Went for a haircut and on the way out of the shopping mall, I noticed that Old Chang Kee (老曾记) had this new limited time Cheezy Chicken Bolognese Xmas'O (S$2.20) puff on sale. Got the puff, a stick each of the Gyoza and Crab Nugget to share with mum. The Christmas tree puff is not the pastel green as advertised but more “dirty” yellowish green in colour. :D Inside, you get a very moist filling of classic Italian meat-based sauce in a not buttery enough pastry. Hmm…, I should just stick to their popular curry puff the next time.

I’ve been watching J. Kenji Lopez-Alt journey through Seattle on YouTube trying all the teriyaki spots, and why am I not surprised that I had a huge craving for chicken teriyaki.
The chicken teriyaki and gyoza combo, just as my man kenji would order. The gyoza sauce is soy sauce and a hint of jangajji brine which is a Korean pickle containing jalapeños, radish and onions, and a dash of gochugaru. The salad dressing is a miso mayo based dressing that’s been watered down a little bit to lower its viscosity.
It’s a very untraditional teriyaki as I didn’t actually use a teriyaki marinade, I used my bulgogi asada marinade and just cooked my marinated chicken thighs on the plancha, it’s the closest I can get to an actual grill in my living arrangement. The marinade had enough sugar to caramelize on the meat and leave those nice little charred bits

Went to Oishi Japanese Kitchen for dinner last night. First time there. I got their chicken gyoza as an appetizer. They were really crunchy. They gave me an extra gyoza because they thought they overcooked/fried it. I don’t mind them this way, though. I gave the extra one to my parent. They didn’t give me very much of the dipping sauce. I got their hamberg steak. It comes with miso soup, rice, and apparently a salad. The miso soup wasn’t very good. I haven’t liked the miso soup in any Japanese restaurant I’ve been to. The salad wasn’t mentioned on the menu, but it was good. Nice dressing. I thought the hamberg steak would be more like the Salisbury steak my mom used to make. (From what I’ve read about it and seen.) However, theirs seemed more like a meatloaf with a ketchup based sauce. My mom used ketchup on her meatloafs, too. So it still was something similar. It was good. So good I had it all, most of the salad, most of the rice, barely any of the miso soup, and half of the gyoza. If I go there again, I want to try their ramen and tuna salad or salmon rice balls. They sound good.
