Ham-ha! Sorry for the long wait but here is the final installment of the Hamtaro goods I found during my last trip to Japan!
I made a post about the Hamtaro Turning Butt plushie just randomly showing up in crane game stores and I was so lucky that it released two days before I was flying home! The earlier post showed the crane game I won mine from, but I also found him at another arcade center in Akihabara seen here. FYI, the crane games with these wood plushie bottoms are impossible to win, since the prize will just keep bouncing around each time it falls. This machine was fully stocked each time I walked past it, so no one was winning it.
Tumblr media
Next up was Kiddy Land in Harajuku! The Hamtaro goods were on one of the higher floors shoved all the way in the back, it's had to ask a staff for help because I just couldn't find anything! A lot of it was stuff you could get at other stores (the Godzilla-hams are all over the place in Japan) but I was surprised to see so many playcharm plushies! I was having trouble finding these guys anywhere, I wish I had just stopped here my first day lol. I was sad to see there was only an Oxnard sticker left from the Kiddy Land Sleepover exclusive series, but I was happy to at least get something from it!
Tumblr media
I stopped at the Thank-You Mart nearby this Kiddy Land and was lucky to find some Hamtaro goods I was missing! The top two items are rolls of post-it note stickers, and then I'll found some rubber coasters and a nail file! I was super happy about the coasters.
Tumblr media
On our last day we headed back to Ikebukuro; I went in to double check my favorite K-Books and I found a Hamtaro section I missed previously. These are the paper coasters from the 2020 Hamtaro Cafe, you would get a random one for each drink item purchased. I originally wasn't going to collect the paper coasters, but I think I'm a bit insane now and collecting anything Hamtaro themed.
Tumblr media
And here is everything I bought together! I ran out of room in my suitcases so I had to cut open some of the bigger plushies. I fill them with better quality stuffing and sew them back up so not a problem!
Tumblr media
I'm still working on getting my Hamtaro room looking nice, it's taking a bit longer than I expected but hope to show it soon!!

Robot Raiders, Video Expo Arcade, 1982 World’s Fair, Knoxville, TN. "Eight waist-high robots dashing around a ring zapping each other with light beams to the beat of rock music at the 1982 World's Fair have added a new dimension to electronic games. But the game, which costs $1.50 to play for about two minutes, may be just the "horse and buggy" of robot wars of tomorrow, its developers say. The game, called Robot Raiders, is played much like a video arcade game, except the action involves real robots, operated by remote control, in an octagonal ring. The eight humans at the controls fight their mini-war to the beat of hard rock music. As the lights flash and the music pounds, the robots race around firing light beams from their outstretched arms. The object is to hit an opponent in a a panel that registers the shot and transmits it by radio frequency to a scoreboard. "The guy says 'Go.' and everybody kind of comes up with lasers blazing," said Joe Stewardson, a photographer who says he played the game several times at the fair in Knoxville, Tenn. The robots, which are about about 3 feet tall, are "kind of your traditional robot," he said. The control stick moves left, right, forward and backward "just like a fighter pilot's," he said. While the game is getting its first public exposure at the fair, the gnome-sized warriors have been in the works for years at Sound Spectrum, an Orange County manufacturer. "What we wanted to do is extend the game beyond the cathode ray tube and develop a game that not only appealed to young people. but also adults as well…” said Gary Taylor, the head of Sound Spectrum. Dan Laughlin, another owner of the exhibit, said the players can visually track their hits by watching the light, which shows up something like a flashlight on the robot. "There are lights flashing on the floor, above and around the robots," Laughlin said. The show includes black lights and music with different frequency sounds that come from each of the robots as they shoot. Laughlin said the players, using remote-control "joy sticks," move the robots in an 18-foot radius from control podiums on the corners of the octagon. "They are inside what is almost like a cockpit of a fighter plane," he said. "They have a console where the hits are recorded, with a button on top their joy stick to shoot. While the game is popular, the owners concede it is expensive. But,” says Kail, "If a kid wants to play, he's going to pay the money. A lot of them are off on summer vacation, and have summer jobs." It's more of a main attraction, not for the average video parlor, more for theme parks and major shopping centers," he said." – Robot Raiders involves real, remote control robots, by Dolores Wood, Santa Ana, CA.
"They paid a quarter million for the world's first robot arcade game. There were eight robots but they did not work. We spent the last two months of the Fair engineering and building new robots. We had a few completed by the time the Fair closed." – Doug Dotson.

Miami Vice gets better with each viewing as all Mann films do, that was great, super fun. More on that when it’s not close to 5 AM. It was part of a Risky Business double feature for me. First time seeing the Tom Cruise breakout role, and I enjoyed it. I did a tour of Grand Central (highly recommend), and walked around Lincoln Center. I had empanadas and coconut soda. One (1) beer at the Four Faced Liar, which I’m sad to say no longer has the Big Buck Hunter arcade game in the back, but remains one of those heimishe Irish dives that serves cheap beer and surrounds you with wood paneling.
