I Forgot How We Used To Be
So, uh, mentions of DADT. I’m sorry y’all this will be angsty as shit. But also really fluffy.
~~~
Tony and Rhodey’s first kiss was the cheesiest thing in the world. It was in their dorm room. Tony heard they were playing broadcasting “Back to the Future” on a cable channel so he bought on impulse a TV, a popcorn machine and enough couches for a theater room, and set it all up in their home. When Rhodey came back home, he found a smiling Tony sitting on the seats, mentioning for Rhodey to sit next to him. Rhodey wanted to protest, tell Tony Rhodey didn’t need him to buy expensive things. Instead, he gave in and sat next to his friend.
They flirted whenever they got the chance, their hands bumped into each other as they reach for the popcorn, they both leaned into each other unconsciously, but the height of it all is when Rhodey stretched and yawned and his arm fell around Tony’s shoulders. Rhodey froze, realizing what happened.
But Tony only snorted. “That was cheesy as fuck,” he said but leaned into Rhodey’s side.
“You love it,” Rhodey smirked.
Tony looked up from Rhodey’s shoulder, “I do.”
And they kissed because it was inevitable.
And it was incredible.
~~~
Their first kiss wasn’t the only cheesy thing. They just were cheesy.
They were the kind of couple that gave each other good morning kisses and brought each other flowers when they saw that there were some on sale and that kind of couple that kissed the hand intertwined with theirs and that kind of couple that had elaborate or sweet pet names for one another or and that kind of couple that flirted shamelessly and that kind of couple that snuck into anywhere just to make out and that kind of couple that had their a code for when they wanted to talk privately in public and that kind of couple where the family of your significant other adopts you that kind of couple that used Polaroid instant camera and kept all the pictures in a secret box and they were that kind of couple that told each other “I love you” every chance they got. They were that kind of couple that loved each other and showed it every chance they got.
They were also that kind of couple that had to hide their relationship away from the paparazzi so Rhodey could be drafted. They were that kind of couple that shared “a kiss for good luck?” when Tony said goodbye to Rhodey at the train station. They were that kind of couple that had letters written and read and left at home to find, to be opened for any occasion under the sun that meant "for when you miss me". They were that kind of couple that sent and received care packages filled with flowers and love letters, for when they thought the gestures were needed. They were that kind of couple that a little distance didn’t affect. Their love went on for miles.
It didn’t last forever.
~~~
The day DADT was up for passing, Rhodey asked for a one day leave. He and Tony cuddled up in front of the news and willed the law not to pass, knowing it will change everything. Logically they both knew it would be an improvement; Rhodey could serve and he wouldn’t be asked. But there was a sickening feeling in their stomach that told them it was wrong.
When the law was passed neither of them looked at the screen. They didn’t look at each other either.
~~~
The policy somehow made it worse. Suddenly everyone became a suspect, no one could assume that there weren’t any gays in the military. The packages and letters stopped coming, Rhodey too afraid of anyone discovering he was gay. Their calls, those in public, sounded to everyone listening like they were just friends. Rhodey wasn’t asked, but the harassment came in different forms.
Tony hated it only a little less than Rhodey.
It wasn’t easy; as Rhodey rose in the ranks and became the liaison for SI they had to hide more often. As Tony and Rhodey got more friends that they trusted; Pepper, Happy, Maria, and Carol only knew them as subtle. As Tony got more attention, Rhodey and Tony never even got to touch in public. As Rhodey once said “I’m glad that we hid this since the beginning or I would be out of a job” they both felt conflicted at the fight that followed. As Tony disappeared, Rhodey searched tirelessly for him and was mocked with the rhetorical question “what, are you in love with him or something?”; Rhodey wanted to scream but instead, he calmly responded, “sir, to my understating that is the Don’t Ask part of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” It was hard and frustrating and Tony just wanted to buy out the government with all of his money as long as the law got repealed.
And then it did.
