So below is, the original version of the scene that begins on page 137 in City of Glass, “Jace looked at Alec steadily. “What’s between you and Magnus Bane? In the original version, Jace actually does kiss Alec, more to make a point than anything else, but the resultant scene made me laugh and made my editor laugh, hysterically. It didn’t work — made the emotional impact of Jace telling off Alec less. I warn you, it is not romantic.  - Cassie

Jace looked at Alec steadily. Then he said, “What’s between you and Magnus Bane?” Alec’s head jerked to the side, as if Jace had slapped him or pushed him. “I don’t — there’s nothing —” “I know better,” Jace said, forestalling him. “I’m not stupid. Tell me the truth.” “There isn’t anything between us,” Alec said — and then, catching the look on Jace’s face, added with great reluctance, “any more. There’s nothing between us any more. Okay?” “And why is that? Magnus really liked you.” “Drop it, Jace,” Alec said in a warning tone. Jace was having none of being warned. “Magnus says it’s because you’re hung up on me. Is that true?” There was a moment of utter silence. Then Alec gave a despairing howl of horror and put his hands up to cover his face. “I am going to kill Magnus. Kill him dead.” “Don’t. He cares about you. He really does. I believe that,” Jace said, managing to sound only a little bit awkward. “Look. I don’t want to push you into anything, but do you maybe want to —” “Call Magnus? Look, that’s a dead end, I know you’re trying to be helpful, but —” “—kiss me?” Jace finished. Alec looked as if he were about to fall off his chair. “WHAT? What? What?” “Once what would do.” Jace did his best to look as if this were the sort of suggestion one made all the time. “I think it might help.” Alec looked at him with something like horror. “You don’t mean that.” “Why wouldn’t I mean it?” “Because you’re the straightest person I know. Possibly the straightest person in the universe.” “Exactly,” Jace said, and leaned forward, and kissed Alec on the mouth. The kiss lasted approximately four seconds before Alec pulled forcefully away, throwing his hands up as if to ward Jace off from coming at him again. He looked as if he were about to throw up. “By the Angel,” he said. “Don’t ever do that again.” “Oh yeah?” Jace grinned, and almost meant it. “That bad?” “Like kissing my brother,” said Alec, with a look of horror in his eyes. “I thought you might feel that way.” Jace crossed his arms over his chest. “Also, I’m hoping we can just gloss over all the irony in what you just said.” “We can gloss over whatever you want to,” Alec said fervently. “Just don’t kiss me again.” “I’m not going to. I have other business to take care of.” Jace stood up, kicking his chair back. “If anyone asks where I am, tell them I went for a walk.” “Where are you actually going?” Alec asked, watching him walk to the door. “To see Clary?” “No.” Jace shook his head. “I’m going to the Gard. I’m going to break Simon out of jail.”

Can't Fuck Bracket: Group Stage Release Schedule

Alright everyone, now that Group 1 has been posted, I'm going to be a normal poll runner and post the release date for the group stage

Each group has 3 characters, and I'm going to release them in 3 clusters so there aren't too many at once

Obviously, not all characters who fit into a particular group are in it, because I needed to organize them and it would be impossible to find 32 forms of criteria that would apply to 3 characters and 3 characters ONLY in a group of 96. A Dark Worry Masterpost

Alec Lightwood stared at the box that had been delivered to him by a postman. He thought it was one of Magnus' usual mail, until he peered into its contents. It were the Clave files that had been stolen. It left him quite baffled. How many people had read its contents and why on earth had it been posted back to him? Was the thief remorseful? Had the thief been betrayed Whatever it was, Alec knew he was never going to hide these at his office again. Now, Simon and Clary were put to tracking down the postman, whilst Isabelle, Magnus and Jace tried to find the thief whilst Alec arranged himself an office at Magnus' apartment. Being the most important man in the Clave in Exile was more stressful then he had ever imagined.