And now I am crashing out at my folks’ place which I’m looking forward to because it’s the closest I get to having blackout curtains, and I may actually sleep eight hours.

Frontier completed a Western-themed casino expansion, Jun. 1982. Photos circa '82-84.
The main building was extended towards the Strip with a new Western-styled facade. A longhorn motif debuted over a new casino entrance and marquee sign. The design by Marnell Corrao Associates, with signs by Sign Systems Inc (SSI), represented a return to the Frontier's original Old West theme which had been abandoned as the Frontier modernized in the 50s-60s.
Details were described in the Las Vegas Review-Journal:
“The centerpiece of the new casino, which is twice the size as the old one, is a slot and video game area known as the Wild Horse Slot Saloon. The glittering arcade, embellished with wood-plank floors, lantern-like lighting fixtures and a crystal chandelier, has more than 200 new machines with an unusual configuration designed to make customers more comfortable ... The new casino includes a poker parlor and an entertainment lounge. The card room has "hold 'em" and Seven-Card Stud games. The 112-seat lounge features live bluegrass music in the afternoon and evening hours.
“Grand opening ceremonies were in front of the hotel's new east entrance, which opens directly onto the Strip. The exterior is highlighted by a 30-foot sign bearing the name of the hotel in illuminated letters set against a background of copper, brass, imported Italian marble and beveled, plated peach mirrors. A stylized longhorn steer. head with a horn-span of 28 feet is one of the building's most distinguishing features.
“A series of turn-of-the-century lamp posts, planters and brick pavers adorn the area in front of the east entrance. Other new facilities include an expanded showroom, new staff offices, showroom reservation office, computer center, tour and travel desk and PBX center.”
- Frontier Hotel Expansion Celebrated. Review-Journal, 6/24/82 p24.
The "Longhorn marquee" by SSI was seen in front of the hotel as late as Spring '88. It was relocated to the Frontier's rear driveway on S. Sammy Davis Jr Dr, where it remained on site for a few years after the Frontier close. It was moved to the Neon Museum in 2010. The casino facade was modified in later years.

History Must Repeat Itself - Chapter 2
Author's note: hey everyone, let me know if you're liking this! But also, I barely know how to use tumblr for anything other than reading so bear with me...
---
Before the school year started, I handed out minimum thirty resumes around Hawkins. I had to get a job. My mother's "great new jobs" only paid enough to cover bills and groceries. Mainly bills actually. The rest was my responsibility. I needed my own job if Madison and I wanted to do anything or needed to buy anything. I won't let Madison get a job until she was sixteen. I wanted her to be a kid.
On the drive to Palace Arcade, my sister and Max didn't stop talking. When their conversation shifted to a boy who went missing the school year before, I was finally included. Madison told me about the mysterious drama of Hawkins Middle School. This kid named Will Byers was thought to be dead, but he was found alive after a week. He was lost in the local woods. Barbara Holloway, a high school student, had died from toxins from the Hawkins Lab. Before Barbara's cause of death was announced, it freaked people out. They were thinking a serial killer was active in Hawkins. Of course there was no evidence, but it was a small town. That tended to be the first answer when people died.
"That's a lot for a small town," I commented, parking the car. I faced the girls, "my shift is three hours. Do you two need money?"
Max shook her head, but Madison looked at me with a guilty smile.
"Can I have five dollars? I'll pay you back when we get home. I forgot my wallet."
I rolled my eyes at my sister, handing her spare change out of the center console.
"How about adding it to the tab you've got open at the Bank of Jess?" I asked, winking. Max chuckled from the backseat. I wasn't stressing. I knew Madison would pay me back. Though the change I gave her was 'car change', which I hadn't counted in my regular finances.
Exiting the car, I looked up at the fluorescent sign, my insides knotting. My previous jobs were almost entirely in bookstores. It was a very different environment to what I was about to face. Opening the front door as it closed behind the girls, an overwhelming stench of sweat hit me. I paused, my hand squeezing the handle.
I wanted to leave.
Actually, I wanted to run out the door. The screaming was annoying me already, and I knew I'd have a headache by the end of a shift.
I approached the counter, a tall teenager stood behind it with his hand in a bag of popcorn. He looked out at the large arcade machines with a blank expression. I stopped in front of him, and his gaze snapped to me, not realizing I'd approached.
"I'm here for training," I told him, awkwardly, "I'm Jess."
The boy stuck his hand out, "I'm Keith, manager."
I wearily glanced at his butter-covered fingers, before quickly shaking his hand. Discreetly, I wiped my hand against my back pocket. Keith stuck his tongue against his back teeth, giving me a once over. I tapped the toe of my Chucks against the tiled floor, uncomfortable under his gaze. Keith nodded, reaching under the counter and pulled out a form.
"Fill this out. What shirt size are you? X-Large?"
My jaw tightened, "I prefer a medium, actually."
