Never got around to asking her/the difference between weeds and herbs and flowers
the part of Katy Kirby's "Juniper" that makes me want to write SW EU (Legends) [related] fic I most certainly 100% don't have the background for BUT that "Which are flowers? Which are weeds?" Vergere quote has always struck me (albeit without its actual context) in a different way than it seems to be popularly perceived, possibly because of my very casual background with like... ecology and er... following people like @headspace-hotel
#i had an elementary teacher with ophidiophobia (fear of snakes) but I swear that despite and perhaps due to that#she organized like zoo programs where we were taught that snakes are normal important parts of the ecosystem#and I'm pretty sure she also brought up “creepy crawlies” like bats and spiders in a way that indicated: valuable to the circle of life!#(also Ms. Frizzle! on tv and in books)#which is animals but like! you do not have to follow Pretty Garden™ Opinions!#you can accept that native wildflowers ARE desirable plants#you can agree with science that eg Bradford pears are invasive and harmful even if they are sort of vaguely attractive#sorry for the tag headspace-hotel but I think you are an outstanding tumblr denizen#... actually I found a blog essay examining Vergere through the course of various books#and it sounds like my quick reaction to the quote makes some sense within the NJO books...

Nominations Open
Nominations are open, and they'll stay open through 11:00am UTC on 2 November - you can see a countdown timer at this link. You're allowed to nominate up to 10 fandoms, with up to 10 relationships per fandom. This year we have imported a subset of the tagset from Holly Poly 2023 via our pre-nominations phase to try and reduce the workload for us mods - please make sure to check the tagset before you nominate a ship to see if it is already included in the tagset. We recommend expanding all tagset categories before searching the page for any ships since some fandoms may not be in the section you expect due to us using slightly different fandom tags in some cases.
The tag set is located here: https://archiveofourown.org/tag_sets/21262
You can also view this year's tagset on AO3 Automagic app at the link below to more easily search for ships included in it already, but it needs a re-scrape requested periodically to ensure it's up to date: https://autoao3app.fandom.tools/#/holly_poly_2024/tagset
In order to nominate a relationship, simply click the Nominate button located in the top right-hand corner of the tag set. If you do not have an account on the AO3, please let us know, and we should be able to get you an invite. On a similar note, if you have any questions, or if you're nominating something that you think might be confusing, please either post a comment to this post or send an e-mail to [email protected] if you'd rather keep it private.
For relationships that do not already have canonical tags, please nominate them in alphabetical order by last name (and, if they don't have a last name or multiple characters share a last name, then by first name). For example: Anders/Fenris/Bethany Hawke/Carver Hawke/Isabela/Merrill/Varric Tethras/Aveline Vallen, or Astrid Beck/Eadwulf Grieve/Essek Thelyss/Caleb Widogast, or Sirius Black/Remus Lupin/Nymphadora Tonks.
Please don't panic if we add some type of disambiguation to relationships that you nominate. Especially for ones where the same characters fall under different fandoms (various comic fandoms, movie/TV show vs. book fandoms, etc.), as doing so helps keeps tags from wandering to fandoms where they don't belong.
This is an exchange for romantic and/or sexual relationships, not friendships, so make certain to nominate relationships that use a "/" rather than a "&". If you want to request that a relationship be asexual/queerplatonic/etc., then that's something to include in your optional details when signing up.
Please make sure to read through the extra information below as some fandom disambiguations have changed since last year. In general, when nominating a fandom or ship consider whether there are multiple sources/versions and how to nominate in a way that makes it clearest which version you want.
Please nominate original works under Original Work for the fandom.
Please nominate crossovers under Crossover - Fandom for the fandom. List characters in alphabetical order by last name (and, if they don't have a last name or multiple characters share a last name, then by first name), and please put the fandom or a clear abbreviation of it after the character name. For example: Thirteenth Doctor (Doctor Who)/Ms. Frizzle (Magic School Bus)/Mary Poppins (Mary Poppins), or Female Hawke (Dragon Age)/Male Hawke (Dragon Age)/Female Shepard (Mass Effect)/Male Shepard (Mass Effect), or Hal Jordan (Green Lantern 2011)/Ryan Reynolds (RPF)/Wade Wilson (Deadpool Movieverse). If you have any crossover ships that hit the 100 character tag length limit, you can abbreviate the fandom names or leave out surnames to condense it down so long as it will still be clear which characters in the fandom and which fandoms you mean. If there's any ships that are still difficult to do that for or you're not sure if it will be clear to us/others, do let us know the ship by either commenting here or emailing us and we'll try to figure out a way to condense it.
Please nominate all relationships involving characters from the MCU movies, Agents of SHIELD, Agent Carter, Hulu Marvel series, Netflix Marvel series, and/or Disney+ Marvel series under Marvel Cinematic Universe. If you nominate a ship with Peter Parker in for MCU we will assume you mean Tom Holland's Peter Parker unless stated otherwise. If you want to nominate a ship with one of the other Peter Parkers in for the MCU please use "Peter Parker (SM 2002 Tobey Maguire)" or "Peter Parker (TASM 2012 Andrew Garfield)" - you can shorten the fandom disambiguation in the brackets if you run out of character limit but it still needs to be obvious which Peter Parker you mean. For Peter Parker ships in crossover - Fandom you will need to state which Peter you mean in each instance, identified by the specific film or comicsverse, with Tom Holland's version as Peter Parker (MCU).
Please nominate all of the X-Men movies under X-Men (Original Timeline Movies), X-Men (Alternate Timeline Movies), and Deadpool (Movieverse). The Wolverine movies go in Original Timeline. Any relationships featuring characters from movies that fall under different categories should be nominated as a Crossover.
Please nominate Marvel comics under the universe they belong to: Marvel 616, Marvel Adventures, MC2, X-Men Evolution (Comics), etc. If you feel the specific title they're from is complicated enough that it should be listed separately, please either leave a comment or send an e-mail with more information. Characters like America Chavez who are originally from another universe but canonically spend time in a different one can be included as part of relationships requested for either universe.
Please nominate standalone Marvel movies/TV shows such as Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes or X-Men Evolution (Cartoon) separately under the name of the specific movie/show.
Please nominate DC films set in the current movie universe (Man of Steel, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman, Justice League, Aquaman, Shazam!, Birds of Prey, Wonder Woman 1984, and The Suicide Squad) under DC Extended Universe.
Please nominate relationships from various DC comics under DCU (Comics). If you feel the specific title they're from is complicated enough that it should be listed separately, please either leave a comment or send an e-mail with more information.
Please nominate standalone DC movies/TV shows such as Birds of Prey (TV), Gotham, and Smallville separately as individual fandoms.
Please nominate the various DC shows on The CW (Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, Black Lightning, Batwoman, and Superman & Lois) under DC's Arrowverse. Relationships including characters from The Arrowverse as well as from other DC shows like Birds of Prey or Smallville who appear due to crossover events can be nominated under this umbrella fandom, while relationships solely from Birds of Prey, Smallville, and the like should be nominated separately under the name of the show they're from. Crossover relationships featuring characters from other DC shows who do not canonically appear in The Arrowverse, even if other characters from that show do, should still be nominated under Crossovers. If nominating ships where the canonical tag uses "Behrad Tomaz | Behrad Tarazi" please change the character name to one or the other to specify which timeline Behrad you mean.
Please nominate the various cartoons considered part of the DCAU (Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series, The New Batman Adventures, Batman Beyond, Static Shock, The Zeta Project, Justice League, and Justice League Unlimited) under DC Animated Universe (Timmverse).
Please nominate everything set in the Doctor Who universe under Doctor Who (including Big Finish Audios, Class, Sarah Jane Adventures, and Torchwood). For characters that have multiple incarnations, please specify which you mean by number or actor, e.g. "First Doctor" or "The Master (Simm)". If you don't mind which version, please add "(any)" after the character name, e.g. "The Doctor (any)".
Please nominate The Good Wife and The Good Fight under The Good Wife & Related Fandoms.
Please nominate Chicago Med, Chicago Fire, Chicago PD and Chicago Justice under One Chicago.
