Because here’s the thing: from the dawn of Batman comics to now, through all the changes that have occurred, there has only been one thing that remains constant and that is the fact that Bruce trusts Dick unconditionally.

There are MULTIPLE scenarios where Bruce confides solely in Dick and he actually worries heavily when his only companion leaves:

The Brave and Bold (1955) Issue #197

"My only real friends know me as Batman...Dick, Alfred, Kathy Kane...except..what do I do when Dick graduates college...and Alfred retires...and Kathy gives up being Batwoman? What do I do...when I'm finally alone?"

Bruce...that's a whole lot of pressure and expectation to put on a kid a decade younger than you..

But the point still stands because Bruce needs Dick. In the beginning of the Batman comics, there wasn't even Alfred around. It was just Dick and Bruce and they lived in an entire mansion together by themselves and had dual responsibilities of Dick Grayson and Bruce Wayne as well as Batman and Robin. It was quite literally only the two of them in their own world. They went on adventures you wouldn't believe and had things happen beyond people's wildest imaginations. The Golden Age was a fever dream that encompassed only the two of them. They didn't have anyone else and they didn't want anyone else.

Dick pulled Bruce out of one of the worst times of his life when he was just Robin and Bruce pulled Dick out of depression during his. This resulted in a unbreakable bond. It's a deep kind of unshakable, irreplaceable love and profound trust that they have in each other that the other will only and always be there for them in the worst of times of their lives and the happiest of ones as well.

It's that kind of devotion and attachment to each other that established their relationship for decades. Every single timeline has consistently kept this - "You're my only one." - kind of relationship between the two of them.

So that is why Dick is the only person Bruce is susceptible to. He never questions Dick in the comics ever. He's questioned every single person he's ever worked with about their intentions but never Dick. So Dick tells him the world is ending then the world is ending for Bruce.

If Dick tells him that red is an awful tie color, then it's an awful tie color that Bruce will never wear.

If Dick tells him to slick his hair back, take a break, be more compassionate, have faith - Bruce will do anything and everything. And this has been proven time and time again for the most menial situations to the most serious ones.

While everyone looks up at Bruce for answers and orders, Bruce will look to Dick and what he says, that's what they'll all do.

And here's the thing - the entire superhero community doesn't rely just on Bruce for commands, Dick is shown to have an equal weight. A single person has the equivalent weight of the Justice League. They will do what Dick says regardless of what Bruce says.

But the point is Bruce's utter faith in Dick gives him privileges. Anything and everything Dick decides, that's the answer, logic, and light of very reasoning to Bruce because Dick is the very source of existence for Bruce. In Forever Evil he almost let the world die intentionally because he felt that there was nothing to the world if he couldn't save Dick. At times he's fought Dick over his personal choices but every single time, without fail, he comes back literally two issues later to tell him sorry and you're right and we're going to do it your way.

Dick could let the world burn to fucking ashes and Bruce would stand by and clap and praise him. That time in the Blockbuster arc? Where Dick passively killed a man and started self-harming? Bruce roughly grabbed his face, got real close, and told him in his darkest voice that he doesn't give a flying fuck who dies or who Dick kills. As long as Dick doesn't dare hurt himself.

Dick can tell Bruce anything he ever wants, lie or truth, big or small, and Bruce will believe it with no doubts and no questions asked. That is the weight of his faith in him. Of course if someone does ask why he chose to do something a certain way? He can just say, "Because Dick said so." And as you called it, that answer alone will be enough. For everyone.

I'm lazy to get the pictures but in the AU, claggor was talking about a certain yellow flower that can purify the air in the undercity but it's not efficient enough I think powder says "not unless you plant a million of them" and milo says "no way" (idk if I'm remembering correctly)

I saw someone also point out some of sky's notebook sketches was on plants and flowers, idk if its canon she's a bio-engineer but I hc it now

I think my s/i first hoped to add greenery to the undercity but wasn't sure how achievable it was. He studies in piltover so he got in touch with sky to ask about the plant stuff so he had some idea. So in the next few weeks we went to the undercity to check out how suitable it could potentially be or if it's a long shot, couldn't hurt to try

Even though the sewage pipes leading to the firelights base is complicated, I feel like if you stand at the right area on top and look down, you could see the gigantic tree?? So eventually he does notice it, maybe from quite a distance so he didn't know there were people there, just that there was some green and sunlight obviously reached there. So he tried to find a way down and one of the firelights caught him like tresspasing or something lmao then he meets ekko later it's along that vein. and explains his thing and ekko wants to help so from then on they worked closely and wren stays over at the base a lot.

I don't think they figured out the thing about the yellow flowers yet, they have just been planting trees.

Not sure about the timeline for the ship lore but then Ekko goes to the AU. During that conversation I mentioned earlier, they were on the topic of plants in the undercity so he asked where Wren was.

They asked, who's Wren?

They didn't meet in that AU, there were no firelights, the ones improving the undercity was everyone he knew, his friends and family. Himself too of course but not with the firelights, and not with Wren who didn't go down to accidentally meet him in person.