Keith looked at me again and snorted, "alright."
I definitely wasn't making it to a second shift if this is who I was working for. I was curvy, having a larger than average chest. Like the one I wore under my flannel currently, my oversized shirts hid the thinner waist I had. I pushed the sleeves up, annoyed a random stranger pointed out my size to me.
Keith came out of the 'Employees Only' room and tossed the shirt onto the counter, "you can change in the washroom. We'll do your training after that."
Letting the door to the washroom shut behind me, I closed my eyes taking a deep breath. After accepting this job, I was asked to interview at a bookstore closer to home. I'd thought this might be a fun job, somewhere Madison could hang out with her friends.
I'd call them before school tomorrow morning, praying they hadn't hired someone. I held the navy blue shirt up to the yellowing light. It wasn't bad quality. I'd wash this shirt a dozen times to get the greasy smell out and use it as a sleeping shirt.
After changing, I looked in the cracked mirror. Maybe I should've accepted a larger size. It was tighter than I expected. My chest was very obvious, but that wasn't anything new. I considered wearing the flannel over top but I had a feeling Keith would notice and feel like it was a victory. Knowing I had to stick it out for three hours without complaint, I tugged my hair up into a ponytail and walked back out to the front counter. I mustered up all the power that Joan Jett gave me as I stopped across from Keith. The manager who looked a few years older turned from his spot and straightened. His mouth fell open a little as he looked over me once again.
"What do I need to know?" I dryly asked, dropping my clothes and placing my hands on the counter.
It took Keith a moment to process what I asked before muttering out, "um, okay."
The training wasn't hard. Honestly, it wasn't really training at all. I'd used a register for years and in the two months since my last job, there weren't major updates that reinvented the entire machine. If the gaming console went out, turn it off and back on. If that didn't fix it, write an 'Out Of Order' sign and note it in a book. Kids went to the kitchen counter for food, which had nothing to do with me. If anyone vomits, I clean it. That's it. That's all I was instructed to do.
Deeming I knew enough to be here alone, Keith left me to go on his lunch. I pulled out one of the comic books sitting under the counter and began thumbing through it, occasionally looking up at the children. I was already getting a headache above my eyebrow.
"Hey stranger, didn't expect to see you here."
I raised my head, smiling at the familiar face. Robin leaned across from me. She looked over her shoulder at the kids standing at the tall machines of flashing lights.
"Y'know this place was a lot more magical when I was a kid. Now it's just," Robin stopped talking, scrunching her nose as she looked at me.
I snorted, "smelly? Yeah, I know. I'm going to have a three hour shower when I get home."
"At least you look good in the uniform. It fits you, um, nicely."
Robin became flustered at the compliment. I smiled at her, recognizing the look in her eyes when she realized the tone of her compliment.
"Thanks, I'm surprised by the fabric. It's nicer than I expected."
The blush settled on Robin's cheeks, and she recovered by throwing her backpack onto the counter. Opening a notebook, Robin took out the assignment outline. We discussed which classic adventure novel we wanted to analyze with such detail to the point our brains went numb for the next month. The longer we spoke, the more thankful I was to be partnered with Robin. She was scatterbrained, but smarter than most people I'd run into at Hawkins high.
It didn't take long for us to decide on 'Beau Geste', knowing it would be overlooked by everyone else. We chatted for a bit, Robin continuing to tell me things I needed to know to survive Hawkins High.
"I don't know how you park next to Billy Hargrove," Robin said, "I would feel so tense all the time."
I shrugged, "it's not that bad. He's a horrendous flirt and a total dick, but he's nice when we're alone."
"And how often are you alone?" Robin asked, wagging her eyebrows.
I rolled my eyes, "our sisters are friends. It's nothing more than that."
Robin's lips curled into a smile, "we'll see about that."
Robin stepped back as three kids rushed up, asking for more tokens. I did the most work so far and looked back at Robin. She gave them a grossed out expression as they rushed away.
"No offence, but the smell of this place is making me sick. I'm going home," Robin smiled at me and with a brief exchange, she left the store.
I didn't have time to look back down at the tattered comic book when another voice approached me.
"Oh my god, I thought you were going to be wearing a tacky vest. This is so much better. I wish I had a camera."
Resting my head on my palm, I looked up at my sister. I loudly sighed, straightening.
"You're going to make every teenage boy that comes in here get a boner," she commented, resting her elbows on the counter. I rolled my eyes at her.
"Wow," Max said, coming up beside Madison, "I see why my brother doesn't leave you alone."
"I'm sorry, Billy Hargrove talks to you? When? Why didn't you tell me?" Madison asked, shocked. She looked at Max, "I'm sorry, but every girl at both schools thinks your brother is so hot."
Max made face of disgust, shrugging, "somethings don't change between California and Indiana unfortunately."
