âOkay, a descrição.
âE a vocĂȘ, love?
âAcima do imaginado, decerto.

The more I dig into the lore around the Second Kinslaying for my current project, the more I'm fascinated by the detail that it was specifically Dior who killed Celegorm. That's one of the main details we get, we aren't even explicitly told who killed Dior, Nimloth, Curufin and Caranthir, just that they were slain.
Celegorm meets his end at the hands of the son of the woman he tried to marry, the son of the couple he fought against and I just love it when narrative threads come full circle (or parallel one another).
I know opinions differ in regards to the level of sexual or romantic interest Celegorm had in LĂșthien, as well as the exact appearance of Dior, but this is why I love having him look like a male copy of his mother. I love the idea that Celegorm, in a way, sees her face one more time, but this time it's Dior's. I love the idea that the opponent he fights to the death looks like LĂșthien. I love the idea that Dior's face may have been the last thing he saw.
And yes, I also love the idea that Dior may have wanted revenge for what happened to his mother.
If you then put the Silmaril aside for a moment, you can see a more private, personal conflict at the heart of this tragedy: Dior vs Celegorm, though Dior, true to his name meaning "successor", acts as a sort of stand-in for Beren, LĂșthien and Thingol in Celegorm's perception.
It's just... ugh. So very fascinating and emotional and tragic.
#thoughts and feelings#silm meta#headcanons#silmarillion#doriath#second kinslaying#dior#dior eluchil#celegorm#just to be clear: this is not an anti celegorm post or whatever#i love all of these characters for who they are and enjoy their shenanigans

Re: Ep8 fight and a continuation of Galadriel being to Sauron what the Silmarils were to Morgoth.
As the days pass and the episode has simmered, I am not nearly as disappointed as I was after my initial watch. I think it was less about the fight and more about the feeling that Galadriel's arc has been cut prematurely. All of my gripes with the treatment of Galadriel this season are summed up pretty well in this thread here.
But moving on from that, we need to talk about the real elephant in the room...
Galadriel was said to be a central inspiration for the Silmarils creation. Feanor marveled at the light captured in her hair, asked her for just one strand three separate times, and three times she said no. And then, the Silmarils were wrought and eventually stolen:
âFor they were set in the Iron Crown, and treasured in Angband above all wealth; and Balrogs were about them, and countless swords, and strong bars, and unassailable walls, and the dark majesty of Morgoth.â
â The Silmarillion, Chapter 19: Of Beren And Luthien
It's been confirmed by Charlie that this was no attempt at killing her. The entire scene is him toying with her, taking her on a chase because he wants her to snap and give in, to admit he was right all along. Most of all, at Morgoth's side, this is the kind of affection he knew:
So having Sauron use the crown and a long drawn out fight to try and pull a reaction out of her is quite accurate to his character. This brutal and violent approach is how he would have been dealt with when rebelling against Morgoth's orders or even daring to question his master's rule. It is why I said, you can call it his love language. This is as close to intimacy as he can allow himself to get because it's what he knows.
And now we have this claiming of her. Morgoth's crown would be a wound that could fester to an even stronger degree than the one Frodo received from the Morgul blade. A wound that nearly killed him for how deeply it weighed over both his soul and physical body!
I really want to believe that this isn't going to be something completely insignificant. Not only is it in the shape of an eye, but he seems to be able to see her now, through his mind, to haunt her in an even more palpable way than before.