When ekko returns to the og universe he tells wren about the flowers and they'll eventually plant their own. Plus ekko leads a community that he can mobilise to do it on a larger scale. Although in the og verse the air is much worse so it'll probbaly take more than planting flowers to turn things around, but it's some impact nonetheless

It's either that or they already knew about the flowers and were already planting a number of them themselves before ekko went to the AU. So he goes and sees he and wren also did the same, and even were ahead in progress.

I guess what wren represents for him is just. Company in the journey towards what his dream for the undercity could be. In the AU episode in canon ekko says he "gave up on the undercity" so I guess if he had always been independent he would start thinking that. It's when he sees the undercity in the AU that changed his mind, but I feel like that trigger would also happen if he was shown that a way to improve the undercity was to better the environment through nature and involving the community he knows of to plant and be responsible for what they plant. I feel like that's a tangible thing that could inspire him to keep going and was sparked from wren's idea that he introduced to him when they met

sorry for making yet another textpost but i came across that post saying they dislike transfem natsume because he "canonically hates being perceived as a girl and tries to erase all sorts of memories related to that" and also went on to shame genderbends of him aswell. So, as someone who not only draws genderbends of natsume but is myself someone who is nonbinary and hates being perceived as a woman, i thought id offer my two cents

first of all; i think its important to note that natsume does NOT hate his childhood. in fact, hes quite happy that he had such an unusual upbringing!

what natsume hates is being perceived as weak. thats why he was raised as a girl after all, it was his mother trying to protect him from evil spirits. he doesnt hate the whole "-chan" or "wearing dresses" thing because he has a hatred for womanhood, its because due to his upbringing hes now come to associate those things as being weak. he begs tsumugi to forget about it because that means tsumugi remembers natsume being weak, and natsume thinks tsumugi still referring to him as "natsume-chan" means he still sees natsume as weak. (iirc natsume did however once say that he is a little sad that he doesnt really know how to relate to young boys due to this in poltergeist, but i couldnt find the exact quote. either way that just adds to the complexity of natsumes relationship with his childhood, because while he is happy to be "abnormal" in that sense, it has left him lacking in some areas)

i have to ask though, should this conflict of his not be something we hope he overcomes? should we not want him to develop a healthy relationship with various gender expressions? should we not want natsume to overcome his belief that feminine things = weakness? i want natsume to reach a point where he can wear feminine clothing and not feel like some damsel in distress because of it. i want natsumes character to grow. i want him to develop a positive relationship with his gender because natsume DOES enjoy some more typically feminine things, like baking! he used to bake with his mom when he was little! and i want him to feel like he can indulge in that side of him without feeling insecure.....

i LOVE transmasc natsume, my primary hc for him is transmasc nonbinary after all, but with all these things considered, shouldnt people be allowed to headcanon him however they want? if they hear his story and negative relationship with femininity and how that resonates with them and they themselves are transfem, should they not be allowed to hc him as such too?

which brings me to my next point; my own personal relationship with gender and femininity. i was raised as a girl and i fucking DESPISED womanhood. i hated everything about it. i hated how i felt forced into a box i didnt want to be stuck in, and i hated how it felt like my whole life had already been planned out for me due to societal expectations, aswell as me needing to present a certain way. i was peak "tomboy" growing up, constantly wearing super baggy clothes and wouldnt even brush my hair alot of the time. but despite that i remained miserable. i frankly hated how i looked and would constantly dye my hair vibrant colors in an attempt to make me like myself a little more. it wasnt until i realized "wow, im actually not a girl at all" that i finally let go of believing i needed to look a certain way (and thus, defying it) and started to dress for myself. i started to dress in clothes that made me happy and feel pretty! alot of which leans feminine, but clothes doesnt have a gender, and how you dress doesnt define your gender either, but it can still be a bit scary yknow? especially since i dont want people to think of me as a girl, and drawing a bunch of femstars has really made me learn to love myself more in a funny way. i can put these characters in clothes i think are beautiful, i can explore the more feminine parts of me that i adore but dont want to express in public due to how i want others to perceive me, but it has also warmed me up to femininity even more. because femstars to me feels detached from the expectations of society because its not a real thing!! there are no canon femstars designs!!! i can do literally whatever the hell i want with it and its been so liberating to me!!

all this to say; i think it really sucks seeing the way this fandom treats transfem hcs and explicit genderbends, because like ive said before; they can truly be something so personal. you dont know why that person is drawing what theyre drawing, so its a little unwise to make assumptions based on ........ I've been thinking a lot about the Valdez family—and not just Sammy, Esperanza, and Leo—so I decided to make my own in depth Valdez family list with headcanons (obviously, since some we don't even know the name of)

Sammy Valdez was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was the first in his family to be born in the United States, his parents having immigrated from Mexico right before he was born.

Sammy's wife (Leo's bisabuela), Otília Delgado-Fuentes, was born in the Dominican Republic and immigrated to Houston as a teenager with her parents. She met Sammy at his shop when her car broke down and the rest in history. She ended up working the business side of Sammy's shop, selling spare parts, as well as putting in transactions for what Sammy was doing.

