I am sure Rio does not like Ghost Agatha.

In the main drama, Rio never said he disliked Agatha. Rio did not hide her true identity. She was very sincere, and that was impressive. I would love to see more of Ghost Agatha, Teen, and Rio's journey. (I bet those girls don't get along)

ゴーストアガサのことはきっとリオは嫌いだろう。ドラマ本編の中でリオはアガサのことを嫌いとは言わなかったし、リオは自分の正体を隠してはい��かった。彼女はとても誠実で、そのことが印象的だった。ゴーストアガサとティーンとリオの旅��もっと見たいよ。(たぶんすごく仲が悪い)

アガサオールアロングめちゃくちゃ面白かった。8話で話終わるじゃん！？ってなってからの種明かしがすごかった。なるほどね！エンディングも含めて伏線だったんだ。母と子の歌が罠の歌へと変わり、また母と娘の歌となるの本当に良かった。ティーンは魔女の道を作ったことで負い目を感じていたけど、でもリリアは自分の能力と人生を肯定できて、大切な魔女団(covenに対する日本語が無さすぎてそれでいいのか？みたいな言葉になってるけどcovenに対応する日本語がないからな…)を守れたという面やアリスやジェンも力を取り戻せたという面もあるし、全部が嘘で作り物で、でもその中で本物もあるんだよな。リリアの話はあまりに完璧すぎて、アガサがどう終わろうとこの話があればどう考えても素晴らしい話になってしまうのやばいよね。リリアは変わり者ではぐれものでいいって言ってたけど本当に必要なのは時系列が直線じゃない彼女を信じて記憶してくれる誰かだったのもうｴｰﾝ。あとリリアとジェンが棚を見つけた時のシーンめちゃくちゃインターステラーじゃなかった？インターステラーも愛の力学の話だから最高だね。

8話見るまではアガサとリオがキスしてハッピーエンドで終わるんだ絶対そうって言ってたけどそうだけどそうじゃないけどもうそれでも良いよ！！！！でもいまのアガサならリオの愛を受け止められるんじゃない？周りが死ぬからダメかな。難しいね。アガサがメンターなティーンの行く末が心配になるけどトミーが見つかるといいね。

Melusine – mythical humanoid serpent transformed into a dragon

Melusine is a water spirit from French folklore and an example of human–animal marriage as well as princess Toyotama (See) in the East. She is a humanoid hybrid whose upper body is that of a beautiful woman in medieval costume, but whose lower body is that of a snake, and is also said to be a dragon nymph, as she has dragon wings on her back. She is also sometimes thought to be associated with mermaid lore. The Starbucks logo is also inspired by her.

Mélusine was the daughter of Pressine, the Fountain Fay, and Elinas, King of Albany, Scotland. Her mother placed a curse on Mélusine and her sisters that for one day a week they would assume the form of a snake from the waist down. Furthermore, if anyone saw them in their true form, they would be permanently remain forever the lower body of a snake and with wings.

Raymondin, Count of Poitou, who had left his family after accidentally killing his uncle, while hunting in the forest, met Melusine one day, fell in love and married her after making a covenant that he would never look at her on Saturdays. She brought her husband wealth and they had ten children. 

However, when her husband heard a malicious rumour, he broke his promise and saw Melusine's true identity while she was bathing. Locked alone in her room, her upper body was human, but her lower body was that of a giant snake (or fish). She then assumes the form of a dragon, provides him with two magic rings, and flies off, never to be seen again. She returns only at night to nurse her two youngest children, who are still infants. Although many of Melusine's children had the nature of monsters, it is said that the future French monarch stood from the lineage of two children born normal.