Please nominate Tolkien fandoms under Middle Earth – J.R.R. Tolkien or Middle Earth (Movies) or The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (TV 2022), depending on whether you want bookverse, movieverse or the new showverse. The Silmarillion would fall under the books. Any relationships featuring a mixture of movie, book or show canon (which would include anything set in the movies but with characters who aren't in them, such as Elladan, Elrohir, Glorfindel, etc.) should be nominated as a Crossover; please specify which characterization you want for any characters who are in more than one of the bookverse, movieverse or showverse, ie. Aragorn (movies)/Elladan/Elrohir.
Please nominate One Piece (TV) separately from One Piece (Anime & Manga).
Please nominate The Wheel of Time (TV) separately from the book fandom Wheel of Time - Robert Jordan.
Please nominate Arcane: League of Legends (Cartoon 2021) separately from League of Legends (Video Games).
Please nominate Percy Jackson and the Olympians (TV) separately from Percy Jackson & The Olympians (Movies) and the book fandom of Percy Jackson and the Olympians - Rick Riordan. If you want to nominate a ship from a specific book series please add the series acronym after the ship details, e.g. (PJO Books), (THOO Books) etc.
Please nominate the Star Trek TV shows (live action or animated) under Star Trek: Classic Timeline and AOS under Star Trek: Alternate Original Series (Movies). For ships that include characters that are in both Star Trek: The Original Series and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds or Star Trek: Discovery, we will assume the TOS version is meant by default - if you want to specify the SNW version please add "(SNW)" after the character name(s) to differentiate from TOS version, e.g. "Christine Chapel (SNW)/Spock (SNW)/T'Pring (SNW)" and for Discovery please add "(Disco)" after the character name. If the ship has a mix of TOS and SNW/Discovery character versions, please add SNW or Disco or TOS in brackets after each of the character names that need clarification. Any relationships featuring characters from both the original timeline and AOS (other than those who canonically are in both of them like Spock) should be nominated under Crossover - Fandom
Please nominate Stargate SG-1, Stargate: Atlantis, and Stargate Universe under Stargate - All Media Types.
Please nominate Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel: The Series, and the assorted spinoffs (including Fray and other comics) under Buffy the Vampire Slayer & Related Fandoms.
Please nominate all of the Dragon Age video games and books under Dragon Age - All Media Types.
Please nominate all of the Mass Effect video games and books under Mass Affect - All Media Types.
Please nominate anything Star Wars related under Star Wars - All Media Types.
Please nominate Game of Thrones (TV) and A Song of Ice and Fire - George R. R. Martin and House of the Dragon (TV) as separate fandoms.
Please nominate Wiedźmin | The Witcher (Video Game), The Witcher (TV), and Wiedźmin | The Witcher Series - Andrzej Sapkowski as separate fandoms. Use the appropriate names for characters based on the source rather than the longer canonical tags that include multiple names (ie, for the TV show it would be Geralt of Rivia/Jaskier/Yennefer of Vengerberg rather than the canonical tag of Geralt z Rivii | Geralt of Rivia/Jaskier | Dandelion/Yennefer z Vengerbergu | Yennefer of Vengerberg or for the video games it would be Dandelion/Eskel/Geralt of Rivia rather than the canonical tag of Eskel/Geralt z Rivii | Geralt of Rivia/Jaskier | Dandelion).
Please nominate anything related to Once Upon a Time or Once Upon a Time in Wonderland under Once Upon a Time (TV).
Please separate anything related to the Power Rangers television shows under Power Rangers (TV), the comics under Power Rangers (Comics), and the more recent(ish) movie under Power Rangers (2017).
Please nominate anything set in Exandria under Critical Role (Web Series), including Exandria Unlimited and one shots such as The Screw Job or The Darrington Brigade. Non-Exandria one shots such as Call of Cthulhu: Shadow of the Crystal Palace should be nominated under their own names. The Legend of Vox Machina (Cartoon) should also be nominated separately.
Please nominate Yu-Gi-Oh! fandoms under their individual series names, unless you have ships that cross several series in which case you can nominate under Yu-Gi-Oh! - All Media Types.
Please nominate relationships featuring characters from various Disney/Pixar animated titles (ie, Jasmine/Megara/Mulan or Jafar/Maleficent/Ursula) under Disney - All Media Types. Relationships featuring characters from a single Disney and/or Pixar movie can be nominated under the specific movie/movie series name (ie, Cobra Bubbles/David Kawena/Nani Pelekai would be nominated under Lilo & Stitch (2002)).
Please nominate Teen Wolf (TV) or Teen Wolf: The Movie (2023) under Teen Wolf (Jeff Davis) - if you don't want the movie events mentioned for your gift please mention it as Do Not Want in request details when signing up. Other Teen Wolf movie ships should be nominated under Teen Wolf (1980s Movies). Anything crossing over the Jeff Davis verse with the original movies should be nominated under Crossover - Fandom.
Please nominate both original movie and book Harry Potter ships under Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling but ships from the Fantastic Beasts movie series should be nominated separately under Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (Movies). Anything crossing over both should be nominated under Crossover - Fandom. Please nominate both Leverage (2008) and Leverage: Redemption (2021) under Leverage (US TV) and Leverage (2019) under Leverage (Korea).
For what was previously Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, this has now been separated out into the following three fandoms in our tagset. Final Fantasy VII (Video Game 1997), Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth (Video Games 2020-2024), and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. Anything crossing over two or more Final Fantasy fandoms should be nominated under Crossover - Fandom.
For what was previously Mortal Kombat (Video Games) this has now been separated out into Mortal Kombat (Video Games 1992-2020) and Mortal Kombat (Video Games 2023-). Please nominate the Avatar: The Last Airbender cartoon, as well as the related ATLA comics, under Avatar: The Last Airbender (Cartoon 2005), the new live action TV series under Avatar: The Last Airbender (Netflix) and the live action movie under The Last Airbender (2010).
Please note that while [Specific Character]/[Specific Group of Characters] is acceptable as a nomination, [Specific Character]/Everyone is too broad.
For example: Lex Luthor/Lionel Luthor's Board Members is acceptable because "Lionel Luthor's Board Members" involves a finite group of people. The same goes for Voldemort/Death Eaters, Shipwrecked Sailor/Mermaids, and Peter Pan/Lost Boys. While Carol Danvers/Anyone and Everyone or Jack Harkness/Everyone He's Ever Met are understandable, they're too broad because it could essentially involve an infinite number of people.
If you have any questions about a relationship you want to nominate that might potentially be too broad, leave a comment or send an e-mail.
RPF characters must be 18+ at the time of nomination. Significant others/children/etc. of public figures are not permitted unless they are public figures in their own right. For smaller RPF fandoms, providing information/links to help us verify the characters are eligible would be appreciated and will speed up RPF noms.
If you have any questions about what fandom to use when making nominations, or any other questions in general - or if you find any errors in the tagset - please feel free to leave a comment on this post. You can also send an e-mail to [email protected].

A PJO Headcannon
Idea time:
So, I was reading this fic (it's really good so far btw) and the author was thinking of making Nancy a demigod, and who her godly parent should be, and I thought of Laverna.
Laverna, the Roman Goddess of thieves, cheats, and the Underworld. She was believed to rule Rome's underground with her army of outcasts.
Here I'm thinking that Nancy is just a kid acting out, abandoned by her mom, and being a bully when seeing someone that's like her and has one parent (Percy) and taking it out on him. Also, in the books, Rick described Nancy in an unflattering way, which could go with her feeling like an outcast and whatnot.
It's not an excuse to her behavior, but I think it'd actually be pretty cool to give Nancy a bit more of a backstory. Like how some bully's lash out to hurt, so they don't feel the hurt themselves. And we only knew Nancy as a 12 year old.
But what if when Nancy grows older and learns of her heritage, she doesn't join the Legion like many demigods, but ends up forming a group of other outcasts who feel unloved and were thrown out by society.
Backstory:
Nancy wasn't sure how old she was when she knew that her dad didn't love her like other parents loved their kids. Five? Younger? Nancy didn't know, but she knows it's been a fact of her life for a very long time.
But Nancy got by. After all, even if she didn't have her dad's love, she had his money. That's why she went to expensive boarding schools was sent away and wore pristine itchy uniforms.
Nancy grew up around the cold walls and fleating sunlight of dorms and schools, and it was home to her. Moreso than the beach house her dad lives in.
The damp underground smell when the rain soaked the cracked cement and the running tracks dirt was euphoria. While the sea salt smell on her dad was like a smothering perfume on his skin that was a reminder of all the nonexistent hugs and loving caresses she would never have.
