Canon Marauders meet Fanon Marauders

“I will kill him, James. I simply have to kill him. It’s a duty at this point,” Sirius whispers, at breakfast. 

James is morally opposed to murder, to say the least, but now when he opens his mouth to automatically tell Sirius he can’t kill people, the Abomination walks into the Great Hall, and James closes his mouth, with a sigh. 

He condones it. 

“Can you kill me, too, please?” Remus asks, as he watches his counterpart walk behind the Abomination. 

“Oh, come on! The Other You isn’t so bad.” 

“They’re all bad,” Peter mutters. “Just unbearable to watch.” 

They’ve only arrived in this cursed universe the day before, but it’s already too much to suffer. 

When Sirius met this universe’ version of himself, he had to be restrained from committing unspeakable violence. 

“What’s with the pranks?” James wonders. “Look, they’ve only just entered the Hall and they’ve already pulled a few pranks.” 

“You call those pranks?” Sirius sneers. “Those lame jokes?” 

“They probably take the ‘prankster’ label too seriously,” Peter bemoans. “And I’m missing again. It’s like I don’t even exist here, like those guys forget I’m their best friend.” 

After the Other Sirius, Other Peter was done the dirtiest. He’s much uglier than the real one, far shorter, and so stupid Sirius thinks he shouldn’t even be allowed to attend school. 

Not that Other Sirius is smart- oh, no. Other Sirius is a moron, apparently allergic to books. 

Remus got an upgrade- he’s now a wise genius to rival Dumbledore, and he spends his days giving people chocolate frogs.

It’s a wonder the Abomination is so thin, with how much chocolate he’s getting from Other Remus. 

So thin and short. 

“Why am I short?” Sirius growls. “I don’t know mate, it’s like the creator of this universe misremembered our heights and switched them around,” Remus offers, watching his other self, a very tall bastard. He’s even taller than Real Sirius. 

Outrageous. 

“I could suffer you short,” James says. “But look at him, he’s - why is he so…is that ...nail polish? Gods, what have they done to my Sirius!” 

“I asked him if he still has the bike,” Peter whispers. “He said he does, but I mean- he’s so fragile and dainty, how does he even manage that monster bike?” 

Sirius shakes his head in horror. “I have to kill him, there’s no way around it.” 

The Other Sirius whines in the distance. “MOOOOONY,” he pouts, and that's it, Sirius stands-

“Not here,” James pulls him by his sleeve. “You can’t have witnesses.”

It takes them a few days to figure out what’s wrong with Other James. At a first glance, he looked normal, compared to the others. Almost unchanged from his real version, if only stupider. But not as stupid as Other Sirius and Other Peter, of course. 

A chicken wouldn’t be dumber than those guys. 

When they do figure it out, James throws up. 

“There, there,” Sirius pats his back. “Breathe, mate. Breathe.” 

“I’m fucking your brother! Your brother, Sirius!” 

“Oh, no, that is not my brother. That is Other Brother.” 

This version of Regulus is apparently not a bigot at all, it’s all just a big misunderstanding. He’s an Animagus, too, somehow. 

Sirius actually thinks Other Regulus is an alright lad- nothing like his brother, mind you, but alright, in general. 

James throws up again. “Me! With Regulus Black! I’m not even gay! I love Lily, and she loves me-” 

“Well, apparently she’s gay, too, in this world.” Remus says, which only makes James cry.

That isn’t so bad, really. Many things are wrong with this universe, but Lily and Dorcas look hot together. Sirius had a wank thinking of them the other night. It’s fine, he tells himself. He’s not betraying James. This Lily is nothing like their Lily back home. This one is like a goddess of beauty here, hair far more vibrant than the Real one, flawless skin and overall perfect in everything she does. Extremely selfless, saint-like, to the point she apparently offered to carry Regulus’ and James’ baby after Hogwarts.

Real Lily would hate her. 

She’s still not worse than Other Sirius. Nothing is worse than that. Real Sirius has taken to bullying Other Sirius, daily. Hourly. The Abomination whines about it to Other Remus all the time. 

“I want a word,” Other Remus hulks over, ridiculously muscular and, for some reason, with scars on his face. 