In addition to Sammy Jr. (I'm just gonna be calling him Samuel for the sake of simplicity for now on), I think they had three editional kids: the others being Emilio, Aleyda, and Evangelina. Samuel was the eldest, followed by Aleyda, Emilio, and finally, Evangelina.

Samuel, as well as Evangelina, followed in their father's footsteps and became mechanics. Aleyda became a writer, and Emilio helped his mother run the business portion of the shop. Both Emilio and Aleyda decided to attend college, while Samuel and Evangelina did an informal trade school under their father's tutegale.

Aleyda moved away to New York and married a fellow latine writer named Salvador García, and barely keeps in touch with the family. They have no children.

Emilio married a woman named Martha Delacruz and had three children—Silvia, Estefania, and Enrique.

Evangelina never married, instead focusing on her career. She was Esperanza's favorite person when Esperanza was a girl, and her biggest inspiration, and also adored Leo. I haven't decided why or how, but unfortunetely, Evangelina died sometime before Esperanza, because I'm convinced she would have fought tooth and nail to get custody of Leo if she was there.

Samuel, of course, had two daughters, Rosa and Esperanza. Samuel married Margarita Rosa Iglesias-Perez, a Mexican immigrant who went to Houston to attend college.

Rosa, in addition to Raphael (who Leo mentions in Mark of Athena, I believe) has two more children, María Rosa and Carmen with her husband, Matías Cisneros-Cortez.

Esperanza, obviously, has just Leo, who is the eldest of Sammy's great-grandkids, as stated in Mark of Athena. Some childhood Leo Valdez headcanons of mine is that he attended a bilingual school up until third grade (we know why third grade) and that he had to be taken to another classroom during math because he would act out due to boredom. (He has ADHD and was at a college math level at 8, of course he'd be bored.)

These next three are future, or my headcanon for Leo's kids, so if you were just here for the possibly canon-compliant ones, that's over! I'm totally fine with people using the previous name headcanons in fics without giving me credit, as it is just names, but I'd appreciate it if people tell me about some Valdez family fics! I'm always looking for some, and have only read like one or two. However, for Leo's children, if you take more than just their names, I'd appreciate the tag. I've had them since like 2016, and am really attached, even though some details have changed a lot since then (example being, back then, I thought canon couples were infallible and I had to make them Leo and Calypso's kids, when now, they're just Leo's).

This part is detailed in my Solangelo future fic, Surprise? but my favorite hc of all time is aro/ace Leo who adopts demigods to give them the childhood he deserved. So all three are demigods (children of Hephaestus as well, because I think that's fitting) and Leo's a single father who gets help from everyone at Waystation.

The eldest is Madalena Esperanza, who has her own POV in Surprise? in Chapter 7: Leo and Calypso's Garage: Auto Repair and Mechanical Monsters. She was born in Portland, Oregan, and her mother died of childbirth. With no other living family members, Hephaestus took her to Waystation to see if Emmie and Jo could take her (as Leo was still in college, at 20), but Leo saw her and instantly realized that he wanted to adopt her because he saw bits of baby him in her, and had the funds to as he was working part time at a local mechanic shop on weekends that paid decent, and Emmie and Jo were able to help. Madalena was the name her mother had planned to give her, and Leo added Esperanza when he officially adopted her. Random fact about her is she grows up to be an Olympic level skateboarder, and Leo built her a few pipes to practice.

Next, also in Surprise? is Leo's middle, Aidan. His story is detailed almost completely in the fic—his bio mother didn't want a kid and was going to give him up for adoption so Hephaestus went to Leo to ask him if he wanted to adopt another kid. Leo said yes, and him and Lena went to Illinois to pick him up from the hospital. His bio mother also didn't want to name him, so Leo and Lena did.

Finally, not in Surprise? is Emilia. Leo's youngest, who's seven years younger than Aidan, and thirteen younger than Lena, so she's not present in the fic, but is special in my heart. Her bio parent, like Lena's, died in childbirth, and Hephaestus once again asked Leo if he had room for one more kid. She was born in Miami, Florida.

So, there's my Valdez family tree! Again, feel free to use everyone in your fic, but Lena, Aidan, and Emilia are my children so I'd like a tag for them.

Here's a quick headcanon for you, though !

Lloyd 100% reads fanfiction. I don't make the rules. He is deep, deep into the Starfarer fandom, and he sometimes even writes his own fics (with the help of Pixal <3)! He tried to commission Cole to draw something for him (Cole please please pretty please? I have this really cute idea!!! Don't you love me? 🥺) and that ended with him being tossed onto the closest soft surface and smothered by a pillow. Lloyd definitely jumped for joy when a few days later, there's the exact Starfarer drawing he wanted sitting peacefully on his pillow. Cole got a lot of hugs that day, not that he's complaining. Lloyd's the type of person to gush about his favorite hyperfixations but feels guilty about it when he thinks that no one cares/they're not interested/they think he's being too childish. To counter that, his family give their utmost attention to him, asking questions and giving their own thoughts about it. A safe bet for gifts is just giving him plushies or merch from the series. Jay got him a first edition comic, and then he couldn't enter a room with Lloyd in it without getting thrown into a wall by a very aggressive and well-meaning hug.

