Blackcrowing's Master Reading List
I have created a dropbox with pdfs I have gathered over the years, I have done my best to only allow access to documents which I found openly available through sites like JSTOR, Archive.org, or other educational resources with papers available for download.
That being said I ALSO recommend (I obviously have not read all of these but they are either in my library or I intend to add them)
📚 Celtic/Irish Pagan Books
The Morrighan: Meeting the Great Queens, Morgan Daimler

Celtic Cosmology and the Otherworld: Myths, Orgins, Sovereignty and Liminality, Sharon Paice MacLeod
Celtic Myth and Religion, Sharon Paice MacLeod
A Guide to Ogam Divination, Marissa Hegarty (I'm leaving this on my list because I want to support independent authors. However, if you have already read Weaving Word Wisdom this book is unlikely to further enhance your understanding of ogam in a divination capacity)
The Book of the Great Queen, Morpheus Ravenna
Litany of The Morrígna, Morpheus Ravenna
Celtic Visions, Caitlín Matthews
Harp, Club & Calderon, Edited by Lora O'Brien and Morpheus Ravenna
Celtic Cosmology: Perspectives from Ireland and Scotland, Edited by Jacqueline Borsje and others

Do you know which book this is from?
Please reblog the polls, but KEEP IT SPOILER-FREE to make people read the excerpt with an open mind 💖📚 Title and author will be revealed after the poll's conclusion.
Note: this excerpt is too long for Tumblr’s alt text character limit, so for this poll, the alt text is below the read more.
Edit: The results are up here!
It's funny how the nature of an object—let's say a strawberry or a pair of socks-is so changed by the way it has come into your hands, as a gift or as a commodity. The pair of wool socks that I buy at the store, red and gray striped, are warm and cozy. I might feel grateful for the sheep that made the wool and the worker who ran the knitting machine. I hope so. But I have no inherent obligation to those socks as a commodity, as private property. There is no bond beyond the politely exchanged "thank yous" with the clerk. I have paid for them and our reciprocity ended the minute I handed her the money. The exchange ends once parity has been established, an equal exchange. They become my property. I don't write a thank-you note to JCPenney.
But what if those very same socks, red and gray striped, were knitted by my grandmother and given to me as a gift? That changes everything. A gift creates ongoing relationship. I will write a thank-you note. I will take good care of them and if I am a very gracious grandchild I'll wear them when she visits even if I don't like them. When it's her birthday, I will surely make her a gift in return. As the scholar and writer Lewis Hyde notes, "It is the cardinal difference between gift and commodity exchange that a gift establishes a feeling-bond between two people."
Wild strawberries fit the definition of gift, but grocery store berries do not. It's the relationship between producer and consumer that changes everything. As a gift-thinker, I would be deeply offended if I saw wild strawberries in the grocery store. I would want to kidnap them all. They were not meant to be sold, only to be given. Hyde reminds us that in a gift economy, one's freely given gifts cannot be made into someone else's capital. I can see the headline now: "Woman Arrested for Shoplifting Produce. Strawberry Liberation Front Claims Responsibility."
This is the same reason we do not sell sweetgrass. Because it is given to us, it should only be given to others. My dear friend Wally “Bear" Meshigaud is a ceremonial firekeeper for our people and uses a lot of sweetgrass on our behalf. There are folks who pick for him in a good way, to keep him supplied, but even so, at a big gathering sometimes he runs out. At powwows and fairs you can see our own people selling sweetgrass for ten bucks a braid. When Wally really needs wiingashk for a ceremony, he may visit one of those booths among the stalls selling frybread or hanks of beads. He introduces himself to the seller, explains his need, just as he would in a meadow, asking permission of the sweetgrass. He cannot pay for it, not because he doesn't have the money, but because it cannot be bought or sold and still retain its essence for ceremony. He expects sellers to graciously give him what he needs, but sometimes they don't. The guy at the booth thinks he's being shaken down by an elder. "Hey, you can't get something for nothin'," he says. But that is exactly the point. A gift is something for nothing, except that certain obligations are attached. For the plant to be sacred, it cannot be sold. Reluctant entrepreneurs will get a teaching from Wally, but they'll never get his money.
Sweetgrass belongs to Mother Earth. Sweetgrass pickers collect properly and respectfully, for their own use and the needs of their community. They return a gift to the earth and tend to the wellbeing of the wiingashk. The braids are given as gifts, to honor, to say thank you, to heal and to strengthen. The sweetgrass is kept in motion. When Wally gives sweetgrass to the fire, it is a gift that has passed from hand to hand, growing richer as it is honored in every exchange.
