–* THE PAST / PRESENT

nate is the second youngest of five children (two older brothers – brian & james, one older sister – heather, and a younger sister – beth) and was born/raised in reno, nevada. his dad has retired but owned his own appliance repair business. nate's mother was an emergency room nurse, but she has also retired. his parents now both live in a retirement community in north carolina so they can visit the beaches in the summer season. his eldest sibling inherited the hackett home back in reno, where nate's comic and fan memorabilia collection is stored.

since there were five kids in the hackett house, it was always kind of a whirlwind. there were always birthdays happening, friends tromping through the house, holidays with extended family, and fights over room/toy/clothes sharing. the one thing that nate had to himself was his love of all things geeky.

none of his other siblings shared his interest in various comic books, card/tabletop games, and movies. he was free to explore those interests all on his own.

every week, nate would use his lunch money to buy new issues of comics being serialized. he would draw, at first, by tracing the panels in comics that he found the most intriguing. he branched off to drawing his own heroes and villains, writing storylines for them, and stapling together stacks of printer paper he had turning them into "comics."

the same store where he bought his comics in reno also held various tabletop gaming nights where nate met many friends who shared his interests.

nate got his first job as a sophomore in high school at the comic shop, it was where he spent most of his time anyways so he might as well get paid to be there.

when it came time to decide on after high school plans, nate's dad was urging him to take on the family trade of appliance repair. already, nate's two eldest siblings were working on the family business. one had gone to technical school to become an electrician and the other had done training in general appliance repair while apprenticing with nate's dad.

his third eldest sibling had disappointed nate's mom and dad by leaving nevada and going out of state to study communications. they wanted to be a journalist, not work for the family's appliance repair business.

nate was about to disappoint them just as much, he applied not only for technical schools but out-of-state colleges as well. the university of new mexico gave him a hefty scholarship, and the opportunity to study visual art, but to appease his parents he chose instead to go to central new mexico community college to study heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVACR).

he loved new mexico so much, though, that he made the decision not to return home after completing his associates. his parents were upset at his decision, but were still proud of the fact that he had chosen to pursue the family's trade with appliance repair. he made the move to roswell after living in albuquerque from the time he was 18 to the time he was 24. while in albuquerque he was working as an appliance repairman but he honestly hated having to constantly zip around from house to house everyday just to do his job. he made the decision that he wanted to work somewhere stable.

when he saw the lunar laundromat in roswell was hiring, he thought it was the perfect fit. he had the skills to fix the washers and dryers when they went down, but he was also could sit at the counter and read comic books during the downtime he had. he could also work on drawing his own comic.

currently his paycheck goes to four things: rent/bills, groceries, comics, and art supplies.

he still does some freelance repair work for extra cash on the side. but, you'll mainly find him at either the lunar landromat, forbidden planet, or at home.

personality wise: nate is real geeky, he appreciates a good pun and rarely takes anything seriously. he will gladly ramble on and on about anything and everything that is related to his favorite subjects (art, comics, magic: the gathering, pokemon cards, the star wars franchise, the warner bros monsterverse, and other weird old movies)

his favorite color is a red-orange, he frequently wears his red-orange windbreaker and a las vegas 51s baseball cap. he prefers dc to marvel, especially because his favorite series is swamp thing. he is most proud of the fact he owns swamp thing #1 with a 9.6 certified guaranty company (cgc) rating. this means it is in near mint condition and alone is worth approx. $1k. he also has a personalized autograph from len wein (the original writer of the series).

he frequently drives to comic cons in the western states (primarily CO, NM, AZ, NV, and CA). for his 18th birthday, his parents bought him VIP passes for san diego comic con which was like his dream come true.

–* POSSIBLE CONNECTIONS

since i know it can be difficult to find some connections off the bat here are some possible suggestions to get ideas flowing. i am also a fan of just starting threads and seeing where muse's chemistry goes.

D&D PARTY MEMBERS / we already know what a huge nerd nate is, but if your muse is also a nerd i am sure nate would love some party members for a d&d group in roswell. rather than an actual dining table, nate's apartment has a board game table. he just eats on his couch instead and uses the board game table for get togethers with the party. this doesn't have to be exclusive to D&D, but could extend to MTG and/or pokemon

FREQUENT FREELANCE CLIENT / is your muse prone to accidents? constantly blaming mercury in retrograde for their fridge breaking or their AC unit leaking? nate is happy to help, for a small price or a gift card to the forbidden planet so he can buy the latest issue of that one comic he's reading.

