any day off from work was a blessing for kj, especially considering how busy she could be even on her off days. she still had quite a few errands to run but she figured that she'd definitely earned a stop at the daily grind for an iced coffee — even just the thought of it was making her mouth water.
she's brought out of her thoughts when out of the corner of her eye she notices someone drop something on the ground, specifically someone that she didn't recognize (and definitely didn't look like they belonged in a place like this). without really thinking, she bends over to grab the folder. "shit, sorry," she apologizes when she notices that he's bent over to grab it, too, and returns to her full height to hold it out in offering to him.
Location: Outside the Daily Grind Open to all!
Laurent had never been so broke. Not since he was a kid.
He thought of his Greco-roman style Villa, the one he had left behind in Monaco and almost just started weeping. He thought of the pool and the courtyard, and the fact that he had staff. God he missed having people to do things for him. How he fucking missed having a maid. There was no way he was able to afford one now and who knew using a vacuum could be so frustrating.
With a slim folder full of sheet music tucked under his arm, Laurent was scowling like a leopard with a headache when she reached into his coat pocket for a cigarette. He was just bougie enough to have his own little slim metal case, the kind that even had a space for your zippo if you were so inclined. Laurent was a matches kind of guy though.
Laurent had the cigarette between his teeth, hands cupped around the end to spare himself a non-light situation and was half contemplating a latte when he dropped his folder. The thing was zipped tight, thank god, so nothing went scattering but still. Laurent dropped his head back and had a vicious and violent thought that did little to calm the tension curling like vines around his bones. He wanted to start screaming.
He sucked hard on the cigarette and with his pride long abandoned, bent down to pick up his belongings.

August felt soo long. At first, it was great with my vacation and a successful convention and great books and then reality came crashing back in with developments at work that left me reeling for a bit. I'm bad with change. /D Anyway, on to the books! I had a lot of train time this month, so there's quite a few.
Slippery Creatures, Subtle Blood, The Sugared Game (The Will Darling Adventures 1-3) (KJ Charles): Ooh, these took me by surprise! I read two of the author's other books last month and needed something light and easy for my train trips. These were so much more delightful than I expected. I read all 3 of them within five days. Fun! Adventure! Intrigue! Characters I actually like! No really, I loved Will and his attitude. Sure, he has kind of a short temper and resorts to violence quickly, but … everyone deserved it! (And it's just a book.) This is my fantasy, you know. Actually spitting people in their face when they annoy me. Actually telling them off no matter the consequences. Hah. I guess, this is why I like this sort of character. (The Tarot Sequence's Brand and All for the Game's Andrew come to mind … Interestingly, just like Kim in here their partners are lying little shit's as well. And seen from that angle, Laurent and Damen of Captive Prince fit that category as well. I'm starting to see patterns in what I like to read. :'D) So anyway, I had a lot of fun reading this series! <3
Lose you to find me (Erik J. Brown): I have things to say. 8D First of all, yes, it's cute. It made me smile when my day was shit and while the characters had their annoying phases I'm glad it turned out how it did in the end. Before reading, though, I was so disappointed it was just a contempory romance. After All that's left in the world with it's postapocalyptic but not too outlandish setting I was hoping I'd get more of that "a little different". Yeah, didn't work out, but the pain eased a little because the book was nice actually and we reconciled for real with author's afterword. And to be fair, usually, I'm all in when authors do different things with each book instead of writing the same all over again, so I have to give him credit for this. But there's still one more thing I have to mention. Why is there no content warning for SEVERED BODY PARTS?! Like what the hell seriously. I'm not squeamish usually but one of my coworkers cut off a part of his finger permanently at the beginning of the year, so this was waaay too real to me. A warning would have been appreciated. /D
Prince in Disguise (Perilous Courts 2) (Tavia Lark): More stuff that's easy to read. I liked the first volume better because the stakes were higher but it was still pretty okay. I definitely like how close these volumes are in timeline and story while still being separate adventures. I wish Whisper's mission in this would have had a little more impact but well, it is what it is. (I think I just like Whisper more than Bell or Rakos 8D). Also new mascot animal. Cute! I wonder if there'll be one in volume 3 as well … 8D