Riding the winds and feeling them tickle his feathers was ever growing to be Ash's favorite hobby in the world. He needed a break and to breathe for a while after partnering up with Manuel. With his mother now being secure thanks to the deal, Ash finally had the chance to just take off for a flight. Ash enjoyed the whiffs of scents that flared in his nostrils if he flew close enough to the many trees. He had decided to fly to the house of the First Heir once more, finally allowing himself to give in to his temptuous thoughts of what had happened to Drusilla since he helped her escape from Faerie. He had first considered flying to L.A, as the Blackthorns run the Institute there, but with her closeness to the First Heir he decided to first check there considering it was closer to the secret tunnel from Faerie before heading to Los Angeles if he could not find her or catch word of her. He decided to fly more stealthily, not wanting to reveal himself to the First Heir or his family. Whilst saving Dru might have earnt her trust, he was not going to engage in risks of getting shot down by the First Heir or his family. He crept closer, flying swiftly from one high tree branch to another until he saw the gathering of a group. The First Heir held a small, young child who had her little arms wrapped around his neck and seemed to be babbling something not too far from him to see. Everyone else seemed to be teenagers, friends of the Herondale boy, probably. His heart skipped a beat as he saw Druilla amongst them. She had made it safely back after all. The Blackthorn girl was caught in a conversation with an Asian looking girl sporting shoulder length black hair and pretty plain, nude colored clothes opposed to Drusilla's more darker, casual goth aesthetic. He wondered if they were friends. Ash didn't really had friends, Janus was more like family then a friend and neither the Unseelie King or his parents allowed people of his age to be near him and possibly become a cherished friend. Royalty was not awarded those kind of luxuries, his mother often would say on the notion of friendship. Ash accepted that as part of his burden as a prince. Still, he couldn't help but feel curious. What was it like, to just be able to tell your secrets and most inane thoughts alike to someone who genuinely liked your company. He spotted the Rosales boy walking their way and it seemed like his strength was returning ever so slightly, they must have been feeding him well from the moment he got back from his prison cell. Drusilla immediately turned around and shot the Rosales boy a warm smile that chilled Ash to the bone. He did not like the way she was smiling at the Nephilim boy. With a churning stomacn, he watched as the boy returned her smile with one equally warm his own, the chemistry being apparant even from this distance. Ash couldn't help but feel jealous, and he quickly turnt around and leaped back to the branches, back to the sky once he was far enough. He would convince her he was the right choice for her, someday.

Tessa ceased her pacing and rushed to the staircase to see both Will and James standing by the door. James had been bent down, fixing a latch on his truck, before she looked up and saw his mother. Tessa’s heart skipped a beat and she stood frozen for a split second before she quickly went down the staircase, clutching the banister as she descended.

James smiled weakly at her and she came down. Went she reached the final steps, she practically jumped them and threw her arms around her son. She held him against her, caressing his hair and rubbing his back lovingly.

I hate booktok and I'm generally not a fan of wattpad. The purpose of my argument is not to defend those people or anyone else who engages with fiction with only profit in mind, I actually care more about the art of fanfiction rather than the economics. But unfortunately economics is inextricably linked to almost everything in this world.

Agreed.

I'd love to see more grand and ambitious fan projects, but aside from a few exceptional works created through collaboration and rough unpaid labor, fanworks are mostly relegated to being a hobby rather than anything a person can passionately pursue with their full effort. I think this is a waste of good ideas! Imagine how many potentially great stories have gone unwritten because the author had to focus on writing profitable things rather than what they actually want to write.

I would very much like to point out that the much of the current cast and writers for long-running sci-fi franchises such as Doctor Who and Star Trek were fans of the series long before they started working on the shows themselves. David Tennant, Russell T. Davies, Ncuti Gatwa. Writers for the Doctor Who expanded universe have adapted their own DWEU material into television episodes (Paul Cornell, for one). Wil Wheaton was a major fan of Star Trek: The Original Series when he was cast to play Ensign Wesley Crusher on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Hell, David Tennant got into acting in the first place because of Doctor Who, and then wound up playing two different incarnations of the Doctor onscreen over the span of several years.

A lot of writers for expanded universe material for Star Wars, Star Trek, Doctor Who, usw. got their start writing fanfiction for those shows/movies. Diane Duane not only writes her original Young Wizards series but started out in Star Trek fandom and has written for several other TV shows and video games (along with writing several Star Trek tie-ins). (Spock's World, my beloved.)

Nancy Holder writes original fiction but I'm primarily familiar with her work on media tie-ins for Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Teen Wolf.

