The atmosphere around them is tense and every sudden noise Addison hears has her on edge. This is going to be a long day, she can tell.

"The next time someone says a place is hunted, don't go in!" - Garth

She's in the library sitting at a table with her laptop in front of her. The motel she's staying at doesn't have wifi, so she had to come to the public library to use there's. Garth came along and she assumed it was to help. But now, it's clear to her that he only came to talk her out of this.

Standing up from her seat, Addison places her hands on the table in front of her. Hands form into fists as she stares at the man sitting across from her. "Garth, if I don't go in some idiot will and get themselves killed!" she says, her voice raising slightly. "I have to find out who the ghost is and what's keeping them in that house. If that means going in alone, so be it!"

A loud, "SHHH!", can be heard, coming from the librarian sitting at the check out desk nearby.

Addison gasps, realizing she's getting too loud. A quick apology is mouthed to the librarian. Then, Addison turns her attention back to Garth. "I've fought ghosts before. I'll be fine. And if you aren't willing to help me with this, you can leave."

Why I draw Spamton the way I do and in defense of the "Tumblr sexyman" Spamton G. Spamton. An ESSAY.

EDIT 2/3/24 - Fixed some grammatical errors, changed font colors to make them easier to read against a white background, and reframed some of my arguments, especially regarding the "Yaoi style" portion, as it came across as ignorant and spiteful.

I follow the #spamton tag here, and I hate to say it, but it's full of artists jabbing at other artists who so happen to draw Spamton handsome. I see comments like, "No, he's a middle-aged sleazeball who is grungy and dirty." Often, these depictions show him with graying hair, ratty clothes, and covered in filth and grime. While there is nothing inherently wrong about drawing him this way, I find it disingenuous that the same people who draw him this way criticize people who draw him more handsome and or clean-cut because this depiction is even less based on his canon appearance than someone simply drawing him more realistically proportioned and with a pleasing visage (the definition of what this is varies by artist, but they're all often reduced to just "tumblr sexyman.") I see similar comments by people who draw him in what they may describe as "disgusting" or a "dirty scammer."

If Toby intended for Spamton to look dirty and gross, he would have simply gone with a similar design route to this character as an NPC in Undertale.

Toby or other official arts never depict him with the following, even though I see it in fan art all the time:

Ball-jointed hands. Some artists draw them properly and make them look super cool. Simple lines aren't how they look in reality, but I get why people do that. Either way, it's not canon.

Dirty with tattered clothes. Spamton is only ever shown with a black blazer. It's debatable if he wears pants, but Toby has also drawn him with a collared shirt and tie.

Graying hair. Should be obvious. He's only ever seen with jet-black hair.

Overweight/Fat. While some fan depictions of this are cute, it's not canon. Spamton is always drawn thin but not necessarily in shape.

Buff. Same as the above. It looks really good in some fanart but is also not canon.

Tail. It can look really, really cute, but not canon for him or any of the Addisons.

Feathers. Only Swatch and the Swatchlings are depicted with feathers in Cyber World.

"40+ years old" - There is zero evidence of this in-game or in official merchandise or media. This assumption apparently comes from people assuming that his birthday would be the same as the first "spam email," which (at the time of this writing) was 46 years ago. This is a false equivalency since there is no indication that Spamton has any associations with our real-world history of spam emails. It should also be noted that this was not a true spam email. The only thing closest to Spamton in association with real spam email history may be his favorite year, 1997, in which spam marketing emails became frequent nuisances. However, actions to stop spam mail started in 1996, and it was by the 2000s that they became a serious concern because technology had since advanced. If he were truly born in 1978, he would only be 19 by 1997. While not impossible, it's not how most people see him in his Big Shot years of barely just entering adulthood. Also, as someone who has lived through most of the 90s, I can attest to a lot of this. Spam stuff existed, but news reports only heavily got into it by the 2000s.

100% Inorganic or Robot. While a cool idea, there is more evidence against this, like his ability to eat, sleep, and genuinely feel pain.