Afterglow (Golden Boys 2) (Phil Stamper): After Lose you to find me I was in the mood for more contemporary YA and as it turns out the themes in this one are similar. High school graduation, college applications, self-discovery. It also felt very American to me. As a European reading books like this is always like a cultural study. :'D I think, what I liked most about Golden Boys was its quiet tone. It had its dramatic moments but, at least in my memory overall, it was more calm and understated and while I love my adventure stories reading something nice and calm was a good change of pace. And the sequel takes it even one step further. While there's anxiety towards the future it's never the kind of overwhelming where I have to squeeze my eyes shut and take a moment to calm my nerves before I can continue reading. 8D In terms of content this works because it's a sequel and we already know everyone and their previous struggles. I have a lot of respect for the writing process. Juggling four boys and the timeline? Ugh. And yeah, I liked the book and the paths the boys take. All these different perspectives on life. It's not just another "where's the next party" and "oh he doesn't like me what should i do" but focusses on the characters and their indivual worries and their friendship. It's nice and it's warm. :)
Sir Callie and the Champions of Helston (Esme Symes-Smith): Well … I wish I liked this better than I did. The story is fine, the characters are fine (in comparison to the next book below they a stellar), the themes are important and I can see what it wants to do and most of it it does pretty well, but … Yes, in order to overthrow a system you first need to establish it. But the first third of the book was hard to get through as the world Callie steps into is very rigid in its rules surrounding gender and stuff and it's making Callie hurt, angry and defensive and even though I knew it would eventually lead to a better place, it was making me angry as well and I get angry easily everytime I step outside, I don't really need that in my books. It gets better once the kids actually meet for real and spend more time with each other. But there's the other part that I didn't like: There's something jarring about the writing style. Like bumps on a smooth road - the more bumps we ride over the more annoying they get. It happened most noticably with distances and the passage of time. The hole that Callie's mother left in her heart took years to grow over, but never fully healed. But they've only been away from said mother for two years. When Callie confronts Peran, Papa draws them backwards, Neal steps between them, yet Peran's face is so close, they can see coloured specks in his irises. He's also way taller than them, so how does that work? At one point I wondered if the author might have less visual imagination power than I do because all the descriptions of distances around the castle, the town, the bridge and the forest just felt jumbled to me. (Or maybe I was just not reading well.) Last example: Callie and Edwyn circle around the dragon and attack their back with swords and it's said in a single simple sentence like it's nothing. But that dragon must be huge, because their face is as large as a human, and also it was flying a few minutes earlier and directly afterwards it's said how there's fire all around them. But yeah, apparently that swing was super easy to do, so one sentence is enough to say it happened. It just felt weird and it happened so often. And I feel bad for picking at a book for kids with a good cause but damn. All these things are so easy to make better and more coherent. :I
The Last Fallen Moon (Gifted Clans 2) (Graci Kim): Ugh, I don't know, this might be the first middle grade book I read where I'd say "I'm too old for this." Not really a fan of the humor and the attempted quirkiness, the pop culture references (and how it basically says that all (Korean?) celebrities are witches which I find actually offensive. Pretty sure none of the kids reading these books will have any magical abilities, so they won't ever make it to stardom or what no matter how hard they try? Hmm.) It was also hard to be patient when things are so obvious and still get treated like a big revelation pages after (The Stairbucks toilets?!) And the characters felt so bland to me. I couldn't tell you a single interesting thing about any of them. Things got better towards the end, when everything starts to fall into place instead of being a string of small tasks that can never be completed because there's suddenly some new issue. The two things I liked are that Riley gains a brother rather than a love interest (or a brother who is a love interest … 8D) and that her sister has an active part this time. Will I read the next installment? …. Probably not?
