I've been thinking a lot about the Valdez family—and not just Sammy, Esperanza, and Leo—so I decided to make my own in depth Valdez family list with headcanons (obviously, since some we don't even know the name of)

Sammy Valdez was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was the first in his family to be born in the United States, his parents having immigrated from Mexico right before he was born.

Sammy's wife (Leo's bisabuela), Otília Delgado-Fuentes, was born in the Dominican Republic and immigrated to Houston as a teenager with her parents. She met Sammy at his shop when her car broke down and the rest in history. She ended up working the business side of Sammy's shop, selling spare parts, as well as putting in transactions for what Sammy was doing.

In addition to Sammy Jr. (I'm just gonna be calling him Samuel for the sake of simplicity for now on), I think they had three editional kids: the others being Emilio, Aleyda, and Evangelina. Samuel was the eldest, followed by Aleyda, Emilio, and finally, Evangelina.

Samuel, as well as Evangelina, followed in their father's footsteps and became mechanics. Aleyda became a writer, and Emilio helped his mother run the business portion of the shop. Both Emilio and Aleyda decided to attend college, while Samuel and Evangelina did an informal trade school under their father's tutegale.

Aleyda moved away to New York and married a fellow latine writer named Salvador García, and barely keeps in touch with the family. They have no children.

Emilio married a woman named Martha Delacruz and had three children—Silvia, Estefania, and Enrique.

Evangelina never married, instead focusing on her career. She was Esperanza's favorite person when Esperanza was a girl, and her biggest inspiration, and also adored Leo. I haven't decided why or how, but unfortunetely, Evangelina died sometime before Esperanza, because I'm convinced she would have fought tooth and nail to get custody of Leo if she was there.

Samuel, of course, had two daughters, Rosa and Esperanza. Samuel married Margarita Rosa Iglesias-Perez, a Mexican immigrant who went to Houston to attend college.

Rosa, in addition to Raphael (who Leo mentions in Mark of Athena, I believe) has two more children, María Rosa and Carmen with her husband, Matías Cisneros-Cortez.

Esperanza, obviously, has just Leo, who is the eldest of Sammy's great-grandkids, as stated in Mark of Athena. Some childhood Leo Valdez headcanons of mine is that he attended a bilingual school up until third grade (we know why third grade) and that he had to be taken to another classroom during math because he would act out due to boredom. (He has ADHD and was at a college math level at 8, of course he'd be bored.)

These next three are future, or my headcanon for Leo's kids, so if you were just here for the possibly canon-compliant ones, that's over! I'm totally fine with people using the previous name headcanons in fics without giving me credit, as it is just names, but I'd appreciate it if people tell me about some Valdez family fics! I'm always looking for some, and have only read like one or two. However, for Leo's children, if you take more than just their names, I'd appreciate the tag. I've had them since like 2016, and am really attached, even though some details have changed a lot since then (example being, back then, I thought canon couples were infallible and I had to make them Leo and Calypso's kids, when now, they're just Leo's).

This part is detailed in my Solangelo future fic, Surprise? but my favorite hc of all time is aro/ace Leo who adopts demigods to give them the childhood he deserved. So all three are demigods (children of Hephaestus as well, because I think that's fitting) and Leo's a single father who gets help from everyone at Waystation.

The eldest is Madalena Esperanza, who has her own POV in Surprise? in Chapter 7: Leo and Calypso's Garage: Auto Repair and Mechanical Monsters. She was born in Portland, Oregan, and her mother died of childbirth. With no other living family members, Hephaestus took her to Waystation to see if Emmie and Jo could take her (as Leo was still in college, at 20), but Leo saw her and instantly realized that he wanted to adopt her because he saw bits of baby him in her, and had the funds to as he was working part time at a local mechanic shop on weekends that paid decent, and Emmie and Jo were able to help. Madalena was the name her mother had planned to give her, and Leo added Esperanza when he officially adopted her. Random fact about her is she grows up to be an Olympic level skateboarder, and Leo built her a few pipes to practice.

Next, also in Surprise? is Leo's middle, Aidan. His story is detailed almost completely in the fic—his bio mother didn't want a kid and was going to give him up for adoption so Hephaestus went to Leo to ask him if he wanted to adopt another kid. Leo said yes, and him and Lena went to Illinois to pick him up from the hospital. His bio mother also didn't want to name him, so Leo and Lena did.