Boobs. I get most people who do this are doing it for fun, but it's not canon to his design, lol.

Tall. The most obvious one. Spamton is below average height, as made evident by his nearly 1:1 scale with Kris, a teenager.

Toddler-sized. Same as above. I won't lie that it can be drawn super cute, though. Haha!

With all that being said, why is it such a contention among his fans to depict him as handsome?

There is evidence to support that Spamton is at least, to some degree, good-looking but unconventionally attractive based on several sources. It should be noted that people often use his shop sprite as the best representation of his head, but this isn't accurate, either. In Undertale and Deltarune, because of its cartoonish sprites, it shouldn't surprise anyone that Spamton's are the most inaccurate and change frequently. Another user posted an entire comparison of all his sprites and how drastically inconsistent they are. I tried searching through my likes for this, but I can't find it. If anyone finds this, please link or reblog it to this post. Anyway, the intent of the post was to show artists that there are numerous different ways you can interpret Spamton's design with what's provided in the game, alone.

Stuff people often miss that is canon:

Lips. Believe it or not, this bastard's got kissable lips. Toby's recent art and his Neo attack are proof of this.

Eyes under the glasses. Seen in his sprite of going "BIG SHOT" the first time with Kris. It also hints at heterochromia because they contrast in color with yellow pupils under the pink and pink under the yellow.

NEO has no visible jaw hinge line. Only puppet Spamton does. Big Shot Spamton doesn't have one, either.

NEO's glasses' colors are reversed, and they are pince-nez style.

Androgynous sense of fashion. This is the least missed one, but it's worth mentioning. Spamton has no issues wearing pink, a color nowadays associated with women, and the NEO body has fabulous heels in addition to mostly being a magenta pink. The dress on the mannequin that greatly resembles him (and may hint at him being a white Addison before) shows a pretty dress that mirrors the one Mettaton wore in Undertale.

So then, WHY is he being depicted as handsome or unconventionally good-looking a BAD thing?

There really shouldn't be an issue with it at all. It's less offensive and technically more canon than many of the supposed depictions of him being a sleazebag who looks like he hasn't showered in a century and is hooked up on drugs or booze. You don't become a media darling without a charming personality. Mettaton only got successful in Undertale before he got his EX body because there was literally nothing else the people could watch. Spamton, on the other hand, was competing against many, so he had to stand out and look good even with the help of Mike (and possibly Tenna).

I often see people make this very reductive argument that it's a "yaoi style." This is by far one of the stupidest arguments I've ever seen. Drawing good-looking men is NOT equivalent to liking Yaoi. There are plenty of other genres of Asian-origin or Anime-styled media that feature pretty boys that have nothing to do with Boy's Love. Even Shounen anime has some bishies. Drawing bishounen-style male characters is a design choice and does not indicate someone's interest in Yaoi media. I swear, I have never seen this problem with Eastern fans. It's rude to lump people with similar art styles under something most people who make this claim don't even understand. I've seen people make upset comments about other people calling their style stuff like "Cal-Arts" even if they never went to Cal-Arts or like the media produced by them. It's the same principle. Stop lumping entire artists under one umbrella.

I draw him handsome because it's simply the way I see him. I love many other depictions of him, undoubtedly, and I even have a sticker set that depicts him with the graying hair, but it looks really good anyway. My point is, the fact that people who draw him dark and handsome shouldn't be scrutinized any more than people who draw him way more off base.

My personal contentions with the assumption he is a "dirty sleazebag old man."

I find this absolutely hilarious because this is a genuine stereotype and stock character of people similar to him. The douchebag salesman is a trope that's been around for a long time, but people don't seem to realize that this is a caricature and not representative of real salespeople.