I laughed at Max's acceptance before turning to my sister. Her eyes were wide and sparkling with interest. I hated that Billy Hargrove was the one to pique her interest in my love life. She wasn't this bad in Seattle when the football captain gave me a ball from the championship game. As sweet as the gesture seemed, he was super creepy and wouldn't leave me alone. When he broke into our house, we moved to Hawkins a month later. I'm not sure if the two things were completely unrelated.
I turned to Max, shaking my head, then back to Madison.
"Billy thinks the chase is fun. He hasn't taken the hint, even though I've rejected him multiple times. I'm pretty sure that's why he talks to me," I explained to my sister, "Billy has lots of girls waiting for his attention. Don't worry, I'm not becoming your sister-in-law any time soon."
Madison rolls her eyes, looking into the arcade. Max was smiling at me, however.
"I'm so glad a female has interacted with my brother and not let him into her pants. Must have given him a reality check."
I winked at her as the arcade's door opened. Four middle school boys walked in, vibrantly chatting. Upon seeing me behind the counter, they fell silent, and shuffled over quickly.
"You're not Keith," a boy with incredibly chubby cheeks and curly hair sticking out from under a baseball hat stated. His three friends looked at me too, their mouths set in shock. I snuck a glance at the girls before looking back at him.
"What gave it away? Was it the hair?" I said, smirking at him. The boy's head jolted backwards, shocked from the attitude in my response.
"Oh, hey Max, Madison. What're you doing here?" another boy asked, his dark eyes not leaving Max's face. He ran his hand across his coarse hair. I subdued a smirk, looking down at the counter. Boys were hilariously obvious when it came to their crushes. Madison pointed at me.
"That's my sister, Jess."
The curly haired boy and the taller lanky boy in the back, his long black hair that seemed to flop on his head moved their attention between Madison and me. The other boy still looking at Max through the corner of his eye, trying not to be obvious. The fourth boy with hair similar to the tallest but much lighter, stood at the back, looking uncomfortable. I instinctively wanted to wrap my arms around him and hide him from all evil.
"I'm in the dark here," I said, swinging my pointer finger across the group, "who are you?"
The speaker of the group grinned, "I'm Dustin. That's Will, Mike, and Lucas. I hold the record on two games here. I plan on making it three this year."
I nodded, giving them a wave, enjoying the awkward ones they gave me in return.
"Oh, you're the Jess that Nancy was talking about. I thought she was making up a new friend. I assumed she spends way too much time with Harrington to have any friends," the darkest haired boy, Mike said.
I sputtered a laugh, "I guess Nancy is your sister?"
Mike made a face, "unfortunately."
I smirked at him, turning to Dustin.
"Since you have so many records, I guess I'll ask you for help while Keith is away."
In the weird lighting of the arcade, I could see Dustin blush. Mike dramatically rolled his eyes before waving at me before dragging Dustin by the back of his shirt into the depths of the arcade.
"Well, aren't they adorable," I said, leaning against the counter. Max turned towards me, no longer watching after the boys with a small smile on her face. Madison sent a knowing face at Max.
The door to the arcade flung opened again, Keith entered with a huge take-out cup. His gaze swept across the arcade, nodding his head. He barely looked down at the girls when he stopped beside me.
"Cool, you can leave. Come back in two days to get your schedule."
I nodded at Keith, keeping the look of relief off my face. I tossed the comic book under the counter and grabbed my shirts. I muttered, "thanks" and walked from behind the counter. I looked down at the girls.
"Are you two ready to go?" I hoped they heard the plea in my voice.
Both Madison and Max nodded, glancing at Keith as we left the busy arcade.
Once in the car, I let out a groan of frustration, taking my hair out of the ponytail. The disgusting smell of the arcade was seeped into my shirt. I considered just burning it instead of trying to wash the smell away.
"You're quitting, aren't you?" Madison said, as I shifted the car into reverse.
I chuckled, glancing at my sister, "how could you tell?"
"I don't see you working anywhere with fluorescent lights. You don't really have that aesthetic."
She and Max started giggling from the backseat. After checking the girls didn't need anything else, Max instructed me on how to get to her house. The neighbourhood Max lived in was pretty, like most of the houses in Hawkins. Their house was one floor unlike ours but it probably similar in cost. It was close enough that I'd happily pick Max up if Billy wasn't in the mood. From what Max told me during the ride, he usually wasn't.
Max thanked me before getting out of the car. As she ran to the front door, Billy stood on the other side. With his hand still on the door handle, Billy stepped out of the house tentatively. I tapped my fingers against the steering wheel, matching his stare.
"Oh my gosh, please go talk to him. He's so hot," Madison whispered aggressively as she climbed over the seats. I rolled my eyes at her and unbuckled my seatbelt. I walked across the road, meeting him half up his driveway. Billy crossed his arms over his chest, and though instinct told me to match his posture, I put my hands in my back pocket.
"How was your first day of work?" Billy asked, a smirk on his face. My eyes snapped up to his. The tone in his voice was new. He was friendly, no underlying suggestion. It was even a little different than how he spoke to me at our cars in the mornings.