~~~
Old habits die hard, however. They weren’t used to suddenly being able to be affectionate. They used to do it all the time before, with no distance and no suspicion. But now, 22 years later... they got used to being watched. It took a while before they got back to how they used to be.
The first spet it was when Tony texted him. They never texted before. Not like that at least. It was always professional and strained, and although they both wanted to write something sweeter, they never did, they never could.
And then Tony did it.
It was Rhodey’s first business trip since DADT was repealed, the first time they spent time apart after DADT was repealed. Tony woke up aching for Rhodey. And so he reached for his phone, searching for Rhodey and wrote up a text... before freezing, remembering. He nearly turned off his phone before he remembered again, this time the good news, and then he hesitantly pressed send.
“Good morning, honey ❤️”
Tony waited nervously for a response, half preparing for when he would be asked to hack into SMS and delete the text. Instead what he got back was,
“Good morning, baby ❤️”
~~~
More habits started to come back slowly.
~~~
The first time they kissed in front of their friends, they were shocked.
“Oh my God,” Pepper said, “did you just kiss?”
“Yeah,” Tony smirked, quite proud of himself, “any problem with that?”
“No, it’s just... I never saw you two kiss.”
Rhodey frowned, “was that some fantasy of yours?”
Happy fought off a smile.
“I’m just surprised that’s all,” Pepper bristled, “you never kiss.”
“Well, now we can, so,” and Tony took Rhodey’s hand.
~~~
Date night was returned rather dully. It started like any other “guys night out” evening they had. They just went out to some bar, drank some beers, played some billiard, and ate some junk food off the menu. But then Tony held his hand under the table, and suddenly it was different.
From then on, they held hands under tables and kissed good night when they got back home every Thursday.
~~~
For their anniversary, Tony arranged for them to go on a vacation together, and they spent it with Rhodey taking over for Tony’s spectacular failure at cooking dinner, and then later after an amazing dinner, gifts were exchanged. Tony got him a photo album of all their old photos.
“I thought you told me you burned them all,” Rhodey looked bewildered.
Tony winced, “couldn’t do that. I hid them really well though. Forgive me?”
Rhodey shook his head, “it’s ok. I’m glad you didn’t destroy them.”
Tony smiled.
Rhodey and Tony flipped through the pages, reminiscing about old times, laughed about old jokes, kissed when they felt particularly affectionate until they reached the part where the photo album was blank.
Rhodey looked up to Tony in question.
Tony grinned, “the last half we’ll fill with photos from this.” And he showed Rhodey a black instant Polaroid camera.
Their first photo after that was Rhodey kissing Tony deeply.
~~~
The habits fully returned a year after DADT was repealed, triggered by Rhodey catching on to Tony having a panic attack while they were on a date.
“Tony? Are you okay?” Rhodey asked, moving to hold Tony, that had begun to shake.
“Ye-yeah, I have to- I have to go,” Tony stammered and quickly exited the restaurant. Rhodey chased after him but what he saw when he walked outside was the Iron Man suit flying away.
Rhodey called Tony, and when there was no answer. He went to Tony's house, this time not taking a rejection. He banged on the doors and demanded Tony let him in.
“Tones!” Rhodey hugged Tony as he walked into the apartment, “what the fuck was that? Are you having a panic attack?”
“I don’t know, I-” Tony leaned into the touch, melting in his arms. Tony was very sweaty, and he was shaking like a leaf in Rhodey's arms.
“Breathe in and out, Tony,” Rhodey instructed, deciding to ignore Tony brushing him off for now.
“Your heartbeat helps calm me,” Tony mumbled.
When Tony stopped shaking, Rhodey turned Tony towards him so they were face to face. “Tony, baby... why did you run out of the restaurant? I could have helped you. You know I used to have panic attacks too.”
Tony looked away from Rhodey’s gaze, “you would’ve wanted to comfort me. We can’t be seen affectionate in public...”