I've been talking about physical affection a lot in this hc, so I have to make it known my stance on this. When he was younger, he definitely had touch-starvation issues. He grew up with literally no physical positive reinforcement, and when he was touched, it was most likely for a cruel prank or a school-issued punishment. So, when he went to the bounty with the ninja, he tried his hardest to subtly try to get physical affection without seeming "needy" or "weak." He sometimes didn't even realize he was doing it. He just subconsciously walked closer to Kai and let his hand brush against him or sat across from Jay and "jokingly" kicked his leg. He uses pranks often to try to get some type of touch, usually in the form of being dragged to the scene of the crime to clean something up (oopsie sorry Kai I didn't know that you wanted your upside down container of hair gel to be closed. I didn't think it would just fall out, sorry teehee). Eventually, the ninja figure it out - probably with the help of Nya if I'm being honest - and make sure to give him lots and lots of cuddles. Eventually, he just grows to be a very physically affectionate person, most likely because he was deprived of it.

About the Kaito keeping his secret ID through Refuge In Audacity do you think Conan stuck with his first guess that KID was younger than 20 or later dismissed it as KID wearing a mask? (Ik this isn't relevant to the kuroba sitcom but I had Ditto in the brain haha)

I personally hc that he logicked it away as "he can't be THAT young, learning all those skills he has would take time" and then Kaito TOLD HIM his mom was Phantom Lady who did crazy gymnastics so she couldn't have been very old and dissappeared a scant 20 years ago and Conan went "welp"

Ik that Hakuba figured KID's age through DNA and then compared to highschool databases across the country, but first that's not how DNA tests work, the length that tells how old someone is changes from person to person, and second, I'm not familiar w Japanese laws regarding privacy and DNA databases but I'm fairly sure that what Hakuba did was like. Super illegal. Probably why Hakuba hauled ass back to London after that case actually, I bet he only got away with it bc nepotism (IT'S SURE ILLEGAL IN THE UK)

I still rlly want to know if Hakuba sat KID down w an optometrist board and an IQ test though, HOW did he get that data. GREAT QUESTION I think conan kept it in mind, but became less sure of himself over time. conan/shinichi has a pretty skewed idea of what kids are capable of doing, and I think he knows this about himself, so it’s reasonable for him to think “...nah, it would be insane if a high schooler was doing all this… right?” and if he was basing his original age guess off of what he could see of kid’s face and body shape, well, he learned very quickly that kid can change any of those traits at any time. who’s to say that kid wasn’t wearing makeup/a mask/anything else that might change his silhouette? …left to his own devices for long enough, conan can become a victim of his own overthinking, lol.

aaaand then kaito dropped the Phantom Lady tidbit. that, if anything, seemed to me like a peace offering of some kind? possibly meant to even the playing field between them? as always, it’s hard to tell what shinichi and kaito actually Know in canon, though I’m of course personally a fan of them knowing the least amount of information possible while still being as intelligent as we know they are. because shenanigans >:D

if we want to have fun with it ;) , I think the phantom lady reveal only narrows down kid’s age to,,,,, younger than 30? ish? it mostly gives conan an upper limit, since he doesn’t know whether kid was born before or after her retirement, and she easily could’ve retired in her early 30s. what it Does confirm is that this kid isn’t the original one, but that only narrows his identity down to “probably a protege of kid #1.” from there, the biggest bit of provable evidence against kaito is that his father died right when the original kid disappeared, but that’s still a pretty big logic leap to make when you aren’t around kaito all the time (like hakuba is). and toichi had students, too! who knows who else he taught besides yukiko and sharon? who is more likely to be kaitou kid: an undercover protege of toichi’s, or his teenage son who has an alibi for multiple heists?

best I can tell from some brief research, in Japan, DNA collection isn’t regulated for law enforcement, but hakuba isn’t law enforcement, he’s a consultant at best. I think other DNA tests for ppl age 16+ require consent of the person, and 16 or younger require the consent of a parent. hakuba has NEITHER. hakuba was saved from being a juvenile criminal by nepotism and the fact that nakamori laughed in his face instead of charging him with obstruction of justice or something. and yeah, that’s Absolutely Not How DNA Tests Work adjfksjdj

FR THO!! now I’m imagining hakuba chasing kid through a museum yelling “WHAT NUMBER LOGICALLY FOLLOWS THE SERIES ACCORDING TO THE GIVEN PATTERN” while kid answers with, like, extremely confused perfect accuracy. “400 iq” honestly sounds more like something hakuba made up to explain the fact that kid could answer the iq test questions while rappelling down a skyscraper lol. and I totally agree, kaito’s probably never been officially tested—it’s important for kids to be with their peers, especially when you’re already likely to have child prodigy syndrome. also because kaito and aoko get along so well, they would run the risk of never making other friends (cough shinichi cough). plus, the kurobas probably like to avoid official records as much as possible, and scoring even in the 160+ range would gather attention that their family of internationally-wanted criminals does Not need

Tolkien Family Week, Day 1: Parent-Child (aka, Éomer becomes a father)

Hey, welcome to my trip through Rohan for @tolkienfamilyweek! For this prompt, of course my mind went right to my #1 guy, Éomer Éadig, and how he would feel when becoming a father for the first time, particularly in light of all the loss he’s endured, including both of his own parents.