メリュジーヌ 〜竜に変身した神話上の人型蛇の妖精

メリュジーヌは、フランスの民間伝承に登場する水の精霊で、東洋の豊玉姫（参照）と同様に異類婚姻の一例である。上半身は中世の衣装をまとった美しい女性の姿だが、下半身は蛇の姿をしており、背中に竜の翼が生えていることから竜の妖精とも言われている、人型のハイブリッド。また、人魚の伝承と結びつけて考えられることもある。スターバックスのロゴにもなっている。 

メリュジーヌは、泉の妖精プレッシナとスコットランドのオルバニー王エリナスの娘である。母親はメリュジーヌと妹達に、週に1日だけ腰から下が蛇の姿となるという呪いをかけた。さらに、もし変身した姿を誰かに見られた場合には、永久に下半身が蛇で翼を持った姿のままとなってしまう。 

ポワトゥー伯爵のレイモンダンは、誤って叔父を殺してしまったために家を出ていたが、ある日メルジーヌに出会って恋に落ち、メルジーヌは「土曜日には絶対に自分を見ない」という誓約を交わして彼と結婚した。メリュジーヌは夫に富をもたらし、10人の子供をもうけた。 

しかし、悪意のある噂を聞いた夫は誓いを破り、入浴中のメリュジーヌの正体を目撃してしまう。部屋にひとり閉じこめられた彼女の上半身は人間だったが、下半身は巨大な蛇（または魚）のものだった。 そして彼女は竜の姿になり、夫に2つの魔法の指輪を与えると飛び去り、二度と姿を現すことはなかった。彼女は、まだ幼い二人の末っ子に授乳するために夜だけ戻ってくる。メリュジーヌの子供達の多くは化け物の性質を持っていたものの、問題なく生まれた2人の子供の血統からは、後のフランス君主が立ったという。

Memo for Season 2 Ep.1 (Ep.25), The Apothecary Diaries

Here I’ll write about things I noticed, questions, and thoughts about each episode. I’m not sure if I can write about every episode, but I’d like to write as long as I have time. Most of what I write here is my personal opinion, so please forgive me if there are any misunderstandings. Questions about English are highlighted in green, so I would be happy if anyone of a native English speaker could tell me. I would also be happy if you would feel free to reply with your own thoughts and opinions.

猫猫「何をと言われましても。香油を作っております。医局を掃除していて、蒸留装置を見つけたので。先日、青薔薇(そうび)を作る際に用意した薔薇の余りです」

Maomao “Nani’o-to iware-mashitemo, koyu’o tsukutte-orimasu. Ikyoku’o soji-shite-ite, joryu-sochi’o mitsuketa-node. Senjitsu, ao-sobi’o tsukuru-saini yoi-shita sobino amari desu.”

Maomao “Why do you ask like that? I’m making scented oils. While cleaning up the clinic, I found a still. I’m using some of the blooms left over from the blue roses we grew the other day.”

何をと言われましても(なにをといわれましても/Nani’o-to iware-mashitemo);

This is a phrase Maomao sometimes uses, which literally means “Even if you ask me that…,” followed by words such as “it’s hard to explain,” “I’m in trouble,” or “you should know without asking,” and only the first half is said because she is hesitant to say the whole sentence.  If you say it when asked something, it sounds sarcastic because it contains the nuance that you don’t want to answer soon. In Maomao’s case, she seems to say it when she is wondering “Why do you ask me that?” or “It’s troublesome to answer,” or when she is trying to buy time while wondering what to say when asked something inconvenient.

実家（じっか/Jikka）: Parents’ house

There is no such word in English, but in Japanese we use it all the time. For example, 「今週末は実家に帰る予定だ（こんしゅうまつは、じっかにかえるよていだ/Kon-shumatsuwa jikkani kaeru yoteida）」:“I’m planning on going back to my parents’ house this weekend,” and we say 「帰る（かえる/Kaeru）」: “going back” instead of 「行く（いく/Iku）」: “going to.”

Maomao “The problem with the rear palace is that the women are expected to be excessively innocent in matters of sex. Most of the ladies-in-waiting gathered here are virgins. What if the emperor finds a girl to his liking, only to have her fail to perform due to her ignorance? That’s why I thought they need to be educated beforehand.”