Rhodey stared at him, trying to see how serious Tony was. When a nervous expression was all the looked back, Rhodey enveloped him in his arms again.
He should have known. They rarely held hands in public. They never kissed goodbye when everyone could see. They only times they said I love you were between each other. They weren’t a PDA couple. Not anymore.
But they could be, “baby, anytime you want me, in any way you want me, you can have me. You can hold my hand, you can ask for a hug, you can request a kiss... whatever it is... I’m yours.”
Tony didn’t respond, he only buried his head in Rhodey’s chest and silently cried.
~~~
After that, Tony and Rhodey got back to their PDA habits very quickly. They kissed hello and goodbye, they said or shouted I love you in public, they gave each other flowers when everyone could see and they held hands every chance they got (sometimes while flipping off the paps).
“I miss DADT,” Pepper groaned as she watched Tony and Rhodey cuddle, in the middle of a passionate kiss as Pepper said her joke.
This was so fun to think about, seriously you’re awesome and I love you anon ♥️
Damian:
• *looks in the mirror five seconds after the spell hit. gasps* “I’m HIDEOUS!!!”
• Wayne Enterprises employee, smiling brightly: “Good morning Mr. Drake-Wayne. How are you today?”
Damian: “I don’t know but you’re fired.”
• He gets so fed up with having to push Tim’s bangs from his eyes that he resorts to borrowing Cass’ sparkly butterfly hair clips to keep them up and out of his face.
• “Why am I only an inch taller than I used to be? I still can’t reach Pennyworth’s cookie jar even on my tiptoes. You need to grow more, Drake.”
• He finds out why Tim wears long sleeves so often, but he doesn’t say anything to Tim about it. He does file it away for future conversation, though, and he monitors Tim more closely even after the whole incident is over.
• “Damian, why are you chugging an entire carton of milk?”
“Because Drake is too small for me to tolerate any longer. I’m a beanpole. A toothpick. A runt amidst a litter of bats.”
• *goes outside for an hour* “HOW THE HELL AM I SO SUNBURNED??? WHAT ARE YOU, A VAMPIRE???”
• He’s sad when his pets don’t recognize him and run when he tries to pet them. As a solution, he douses his entire body in catnip. Turns out Tim never told him he was allergic to catnip, so that was an interesting discovery.
• He has to drink at least four cups of coffee a day or else he gets sick because at this point Tim is addicted to coffee.
Same goes for normal food. Eating ramen noodles with goldfish and butterscotch pudding is fine, but he ate one (1) apple and his body tried to reject it.
• Ives: “Hey Timbo, what’s up?”
Damian: “Uh....Hello, associate of mine. Feeling very fleek today. Everything is cool beans. Crackalackin.”
Tim:
• “Why are my pecs so huge.” *cups them* “They feel like rock hard muscle melons. Like a cantaloupe filled with pure power. What strong breasticles.”
• He’s amazed by the amount of muscle on Jason’s body and spends most of his time trying to see what stuff he can crush with his bare hands.
*breaks a stick in half* “I AM ALMIGHTY.”
• He braids Jason’s white streak and pins it back with some pink hair clips Steph gave him.
*poses in the mirror* “I’m a buff zombie princess.”
• *on the phone with Roy* “Hey Roy, so remember that secret I told you once and demanded you never to tell anyone else? Yeah, that one. Would you mind explaining it to me in explicit detail, slowly so I can write it all down.”
• *gentle gasp* “I’m allowed to drink alcoholic beverages in this body.”
*later that night after his fifth shot of appletini* “DO YOU EVER JUST THINK ABOUT THE MUPPETS AND CRY??? KERMIT THE FROG MAN, KERMIT THE FROG.”
• He has to wear sunglasses and a hat whenever he goes out because he has to make sure no one in Gotham recognizes the late Jason Todd.