That is the fundamental nature of gifts: they move, and their value increases with their passage. The fields made a gift of berries to us and we made a gift of them to our father. The more something is shared, the greater its value becomes. This is hard to grasp for societies steeped in notions of private property, where others are, by definition, excluded from sharing. Practices such as posting land against trespass, for example, are expected and accepted in a property economy but are unacceptable in an economy where land is seen as a gift to all.
Lewis Hyde wonderfully illustrates this dissonance in his exploration of the "Indian giver." This expression, used negatively today as a pejorative for someone who gives something and then wants to have it back, actually derives from a fascinating cross-cultural misinterpretation between an indigenous culture operating in a gift economy and a colonial culture predicated on the concept of private property. When gifts were given to the settlers by the Native inhabitants, the recipients understood that they were valuable and were intended to be retained. Giving them away would have been an affront. But the indigenous people understood the value of the gift to be based in reciprocity and would be affronted if the gifts did not circulate back to them. Many of our ancient teachings counsel that whatever we have been given is supposed to be given away again.
From the viewpoint of a private property economy, the "gift" is deemed to be "free" because we obtain it free of charge, at no cost. But in the gift economy, gifts are not free. The essence of the gift is that it creates a set of relationships. The currency of a gift economy is, at its root, reciprocity. In Western thinking, private land is understood to be a "bundle of rights," whereas in a gift economy property has a "bundle of responsibilities" attached.

Welcome Home x Plushie Reader Headcanons:
Scent Range! 👃
Headcanon: Plushie reader, much like a Fur berry [long forgotten scented plush] or Strawberry Shortcake toys [I don't know if they're still scented nowadays-] has scented fur. Only difference is, their scent changes depending on whom they're interacting with.
Note: the scent is usually very faint and unnoticeable, but it flares up on contact/if you're being patted/ loved on/Happy.
🎨 Wally [+ 🏠 Home]
Scent: mainly Apple pie/ cinnamon apple
🍎 If he's close enough to smell it, he'll get closer to you without even realizing it and press his face into your fur. [🏠 He'll have a peaceful look if he detects the scent.]
🍎 He'll tell you bluntly that you smell good and cling to you. [🏠 Home always compliments your scent whenever you're over]
🍎 Now that you've taught him to sleep, he'll often go to you if he wants to nap or invites you over. [🏠 Home’s pretty much a second/Vacation house for you with how often you're over.]
👁 he'd be mildly upset when you have to leave/or someone else arrives and screws up the scent. [🏠 gets mildly nervous watching you and Wally from afar when other neighbors come around.]
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
🦴 Barnaby
Scent: Bacon/Hot dog
🐶 it's mostly when he really gets you laughing that he'll notice your scent.
🐶 he gets a kick out of it, and playfully starts nuzzling your head.
🐶 sometimes, he'll even nibble your ears playfully to mess with you.
🐶 if he's feeling a bit down, he'll bear hug you and nuzzle your head to cheer himself up. [Succeeds nearly everytime]
🐶 He'd often get hungry from the scent and treat the two of you to a hot dog from Howdy's.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
🪀 Julie
Scent: saccharine sweet/Candy
🧸 Once she catches whiff of it, she'll never wanna let you go.
🧸 She'd bury her face in your fur, murmuring how good you smelled.
🧸 the neighbors would often find her on your shoulders, playing with your ears.
🧸 during sleepovers, she sleeps very close to you, and you wake up the next morning with her atop you.
🧸 Sometimes Frank needs to convince her to get off you.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
🦋 Frank
Scent: Jasmine/Lavender
📚 during a reading session with you, he detected the scent coming off of you.
📚 he found this interesting and wondered how you had such a unique trait.
📚 He certainly feels much calmer with you and that scent around.
📚 at times if something is getting on his nerves, he'll lean into you and let you give him side hugs to steady his nerves.
📚 Sometimes falls asleep leaned against you if you're sitting together.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
🪶 Poppy
Scent: various fresh baked pastries
🍪 during a knitting session, she caught whiff of freshly baked cookies, which is something she didn't remember baking that day. Then she realized it was coming off of you.
🍪 she'd be quite confused at first, but after you assured her it was natural, she actually grew to enjoy it.
🍪 sometimes when you're with her, the other neighbors think she baked something.
🍪 during downtimes, she'd rest her head atop yours, preening your ears gently.
🍪 sometimes she'd fall asleep with her neck slung around your shoulders, like a swan hug.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
🐛 Howdy
Scent: lavender
🛍 when you were assisting him in his shop, he caught whiff of your scent when you passed by him.