While I wrote this for TFW, I still wanted it to be consistent with my personal head canon for Rohan. So, as a reminder, in my world Éomer got married after the war to his childhood best friend, Mereliss, who is a daughter of Elfhelm (I’ve just always wanted to see him with a Rohirrim even though that’s not canon!). There’s also a brief mention of Bryttalif, who is Háma’s wife in my HC, but she’s here because she’s the midwife in Edoras.

Another muffled cry of pain escaped from the room next door, followed by the quieter sound of whimpering. Éomer’s leg, which had been jogging up and down with nervous energy all evening, now hammered with such force that the cups on the table before him started to shake. Elfhelm put one steadying hand on his ale mug, which was slowly vibrating its way toward his lap, and the other on his son-in-law’s shoulder. 

“Try to stay calm. I know this is hard, but it’s going to be alright. I promise.”   

Éomer grunted in response and his knee stilled, but the anxious energy merely transferred to his hands instead. He began to chew a fingernail, stopping only to turn every so often and look at the closed door at the far end of the room, staring intensely as though he could will it to open if he simply watched it closely enough.

“It is not unusual for these things to take many hours,” Elfhelm said, reading the thought behind Éomer’s repeated looks. “You just have to be patient and try not to think too hard about what may be happening in there right now. Put that part out of your mind and focus your thoughts instead on how happy you will be when this is over.”

Just at that moment, another wail rang out, starting as a sharp, loud cry and fading into a desperate, guttural sob. All color drained from Éomer’s face.

“I don’t know how you expect me to ignore that!” He sputtered out the last word, flinging a hand in the direction of the cries. “Surely something is going horribly wrong, and instead of helping I’m just sitting here, utterly useless. It is intolerable.”

He stood to rush from the room, but Elfhelm rose with him and blocked his path with a firm palm on his chest. 

“I understand how you’re feeling. Believe me, I do. I’ve been through this before, you know. But as distressing as it is, what you’re hearing is normal. This is a painful business. And the people who are already in that room know far more than you do about how to handle it. Bryttalif is an expert. She will let you know if and when you need to be in there.”

Éomer sank back down into his chair, elbows on his knees with his eyes to the ground and his fingers laced through his hair behind his head. He took several deep breaths, blowing out each exhalation through gritted teeth. “It does not seem fair,” he murmured. “Maybe I should be glad to have the easy part, but I would take her pain from her in an instant if I could.”

Elfhelm gripped his shoulder. “I know you would.” 

They sat in silence for a time, each lost in his own thoughts, until the sound of a turning doorknob was finally heard and both men rocketed to their feet. With his heart in his throat, Éomer watched Bryttalif step into the room, wearing a blood-stained apron and wiping her hands with a dampened towel. She dropped into a brief curtsy before raising her eyes to speak, and Éomer felt as though he lived several lifetimes in those final few seconds of waiting. 

“Éomer King, it is my honor to tell you that you have a beautiful baby girl.” She smiled broadly. “The queen is recovering, and she and your daughter are waiting to see you now.”

“A daughter?” Éomer’s face transformed in an instant, glowing with happiness, relief, and a thousand other feelings he could not have articulated. “I have a daughter!” He turned to Elfhelm and threw himself into the older man’s arms, burying his face in Elfhelm’s shoulder to hide his tears. They stood quietly together for several long moments before Éomer broke away and bounded joyfully over to Bryttalif, lifting her up and spinning her around as she laughed and blushed. 

Elfhelm watched Éomer’s elation with bemused pride before once again putting a hand on his shoulder to calm him. “Don’t waste your time out here with us, my boy. Get in there and see your wife and child! And tell Mereliss I love her and will be waiting here if she needs me.”

Éomer nodded and hurried off behind Bryttalif, back on her feet and headed into the bedchamber next door.  After showing him in, the midwife and her assistant quietly excused themselves to allow the new family a moment of privacy. 

From the doorway, Éomer observed his wife, her hair gathered in a sloppy bun and a slight sheen of sweat still on her forehead but radiant with exhausted triumph. In her arms was the baby she had carried and delivered for him, swaddled already in a warm blanket against the drafty coolness of the chamber. He felt overwhelmed by love–for Mereliss, for their baby, for Elfhelm and Bryttalif, for anyone and everything in the world that had brought him to this moment of pure happiness.

He came to Mereliss’s side and gently tucked some loose tresses behind her ear. She looked up at the touch and leaned her cheek into his palm with a smile.

“I named her Sigewyn. I hope you approve.”

Sigewyn. Joyful victory. He could not have imagined a better choice. 

“It is perfect, just as you are perfect and she is perfect and my life right now is perfect.”

Mereliss patted the bed next to her. “Would you like to hold your daughter?” 

He slowly lowered himself to the bed, feeling abruptly nervous, almost bashful. When he 

had carefully lifted Sigewyn from Mereliss’s chest and laid her awkwardly in the crook of his arm, he looked back at his wife. “I…is this…am I doing this right?”

