you want, play the game with the feeling she identifies as a tram.

in reaction to someone assuming the decision carries over from the video game's localization (i don't see how? not like there's an in-game codex of characters with their pronouns?):

The translation is done by the PC game's translator. He pointed out the pronouns long before the internet shitstorm and we immediately agreed not to use them. So if anybody here is concerned about some kind of political decision, this was a purely practical one, quite a while ago. And it has been shown to be correct. Careful with the (lore-justifiable) identification of Liara as a woman, someone could have an aneurysm.

Slovak user Daqan, who criticized the transphobia on display, got a now-deleted response (the comment allegedly recommended seeking mental help, though i don't have the original text):

the forum then turns into a long, day+ spanning discussion about censorship, and whether Daqan is the real villain in all this. also arguing about whether the character who says, out loud, at multiple points, that she is not a woman, is actually a woman because she is referred to as "she" in a 2007 video game.