Finally, not in Surprise? is Emilia. Leo's youngest, who's seven years younger than Aidan, and thirteen younger than Lena, so she's not present in the fic, but is special in my heart. Her bio parent, like Lena's, died in childbirth, and Hephaestus once again asked Leo if he had room for one more kid. She was born in Miami, Florida.

So, there's my Valdez family tree! Again, feel free to use everyone in your fic, but Lena, Aidan, and Emilia are my children so I'd like a tag for them.

"Hello, Hazel Levesque."

This simple word teared the sob out of her throat.

Hazel was standing in a familiar surrounding again, Leo's hands in hers, but still, she never felt so out of place.

She wanted to go back there, on this porch, with Sammy.

Sammy. No matter how old he was, he was still the same. The same smile, the same eyes, the same spark. And with Leo standing right before her, she could finally see how different of him he was, in reality.

He was unique, and she lost him. She lost him because of Gaia, because of her mother, because of Pluto, because of herself... And she lost him to guilt and sadness.

That she could never forgive herself for.

And as the ship was starting to get tossed around, her mind was focused on only one thing. One sentence in one so foreign voice.

"I guess we ran out of time."

Yes. I guess we did, my love.

He was running out of time and he knew it. She was almost done. She seemed to be looking for one last thing but once she'd have it, she'd probably leave to never come back.

No, he couldn't let that chance go. He had to talk to her.

He wasn't known to be nervous in this kind of situation before. He knew how to talk to girls, how to make them laugh. But he couldn't help it, he was scared. Not so scared of them that he was of messing something up.

He had done that before already.

He knew he couldn't let this story rule his life. He had been told so. To forget and move on. But it wasn't so easy when just one story, one girl had defined his whole life until now and was the reason thanks to who he had what he had. And didn't have what he didn't have.

No, no ! He had to have faith. Deep down he knew he was being lead toward something great. He knew he left an happiness for another. Maybe this girl was it. Maybe he should stop doubting his gut instinct.

So Sammy Valdez stepped forward and helped his client find what she was looking for. And in the end, they both found much more in each other than they dared to hope.

She laughed so much that it hurt her lungs. The first time she genuinely laughed about him since she learned the truth, and it hurt. But in a good way for once.

"Sammy Jr. ? I don't even know why I'm surprised it's just... Of course he did !" Leo laughed along, though it was more Hazel's that passed onto him.

"The Valdez have ressourcefulness and humour, miss Levesque. Not imagination, as it seems." "Seems like you took it all." "Ah ! That idea I like ! You're right I'm almost as imaginative as I am hot. My son's name will certainly more creative, like...Leon." "Junior is too old school ?" "I don't want the kid to get bullied."

Both their looks softened at this. Gods, Hazel was feeling great. Talking about Sammy became less and less hard with the days, weeks and months, but with Leo's return, it was finally natural and true, for lack of a better word. Looking at him now brought her calm and serenity rather than stress and fear of projecting and hurt them both in the process.

She loved how she now took herself looking at Leo and thinking : 'I'm glad he's in my life.'

'I'm glad he's not Sammy.'

Because Leo was his own person, his own wonderful person.

And now, when she looked at him, she could only see the irony that always almost made her smile a sad smile.

He may not have been the Valdez she expected, but maybe he was the one she needed. Just like her life.

And with friends like hers, Hazel knew she could never regret the life she got in the end. She just hoped Sammy had felt the same.

"Abuelo, tell me a story !"

He sat back. "A story ? What story ?" "About your life before !" "What ? You mean you're not interested in my life 'after' ?"

Her big eyes widened. "What is that, abuelo ?" He leaned toward her like a magician about to confide his biggest tour's secret.

"It's also known as 'sleeping'." She didn't like this answer, which the blow he took from her pillow let him know.

"Tell me a story about love !" "You already know everything about your abuela and me, Esperanzita." "About someone else, then." "Someone else ?" "Abuela had a boyfriend in school, she told me about him." "She told you about Roberto ?" He made a face. Why did she have to go and talk about this idiot to their granddaughter ?

"I asked her to. Can you ? Did you have a girlfriend ?" "One or two, yes." Yeah, maybe he could let the Roberto story retelling slide.

"What about the first ?" "The first ?" He couldn't help the soft smile that appeared on his lips at the reminiscing of those memories that had never left his mind.