I rolled my eyes, "absolutely horrible. I'm never going back."
Billy chuckled, shaking his hair off his shoulders. His eyes rested on my torso, a genuine smile cracking on his face.
"You got a free shirt out of it, it looks like."
I pulled on the fabric, looking down. Smirking, I let the fabric bounce back into place.
"It's my dream shirt, honestly. I don't think I'm ever going to take it off," I said with fake enthusiasm, "the smell is so authentic too."
Curiously, Billy leaned forward and took a sniff at my shoulder. As he pulled back, he had the same expression I had walking into the arcade.
"That's rough," he said, "at least you smell better. Wear the shirt long enough and you won't be able to smell the sweat and burnt popcorn."
My heart thumped in my chest at Billy so close to me. I cursed myself, at the other feelings rushing through my body. His eyes lightened as he looked down at me, smiling.
"Thank you, I think."
Billy chuckled, scratching his head, "thanks for bringing Max home in one piece. My dad wasn't impressed when I showed up without the kid."
A dark expression blew over his face, resorting to an almost bashful look. I nodded my head, ignoring my curiosity.
"No problem, Max is a sweetheart. I'm glad my sister and her found friends at a new school so quickly. It's not an easy thing to do," I said, glancing at my feet.
"You sound like you've got experience."
I shrugged, "Hawkins high is my eighth school. I've gone through many different friends and scenarios."
Billy jutted out his lower lip, "damn. That sucks."
I nodded my head, feeling like the conversation was dwindling. I opened my mouth to say goodbye, but Billy beat me to it.
"I hope dropping Max off wasn't out of your way."
I shook my head, telling Billy where we lived in comparison to them, "not very far. Anyways, I'll see you tomorrow at school."
I awkwardly waved and tried to calmly walk back to my car. Getting in the driver's seat, I did my best not to look over. Turning the key, I broke. Billy stood in the open doorway, arm resting on the door and watching with a smirk on his face.
"He watched your butt the whole way back to the car," Madison said from beside me, amused.
I looked forward, my stupid cheeks heating up as I pulled away from the curb. Driving back home, I thought about the short conversation between Billy and me. He was different than he was at school. He was actually sweet. I knew better than to expect this behaviour tomorrow. Billy was the type to keep up his persona. I'd met many teenager just like him. It didn't mean my heart kept at a normal pace when Billy got close with his stupid blue eyes and all his attention focused on me.
Pushing open the front door to our duplex, Madison tossed her backpack aimlessly into the living room. I rolled my eyes, putting mine gently on the stairs. Madison called for our mother throughout the house, but I knew she wouldn't be here. I might see her before bed, if I stayed up late enough.
"Maddy, grab your homework and you can start while I make dinner."
"I don't think I want to be called Maddy anymore," my sister commented, dropping her backpack onto the table, "there's this bitchy girl at school named Maddy and I don't want to associate or get mixed up."
I paused washing the vegetables to look at my sister. She leaned back in the chair, looking at her hands before meeting my gaze.
I nodded, pushing out my lips, "okay, that's fine. Do you want me to write your teachers a note to let them know?"
"No, I'll let them know. If they don't remember, then a note would be good."
"Okay," I nodded, "now, what homework do you have this evening, Madison?" I asked, seriously.
My younger sister rolled her eyes at me, "it's just math stuff. It's pretty easy."
"Well, when you get annoyed, come take your anger out on some carrots. I'm going to add them to the salad."
Madison giggled, pulling out her binder. We fell into a familiar silence. My headache from the arcade was gone, but in its place was a familiar buzzing at the base of my skull. No pain killers would get rid of it, I'd tried. I was so used to this weird headache that I was able to ignore it.

You and I Could Paint the Sky Together
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This little drabble was inspired by these pictures when I first saw them. I'm just getting around to writing this now.
Also posted to AO3
***
The sky is azure blue behind a swath of clouds that hang so low in the sky I feel as if I can reach out and touch them. The heat of the day is behind us, making way for a soft breeze that blows in from the east, delicately tousling Nancy’s hair with each gentle gust. I smile knowingly as she huffs next to me, using the hand that isn’t holding mine to put her curls back in place. Luckily for her, we’re headed into the woods where the wind will be tamped by the trees and the sun will almost cease to exist under the canopy of trees.
I hike my bag up a little higher on my shoulders as we get lost among the trees, not stopping until we’ve hit our favorite spot almost dead center. Nancy, still swiping at her hair – a pavlovian effect setting in – stops at the picnic bench we’ve claimed as ours and sits. Giving her hair one final swipe, she sits down and smiles at me. I’m not sure if it’s possible to feel everything at once, but that’s what it feels like when Nancy smiles at me. That every emotion is fighting to get out.
“I’ll rest while you set up,” she says sleepily.
We started the day early. Up at dawn to watch the sunrise together, Nancy’s preferred time of day. She likes to be awake before anyone else, reveling in the silence of the world as the sun climbs in the sky. After that, I made her breakfast. My specialty and Nancy’s favorite, French toast and scrambled eggs.
