synopsis In which your best friend, the boy who lived, needs some help breaking into Snape’s classroom to steal back the marauders map. Try not to get caught!

The draft in the emptied halls of Hogwarts had you shivering ever so slightly. You hugged yourself as if to cling onto the last bit of warmth that was coursing through your veins. Trying to keep the sound of your shoes silent as they pressed down onto the hard flooring, while simultaneously speed walking down the halls, proved to be a difficult task. The only sounds you could hear were your shivering breaths and silent clicks of your shoes.

Until suddenly, that wasn't the only noise filling the empty halls.

You thought you were imagining it at first. The sound of soft footsteps right behind you, but every time you turned around, nobody was there, and the sounds of footsteps ceased to a halt. Although, you could've sworn you'd heard a small huff, like breathless laughter.

Glaring slightly at the empty hall behind you, you turned back around and picked up the pace back to your dormitory. Once again, you heard it, faint footsteps behind you. Before you could even turn around again, you felt hot air blow straight into your ear. You let out a silent scream and practically leapt 10 feet in the air. Your fight or flight responses kicked in and you chose fight, throwing your fists in all directions. You swear if this is peeves, you'll —

A cackle rang through your ears, and you raised an eyebrow. This doesn't sound like peeves cackles. Before you could internally go through all possible solutions as to who or what it may be, the sudden appearance of your best friends floating head answered all you question.

Harry wore an expression of great amusement (much to your displeasure), grinning from ear to ear and eyes scrunched up, shaking, trying to hold back his louder laughs that might've escaped and have Filch hobbling down the corridors. Due to his shaking, the rest of his invisibility cloak slipped off, he was clutching his stomach and scrunching up his night robes.

You were the first to say something, "It is never that funny." You glared, crossing your arms. Harry just snickered louder "It absolutely was, you should've seen your face! Oh Merlin, and the way you were punching absolutely nothing, you looked ridiculous." He held up both his fists in the air, mimicking popeye the sailor. At that point, you couldn't stop the grin from spreading across your face, marching over to him and seizing his wrists, you started lightly pushing him. He just grinned even more and started pushing you back lightly as well, so it looked like you both had some inexplicable force holding you together.

It was a normal occurrence to find Harry roaming the great halls at random hours of the night. Hell, you would sometimes tag along with him, usually accompanied by Ron and Hermione as well. This particular night, however, he seemed to be going solo. You couldn't help asking "What are you doing down here at this hour anyways?" His grin fell slightly and he rolled his eyes "ugh, don't get me started..." He said, before getting started. He started going on a long and exaggerated tirade about how earlier in the evening, he tried taking a peek at the marauders map to see if he could sneak into the prefects bathroom and work out the next clue for the Triwizard tournament, only to have Professor Snape apparently 'spawn out of thin air' (his words) and snatch the map from him, of course, deducting Gryffindor house points in the process.

"So, I'm down here to steal it back from his office." He finally concluded with a determined look on his face. You both had stopped pushing each other now, so both your hands were interlocked with his midair above both your heads. Definitely an awkward position to be holding, your arms were starting to strain. After a few seconds of silence, he asked "...want to come with me?" You huffed in amusement "obviously". In response, he smiled, you both dropped your arms and harry went to pick up his invisibility cloak with one hand, and keeping his other hand interlocked with yours. You grabbed one end of the cloak and draped it over yourself, as you've done many times before. Harry had done the same on his end, so you were both fully covered.

You knew this would probably end pretty badly for you both, and you both should probably head back to your dorm rooms and head to bed. For all you knew, Snape was watching both your little names on the map. But then the non-logical part of you thought 'did you really care?'

...no!

So, with your hand interlocked in his, you both set off to Snapes office. Silently giggling with him, the thrill of the adventure gets you both high on dopamine, acting like utter fools. By the time you had both made it to the second floor, you were listening intently to him gossip about Cho and Cedric.

"I mean, I was mad at him for taking Cho to the ball, but when he leaned in, giving me that look and told me the prefects bathroom was a 'good place for a bath' I was just like 'oh merlin is he trying to ask me to-'" You're attention was immediately caught elsewhere when you started hearing the very faint sound of footsteps coming in your direction. "Hey shut it for a moment will you?" You cut him off abruptly, trying to listen to the sound that was getting closer, but of course, Harry gasped and started up again.

"Oh, ok, so I guess your homophobic now! Honestly, I-" You just rolled your eyes and jabbed him in the ribs to get him to shut up again. "Ow! Hate crime!" he said, clutching his side. "Shut up and listen you moron! Someone's coming" Thats what finally got him to shut up, you dragged him backwards with you until you both hit the wall, watching as Filch hobbled into the hallway. You felt Harry squeeze your hand tightly, you heard Filch mutter to himself "pesky brats...I'll find you...two weeks' worth of detention I'm sure" his big eyes darting around the halls, before striding down the hall opposite of where Snape's classroom was. You and Harry both sighed in relief. "We're almost there...let's hope we don't run into anybody else." You just hummed in agreement, scurrying off to the Filch-free hallway and finally making it to the front of Potions classroom.

You blinked in surprise. That was surprisingly easy.

Way to easy.