She beamed at him. “You look wonderful together.”

With Sigewyn in his arms, he was immediately more aware of his own body. His imposing strength and size presented a stark contrast to the impossibly tiny, delicate infant that was now nestled against his chest, whose head fit easily into the palm of his rough hand. And though he had a natural and graceful agility in his ordinary life, while brandishing a sword or swinging in and out of a saddle, he felt suddenly clumsy and tentative as though the simplest movement on his part could hurt or disturb this most precious of fragile things. He kept motionless, even slowing his breathing to a slow, shallow pace, but his eyes actively soaked in every detail, and he was instantly besotted with all that he saw, from her rounded little cheeks to the dusting of golden hair on her head and her large hazel eyes that matched his own. Contented tears slipped from his chin and onto the blanket that protected his newest, greatest treasure.

Mereliss reached up to brush a tear from his cheek, and he laughed a little at himself as he sniffled. “Look at me, head over heels already. She’s just like her mother—it took less than an instant for her to fully own my heart.” 

Mereliss smiled. “I am happy to share it with her.”

He thought quietly for a moment before inhaling a long, shaky breath and blowing it out again slowly, trying to master his feelings. “I wish that my parents could see her.” It came out almost as a whisper.

“Me too.” She leaned over to kiss his shoulder. “But a part of them lives on in her now. She will carry on their legacy.”

He nodded and looked back down at Sigewyn. She would, in fact, grow up to have Éomund’s indomitable courage and Théodwyn’s infectious laugh, just as she would be tenacious like Éowyn and quick-witted like Mereliss. She would have Éomer’s own easy ability to make friends, and Elfhelm’s unflagging optimism.  She would become a strong and capable woman, the first to inherit the throne of Rohan and rule as queen in her own right. But none of that mattered now, not to him. There was nothing she needed to do, no way that she had to look or think or act, in order to earn his love. 

She had it, now and forever, simply by being his.

hey sorry if this is a weird question but you’re the same person who wrote that really incredible Better Jeremy post-canon fic right? Sorry I’ve never met anyone that matches my enthusiasm for the Better Jeremy ending and how much it hurts my soul, I was wondering if you had any further headcanons about that ending? how ‘far-gone’ is Jeremy do you think?

HIII HI YES THATS ME THATS MEEEEE. I LOVE THINKING ABOUT THAT ENDING I HAVE SOOO MUCH FUN WITH IT AND I'M SO GLAD YOU LIKED THE FIC ABOUT IT. the SECOND i learned it was an ending that exists i went looking for content abt it and i was SO upset i couldn't find any. so i'm glad my strategy to corner the market was successful.

i will take ANY excuse to go into detail surrounding some of my HCs about this ending so here we go. obviously NFB spoilers ahead. YAY!!!

i'm honestly just going to commandeer this ask to talk abt stuff regarding betterment jeremy that i either kept in mind while i was writing the fic, couldn't find time/space to squeeze into the fic, or stuff that i never intended on actually writing down but were fun to think about.

in regards to your actual question, how far gone jeremy really is: honestly. i think he's kind of in an irreversible state. but that's how trauma works, isn't it. stuff happens to you, and even if you can get 'better'- whatever better means for you in that context- you'll never truly be the same.

that being said though, i do think jeremy could become healthier after a while. but it would be a long, long while, and i do honestly think jenny is the only person who could get him there. she knows him better than anyone else- she can read his tells like an open book- she knows what part of him is the genuine him. regardless of whether that part of him is alive or dead, if anyone could coax it out of him, it would probably be her...

i don't think i have to say that jeremy has been through some horrible stuff at betterment. even before he gets taken away again in the finale, it's written all over his facial expressions, his body language, his behaviors. the second betterment is even mentioned, he's turning to his friends, staring pleadingly into his eyes, telling them that he can't go back. instinctively, they put comforting hands on him- pat him and reassure him that they won't let that happen...

even at that point in the game, he's already traumatized. by the time the CCOs arrive to take him away, he's putting his hands in the air, reproaching, physically and vocally surrendering, not even struggling as they shove him to the floor and bust his nose in. all he does is cough and whimper. certainly, his fear of guns is at fault for some of this behavior, but he's had moments in front of guns during heatwave, and he was never this passive and helpless.

i also think it's important to note the sorts of CCOs that come to arrest jeremy during the finale. they're crisis response units. frequently dispatched to handle matters surrounding an individual's mental health. and while it could just be a narrative choice, meant to contrast with advance's seeming goodness with it's forceful reality, i do think there's also a very likely chance that advance/julia selected this team on purpose.

jeremy donaldson is not above taking his own life. we all know this. we've all seen this. jeremy does a very bad job at handling his emotions, and they can quickly boil over to a breaking point where he isn't in the proper state to make good decisions.

lots of people think, in the jeremy's injustice ending, that betterment killed him. and that could very likely be true. but i think there's also room to consider that jeremy was so hopeless, he killed himself. especially since making him hopeless- through allying him with alan james by playing the tape during heatwave- is what you have to do to get him to try to shoot himself in the first place.

