Gwyn Caolán | Master | 290 | Baobhan Sith | Versatile
"How can I tell you the truth if I don’t know which version you want to hear?"
Gwyn was barely twenty when the war between vampires and fae first began, a devious young Seelie who had just crossed into the mortal realm and was delighted to discover how easy its inhabitants were to play with. From his perspective, the entire conflict was a monumental waste of time. Why bother with conquering another world when they had the entirety of the Faerie Realm to themselves, and the rest of humanity to bother besides? Gwyn much preferred to be a trickster than a tyrant, but alas, he was not the one who got to decide.
So he was pulled into the bitter fighting of the war, dragging his feet the entire way. He ran messages and scouted out their enemies’ movement, darting between realms and generally only participating as little as he could get away with without his loyalties to his court being questioned. After nearly forty years of this though, he realized that a world-spanning war between immortals would not end swiftly and from then began crafting his own plans. Green and short-sighted as the Seelie was, to Gwyn the answer seemed simple: it wasn’t so important in the end who won, as long as it was over. If the fae lost, they would simply take a half century or so in the Faerie Realm to let things cool off, then creep back in as they always did.
He took advantage of long solo expeditions through contested territories and began quietly leaking information to the other side in the hopes of hurrying things along and miraculously managed to not get himself caught in the twenty years that followed before the fae finally buckled and were scattered. For the briefest moment, Gwyn could finally celebrate, anticipating the much-desired return to the way things were before. What the fae hadn’t counted on was what his vampiric contacts would decide to do with him once his usefulness had run out. Gwyn was a wild card, a loose end, and what better way to manage him than letting his own people take care of the problem?
The portals between realms were slammed shut and the Seelie’s betrayal was made public. It was only a matter of time before they would find him and treason, Gwyn knew, could only ever be answered with death. With no other options in sight, he accepted his fate, despairing of the thought of a future of endless running, far too weak to fight back against the elder fae. Instead, Gwyn dropped any pretense of stealth and blazed a vibrant trail of one-man debauchery across the cities of post-war Europe instead, seeking as much diversion as possible before his old comrades got their revenge.
In the end though, it was a vampire who found Gwyn first. The stranger saw beneath Gwyn’s flashy act how desperately the fae longed for life, straining to grab at all the beauty and pleasure he could before it was robbed from him. Roland de Rochefort, however, had better plans for the Seelie than wallowing in suicidal decadence and with no expectation of any future, Gwyn was remarkably easy to convince to submit to the bite.
Riding high on the giddy thrill of undeath, Gwyn convinced his sire to linger long enough to lure in the Seelie who had been narrowing in on him. All his fear had been scoured out and replaced with rage and Roland was treated to an intimate display of exactly how different his new fledgling was from other vampires when Gwyn set on their prey with claws rather than fangs, sharp as razors and strong enough to turn Gwyn’s old fellows to fine gore by the time the blood haze rose from his mind.
What followed for the newly fledged hybrid was twenty years of learning to control his new appetites, and some of his old ones. Despite many long and boring lessons on discipline, Gwyn remembers these years as happy ones, drunk on newfound power and his second chance at endless life. In rare moments, his mind would swing wildly from bliss to despair, manic with grief at the body he’d lost and the realm that had been closed to him. Then, the episodes would flee just as suddenly they came, especially as years passed and his sire learned the warning signs, leaving Gwyn exhausted but cheerful once more.
Once deemed ready, the hybrid struck out alone again, eager for travel and to be out from under Roland’s wing. He gloried in the freedom he had desired from the very beginning; what loss was the Faerie Realm with the whole world offered up on a platter to his whims, beholden to no court or sire? Gwyn still forges his travels based on impulse known only to him, dreading settling or routine and instead swinging sporadically back into the lives of those he enjoys whenever the mood strikes, eager to stick his nose in whatever seems most exciting to his lingering fae sensibilities. With Krovs swimming now with rare beasties and an intriguing number of infamous vampires, there’s no better place to chase that excitement he craves.
Positive Traits: Affable, creative, energetic, inquisitive
Negative Traits: Erratic, manipulative, hedonistic, nosy
3 turn-ons: Roleplay, public sex, bloodplay
3 turn-offs: Bathroom kinks, humorlessness, extreme age play

Kin Season 1 Superlatives
I'm just about ready to reignite my Daredevil obsession, but before my page becomes flooded with pics of my favorite vigilante in black pjs…
I thought I’d do one last Kin post to close out my recaps, at least until Season 2. Here are my superlatives for season 1 of Kin. It was much harder than I expected.