We went to the arcade and played games like we were children again, then saw a movie that made Nancy cry.
She doesn’t realize it yet, but it’s her day. One that I hope is a happy, core memory for years to come. My heart beats against my chest thinking about how perfect this needs to be.
I unload my gear: tripod, camera and external flash and get set up. While Nancy thinks this is just one of my impromptu photo shoots, it’s so much more than that. Everything has to be perfect. Once I’m sure my gear is where it needs to be, I move toward Nancy who is not sitting cross-legged on the picnic table bench.
“Ready?” I murmur.
“Always,” Nancy says.
I gather her hands in mine and help her from the picnic table, trying to focus on anything but my heart beating in my ears like a bass drum. She stands in a way that makes her look like she is floating, like an ethereal being that I am just lucky enough to have in my life.
I love her so much that it makes me ache.My hands go numb, with nerves or emotions, I’m not sure. I just know that every nerve ending in my body is alive and well, tormenting me to get on with it already.
“Stand right here,” I instruct, setting my hands on Nancy’s shoulders as though she might float away if I let her go.
I move to my camera, setting it to work with the shutter button I’m holding and move over to my bag to grab the only props I’m going to need today. As Nancy stands with her back to me, I shove the small box into my pocket and hide the sign at my side. I run over to her quickly, pressing my back against hers as we fall right into step with the camera. She’s smiling, I’m smiling and then I hold up the sign right before the shot fires.
“She doesn’t know I’m going to propose.”
We take a few more shots like that, I can barely hear her laugh as a branch crunches under her foot. My heart is beating so hard. I’m breathing heavily, despite doing hardly anything and I know it’s time. I can’t stand what my body is doing to me anymore.
“Now face me,” I finally tell her, holding the sign at eye level with one hand and the shutter button in the other hand, firing off shots at a rapid pace as she turns to face me. She looks at the sign, squints a little and then her eyes pop open and I know, she’s read the sign.
I take another shot just before I drop the sign, reach into my pocket, pull out a small velvet box and drop down on my knee.
“Nancy,” I say as she gasps and covers her mouth. I can see tears welling up behind those beautiful blue eyes and I can feel some pricking my own. “The years with you have felt like weeks. The days with you, like minutes. I feel like there’s never enough time to express how much I love you but I hope I was able to convey that in our day today. You deserve the world and I want to give it to you. Will you marry me?”
She nods, a small, unintelligible sound coming from her mouth as she continues to move her head up and down at a rapid pace.
“Yes,” she squeaks. “Yes!”
“Yeah?”
She nods again.
“Yeah.”
Her tears are coming in full force now, gentle sobs that make her body shake. I take her trembling hand and steady it as I slip the ring on her finger. It’s not much, but it’s what I could do and I can tell she loves it just by the way she’s looking at it. Like she’s never seen anything so beautiful in her life.
I’m still down on my knee when she motions for me to stand, letting out a small laugh as I realize I haven’t stood yet. I hop up and wrap her in my arms, finally letting go of the tears that’d been threatening to spill out.
“I love you,” she murmurs into my neck, her lips brushing the skin so that I can feel each word.
“I love you too,” I mutter back.
With our chests crushed together, I can feel her heart beating just as hard as mine. They beat against each other, a battle for control that neither of us are winning.
And then, Nancy’s jumping into my arms, the now empty velvet box goes flying to the forest floor as I catch her. She wraps her legs around my waist and plants herself there.
“Can we stay like this forever?” she asks, a slight lilt to her voice that tells me she’s still crying.
“If I could hold you that long, we could,” I reply. “We still need to get some after pictures. I dropped the shutter release button.”
With that, Nancy climbs down from my body and looks to the ground, plucking the black device from a pile of leaves and handing it to me.
“Ready when you are,” she says, eyes rimmed in red, cheeks flushed and her breath coming in jagged rasps.
“When it comes to you, I’m always ready.”
Nancy’s eyebrows shoot up.
“Not like that!” I laugh. “But I could argue that is true, as well.”
Nancy laughs with me, pulling me in for a hug as I press the shutter release button.

Ten First Lines Challenge
Rules: Share the first line of your last ten published works or as many as you are able to and see if there are any patterns.
Thanks for tagging me, @chicgeekgirl89! Sorry for taking so long to respond.
1. The One Where It’s Twins Kensi rubbed her hand over her lower abdomen, over the slight bump there. It had appeared at 11 weeks and grown a tiny bit each week.
2. The Other Shoe, Part 11 Kensi came home that evening while Deeks was still in the backyard spreading wood chips, thanks to an unusual burst of energy.
3. Another Us, Part 4 “Woah, all I want to do is talk to him,” Neal said, keeping his hands visible, but not going so far as to raise them.
4. An Error in Judgement, Part 6 When they arrived back at the boat shed, Callen, Kensi, and Rountree were grouped around the main table, on a call with Eric.