Waiting for Godot (Samuel Beckett): Oops, something totally different in here for once. I like theatre, but liking in this case means, that I know all plays by Eugene Ionesco and Oscar Wilde, topped with a singular Wedekind and this one. :'D I'm terribly picky and not actively seeking out new stuff. But the Theatre of the Absurd especially has a way with words and weird situations that I always found fascinating. I read Godot a long time ago and went to see it on stage a couple of years ago but when I thought of it recently I realised I didn't remember anything so I reread it and well … I understood why my memory failed. I don't know if I'd actually call the piece good. It's weird, it's weirdly sad and therefore it's weirdly endearing. But most of all it's a giant "what the fuck is going on". It made me think of all that "Is our life a simulation"-crap since Estragon seems to be the only one capable of remembering previous events. But I'm not going to try to think about what it all could mean as it will lead nowhere anyway. :'D
Dark Rise (C.S. Pacat): The sequel is coming in November so I thought it time to refresh my memory! I own the English edition but went and borrowed the German edition from the library for all the things I might have missed and because it's interesting to read the translation vs. the original. I remember having a blast reading this for the first time (I think this was the first time for me writing something book-related on my blog because it was just too wild to contain 8D). And now, knowing the twists and turns it was delicious to look for the foreshadowing (and the twists and turns were delicious as well like hnng!!). And now waiting for the next volume is even harder. Damn!
For September I have planned something nice! Please look forward to it!

oh that's definitely where i'm at. if it's not queer, i don't care.
HAVE SOME QUEER RECS in no particular order:
a charm of magpies by kj charles. one of my favorite series alongside capri. book 1 is dark magic and sexual tension, book 2 is dark magic and emotional tension, book 3 is dark magic and established relationship deliciousness. the books are equal parts humor and horror: you're gonna get creeped out but be absolutely charmed.
the queer principles of kit webb by cat sebastian. percy gives laurent vibes, but like, if laurent was in a romcom. overall a super fun and funny read.
aisling by carole cummings. okay it's been a very long time since i read this one but i remember it being gorgeously written and very trippy and very gay.
NOTE: kj charles, cat sebastian, and carole cummings all have big libraries of queer books, so definitely check out their other works!! i'm very slow and bad about reading these days so i don't really have specific other recs for them, but so much of their works make up my TBR and they are highly recced all across queer book spaces.
the queen's librarian by carole cummings. okay one more rec from her bc i love this book. the main mlm pairing is already established relationship from the beginning and they are adorable and wonderful and somehow simultaneously very smart and very stupid. makes for a very delightful read.
lord of the white hell by ginn hale. i've only read the first 2 books in the series (tbh the other protagonists don't interest me) but they've got a sweet and angsty pairing and some fantastic and horrifying world building.
who'd have thought by g benson. this is such a fun cozy comfort read that i keep going back to. in the best kind of way, it reads like fluffy fanfic (and has the god-tier tropes of FAKE MARRIAGE and ENEMIES TO LOVERS!! okay not quite enemies, they work in the same hospital and just don't like each other at first).
maledicte by lane robins. an all-time favorite of mine and it kills me that it's so underrated and unknown. genderfluid MC who turns into an absolute murder gremlin when her boyfriend gets kidnapped in front of her eyes. miranda dons the new identity of maledicte to infiltrate higher society to get back to his lover and murder everyone who stands in his way. GOOD SHIT.
thorn by anna burke. SAPPHIC BEAUTY AND THE BEAST RETELLING. the huntress (beast) rides a bear. nothing else needs to be said right.
the simon snow series by rainbow rowell. one of very few series that rightfully earns the "enemies to lovers" tag alongside capri; not as gut-wrenchingly well-done as capri, but still excellent. and i just love that 2 out of 3 books are established relationship, i feel like we so rarely get the after-the-sexual/romantic-tension-is-gone moments and stories, or get to see how that tension can and frequently does continue even into and through the relationship. idk i love established relationship content so book 3 of this series just Gets Me.
I’ve reached the point in my queer journey where I don’t want gay subtext anymore. I don’t want up-to-interpretation maybe-they-are gay content.
I want explicitly queer joy and love and passion. I only want overtly gay content in my life now.
So, send your girl some book recs, ok?

Prompts Please!
So I know it’s been ages since I’ve been here properly but I’d like to dip my toes into writing again.
That said, send in your prompts! These are the fandoms I’m better versed in:
Venom: Eddie/Venom
Inception: Arthur/Eames
Star Wars: Kylo Ren/Hux, Poe/Hux
Captive Prince: Laurent/Damen
Thor: Thor/Loki
Any m/m pairing from any KJ Charles work.
Those are the pairings I tend to ship/write but I’m open to different m/m pairings if inspired. Mostly will be doing small ficlets and drabbles.