"I don't trust this, Harry..." You whispered to him, nervousness finally creeping up on you. "This was way easier than we expected. What if Snape's been waiting for us?" He just huffed and squeezed your hand in reassurance. "Well, we've made it this far. No use backing out now, right?" You looked at him for a moment before sighing "No I suppose not..." You murmur as Harry slowly grabs the handle on the door and pulls it.

It's unlocked...

You both look at each other skeptically before shuffling inside and hastily closing the door behind you. Nobody was here, and you both let out a relieved sigh before taking off the invisibility cloak and throwing it on a nearby table. You both wasted no time scouring all the possible places where Professor Snape may have hidden the map. You finally come across the last unopened drawer in the classroom, hidden behind a few spellbooks, you almost missed it. With a flick of your wand, the drawer unlocks and springs open, a worn sheet of parchment sits at the top of all other contents in the drawer.

"Harry! I've found it!" You whisper yell, with another flick of your wand, the map flies into your hand and Harry rushes over. Quickly murmuring "I solemnly swear that I am up to no good." to check if it's the real map, as the contents of the map reveal itself, Harry's grin falls off his face just as fast as it came. "Shit! Snape and McGonagall are on their way now, we need to find a way to sneak out." Your face drops and you both scamper to the cloak on the desk, hastily pulling it over yourselves and standing next to the door, waiting for Snape and McGonagall. Harry's hand sneaks into your own once again just as they open the door, the minute they do, Harry yanks you out the door before it shuts, he yanks you so hard in fact, that you both fall to the floor the minute you're outside the classroom, groaning slightly as you pull yourself off of Harry. "Go, go, go!" You whisper, picking yourselves up and running down the hall as fast as your legs can carry you. You can hear Snape and McGonagall arguing in the distance, but the sound gets fainter and fainter until you can't hear them anymore.

You don't remember how long you both ran before stopping in some random hallway to finally breathe. Your legs felt like jelly, and you pry yourself out of the cloak as Harry hisses "What if someone sees you?!" but at that point you couldn't care anymore. You lean your head against the wall and slide against it, breathing deeply. Then out of seemingly nowhere, Harry starts laughing. You glance at where he's standing and see he's taken off the invisibility cloak, running his hand through his messy hair and chuckling to himself, he's taken to sliding down the wall as well and sitting next to you. You grin and confusion and huff "What're you laughing at?", but that just makes him laugh harder. You don't know if it's the stress of almost getting caught twice, but you start laughing as well. You’re both clutching you stomachs and laughing your asses off like maniacs in the middle of the hallway. You don’t realize how long you both sat in that hallway until you hear footsteps slowly closing in on you both from either side of the hallway.

You feel the color drain from your face and look at Harry. You're both still grinning slightly but understand the severity of the situation and grab the cloak, hastily throwing it over yourselves, adjusting it slightly and standing up with Harry right as both professors and Filch come from either side of the hallway. “Oh, honestly Severus! Potter is not here. He must've just taken the map and run back to bed." You hear Professor McGonagall complain, she definitely looked tired and pissed off and probably wanted nothing more than to go to bed. Unfortunately, Snape was determined to have her witness whatever Harry was up to at late hours of the night. As Snape and Filch started trying to convince McGonagall that Harry was definitely around here somewhere, you both took it as an opportunity to sneak away as quietly as possible. By the time they had all stopped bickering and actually started looking for Harry, you were both already halfway up the staircase, skipping steps to avoid the ones that are faulty or creak.

"...Well, wasn't that something?" Harry whispered at you, keeping his voice down in case they miraculously heard you. You scoffed "I'm never doing this again." He just rolled his eyes at your complaints "Yeah right, you know you'd do anything for me!" he teased, bumping your hips together. You chuckled "Yeah, I guess I would." You watched as his expression softened for a moment before he started blinking erratically and cleared his throat "Don't start getting all sappy on me! It doesn't suit you." You laughed at how emotional he got, and he immediately started bickering with you again, claiming he wasn't sappy, and he was just feeling a bit tired. You rolled your eyes and chose not to respond, instead you swayed your interlocked arms back and forth. After a few seconds of silence, he murmurs "I'd do anything for you, too." You felt your smile widen and just squeezed his hand in acknowledgment.

You both walked in a comfortable silence until you started to approach the Gryffindor dorms, you both took off the cloak and you decided to break the silence. "Well, this is your destination." You can't help but sigh in relief "You know, I definitely thought we were going to get caught." he says, and you can't help but huff. Yeah well, we better hurry to our dorms before-" "Before a professor catches you both? A little bit late for that" A stern voice said, you stiffened and immediately swerved around to find McGonagall glaring down at the both of you. "I'd say a weeks' worth of detention with me and 15 house points deducted from both of you is a decent punishment, don't you agree?" You would've verbally responded to her out of respect, but you were in such shock all you could do was stare at her and nod slightly, due to the lack of response from your partner in crime, you were sure Harry was doing the same thing.

"You're both very fortunate it was I who found you instead of Snape…” She exclaimed, watching as you to continued to gape at her like fish out of water. “Well then, off to bed, both of you!" She demanded, and you and Harry murmured goodnights and apologies to McGonagall before booking it back to your dorms.

"Honestly those two are just like James and Sirius..." McGonagall said to herself, with a hint of a smile on her face.