"Yes ! What was her name, abuelo ?"

He looked into her big excited eyes and smiled before tapping his knee, letting her hop on.

"Her name was Hazel Levesque and she was a witch, destined to great things."

"HA-ZEL! HA-ZEL!"

In just one clamor of her name, her life had turned upside down once again.

Reyna had left with the hunt and she was now standing in her place.

She didn't know if she should find this funny or sad, but as she stood at Frank's side, before dozens of senators and soldiers, her first thought went toward Sammy Valdez.

Who would have guessed that she'd end up here ? He probably would have. He always seemed to know that she was destined to great things.

She should have believed in him back in the days.

As she was reminiscing on all of that, she reached Bacchus' gardens, just as the sun was disappearing behind the hills. The evening air was hot, the sky was dressed with yellow, orange and pink, and the flowers' scent was tickling her nose.

So many things that always brought her back to the same memory, one that wasn't even hers.

Leo would take care of it all. He would take care of her. The older Valdez knew it without even knowing how he did. Maybe he would be the one to find the right thing to say, like he never had.

He was so good with words, and yet he never could bring himself to say those ones aloud when it came to this peculiar girl. So, as always when she was on her mind, he tapped. The same message, over and over again : I love you.

Because yes, he did love Hazel Levesque, this silly, dreamy, idealized kind of love.

And he never got to say it to her. Just like he never got to say goodbye.

So as Esperanza was bringing his stunt double back inside, Sammy looked at the horizon with a certainty that could almost have made him convince himself that he was, in fact, loosing his mind. But as if Hazel was standing right on the other side of this beautiful sunset, he whispered in a voice full of love, grief, joy, hope and humor :

"Goodbye, Hazel Levesque."

“AN EVENING WITH PILITA” AT THE THEATRE AT SOLAIRE

Pilita Corrales, Asia’s Queen of Song, icon and legend of the Philippine entertainment industry for the past 6 decades, goes on stage at 8 p.m. on November 17, 2017 at The Theatre at Solaire for “An Evening with Pilita”.  

With Ms Corrales in the one-night-only concert will be the immensely popular AMP Band and the inimitable string section of the ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra with Mel Villena as musical director. The exceptional combination of musicians will provide the big band sound of the 50s and 60s and a taste of the classics.

The show will profile nuggets of time in Pilita’s life and career.  She will be joined by her daughter Jackie Lou Blanco and son Ramon Christopher Gutierrez, both TV and motion picture personalities in their own right; her granddaughter Janine Gutierrez, and her old friends and colleagues in the industry Nikki Ross and Angie de la Cruz, better known as the Wing Duo.

Pilita started singing in Spanish as a host of the radio show “La Taberna” on KZPI. Her career took off in Australia where she became the first woman to top the Australian pop charts with a song called “Come Closer to Me.” She was the first artist signed up by Astor Records. There is even a street in Victoria named after her.

In the early 60's, Pilita was back in Manila to pursue a musical career in her home country. At the same time as she recorded albums in Spanish, English, Tagalog, and Cebuano, Pilita was signed up by ABS-CBN to host and star in a long-running television musical show called “An Evening With Pilita.” 

Ms Corrales has performed locally and abroad with stars like Sammy Davis, Jr., the Beatles, Bob Hope, Pat Boone, Frank Sinatra, and Julie Andrews. 

When asked how she feels about the much-anticipated November 17 concert, Pilita says: “It is exciting. I will be at The Theatre at Solaire, which is beautiful and the sound is world class.”  

Pilita was given the well-deserved title “Asia’s Queen of Songs” when she became the first Filipino to win in an international music festival, named the Best Performer at the 1st Tokyo Music Festival in 1972.

She has received every award imaginable in the local music industry. All of these accolades and milestones in her colorful and celebrated life and career will be at the center of “An Evening With Pilita.- the concert. “

Carlo Orosa the show’s director explains: “We want to show a side of Pilita that a lot of the young people have not seen. She is the first Filipino singer to actually showcase the Filipino talent internationally. She is both an icon and a legend.” 

Pilita is elated to be the next music icon to perform in The Theatre at Solaire’s continuing Icons Series after the sold-out and well-reviewed concerts of Basil Valdez and Celeste Legaspi. “The feeling is like you’re on cloud nine.”