And Nancy's mother. Well, as far as Nancy is concerned, she doesn't exist. Ignoring all the times she cried for a parent, a mother, to love her.
Dad called her mom some whore, and left it at that.
Still, sometimes Nancy's dad would say how Nancy was taking after her mother's unappealing beauty.
Her too orange freckles smeared across her face like powdered cheese instead of like glinting bronze or perfectly clear skin.
Ignoring how Nancy actually liked her freckles. She loved cheese because she imagined it was for royalty to be served at balls like the most divine dishes. At least she loved cheese until other kids started making fun of her cheese powder freckles like they were disgusting.
And that's not even touching on Nancy's frizzy red hair. Hair that Nancy thought was like Ms. Frizzle, the most adventurous and brave woman Nancy saw as a kid. The woman that Nancy looked up to and learned from on TV.
But of course, her dad hated her hair. While his hair was brown and straight, her's was a mess. A reminder of her mother.
And all these unapealing beauty marks just added up and up like a neverending pile of stones titering precariously over her, waiting for her to give up and let the stone's fall and crush her under the weight of her ugliness.
Each insult from her dad, from her peers, from adults around her, added more cracks to the stone tower. Her crooked teeth (she thought she looked like a fiercesome pirate), her prominent nose (a good detective always has a big nose), her tallness (she liked being taller than kids her age, made her not feel as small), her squinty eyes (like she was looking to steal something. It's true, she likes shiny things, besides surely they can do without some of their possessesions because they smile so carelessly without a worry).
So yeah, Nancy gets it. She's not attractive, but so what? Because of this, she's learned to use her words and body language to get what she wants. Other kids will use puppy eyes, and she'll call an adult a pervert and pickpocket from the "concerned" adults around her. And guess what? She'll get more than the kid who uses puppy eyes.
But she won't ever get a parent's love.
And now that Nancy's twelve, and going to sixth grade, she knows all the tricks. How to be the top dog at school, and be the teacher's favorite.
She'll surround herself with worshipers, and her heart will finally not feel so empty.
But why?
Why?
Why are there still people ignoring her?
And why does the one boy that smells like sea salt bring tears to her eyes?
It's because he reminded her of her dad. Her dad and that horrible beach house that she desperately tries to forget once school starts again.
And why does that boy, who seems to come from nothing, seem to have such a carefree smile?
No, it's not carefree. Nancy can see that it's strained, like hers.
But why does he still seem so happy?
Is it because of that cripple, Grover?
No, if that was it that Nancy would be happy. After all, she has better, more superior friends.
And yet why isn't she happy like him?
Why?
It makes Nancy furious. Her heart hammers in her chest, and her eyes sting. She clenches her teeth and balls her hands into fists.
What right does that nobody have to be so happy?
Is it because he has a mom that mails him blue cookies and handwritten letters in a cheap tuba ware box?
That he has a parent that loves him unlike her?
It doesn't matter because Nancy will do whatever it takes to wipe that happy smile off of Percy's face if it's the last thing she does.
Nancy's face burns bright red with pure retribution when it never seems to work. Her eyes gleam with fury as Grover and Percy seem to have gotten closer than ever after she started to pick on them. At least their math teacher, Mrs. Dodds seems to hate Percy just as much as her.
Whatever, she has more plans. Nancy rolls her eyes and washes her face as she gets ready for bed. She glances in the mirror, looking at all her ugly traits. Her yellowish eyes like pyrite, fake gold, glaring back at her while she scowls.
Ugly, deformed little girl. Trying to fill your empty heart again?
"Shut up!" Nancy yelled at her mirror self, and the other her seemed to grin maliciously back.
Ugh, your voice sounds as disgusting as how the rest of you looks.
"Stop." Nancy's voice cracks, her eyes watering, as she starts to tremble.
Tch, pathetic. Don't pretend to have emotions now. You mons-
Nancy screams and punches the mirror, the glass splintering before her as it cracks and falls.
Nancy sheild's her face in her arms, as the glass shattered and broke completely, thudding loudly as the pieces hit the sink and floor.
Nancy stood there a moment, breathing heavily, her heart pounding wildly. She lowers her arms, her left hand throbbing with pain, and looks at the shattered glass all on the ground and sink. Her blood mixes with the pure white tiles painting her crime scene red.
And for a second, when Nancy glances at the shard pieces, she doesn't see herself, but Percy. Another scarred kid with anger issues and wants to be heard. And then it's gone when Nancy blinks.
Nancy breathes a moment before slumping to the ground, laughing hysterically.
She's going crazy, hasn't she?
Seeing things?
Having more strength than a twelve year old girl should have?
H-how did she even do that?!
The mirror shouldn't have broken that easily!
Maybe she really is some depraved lunatic villain after all.
Nancy shakes her head in disbelief, some giggles spilling past her lips.
She looks at her blood entranced. It shines bright red and leaves her body. Has she ever lost so much blood before? She doesn't think she has.
Nancy continues to laugh and giggle.
She really is crazy isn't she?
Then, Nancy feels a lump in her throat, tears threatening to spill as she shutters a dry sob.
She's a monster!
And Nancy's leaves the bathroom in horror, her heart beating rapidly. She sinks into her bed covers, wincing as her hand is still bleeding, but she ignores it, like she ignores everything else and she forces herself to fall asleep in her single dormitory. Alone, not noticing tears leaving her eyes as she wants to forget everything and dream of everything she'll never have.
And the anguish Nancy feels only makes her feel more helpless and angry. So she does the only thing a twelve year old can think of when she has nothing else. She lashes out at the world - at everyone. Especially at those who dare to stand up to her. To be so happy when she never will be!

OOOOH 🎆Fireworks and 🧵Thread and 🔥Flame if you're okay with doing three! I'm v curious c:
As for the ships themselves, maybe the Vampire Polycule and also one (whichever would fit best) for the Thirteenth Doctor!
Yay! thank you so much for the ask! I'll do the outfit question for the Doctor and vampires for the other two <3 (s/i lore ask game!)
🧵Thread: What would you/your self-insert wear in the source your f/o is from? It can be multiple outfits or just one! Bonus: Do you have a weapon? If so, describe it or show it!
My doctor who self-insert is definitely one of the button-up self inserts, I feel like they mostly wear the Ms Frizzle style coordinated button-ups and boots with fun laces (space themed, striped, etc). If they're exploring a cold area with The Doctor, they get all bundled up like the kid in that one christmas movie who can barely move because of all the layers.
Okay, Vampires!
🔥Flame: Do you/your self-insert have an enemy? If so, who is it and why are they so hated? What was a particularly heated moment between you two?
Oh, that's a complicated one for this self insert. I think that Marius would have been an enemy if I encountered him out in the world, but because I met him through Armand, I've kind of given Armand all the power in deciding how I act towards Marius. (Armand is Marius's fledgling, so I take his lead in behaviour towards him)
I will say that I think this self-insert would hate David Talbot from the later books. I don't know how the TV show is going to adapt 'old money from British colonialism in India' or if he's going to get a rewrite BUT either way I hate him and I will fight him. And Lestat is going to be stuck in the middle and trying to get us to make peace and it's going to be a disaster.
🎆Fireworks: Do you/your self-insert have any powers or abilities? If so, what are they and how do they manifest?
Yes! All vampires develop their powers over time, although the age and strength of their Makers also determines their starting abilities. I was Gabrielle's first Fledgling after two centuries, so I've got a good start, but not remarkable.
I've got pretty standard mind powers (reading mortal minds, communicating with vampires: I can't reach anything vampires don't want me to, and I can't block out the elders). I've got a specific talent for being able to locate friends and acquaintances over distance, which most of the others in the coven don't have. That doesn't feel very exciting when half of them can fly, though.
#ask games#messy vampire polycule#blue box friends#(i'm going to just make a general doctor who tag for this blog)#(my selfship with the doctor and my partner's selfship with the tardis will both happen there)#thank you again for the ask!

For the ask game: 1, 16, 21
oooooh hiiii nonnie!
1. what tv show that you watched as a child gives you the most nostalgia? oooh, probably magic school bus right? literally, i learned everything i know now from ms. frizzle. i used to watch the episodes with my sister in our little tv back in our old small apartment when she got home from school, eating goldfish and drinking orange juice from my purple tinkerbell thermos. i think carlos was my first of a long string of snarky tv crushes. literally still love him.