生娘（きむすめ/Kimusume）: virgin

This is an old word, so young Japanese such as teenagers probably don’t know. We usually use 「処女(しょじょ/Shojo)」 for “virgin,” although we don’t say such a word loudly, of course…

Maomao (That’s what he noticed? I thought maybe he was a closet pervert.)

The word 「むっつり(Muttsuri)」 means to be silent without any words, but here it’s used as an abbreviation of the slang 「むっつりスケベ(Muttsuri-sukebe)」. I found it interesting to know that there is such a word in English. 「スケベ」 is a slang word for “someone who likes to think about sex all the time.” 「エッチ(Ecchi)」 is almost the same. Recently the word 「変態(へんたい/Hentai)」 has become known overseas, but there are big difference between “sukebe/ecchi” and “hentai.” “Sukebe/ecchi” are simply someone with a strong sexual interest, but “hentai” is someone who has a unique taste that is different from the normal, for example, exhibitionism… When I look at English subtitles for anime, most of the time it is translated as “pervert,” so there may not be a difference in English, but in Japanese, being called “hentai” is much more insulting than being called “sukebe/ecchi.”

Xiaolan “Oh, what is it that I seek, beneath those beautiful flowers? Hey, what do you think is buried there?”

→In the original light novel, Xiaolan eats “baked goods,” and I imagined cookies or rice crackers, but in the anime, it’s replaced with a steamed meat bun, making her look more comical. Xiaolan is so cute!

I thought, if I wrote “he’ll” on an English test at school, my teacher would definitely say that the future tense was wrong and the correct answer was “he would,” and deducted points. I was taught that the tenses must have been always consistent in the same English sentence. Is it okay in real English conversations?

I thought “we’re” should have been “she’s” or “you’re” since Concubine Gyokuyou wouldn’t go with them.

I’m sure many of you feel the same way, but this was the scene I was most looking forward to in this episode. I really liked how Jinshi was portrayed with such expressive faces. In the original light novel, the quack doctor and Gaoshun were so fond of cats that they ended their sentences with “にゃー(Nyaaa)”: meow, and after Jinshi put the kitten on his face Gaoshun said “What were you doing?”, glaring him with a look of envy on his face. I would have liked to see that in the anime as well.

My overall impression after watching the first episode is that all the characters are cute! Especially Xiaolan and Shisui. Also, at the end of the OP video, when wet Maomao and Jinshi turn around, the picture and the colors are very cute. I think it’s a scene that fans who know the original work are looking forward to, and it will be the most exciting part of the first half. I’m really happy that I can watch a new episode every weekend for the next six months.

子供達は日曜日のフライトで帰国

日本時間の今日は土曜日。オヤジは金曜日の夜でリラックス。

子供達は、幕張で行われている東京オートサロンに行っている。物凄い入場者数だ。私も昔行ったことがあったな。今の私は日本で流行中のインフルエンザを心配(苦笑)

先程息子からクルマ系人気YouTuberのNoriyaroのアレクシさんと撮った写真が送られてきた。息子も自分で機械いじりするのが好きなので、アレクシさんと会えて嬉しそうだった。

娘は娘で以前から行ってみたかったイベントだけに、とても喜んでいるようだ。昨日は日本の従姉妹とも会って、そちらもとても楽しかったようだ。

息子は欧州の友達と昨年末のコミケも行ったし、今回のオートサロンも行くし、3週間も日本にいたらそりゃ濃���内容だ。私は彼らのように旅を楽しむ事が上手でなかったから、逆に彼らが楽しく過ごしている事がとても嬉しのだ。まあ人の親ってそんなもんだろうけど・・・

良いお年を

1月、なんだか連れ合い夫婦の親類に疲れてしまった。当たり前って当たり前ができない人にとっては毒なんだよな。

年末（12月30日）から1月2日まで泊まってげんなり。家族間の違いってやっかいだし人生観の違いもやっかいだ。

後半は札幌出張へ。友人の家業のお手伝い。雪がなんだか愛おしく感じた。夜は友人と飲み歩いていたわけだけど、札幌すすきのあたりにいけば誰かに会うというコミュニティのキュッとしたまとまりが新鮮だった。東京には人が集まれるよう��街がたくさんある。選択肢が多いのは良いことだけど寂しい侘しい気持ちにもなる。