5. An Error in Judgment, Part 5 “Sam, I swear it’s fine,” Deeks sighed, reluctantly following Sam past the bullpen.
6. The Agent and the Fireman, Part 9 After grabbing a few hours of sleep at home, everyone returned to OSP to debrief and attempt to track down the man who attacked Deeks.
7. When You See the Real Me Eric doesn’t have the same strong negative reaction to Detective Marty Deeks as the rest of the team.
8. Blame it on the Hormones Kensi wandered through the house, hand placed low on her stomach as she searched for Deeks.
9. An Error in Judgment, Part 4 Hour two into their surveillance, and Deeks had started to get a little antsy.
10. It’s All Fun and Games “Wow, you take me such romantic places,” Kensi drawled as Deeks pulled into the parking lot of the “Family Fun Center”, which boasted an arcade, bumper cars, cafe, batting cages, and a full mini golf course.
Well, as usual I like to start my fics with a line of dialogue, usually mid-conversation, from a main character or with a main character in action/thought.
Tagging @wanna-be-bold and @bluenet13.

Note
Do you know those early 2000s to mid 2010s shows with 26 episodes per season and full of filler eps where one of the characters like, learns to play soccer or whatever, just for that to never be brought up again for the whole of the show?
If stranger things was one of those shows, what filler episodes would you write?
(originally sent this to foodiewithdahoodie but it was so great I'd love to see more answers now)
hiiii omg i love this question. here are my thoughts:
i have to say a beach episode. for sure. always gotta have one. bonus points if, like, canonically we are in the middle of the winter during the show and the characters somehow end up??? at a beach??? but we can let it slide because we get to see mike having Gay Panic over will being shirtless LMAO
literally el learning to do anything. maybe she goes on an adventure in the woods and learns about the animals and bugs and plants. maybe she learns how to cook (even if the final product is objectively horrible). or maybe she learns how to like. sing or something. idk just something like that
okay because i'm a singer myself i NEED a musical episode. sorry not sorry. there is literally NO need for it at ALL but maybe all of the characters are participating in the school musical or maybe they're all putting on some choral performance and anyways we get a random musical episode with choreography and everything. would it be very weird and out of place? yes. would i eat that shit up? absolutely yes. and then it's never mentioned again. obviously.
for more Gay we could have an episode where mike and will are planning to go to a party or something with all of their friends but then all of them are busy, so it ends up being just the two of them (forced proximity my beloved) and they talk and almost kiss maybe. but then they get interrupted. but they also have a lot of fun at whatever event they go to (maybe it's a dance)
LUMAX FIRST DATE. PLEASE. it takes place a few weeks after the snowball and lucas takes her to the arcade. they have a lot of fun and we get them holding hands and being silly and max being HAPPY god please
adding onto this, we could also get an episode centering around one of the times max dumped lucas and how he won her back. it's very cute and sweet.
this is the last one i promise -- an episode centering around the wheeler family and how Dysfunctional they really are. maybe we could get some wheeler siblings bonding moments (mike and holly actually !! interacting !!) but it's also an exploration into how ted and karen's failing marriage affects the kids. it deepens the audience's understanding of mike' s character but then is never mentioned again LMAO

Concept Art by Ryan Church, The Mandalorian, Season 2, Episode 4, The Siege
Grogu liked to pretend, when he was someplace like Nevarro City, that he was time traveling. He didn’t actually think that time travel was possible. But he did like pretending that a place that had been so forgotten and ravaged by the Empire, once had days when people were happy, everything looked brand new, and it was safe to just walk down the street and talk with your friends, the local vendors, and your neighbors.
He could imagine the children running up and down the streets playing their games. Spill the Pins, Hide and Peek, Snag It, Bag It, Tag It, and so many others. Their grandparents and aunts and uncles would be watchings and laughing, especially at SIBITI.
It was a very silly game. You would find something worthless to snag or take, like a stone, or a piece of wood, or even a piece of trash. Then you would put it in a bag, because you were going to give to someone. And finally you had to come up with a few funny words to write on a tag. Like ‘Rock that fell out of Ian’s head’ and you’d give it Ian so he would get his stuff back.
The people who worked all enjoyed their work and their bosses were great people who were honored to help their people do their best and make things that everyone else wanted, remembering that they also wanted nice things. When Grogu was pretending to time travel it was important to him that people were good to each other and no one did without. No one was hungry, lonely, or lost. He’d spent too much of his life feeling those things and he never wanted anyone else to feel that way.
One of the things he enjoyed the most about his pretend time travel was imagining the city as everyone who lived there really wanted it to be. Trees that were tall and provided shade, but who’s leaves fell off in neat bundles that didn’t make a mess, but did make a great pile for jumping into. The walkways were wide and even and made it easy for everyone walk around, even the kid using the crutches because they had gotten a little too into Spill the Pins.