Go to any @$%^ing department store or even an electronics one. Do you ever see anyone selling you stuff looking like they crawled out of the trash? Most are lower-class people who can't find any other job, meaning they are stuck with sales. It takes skill to be a good salesman, and I hate to brag, but I can probably sell you a #@$%ing soap bar and convince you that the extra $10 you're spending on it over a drugstore brand is better for your hands by deeply moisturizing them through herbal extracts and only "naturally" derived cleansing agents. Your hands are dry from the cold, drawing moisture out of them, so the investment would be worth it for the health of your skin during this harsh winter season. Why risk a drugstore brand that will only make your hands feel even rougher, flakier, and cracked? Stuff like this requires you to look someone in the eyes and observe who they are—their body language, way of carrying themselves, and the cadence of how they respond to your words. Does it always work? No. However, do you think anyone would $%^&ing buy ANY LEGAL PRODUCT if a salesperson looked like they were a shady crack dealer who was suspicious as %^&( to deal with? NO. It's a stereotype caricature for a REASON. It's meant to demean the reality of the salesperson who is forced to peddle a stupid product for a living. It's hard, and if anything, GET MAD at the people who are the ones making the crappy product! Yeah, some salesmen are bad at their jobs, but do you really believe that Cyber City's #1 RATED SALESMAN got there from being mediocre?! He may have gotten outside help for something that Toby never made clear, but he definitely does NOT lack the personality to make a great salesman. And believe it or not, there is plenty of evidence to prove he WASN'T bad at it! The other NPCs sell stuff that was once his goods but with his labels removed, and based on his statement of wanting to "make his own deals," this heavily implies he was NOT selling products he wanted to sell before he became a Big Shot. He has a strong sense of pride in the way he sees and presents himself, and I think this may be overlooked by people who make him look as ratty as possible.

I will also CLEARLY state this but this depiction overall does several of the following, which I KNOW many people will say is bad:

Ageism. Why do so many people, mostly Zoomers, assume that a man in his 40s is washed-up, gross, or even considered old? I've seen hotter men in their 40s than some young men in their early 20s.

Downplays his mental health struggles. One of the best things about Spamton is how he DOESN'T play into just the "sleazebag" stereotype. Once we go into his shop, we see that he is truly just a very broken man. His theme song is a FARCE to try and convince you that he's tougher than he really is.

Classist/Poor-Shaming. The assumption that a homeless person has to have no sense of cleanliness. Please, for the love of all that is good, meet actual homeless people. Not all of them are like this. Spamton clearly keeps himself rather clean for someone who dumpster dives. He is trying to stay true to himself, and his sense of self is one of pride. There is no dialogue or description to imply he smells or lacks proper hygiene.

Again, while there is nothing inherently wrong with drawing him this way, I just want people to be more aware of why they draw him this way. Think of it like a thought experiment to reflect on why you see him the way you do. How I draw Spamton comes from a place of deep empathy, love, and life experiences I've had in sales in addition to ALWAYS being customer-facing, meaning I know what works and what doesn't for over a DECADE. It's rather bizarre to me that people who claim to be big fans of him draw him in such a demeaning way that goes beyond the canon depiction and lowers him to absolute dirt, almost like beating this character with the ugly stick just because it's "funny." Is he a tragic character to you? Or is he simply a clown to laugh at for his failures and hardships? How we depict and see people is utterly fascinating because it reflects in real life, too.

You can take the exact same person and show them to different groups of people, and they will all see the same person differently. They don't have to be artists, but they tend to vary if you ask their opinions. For example, I think the actor Mads Mikkelsen is very attractive, but I know many who wouldn't understand why. A guy I've had a crush on for years is one of the hottest men ever to me, but a friend of mine called him "just a guy."

I fully understand that some people find the way I draw him stupid. It is what it is. I can't force you to like it.

I'm simply trying to point out my reasonings for why I draw him this way, and I would like others to think about their methods, too, and NOT to bash other people outright or go "ewww Yaoi tumblr sexyman" just because someone doesn't depict him with stereotypical traits or as "100% canon style" (which is mostly just copying the game's sprite style.)