What the fuck happened to this bloke? Who even is he?

Real Remus slinks back. He was never one for confrontations, their Remus, but apparently this upgraded version is all up for it. 

“Listen,” Sirius tells him, because he doesn’t hate the man- sure, he’s not Remus, but he seems like a nice lad. “Why do you put up with that insufferable drama queen? He deserves to hang, and you deserve better.” 

“That’s my baby! That’s my Pads,” Other Remus says, suddenly all violent, his eyes turn yellow- what the actual fuck? 

But Sirius is already nauseous, stomach turning as soon as he heard ‘baby’ and ‘Pads”  coming out of his mouth. 

Real Remus cheers from the sidelines as Sirius wipes the floor with Other Remus. The Abomination cries somewhere in the distance, all helpless, until Real James hits him over the head with a candlestick. Other James is too busy sucking Other Regulus’ face to notice anything.

Other Snape has a split personality, as if someone out there can’t decide if he’s evil reincarnate or a mewling, innocent boy. 

It’s jarring to see the shifts, day to day, and Sirius doesn’t know which version he hates more. 

He never thought he’d miss Snape, but he does. He misses their Snape, gods damn it, the Real one.

He finds out his parents- or at least his parents in this world- torture Other Sirius on a daily basis. With the Cruciatus, even. 

Other Regulus tells him this, all traumatised. 

“Well,” Sirius says, shocked to the core. He almost laughs at the absurdity of it. “To be fair, if I had a son like the Abomination, I’d torture, him, too.”

Dumbledore is Evil. But stupidly so. Even a random eleven year old saw through his evil plans and humiliated Dumbledore at breakfast. Some smart arse kid, who’s apparently Lord Potter Black Gaunt Slytherin, and talks like an eighty year old politician. Apparently Dumbledore stole his money or something. 

“I wonder how Other Voldemort is like,” James says, anxious to consider it. 

“I don’t even care,” Peter says. “We should join him. It’s either him, or siding with these lunatics.” 

They all nod in agreement. Voldemort can’t be worse- nothing can be worse than Other Sirius and Evil Stupid Dumbledore.

There’s two Voldemorts. 

One is practically a ‘cartoon character’ Remus says. Sirius has no idea what that means.

This Voldemort is Ridiculously Evil. 

Insane Bellatrix is his most loyal. For some reason Insane Bellatrix cackles all the time, and mutters about blood and the Cruciatus under her breath. She’s also dressed like a slut. 

Real Bella, like the aristocrat she is, would never be caught looking like that in public. 

Sirius takes her aside to have a few words with her, and then he finds out apparently she, too, was tortured daily by her parents, like Other Sirius. 

“And raped,” she remembers, with a shrug.  

Wow, and Sirius thought the Real versions of the Blacks were bad, but these people take the fucking cake. 

If the Real Blacks would find out what these Other Blacks are doing to their children, there’ll be hell to pay. 

His mum is a right basket case back in his world, insufferable and cruel with her words, unreasonably strict, but if she’d ever find out another version of herself is torturing her children- why, she’d cut that bitch in pieces.

The second Other Voldemort is some misunderstood good guy with a sob story. He whines about his tragic childhood as much as Other Sirius. 

At least this Other Voldemort is still tall, unlike Other Sirius. 

“It’s all Dumbledore’s fault,” he ends a monologue. “He made me do all I did. Or-” he checks a list. “Apparently sometimes he simply framed me and I didn’t do anything at all. Also, you can call me Tom, in private,” he invites them. 

It’s a tragic state of affairs. 

They decide to join Ridiculously Evil Voldemort, simply because he’s the only one that wouldn't protest to murdering everyone. He talks about murder every single day, and Sirius promises him he’ll do anything If he’s allowed to kill Other Sirius. 

“Oh, by the way, you should deal with Good Guy Voldemort.” 

“With who?” 

“You know, the hotter you, the one that’s innocent of all wrongs and calls himself Tom.” 

Evil Voldemort has a heart attacks and dies.

They’re on the run from everyone in that crazy world, when a hooded figure enters their tent.  

“Is it you? Is it really you?” the man asks. “Potter? Black? Lupin? Pettigrew?’ 