Favorite Character: Michael Kinsella.
You won’t believe it but I really had to think this one through. How much of my love for Michael has to do with Charlie Cox? Have I been blinded by those sad, puppy-dog eyes? Amanda is my close second and her storyline and development is just as satisfying. In the end there are a few things that put Michael in the top spot. The first is Anna. Michael and Anna’s relationship is one of my favorite things about the series. More on that in a minute. Second, I love how Michael is portrayed. It’s a conscious decision to make the family hitman a quiet, grieving man, who is soft and shy on the outside but a stone cold killer who struggles with expressing himself and with detachment on the inside. His health problems provided some of the most intense moments of the series and he has wonderful, multidimensional relationships with Anna, Jimmy, Amanda, Birdy, Jamie and Frank. He’s a good character who is well acted and I cannot wait to see what happens with him next season.
Least Favorite Character: It’s Frank.
Of course it is. I’ve said it before and I stand firm in the assertion, rewatching is not kind to Frank. It’s not that Frank is uninteresting or poorly written. He has a great story arc and Aidan Gillen does a wonderful job with a pretty thankless character. Frank is written as a man who worked hard to secure his place in the family. He kept them well respected and relevant, but failed to provide the might needed to survive. Even before the events at the beginning of the season he had a fraught relationship with Eamon. Once the shit hit the fan, Frank reacted in the worst way possible. He panicked, stopped looking for solutions, and took out his frustration on the people around him. He was pathetic, sexist and incompetent, and a terrible, emotionally abusive dad to Eric.
Favorite Villain: Eamon Cunningham.
Eamon is frustrating, foolish, stubborn and full of hubris. He’s entirely dependent on his ability to intimidate and outright murder his enemies. The minute someone bites back he’s floundering, with no choice but more force. He’s the Goliath to the Kinsella’s David. He’s also a sucker for his ex wife and his little son in Spain. Eamon is a great antagonist and Ciarán Hinds plays him well.
Character Who Benefited Most from the Recaps: Jimmy Kinsella.
The slow watch I did for the recaps, where I paid special attention to details and wasn’t doing ten other things while I watched, was so good for Jimmy. There are a lot of small details to his performance, and most often they involve him loving and reaching out to his loved ones. He’s an incredibly emotional character and the dichotomy between him and Michael is fascinating.
Biggest Fuck Up: Eric Kinsella.
Character or plot point, it’s all about Eric. He’s a loveable fuck up, but a fuck up all the same. His horribly planned, anger fueled drive by was undoubtedly the biggest fuck up of the season.
Character Who Made the Largest Impact in the Least Amount of Screentime: Bren Kinsella.
His appearance answered so many questions I didn’t even know I had concerning Michael, Jimmy and Frank. He’s the missing piece in the Kinsella crime family and I cannot wait to see more of him.
Character I Want to See More Of: Birdy Goggins nee Kinsella
Birdy played a supporting role in most of her relationships this series, whether she was subtly manipulating Michael or bolstering Frank. My favorite scenes of hers, though, were her conversations with Eamon. First at Jamie’s funeral, when she outright asks him to give the Kinsellas Caolan Moore and second, when she approaches him in the parking garage and tries to broker a peace. I want to see more of Birdy when she’s not propping up other characters. I am also dying to see her, Frank and Bren.
Favorite Ship: Michael/Amanda/Jimmy.
Aka my favorite slow moving disaster. Every combination of these three is a delightful mess.
Favorite Family Relationship: Michael and Anna.
This is a show about family, so the options are many. In the end I have to go with Michael and Anna. They are the same flavor of awkward ducks and seeing them circle each other and try to carve out a relationship is stressful and endearing. Big props to Hannah Adeogun for mirroring some of Charlie’s mannerisms for Michael, right down to his awkward smile.
Most Shocking Death: Jamie Kinsella.
In retrospect there’s enough foreshadowing packed in that first episode that his death should have been visible from the moon, but on first watch I found it truly shocking.
Favorite Storyline: The Kinsellas do a robbery.