Addison wanted to tell him the truth, but considering how scared he looked, she decided against it. It's not like this guy was going to come across a real, dead ghost, right? And if he did, well they'd cross that bridge when they came to it.

"Of course. They're just urban legends - stories. Nothing to worry your head over." she replies, turning her head to look at him. Addison flashes him a soft smile. Reaching out, she pulls a book from the shelf, adding it to her growing stack of books.

"Sorry if I scared you. My name is Addison."

Oh. Truly this couldn't be happening, surely she was simply messing with him...right? He couldn't quite help but to hide behind the book that he'd been about to purchase, not at all caring about the strange looks that he received as he stared at the girl with wide fearful eyes. Perhaps he was a little too trustful, but she'd sounded so sincere when she'd spoken that he thought it more rude to not believe her. "B-but...ghosts can't be real...right?", he finally asked as he managed to find his voice again, his voice slightly breaking, causing him to hide behind the book once more. At his side, his butler Jean looked close to losing his patience, holding his head in one hand for a second before addressing the girl to have got his young master worked up so easily. "Apologises - he tends to take things to heart. Of course, you were just talking about stories, correct?", he gave her a very pointed look, hoping she'd simply nod and allow this all to drift away.

Addison takes a seat across from him, placing her own coffee onto the table. Removing her crossbody satchel bag, she places it onto the booth's seat beside her. She's not surprised he doesn't believe her. She doesn't look like the hunting type, sitting there in her Team Edward crop top, button up sweater, and dark, ripped jeans.

"Yes, I'm stronger than I look." she responds. "Saving people, hunting monsters, it's what my family does." She lifts the flap on her satchel bag, searching through it for something. Addison pulls out an old worn notebook, placing it onto the table near her coffee.

"What kind of monster did you need help with?" she asks, turning her head to look at him. Neither of her brothers knew she'd come here to meet with this stranger on her own. She knew when they found out, they'd be pissed. They'd told her not to meet with this guy, but curiosity got the best of her and she decided to do it anyway.

He was being to doubt that this was the lead that he was looking for. The girl before him didn't seem the type of know much about anything, nevermind the hidden creatures that inhibited this world - which he'd call anything non-human for now. Sipping from his coffee, he watched the girl that sat across from him. How to even start up such a conversation in the first place. "Are you the one who answered the posting? No offence or anything, you just don't seem the type to...well even believe in the supernatural nevermind know much about them". Another long sip taken of his coffee as he watched her carefully. If this was another dead end, he'd really need something to take this growing temper out on at some point.

"Hi. I just moved here." - Ella

Dark eyes shift and her body turns, looking away from the shelf filled with different grocery items. She's doing a bit of shopping, as her family needed food for dinner. "Oh?" She's surprised to hear this. Why would anyone want to move to Lebanon, Kansas? There's nothing special about this place. Except for maybe some of the weird supernatural phenomenon that sometimes happens because of she and her brothers.

"Welcome to Lebanon, I guess." she responds. Addison shifts her feet awkwardly. Turning back to the shelf, she pulls off a package of ramen and puts it into her red shopping basket. "I hope you like it here." she adds.

Day 15: Belittlement

Fandom: original characters

Characters: Cal, Skylar

“Cal!” Loud banging on my door was somehow become the alarm I didn’t want, dragging myself from the bed I go to stand beside the door,

“Yeah?” My voice quiet and croaky from being abruptly awoken,

“Get ready we have plans this morning remember,” right, Skylar wanted me to meet her friends today. Why did I agree? You may ask, well you see I (as an adult) have the inability to say no to the literal sunshine that is my roommate.

Why am I like this?

“Alright.” With that I trudge around my room and grab various clothes as well as a binder, changing as quickly as possible. Checking the birds nest that is my own hair I decide brushing it won’t help and just leave my room to brush my teeth instead. Finally, I make my way to the table and flop into one of the seats,

“Morning,” Skylar says from across the table, pushing some cereal my way,

“Morning,” I mumble back pushing said cereal around the bowl. A few moments pass in silence as I take a few bites,

“Cal, we don’t have to do this if you don’t want to.”