2月　東京にも雪が降った。義父がなくなった2年前のことを思い出した。その度に相続で揉めている実子を思い出して腹が立つ。本格的に人に振り回されるようになったのはそのあたりからな気がする。プロジェクトの後輩に飲みにつれてかれて締めに入ったらーめん屋であった女の子としばらく連絡をとっていた気がする。名前ももう忘れた。

新しい生成AIの仕事が入り準備にも忙しかった。「夜明けのすべて」を映画館で見て、人が持つ障害や病について考えさせられた。受け入れて生きていく難しさ。ただ、日常を過ごす難儀さよ。

3月　霊視？ができる人のところにいった。人生の答え合わせのような時間だった。もう日記には書いたので詳しくは書かない。とにかく人と自然を敬って生きていこうと思えた。なかなか人にはできていない気がする。接待で連れてかれた料亭に、金を持った経営者にくっついてくる「女性がいたほうがなんとなく見栄えがよい」みたいな思惑で連れてこられた女の子がいて妙に気に入られた。薬をやってるんだかずっと酔ってるんだか、へらへら笑う子だった。帰りに袖をつかまれたときに合った目が急に正気で「どっかいこ」と言われたのが「逃げよう」という意味に聞こえてしまって急に怖くなった。「こんどね」と言って手を振りほどいてゆっくりと離れた。

末には母がようやく病院に行き、大きな病院での受診を勧められている。

4月　母の余命宣告を4月の1日に医師から受ける。ステージ4の肺がん。残された時間を良いものにと思っていたが、何度も躓いている。きっと自分は良い子供ではない。母が人生で一番大切にしている宗教を大切にできないからだ。脳への転移も中旬には見つかり、治療を選択する。今思えば、母が人間らしく生きることができる分かれ道はここだったのかもしれない。奥さんの友人夫婦と飲みに行った際にパートナーシップについて考えさせられた。どうしたって男女に力の差はあるのだから恫喝や暴力で支配しようとしてはいけない。要求を通そうとしてはいけない。と話しても無駄だった。人への説得や説教は無駄に終わることが多い。人は人生で何度かしか学べない。ちいさこべえ。沖縄出張のついでにひめゆりの塔にもいった。献花した。嘉手納町の光と闇を知る。

5月　母の入院に伴い実家で過ごすことが多くなった。抗がん剤は良く利くものほど副作用が大きい。あっという間に母はボロボロになっていった。もともと食が細く、身体も瘦せていて、体力もない母がさらに骨と皮になっていくのは見てられないものがある。きつかった。5月はTumblr民とひとりあった。人生で一度も交錯することのなかった人の話は面白い。筋が通った人生で羨ましいと少し思った。5月は冨山出張もあった。そして三峰神社にもいった。

家を建てるためのプランニングが本格的になったのもこの頃だ。決められたところに自分のサイズを合わせて住んできた自分には注文住宅という選択は意味がわからなかった。結婚は人の価値観に片足を突っ込みながら生きることだ。

6月　誕生日。東京ドームホテルのブッフェでごはんを食べた。あと下北沢で「辰巳」を観た。今年見たドラマや映画の中で5本の指に入る作品。連れ合いは中旬に韓国旅行へいった。女性は好きですね。韓国。プロジェクトチームの女の子のことを女の娘と書いたことで変な絡まれ方したのもこの頃だ。辞書を引けと言いたい。母と冥土の土産的なプレゼントとして宮古島旅行をプレゼントしいったのも6月か。身体の自由がきかない母はあまり楽しめなかったかもしれない。たまに思い出すことがあれば良いが。母はそういうタイプでもない。