From Frank’s mischievous smile when the idea is first brought up, to Eric and Jimmy’s delight at Michael’s participation, to Michael’s dry delivery when threatening Con, to the family celebration when the job is done, this was a delight all around. Was it a good idea? Probably not. But everybody loves a heist and I love that this one hinged on Con Doyle loving his son more than he cares about Eamon’s drugs.
Least Favorite Storyline: Eamon and Angela go to an ayahuasca ceremony.
I love Angela and the hold she has on Eamon. I even love getting to see more of Eamon’s life outside of him terrorizing the Kinsellas. It’s the muddy symbolism, man.
Saddest Scene: Jimmy's eulogy.
This is a sad, sad series. After much contemplation, I’m gonna go with Jimmy’s eulogy at Jamie’s funeral for the saddest scene. It is a certified tearjerker. Emmett J Scanlan does a tremendous job in his portrayal of grief, with his strained, tearfilled smiles as he struggles to talk about his dead son. We also get a brief recognition of the pain Michael has caused his own daughter (which leads to another sad scene). The scene ends with a cut to Amanda with a crying Jimmy beside her, who has finally surfaced long enough from her own grief to see how painful this is for Jimmy.
Most Satisfying Scene: Amanda ferrets out the mole.
Everything about this plan is immensely satisfying to me. The minute Amanda suspects someone is working against the family, she uses her deductive reasoning to figure it out. She confronts Kem at her house, with Jimmy unknowingly on standby, and weasels the truth out of him. Look at that shot. Awesome.
Most Stressful Scene: Michael freaks out during the hit on Caolan Moore.
So many options and almost all of them have to do with Michael. I’m going with the first scene to truly stress me out in the series, Michael trapped in the bar after he kills Caolan Moore. It ends with him face-to-face with Mini Michael, the hitman who killed Jamie, but he can't focus his eyes to shoot. So stressful.
Most Cathartic Scene: Michael yells at Amanda after the cafe shootout.
If you’re looking for catharsis, this may not be the series for you. There is, however, one scene that really brings it home. You know the one. It’s Michael screaming out his feelings after the shooting at the cafe. If ever a character needed a moment to release his emotions, it’s Michael.
And that's all she wrote. Feel free to post our own, or say if you agree or disagree. The list I used is below. Hope to see you next season!

so my barbarian (Elanon's complicated boyfriend) is a selkie named Caolan and he's a Beast path barbarian. fights exclusively with his own natural weapons, mainly claws and occasionally bite. he's a big softie and uses his strength to protect people. as a couple he's definitely the sensible one and kind of balances out Elanon's impulsiveness with a hold on let's think about it for a minute kinda thing. He's a chaotic good bleeding heart and has kind of set up in his little territory of ocean to look after the place and rescue any hapless adventurers or sailors that get into trouble.
He and Elanon actually met when Elanon wandered into a sea hag's lair on the coast and got wreckt and he was lucky Caolan was nearby and followed a bit behind, expecting that this lil green elf was probably not aware of how dumb he was being. He ended up saving his life and looked after him as he recovered from almost dying quite horribly and the two grew close and became romantically involved.
Elanon gets restless in one place for too long so they travelled the Feywild together for some years, but Caolan was getting more and more homesick and couldn't bear to be away from the ocean he's connected too for too long and had to go back. They couldn't figure out a way that either one of them wouldn't be unhappy, so they sort of went long distance with the sort of agreement that they could both see other people if they wanted to while they're apart but they'd visit eachother whenever they could and are still very much in love, it's just circumstances that are difficult.