I don't think the story of Beren and LĂșthien is somehow out of place in The Silmarillion. Yeah, most of the Silm consists of sad and tragic tales, but I don't think this makes B&L's story somehow inconsistent with the rest of the book. If anything, it serves as a contrast and elevates the Silm. It in some ways like a fairy tale, but at the same time it does break the conventions of fairy tales. It's about death, Tolkien's central theme, in more ways than most other tales of the Silm are.
It feels like this reading of Beren and LĂșthien as a strange outlier comes out of treating and reading the Silm as a self-contained entity. But it is not. The Silm is still very much a part of Tolkien's legendarium, and despite the difficulties he had in writing and editing it, you can't really deny the ways it's connected and essential to Lord of the Rings.
And if you look at LOTR, the story of Beren and LĂșthien appears very early in the Fellowship of the Ring. Aragorn sings their tale to the hobbits as they are spending the night by Weathertop, afraid of the Ringwraiths. Aragorn speaks of it as a sad tale that may nevertheless lift up the hobbits' hearts.
This, I think, is an important clue as to where the story will go. In many ways, Sam and Frodo's quest to destroy the Ring mirrors the quest of Beren and LĂșthien to steal a Silmaril - and the two quests are interlocked because B&L's success enables the Silmaril to become the star of EĂ€rendil, which in the form of Galadriel's star-glass will aid Sam and Frodo in some of the darkest moments of their journey. B&L's union also provides Middle-earth with a line of Men who will engage and keep Sauron busy long enough to be defeated, but that's beside the point of this post. The structure and nature of the two quests is similar: here are people who were underestimated by the powerful, going where the great cannot go, and doing things that even the mightiest could not have done. Before Sam and Frodo enter Shelob's lair, they even talk about Beren and LĂșthien's quest, and note how they are in the same story still, as if to set the following scenes and the fight against Shelob in the very tone and memory of B&L's quest.
Beren and LĂșthien's tale may on the surface seem different from the rest of the stories of the Silm. But if you look at the whole of the legendarium, it is more essential than many other tales of the Silm. The problem is that Tolkien himself had trouble constructing the myths and the early history of Arda in a way that would indeed fit the works he had already published at that point, and the uneasiness we may feel about B&L or whichever part of the story is because it was very intricate and Tolkien was not able to finish the story or find a satisfactory way to compile the many versions. Christopher Tolkien's editions of the Silm and HoMe are undoubtedly the result of a Herculean effort but even he knew and admitted there are other ways the fragments of his father's works could have been organised. Even so, there is no doubt of the fact that the tale of Beren and LĂșthien is one of the core threads of the legendarium, and without it, the Silm and the story of Middle-earth would be much lesser.

"The beast roars loud," Thingol said, narrowing his eyes into the distance as they chased said beast. He now noticed the large wolfhound Huan stalk forward, his ears and nose twitching as they got closer to Carcharoth.
"We must go quiet, be unnoticed for as long as we may," he answered his captain. "Then with combined strength when close, strike him down."
With a glance over at their mortal companion, Beleg urged his horse forward. It was not hard to track the beast; it roared and howled and crashed through in the forest in its blind rage.
"We must not be far now." he spoke softly, not wanting to draw attention to their presence. He saw Beren tense out of the corner of his eye. "How should we approach, my lord?"