“Yes, it’s us.” 

The person lowers his hood. It’s Snape. Real Snape. With greasy hair and a large nose, but with intelligent, sharp eyes.

There’s no ‘Victim’ stamped on his forehead, nor is he an evil arrogant bastard, like the Other Snape.

“Fuck, Snivellus! A sane person! I could hug you!” 

“I’d rather not,” Snape spits at James. “Alas, I am...relieved to have found you. We need to work together. I came here after you-” 

“Of course you did, you berk! You were stalking us, as usually, weren’t you?” 

“Yes,” Snape says, unashamed. “I killed the Other me.” 

“Good job. I killed the Other me, too,” Sirius boasts. “I took my time with him.” 

“I killed Other Lily,” Snape says. “She had to go. She was all ...wrong.” 

James sniffles. “She was.” 

And then they all sit down, and plan how to kill Good Guy Voldemort and Evil Stupid Dumbledore.

I saw this list and thought it would be fun to give it a go!!

1) Fic that's made you laugh the most

He May Be The Reason by @c-goldthorn. It's a Clegan Notting Hill au and it makes me squeal with delight. So cute that I got distracted while reading it and missed my stop on the train.

2) A fic that made you cry

my kingdom for a kiss upon your shoulder by pillar of our community @swifty-fox. I'm sure most ppl have probably read this one but it's such an amazing post-show continuation that really doesn't pull it's punches when it comes to both PTSD and the realities of being gay in the 40s

3) Fave comfort, silly fic

It's a little rogue but I'm gonna say Awake, Alive by the wonderful @whirlpool-blogs. It's a pet sematary au so not exactly what you would call traditionally comforting but the ending makes me so happy and the whole thing is just a joy. The fact that this came to mind when I thought 'comfort fic' is probably pretty telling about me as a person....

4) The fic that made you try a genre or trope that you don't usually read

This is also a bit rogue but it was tricky since I'll read anything, so I'll go with Strings of the Strings of Life by the lovely @weimarweekly, not because of any of the content but because I don't, as a general rule, read Dune fic that was written after Dune 2 released. I've bored everyone to tears with my complaints about that version of Feyd but it is what it is so I tend not to like any fics written about that version of the character BUT the prospect of a feydpaul Berlin techno au was too delicious to resist and the whole fic is so fun. It makes me miss Germany sooo bad.

5) An author who has inspired your own fic writing

This one has got to go to the anonymous author of both Close And Yet Closer and The Replacement. Both of these fics are god tier and their character psychology and willingness to allow their versions of the characters and relationships to be ugly and messy are so inspiring to me. They were also the first person in the John/Hausman tag on ao3 which is currently just me and them. I think about the replacement all the time and it was a HUGE influence on 3am Eternal. If I can ever write half as well as them I will die happy.

6) What are your fave underdog authors? Those that you feel are underappreciated and deserve a bit more love

Hmmm, this is kinda hard cus the MOTA fandom is pretty small so I feel like a lot of stuff gets decent buzz. Imma shout out @whirlpool-blogs again and especially their fucked up clegans fics, I have read and reread all of their works and they're always so so good. I will also add @steeseman for Up In Our Bedroom. It's another great post-canon fic and while it has a lot of hits, I don't think I've seen anyone talking about it on here.

7) What's one thing you wish writers/readers did more of when it comes to fanfiction.

The obvious one is comment, it really does make my day when I get a nice comment, even just a couple words or an emoji mean a lot. The other thing I would say is writing curt/Kenny fic, there's not much out there and I want more please. Also more fics where characters relationships are like genuinely kind of fucked up and toxic. I love that shit.

8) What's one thing you wish writers/readers did less of when it comes to fanfiction.

Oh man, I really do not know. The only thing I can think of is that I hate the word 'yap' or 'yapping' so if I see it in a fic I shudder. Hmmmm, I guess I also wish that there was a little more consideration when writing Gale's dad as an alcoholic because it's often treated as the basis for him being a shitty person. Addicts aren't automatically bad people and I sometimes feel like it's portrayed that way. @blixabargelds wrote an excellent post on this

9) I'm adding an extra one and that is current WIPs I am reading

Sympathy For The Devil by @blixabargelds, it's a modern ghost hunting AU and the set up is AMAZING. I will also throw Superstar in here even though it's not releasing main story chapters yet, everything Frankie writes is so tailored to my personal tastes it's crazy and I am so excited to read @mildharm's John POV chapters too. Literally foaming at the mouth thinking about it rn. When it starts being released fully, I fear it may kill me.