You can reply to this post or send a prompt in through my inbox. I’ll be writing the next couple of days and hoping to post everything on Thursday.

1, 12 about the Alan & Cassandra branch of the Collins family tree, 17 about Adalynn, 27, and 29
As usual, it gets longer than i anticipated, so more after the cut!
[1] Favourite Character?
If I had to pick a fundie character, I'd probably pick Adalynn. I'm definitely more attached to gen 3 than to gen 2 right now, and she's one of the characters whose lives I've truly fleshed out and who I almost think of as a real person.
[12] How judgy is Allan & Casandra & their family? Will they outright criticize and get mad at less fundie family members, or do they leave them be?
Oo these 2 are in my mind a mix of both JB&M and G&KJ, but more like the Bates parents - they love all their children, but the children who are still fundie as hell will have an easier time than those who have deviated in obvious ways. For example, they're probably closest to Adalynn and Barrett's families as they're the ones who have had the most children. In comparison to their relationships with Maggie, they love each other, but they definitely have to lean into their beliefs that the husband chooses how the family is run and therefore can't outright criticise Maggie for how she lives her life - they're just happy that they're still conservative christians and not heathen liberals 😂 The pants wearing and number of children is definitely a point that they've realised that is something that depends on the couples, so they're simply happy that their kids.
The children's relationships depend on the relationships they have with each other, Adalynn and Macie are like mothers to their siblings and just want happiness for them, but Macie is the more judgemental one out of the two that still drink the kool aid. Barrett is definitely the most fundie out of the boys and will be more critical of people's choices, but good old Kyleigh is there to remind him that thats none of their business as long as they're following God. Zoe also has that motherly bond with her siblings, and since marrying and moving away has been moulding her own beliefs, so she doesn't judge as long as they don't stray too far to the left, so to speak. From Maggie down to Amira (with the exception of beckett the mega fundie) are definitely non judgemental as they're currently labelled as fundie lite or conservative christians. In my head Priscilla is that sibling that is very judgemental because she thinks she's better than everyone else, so she's judged her siblings (especially Maggie) for any slight deviation to what their parents taught. The final 4 aren't married, so they're stuck listening to what their parents say on the matter.
[17] Can you share a surprising/not-fun fact about Adalynn?
One non-fun fact about Adalynn is that she virtually raised the last 3 kids, from the moment they were born until she left the house she was responsible for Charles, Parker, and Ashton. In fact, the baby bassinet stayed in the girls room rather than in Allan and Casandra’s, so that Adalynn could wake up with the baby whenever they needed help.
[27] How many descendants would your gen 1 couple have is this was real life?
So, the maths tells me that after 3 complete generations, with each generation lasting 25 years, with an average of 9 children: Laurent and Zoe would have 819 grandchildren after 75 years, which is a horrifying amount of people.
[29] How do you choose which sims become more fundie and which become less?
I analyse the dynamics that I’ve created for each family, since I know how the personalities of each sim works I can sort of try and gauge how fundie they’d be after they get married and are in control of their own lives. Traits and the interpersonal relationships helped when deciding, for example, Maggie has always been willing to go against the grain. As a toddler and child she was disciplined for her behaviour more often than her siblings were, she’d always get distracted when doing homework and would need to be helped. This helped me decide that she’d be the first one to fully make the switch away from fundamentalism and into regular conservatism. It does help that there’s a quite a spectrum when it comes to being fundie, it helps put the different people at different places on the scale.

Recasting Twilight
Okay everyone, buckle yourselves in. It’s quarantine and I have absolutely nothing better to do, so here we are! I decided to re-read Twilight for the first time in years, and it got me thinking about who could potentially be cast in the various roles if the book were remade as a film/mini-series today! (well, you know, not TODAY today, because corona).
Just a disclaimer- I won’t be casting any of the Forks High Students or the Volturi guard as I believe those should be opportunities for unknown actors. Same goes for Jacob and the Quileutes. Those roles should absolutely go to actors of Native American ancestry.
Please keep in mind that these are just my opinions, I’m in no way trying to infer that the original cast is bad. This is just something that I’ve been toying with in order to keep myself entertained, and for the general amusement of the 3 of you that follow me. I’ll continue on with the other books in separate posts if I feel like I have it in me after finishing this one up. Here we go!