“No, no,” I nearly choke on my breakfast “it’s fine.”

“Are you sure? Because I know people aren’t really your thing and-” pushing my boundaries I make an effort to grab her hand,

“Skylar really, I’ll be okay.” She doesn’t look convinced to my fayed confidence, but half accepts it anyway,

“Okay, you let me know if you’re not okay though,” she holds onto my hand,

“I will, I promise.”

Our meeting point was a park not far from campus, a five-minute walk at most so we set off ten minutes early in order to find a good bench. Skylar’s friends went to a University in the next town over and since it was spring break there they’d contacted her for a meet up, Skylar brought me because she says, and I quote ‘you need to get out of the house before you become so pale you crumble’.

“That one looks good,” comments Skylar walking towards an empty bench in the sunlight, I follow close behind picking at the sleeves of my gray hoodie. Quietly, we sit at the bench waiting for the others, I lay my head on my arms on the bench top, closing my eyes with the sun radiating on my face. For a moment I swear fingers had been run through my hair before-

“Skylie!” Yeah that, or that’s what I translated the high pitch squeal to anyway. Opening my eyes, I see three girls running to hug Skyler, they’re all brunettes with an ombre to blonde, whether it was intentional or not I wasn’t sure.

“Hi!” Skylar responds, how do these people raise their voice to an octave just below dog frequency? I pick my head up off the table and get up to awkwardly stand by the table as they all hug and air kiss, this is not a side to Skylar I expected,

“It’s so good to see you all.” She looks back to me, there’s a light in her eyes I’m obsessed with, “Cal this is Avery, Abigail, and Addison.” They’ve definitely coordinated this, “girls this is Cal.” I give an awkward wave from behind Skylar who I’m basically using as a shield, for good reason too as they all open their arms to hug me, Skylar holds out her arms in front of me,

“They aren’t a hugger.” Disappointed and astounded looks plaster the faces of the girls as they back off,

“But like, how can she not like, hug people?” Asks the one on the left, judging from her voice I’ll guess she’s from Essex like Skylar… except dialled to eleven.

“Some people just don’t, Avery,” explains Skylar,

“Yeah don’t be rude Avery,” snarks the one in the centre. Skylar suggests we should all sit on the bench to catch up, the three clones think it’s a ‘splenderific’ idea, they sit on one side while we occupy the other.

Skylar does majority of the talking and I’ve never appreciated her so much, throughout the entire time I could almost swear the three A’s kept giving me dirty looks. Skylar kept in contact with me in little ways, a brush of the knee, tap of the hand, fluff of my hair, it made me feel safe.

“Skylie, we should go grab everyone some coffee,” suggests Addison who sits across from me,

“Sure, there’s a van close by that sells some, me and Cal’ll grab some,”

“No, me and you should go, you know her order and I know the other two. It’ll be easier that way,” it’s the way Addison emphasises ‘her’ even though she knows my pronouns, it’s how convincing she makes her argument sound.

“I just don’t want to leave them alone,”

“She won’t be alone, we can babysit her,” chimes Abigail, Skylar is becoming slightly unnerved and so am I,

“Why are you guys-”

“It’s fine Skylar,” I pitch in, she still looks slightly concerned when looking at me, “get us some coffee okay? I’ll take a-”

“Caramel frappe with one shot of coffee and three sugars that’ll make you feel sick later.” She knows my coffee order. A small smile crept onto my face,

“Sounds perfect.” Ruffling my hair, she and Addison go off to get our coffees, leaving me alone with Avery and Abigail.

“Alright bitch let’s make a few things clear.” Oh no, confrontation.

“I’m sorry?” My voice is only just audible,

“Don’t act innocent, you’re converting our friend, who by the way is straight,” what?