7月　新しい仕事が舞い込んで研修つくりをたくさんした月だった。母の闘病は相変わらず続き。夏の暑さからかあまり記憶がない。

8月　妊活が始まった。これはけっこうつらかった。なんだか閉塞感がとてもある時期だった。予定調和の上を歩いているようで気持ち悪かった。「ラストマイル」を観た。エンタメとして最高。自分のために働くっていつの間にかにできなくなるよね。選んで人のために働くならいいけど、人に搾取され続けるのはしんどい。

9月　相続がようやくまとまりかける。弁護士さんが入ると話が早くて助かる。家の工事も始まった。幸福な家庭の風景が相変わらず自分の中にはなくて、いつかどこかへ行きそうで怖い。それは実の父と同じで嫌だし、あこがれるし。父も金さえあればそんな生き方で良かったのかもしれない。実家の売却も現実味を帯びてきて、家を見ては無駄なものの多さに頭が重くなる日々。結局はしりぬぐいはこちらだから。いつも。もう一人Tumblr民と会った。自由で羨ましいが、その自由さを羨ましがられることがこの人の業だなと思った。人は手に入らないものを欲しがるから。相変わらず母は通院。一度、治療するを選択するとこちらから声をかけるまでストップしないのが病院で。そんなことも知らなかったな。

10月　母の二度目の癌の脳転移が見つかり、喪服を買う。母から急にもう犬の散歩ができないと連絡がきたのも10月。それは良いけど、事前に相談するということができないの���腹立たしさを覚えた。いつもそうで、限界になってからパスされる。久々にバイクを買った。去年買ったお気に入りのコートも今年は着ていない。そういう機会が減った。

11月　福島出張。気晴らしになった。母の治療方法は試してはダメを繰り返してもう残り少ない。分の悪い賭けはやはり奇跡は起こらず終わる。閉塞感は孤独感に変わってきた。孤独なら良い。親しい。

12月　大阪出張。介護系のセミナーの撮影。「認知症と癌が一番幸せな死に方っていうよ」と励まされた。認知症はすべてを忘れていくから。癌は死ぬ時期がわかるからお別れがしやすい。10年会っていなかった兄家族と母を合わせる。意外と何事もなかったかのように話しているそうだ。その場に自分はいたくない。白けてしまう。

人の一生について考える。経験したことが身体や心に沁みついて、時にそれが毒となる。小説家などの自殺者について調べた人が大抵は小さい頃に愛されなかった記憶を抱えていると言っていた。老いるということは、無力だった小さい頃に戻ってしまうという怖さと戦うことになる。人に迷惑をかけて生きるということがどうしても許せなかったのだろう。生きるということは迷惑なことだ。きっと誰もそう。そうなんだけど開き直ったら終わり。

年末年始は犬の世話があるのでひとりで実家にいる。連れ合いの実家にいかなくてよいのはなんとも楽だ。スーパーで少しだけ良いものを買って食べる。そして年越しそばの準備をしている。もうすぐ2025年だ。全部片づけていこう。

なんとか今年中に書き終わった。良いお年を。

2024年も始まった途端に能登半島を襲った大地震。被災されて一か月経った今もなかなか元の暮らしに戻れない方、避難されている方など数多くの方が大変な思いをしていると思います。

今回セレクトした写真のKeiji Sugiharaさんも能登半島地震で被災し、不便な生活を余儀なくしています。いつも七尾湾を中心に素敵な写真を届けていただいています。Keiji Sugiharaさんにとってはこの大変な状況の中で対応していただき、お手間をかけさせてしまったのかなと反省しています。

Keiji Sugiharaさんからコメントをいただきました。「地震直後から同じ市内の娘の家にお世話になっています。日中は、震災の後始末に追われている毎日です。上下水道が不通のままで不自由な生活の中で、30km離れた公共浴場からの帰り道で撮影した日本海のユウゾラでした。」とのこと。 Keiji Sugiharaさん、素敵な写真をありがとうございます。