LAUNDROMAT PALS / since it takes at least forty-five minutes to get a small load of laundry washed and dried, nate is happy to entertain and talk to customers as they wait for their clothes to finish up. if you're real nice to him, he may even give you a detergent pod for free so you don't have to risk a couple of quarters at the janky dispenser.

EMERGENCY CONTACT / since nate's family is all out of state, it could be useful to have a ride-or-die who he can call at any time for anything. he definitely has broken a couple of fingers or slipped while jamming out too hard to the chats while in the shower. who you gonna call? nate's emergency contact!

Charlie Dalton

i’m not sure that i could pinpoint very many artists he’d particularly like, but this is a classic rock boy right here. he’d be into ac/dc, motley crue, led zeppelin, etc. perhaps a bit of duran duran (this is where i’m projecting the most.) songs about s3x and women, and songs that make him feel like the rebel he is. (this playlist has been gale hansen approved on twitter btw)

Neil Perry

oh i just know this kid would be into some funk and pop, especially 80s and perhaps even new wave (i’m again projecting). now THIS is a duran duran fan (specifically their early stuff), which is unsurprising since the lead singer has a drama degree. he’d also probably like fleetwood mac, and would be well-versed in the band’s drama. duran duran, wham!, fleetwood mac, abba, maybe even some hall & oates. songs with complex lyrics and also songs that make him wanna dance. lots of upbeat stuff because though he has things that bother him, he’d rather do anything but dwell on them.

Todd Anderson

honestly, considering they’re roommates, i feel like neil would’ve had a bit of an impact on todd’s music taste, so there’s some band influence there—but regardless, i think todd would be into more mellow and emotional songs. jeff buckley comes to mind, along with the eagles, the beatles and maybe a splash of the smiths also pls pretend now and then didn’t come out last year. he would also be letting it linger i fear

Knox Overstreet

knox would be similar to Charlie, as they probably bond over shared music taste just as much as everything else. very heavy on the classic rock, but a lean more towards songs about needing someone and love songs as he pines for Chris. Tom Petty, Robert Palmer, The Cars, and a bunch of songs introduced to him by Charlie. He sticks more to genre/theme than to a specific artist methinks

Richard Cameron

contrary to what some may think, i think Cameron would absolutely groove to some rock n roll. HOWEVER. he is a 60s-70s rock n roll elitist. he thinks Billy Idol’s cover of Mony Mony is a disgrace. he wholeheartedly believes the Beatles are the best band to have ever graced the planet. The Beatles, The Beach Boys. The Rolling Stones, etc. Maybe even some Simon & Garfunkel. Him and Charlie argue a lot about which decades were the best years of rock music

free my boy. he just wants to dance he ain’t do nothing wrong. his music taste has definitely been influenced by some of the other poets, in the sense that if he hears a song with a funky beat that makes him want to dance, it’s added to his mixtape IMMEDIATELY. for this reason, i’m thinking lots of funk and groove. play that funky music white boy! for once I’m not asking for angst 🤞 what kind of music would the modern au characters like? Like genres and bands :)

completely biased because i listen exclusively to musicals and late 00s teenage angst black parade is forever BUT

arthur: country music. including white girl country-pop music. can be caught doing little shuffle steps as he discreetly tries to dance along to a song stuck in his head while mumbling the lyrics under his breath. has main character moments smoking outside at night listening to need you now by lady a.

lenny: really into remixes. likes the extra pep it puts in his step, will accidentally walk to the beat and look like a dork. surprising amount of rock. but anything that's super lyrical, songs that tell a story, he will add to his playlist. duets what you own from rent with sean on karaoke nights.

sean: could not name a single band or genre he listens to because it's just anything with a high enough bpm to make his brain buzz. honorable mention to the cranberries and flogging molly but will do a fully choreographed routine to jailhouse rock without a single drink in his system.