16. if you could cause the sequel to any book to magically come into existence, which would it be? most of my favorite books have like open endings which i think is my most favorite ending but if i had to choose maybe just maybe the perks of being a wallflower, i would just like to know that charlie is okay? but also a sequel is conflict, and conflict is sometimes pain so also maybe not?
21. what is your favorite ship dynamic? probably skinny love, they're both in love they won't do anything about it because they're stubborn idiots in love. like requited love but internal conflict in the way. its too painful, its too fun! bonus points if slow burn! masochism
#asks#anons are so cool#like look at you with your sunglasses#thank you so much btw#im procrastinating on writing the next chapter#so avoiding i shall#ilysm!

I just figured out my favorite and least favorite book/movie/show trope. it is the new teacher who is goofy and kind and it’s usually a guy (excluding Ms. Frizzle, dang she still single?) For the protagonist or protagonists, this teacher changes their life and prospective on life. The student is outcasted and this teacher is like a bright light to them.
most of the examples will be books so lets go! The book I’m reading right now, Fish in a Tree, is a story about a dyslexic girl who begins to grow into a stronger version of herself. She gets friends, bests her bullies, and learns to read in her own way. And it’s all thanks to her long term sub, Mr. Daniels. He loves to read and is bright and goofy. He likes doing things differently than other teachers. Starting to see the pattern? I like Mr. Daniels but he does feel like a hot off the press, just like the trope teacher. Always nosing into business but it helps.
Next is a famous tv teacher, the Great Ms. Frizzle. She is quirky like the rest but she is one of the best to me because she was also able to change us outside of the screen. Honestly, her teaching methods are dangerous but she was able to make her students in the show and us as the audience learn and want to learn. She is a fashion and teaching inspiration to the world.
Because of Mr. Terupt is about 7 kids and that teacher that has such an impact in their life that there are two other books about how he changed their lives. I didn’t read the other ones but they do go more in depth with his past and he is that teacher that does do things different. I can vouch that he really does change the main characters and their lives.
I would talk about Wonder but I haven’t read that in a while. I just remember teacher being thoughtful and innovative. Kind of wise.
This has been my talk on the teacher trope. It’s a cool trope but they are all similar in a way.

To the Moon and Back
PART 1
A/N: Chapter 2
Warnings: Mentions of bombs
“Hi, I'm Dr. Spencer Reid,” he said, extending one arm for a handshake.
“Dr.?” you said with a smirk, reciprocating his handshake that went on a bit too long.
“Dr.” he replied, still not letting go of the handshake. He seemed to be staring into your soul, all you did was stare back. His eyes were searching yours as if he had lost something in them. His scruffy hair made him seem so innocent.
“But we just call him pretty boy,” Derek said, hitting Reid on the back, releasing you both from your trance.
“Ok, pretty boy,” you replied, looking him up and down while messing with your hair. He seemed to shift his foot stance.
“Round table meeting in 5,” Hotch announced right on queue. You noticed JJ walking over toward you with Prentiss at her side, they reminded you of the mean girls from high school.
“There is one more member of the team you should meet,” JJ said as she grabbed your arm and led you out of the hustle and bustle of the bullpen. She took you down a hallway, passing more agents who all seemed to stop and stare at you. Was there something on your face? Just then JJ led you into a room just bigger than a janitor’s closet. Sitting at the desk was another blonde dressed in a very interesting outfit. She reminded you of Ms. Frizzle.
“Penelope,” JJ announced. “This is the newest member of our team, Dr. Y/N Y/L/N.”
“Another Doctor?” Penelope said. “ Do they give away Ph.D.’s like their candy now?” You stood there confused. Was she being mean or was she being sarcastic? Sure, you looked a little young to have a Ph.D. let alone 2, but you worked really hard for them. “I’m just kidding,” she said. “It’s so nice to meet you, I knew Hotch was looking for a new recruit but I didn’t know we would hit the jackpot,” she said pulling you into a hug. “Wait, are you smarter than the Mighty Professor?”
“They haven’t played poker yet,” JJ interrupted. “They did meet though, and I’d say it went well,” She said giving Penelope a wink. “Are you good at poker Y/N?” You had played before and you had won, but this professor sounds awfully good.
“Over spring break one year in college, I accidentally entered into a poker tournament in Vegas. I won $100,000, paid off half my student loans.”
“How do you ‘accidentally’ enter a poker tournament?” JJ asked. To be honest, you didn’t know, so you answered JJ’s questions with a shrug. “We have to get to the round table meeting.”
The three of you walked back into the bullpen and up the stairs, you entered a new room at the end of the platform with a TV screen and a round table.
“Alright let’s get started,” Hotch said, walking in and sitting down. “Garcia.”
“Does anyone remember this picture,” Garcia started.
“Hotch and I were there,” Rossi answered Garcia’s peculiar question. “That’s principal Doug Givens, we had to drag him to safety.”
“High school bombing in Boise, right?” you added.
“School shooter and school bomber,” JJ continued. “A kid named Randy Slade shot 3 students and then set off an I.E.D. in the school cafeteria via cell phone, killing himself and 13 kids total, but not before posting all of his plans online. It was one of those ‘where were you events’. My whole campus was glued to the TV”
Garcia nodded looking at her tablet, “Last night principal Givens was killed by a bomb modeled exactly like the old one.”
“It feels like the unsub wants to attack the man who kept the whole school together after the bombing,” Morgan added. “It’s a pretty symbolic target.”
“And this week is the tenth anniversary of the massacre,” you added
“And today is the first day of a 4-day event to commemorate the bombing at the school,” Garcia continued.
“Except commemorating it isn’t enough for this unsub,” you said.
“No, he wants to relive it,” Hotch said. “Alright, wheels up in 30,” As you started walking out you heard your name called and looked back to see Hotch cleaning up some papers. “Do you have a go-bag ready?”
“No sir, should I?”
“Yes, head back to your house and get one ready,” He replied. “Here is the address for the airstrip, show them your badge and they’ll let you park there for as long as we’re away.”
“How long will we be away for?”
“Pack for at least 4 days.”
“Thank you, sir.”
“Also, Y/N, good job in there today. I think the team is really warming up to you.”
“Thank you.”
As you made your way out of the FBI office, you thought about all the ways your life was about to change. First off you’d have to buy more work clothes, which you were not opposed to. Your favorite activity, second only to reading, was shopping. Your drive back to your apartment was boring. The idea of packing was boring. The idea of going to Iowa was frightening. You grew up in the midwest and didn’t want to go back. Nonetheless, you packed up what you needed in terms of toiletries and clothes you were good. For entertainment, you packed a deck of playing cards and your favorite book The Narrative of John Smith. You called a neighbor you know asked them to feed your cat. Throwing your bag in your car you groaned at the thought of not sleeping in your bed for four days. While driving your mind wandered back to the team and you started to rank them in your head. Just as you got to the mysterious Dr. Reid, you pulled into the airfield. You showed the guard your badge and drove to the parking lot. As you got out of the car you put on your sunglasses and grabbed your bag. Then you noticed JJ was walking over toward you. She too had on glasses and were carrying a bag. Once she caught up with you, you both made your way up to the jet that was sitting on the tarmac. “You guys have a private jet?” you asked seeing the surprise.
“Wait till you see the inside,” JJ responded.
As you too boarded the jet you took a seat at the table next to JJ and across from Prentiss and Dr. Reid. You settled in and noticed that nobody was talking, they were all focused on whatever boring task they chose to do. JJ was playing on her phone, Rossi was staring out the window, Derek was asleep, Hotch was reviewing the case file, and Dr. Reid had brought a book to read, about half an hour into the flight, you guys started to talk about the case
“Perpetrators of school violence are often sophisticated with their weapons. Randy Slade carried his bomb in his backpack. This guy hid his in Givens' clock radio,” Reid noted. God, he was so smart.
“Yeah, and progressive,” Prentiss added. “Each one tries to top the body
count of the one previous.”
“And they're loners by default, not by choice,” you said. “They try to join various social
groups, but they get shut out.”
“Randy Slade wasn't a loner at all,” Hotch said.
“The family cooperated fully with us,” Rossi noted. “He was a high-functioning psychopath, straight-A student, varsity wrestler, lots of girlfriends.”