And don't get me started on long-running book series that have been primarily written/taken over by ghostwriters (The Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, that period in Animorphs midway through the series, usw.) which is, basically, more or less published fanfiction. (Eric van Lustbader taking over the Jason Bourne novels after Robert Ludlum's death, anyone?) Or all the people who grew up reading Marvel or DC comics (for example) and now write/draw for them themselves. Same goes for other major franchises in other countries.

So, you very much can make a career officially writing for/being in a franchise you're a fan of. That is definitely a thing that happens.

I also imagine there'd be less cases of obvious plagiarism (in the form of selling other people's books as if they were your own) if the author was allowed to sell it themselves. Though that isn't really my main focus, I just mention it because you seem really intent on tying everything I say back to that, and I figure I should at least address it briefly if you're not going to pay attention to anything else I say.

Serial-numbers-filed-off original works that started out as fanfiction are not the problem here, and I personally enjoy reading works like that because it's fun picking up on which fandom it might have originated from. Doing something like that is not plagiarism. Legally, Christian Grey is not Edward Cullen. Clary Fray/Fairchild is not Ginny Weasley / Jace Herondale is not Draco Malfoy. (More specifically, Clary and Jace are derived from Cassandra Clare's fanon/fanfic versions of Ginny and Draco but are still not canon!Ginny and canon!Draco. It's... complicated. And there's a whole plagiarism wank surrounding Cassandra Clare even before she published The Mortal Instruments series. I digress.)

The problem the original post was about was people stealing other people's fanfiction off of AO3, printing and binding the fanfics, and then selling them on Etsy and Amazon as fanfiction that they wrote themselves. Which, again, is illegal on several fronts and ethically a shitty thing to do. It also puts all of fandom at risk.

Printing and binding fanfiction for your own personal use? Perfectly fine. Selling someone else's fanfiction that you printed and bound in order to personally profit off their free work, and without the fan author's permission, no less? That is what has so many people actively involved in fandom who know our history pissed off. It's a major violation of fanfic and fandom etiquette.

Our fandom forbearers did NOT suffer through Anne Rice, strikethrough, and other bullshit for fucking ACOTAR and Harry Potter fans to fucking ruin it for all of us by selling fanfiction. I am not losing novel length yaoi epics because some of you don't know how to act in fannish spaces and yes I do blame the booktokification of fanfic but I also blame those of you that treat fandom like content to consume and not a community to engage with.

Gadreel was the eldest of her family (she was the queen) her father gave her a land as a gift on her coranation , called Idris, however, she said that she would give her land to her disendants to whomeever wants it

Her younger brother, Raziel fell in love with Johnathan Shadowhunter and Gadreel being the Queen at that time refused to awknolwdge it as Raziel was a spiteful dick and Johnathan disevered a better man, when Gadreel died, Ithuriel who disendants are the Herondales took the Land and claimed it as he liked this person, but Raziel took it of him as he is the second born and gifted it to Johnathan Shadowhunter, Ithuriel and Raziel was banished from the Kingdom by his nephew Samuel Morningstar who was now King. However the Princes hid Idris from the King, so Samuel was unaware

However the disendants of Gadreel are Tessa, Magnus and Malcom Fade, the land rightfully belongs to either one of them

So Gadreel disendants are Magnus Bane, Tessa Gray, and Malcom Fade, including others which are unknown

Raziel took the name Shadowhunter and left and went into his own witness protection, the Shadowhunter family name was changed and is now found in East and South Asia,

Ithuriel fell in love with a woman who was an Herondale but left before he knew she was pregnant.

Johnathan Shadowhunter created his own government and gathered his closest friends such as the Lightwoods, Herondales, Morgernsterns, Fairchilds, Starkweather, Dragonway, Blackthorns families to alliance to form a secret country. The history of its country was left in the accords and securly locked away and only the president or some council can access this.

And Alec finds this all at the accords, and he goes and tells Jace, Jace decides its best to keep it silent and go through it later and discuss this with his mother, Alec takes the file home to show his mother, however baby Max was there, and a 2 papers slipped out talking about the Idris and Max picked it up and starting to draw, Magnus came a few minutes later to pick up Max, and he sees the paper, he takes the paper and hides it as Alec comes to greets him.