• The first time he sees what Jason’s body really looks like under all the armor and layers, he’s shocked. Jason doesn’t take his shirt off in front of people much because he’s embarrassed by all the scars. Tim tries not to look at them because he knows Jason doesn’t like sharing this detail with anyone, but occasionally he finds himself absently tracing the autopsy scar under his shirt. He has a new respect for Jason after this whole ordeal.
Jason:
• “I feel like an overcooked noodle.”
• Adjusting to how flexible Dick is turns out to be quite the experience. He does the splits with no problem. He swings from a tree branch and lands on the ground as fluid as a leaf. He does four backflips in a row.
Jason, cartwheeling through the room: “Watch as he flips with the greatest of ease, the rad noodle man on the flying trapeze.”
Dick, in his tiny Damian voice: “That’s not even how the song goes!”
• “Why does my mouth taste like ketchup and ice cream 24/7. What do you eat, Dick.”
• At first he thinks it’ll be nice for once, being able to walk around Gotham without worrying about people recognizing him as being a dead man. Turns out, it’s almost worse when he can’t go to a McDonald’s without a bunch of paparazzi and fan girls following him around and begging to take a picture with the hottest Wayne boy.
• He goes to the police precinct for work and is on edge the whole time because this is the first time in years he’s been surrounded by cops who don’t want to arrest him.
• Catcaller: “Hey, nice ass!”
Jason: “Thanks, I got it from my brother!”
• Dick from the next room: “If you smoke in my body and give me cancer I’ll kill you!”
Jason, with a lit cigarette in his mouth: “It’s a metaphor, you see. I died once and I’ll die again because I’m not a fucking coward.”
• After he’s back in his own body: “Hey, I wonder if I can still do all that flipsy shit.”
Later: “So, Master Jason, tell me again how you shattered your collarbone?”
Dick:
• He eats one (1) cheeseburger, but unfortunately forgot about Damian being vegetarian so he winds up getting violently sick because the body he’s in doesn’t accept meat anymore. So that was a learning experience.
• “Why does it physically hurt to smile. Who hurt you, Damian.”
“A bunch of assassins and a psychopath for a grandfather.”
• Damian may be athletic, but he’s nowhere near as stretchy as Dick is used to. He tries putting his leg behind his head and nearly breaks his pelvis.
One upside is he’s far smaller and lighter in Damian’s body, which makes swinging around on the trapeze a breeze. He’s like an Acrobat Barbie doll.
• He has to call Tim for help when he can’t reach his cereal on the top shelf.
Tim, walking into the kitchen half asleep and confused: “Are you one of Santa’s elves?”
Dick, sobbing on the floor: “I CAN’T REACH MY FRUITY PEBBLES”
• He starts crying again later that afternoon because “THIS WEAK ASS BODY CAN’T EAT SRIRACHA WHAT AM I GOING TO DO NOW???”
• He stands in the middle of the room and watches all the adults bustle around: “I am a bean. A tiny chihuahua. A mere flea in a world of elephants and woosles.”
• “If there is one upside to all of this body-swapping, at least I can finally use the Dora the Explorer baby toothpaste without being ridiculed.”
• Jon: “Hi, Dami! What’s up?”
Dick: *to himself* “Hmmm what would Damian say...Oh, I know!”
To Jon: “Salutations, comrade. Photosynthesis. Lackadaisical. The mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell.”
Wholeheartedly /10/ Auston Matthews
Tumblr media
A/N: Wow this is late, I’m sorry that it took so long. But fun fact, the next chapter is my favorite chapter that I have planned so far. So that’s cool.
You woke up before the sun had even started to rise. Your stomach was in knots which was unusual, but you blamed it on what you ate for dinner last night. Or maybe yogurt that you had after. You sat on the bathroom floor with your head leaning against the tile, hoping the nauseous feeling would go away.
 After an hour, you finally didn’t feel like you were going to throw up anymore. You carefully made your way out of the bathroom, trying to avoid waking Auston up. You knew both of the boys would be waking up soon, just because they were both somehow early risers, so you made your way downstairs to make them some breakfast.