I've put together a list of some new and old favorites of mine for @genworkjune. Please leave a kudo and comment if you enjoy these!
A Crown of Bones by @thescrapwitch (G, Celegorm & his brothers, Celegorm & Aredhel, 4.2k):
Maitimo and Makalaurë have been lost in the disastrous parlay with Morgoth, and the crown now falls to Tyelkormo. He is greedy and selfish and brash, everything that a Noldor king should not be. Many expect that he will not be up to the task. They are wrong.
A Missive in all Goodwill by @actual-bill-potts (G, Finrod & Galadriel, Finrod & Beren, Finrod & Thingol, 3.3k):
From beloved to bereft: a chronicle of Finrod Felagund's last days as the King of Nargothrond.
Clearer than Clear Water by StarSpray (G, Goldberry, 2.2k):
The world begins with starlight and clear water. The River-daughter opens her eyes to see the stars as shimmering streaks blurring together. It is such a delightful sight that she reaches for them, and gasps when her hand breaks out of the water into cool air. The River-daughter, from her awakening to the sun's first rising.
Hearth Fire by @dreamingthroughthenoise (G, FĂ«anor & Findis, 1.5k):
They will have a home to return to. Findis and Feanor speak before the Flight of the Noldor and share in their grief the best they can.
The Last Queen of NĂșmenor by NevillesGran (G, Tar-MĂriel & EĂ€rendil, 2.1k, major character death):
The Mariner's Star hung low as Tar-Miriel walked out of Armenelos, lower and brighter than she had ever seen it. This was right: it was an omen of the death of kings. Miriel would meet her death on the Holy Mountain, Meneltarma. That was the last decision remaining to her. She was almost too tired to enjoy it, but she had made it nonetheless.
Mercy by @cuarthol (T, Celegorm & Finrod, 3k):
Celegorm has many lessons to teach, not all of them expected or wanted. Finrod has learned the lesson, but perhaps not the one Celegorm thought he was teaching.
More, More, More by @sallysavestheday (G, Aredhel & FĂ«anor, ~600 words):
FĂ«anor tolerates most of his brothers' children. Aredhel, however, he enjoys.
Mother Wolf by @hobbitwrangler (T, Aredhel, Eöl, and Maeglin, 2.1k, graphic depictions of violence):
Aredhel breaks free.
Phantasm by ncfan (G, Aredhel & Maeglin, 1k):
Her child never cries, and he always seems to know when she's coming.
plundered her and stripped what remained by @swanmaids (M, Aerin & OFC, 2.2k, rape/non-con):
When Brodda and his men took Aerinâs hall, they enslaved all of her household and Brodda took Aerin to wife. The morning before the wedding, Aerinâs handmaiden dresses her in her bridal garments.
The Spinner by @searchingforserendipity25 (G, Galadriel, Earwen, Finarfin, and MĂriel, 1k):
Nerwen was very young, when first she asked her father to teach her how to work the spinning wheel.
Things Yet to Be by @polutrope (G, Finrod & Turgon, 1.4k):
Young Finrod reflects on memory, foresight, and storytelling as he recounts the experience of a vision he had as an infant.
Threads by @slightnettles (G, Finduilas & Edhellos & OFC, 1k):
A ficlet on foresight & Finduilas.
Thus our hearts burn, oh brother mine by @melestasflight @runawaymun (G, FĂ«anor & Fingolfin, 1k):
Remember no grievance, as if we were not made to grieve one another, to wound each other as no one else could. For I knew you as deeply as I knew my own self. And could anyone else hurt us better than we hurt ourselves? - FĂ«anor and Fingolfin reunite in Arda Healed.
your veins are empty of dust by @echo-bleu (G, Nerdanel & her sons, Nerdanel & Anairë, 1.7k):
AnairĂ« finds her late one day in her workshop, surrounded by slabs of stone larger than her. Nerdanel is hammering forcefully at one of them, the barest hints of an elven shape already taking form in the marble. Bitter, stinging tears run down her cheeks and into her collar, and her arms ache with exhaustion. The body is only barely sketched, but the face is already chiselled, smooth curves and angular cheekbones. FĂ«anĂĄro emerges out of the marble, looking like heâs about to take life. (Across the sea, her sons lead a funeral.)

Doom comes to Nargothrond.
Bonus art of a scene from song of staying by @halethleia for Tolkien Reverse Summer Bang 2024. Original art prompt is here.
Rating: T Warnings: None Relationships: Gen Characters: Finrod, Beren, Finduilas, Orodreth, Celebrimbor, Celegorm, Curufin, Maedhros, Maglor, Galadriel, Word count: 8,706 Summary: It is said by some that in Valinor, deep in the halls of Mandos among the deep dark places, are miles and miles of tapestries. The lives of the Eldar, inscribed in colored threadsâtheir pasts, their presents, their futures. They hang silently upon the walls of long echoing hallways, only to be seen by those that wander there.
Sometimes, these glimpses are not entirely accurate. A work of art is never truly finished, a life even more so. A slight nudge, a slipped stitch, and the tapestry changes.
What happens when foresight proves false?

LĂșthien was not of the Noldor but the daughter of Thingol (of the Teleri), and her mother Melian was 'divine', a Maia (one of the minor members of the spirit-race of the Valar). Thus from the union of LĂșthien and Beren which was made possible by their return, the infusion of a 'divine' and an Elvish strain into was to be brought about, providing a link between Mankind and the Elder World, after the establishment of the Dominion of Men.
love this statement about the significance of beren and luthien in bringing humans -- the younger children of iluvatar -- together with the firstborn elves, and introducing a thread of the ainur's divinity into them. also! love the explicit mention of "thingol of the teleri" and "melian, a maia" being the parents of luthien, the woman who played such a critical role in such an influential development within the grand scope of arda

Observando Beren e Lustray, ela sorriu. NinguĂ©m vai fazer mal a vocĂȘ, ok? Precisa confiar em mim. â
FLASHBACK
"Seja sincera comigo. O quĂŁo ruim esta a situação?"