Maryse also tells Alec that its best to keep this silent, as thats the way it would be and that people wont like this

As Maryse goes to Jocelynn and they talk, about Alec bringing the papers outside of Idris, which Jocelynn just says that its for the best that they know about it, and that it wasnt fair for them to keep it a secret

Now back at the Lightwoods, Magnus talks to Tessa about the piece of information that he has, and that he still hasnt talked to Alec about it. Tessa suggests that they both talk to their fathers since they probably would know more about this, and their own history.

Alec notices that a page is missing, as he retraces his steps but cant find it, he then begins to worry and tells Jace he lost a paper, and Jace tells him not too worry since its just a piece of paper and that its nothing, which kind of puts Alec's mind at ease.

Now Tessa and Magnus have a talk with their fathers, as Asmodeus knew that Idris was a gift to his Great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great grandmother, and he knows that Samael has notes who also lives in New York

Magnus and Tessa visit their great Uncle who shows him the notes and that the the eldest son of the Shadowhunter (after its change) lives in Tokyo, so Tessa asks Jem if they want to go on this trip to Tokyo which he agrees, and Magnus ask Alec, leaving Max with his grandmother, and Mina with her uncle.

Now back in New York, Asmodeus goes to the Lightwoods and hands Maryse the paper, telling her that he knows, but keeping this a secret will probably anger his family as he can confirm that the romers are true, Asmodeus also tells her that Magnus is going to Tokyo to visit a great uncle, who knows more about this

Asmodeus babysits Max, as Maryse text Alec that Magnus knows but Alec has not seen it, so she tells Luke, who then says to get to Tokyo,

Max has the second piece of paper as he takea Asmodeus to his cot and and he shows his grandfather his drawing, which is the family tree and also the secret plan to overthrow Gadreel as her young brothers were both asshats at that time. Now Asmodeus takes the picture of the paper and sends it to Leviathan who is in Tokyo, and also to Belial who is on his way to London.

Asmodeus calls Magnus, but it gets disconnected, as Max begins to cry for food.

A few hours later, Tessa, Jem, Alec and Magnus are at Haneda Airport in Tokyo, however they both get off sepretly.

Magnus begings to tell Alec stories about his first time in Tokyo and also says he has visted Idris which is quite busy like Tokyo but small

Alec asks when he went to Idris, which Magnus says he only went once when he was a teenager

Tessa and Magnus say that they have a family living here, Magnus gets a missed call and a long text from his dad, while Tessa gets the image and nothing else.

Alec gets two calls one from his mother, and the second his father in law, and a text from his mom, saying that Magnus knows

Alec realizes he has no signal, but Magnus gets to his Uncle Leviathan's house, as Tessa and Jem head to Samael appartment

Leviathan is a popular influence, and also works for the British and Japanese Navy and is now an animator for a anime studio, also Simon loves him and has met him twice at anime conventions.

Magnus shows the image to Alec as Alec says he didnt know about it until now.

Tessa rings Magnus saying that before Gadreel tragic death, her younger brothers were plotting to take the throne and the empire

However, Gadreel has four children, and the eldest married twice one to Miran who was killed when their child was two a few weeks after Gadreel death, and the next marriage was to Lucas Morngingstar, Samuel took the name Morningstar after his mother and Wife death, and Samuel wanted to charge his uncles for treason, but banished them as they asked for forgivness, Idris was supposted to be his but that was changed by Ithuriel.

Tessa also tells Magnus that Robert Lightwood and Imogen Herondale must know and both are death, but Jace may know.

Magnus hugs Alec, and tells him its not his fault and that he was sorry for dragging him out, Alec and Magnus go on a week date in Tokyo before coming back, Alec decides that he would allow Gadreel disendants to enter and run alongside him, which angers a few citizens, Tessa and Magnus goes to talk to Jace, who says his grandmother never told him.

Magnus and Tessa decides its best to stay out of Idris politics and it wasnt really their home.