Bella Swan - Anya Taylor-Joy
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’ve been fascinated by her ever since the one-two punch of The Witch and Split. She definitely has the capacity to get across the emotions of the character through facial expressions alone. She also has an understated beauty and charm that just seems very Bella.
Edward Cullen - KJ Apa
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s all about the jawline baby...
Oh, okay, I guess I should actually list a few legitimate reasons.
Edward is described as having bronze colored hair in the book, which KJ definitely pulls off better than any real human should be able to. He’s also got the tense, sometimes overly-serious attitude of Edward down, while still having a killer smile and a great sense of humor.
Alice Cullen - Lana Condor
Tumblr media
I know what you’re thinking, an Asian Alice?
Hear me out: Alice is petite, quirky, and full of energy and fun. Lana Condor fits that description to a T. She’s also dazzling, and would look great with the pixie hairdo. Also, like, all the Cullen kids are adopted, and the entire town of Forks knows they’re adopted, so there’s no need to make them all defacto white just because the parents are. Plus, look at her! She’s so darn cute! But she could also play the scenes where she needs to be scary and intimidating very well.
Rosalie Cullen - Dianna Agron
Tumblr media
I know I’m about to fully out myself as a Glee stan (seasons 1-3 anyway), but Dianna has always been what comes to my mind when I think of breathtaking blondes. Rosalie is described in the books as the most beautiful person Bella has ever seen, almost too perfect. Diana is definitely that. She can play the mean girl, but she can also be snarky and bad-ass. She’s a little older than the rest of the cast playing the teens, but have you seen pics of her lately? The woman never ages. Almost like she’s a real vam... no... it couldn’t be...
Emmett Cullen - Noah Centineo
Tumblr media
So I know Emmett isn’t a HUGE role, and Noah is a pretty big Hollywood heart-throb these days, but maybe he wouldn’t mind having a smaller role in what would definitely be a big-budget film/series. He’s a cutie and handsome as hell, but he’s also playful and tough like Emmett. I’m sure he’d also have a lot of fun in the fight scenes.
Jasper Cullen - Dacre Montgomery
Tumblr media
After Stranger Things, I’m sure we’re all eager to see Dacre take on more high-profile roles. I think he could do a lot with Jasper both in the early films when he’s supposed to be slightly more demure and apart from the others, and then later when his leadership skills are called on. Plus, he and Lana would be adorable!!!
Carlisle Cullen - Matthew Goode
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m taking a slightly different approach from the films with the casting for the parents from the original film, we’re going younger with Carlisle and Esme this time around in order to stay more accurate to the source material. In the books, Carlisle was 23 when you was changed, so if you think about it Matthew Goode is actually pretty old for the part (42). However, he can definitely appear younger than he is, all while giving the feeling that he’s lived hundreds of years. Plus, this is the guy that’s supposedly even more handsome than Edward, and Matthew definitely has the looks and the charm to pull that off.
Esme Cullen - Michelle Cockery
Tumblr media
Esme is described by Bella as having a heart-shaped face with Silent Movie Star looks. Michelle literally looks like she’s stepped off an Old Hollywood set, and she’s so classically beautiful. Also, it would be interesting seeing her play a sweeter, kinder figure than we’re used to seeing on Downton Abbey. She has well-established chemistry with Matthew Goode from working with him on Downton, so they’d be very believable as the Cullens Mom & Dad.
Charlie Swan - Dylan McDermott
Tumblr media
Yes, it’s the “20 Dollars? What do you need 10 Dollars for?” dad from Perks of Being a Wallflower. Dylan has experience playing dads, but he’s also played romantic figures, so you can see what would make 18-year-old Renee leave the big city.
Renee - Melanie Lynskey
Tumblr media
Not only does Melanie really look like Anya, but she also NEVER. AGES. So she definitely can pull off the young-mom look. She’s also got this naive sweetness in all the characters she plays that is perfect for Renee.