Love Song From A Dog and The Heart Is A Muscle by @swifty-fox. I've only just started THIAM but I'm so hyped for their take on the tattoo shop/flower shop au.

Hit Me Where The Heart Is by @london-cowboy makes me legitimately insane. I jump for joy whenever there is a new update, these versions of the characters and their stories are, as Paris Hilton would say, beyond. I do not have the words to say how much I am loving this fic. The characters and setting feel so real and it's just so creative. AMAZING.

I need to get around to starting let us not desert one another; we are an injured body and also the time skip fic whose name escapes me by @irregularcollapse and also catching up with @weimarweekly's rodeo fic, Looking For Eight

So I am openly trans, and my partner is straight, and it's a new relationship, too recent.

And since I am openly trans, (I have been in pride, I am in lgbtqia club in uni, have been going to doctor regularly, etc.) I thought he knew when we first met. Because like, we met at a pride-like celebration ( in January, it was kinda new year for gays? It is almost the same as pride believe me). He said he came to support his sister (lesbian) and such. We talked there. I didn't had a noticeable flag on me, my nails painted in trans flag colors and my outfit in those colors too but not a flag directly.

Anyway we exchanged numbers, we talked, we talked more, hangout, after about 3 months we started dating at 1 April (bad date to start dating I guess?)

And now, after 15 days, I realized he doesn't know I am..trans? Like. Is he blind.

I've been a lesbian for the past five-ish years and since I figured it all out I've been really secure. But recently there's been this one guy and I've just been really confused. I've questioned my sexuality a few times but always in a passing conforming to the expectations of my extended family kind of way and just the thought of daring a man would make me feel off. *rubs hands* certainly! i am glad to have an excuse to talk about one of the best shows that is sooo severely underrated. this got long, i'm sorry, and I barely scratched the surface.

the gifs in question are from a TV show called wynonna earp, it ran between 2016-2021 in canada and on syfy channel in the US, consists of 4 seasons, season 1 with 13 the rest with 12 episodes, and there's also a movie that came out in 2024 on tubi.

the show is based on comics, it's gothic western horror/action/thriller/suspense/comedy/drama monster-of-the-week type of show with an overarching arc and its own lore that keeps developing with each season. it's kind of like supernatural if it didn't hate women and was actually good. as someone who grew up with xena and charmed this show was exactly up my alley from the start.

the titular character is wynonna earp, who is a descendant of the legendary gunslinger wyatt earp, and she's destined to put down 77 revenant demons (outlaws that her ancestor killed with his magic gun peacemaker) in order to break the family curse, revenants are former humans that come back from hell as demons. this is just the starting point, it gets much better and more complex. wynonna is a loveable screw-up and a badass at the same time.

for lovers of old men and implied yaoi there's john henry holliday aka actual doc holliday from history and he's an immortal but also spent almost 150 years down a well as a result of an insane psycho-sexual love triangle between wyatt earp, himself and another guy (it's not explicit but it's basically what happened lmao, and they do 'jokingly' call him 'wyatt earp's boyfriend' at least once), he also happens to be wynonna's on again off again love interest but everyone is bi vibes and flirting on this show not including characters that are explicitly gay/queer.

there's a bunch of loveable main and recurring characters (honestly love everyone in this bar) but of course the main draw has always been the relationship between waverly earp (baby sister of wynonna and saying more about who she is would be spoilery) and officer and later sheriff nicole haught, known as wayhaught. they are basically the show's main romantic couple and they get the main couple treatment which was a first for me with a wlw couple. epic story and epic chemistry and it gets explored. they are basically known as horny monsters but also so in love that cupid himself commented on how in love they are. it's super refreshing to see two women who are allowed to be unabashedly horny for each other, the show doesn't shy away from that, and at the same time their relationship develops and grows deeper every season.