A Tolkien Fic Rec
let the gods look down on this and wonder by @dialux & rainforezt - Aredhel-centric, 22.5k, rated T (complete)
This post canon Valinor fic has everything. Aredhel being a flawed badass. Nolofinwean drama. Complex mother-daughter relationships. Come for female-focused Silm Fics, stay for Aredhel breaking Valinor while dealing with her family. Cannot recommend enough.
A Boy, A Girl, And a Dog: The Leithian Script posted to Ao3 by GammaCavy (originally by Philosopher At Large) - LĂșthien/Beren, 593k, rated G (complete)
A retelling of the LĂșthien and Beren in script form based vaguely on Olâ Will Shakes. I rarely read true canon compliant works, but this is worth every heart wrenching second. Itâs funny, poignant, and deserves to be produced as an actual production. I would pay money to see it.
Aurë entuluva - series by @theheirofashandfire - multi pairing mainly Fingon/Maedhros, 589.5k over 17 installments, rated G-M (ongoing)
THIS. This is The Silm Fix-It. Begins with A Thread Unraveled, a Nirnaeth Arnoediad Ground-Hog day style fix-it centered on Maedhros, then expands. The author does a great job with the politics and the fallout of the Nirnaeth being a success and how that changes the rest of the events of the Silm. I especially love her characterizations of Melian, Finduilas, Turgon, and all the Brothers FĂ«anor.
The Last Spring by clothonono on ao3 - Finwëan fam + background Fingon/Maedhros, 26.2k, rated G (complete)
This right here is how I imagine the Family Finwë pre-canon. Fëanor brings his children to visit Tirion for the first time. The tension between the children of Finwë is delicious. The characterization of Fëanor is delicious. The foreboding ending, also delicious. This could be an entire six course meal if it was edible. Also baby Galadriel is amazing and terrifying.
As a Star Upon a Hill by @mynameisjessejk - LĂșthien/Beren & Fingon/Maedhros, 11.9k, rated T (complete)
A fix-it au where Celegorm and Curufin decide to not be assholes, Beren and LĂșthien steal all three Silmarils, and everyone agrees that dads kinda suck. Borderline crack, but such a feel good fic ugh it makes me happy.
Light Touched by whovianhiddlestoner on ao3 - kidnap + peredhel fams, 48.9k, rated T (complete)
Another (relatively) lighthearted fic where everyone who touches the Silmarils get to be Eldritch and Elrond has a lot of family reunions. Mainly set in the third age, ending in Valinor. Beautiful language all around, and also Maedhrosâ hair is on fire. Which is awesome.
The Iron Ring by lulumiche on ao3 - Glorfindel/Maeglin, 39.2k, rated M (ongoing)
Post-canon in Valinor. Maeglin was actually in love with Glorfindel, which no one but Idril knows. Come for the discussions of homophobie in elf society, stay for some of the realest feeling characterizations I have ever read. Seriously, I donât really like Maglor as Lindir but I ate it up here. Also lots of interesting magic.
The Silver Rule by SpaceWall on ao3 - CelebrĂan/Elrond/Gil-galad, 70.4k, rated T (complete)
More post-canon Valinor shenanigans. This time, CelebrĂan argues law, makes friends, and wants her husband back. I love breaking Valinor, and I especially love when Tolkien women do it. And letâs be honest, the Statute of FinwĂ« and MĂriel is utter balogney.
I Do; I Will by @littlewhitemouseagain - Fingon/Maedhros, 22.8k, rated M (complete)
The one in which everyone is on their worst behavior and the sons of FĂ«anor challenge Fingon to duels over his crown. I cannot emphasize enough how this is The Fingon Fic. His flaws are exposed and addressed in such a way that Iâve never seen before. The insights into the FĂ«anorians, especially Mae, are also really super poignant. This deserves so much attention.
Across The Table by Tuginda on ao3 - Gimli/Legolas & Glorfindel/Erestor, 9.5k, rated G (complete)
A conversation between two couples at Aragorn and Arwenâs wedding. Beautiful, sweet, and containing one of my favorite things: crotchety old FĂ«anorian Erestor. Somehow feels like both a conversation about dwarves and elves, and a lovely tribute to the Noldor.
+ 1
of drowning men by bimmyou on ao3 - Isildur/Valandil, 26.5k, rated E (complete)
The best Rings of Power fic Iâve read so far. Nails all of Isildurâs character flaws and gives such an incredible depth to Valandil.

