Day 3056 Roxas

i can't stop thinking about roxas as a metaphor for sora's trauma... he lives in days trying to understand concepts like love, friendship, and attachment, experiencing it all without awareness. someone else's love uses him as a vessel, like a stranger, as he tries desperately to make sense of and find his friend. it doesn't matter to him why he's feeling any of this, or why any of it is happening, as long as he gets to see xion again. his devotion is so absolute it's almost blinding. when he finally loses his best friends, he doesn't fully understand what's happening, and can't articulate what any of it means. there's rage and frustration as he realizes he doesn't understand anything, and he never stops fighting for his friend's memory (until he gets his memory wiped) or his own freedom to be his own person.

consider sora in kh1. his emotions don't get the same focus they do in kh2, but through roxas and days, his pain and confusion become clearer, revealing how losing his home and his friends was traumatizing for him; he didn't understand the experience, nor the effect it had on him, especially since he has a tendency to bury his feelings. his confusion, anxiety, loneliness, and frustration are all the same as roxas'; they are the same, despite being separate people in totally different situations.

it seemed to me like sora felt more at peace in kh2 than in the beginning of CoM, despite having supposedly nearly identical memories; my guess as to why is because roxas is where he put all those emotions he didn't allow himself to feel. their fight in the world that never was is for so many reasons: not only does roxas just want his life back, but he's still feeling the same confusion and rage he was feeling at the end of days, still holding any despair sora felt in kh1, and still angry at sora and still frustrated with his own existence; he's desperate to do anything with these emotions, to make himself real, to make sora face these things instead of pushing them away. it's a cry for help and an expression of resentment that ends ultimately in understanding, acceptance, almost forgiveness, at least on roxas' end.

all of this inner turmoil and sora seems almost oblivious to it. he buries these emotions, becoming a stranger to himself much the same way roxas was, without realizing it. they mirror each other in a very intimate way, but never totally let go of their individuality. roxas is both himself and a manifestation of sora's emotions, a character and a metaphor. he lives on the edge of nonexistence, even in his own storyline. he's an incredible feat of writing.

AITA for lying to and abandoning my friends?

I, uh. I know that, um. Sounds really bad, but hear me out.

A few months ago, I (16M) was essentially kidnapped, had everything except my name and memory stolen from me, and thrust somewhere completely unfamiliar. I met two people there (15N) (17M), and they were really nice, but I figured they wouldn't believe me if I told them the truth about where I'm from, so, uh. I lied to them and told them I lost my memory.

I would have told them the truth soon afterwards, but some stuff happened that made it really risky to do so.

And then, um, a few months later, I found what might be a way home, but by that point I had learned that I had been kidnapped in order to save the place I was kidnapped to, and I. Really, really didn't want to do that, it sounded really scary. So, um. I took the way home, and now I'm back home.

But my friends from that place are still there, and that place probably still needs saving. But I really don't want to go back there, because that place was really really scary.

So, um. AITA?

Although Sora's brow is tight and his jaw is clenched, he doesn't seem completely opposed to that notion, however bluntly Roxas phrased it. ❝ Listen...nobody deserves to go through any of that stuff you went through. Really. It must have been scary...but if the others are really as nice as you say, then why did you leave them there? You have to think about them, too, not just yourself. Maybe... ❞

Sora casts an apologetic look to Roxas for just a moment.

❝ Maybe you didn't ask to be the hero for that place. Maybe you didn't ask for any of that stuff. But if you don't want to go back and save it for that wor— that place's sake...go back for your friends. It sounds like they need you. Besides, if you tell them the truth, I'm sure they'll do everything in their power to help you. ❞

Roxas swallows thickly when Sora meets his eyes.

❝ ...How are they supposed to trust you if you won't tell them the truth, or if you won't go back when they need you? ❞ he asks. ❝ How can you call yourself their friend? ❞