“Just don’t expect to have a chance with her,” my panic is rising unconditionally.

“No one would want to be with you anyway.” Oh.

Coffee wasn’t really appealing to me after that conversation Skylar had place it in front of me and I hadn’t even taken a sip, she kept looking at me with concern,

“Hey, you feeling okay?” She whispers in my ear, I nod back,

“Just tired.” She wrapped it up sorta quickly after that which I felt horrible about especially with the looks I got from the three A’s. Skylar didn’t bring it up again as we walked back on campus, and up to our dorm.

“Are you sure nothing happened?” She softly asks as we come into the room again,

“Everything’s okay, I’m just going to my room for a bit,” I mumble leaving her no time to respond as I shut my door. On my way to bed I catch my reflection in the mirror, my unruly hair that I can’t control, my chest that’s a fake version of my dreams, my dark clothes that are so bland, the acne on my face, my chapped lips, callused hands, gangly limbs. The more I look the worse it is. Rage and sorrow bubbled beneath my skin as I threw the mirror on the floor, along with the one hanging from my wall, glass shatters all around me as I see myself again in the mirror attached to my wardrobe. Tears I hadn’t felt streamed down my face, I punch the final mirror feeling the glass on my knuckles, I hit it again and again and again. Sobs racking my body as I see myself in the fractured reflection, blood leaks from my knuckles. My door opens and I know Skylar’s there, the glass on the floor crunches as she approaches me, wrapping her arms around me as I’m turned to face her.

“You’re okay.” Sobs leave me again,

“You’re amazing.” We both slowly sink to the floor together,

“You’re beautiful.” She continues to reassure me with positive words as we sit on the floor hugging but even as she says them I can only think of one thing.

Title: E-Mail Guy's first day lol

HEY EVERY !! ITS HIM! N0 BUDDIES FAVORITE [[E-MAIL GUY!!!]] 

Well, well, here is my first ever DELTARUNE fanart! I've loved this game since it first came out, and while on disability, I played Chapter 2 and loved it even more than Chapter 1. This guy captured my [[HeartShapeObject]] the moment he popped out of the trash. He's officially my favorite character ever made (yes, I am dead serious about this.) I REALLY like this character, so expect to see more of him from my gallery even if you don't want to!

Why did I draw him this way? Answers Below!

Spamton's back story is mysterious, and the game doesn't give us much to work with regarding his past. This drawing is based on my interpretation of him before he became the lovable trash puppet. There are a lot of fan interpretations of Spamton as an Addison, but I rarely see anyone draw him with black hair. I like his contrast with the black hair against the white skin (is he Snow White??!), but I understand why fans choose to depict him with white hair while he was still the "e-mail guy." I included a variant with the white hair for anyone who prefers that version. The white hair makes sense, but I like the idea of him having black hair as an "error" or anomaly. The gray outline is based on the sprite of both him and the Addisons. I'm a little bummed out to see most fan art does not include their cute little glow. No other NPCs have this look, so I believe it was intentional. 

My theories regarding the Addisons and Spamton are based on my experiences working in Sales and Customer Service (and yes, at some point, I was the e-mail guy lmfao.) Spamton confirmed in a Q&A that he was shorter than the others before his downfall. It's hard to tell in this picture, but he is still short, just closer to canon height, which is slightly shorter than Kris. I imagine the Addisons as being like male ballet dancers because of their attire and pointed feet. I'll probably write a speculative fanfic on this because I find how these characters work fascinating from the perspective of someone who studied advertising and sales. I also did ballet for nine years, so funny that. HAHA!

In this image, Spamton has not yet been relegated to the e-mail job just yet as they test him to see how well he performs on the floor. From my experience, if you suck at doing something upfront but your employer still likes you, they'll move you into another position. So, this is before they do that. LOL  Likewise, if you are not very good at ballet, you get sent to the back or to a spot where the audience can't see you very well. 

Anyway, I hope to do more pics of this character and his co-workers soon because I really like them, haha!