Elanon's the sort of, more polyamorous of the two. Like he definitely has the capacity to love more than one person in that way and has had flings over the years, he's very changeable and takes a liking to someone for a while and then gets bored and moves on, he hasn't met anyone yet who he actually wants a relationship with, it's mostly just passing fancies and whims. Caolan is sort of okay with the arrangement but is definitely a bit less enthusiastic about it, there's maybe a little jealousy that he hasn't talked to Elanon about, because when they see eachother it's not super rare but it's been a while and he never wants to ruin the time they have by broaching the subject. They have some issues they need to talk about, but the main thing is they both care for eachother very deeply, and Caolan would be very upset to learn about how much danger Elanon is in rn that he can't protect him from 🥺
#oc talk#i love them both and i lowkey am thinking about Caolan being my backup if elanon dies cause that would be some juicy drama#the only issue is id need to clear a selkie race concept with my DM#ive made one its basically Triton but replace amphibious with the lizardfolk hold breath ability#and replace the spells or the animal communication with a limited wildshape that can only be used to be a seal#and only if hes got his skin#it doesn't seem unbalanced to me like its minor changes that honestly are less strong than base triton imo#especially if i swap the spells for the seal shape thats such a niche thing but its all for flavour more than power#ive never played a barbarian before cause usually they dont appeal to me but this character specifically i love

Give me as much as you can (w/o spoilers cause I have a feeling you don’t wanna spoil anything LMFAO)
I seriously want to know everything I can
Caolan’s genuinely becoming one of my favorite characters
I love how it went from joking about silly sex and now he’s a gen fave
Uhhh I don’t wanna spoil like. Too too much especially game wise (the fte thing is the furthest I’ll go) but like
His hair is naturally straight- ve has a whole nightly routine with bed curlers and heating curlers in the morning. Also wicked soft skin, xe also has a killer skin care routine. Smells like pomegranate and orange blossoms
Very good at chess! Also really likes soft cozy games like Stardew Valley and Harvest Moon type stuff but doesn’t get much time to play many video games. Would be a spreadsheet Stardew player and find it relaxing. Would also love games that’s just so much math. Like table top rogs
Scared of guns + minor hearing loss. Not important but he’s been shot before
Uhhhhh Caolan dresses more feminine on purpose so people are nicey.
Lost his virginity young. Also he has no parents. They’re dead. Used to live in a forest for a while. He knows how to forage and make tea with wild plants :3

If I ever had a chance to make my own cartoon, it would be about Irish Knight Alan Ruaidh and a metric ton of fey characters (here with Ash and Caolan).

This is a little random but I'm watching episode 8 of Kin and she's been on mind so let’s talk about Amanda!
It’s no secret she’s one of my favorite characters, second only to Michael. I’ll have even more to say about her in the recap but first I wanted to talk about the transition to her new role in the family. On its face it's a classic corruption arc, but I see it a little differently.
There’s a West Wing documentary special that aired years ago that interviewed former White House staffers and asked them about their experiences working in the highest level of government. This is a strange comparison but hang with me for a minute. In it, Peggy Noonan (a former speechwriter for Reagan, of all people) talked about three phases staffers go through while acclimating to the White House. I was unable to find a transcript so forgive me while I give you the general gist, as told by my shoddy memory.
In the first phase you’re in awe of your surroundings and your colleagues, convinced you’re surrounded by the best and brightest minds and scared you won’t measure up. In the second phase you find your groove and grow confidence in yourself and your role. In the third phase you realize it's all a cleverly disguised clusterfuck and no one knows what they’re doing, they’re just flying by the seat of their pants and trying to make an impact where they can.
We don’t know much about Amanda’s introduction to the family, but I reckon she spent at least some time in that first phase. It’s the one Nikki was just coming out of at the start of the season. If I had to guess, I’d say Amanda’s been living in the second phase for years now. She contributed to the family by running the dealership and its related shady dealings, she had contacts and processes and helped maintain an air of legitimacy. She wasn't naive- she was strongly against Jamie getting involved in the family, after all- but for the most part it was easy for her to turn a blind eye and trust Frank to take care of things. The first episode was 90% Amanda seeing hinky shit and ignoring it.
Then Jamie was killed. Amanda's part in Caolan Moore’s murder and everything that’s happened since has forced her to look closer at everything- how the family functions, Frank’s leadership, Eamon’s leadership, and it’s all a disaster. All these big powerful men are completely winging it, spending a good portion of their time driven by fear and hubris.
It’s one of my favorite things about the show. It would be easy to make a show where everyone’s a mastermind, the plans are complicated and well thought out, and people think ten steps ahead. Instead everyone is messy, plans are enacted with no thought for the fall out, grief and anger drive horrible decision making. Amanda’s seen behind the curtain, and all that’s there is a crabby old man pulling levers.
I'm excited to see what next season has in store. Amanda's had some successes and her blinders are now completely off when it comes to the family's dealings, but she's just as liable to succomb to hubris as anyone. This season left a few threads dangling just waiting to bite the family in the ass, and she'll be considered the one responsible for them now, not Frank (I'm most talking about the dead son of the Spanish drug lord). I hope they continue to showcase her intelligence, even if it's just her pointing out the obvious. I'm just ready for season 2 already!