 Out of curiosity, you pulled out the tub of Greek yogurt that you’d eaten the night before. The expiration date had passed by almost a week, which was most likely the cause of your nausea. You cursed and threw out the yogurt and went to add another tub to your grocery list.
 You were half way through making waffles when all three of the boys came wondering down. They all still looked half asleep, with their hair all messed up and eyes barely open. You almost had to laugh, but they looked too adorable all together. Auston was holing Jake, who was snuggled into his neck, barely able to keep his eyes open, while B was holding onto Auston’s free hand.
 “You weren’t in bed Mommy,” Jakey complained softly.
 “I’m sorry baby,” You said softly, “But I’m making waffles, will that make it better?”
 “I wanted to smuggle,” He mumbled.
 “We can snuggle after breakfast, I promise,” You replied, kissing his forehead.
 “Promise?” His eyes almost looked like they were starting to water.
 You almost started to cry at the sight. You’d always hated it when either one of them cried over things like that. You carefully took him from Auston and held him close. Jakey wrapped his little arms around you tightly, relaxing against your body. You kissed the top of his head, before motioning for Auston to check the waffle maker.
 “Baby, why don’t you go curl up on the couch and watch TV with Bubby until breakfast is ready?” You questioned, “Do you want to do that?”
He nodded slowly and let you go, allowing you to set him down on the ground. You rubbed your eyes and took a deep breath, feeling another wave of nausea try to creep up on you. You closed your eyes and leaned back against the counter. You took another deep breath through your nose and realized that the smell of the fruit you’d set out wasn’t helping.
 You quickly grabbed the fruit and put it back in the fridge, trying to get it as far away from you as you could. You normally loved strawberries, but the thought of them alone was enough to make you want to vomit. Maybe the yogurt did a bigger number on you than you’d thought.
 “You alright?” Auston asked, watching you cautiously.
 You nodded slowly and let out a deep breath, “Yeah, the um- the yogurt I had last night was expired. I think it’s messing with me.”
 “I’m sorry baby,” He wrapped his arms around your waist, “Do you want me to finish breakfast?”
 “No, it’s okay,” You slowly replied, “Can you just hold me for a bit?”
 He held you tighter, tucking your head under his chin. You held onto him and savored the feeling of his warmth. You could hear the TV playing in the living room. You were sure Jakey was cuddled up next to his big brother, probably back asleep already.
 You closed your eyes, seemingly melting into Auston. You let out a deep breath, finally noticing that the nausea was fading. You felt, in a way, like you could breathe again. Auston must have noticed that you relaxed even more, because he loosened his grip on you just a little.
 “Better?” He questioned.
 You nodded slowly, “Yeah, a bit.”
 “Are you going to be okay to go out later? I can tell everyone you’re not up to it,” Auston offered.
 You let go and backed up a step. You brushed some hair out of your face before pulling the last of the waffles off the press. You knew Auston was waiting for a response, even though he knew you wouldn’t bow out of the get-together unless you were actually throwing up.
 “No, don’t do that,” You sighed, “I’ll be fine.”
 “Y/N, if you aren’t feeling well-”
 “Auston I’m fine,” You groaned, “I haven’t thrown up, so chances are I’m not going to.”
 He kissed your forehead and sighed. You knew he hated it when you were sick, or simply not feeling well. He never knew how to make you feel better. He’d been that way since you’d first gotten together. He used to freak out when you had something as simple as a cold, he’d buy out every bottle of cold medicine the store had.
 “Baby, I’m serious,” He stated, “Don’t feel like you have to go. I don’t want you to feel worse because you went out.”
 “Auston, I’m sure it’s nothing, it’s probably just the yogurt. staying home from a night out with our friends and family isn’t going to help.”
 He nodded, understanding where you were coming from. He wasn’t one to slow down either. He was used to playing through every type of pain. He’d play until his body couldn’t go anymore, if someone would let him. He knew that as a mother, you’d do the same thing. You’d go and go until you dropped.