regardless of how you slice it, jeremy is in a state of absolute misery during his repeated stays at betterment. and misery breaks that man down into his absolute worst self.

betterment jeremy, to me, lives in a strange state, where he's too scared to want to die, but too miserable to want to live. the less he thinks about his life- about what he had to go through- the more tolerable things are for him. i think he spent a lot of time at betterment completely dissociating, and i think he's very prone to doing it after being released. it's difficult for outsiders to tell he's doing it at all (considering he's kind of... always quietly staring off into space...) but you can normally tell by the way he's breathing. it's a little less labored when he loses himself...

after being released from betterment, jeremy finds himself enjoying 'popcorn fun' a lot more than usual. he doesn't bring himself to read very often- head hurts too much for that, usually. he does whatever's easiest and most distracting, which is usually watching tv, if it isn't losing himself in his thoughts (or lack thereof).

i do think he would enjoy tangible activities though, like cooking. it's not super complex to the point where his mind starts to get cluttered, but it helps him focus in on something in particular, he gets to move around and use his hands, and at the end of it he gets to eat something nice, and that's always good since he forgets to do that sometimes. it's one of his healthier habits post-betterment.

i also think that jeremy has a lot of anxiety surrounding how people perceive him. it seems like he was drilled in one way or another to be as advanced-alligned as possible, which probably involved completely shuffling his world view. i don't have a doubt in my mind that the old jeremy is in there somewhere, raising his cynical arguments in his shrill little voice. but all of that is jumbled, reformatted, or discarded before it reaches his conscious mind.

it's why he pauses for so long between conversations. of course, the medication is partially to blame for that, but most of it is him vetting every single sentence before it leaves his mouth. even if what he's about to say is completely innocuous, he gets paranoid that he'll say something 'wrong', and something bad will happen.

what elsee.... OH WAIT. OKAY. this is kind of unrelated but also related. since we're on the subject of betterment. as someone who perceives jeremy as aroace, i don't really know how betterment would handle that sort of thing. especially considering the current timeline, both in regards to how ace people were perceived at that time in our society, plus the fact that julia is really gunning for people to have kids so that the whole territories don't just go extinct.

a part of me wondered if some of that propaganda had to do with having families. whether betterment would make the argument that "you were so depressed because you're alone. find a partner and have kids, that will make you happier for sure. without them you'll be miserable for the rest of your life". and whether jeremy would believe it- or have any other choice but to believe it.

even if he did believe it, i think it would make him miserable. that man isn't built for sex or romance... no amount of shoving a round peg in a square hole- if you pardon the contextually colorful metaphor- is going to make him any happier, regardless of what advance tells him.

-- Ok so usually what I've been doing is just thinking of random moments and then writing a story about them and building the universe that way so this will be very helpful!!!

-- Cliff had his shop, Baxter's dad was looking for local investment opportunities and they went into business together. I do not know anything about business, but they became ~business partners~ so Cliff would come over to the Ward house sometimes and he'd bring Cove, that's how he met Baxter

-- They were both only 13, so Baxter isn't going to do the very forward flirting that made Cove not like him so much in canon Step 3, so they make friends. In canon, Baxter likes Cove so much, he thinks he's so sweet and good so that's true here. He becomes Baxter's confidante, he's the only one he tells about MC.

-- Cove and MC never have a thing, but they are good friends! Close enough that when the business relationship between Baxter's dad and Cliff sours (Cliff finds out that he is NOT a good person and is fine with his business taking a little hit so that he doesn't associate with him anymore) Cove can go hang out with MC and Baxter can show up without Wards getting into a tizzy.

-- Which, btw, Wards haaaaate MC's moms with a passion for so many reasons, the list gets longer as the years go by. The reason they let Baxter hang out around there is because 1, Baxter is kind of a pain in the ass and would pester them to the ends of the earth if they didn't let him go, and 2, it's a little obvious if they don't let their kid hang out with the kid with two moms and they don't want to be THAT loud about their bigotry. They have plenty of remarks about MC's family to share behind closed doors.

-- Cove doesn't get all "no free time only school/sports" like Derek does, so there's never really a lull in the friendship. MC is Baxter's best friend, but Cove is high up there too.

-- Cove's route will obviously be a lot of beach stuff. Baxter is still scared of the ocean, so this is something you can share with Cove. It's a little hard to think of parallels between Derek's route and AU Cove's route because Derek's is all about his big family, but that first summer with Cove is fun and it keeps being fun after :)

-- Derek is different in Swap AU in that by the time he's 19, he hasn't had years of crushing on MC, he's just a guy that comes to town for training and happens to move across the street from a lil cutie. He's confident in his looks like he is in canon, and he's fine with some flirting in that way that very nice pretty people can be. He'll obviously be much busier than Baxter was in canon Step 3 and he can't drop everything for MC, but he does have a good time with them and Baxter.

-- He'd ask MC to take him sightseeing, and to go camping instead of to big fancy mountain lodge. He'd also be good with leading the search for an ice cream truck. He wouldn't be good with the themes, but he'd absolutely help with Miranda's party and wouldn't have the hang up where he felt like he couldn't stay for the festivities.