🛍 he'd kinda lose focus on what he was doing, as the scent would kind of put him in a mild trance.
🛍 during breaks, he'd hug you with all four arms, nuzzling your head to unwind.
🛍 Sometimes you'd have to remind him of the time to snap him back into focus.
🛍 Frank has caught this, and has since been observing your interactions with Howdy. Even with binoculars sometimes.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
☀️ Sally
Scent: Roses
🎭 She smelled it after a successful performance, when she hugged you with excitement.
🎭 since then she has you sit beside her, either during playwriting, directing or just in general.
🎭 sometimes, she falls asleep on your belly during playwriting or freetime.
🎭 if rehearsals aren't going well, she holds your paw upto her face to keep herself steady. At times her grip hurts.
🎭 hugs from her are a lot more frequent.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
✉️ Eddie
Scent: Jasmine
💌 He caught a faint scent of it when delivering your mail, and when walking by you, but thought it was just him.
💌 it finally clicked that it was you when you were making arts and crafts with him.
💌 During stressful times, you'd walk beside him or sit with him, hoping your scent would ease his nerves. [And it did]
💌 He and Frank found out they liked the same scent, which somewhat brought them closer.
💌 you were often a guest to any meet-ups he and Frank may have.
From my Wattpad book.
Open to anymore ideas~
A Year in (Book) Review: My 2024 Reading Journey 📚
#44 - Daughter of the Deep by Rick Riordan
Science Fiction / 364 pages / published in 2021 / Finished May 16
One Sentence Review: Having never read 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, I had no idea what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised - it was action-packed, had a giant ticklish octopus and an orangutan who loves Mary Berry (excellent taste), and the twists and turns both shocked and hurt me in equal measure - plus. the diversity in this book is astounding!
Favorite Quotes
"I've heard 'experts' say that autistic people have trouble with empathy, but sometimes I wonder if these experts have ever actually sat down and talked to autistic people."
*
"I've learned that the world doesn't care what is right for me. I have to make it care."
*
"Given the choice between destruction and lasagna, I will choose lasagna every time."
*
"I study the book's illustration. It's hard to reconcile the idea of Nemo the terrorist with Nemo the brilliant inventor. Then again, our labels always depend on who's doing the labeling. Patriot, freedom fighter, terrorist, thug. Prince Dakkar was a brown man fighting the colonizers. I'm pretty sure that wouldn't have helped his reputation in Europe."
*
"I believe that communication can solve any problem if the parties have the will and the intelligence to learn to understand one another."
My rating: 5/5
A Few More Thoughts (Spoilers):
This book was a blast! When I first tried to read it a few years ago, I DNF. But I blazed through it this time and enjoyed it far more than anticipated. It has Riordan's signature humor and heart. It's also a postcolonial sequel that encourages readers to think critically about a classic work of fiction.
I was completely shocked by the twist that not only was her brother actually alive, but that he was also the enemy.
Still can't get over how the author encourages readers to reconsider the original story in the context of colonialism - who was the true villain?
Again, the representation was off the charts!
He shows through Captain Nemo's story that hurting and desperate people do hurting and desperate things.
Also, I love his note at the beginning and the theme throughout that science fiction as a genre isn't just for entertainment - it is a reflection of our own present and "the best ... can shape how humans see their own future."
top 9 books 📚
tagged by @eddiebabygirldiaz (who I constantly pest to write a book and will add to this list if they ever do 😘) @thewolvesof1998 @cowboy-buddie @your-catfish-friend @spotsandsocks Thank you loves 💖
I can say right now that these are in the moment picks. Books are far too special to narrow down to just 9.
Anthem by Ayn Rand
A short read about a society where people have careers and partners chosen for them. Everyone is addressed in collective terms and the word I is never used. It's been a long ass time, but I legit cried the first time I read it.
1984 by George Orwell
Another one that has fascinated me since the first time I read it, way back in the dark ages of high school. Dystopian society where Big Brother is always watching. The main character is lured into going against the grain only to ultimately be punished. That's a terrible excuse for a summary but here we are.
The Santaland Diaries by David Sedaris
Some satire and humor as the author details his time working as an elf during the Christmas season. If you don't wheeze and piss yourself laughing I really don't know what to tell you.
Psycho by Onley James
Book 2 of a MM series about 7 psychopath brothers. I love the series but August is my favorite.
Moth by Lily Mayne
Book 5 of a human/monster romance series. Moth is my very special baby. Look at him wrong and I'll maim you.
The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller
jfc how do I even summarize this? IDEK... battles, romance, platonic love, soulmates. Just go read it and have yourself a good cry.