 You finished the rest of breakfast and called for the boys to come get their food. They were both slow moving, but eventually made it into the kitchen. The four of you sat in the little breakfast nook, slowly and sleepily eating your waffles. The boys elbowed each other while fighting over the syrup.
 You were able to keep your breakfast down, which was am miracle given how you’d felt all morning. Auston had been able to wrangle the boys back upstairs to get them dressed and ready for the day. He’d said that he’d help them so you could have a little bit of time to yourself.
 You appreciated when he did things like that. He knew that during the season it was hard for you to keep everyone going, especially when he was on the road. He’d told you that the off season should be just as much a time for you to rest as it was for him. Plus, he always wanted to spend as much time with the boys as he could.
 Later in the afternoon, after the boys had played close to fifty games of mini hockey, the four of you loaded up and headed out to Topgolf. The boys were practically bouncing in their seats. What they didn’t know was that some of the guys had flown down for the weekend and would be joining you all at Topgolf.
 You couldn’t wait to see the boys’ faces when they saw everyone waiting on them. You’d only been back in Scottsdale a little over a week, and they were already talking about how much they missed the team. You knew it was hard for them to have to leave everyone for the summer months. They didn’t always understand all of it, and you couldn’t blame them for it. It had to be so confusing for both of them.
 The two boys tried to drag you and Auston through the parking lot. They loved golf almost as much as they loved hockey. They loved going out with Auston and the guys. Secretly, they loved it even more when Alex took them to the golf course during the summer.
 “Daddy hurry up!” Jakey yelled, trying to drag Auston behind him.
 Auston laughed and scooped up Jake, “What are you going to do now little man?”
Jakey jokingly pounded on Auston’s chest and yelled to be put down. But the smile on his face said otherwise. Brian got a better grip on your arm and pulled you with him. You laughed at both boys. Brian was trying to pull you with all his might. You began to wonder how they’d be if they realized that Matt, Sydney, Mitch, and Steph were waiting on all of you.
 Auston shot you a mischievous look, you knew that in a lot of ways he was just as excited as the boys would be. You grinned as the four of you made your way to the correct bay. Auston was doing everything in his power to try and keep both boys distracted so they wouldn’t notice the four-people waiting on them.
 Steph caught your eye and smiled waving quickly. Auston set Jake back on the ground and looked at both boys. They stopped and looked up at the both of you, confused as to why you’d both suddenly stopped walking. Auston looked over at you and then back at everyone waiting a few feet away.
 “Boys, can you turn around for me?” Auston asked them.
 Both boys slowly turned around and looked towards the group before screaming and taking off towards them. Brian, much to your dismay, jumped on one of the chairs before actually launching himself on Matt. They both got to see Mitch and Steph all of the time, but the Martin family was a different story. Jakey tried his best to jump on Mitch, who ended up picking him up and bear hugging him.
 After a minute or two the boys switched, somehow managing to say hello to Steph and Sydney in the process. You and Auston stepped in right after, saying your hellos to everyone. You hadn’t seen Matt or Sydney since the Leafs played is Islanders.
 “You look good, Y/N,” Matt told you after you hugged him.
 You shrugged, “Off season air is good for the soul.”
 “Sure, it’s just the air,” Steph commented.
 “Stephanie,” You warned, glancing over at the boys who were now fully immersed in a conversation with Mitch, “There are children here.”
 “Shit, I forgot about Mitch,” She joked, “I’m kidding, obviously.”
 You sighed, trying not to laugh. Off to the side, Mitch was trying to show Jake how to hold his golf club, because it’d been a while since anyone had actually let Jake golf. He was good at sports already, but he was also extremely accident prone. He often accidentally hit people or golf carts when he actually went golfing too, so that was another reason you didn’t let him go a lot.