So Alec makes his father in law the vice and also a member of the council

It makes me sad to think of it. Kit is a good kid who deserves a good, ordinary life. I know that’s what Jem and Tessa want for him, more than anything, after the chaos that was his growing up. But I am not sure he will have a choice in the matter. Fae may not let him choose. - Magnus to Alec (Secrets of Blackthorn Hall) 

(This is me, defying Magnus and Cassie's whole arc for Kit, or at least twisting it, so he gets his happy ending. Er- so there's still angst but look, part two will be happier- happiness through angst, mmkay? 😅

When he woke up, Ty was beside him. Time must’ve passed from the battle because his face was no longer a blood-stained, desperate ricus; the last image Kit had seen before he passed out. 

There was a softness in Ty’s sharp angles, despite purple shadows highlighting his left cheek; there was a release in his jaw, which had been constantly tense since Livvy had passed on in Thule. A lightness in his storm-grey eyes that told Kit it was all going to be okay.  

“We won.” It wasn’t a question. 

Ty nodded. “But…”

Kit had already known what was missing. The power that had thrummed in his chest, the heaviness of pure energy that he had worn like a mantle for the past few years, the electricity in his veins. It was all gone. 

He closed his eyes. “I know.”

Ash let out a sigh- and Dru tightened her hold on his hand, providing moral support. 

“I am forever indebte-”

“Shut up,” Kit said amiably. “You would’ve done the same thing for me.”

There was silence between the three of them. Maybe it was true. Maybe it wasn’t. Didn’t matter.

“Plus- I never wanted any of this-” Kit waved his hand around the Seelie Court, decorated to the brim with riotously-coloured flowers and filled with partying Fae. “Have fun playing King of the Castle. You’re much better suited to it.”

Ash rolled his eyes. “The prophecy never mentioned which one of us had to take the actual responsibility for ruling. It’s not too late- you sure you don’t want to rock-paper-scissor for it?” 

Dru snorted lightly as Kit grinned and held up his hands, declining. “King Kit would’ve been too on the nose,” she said. 

“Exactly - plus kinda think you need magic to be a faerie king,” He sketched a full bow he had learned from Kieran, appropriate for a Queen Consort, wondering if she would pick up on it. 

She narrowed her eyes and Kit was delighted at her suspicious look. 

Then he turned serious for a moment. “But- I do have a few loose ends that I might need to tie up.” The folk in the forest, and Juno and the others who had helped him during his brief reign. To be exiled forever from Faerie– Ash was within his right to do so. Or at least, heavily restrict Kit’s access, given his Nephilim blood. But he was banking on some good will being carried over from his First Heir heritage. 

Ash held out his hand. “You are always welcome here, my brother.” A pendant flashed in his hand- a similar trinket to Cristina and Jaime’s eternidads.

Kit accepted it with quiet thanks, beating down a brief pang of jealousy at Ash’s ease and fluidity of summoning it.

Alec raised an eyebrow. “It doesn’t normally work like this, Kit.” But his face wasn’t unsympathetic, and Kit was fairly sure he was going to get his way.

“You would’ve lost me to the Faerie Courts, if things hadn’t turned out differently,” Kit said, trying to keep from crossing his arms, remain relaxed. “Also consider - it works for the Amish. They have like- an 80% return rate for their rumspringa. Consider it something like that for me.” He didn’t want to be adversarial with Alec. He wasn’t sure what the future held but he didn’t want this door closed forever. 

“Are you coming back?” Alec asked, his blue eyes grave below dark eyebrows. 

Kit shrugged. “I might not. That’s the risk you have to take. But if you say no, it’s not exactly endearing me to Shadowhunter life, is it?” he countered.

Alec sighed. “No, not at all. But you have to understand- usually when people leave, it’s permanent. They can’t return. It’s the law.”

“So change it,” Kit countered. “It’s a bad law. You’re the Consul- that’s within your power.”

A hint of a smile crossed Alec’s face. “You’ve been spending too much time with the Blackthorns.” 

Despite Kit’s attempt to keep a steady countenance, something must’ve slipped through, as Alec sighed. “All right- I’ll see what I can do.”

“And don’t make it an exception just because it’s me,” Kit pressed. “Really- you should let all Shadowhunter kids have that choice.”

“I know.” Alec’s voice was firm. “Now, get out of my office and stop telling me how to do my job.” But he smiled too. “Enjoy your mundane year.”

Kit left the Gard feeling like a second invisible burden had lifted like wings off his shoulders.

