unexpected perks of moving to the u.s.a

Parcels arrive overnight instead of 5-7 days ? magic

every 3rd person has a truck or suv or van of some kind; very handy for moving furniture when you have no vehicle of your own because being under 25, having no USA financial history because I left the country when I was 11, and having an international driver's license makes the process of getting a vehicle unnecessarily challenging

people have actually watched my favorite movies here

everyone else does all the talking, i just have to smile and nod :D

farmers markets are amazing and regular and packed with awesome small businesses

there is so much to do, all of the time? and so much nerdy stuff that I love? i gotta pick and choose how to entertain myself.. and just a relatively short drive away, there's even MORE to do?? you drive an hour in NZ, you might see some cows and like... the giant gumboot, or the giant carrot, or the giant L&P bottle. (although, can't beat the nature walks!)

I've been in the states for a week now; politics get brought up occasionally, but for the most part I am surrounded and protected by a band of likeminded coworkers-becoming-friends. I'm lucky to have a very safe place to transition from my NZ life to my USA life.

And I cannot stress enough how challenging this move has been - all the things you wouldn't think about have come with so many more hurdles than the average person has to deal with due to my circumstances. I have no family in the state I have moved to, and only one friend from childhood within a 2 hour drive. My parents are in New Zealand, a vastly different time zone. I can't ask for help for most things. I have no credit score, no financial history, no background history in general -- background checks on my passport come up as suspicious because I am a "ghost" to the government. That mean I couldn't apply for any kind of financing, and was limited in my selection of essential services including internet/mobile/rent/insurance/banks. I was outright rejected for many of my preferred plans due to the ghost status and had to accept plan B's. For the bank I was rejected in online applications but was able to go in person; however it made for a gruelling delay as with the chaos of moving into a home at 11:30pm on a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday were a whirlwind, the banks were closed on the weekend, and I had to wait until Monday to establish an account. Then I didn't have a debit card until the next Friday (I had a travel card, don't worry), which meant I couldn't make wire transfers with the bank which further delayed getting a vehicle (BECAUSE I CAN'T APPLY FOR FINANCING). I still don't have a vehicle.

I'm incredibly grateful for the generosity and kindness of the people here who have helped me out. I had only met three via work-related video chat and text before I arrived late Wednesday March 12th, and suddenly I was introduced to a band of others with a willingness to show me kindness and involve me as part of the team. <3

Heyy, just because I’m in the throes of considering rereading it while I’m on break with nothing to do, shout-out to Doctored Chance by @ollie-alooffloof gotta be one of my favorite non-traditionally-published books 🙏

It’s literally awesome. I read it all in one sitting one random night in June when I randomly found Tobias on Artfight. I stayed up until 6am 😭 It was totally worth it, though, it’s got it all: it’s SO funny, it’s got superhero action, it’s got found family, it’s got murder! I mean, what else could you want? It’s so beautifully written and I’ve gotta lay claim to being Dr. Tobias MacClain’s biggest fan >:3

Not to mention how well-crafted the world is, I mean 👌 mwah, it’s just so fun. The whole structure of it is so interesting, with the concept of certain powers only being in very limited circulation? It’s so cool and opens a lot of doors for how people born with powers might feel very restricted by it all.

…also, I’m jealous that I didn’t come up with it myself lol >:c

As of this week, I will no longer be taking art commissions!

Or, at least, it will be highly unlikely for the foreseeable future and most likely indefinitely. I have filled my last slots for this month, and from February, I will be a hobby artist only with very few exceptions. Thank you to everyone who has supported me and my work over the years! It means so much to me and it has seriously gotten me through so much while battling through uni, living costs, student debt and more.

I start my dream job in mid-March as a veterinarian, and foresee a very busy and exhausting (and rewarding!) year ahead. :) My income will finally be steady after that, so I will likely become a commissioner of art rather than an artist by commission, and I'll pretty much just draw for fun and no longer accept money for my art. :>

Next week I hop on a plane to Singapore and travel Asia for a month with 3 friends from my veterinary cohort, then I will return to New Zealand for 10 days, pack my final bags, and board a one way flight to Florida for my next chapter. I am in a lot of debt but I'm living life anyways   (p.s I am not exactly riveted about the current hateful political and social environment I will be flying into but I am very lucky to have a secure job lined up with a supportive environment.)

Great get online and go to a job board. Indeed, Linkedin whatever. Now you're gonna search for a role that's in your city, fits your qualifications, and doesn't seem like a bad time.

See that easy apply button? Don't hit it they just throw those in the trash. Now you're gonna want to go to the company's website and check their careers page.

Oh? That job doesn't exist anymore. Cool go back to the job board and find another one.

Great you found another job, you're on the company's career page and the job exists!! So you're going to need to make an account on the career page website. They're using Workday, the same site as the last job you applied for? Who cares? You need to make another account for THIS job's workday page.

Now you're going to upload your resume. That'll autopopulate about 15 boxes with everything on your resume, except formatted wrong and with tons of errors. So just go through and painstakingly check the dates on all of that and rewrite everything you already laid out in an aesthetically pleasing format on your resume.

Ok time for the cover letter, explain why this specific job and company are deeply important to you. You love their mission statement and wouldn't even laugh if their ceo was gunned down in the street. You'll really want to reiterate the things you just spent the last 20 minutes filling out on the resume section

(Remember to include language from the job description, people who work in HR are lower than dogs and they need patterns or they get confused.) Write about a page, but hey don't sound too desperate or robotic this is where they judge your character!

Maybe add your portfolio site at the end here, who knows if that helps no one has ever clicked mine haha.