If you walked down the streets with him, people would be waving at you and greeting you like you were their long lost best friend. You would do the same because it felt good to be some place you were accepted for who you were and you didn’t have to change anything about yourself, because you were good enough just as you were.
Eventually you would arrive at the center of town and you would find the coolest building that was a park that was also a building. There were places to sit and just chat with people. There were swings, an open air theater, a water play area, gardens, arcades with all sorts of artworks, and music that was being played wherever a few people decided to meet.
Around the perimeter of the park were food stalls and other market stalls. Need new coveralls? They have you covered, literally. Need a tool? They even have a box you can use to move it around in. Need a gift for a friend you just made? Of course there is something for you and them because SIBITI worked so well, people always got things they liked. It was so nice.
Grogu explained this to his dad, the Mandalorian. Din Djarin agreed that it sounded very nice, but in Grogu’s pretend future or past city, no one would need bounty hunters. What kind of work would the Mandalorian do?
Grogu began to giggle.
“Buddy, what’s so funny? Tell me in your pretend time I’m not a waiter.”
Grogu shook his head. Of course his dad wouldn’t be a server. He’d step on folks toes. He’d mix up their orders. He’d get lost in the kitchen. He wouldn’t actually want to serve them things that weren’t good for them. Grogu’s time travel city, town, what have you, was a happy place. Din Djarin couldn’t be a waiter there and be happy, so nope. Not a waiter.
He thought for a moment and then explained to his dad what he thought would be ideal.
“An actor? Why do you think I would make a good actor, in any time? I wear a helmet all the time. People can’t see my face. They can only hear my voice and watch me move. And even my voice is muffled by the helmet.”
Grogu nodded his head at everything his dad said and then he explained that Mandalorians were ideal actors. They could play any role. They were really good at memorizing their lines, because that was like knowing the Creed back and forth and upside down. They knew how to get and hold people’s attention. They also knew how to tell a story. After all, Din had told all those people that he could ‘bring them in warm or bring them in cold’ when clearly he only ever brought them in cold. But they always believed him. It was perfect.
“Okay buddy, when you have the ability to travel in time, you can bring me to your city and I will take up acting. But what are you going to do? If we don’t need bounty hunters, we won’t need Jedi either.”
Grogu giggled and answered his dad.
“A writer? Why do you get to be the writer? I’m the one who keeps a journal.”
Grogu shook his head. Hadn’t he just shared a story with his dad? That’s what writers do, just in a way that more than one person could enjoy it. It was an ideal job for Grogu. He just wanted people to be happy.

Resort-Style Amenities
When it comes to luxury living, Katy Legacy has you covered with three and four-bedroom layouts designed for your comfort. Imagine having a resort-style pool right at your doorstep – perfect for relaxing or socializing with friends. If staying active is important to you, the state-of-the-art fitness center has everything you need to keep up with your workout routine. The community offers more than just a place to live, it’s a lifestyle. If you’re looking for affordable 4-bedroom homes Katy area, Katy Legacy combines comfort, luxury, and convenient amenities to make everyday living enjoyable. Whether you’re unwinding by the pool or getting a workout in, this community has something for everyone.
The Transportation System in Katy, Texas
Katy’s transportation system is pretty straightforward and user-friendly. It’s a car-dependent city, meaning most people drive to get around, but the road networks are well-maintained, so you won’t get stuck in traffic for too long. The major highways like I-10 and the Grand Parkway make it easy to get to Houston or other nearby areas. Public transportation options are limited, though, so if you’re not driving, your best bet is relying on rideshare services. Katy’s location also makes it convenient for quick access to Houston’s airports, should you need to travel. All in all, getting around Katy is a breeze as long as you have a vehicle.
Andretti Indoor Karting & Games Katy in Katy, TX
If you're looking for some action, Andretti Indoor Karting & Games in Katy has you covered. It’s not just about go-karts here, though those are a ton of fun! You can race your friends on their high-speed tracks and feel the adrenaline. But there’s also plenty of other stuff to do, like arcade games, laser tag, and mini bowling. Whether you’re with friends or family, there’s something for everyone. The place is super fun, with a lively atmosphere that’ll make you want to come back for more. After all that excitement, you can grab a bite to eat at their on-site restaurant, making it a full day of fun and food. It’s definitely worth checking out if you’re in Katy and looking for an adventure.
Target Opens Larger Store Concept in Katy
It’s cool to see Target bringing a larger, more sustainable store concept to Katy. The extra space means more products, which is always a win for shoppers who enjoy variety. Plus, the design changes, like the Texas-shaped succulent garden and regionally sourced wood, give the store a unique, local touch that’s a nice change from the usual. The addition of solar panels and EV charging stations also shows they’re thinking ahead, keeping sustainability in mind. It’s interesting that they used virtual reality to test the layout before building, which makes sense in today’s tech-driven world. If you’re someone who values convenience and eco-friendly design, this store sounds like a great spot to check out. It seems like Target is really stepping up its game in both size and sustainability.