James - Jonathan Groff
Tumblr media
Okay, I know what you’re thinking. Not my sweet innocent Groffsauce, not my happy-go-lucky King George/Kristoff/Jesse St. James. Hear me out though- despite the ‘nice’ characters he plays, I feel like there’s a dark side to Jonathan that would be perfect for James. Also, aside from some snarls and dirty looks when the bad guys first meet the Cullens in the baseball field, James isn’t all that outlandishly evil. Bella notes that his voice is fairly ordinary, almost soothing. Jonathan definitely has that, and he’d have a lot of fun with the snarky lines and the ironic nature of the character.
Victoria - Mary Kate Wiles
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mary Kate is more of an Indie Actress, but I think she would bring something really unique to this big-budget-extravaganza. She can play seductive, sassy, and high-energy in the baseball field scene, and then she can transform into the vengeful, focused, crazed-killer in the later portions. Plus, it’s about time MK got some high-profile roles!
Laurent - Louis Garrel
Tumblr media
Just what we need to finish off this first post, a seductive Frenchmen! Louis has the perfect look and a great accent for Laurent, and I think he would be amazing in the scene with Bella in ‘New Moon’. Honestly, after ‘Little Women’, I just need to see more of him in main-stream Hollywood.
That’s all for now! Like I said, we’ll see if I can work up the energy to cast ‘New Moon’, ‘Eclipse’, and ‘Breaking Dawn’! Let me know what you think of my choices. Who’s your dream cast??

Mind sharing some of your favorite m/m romance novels pal?
*CRACKS MY QUEER TRANS KNUCKLES*
ALRIGHT STRAP IN, FOLKS.
My BIG THREE authors where basically everything they write is literal chef kiss are:
1. K.J. Motherfucking Charles
2. Jordan L. Motherfucking Hawk @jordanlhawk
3. Cat Motherfucking Sebastian
The tl;dr: Think of England or Band Sinister (or any of her series it’s all fucking great) by KJ Charles, the Whyborne & Griffin series by Jordan L. Hawk, and the Captive Prince series by C.S. Pacat even though I technically don’t consider that one a true romance, just a series with romance elements. For trans specific, Peter Darling by Austin Chant. The sex isn’t really explicit in that one, so if you, like me, want to see your trans body being loved and appreciated in a sexy sexy way, The Burnt Toast B&B by Heidi Belleau.
There are more than what I’ve listed here, but those authors are my mains. If you want me to go in-depth about any of their books, just lemme know and I’ll be happy to do so.
MORE BENEATH THE CUT!
K.J. specializes in queer historicals, with some of those also being fantasy. With KJ, you will get SMOKING HOT SMUT AND ROMANCE as well as PLOT. She’s also very good at racial diversity and defends to the death people of color in historicals without making it tragic. In fact, I would say that the romance isn’t ever the main plot! It’s more character development. Also most of the time someone dies, but you are guaranteed a Happily Ever After. Most of her stuff is series, but she has some standalones if you wanna dip in your toe.
The standalones of KJ that I would recommend are:
1. Think of England. It’s Edwardian. There’s a disabled character. There’s a Jewish character (I think he’s Portuguese? Maybe Spanish. It’s been a while). There’s some good Voyeurism/”We Know We’re Being Watched” sex. Big Strongk Viking Manly Man who is very soft and sensitive as well.
2. Band Sinister. Regency. VIRGIN CLASSICIST. RAKE. HELLFIRE CLUB. SEDUCTION VIA CATULLUS. NEED I FUCKING SAY MORE. “Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die. Be merry with me?” BOY.
In her fantasy Charm of Magpies series, Jackdaw is my favorite. The main character Jonah even goes by Jay in bed and I’m. Cry. It’s so beautiful it made me believe in love again. If you’re into Holmes/Watson dynamics, Secret Casebook of Simon Feximal is VERY HOT and good and has another book in the same universe where it’s like, Green Man themed.
Her Society of Gentlemen series was the first I read. DANDIES. DANDIES. DANDIES. GOOD GOOD POLITICS. ACTUAL HISTORICAL EVENTS. WILLIAM BLAKE AS PILLOWTALK. BOY.
Sins of the Cities is Victorian Sensationalist Homage! There’s a nonbinary character!
You can’t go wrong with KJ. Sometimes her shorter stories feel rushed, but they still are In Love Every Time. Seriously. Even if you like rougher stuff, even BDSM, they are STILL IN LOVE WHILE IT’S HAPPENING. SO ROMANCE. SO GOOD.