“With an above-average intelligence that made him incredibly resourceful,” Reid added. “His explosive of choice was Semtex. It's found at demolition sites, but it's held under lock and key.”
“Which made us consider the possibility of a partner,” Rossi continued. “Never found one.”
“Slade was too much of a narcissist to share credit,” Hotch said. “But he was also an impulsive teen, which is what bothers me about this unsub.”
“His sense of control?” you asked.
“And the end game that he's working toward. Slade's pathology revolved around the big kill,” Hotch noted. “This unsub could have done the same if he'd waited for the candlelight vigil.”
“Which means there's no blaze of glory fantasy here,” Rossi added. “This unsub has
more bombs made, and he's savoring the anticipation of his next attack.”
“You and Reid can go to the medical examiner when we land to examine the bodies. Morgan, Prentiss and I will set up at the police station. JJ and Rossi, you two will visit the crime scene.” Hotch commanded. Once he finished, everyone returned to what they were doing.

Name ten favorite characters from ten different things (books, tv, film, etc.); then tag ten people
Been a hot minute since I’ve done one of these and now we’re all quarantined, so perhaps now’s the time??
1. Fred Rogers from Mr. Rogers Neighborhood, duh (I work in Early Childhood Education, so this man is everything to me.)
2. Steve Rogers from like all of Marvel? (haha two Rogers’, what are the odds?)
3. Sarah Crewe from A Little Princess (probably no one knows this book but I read it every Christmas and Sarah is one of the most genuinely selfless and creative characters ever written. I wish I could be more like her.)
4. Dorothy Gale from Wizard of Oz (this is pretty old school but Dorothy thinks she is weak the whole book/movie but her power is speaking up for others, persistence, love, and kindness even though she doesn’t realize it. She never gives up on her dream and never stops helping others. brb I am cry)
5. Ms. Frizzle from Magic School Bus (Another basic teacher fave. Ask questions, make mistakes, get messy! Learning is not linear and should be fun!!)
6. Matilda from Matilda. (No matter how small you have powers and can help others! Also fuck people who are mean to you, read books and play tricks!!)
7. Laura Ingalls from Little House on the Prairie (I owe this book series so much of who I am, used to constantly be reading it as a kid. Laura can be a woman and be smart, strong, independent, and unafraid of ruffling feathers or being herself. Doesn’t care for societal expectations!)
8. Eloise from Eloise, duh (Another girl who looks nice and is supposed to be prim and proper and doesn’t give a fuck. Her love of life, her confidence, and her unique creativity were contagious!! Also lol half of these are kids media, sorry y’all this is what I do?)
9. Luke Skywalker from Star Wars (Luke is so pure and good and refuses to let the world take that from him. Also refuses to see only the bad, no one is past saving or redeeming, but he also doesn’t have to lower himself to his enemies standards to win.)
10. Sophie Hatter from Howl’s Moving Castle (I’ve just read/watched this one so many times that Sophie means a lot to me. She has her whole life ruined but sees it as a chance to start over, and she does stumble, but manages to create something new for herself while finding bravery, determination, and self love!)
thanks @the-lincyclopedia for the tag! Sorry this got longer than planned. I tag @anaranjadanaranja @fancygeorgejones @yoho81 and @wayward-inspiration plus whoever is into this!

THE MAGIC SCHOOL BUS EXPLORES THE SOLAR SYSTEM GAME TV
*First introduction of Janet in the TV series. This ending, of course, makes Arnold the hero instead of Janet. Arnold then demonstrates what will happen to her if she remains on Pluto by taking his helmet off, which freezes him and forces Janet to leave Pluto immediately. The ending is changed too, with all of Janet's "proof" falling out of the bus on Pluto and her refusing to leave without it. She, of course, turns out to be on Pluto. Frizzle uses her jet pack to fly off to another planet (or, rather, dwarf planet) and provides the kids with clues as to her location via the radio on the bus. Also in this one Arnold surprisingly suggests going to outer space himself to prove to Janet the truth.Īlso, instead of remaining in the asteroid belt, Ms. Most notably, in the episode, Janet's bragging about herself doesn't appear to be empty bragging and she constantly raves about how "proof" is needed for all extraordinary claims, prompting her to force Arnold to collect "proof" from every planet in the solar system, so she can prove to the students in her class that she actually traveled to all the planets. the pilot episode) since Arnold at one point mentions that the class went on a field trip inside a rotten log, probably referring to the events of the episode "The Magic School Bus Meets The Rot Squad." (He also mentions that they've gone to the bottom of the ocean, but they didn't do that until the second-season episode "The Magic School Bus Blows Its Top.")įor the most part, the episode is faithful to the book. It is likely not the first episode produced (i.e.

Janet then flips through the book and finds the instructions for the autopilot, so they can fly back to the asteroid belt and rescue Ms. Frizzle's lesson book, which documents the information she is supposed to tell the kids during the field trip (complete with "Arnold, are you listening?" written into it.) Janet reads through the book as they pass the outer planets and until they pass Pluto, leaving the solar system. Janet looks through the Friz's things and finds Ms. Frizzle's tether line and stranding her in the asteroid belt. However, the bus's autopilot malfunctions, causing the bus to fly off, breaking Ms. However, while in the belt, the bus is damaged by an asteroid and the Friz flies out to fix the damage with a tether line connecting her to the bus. Frizzle then takes them to the Sun and then Mercury, Venus and Mars before flying into the asteroid belt. Once in outer space, the bus flies to the Moon, where the kids make the most of the lesser gravity. Frizzle accidentally pushes a button that makes the bus transform into a rocket and blast off into outer space. The Friz decides to take the kids on a field trip to the planetarium, but, once they get there, they find the planetarium is closed. Frizzle's class is learning about the solar system and Arnold's unpleasant cousin Janet, who constantly raves about herself, has joined them. Nominations Open
Nominations are open, and they'll stay open through 11:59pm EDT on 18 October. You're allowed to nominate up to 10 fandoms, with up to 10 relationships per fandom.
The tag set is located here: https://archiveofourown.org/tag_sets/4750
In order to nominate a relationship, simply click the Nominate button located in the top right-hand corner of the tag set. If you do not have an account on the AO3, please let me know, and I should be able to get you an invite. On a similar note, if you have any questions, or if you're nominating something that you think might be confusing, please either send a private message here on Tumblr or send an e-mail to [email protected].
Please don't panic if I add some type of disambiguation to relationships that you nominate.
Please see under the cut for more specifics about how to nominate relationships in many of the larger, more complicated fandoms.
Please nominate original works under Original Work for the fandom.
Please nominate crossovers under Crossover - Fandom for the fandom. List the characters with their fandom after the character name. For example: Mary Poppins (Mary Poppins)/Ms. Frizzle (Magic School Bus)/Thirteenth Doctor (Doctor Who), or F!Shepard (Mass Effect)/Garrus Vakarian (Mass Effect)/M!Hawke (Dragon Age), or Hal Jordan (Green Lantern 2011)/Ryan Reynolds (RPF)/Wade Wilson (Deadpool Movieverse).
Please nominate all relationships involving characters from the MCU movies, Agents of SHIELD, Agent Carter, Hulu Marvel series, and/or Netflix Marvel series under Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Please nominate Marvel comics under the universe they belong to: Marvel 616, Marvel Adventures, MC2, etc. If you feel the specific title they're from is complicated enough that it should be listed separately, please either leave a comment or send an e-mail with more information. Characters like America Chavez who are originally from another universe but canonically spend time in a different one can be included as part of relationships requested for either universe.
Please nominate standalone Marvel movies/TV shows such as Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes or X-Men Evolution separately under the name of the specific movie/show.
Please nominate DC films set in the current movie universe (Man of Steel, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman, Justice League, Aquaman, and Shazam!) under DC Extended Universe.
Please nominate relationships from various DC comics under DCU (Comics). If you feel the specific title they're from is complicated enough that it should be listed separately, please either leave a comment or send an e-mail with more information.
Please nominate standalone DC movies/TV shows such as Birds of Prey, Gotham, and Smallville separately as individual fandoms.
Please nominate the various DC shows on The CW (Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, and Batwoman) under DC's Arrowverse.