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
Dear gods what a fucking fabulous book. Chronicles the life of the (fictional) mysterious hollywood actress, Evelyn Hugo, with an absolutely insane twist at the end.
The Christmas Box Collection by Richard Paul Evans
Technically a trilogy but I can't separate them. This begins by telling the story of a young family who move in with an elderly widow. It then moves on to the details of who the widow was before, starting at the very beginning with how she met her husband, and the reason for the large marble angel statue on the property.
Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson
One of my favorites from my youth. All about friendship and imagination and what happens when that gets ripped away. Again, a shit summary, but it's a fantastic read. I have absolutely considered an au about this one.
Bonus: When the Summer's Over by Anna Pollock
A m/f romance that's cute AF, written by one of my besties @walnuts-and-berries, with cover art by my beloved wife @lizzie-bennetdarcy. Minnesota farm gal meets city boy and is instantly disgusted. gasp can they overcome their differences and make it work?
no pressure tagging @stereopticons @blackandwhiteandrose @buddierights @apothecarose @spotsandsocks @shortsighted-owl @mysteriouslyyounggalaxy @jesuisici33 @lizzie-bennetdarcy and anyone else I normally tag (or don't) who wants to play 🥰
📚💫 Staying Sane During Finals: A Studyblr Guide 💫📚
Hi there lovelies! As we dive headfirst into the whirlwind that is finals season, remember, you are more than just a student, and taking care of your sanity should be a top priority. So, here are some tips to help you stay grounded, focused, and most importantly, sane during this challenging time:
Plan Your Battle: Start by creating a realistic study schedule that allocates time for breaks, meals, and restorative activities. Breaking down your tasks into manageable chunks will not only boost your productivity but also alleviate feelings of overwhelm.
Mindfulness Moments: Incorporate mindfulness into your daily routine. Take a few minutes each day to practice deep breathing exercises, meditation, or even just observing your surroundings. These little pauses will help you center yourself, reduce stress, and enhance your focus.
Fuel Your Brain: Nourish your body with nutritious foods that support cognitive function. Brain-boosting snacks like nuts, berries, and dark chocolate can provide you with the energy you need while keeping your mind sharp. Remember to stay hydrated and avoid excessive caffeine, which can lead to jitters and anxiety.
Sweat it Out: Make time for physical exercise during finals. Engaging in regular workouts or even short breaks for stretching can relieve tension and boost your mood. Whether it's a quick jog, a yoga session, or a dance break, find what gets your body moving and your endorphins flowing!
Breaks are Sacred: Remember, breaks are not a luxury but a necessity. Stepping away from your study materials periodically can actually improve your productivity and prevent burnout. Engage in activities you enjoy, such as reading for pleasure, doodling, or chatting with friends. You deserve it!
Sleep Well, Achieve Well: Aim for quality sleep to maximize your cognitive abilities. Stick to a consistent sleep schedule, create a calming bedtime routine, and ensure your study space is separate from your sleeping area. A well-rested mind is more alert, focused, and ready to conquer those finals!
Ask for Support: Don't be afraid to lean on your support system. Reach out to friends, family, or fellow studyblrs who understand the struggles you're going through. Share your concerns, vent your frustrations, and celebrate your victories together. Remember, you are never alone in this journey!
Celebrate Your Progress: Take time to acknowledge and celebrate your achievements, no matter how small they may seem. Reward yourself with mini-treats, a relaxing bath, or a favorite TV show episode. Recognizing your efforts will boost your motivation and remind you of your incredible resilience.
Remember, your mental well-being matters just as much as your grades. By incorporating self-care practices, maintaining a balanced routine, and seeking support, you'll be better equipped to tackle your finals with confidence and maintain your sanity along the way. You've got this! Good luck, stay strong, and keep shining bright! 💪✨
My media this week (25 Feb - 2 Mar 2024)
nancy is the superstar of this show. she's in it for 5 seconds, drops the best line, steals the scene
📚 STUFF I READ 📚
🥰 What I Used To Be (thepinupchemist) - 117K, stucky, omegaverse trauma recovery fic - a relatively light tone, mostly escapist fic focusing on the recovery, not dwelling overly much on trauma details, kidfic but I really dug it
😍 The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi (Amina al-Sirafi #1) (Shannon Chakraborty, author; Lameece Issaq & Amin El Gamal, narrator) - just gonna KJ Charle's review bc she's better with words than I'll ever be: "Good god, this was incredible fun. Absolutely cracking. A sort of take on Sinbad but with more historical accuracy (apart from the demons, marids, etc), with a middle-aged retired lady pirate getting the crew back together to take on a Frankish coloniser/sorceror/baddie. It's just fabulous exuberant fun." I cannot wait for more!