Jordan L. Hawk is a nonbinary author! Their main series is Whyborne & Griffin which is TEN EVENTUALLY ELEVEN BOOKS LONG. It’s a fantasy historical set in America during the Victorian era, whatever it was called in America. Very Lovecraftian. Good good wizard boy and his dandy PI husband (YES HUSBAND THEY GET MARRIED BITCHES). The sex scenes in the first book are SO FUCKING ROMANCE BOY I DIE. As the series progress, they are Together so we get less scenes and more Plot. I mean, like KJ, the whole thing is Plot and romance is part of Plot, but yeah. They get dark too. Also there’s Dr. Christine Putnam who is the greatest character ever written. And a fish lesbian.
They don’t really have standalones? But if W&G is too big of an undertaking to begin, try Spirits or Hexworld. Spirits is mediums and all that jazz. Hexworld is witch/familiar dynamic that’s basically soulmate trope and also super interesting political climate. I didn’t think I’d be into the familiars being shapeshifters but it was good!
Cat Sebastian is my least favorite of the three because she has no External Plot Only Romance. But the Romance is always good! She only has series, but they don’t necessarily need to be read in order. Ruin of a Rake has an opera box handjob that is SWOON and It Takes Two to Tumble is basically Gay Sound of Music and has A SCENE WHERE A MAN OF THE CLOTH MASTURBATES AS ONE OF THE SEX SCENES. IT’S. HOT.
IF YOU WANT SOME TRANS ROMANCE UP IN HERE.
FUCKING. READ PETER DARLING BY AUSTIN CHANT. TRANSGUY PETER PAN. WITH CAPTAIN HOOK. IT’S SO FUCKING GOOD. YOU WILL CRY.
I read Coffee Boy by him and the sex was good but meh.
The Burnt Toast B&B by Heidi Belleau is THE good contemporary on this list because I can’t fucking STAND when authors use twink unironically and the rest of this book is so good I can ignore that it does that too. The trans sex is so good, I almost cried thinking that someone could view my body that way and them be excited by it. Seriously. The cis guy in it is like “oh huh I never liked deep throating or swallowing semen so blowing a trans guy dick is like, fucking perfect? Also two holes I am the luckiest fucking man alive??????? ALSO HE CAN PICK HOW BIG HIS DICK IS???????????????????” And she pulls all that off without it being like, fetishizing and gross! The dude is just like, oh hey, this is awesome!
There’s also EE Ottoman! I’ve only read Doctor’s Discretion by him, and the sex was SUUUUUUUUUUUPER good.
HONORABLE MENTION.
So, I don’t actually consider the Captive Prince series to be True Romance. Yes, there are Romance Elements, as it basically reads like a tropey fanfic. But it’s more like, a fantasy historical political thriller? It’s like, if Risk was gay and sexy.
I read romance novels all last year, and Captive Prince was the first one that made me realize that I have dated multiple people, and just had multiple people in my life in general, give me the impression that I am hard to love, that I have a difficult personality, that I’m Too Much somehow. And like, seeing how Damen, this beautiful, kind, lawful to a fault, beefcake of a man loves Laurent just the way he is and is like SO FUCKING INTO HIM AND THINKS HE HUNG THE STARS IN THE SKY AND LIKE CAN’T KEEP HIS HANDS OFF HIM AND SUPPORTS HIM AND SHOWS HIM LOVE AND CARE THAT LAURENT HAD BEEN DENIED HIS WHOLE LIFE.
I FUCKING CRIED. AND MY STANDARDS ARE SO GODDAMN HIGH NOW. IT WAS ONE KINGDOM ONCE. I THINK IF I GAVE YOU MY HEART, YOU WOULD TREAT IT TENDERLY.
FRIENDS. IS THAT WHAT WE ARE.
ALSJFLAKSJFAJAOIWJFOSNFSLFOWAIJFOWAIJFWLFJWOEFJOWFMOAWIEFJ.
(Warning with Captive Prince: pedophilia and incest are a major plot point but I feel like it’s handled as well as that could be. Also the first book is basically just Slave Kink: The Novel, but no sex really happens and you’re supposed to hate everyone and be uncomfortable even though you’re a bit turned on. Damen and Laurent invented love literally so it all works out.)