Please nominate Tolkien fandoms under Middle Earth – J.R.R. Tolkien or Middle Earth (Movies), depending on whether you want bookverse or movieverse. The Silmarillion would fall under the books. Any relationships featuring a mixture of movie and book canon (which would include anything set in the movies but with characters who aren't in them, such as Elladan, Elrohir, Glorfindel, etc.) should be nominated as a Crossover; please specific which characterization you want for any characters who are in both the books and the movies, ie. Aragorn (movies)/Elladan/Elrohir.
Please nominate the Star Trek TV shows under Star Trek: Classic Timeline and AOS under Star Trek: Alternate Original Series (Movies). Any relationships featuring characters from both the original timeline and AOS (other than those who canonically are in both of them like Spock) should be nominated as a Crossover.
R. Martin as separate fandoms.
Please separate anything related to the Power Rangers television shows under Power Rangers (TV), the comics under Power Rangers (Comics), and the recent(ish) movie under Power Rangers (2017).
If you have any questions about what fandom to use when making nominations, or any other questions in general, please feel free to send a message here on Tumblr. You can also send an e-mail to [email protected].

Depression and Drawing.
When I was a young lass (I want to say around 7-8 years old), I saw my biological father drawing something while he sat on the porch. The details are fuzzy, but I do remember it being an equine of some sort. He was working in ink. Watching him was so fascinating that I decided that I too wanted to be an artist. To be able to imagine something and put it to paper was a foreign concept to me, one that I was excited about. Oddly enough, my first ever drawing was of an intangible concept: an emotion. I forgot why little me was so knee-deep in sadness at the time, but I remember doodling a self-portrait of a sad, crying baby Olive while holding back my tears. Underneath (or around, I can't recall) was a caption that kind of stated the obvious: "Olivia is sad." When I think about that moment, I wonder if that was a form of foreshadowing since I suffer from...well, Major Depression. But we'll get back to that later. I think this drawing was spawned from a conflict with my siblings, but I can't rightly recall. I do, however, remember that someone tore the picture to pieces. Then came the waterworks.
I want to pause for a second and let you know that I'm going to try not to throw a pity party. I'm not going to whine and stuff this note with melodramatic hyperbole. If you can stomach an emotional artist digging deep into her head and making her introspection tangible, I encourage you to keep reading. If not, I respect your decision to stop.
To segue on to a brighter note, I started drawing in elementary school. I remember the exhilarating feeling of finishing my work. My proudest moment, aside from a (not) Sonic-themed powerpoint, was a storybook I made in fifth grade. It was a flip book of some sort, and very colorful. I think it had something to do with James and the Giant Peach considering it was a book report. But that was an impression I left. Olive, the artist. This carried on into middle school, where I first discovered anime thanks to an art teacher who had the magic VCR/TV cart we 90s kids remember fondly. He showed us Princess Mononoke, one of Hayao Miyazaki's well-renowned works. It was um...horrifying. The film scared the everloving shit out of me, but I was intrigued by it. There was something really cool about the way the people looked, far different from the Ms. Frizzles and Rugrats I came to know. It captivated me, and when I got over the stomach-churning blood and guts the movie presented, I strove to attain that cool aesthetic. I was always doodling during my classes and lunchtime and recess. People came to know me as that kid that draws. Some of them flocked to me and asked me to doodle something for them. It was annoying in hindsight, but at the time it brought me immense pride. People were interested in something I was doing! This development boosted my motivation; I drew picture after picture, happily sharing it with anyone who was interested. It was invigorating! Then high school happened, and I realized I wasn't as amazing as I initially thought I was. In 2006 I was accepted into the prestigious Philadelphia Highschool of Creative and Performing Arts (henceforth shortened to "CAPA," as to avoid the apparent mouthful of syllables). I attended with a major in visual arts, which I took alongside my core classes, i.e., math, science, and English. The first few months were humbling, to say the least. I took ceramics, graphic art, and observational drawing. During this year, I also discovered the magic (to a 15-year-old anyway) of Naruto. That was my biggest obsession since the Dragonball Z/Rurouni Kenshin/Outlaw Star/Big O/etcetera days. Where I used to make "Dark Sonic" characters and the like, I made a step towards creating a world of my own. Thus, after a painful defeat in an original character tournament, I decided it was time to start harnessing my writing and narrative skills, as well as my drawing skills. And so I strove to improve, even with those dents in my pride. It became something I was proud of, almost an obsession. I wanted to share it with the rest of the world, so I went for it.
(The first piece I’ve shared with the internet via deviantART.)
This is where my real artistic journey began. When I started, I had no idea of how mentally, physically, and emotionally tolling this would be. Half the time I've made things way more difficult than they've needed to be: sleepless nights, crouching over a desk, risky investments that granted little to no return and thus resulted in me digging myself into a deeper hole of debt, periods of psychological agony–I've experienced a great deal since I started creating these...things. In my naivety, I envisioned making money off of my creativity, having fun, meeting fans around the world, and hitting up cons like those really cool people I follow on the internet. I started comparing myself to more celebrated, experienced artists, to the point where I'd cry out of eye and earshot and wonder why I can't be as good as them. Why can't I be as skilled, or successful, I'd ask myself. This is when I should have realized that the Depression I suffer from has a voice. It'd tell me that I'd never amount to anything, let alone reach that level of expertise and fame. It was painfully merciless and cruel, and I was its punching bag. I'd start wondering what the point was and why I should even try to engage in this creative expression. Then, something tragic happened:
I realized I was falling out of love with it.
I didn't feel the same exhilaration I'd get when I finished something as simple as a little scribble. I didn't feel the warm burst of energy that I felt when I'd make a breakthrough. I desperately scrambled for something–anything–that would rekindle my love for creating again. Then, after some introspection, I decided that I wanted to try for animation. It had always fascinated me during my time in grade school, so I did some research and even wrote a thesis about animation and why it inspired me. To an extent, the passion I have for the arts did come back a little, but it was just a spark. When I started college, I was reluctantly proud of myself. I started dreaming big again, thinking about how amazing it would be if I could create my own animated series and bring my narratives to life. And so, the dreams of being able to support myself and my family returned to the forefront of my mind, again. While I hopped and skipped through my first year at uni, I built a lot of friendships I never thought I'd have after a painful summer season. I thought back to how I tried and failed to start an art team and decided to go for it again. And thus, after planning gatherings and messing around with my friends, Exploding Fairies was born!
(Old Exploding Fairies logo.)
The Depression and my wounded confidence, however, wouldn't allow for anything to go past casual hangouts and being a nuisance to my teammates. Everything boiled down to three things:
1) I was unwilling to relinquish control of any of the facets of the alliance and our stories. To me, the story we worked on was my baby, and only I would have a say in whatever developments occurred. 2) I lacked the leadership and communication skills to collaborate with my partners effectively. 3) Considering the nature of my requests, I SHOULD have been paying my partners as an incentive. I lacked the money to compensate them for their time and talent adequately. I could very well be painting myself in a horrible light considering how terribly influential my depression is to my self-esteem.

(Concept drawings of Dan’s actual identity.)
However, exposure and companionship don't necessarily pay the bills. Besides, I was still a "nobody on the internet!" I may as well have kicked sand in their faces. At least, that's what the disease told me. I grew bitter towards the world when Homestuck and a traumatizing anime gained the admiration of my friends. I became green with envy, wondering why my work didn't win such affection. That summer, I went into overdrive. I started an original character tournament of my own and gained a considerable following. I even found love again!
After a busy three months, I jumped into my second year of college. This is when I finally collapsed under the weight of my mental ailments. Week after week, I stressed almost hyperbolically to the point where a single mistake could mean the end of the world to me. I officially started as an animation student (the first year was mostly core studies with elective and liberal arts on the side), and I wanted to bring my A-game to the forefront. I was going to wow everyone with my knowledge of technology while I navigated through the hills and valleys of my second year. I got to take a course in digital 2D animation, the media I've had my eyes on since I started my college career. Everything just hinged on whether I could manage my workload (I took 18 credits). Apart from the building stress, financial troubles, and impaired health, everything seemed fine. That notion, however, was shattered when I lost my progress on a 2D animation assignment. It was all over. All of that hard work that I put in (without saving, no less) was destroyed by a corrupted file. I didn't have a backup file ready for such an occasion. Admittedly, it was my fault for letting my guard down. I should have known better as a geeky artist! To me, there was no way I could ever recover from that. I was an idiot and a crappy artist anyway! I was a failure! I was nothing! All of the horrible thoughts that my sickness cataloged was thrust into my conscious mind, impairing my ability to reason. Devastated and afraid, I called my crush and opened up about what happened. The pressure finally cracked me, and she had to talk me down from attempting suicide.