Starlight Enchantment
LĂșthien TinĂșviel, eternally young and beautiful, was like the embodiment of nocturnal light. Her long hair, like streams of black silk, flowed over her shoulders, touching the ground, like the finest threads of mist, cut by moonlight. Her eyes, deep and shimmering like two stars, were imbued with ancient mysteries and profound wisdom, inaccessible to mortals, captivating and mesmerizing those who gazed upon them.
When she walked through the forests of Doriath, nature itself bowed before her beauty. Every movement she made was like a dance, performed to the rhythm of the wind and the whisper of leaves. Flowers blossomed under her steps as if greeting her touch, spreading their petals and filling the air with a sweet fragrance. Majestic trees, framed by dense canopies, seemed to bow to her, allowing her radiant figure to pass through their ancient trunks. Birds, nestled in their homes, took flight and began to sing tender melodies, paying tribute to her magical essence. Even the fiercest beasts calmed peacefully in her presence, acknowledging her as the queen of the forests and fields.
Her face was that of an angel, woven from dreams and light. Delicate, graceful features, soft like rose petals, reflected inner harmony and tranquility. Her smile, barely noticeable but dazzling, was like the first ray of dawn breaking through the nightâs gloom, bringing hope and joy to all who had the fortune to see her. Her voice, clear and melodic like crystal bells, resonated through the forest, filling it with magic and wonders. Listening to her singing, one could forget about time, dissolving in the enchanting sounds and feeling their very soul ascend to the stars.
LĂșthienâs love for Beren was as strong as her magical nature. She was willing to sacrifice everything for him, even her own immortality. Her loyalty and devotion were like the light of a beacon in an endless ocean of darkness, illuminating the path for those who sought true love and sincerity. She endured unimaginable trials and dangers to be with him, her heart ablaze with a flame that was unquenchable and bright. In her eyes was reflected the eternity of their love, boundless and enduring like the stars in the sky.
Every meeting with Beren was for her like a meeting with the sun after a long night, filled with joy and warmth. Their embraces were like the merging of two worlds, two souls destined for each other. Together, they experienced moments of happiness and sorrow, their love was like an eternal song resonating in the hearts of those who believed in miracles and fidelity.
LĂșthien TinĂșviel, unparalleled and great, left an indelible mark in the hearts of those who had the fortune to know her. She became a symbol of endless beauty and eternal love, shrouded in legends and tales that will live on through the ages like an eternal star in the firmament of Middle-earth. Her name will echo in songs and stories passed down from generation to generation, reminding us that true love can overcome any obstacles and carry light through even the deepest darkness.

Hm, deixe-me ver... Ah! ââ o riso tocou-lhe os lĂĄbios. ââ Aquele ali Ă© funcionĂĄrio do aras, o de azul, vĂȘ?

