In complex dissociative disorders, headspaces/innerworlds are often defense mechanics a young child comes up with to feel safe. But, for you, it might just be somewhere to hang out with your headmates! Both are normal experiences, and should be appreciated!

do you have any tips for making a more welcoming/friendly headspace? over the past four years where we've known about our plurality, every headspace we've succeeded in creating has been... kind of gloomy, and impersonal, almost? one was a dimly lit room with dark hallways and such, and everything looked kind of run down and broken. our current one is a lot more clean and purposeful, but it kind of has the same energy as a school or work building, with cold overhead lights and very little decoration. it also has the same issue with long hallways that look kind of creepy and ominous. these places have/had pretty chill vibes i think, but they look like the setting for a psychological horror movie, despite the fact that we didn't originally visualize them that way •́⁠ ⁠ ⁠‿⁠ ⁠,⁠•̀

Hiya! We think that headspaces can work a bit differently for different systems, but visualization and imagination are usually big parts of the headspace-creation process! They might sometimes need to require some conscious maintenance in order to preserve their vibes. Occasionally areas of our own headspace can get a bit fuzzy or change in unwanted ways if we don’t spend time consciously working on them and adjusting them to reflect how we want them to appear! >w<

That being said, maybe y’all can try setting aside some time like once a week or something to work on changing the vibes of your headspace? By doing things like imagining what you want for your headspace or even actively doing construction work internally!

If you’re looking for inspiration, Pinterest and Unsplash are both great places to search for images that fit a certain aesthetic, scenery, or vibe! And we also set up the blog @headspace-visuals recently where we will do our best to help folks find some images to help inspire their headspace building process :33

Headspaces can be really really vast, and I do think some systems have headspaces which are not so easily adjusted or changed. We aren’t sure how y’all’s headspace works, but if you find you can’t really consciously change much about your headspace, maybe y’all could try leaving to find a different area to settle? And keep in your mind an idea of what you’d like to find ideally so that you’re more likely to stumble across it? Idk, this is just a thought!

But we do hope this helps somewhat! We hope y’all can find success with improving the vibes of your headspace! And if anyone else who reads this has tips for 🦇/🦀, please feel welcome to share! :3

It always looks to be night , the only lights coming from the lights on the arcade games. To get here , you need to go down the fronting stairs and go right.

The carpet has this pattern spread throughout everywhere in the innerworld besides the front room.

This is the path to the fronting room. When there is someone in front , the lights are on. When there is not , the lights are off.

The front room is akin to the area behind a register at an arcade. There are prizes and snacks in shelving on the walls.

This is the little / syskid area. They are guarded by a caretaker that stays with them. To get here , you go down the fronting stairs and go left.

Flower Field Innerworld

Entrance Field

The entrance flower field is vast, it looks near endless. It is always in a state of sunset. The temperature is average. Breezes occasionally wash through the air.

Medium Field

As you walk further and further, the flowers get more sparse. The grass gradually gets taller as well. Continuing to walk, you see bright colors in the distance.

Organized Field

The flowers start to emerge once more. However, this time they are all neatly in rows. Many colors of flowers are here; orange, yellow, pink, white, magenta, etc.

Whenever you pick a certain color of flower, it brings you to a certain location.

Rabbit Method:

To the immediate left of the entrance area, there are holes in the ground, large enough for anyone to fit in. These are large rabbit tunnels with signs inside showing where to go.

Basement / Sleepover Themed Front Room

Day Mode

During the day, this fronting room is a warm and shockingly spacious location despite how cozy everything feels. Pillows, blankets, and squishy stuffed animals litter the floor just about everywhere you step. Some pillows and blankets have been stolen away to a corner to make a comfortable nook for the less-social alters. Blankets serve as the roof and ceiling of this place, illuminated by strings of fairy lights and small glowing motes of sunshine streaming in from somewhere beyond the front room. If you put your head against the walls and listen close, you can sometimes make out idle conversation of memories that linger outside the bounds of headspace.

A large projector screen propped up in the front part of this room serves as a window to the outside world. This projector plays what is currently going on as well as providing subtitles for alters who are hard of hearing. Switching the subtitles on is surprisingly easy. The in-system subtitles can be finicky, lag a few seconds behind speech, and can sometimes get things wrong. Even still, alters frequently comment on how they give a nostalgic feeling similar to captions on older televisions.

Bodily actions and movements are controlled through use of the laptop computer connected to the projector. This laptop has a special switch on the side, making it able to change forms if needed. It is most often turned into a TV remote, but other forms may also be used.

Exiting the front room is as easy as walking out of the fort’s blanket flaps. Simple and easy!

Night Mode

You may be thinking “ah, this sort of fronting room can’t possibly be comfortable at night with all of these lights!” Not to worry! This fronting room has the ability to change its appearance based on the time of day. While it is well-lit and comfortable during the day, it becomes much calmer at night. Fairy lights and sunbeams are replaced with soothing swirling galaxy lights that cover the walls and roof in mesmerizing patterns. Blankets and pillows are automatically placed into pairs to create beds for those who linger near front or fall asleep mid-fronting.

The large projector screen is traded out for a smaller television that can be adjusted brighter or lower as needed. All other functions of the projector remain the same: subtitles, the ability to switch forms, and the familiarity of a laptop resting on your knees. One thing that does change is the room’s appearance. Rather than only being a blanket fort, there is also a small wooded area outside of the fort styled like a larger basement. It contains a comfortable couch to sit upon, an armchair, a side table lamp, and an ottoman on which to kick up your feet. This is perfect for alters who prefer to work on their own for system management during the night. Some folks claim there is an adjacent room for late night snacking but not everyone seems to be able to access this. Then again, it may be just a dream…