-- He actually wouldn't have many of his canon hang ups to deal with here because he's on his own. That means you get a free-wheeling, footloose and fancy free Derek, and how nice!

-- Cove is around forever, he's just that bud. He never stepped back, you never lost touch, he's the friend that lies in a different neighborhood.

-- Derek will keep in touch too, no need for a big reunion in five years!

-- Baxter and MC get married, Cove is Baxter's best man. It would be very cute if Derek's was MC's, but they have more people to choose from (Liz, etc.)

but oh gosh i really hate that scenario because my personal headcanon and ideal hope for if giann ever returns is that he takes up CEO mantle again, i agree with you!

though my personal hc differs though in the sense that....i also think giann kinda liked his job before he went missing. he didnt like how itd take too much time away from time he couldve spent with marius, he didnt like the very slimy environment of corporate backstabbing, but he liked heading Pax. he liked making it better than it already was.

i think this because:

1) i just think its neat!

2) austin has noted that giann is different from himself and from marius (said in a scene in marius' sweet chapter 4). he and marius tend to be more closed off, keep more of their cards close to their chest, are less trusting. meanwhile, giann was described by him as somebody more emotional and even naive.

and yet in spite of that, canon has showed us giann did a tremendous job heading Pax during his run and was wildly praised by the public for his leadership. so he was different. but different worked. he was dang good at whatever he was doing. i think giann's Difference in how he operates in the business world is a fitting change to the cycle of wariness and endless distrust that made austin and then marius The Way They Are because of the business world, itd mean a more open and transparent future for Pax

....and also because giann would wanna relieve marius of the role that hes been carrying for years

like i know that in a sense, giann taking pax back isnt as ~subversive~ as marius continuing to head it. but idk.....from what i know of giann—both his immense love and protectiveness over marius and his own objective success at being CEO—i would quite dislike it for him to go “bro… you’ve run it so well. better than i ever could… you should continue as the ceo…”

i see him more going like.... "bro....youve run it so well and im so proud of you. you ran it better than i ever could, and thats given me one hell of a standard to live up to. but you can rest now. thank you for helping me. now, it's my turn to help you."

and then marius goes for a phd in art history and becomes an art professor able to pursue his passions and teach it to likeminded individuals while also still moonlighting as "Z" because wouldnt that be such a fun secret identity for an art professor to have HAHA. THATS WHAT MY HEART WANTS!!!!

I think my thing is BT shippers not only make a fake Tommy to fit their narrative but also fake scenarios. And I will try to make sense of what I mean.

As a buddie shipper... It's not technically Canon, but yes, I highly believe Buddie shared a bed or sleeping space during quarantine. You had 4 adults, makes sense. Would I argue in posts it happened no. But I think we can all agree they shared space while Chim and Hen probably shared the other.

It's not Canon but yes I firmly believe when Eddie was home after he was shot that Buck did camp longer on the couch. He's one of the only ones big enough to assist Eddie. Who Eddie trusts. And maybe it gave relief to Eddie because he also could help with Chris you know.

But I can't explain it so maybe you can say it better for me. After years of watching these 2, I can easily insert things I think possibly happen between them because logically, it makes sense in their relationship dynamics and personalities.

I had to block BT not because I hate the posters, its that yes they were maybe inferring as I have in the past but there wasn't a origin story and in turn they were calling me the crazy one..

And to add insult to injury. At the time, I was being called crazy because Tommy is clearly the love of Bucks life and better than all female LI..... They didn't have yet access to the deleted seen where Tommy admits they are fuck buddies. I might agree to logical debate if you move your goal post back to reality.

Sorry if that was too much of a ramble.

Personally, I think everyone got too excited that Buck was kissing a guy, and things got out of hand, I've been saying this for a while, the show didn't give any development to the relationship, but since Tommy is pretty much a blank slate they had a whole month to play with before canon gave them anything, everyone went crazy with the headcanons. Obviously, things got out of hand with the cameos and Lou "confirming" said hc and even adding in his own, that kinda made a portion of them decide that they know more than the actual show and that portion refuses to let that go when discussing canon. I'm never gonna tell anyone that they can't hc something about a character or relationship, but we reached a point where they were demanding we treat their hc as canon when we have nothing to back them up. We can't really infer the relationship developed offscreen when what we have on screen is not painting Tommy in a good light in that relationship. And the show made very purposeful choices to not develop it and to make sure we know that they aren't a good fit, but for some reason since we are dealing with a man now, that kinda just flew over people's heads. It happens. And we, we are all assuming some things, but we have enough on canon to back up most claims, but either way, I'm not gonna go pick a fight with someone if they don't agree with the way I think Buck and Eddie shared a bed during quarantine or that Buck has a drawer on Eddie's dresser or that they have clothes they don't know belong to who first because it kept getting swapped in their shared locker. But there is a portion of them that will go to war if you don't agree with some of the stuff they say, and that's a lot of the issue there. We could've all been playing in our own sandboxes if these things where somehow not agreeing with what they are hc means you are delusional or crazy or worse.