It feels like Jensen wasn't even trying and this was all for Misha. Could Jensen have had a say in this scene - Bobo and Misha cooked this scene up months before Jensen found out. My guess for keeping Jensen in the dark was b/c they knew that he would never agree to do the scene as written. And while they kept Jensen in the dark, they let Misha's merch co. Stands know. Here's the twitter thread where Stands admits that they knew Cass was "gay". : twitter*com/Stands/status/13298175566649
The funniest reactions to 15x18 on tumblr by people who aren't familiar with Supernatural thought Jensen and Misha filmed their scenes separately and on different days, because that's how awkward the scene looked.
Actors generally have little to no say in the scenes they're filming. Personally, I have serious doubts over the stories peddled by Misha that he and Berens concocted this scene months in advance. If you believe Misha that the scene was supposed to read as romantic, then why no build up for 8 months? Because there was no lead up to a fake romantic confession ending because there never was a Master Plan. According to the script, Cas was not outed as gay, heâs finally learned self-acceptance because he doesn't need Dean's validation, and that made him happy. Only Misha pretended there is some romantic secret code in the dialogue because he had merchs to sell, as you noted in the Stand's tweet.
What I think actually happened was Misha figured out Castiel was going to die before the finale. J2 knew the finale before season 15 started filming and they told Misha that Castiel wasn't in the finale. Misha put 2 and 2 together and had that necklace merch made in advance, regardless the outcome of 15x18. Stand can tweet whatever the hell they want once the episode aired and they chose "you're only gay once". Notice the necklace does not directly reference the character or the show, and not just because they are not allowed to sell actual SPN merchs. The necklace is for general use, anybody outside of SPN would think it's just a generic V-day necklace. Misha just "retconned" it for 15x18.
As for Jensen's acting, the script specifically said, "Dean can't reciprocate, but Castiel doesn't need him to" and Jensen did what he was told to according to the script. As you noted, "Jensen wasn't even trying and this was all for Misha."
This was Castiel's grand moment, his final moment before he is killed off. It was supposed to be all about him, and Dean was supposed to be just a supportive spectator. Jensen's acting has always been dependent on a good screen partner playing an interesting character. Â The problem here is Castiel ceased to be an interesting character after season 6, which is why the Dean & Cas scenes became boring and pointless, and then became really awkward in 15x18.

So according to Tolkienâs canon mortals still die in Valinor which makes it seem likely that Frodo and Bilbo would have died before Sam reached them HOWEVER, I think there are a couple ways in which this could not have been the case canonically
A) The Valar only told the Numenorians this to keep them away (like Sauron was saying). This was because the elves and the Valar were concerned about the corruption of Men and also because they would have been depriving them of the Gift of Illuvitar. The Valar take Eruâs decisions pretty seriously so they wouldnât want to go preventing his gift by letting mortals into the Undying Lands, thus they come up with a lie about it. In this scenario we ignore Tolkienâs letter about this because he kept changing his mind in non-fleshed out material
B) Second scenario and to me the most plausible is that Hobbits are not Men. We donât know what their origins are. If they were created to be like Men with the Gift of Illuvitar or if they go to the Halls of Mandos like elves and dwarves or have an entirely different afterlife. Thus since Tolkien does not state the Hobbits afterlife we can interpret it in whichever way and it is entirely possible that Hobbits could remain youthful in Valinor. Given how hardy and healthy they are this would make sense that being in a land of immortals that would rub off on them. Also if you go with the theory that Hobbits are the entwives or somehow descended from elves or dwarves this would also make sense. Perhaps instead of Tol Eressea the Hobbits settle in Yavannaâs pastures.
C) Eru and Manwe could have granted an exception. This scenario takes into account that at the time of sailing all three hobbits were close to death. Bilbo was ancient and barely hanging on by a thread-his lifespan stretched because of the ring and now dealing with the loss of it. Frodo was suffering from three fatal wounds (the Nazgul, Shelob, and the damage the Ring did). I think in addition to his PTSD he likely had severe damage to his brain and heart given all the evil magic he was exposed to and likely would have been close to death as well. Sam sails when heâs quite old as well shortly after his wife passes-suggesting heâs around the normal age for a Hobbit to die, since it doesnât seem Rosie died young and women on average live longer than men. Thus perhaps on the Voyage over Bilbo or Frodo passed and Galadriel and Gandalf made a plea to the Valar and Eru to give all three hobbits another lifetime in Valinor. Because of their destruction of Sauron and the fondness they all showed for the Valar and their creations-this wish is granted. Exceptions were made for Beren and Luthien for finding a Silmaril one can be made for Sam and Frodo for destroying Sauron. Also Tuor is anotber exception so there you go.
Anyway I refuse to accept that Sam and Frodo (and Bilbo) donât all get a happy ending in the Undying Lands even if youâre a stickler for canon they can still live happily ever after.