The turn of events affected everything, from my focus to my ability to complete my assignments. My crush advised me on what steps I should take while moving forward. I was hospitalized to prevent any harm I could bring to myself. I really DID want to escape from the unbearable pain my sick mind caused me. Eventually, I had to contact the dean of students and was referred to an affiliated therapist. After conversing with him and the dean, we all decided that it'd be best if I were committed to an outpatient program to start on the road to recovery. Fast forward to 2012 or 2013, when I completely lost faith in myself as an artist, and thus, my love for art. I didn't think it'd happen, but I hit what I conceived as rock bottom. I swore off drawing. It didn't bring me joy anymore, and why continue dabbling in something that I'd never be good at?
Unfortunately, the resulting slump turned out to be thicker than I'd imagine and I entered a state of deep depression. I rarely got out of bed, I overate and sometimes didn't eat at all, I never picked up a pencil or opened photoshop, never reached out to the people who I knew and who loved me...I was virtually dead to the world. Some good things happened that, in hindsight, I should have cherished. For starters, my crush became my girlfriend, and we lived together in an apartment in Center City. I was too smothered in the fog to show my appreciation and love for her adequately. She loved me and loved my work, which in turn brought back my passion for creating. If I couldn't financially support myself with my art, the least I could do is bring her joy and feed her imagination.
(We both love semi-horror and anime, so our roleplays took that direction.)
Sadly, thanks to the disease even something as precious as her happiness wasn't enough. When I look back, I can see the hurt in her eyes, but during the time I had such horrible tunnel vision and was so disappointed about things not working out with my art that I couldn't sense that. Me, a self-proclaimed empath! My desperate greed and envy were my downfall, and I limped my way down the artsy-fartsy road. I'd draw fan art and create fan comics, only to become bitter about either the lack of replies or patrons on Patreon or the perceived disregard for any personal ventures I took.
I did my first convention at Anime Impulse back in 2015, and after a pretty bad time in the artist alley, I swore off drawing again. I remember nights of staring blankly at the computer screen, smashing Command or Control +Z and ultimately throwing my stylus down, closing photoshop, and crying out of frustration. I remember pulling my hair and sobbing when I faced rejection. It was an incredibly painful time for me. That's not to say I still don't experience that now as I totally do, but something happened this year that strengthened my stride.
I posted something on Tumblr earlier this year about my frustration when it comes to creating art. It was specifically about how I get stuck in the "polishing" phase of building a webcomic page, but when I look back, I can actually attribute it to art in general. I became a "perfectionist." Nothing was impressive enough to finish or release, and I'd wind up with more works in progress than finished ones. My morale just kept dipping lower and lower, and finally, when picking up a webcomic project that I started more than a year ago, I vented my frustrations. To this, my crush, who became my fiancé some four years ago, replied with this:
"You polish because you’re not confident with your work because you're in an evolution phase. Fear holds you back. So you go back and edit. And edit. And edit. So stop the cycle. Kill the fear by not letting it have time to take hold."
Her words of encouragement and insight changed my perspective in ways I've never expected. It was almost like it triggered an epiphany or a breakthrough in my mind! I was reminded of her love and faith in me! With that came a ray of hope, that I could try again, and this time, throw my fear-induced caution to the wind! While my depression still has a voice and beats me down from time to time, I realize that it's just scared. I realized that when Brittany and I sat down and played through Celeste together. I related it to my sadness and anxiety surrounding art, and now I'm slowly getting back on my feet. I can't displace the blame and "use" my mental ailments as a scapegoat. I can't come up with excuses to give up on what I do. There is SOMETHING in creating visual media that breathes life into me.
(I started learning to let go.)
Looking towards the future, I hope I can look back on even these trying times and remind myself of where I was and how stronger I've become because of it. I'm still struggling with comparing myself to others and crashing into creative and motivational blocks, but someday I'll rise above it all. Besides, I should be doing it for me, right? The external validation should just be the topping on a sweet sundae.
That's why I keep drawing, in spite of the voice's apprehension. We're going to get through this together, I promise.

Sowing and Reaping
This sermon was delivered to the Unitarian Universalist Church of Silver Spring by Rev. Lyn Cox on August 5, 2018. In it, we explore covenant, the Pagan holiday of Lammas, and the wisdom of Ms. Frizzle. This worship services launches a one-year interim ministry.
Blessed is the earth, which brings forth food for all that lives. Blessed is the rain, flowing with the water of life. Blessed is the sun, which calls to grow and which speeds our return to the earth. Blessed is the wind that carries the seed and the mist, the warm and the cool, the new and the returned. May we collaborate with and give thanks for the forces that create and uphold life. Blessed be.
I am a clueless gardener. It might be a little bit of an overstatement to say I like gardening. It might be more accurate to say that I find gardening fulfilling, even though I don’t exactly know what I’m doing. I learn spiritual lessons from gardening, mainly about how I am not in control of the universe. Perhaps because I needed to learn that lesson now more than ever, I made an ambitious plan for this year’s garden. Starting in February, I made lists of plants and I used graph paper to map out how I hoped the garden would look.
Around May 1, my kids and my partner came home from a Department of Agriculture educational event with tomato seedlings in medium-size containers, around which they had planted spinach, beans, peas, and sunflowers. My kids had great luck, and soon we had little plants ready to be put into the ground. The spinach couldn’t make the transition, but the other plants looked promising. I re-drew my maps.
Under the general category of “I am not in control of the universe,” I have learned a few corollary lessons so far this summer. Lesson One: squirrels love tomatoes. In past years, when I grew cherry tomatoes, I could harvest some before they were snatched up. This year’s crop of lovely, disease-resistant, full-sized heirloom tomatoes proved to be irresistible to our local furry friends. Lesson Two: When you let children plant seeds, they will definitely put more than one seed in every hole. What I thought would be three sunflower seedlings turned into six tall, lovely sunflowers. There were seven, but squirrels like to eat sunflowers almost as much as they love tomatoes. Lesson Three: not all seedlings survive to bear fruit, no matter what you do. The beans had an early crop, then half of the plants died, and the rest needed a month of tender, loving care. All of the pea plants died except one. Sometimes things don’t work out the way we hope.
In late July, as I was deciding if I wanted to plant again for a late harvest or if I wanted to give up, I was reminded of the old aphorism about planting beans: “Sow four seeds as you make your row: one for the mouse, one for the crow, one to rot, and one to grow.” In other words, plan for uncertainty. Take chances, knowing not everything we try will bear the fruit we hope for. When the odds are slim, increase your tries.
Hearing this rhyme again helped me get out of the trap of, “Why me?” Gardeners and farmers in many times and places had gone through the disappointment of losing bean seedlings. The saying has some variations, such as replacing “mouse” with “cutworm,” “rook,” or “pigeon.” There are many ways for a seed to end up as something other than food for humans. Loss does not always arise from lack of effort or character flaw. Sometimes things just don’t pan out. Sometimes you learn from mishaps. The old rhyme pushed me into an experimental mindset, the ability to try new things, or to try again after failure with the full understanding that there are no guarantees. I planted some new beans and peas, along with some radishes and beets, hoping for a late September harvest.
Moving from a focus on failure to a focus on experimentation also helped me to be grateful for the plants that did survive and grow. Nurture what is working well. Give thanks, because spectacular things do not happen through the will of one person alone. If you saw my post about today’s service on Facebook or Twitter, I included a photo of the very first pea that came to maturity in my garden, one beautiful little pod, turning green and plump against very long odds.
This is the essence of some earth-centered holidays that happens around this time of year in the Northern Hemisphere, this holiday of the first harvest and the high summer tinged with the first glimmers of autumn. Some might call this holiday Lammas, which is a holiday about bread, celebrating the first grains of the season being harvested and threshed and ground. Some might call this holiday Lughnasadh (also spelled Lúnasa), after the god Lugh, a god of craftsmanship and many skills. At Lammas, we practice gratitude, we focus on the blessings we do have, and we realize that the earth itself is a more powerful partner than individual human gardeners in bringing about the abundance of the season. We remember sowing the seeds months ago, and we remember that planting is always a gamble, and we collect seeds from this year to use in the spring. When something bears fruit, we plan to use that experience in the future, we share the credit and the harvest, and we put love and artistry into the further work of transformation.