“Not fair! You’re abandoning me just when I’m about to get my training wheels taken off,” Ellie complained, her voice sharp on the phone. “I haven’t shown you my wicked demon-slaying prowess yet.”

“Not sure that you’re gonna get to do that much demon-slaying in upstate New York,” Kit said. “Apparently the second last stop before Boringtown. Or that’s what Magnus keeps insisting is  the case.”  

“Hey! We’ve definitely seen a couple of raveners around. But more importantly, second years get more privileges to visit the local town, which is very Hogsmeade of them,” Ellie admitted. “Okay… but you’ll be back for my Ascension ceremony, right?”

Kit smiled. “Wouldn’t miss it for the world.” But he suddenly shivered, as if a cold wind had blown through the room.

“Am I the last one?” 

“To say good-bye to?” Kit felt rooted to the spot. He hated this. He wanted to go to Ty, who was standing behind his chair, as if to shield himself from Kit. His eyes kept sliding past Kit’s to the gold and green paneling behind. 

“Yes.”

“Yeah,” Kit said. “I said good-bye to Tessa and Jem and Mina, and then asked Tessa to make me Portal to Blackthorn Hall.” 

“Hmmm.” Ty put down his tools, letting one of his long, elegant hands smooth over what looked like one of his Sensors. It was calm and deliberate, and if Kit hadn’t spent months with Ty, relearning every little tic, studying every small movement as if he could etch it on his heart, he would’ve thought Ty didn’t care. 

“Ty- you understand why I have to go, right?” Some of the misery must have bled through in his voice, given how sharply Ty had looked up, his hands fluttering briefly before calming. 

Their eyes met across the room, and Kit clenched his fists, willing himself not to move. He wished. Slowly, Ty walked towards him. Kit could feel his heart beating wildly and he didn’t stop his traitorous hands from reaching out, wrapping Ty in a tight embrace. 

“Kit. I need you,” Ty’s voice was barely above a whisper, said into Kit’s ear. He took a deep breath. And then another. And another. Kit breathed in sync with him. “I know,” Kit said. “I do too,” he admitted. 

They held one another, as close as they had in the caves of faerie. As they had in the safehouses of Thule. As they had in the ruins of Edom. 

Kit wondered why this was the hardest embrace to break. Perhaps it was because this time, they had a choice what they did next, rather than a destiny to fulfil. Perhaps it was because he was still choosing to walk away from it all. 

But it’s different this time, he tried to remind himself.   

Ty pulled back. “But you need to go,” he said. “I also need you to go.”

“Hey,” Kit tried to keep it light, despite the fierce ache in his chest. “I thought we stopped saying that kind of stuff to one another after Thule.”

Ty smiled but it didn’t reach his eyes. “You’re the one going away again. I thought this time I could at least have a say.”

Kit winced and Ty’s face crumpled. “Sorry. That’s not what I meant to say,” Ty said. He muttered something under his breath that Kit couldn’t quite hear. 

He looked directly at Kit. “You’re going because you want to figure out who you are, outside of your lineage,” he said softly. He reached up to trace Kit's jawline, sending a shiver down Kit’s spine. “And you can’t do that here in the Shadow World.” 

Kit nodded.

Ty dropped his hand. “The glamour is very subtle but you do look different. I expect that’s part of it.”

Kit sighed. “Yeah, I asked Tessa and Catarina to put on their strongest spells, so that I’m disguised completely as a mundane.”

“That’s smart,” Ty’s gaze was looking at his neck, wrists, forearms- all now completely devoid of Marks, including his very first rune, the voyance one given to him by Ty.  

“Will you be okay here?” Kit hated how wistful his voice sounded. 

“I will be,” Ty said, and he was already looking back at his sensor. 

Kit wasn’t offended. He knew that Ty had his work as a Centurion, Anush, Irene… he had his family- who were all helping him heal from Livvy’s passing. Kit wasn’t his whole world. And that was a good thing. 

But just as quickly, Ty was back watching him. He looked steadily at Kit. Unlike others, he didn’t ask if Kit would come back. 

Instead he said: “I’ll be here.” 

And Kit, with his eyes starting to blur with tears, leaned forward. He kissed Ty and then left.