😊 The Werewolf Companion (MargaretKire) - traumatized derek hale, intriguing larger worldbuilding, hot, wet, messy sex that really leaned into the 'definitely not human' aspect of werewolf fucking without going full xeno. super enjoyable
🥰 My Man Jeeves (Jeeves #1) (PG Wodehouse) - our intro to Bertie & Jeeves 💖 [via Serial Reader app]
💖💖 +50K of shorter fic so shout out to these I really loved 💖💖
A Fine Cure from Fennel Seed (Lucius Parhelion (Parhelion)) - original work, 10K - absolutely delightful amuse-bouche of an original fic; short, hot, slapsticky hilarious, set in the '30s
🏳️🌈 sexuality 🍉 favorite fruit 📚 favorite book
For the ask game!
(It isn't signed. There's just an image of a rough sketch of a Rabsca posed like the Mona Lisa where a signature should go.)
Huh, wonder who…oh! Hi Clover! Thanks for the Mona Rabsca!
As I mentioned before, I’m very much attracted to men. My favorite fruit…hear me out. Razz Berries taste delicious. Yes I know they’re for Pokémon. Don’t judge me.
As for my favorite book, Scarlet Book is weirdly starting to fit that category? Reading the various entries by the Zero Expedition Team is SUPER enjoyable. Great bed time stories!
🍉🥦🎲😇📚
Hi!!! Thanks!! Here come some probably-not-very-coherent but very rambling answers that I hope can satisfy, feel free to ask follow up questions if you want~
🍉 Fruit:
Strawberries!!!!!! The ultimate fruit and the ultimate flavor!!
I fuckin love berries!! Blueberries, raspberries~ Most berries are great. Except blackberries. (Gooseberries!!! More people need to realize the goodness of gooseberries). Peaches, Granny Smith apples, the occasional clementine…
🥦 Veggie:
Tomatoes!!!! I know they’re technically a fruit but I’ve got autism food pickiness and people put them in salad so they count. And I fucking love tomatoes I’ll eat a fucker like an apple give it to me
🎲 Game:
Videogame: Pokémon Emerald
Boardgame: Mancala, Backgammon
😇 Blorbo:
I have too many and it’s not like I rank them I don’t play favorites with my children. You can just go back in this blog and you’ll figure it out p easy if you’ve got time, patience, and enough curiosity.
Like you’ll find a good chunk of like 2019-2023 of p consistent Witcher Jaskier content that I’m not currently in bc I’ve been overcome with a new hyperfixation.
If you want the ones I’ve had the longest….
The ones I still post about/interact with/have strong feelings for now that I loved before high school (context- my last year of middle school/first year of high school was 2010) are…
- Shawn Spencer, Psych
- Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock Homes stories- Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (Specifically the Books/Short Stories)
And the main ones from high school/college (2011-2016?) are…
- The Doctor, Doctor Who (the whole character every incarnation that’s my baby right there)
- Roronoa Zoro, One Piece (the original boi, I made this tumblr to find and collect fanart of him in like 2014 or something so all the OGs that still follow me on here from my One Piece days are real ones)
I got into anime as a whole around then, so there are too many anime blorbos; I’m not listing them all, but most are voiced by Kazuya Nakai or Daisuke Ono, or is a girl from Love Live.
Currently I’m fucking obsessed with Hazbin Hotel/Helluva Boss so it’s hard to think of other things and I know like it’s one of the most annoying fandoms someone could suddenly attack your dash with but I can’t help it I’m compelled by these fuckin guys
📚 Book(s):
The Princess Bride: S. Morganstern’s Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure- William Goldman
The Complete Sherlock Holmes- Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Amelia Peabody mysteries- Elizabeth Peters
Mary Russell mysteries (specifically the first two: The Beekeepers Apprentice: or, On the Segregation of the Queen; and A Monstrous Regiment of Women)- Laurie R. King
Harry Dresden series- Jim Butcher
Nancy Drew mysteries- Carolyn Keene
Phryne Fisher mysteries- Kerry Greenwood
Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch- Terry Pratchet & Neil Gaiman
Mrs. Murphy mysteries- Rita Mae Brown & Sneaky Pie Brown
I have too many I’m sorry I’ll stop here; I could read before kindergarten, going to the library was my main weekend fun activity to do with mom as a child, my high school senior superlative was “Biggest Reader,” I was reading while walking between classes and everyone apparently noticed even when they didn’t talk to me. I like mysteries~
#caff answers#hope u liked my book list thats more of a series list lol#feel free to ask more about any of this#if you want