As it turns out, the spirituality of gardening carries with it some ideas that are echoed in science, education, and congregational life. One of my science education role models is Ms. Frizzle from the book and TV series of the 1990’s, “The Magic School Bus.” If you don’t know Ms. Frizzle, ask your nearest children’s librarian. In every book or episode, her students complete research projects about something like magnetism, the solar system, dinosaurs, or the human digestive system. When the students run into a question they can’t answer, Ms. Frizzle proposes a surprise field trip. “To the bus! Seatbelts, everyone!” The bus mysteriously becomes big or small, or travels through time or outer space, or withstands the conditions of a volcano or a waterfall so that the students are able to make observations and answer their scientific questions. Ms. Frizzle always says, “Take chances! Make mistakes! Get messy!” These three instructions are key for the ability of the class to learn new things and to have fun while learning.
Take chances. Make mistakes. Get messy. You will hear me say these three things again, because they also speak to a congregation’s opportunities during the Interim Ministry period.
Going back to the spiritual insights of Lammas, we learn at this time of year that we had to take chances. Only one out of four bean seeds in the rhyme led to a harvest. Sowing any kind of seed at all, literal or metaphorical, is a gamble. Not everything turns out the way we hope. Indeed, even as we bring in the first fruits, these are risky times. Sudden storms that cause the crop to rot or drought that invites wildfire are both real possibilities in August. Our inability to control the universe does not mean we are bad or lazy or incomplete. Living life to the fullest, learning and growing, requires a certain degree of risk.
In spiritual community, especially during the golden opportunity of an Interim year, we take chances together. We experiment with new ways of understanding the world, with different ways of worshipping and of doing church. We take the risk of speaking the truth with love. Take chances.
Make mistakes. Ms. Frizzle reminds us that the scientific method involves making a hypothesis and testing it. If we guess right every time, science doesn’t advance as quickly. We have to be willing to be wrong sometimes, and to admit we were wrong so that we can get to the juicy, exciting part of the learning process. We are human beings and we are fallible. Our tendency to make mistakes does not and should not cut us off from human community or from the traditions of spiritual growth or from the disciplines of science and craftsmanship. Humans are welcome in community, broken and whole, flawed and fabulous.
Lugh, the god who is celebrated at Lughnasadh (Lúnasa), is a character of many skills. He’s a warrior and a wheelwright, he’s a musician, he’s an athlete. Even mythical characters have to practice. Getting better at anything, from blacksmithing to gardening to being human, means we have to start out not being very good at it. Fail spectacularly. Fail with gusto. Fail better, and keep learning.
I tried growing beans and peas, and I mostly failed for the first harvest. Some part of that was due to random chance, but another part helped me learn about drainage, pest control, and planting more seeds than I think I am going to need for my crop. We’ll see how the second harvest goes. When I remembered that it’s OK to make mistakes, I was able to celebrate what I had and use what I learned rather than dwell on failure. Make mistakes.
Get messy! Farming involves getting covered with dirt, and sometimes covered in things more specific than dirt. Science education can lead to all kinds of messes, from vinegar and baking soda reactions to rock collections to close observations of living things. The abundance of Lammas puts us knee deep in flour, or the gluten-free grain of your choice. In the middle of a chaotic rush to bring the harvest home, we pay more attention to what we are doing together than on looking neat and pristine or on creating the illusion of having everything together.
In spiritual community, we get messy by being vulnerable and by accepting the range of wisdom and experience and emotion that our companions bring to community. An inclusive community welcomes all people, but not all behaviors. Figuring out how to be together, setting boundaries to help the congregation to be a place of courage and growth, is not easy. This is the art of covenant. Communities where people are authentic are complicated and difficult and heartbreaking and annoying and surprisingly joyful. Get messy.
This Lammas, let us give thanks. Let us remember the risks and acknowledge the losses, yet let us focus on gratitude and abundance. Fail better, and increase tries. This Lughnasadh (Lúnasa), let us celebrate the skills within us and among us, and let us commit to the love and artistry of living in community. As we bring in the first fruits of this new church year together, let us commit to a path of spiritual growth, lifelong learning, diverse and welcoming community, justice, and compassion. To stay on that path, let us take chances, make mistakes, and get messy.
So be it. Blessed be. Amen.

Why “The Battle for Rock Mountain” is the best episode of the Magic School Bus reboot
So this happened.
I was honestly a little skeptical of them doing a superhero episode. It seemed gimmicky and lazy. Everyone does superheroes now.
But in spite of my hesitations, this became my genuine favorite episode of the reboot, even surpassing the one about climate change (The Tales Glacier Tell) that I had been waiting on for so long.
Quick synopsis:
Walkerville Elementary is burying a time capsule and all the kids are putting something inside. Tim decides he wants to put in an original comic but doesn't know what to draw. When Arnold and Ralphie (who are also putting in comics) argue over which of their favorite superheroes is better, Tim decides to draw the battle between Captain Rock-man and Weatherman (sheika sheika KABOOM!). *incidentally, this catchphrase from PBS is never uttered in this episode...*
Ms. Frizzle takes the class to Iceland, where, surrounded by rocks and the natural forces that shape them, Tim draws an epic battle.
As you may have guessed, the episode is about the rock cycle: an important natural process that quite literally shapes the Earth. And while most of the action happens in the comic, the class does explore first-hand as well by tumbling down a river and entering a volcano.
Design and Writing
Even though I originally thought it tacky, superheroes are an ingrained part of today’s culture. The current target audience for this cartoon doesn’t know a time before the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Superheroes and superhero tag-teams are part of their pop culture and this episode embraces that fully. And while Tim is drawing a comic, the transitions harken back to the 1960′s Batman tv show.
In addition to reflecting modern culture, this episode pays homage to the original PBS cartoon not once, but twice. First with Weatherman - a character Ralphie loved in the original, so much so that he pretended to be him in a weather-related episode. Then with Captain Rock-man, who is a call-back to the episode about rock weathering from the original that saw Arnold discovering the power of water and wind to erode a mountain. The fact that Arnold is Captain Rock-man is just the cherry on top of this situation.
The episode is mostly about Tim as he is the one facing the conflict. He has a few hours to create a comic that will go in a time capsule. But despite this, the episode also manages to include all the other kids in important roles. Not even the original can claim that. Usually, there was always one “main kid” per episode; the one who was facing the problem or challenge. Occasionally, there were two “main kids”, usually when the conflict was between two of them. The others were just along for the ride and contributed ideas and such but the episode wasn’t about them. In this one, everyone has an important role and everyone demands to be included. There’s even a great moment where the girls stand up to Tim and demand that some women enter the comic book story he is drawing.
It is designed beautifully and every kid gets their own unique alter ego and powers. Here’s a quick roll call:
Weatherman (Ralphie) - a Superman-inspired hero who creates the weather
Captain Rock-man (Arnold) - an enormous half-man, half-rock entity as old as the Earth itself
Boy H2O (Carlos) - a boy made of water with the power to erode and cause tidal waves (and really bad puns)
Scarlet Scorch (Keesha) - extreme underground heat that resembles the Human Torch
The Tectonic Duo (Dorothy Ann and Wanda) - the extreme pressure of tectonic forces in a Wonder-Twins homage
Mighty Inferno (Jyoti) - the literal embodiment of molten magma that vaguely resembles Hindu goddesses
The soundtrack is also incredible. It runs the gamut from the typical whimsical music of each episode to epic scores during the comic book battles. I legitimately got chills watching this episode the first time.
The writers of this episode must have gone back to some of the old PBS episodes because the structure follows a formula very similar to the one PBS did, which always seemed to make the lessons stick better: begin the lesson, expand the lesson, show something unexpected about the concept, review the steps covered, emphasise that the process repeats endlessly. This works especially well for a topic like the rock cycle, which is literally an infinite cycle of change and rebirth.
This episode literally is Infinity War.
Long story short, if you watch any of the new episodes, definitely check this one out.
Also, Ms. Frizzle dresses like a superhero. What more do you need?