the thing is this show came on scene in 2016, at the height of the backlash to queerbaiting and the bury your gays trope in tv shows (2015-2016 season was particularly egregious with something like over 20 lesbian/bisexual women killed off across many different tv shows) and the fans were hurting and mistrustful, and the showrunner emily andras and the crew and everyone behind the show went 'no, we got you, we are not doing that', first they said that wayhaught will definitely happen without fear of spoiling their show (you have to understand the show barely started, it was like around second episode when nicole and waverly have their meet cute, one of the best ever, imo, and people watching the show, me including, were like 'aw they have such great chemistry, too bad it's not good to happen' and yet the showrunner told us that it will, right away).

and the second most important point is that they said outright that they will not kill off their lesbian/bisexual characters, so when nicole gets shot in S1 she is wearing a bullet proof west specifically as a response to other lesbian characters of other shows that weren't. this show embraced and welcomed a traumatised audience, the one that usually gets overlooked (remember how often shows that cater to queer women get cancelled) and was loved back dearly in return.

it will always have a special place in my heart and i wish it had 15 seasons to explore the lore and story they barely scratched the surface of. but even what we do have is wonderful and infinitely rewatchable, this is a rare show that loves its fans back and has no disdain for enthusiastic people who kept it on the air (there were campaigns too).

tl;dr: it's a great show that i highly recommend. one of my all time faves. found family, monster of the week, it's hilarious, it has heart and multiple queer characters. more people should watch it.

I have only watched five BL series so far. The only guitar I've encountered was in Hidden Agenda. But Joong can actually sing and play the guitar. So it wasn't cringy. Gawin is a singer as well. Maybe it won't be that bad either.  🤣 I have hope.

Tong is supposed to be 20 here? 😂🤣 I can suspend my disbelief for a lot of things. But it gets hard when an almost 30 year old man is cast as a 20 year old one. Gawin is sweet, but he has no baby face at all. 😂 But he can play naive and confused and distressed really well.

Tong is so done with this “Never spill a drop of blood”.

I felt a little bad about ranting in a reblog of your post, but I also didn't want to make my own post because my rant is directly related to what you've been saying and context is important, so I'm just gonna leave this here:

It's honestly baffling to me (as someone who does in fact love javid) how some fans are so adamant that Katherine or Sarah were only put into the story to keep javid from being canon or just so Jack had a girl to snog at the end.

First of all, allow me to introduce you to my precious newsgirl Charlie who was Jack's first love interest in the original script because newsflash: Jack was and always has been written to have a romantic plot with a girl. Not David.

Charlie was cut because her story was too dark for Disney (her aunt was a prostitute and they lived in a brothel) and was replaced by Miss Sarah Jacobs. Again. Not David.

Yes, many of Sarah's scenes were cut from the film, but that does not mean that Sarah wasn't important or that her relationship with Jack was thrown in at the last minute because Newsies was looking gay. Kenny Ortega is a gay man and he did direct the movie but that doesn't mean he didn't care about Sarah and that doesn't give you license to dismiss her. The movie simply didn't care much about romance because it's central message was family. Jack finds family in the newsies and he finds family in the Jacobs and that's his happily ever after. The romance with Sarah was a comparatively minor subplot, but I assure you it's still there.

Fast forward to 2011, Harvey Fierstein quite literally reinvented Newsies to "follow the love story" of Jack and Katherine. His reinterpretation sets up a story of Jack Kelly and Katherine Plumber/Pulitzer who are both looking for something which they ultimately find in each other. And hey! Guess what! They do in fact fall in love, and it's cute, and it isn't at the expense of some great Jack/David love story. Jack and Katherine are the love story. And frankly, I've never really understood how purely musical fans even landed on Jack/Davey in the first place because there's really not much there in the script.

Anyways, people are allowed to ship what they want, but what isn't cool is pretending that the canonical relationships only exist to ruin your ships.

TL;DR Hate on Katherine if you want, but Jack Kelly loves her.

This Limus drama is crazy and has progressed in ways I would have never expected. Since Limus is one of the few anti hazbins I somewhat agree with, I wanted to talk about it.