 “No, Mitch move,” Matt bumped Mitch out of the way and leaned over to show Jake how to hold the club. You pulled the two girls to sit down while the guys tried to figure out what the hell they were doing. The three of you soon fell into a deep conversation, picking up almost where you’d left off the last time all of you had been together.
 “Oh! Why don’t we get those fun little donut holes with the syringe full of chocolate,” Sydney suggested.
 Your mouth watered at the thought of them. You were always down for something that involved lots of chocolate. While the boys started the game, you girls continued to chat about your off-season plans, and what you thought the next season would bring. You knew Matt and Sydney were both more than happy in New York, even though you missed them both terribly. So did your boys, they loved their Uncle Matt and Aunt Sydney.
 Auston, Matt, and Mitch were all arguing about who could make the ball go furthest. Each of them swearing they could hit it further. Jakey and B were trying to sword fight with their golf clubs, which resulted in Auston threatening take them away from the boys.
 You smiled at all of them. One of the best parts about Auston playing hockey, was that you got to have friendships like these. They were all more like family as far as you were concerned though.
 “So, did you and Auston ever talk about number three?” Steph asked.
 “We did,” You replied slowly.
 “Wait, are you and Auston thinking about another baby?” Sydney asked, “I’m so out of the loop.”
 “We aren’t having one,” You stated, “Yet.”
 Sydney and Steph both squealed a little, which luckily could be dismissed as excitement for the donut holes that were delivered at the same time. You told them both to be quiet, stating that you and Auston didn’t want to make a big deal out of it until there was actually a baby to celebrate. And even then, you’d both decided to take a calmer approach to baby number three.
 Because you didn’t expect to be pregnant with either Brian or Jake, the two of you had some fun telling everyone that you were pregnant, and then did a whole gender reveal party. You could still remember raiding Pinterest for hours trying to put it all together.
 But this time around, the both of you had decided you wanted everything to be a little more relaxed, especially since the boys would have to get used to the idea of someone else being in their lives. You didn’t want to overwhelm them in anyway. Plus, if you did manage to get pregnant, it would be during the season, and it’s always hard to try and schedule things and get everyone in one place long enough to make it happen.
“Aren’t you going to get one?” Steph asked, reaching for another little donut.
 But the thought of now having to eat the donut, with all of the chocolate, was enough to make your stomach churn. You wanted to eat it, god did you want it, but you quickly realized that your body wouldn’t let you. You closed your eyes and took a deep breath, waiting for the feeling to go away.
 Once it had passed enough, you grabbed your water and drank almost the entire glass. While the boy’s paid no mind to you, the girls were all ready to question you all about it.
 “Are you sure you aren’t pregnant?” Steph questioned.
 “I had some bad yogurt last night,” You replied, “Besides, all the tests have been negative.”
 They both gave you a look. But you knew that there was no way you were actually pregnant. Not when the last few tests had all come out negative. But you were fine with it, the timing was just off. You could wait, it would all work out somehow.
 “C’mon Jakey! Swing!” Brian cheered.
 Jake, who was up next to hit the golf ball, swung as hard as he could, but neglected to hold onto the club the entire time. Right after he hit the ball, he let go, causing his golf club to also go flying away. Brian fell silent and looked up at Auston. Jake was looking at his now empty hands and then back out towards where his club had landed.
 Everyone was trying not to laugh, because you all knew that would make Jake feel bad. But at the same time, you almost couldn’t help it.
 “Daddy…I… I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to!” Jake cried.
 “It’s okay Little Man,” Auston promised, picking Jake up, “It happens sometimes.”
 “I think you win, Jakey,” Matt announced, “Maybe your old man will let you get some ice cream?”
“I think that’s doable,” You answered.
 “And then we can go home and watch a movie before Aunt Steph and I have to leave, how does that sound?” Mitch questioned.
 “Really?” Jake’s eyes were still watering, but his smile was as big as ever.
 “We’ll even play some mini sticks with you,” Matt promised.
 “Okay!” Both Jake and B cheered.