hosea+bessie: any old timey easy listening ballads, occasional swing. hosea can't sing to save his life bless him but will still sing the really cheesy romantic lines to bessie as they slow dance in the living room after a few glasses of wine they're so in love please. anything that would be a first dance song at a wedding they have in their playlist

dutch: opera and orchestra forever. exact same music he listened to at camp will go on about kids these days and the hippity hop they dare call music. it takes him exactly 3 seconds after being introduced to cds and digital downloads to become a vinyl purist even complains about record players over gramophone.

annabelle+susan: annabelle is probably the most adapted to modern era she will listen to anything radio popular and susan is the same way inclined thanks to her job at at the local pub. but they both particularly enjoy bonnie tyler, kate bush and a sneaky bit of abba. think mamma mia is a cinematic masterpiece.

molly: mitski. boygenius. phoebe bridgers. aurora. any indie female lead who sings about broken hearts/betrayal/angry break up songs. listens to a suspicious amount of queer artists too.

kieran: the definition of 'i'll just be here listening to my tunes' only for the speakers to immediately cut to screamo. occasionally they can hear the bass through his headphones and gently remind him to turn it down to protect his hearing. despite this he will always get the mlp theme song stuck in arthur's head at the worst times.

javier: disgusted that disco was dead by the time he timewarped. just wants to boogie to that 70s funky beats. definitely has a playlist dedicated to john marston that is just any song with a reference to wolves. thinks he's hilarious. is the reason john can identity hungry like the wolf within two seconds of it starting (he walks out) (javier learned it on guitar. and both in english and spanish)

jack+isaac: mcr, panic, fallout boy. they will forever be on that angsty teenage bullshit. isaac may have designed them fabulous killjoy ocs and jack proceeded to write a 100k word self-insert fanfic about them. and they have matching mcr lyric tattoos. and mutually agree the kids from yesterday was actually written about them. play that g note and they both collapse with sorrow.

On a rainy day a while back I made some very self-indulgent playlists for what music I think Abby and Hoagie would listen to (and thought way too hard about it). I could probably never do this for every member of Sector V because I don't think my music knowledge is that bespoke, but I think my taste and what I personally see the two of them liking overlap considerably, so I had fun with it. Hoagie Abby Some rambling under the cut

Hoagie loves a wide range of music, from good stuff to corny shit-- he is cringe but free. I think of his tastes as being categorically: -Early 2000s and late 90's R&B- Troop, D'Angelo, Boyz 2 Men, to a lesser extent Luther Vandross. Probably would also overlap a bit with Rap artists like Biggie Smalls. -Solo Crooners- Your Tom Jones, your Lionel Richies, your Barry Whites. I don't really think of him as a crooner, but I'll also toss Christopher Cross in there for fun. I think Hoagie would try playing Barry White in the COOLBUS on the way back from missions and Abby would yell at him for it. She can clock the longass intro to Never Ever Gonna Give You Up instantly from repeated experience. -Classic Funk and Soul - Rick James, Average White Band, Bootsy Collins, Earth Wind and Fire, Chaka Khan. Play that Funky Music White Boy is a certified Hoagie Anthem. -Detective-Core- This isn't a scientific category, this is vibes-only. But you KNOW Hoagie has The Classics in his collection. Deacon Blues, Copacabana, Shaft, Street Life, Ride Like The Wind, I Shot The Sheriff. Actually yeah I'm putting Christopher Cross here too. Hoagie would absolutely imagine a vivid music video of himself to Ride Like the Wind. As opposed to Hoagie, I think Abby's playlist is more defined by meticulous craft and impeccable vibes rather than what's most popular. She's generally more discerning about what she considers her favorites, but there's still a lot of overlap between her and Hoagie. They've introduced each other to a lot of music. -Jazz and Jazz Fusion - Herbie Hancock. Abby and Hoagie (and probably the rest of Sector V) could sit and listen to Fat Albert Rotunda all day. It's just a good album. Bob James, (though Abby finds him hit and miss), a little bit of Pat Metheny, and a little bit of Miles Davis. -Funk and Soul...2 - Stevie Wonder, Commodores, Abby introduced Hoagie to some great jazz-influenced artists like Quincy Jones, and Hoagie introduced her to Average White Band. She also made him realize Lionel Richie had a career before going solo, lol. Both of them are all over EWF and Chaka Khan -Hip-Hop/R&B Salt N Peppa and Mary J Bilge are mainstays for Cree, which she introduced Abby to when they were younger; now the two of them are at war stealing the same 5 beat-up, scratched-to-hell CDs back and forth from each other. Cree busts down the treehouse door fully kitted out demanding to know where What's the 411 is every Saturday.