TW: SA, abuse, stupidity

Before I start I wanna make two things clear

1, Limus is an sa survivor. I am not. That doesn't mean my criticism is not valid. It also doesn't mean Limus's criticism is automatically true either.

2, I am going to be as fair to Limus and give her the most benefit of the doubt as I can. Why? Because too many times I see people say someone is lying just because they disagree. Limus does not like Hazbin Hotel. But I will not say her critique is wrong just because of that.

So, what started this drama? This video: How Not To Write A Victim of Abuse

In this video Limus makes these points. There's more than this but these are the ones I'll be talking about:

Angel Dust is a harmful gay stereotype such as "horny drug addict" and that's his entire personality

Poison ruins the seriousness of the episode

Loser, Baby is harmful because it encourages victims to self destruct

Angel Dust encourages people to believe being an SA survivor is "cool"

So a lot of people complain about how Limus "doesn't understand Angel Dust!" I however agree with both sides. I agree that Limus misunderstands a lot of things about Angel Dust, but that doesn't mean she's wrong.

Angel Dust technically is a harmful gay stereotype. But I think what Limus misses is that's the point. He's SUPPOSED to be harmful, to himself and others. This is just how a lot of people who have suffered abuse act. I can confirm. But at least to me, I agree with Limus that it's a negative. While the way Angel Dust acts might be accurate, that doesn't make his personality any less annoying and bland.

This point is the one I disagree with most. Poison is one of the only things Angel Dust's character gets right. Appearently it's bad because it just conveys "slutty cartoon character" but that's just not true. It is a bop that perfectly conveys Angel Dust's otherwise poorly written mask.

Loser, Baby... I cannot defend. I think it is worse than Poison by a landslide, probably my least favorite song in the show. Now before everyone starts spam reblogging me "Wow, you're so stupid, you don't understand the message of Loser, Baby!". Just stop. Get that finger off the reblog button, you won't change my mind. Loser, Baby had poor timing, Angel Dust's voice sucks (Sorry Blake), and I am pissed knowing HuskerDust will probably happen.

This point is a point I'm mixed on. I have heard how people feel so seen by Angel Dust and that he's even helped them out of their abusive relationship. But I'm sorry, Limus is right... In a way. It is weird how people post clips of Poison or Addict and say "slay" "he ate" "what a baddie"

All in all, I agree with Limus that Angel Dust is poorly written and that it's crazy how people always say he's such great representation. This is an awkward situation because I don't exactly feel comfortable discrediting all the victims that feel heard from Angel (Which I'm not even if I think it's weird) I thought Limus felt the same... Until recently.

At the end of the video Limus explains that Hazbin Hotel gets way too much hate and people are allowed to like Angel Dust if they please. I thought that was great. An Angel Dust hater that is chill about Hazbin Hotel fans.. Then she pulled this...

For context from what I know, Limus got dragged to a convention by a friend who is a fan, I forget if it was a Hazbin Hotel specific convention or something else and she just so happened to see Alex Brightman, but whatever it was, she was obviously prepared with this sign. This is just disrespectful. You do not show a poster like this in public and get a VA who isn't related to it in any sort of way to sign it. If you don't like a show, don't interact. Simple as that. Don't get me wrong, I understand how it feels to be bumbarded with shit you hate. I hate RadioApple, HuskerDust, Angel Dust, but I will not spam to every post that includes them how shitty I think it is.

She carried around a sign with disturbing imagery (I wouldn't say it's horrendous, but y'know) in public and had a VA sign his signature to something he might not know anything about. Do you realize what that can do on the internet? For a VA to sign the poster of an anti in a fandom like THIS? That could have caused an absolute uproar of people sending him death threats because they think he agrees with someone in the hatedom. That wouldn't be Limus's fault or problem, but who's poster did he sign?

I don't think Alex Brightman got any threats for this thank god.. But someone did.

Now of course, there's the possibility Limus is lying, but I doubt it. And if she's not, it's really shitty to say a victim is lying.

Here's the thing guys. I know it's annoying to see people be so unfair towards Hazbin Hotel, overly criticizing it to pieces. But that's no excuse to threaten them for it. HI I just finished The Chosen and The Beautiful by Nghi Vo and was wondering if you'd read it/had any thoughts on it?

