Something which I think is kind of under-discussed regarding the Princess is how lonely she is, esp in contrast to you (the player). From the start of the game, you're never alone. You've got the Narrator - despite how questionable his company is - and the Voice of the Hero, then slowly all of your other voices. She doesn't have that. We see in Princess and the Dragon, every time a new loop starts she's completely alone with only the thought that this is what she deserves. You're the only thing she has.

Shifty asks "Why wouldn't I be kind to you? You're the only thing I know which isn't me." And we see in the game - with some exceptions, like the Witch - the Princess' goal come chapter 2 is always to have your company. Sometimes it's to subjugate you, like the Tower, and sometimes it's for help escaping, but she's almost always seeking your companionship in some way.

But you've got your voices, and the Narrator. You never really needed her, did you? I'm thinking about PATD again, where you can spend the whole chapter bonding with her only to immediately turn on her the second you get your body back ("Good to be back, boys"). In the final cabin at the end of the game, the Heart Princess can mention the whole conflict boils down to whether Shifty (and by extension, the Princess herself) "should" get to exist. If you kill the Heart Princess, you've still got your voices. There's no ending where she lives on alone. I don't think she'd even WANT an ending like that.

She just makes me very sad. You're the only thing she knows, and in some routes you're just. Relentlessly cruel to her.

I hope this isn't too much of a bother, but could we possibly get a design breakdown of Princess Iron Fan? Like inspiration and references? I can't overstate how well the design works and how beautiful i think it is

(Sorry this took a while to get to, by the way, things have been kinda crazy right now so I've been a bit busy)

When I was designing PIF i was mainly inspired by the Feitian/飞天, which are depicted as beautiful flying celestials in Buddhism, skilled in music and dance. The Feitian in art aren’t depicted wearing traditional hanfu, but rather outfits that consist of bandeaus, pants, and scarves that are influenced by Indian clothing (I'm not sure if it's noticeable at a first glance but my design of Iron Fan is actually wearing long pants, rather than a skirt like in the show)

I found these specific pieces on pinterest originally that introduced me to this style of clothing, and when I saw them I just knew I had to use them for my Princess Iron Fan design.

(These pieces were made by Qi Sheng Luo and Light Moon respectively which can be found on artstation.)

When I was looking for references I also made a point to look at portrayals of Iron Fan in different media iterations, including stage plays, movies/shows (both animated and live action), novel descriptions, etc. Eventually I found this depiction of Iron Fan from an opera performances of JTTW, "The Monkey King: Flaming Mountains" which was performed by the Sichuan Opera theater (I was unfortunately unable to find the name of the performer who plays Irom Fan specifically).

Her color palette (specifically the red-to-white ombre pants, bits of gold embroidery, and the tassels on her outfit) were inspired by this characters costume from the 1986 JTTW series. While I was drawing her I was under the impression that this was Princess Iron Fan as finding any information about this series and its characters/actors was surprisingly difficult, but upon looking further into the series (via wiki, which probably isn't the most reliable source) I found that this might actually be an entirely different character (though I can't find their name) which is a bit embarrassing 😔.

Her hair style and ornaments were all inspired by Princess Iron Fan's portrayal in the 2010 series who was portrayed by Liu Zi, with some obvious differences, such as her crown piece being the same design as in LMK.

Her cloud collar (or Yunjian/云肩) and the scarf around her arms (Pibo/披帛) are just a few small things I wanted to keep from her design in the show, though her Pibo is something she only had when she was still a part of the celestial realm/before she married DBK, I still wanted to include it.

my stp brainrot has combined with my casual interest in historical dress youtube and I decided to draw the Princess in a more historically-inspired outfit than her original design

If anyone's curious, her outfit/hairstyle is supposed to be from around 1828 ("around" bc my main reference/inspiration was definitely from 1828 but I had so many tabs open with different inspo images from nearby years and I don't remember which ones I actually used. also did you know it is surprisingly difficult to search for royal portraiture from a specific year) because based on some cursory googling, it seemed a lot of the elements of her canon base dress (off-the-shoulder, sweetheart neckline, poofy sleeves, straight waistline around the natural waist, skirt that isn't super full/poofy) seemed historically plausible for that time period

I also drew her hair in a more historically-accurate style for the period (but don't ask me exactly what's going on there because I'm not entirely sure myself) but I kept her canon tiara because it seemed plausible enough. anyway this was really fun to do!!!
