out of the two, sergei had always been the one who ended up “taking care” of melvin. its just what he did. whether it was a bad high, tending to his wounds because he just had to go out and fight everybody he could even if they were bigger, the first time they got drunk and he was puking up his guts, it could be something as silly as lending him a shirt. it was always him. and yeah, melvin took care of sergei as well but not in the same way — rather fighting battles for him and sticking up for the other when he couldn’t find the words.

so when melvin starts to reject sergei’s help he isn’t sure what to do. they end up arguing, but it doesnt take long for melvin to start wrestling the other — grabbing his arm as it tried to dab clean a wound and tackling him to the ground. its all out of pure frustration. he doesn’t want his help, he doesn’t need it — he doesn’t deserve it. he doesnt let up until he sees tears tracking down sergei’s cheeks

and if i say melvin and sergei codependent best friends what then

- melvin and sergei who are actually STRIVING to be as tough and cool as the older soc boys — especially melvin with his older brother trip, but he would never admit it. purposefully acting annoyed when his gramma makes him go out with trip because he needs someone to “watch him.” he’s shoving his hands in his pockets, puffing out his cheeks, and is wearing the most ridiculously annoyed face ever while they’re tossing around a football, but in actuality is secretly excited. sergei somehow always finds his way in to join the group because if melvin’s there he wants to be there. of course though what they percieve as cool is actually damaging and the typical soc stereotype/beliefs. the pair pick up on the older socs antics, bad habits, and other “hobbies” (fighting, rumbles, jumping greasers, drinking, smoking) so they’re actually doomed by the narrative to fail and end up another product of the cycle cherry sings about in hopeless war. ong bob and paul in training