Yes I have, and yes I do. Spoilers below.

Anyone who's on this blog knows I approach adaptations of any sort with a very critical eye. But! I am willing to at least try with any of them, and like with many others, I was just sort of disappointed.

The concept really, really drew me in. A very much queer retelling of Gatsby? Oh god yes. From Jordan's point of view? Absolutely. And they're not all white? Oh fuck yeah!!! Like the concept of Jordan as a queer Vietnamese woman reacting in real-time to the story we know in love was what made me pick this book up before most other adaptations.

Unfortunately, the magic really, really threw me off. I don't hate fantasy as a whole, but it's far from my favorite and it really felt out of place in this world. Everything would be fine and realistic and then all of a sudden they're drinking demon blood or there's a really fuzzy depiction of a portal to a gay nightclub in 1920s Manhattan. This sort of application of the fantasy themes felt unevenly applied, erratic, and unfocused, and to me, came at a detriment to the rest of the novel.

Part of the base novel for me is the magic Nick finds in the real, actual sights before him. Gatsby's parties. Daisy's house. The Valley of the Ashes. This story doesn't need magic, per se, because the magic comes from the narrator's wonder at their often otherwise mundane surroundings. I don't know if Nghi Vo didn't trust Jordan's pragmatic, cynical point of view to be able to see the magic in this story (if she even should have had to, to begin with) or if she just really wanted to write a fantasy story.

Characterizations also felt entirely off, and not just in a realistic, necessary, interesting way that would have to come about to adjust for Jordan being a woman of color and in control of the story. Gatsby talking about sucking dick and cock comes to mind immediately. What was that? As someone who knows way too much about that man, it doesn't really bring to mind that 'absurd formality' and tightly-wound liar with a silver-plated tongue.

Which is another thing. Look. I'm ace. I know other people are getting it on. These two things coexist. But...a lot of the adult content in this story felt rather shoehorned in, kind of in the same way as the magical stuff. Especially the ending with Nick and Jordan. By that point I was really fed up with the book and sort of skimming with eyes that hadn't blinked in a while, so maybe I missed something, but while I am fully aware of and supportive of Jordan getting lucky whenever she wants, it just felt like fanfiction I would have written at age 14 in how the sex was just suddenly THERE.

Again, it's been a minute since I read it, so maybe I'm misremembering a little. But still.

I think Nghi Vo had a story to tell that could have been better served as its own free-standing plot rather than a Gatsby adaptation. Instead of really working cleverly with the source material, the two sides of the story are working against each other. it's like trying to add milk to lemonade. Two good things don't necessarily mix to create a great end product. Maybe if she had kept it as realistic fiction (because I would have loved to see how a real queer Vietnamese 'Americanized' woman, even as Jordan Baker, would have actually lived through this plot—that's actually what I thought it was when I picked up the book, and I had no warning for the wind-flying in the beginning), or just written it as a totally un-Gatsby story, I think it would have been served much better.

Of course, everyone is allowed to write whatever they want and I'm glad for that. But as someone who cares very deeply for the source material and wants so desperately to see more taken from it, Chosen just felt off the mark for me. It wasn't what I hoped it would be, in a bad way. I learned a little bit about Vietnamese culture, which was nice. The prose was fine except for some really fuzzy bits where I genuinely lost the plot. I just wish it was different. Either a realistic fiction interpretation of the Gatsby story from the eyes of Jordan as a queer Vietnamese woman (which is what I thought it would be) or as a 1920s fantasy novel about a young Vietnamese American woman's struggle to ground herself in a changing world (which I probably wouldn't have picked up, to be completely truthful). Unfortunately what we're left with is a talented writer's attempt at doing too much at once.

I'll try to read it again if you suggest, but it kind of sits down there with Self Made Boys, where the concept was so interesting but there were just some major parts that sank each project as a whole. Oh, well. They can't all be @irisbleufic's The Pursued and the Pursuing.

I suffer dysphoria myself and am in therapy for it. I do not consider myself transsexual, nor am I pursuing any type of transition, but I understand the struggle. I was at my worst mentally when I was active in the trans community