*I am a music prof (predominantly classical vocalist), and I LOVE listening to Cillian’s music choices! That being said, sometimes I won’t like a song simply because of a vocalist (it’s a professional hazard - sorry!) 👩‍🏫

*** I wouldn’t say I’m well-versed in Cillian’s music preferences, but I do enjoy them (for the most part). I always wind up adding to my own playlists after listening to Cillian’s recommendations.

🎵Set 1 (Manhattan - Shut the Door)

Manhattan: vocal harmonies are unique! Interesting how the piano chord progression never changes - you’d expect it to change for the chorus or something, but nah 😂

Pictures of You: ok but the way this would be perfect for a road trip! And it’s got a long intro for a pop song!

Everyday, I Don’t: I am looooving the guitar here!!! 😍😍😍😍 the bass line also has some fun contrapuntal/contrary motion with the guitar, and I like it a lot!!!

Shut the Door: at first I thought this sounded like the beginning of COPS (iykyk), but then things took a dramatic turn! 😂😅

Castlefields: the “sirens” on the strings remind me of a piece called “Threnody for Hiroshima,” although with a completely different intention! And against that, you have some slow, cool jazz. I really like this. ✨possibly my favorite of the episode✨

Free of the Stolen Boy: I like this, but every time he says “I want to be free,” all I can think of is Queen 😅 his voice reminds me of Johnny Cash.

Bending Hectic: I LOVE THIS! What a great concept - the “bending” is heard with all the bent notes/microtones. And then it’s “hectic” because the style continuously changes, but the bent motif continues throughout - well done! ✨another favorite✨

Life in a Scottish Sittingroom: well, at least he’s easy to understand! I was worried I wouldn’t know what he was saying! This is an interesting pick, especially since it’s hard to call this music. There’s music in the background, but I definitely call this a reading. Anyway, it’s quite pastoral.

Riot in Cell Block No 9: wow! That’s a transition, now isn’t it?! 😂 nice early rock

I Asked for Water: and now some blues!! I’m getting the sense that this set is all about “obviously from a specific country” vibes/sounds.

Obey Me Characters’ Reaction to MC Rick-Rolling Them

I honestly don’t even know if people Rick Roll anymore but regardless, I think it’d be funny to see their reactions.

Looking back, I don’t know why I did this. I thought it’d be funnier than it turned out to be. 

Lucifer:

You send him a video at 2 in the morning asking him to review the video for you

You get an incredulous response along the lines of “MC, what in the Devildom is this?”

You proceed to spam the song to him until he gave you a ‘valid’ response 

Valid response insinuating: “It’s not bad? Why are you sending this to me repetitively?”

He sends the song to his brothers in their group chat only to get a flurry of confused and amused messages

You’re done, you’re done

Mammon: 

You think you can Rick Roll the Mammon? He Rick Rolls you before you even get a chance to send him the video

It was a video he edited of Cerberus before the clip slid into the opening instrumental of Never Gonna Give You Up

He proceeds to spam videos of him cackling and one of him…twerking?

He said he’s trying to ‘get in with the trends’

Since when did Mammon turn into Solomon? 

Maybe the white hair was wearing on him.

Regardless, you do end up sending him Never Gonna Give You Up entirely blatantly. You just sent him the music video the next morning and he fell for it.

Rip he choked on his omelette at the dining table.

Levi: 

He got slightly pissed and sent Baka Mitai as a (slightly valid) response

“How could you Rick Roll your best boy!” Or so he dramatised in his flurry of messages to you.

He was just acting all babyish since he fell for it 💀 it really wasn’t your fault that he was intently watching a rhythm game’s dancing scene before Rick Astley started singing

He then began bombarding you with the lyrics and a bunch of sad face stickers such as: “yOu KnOW THe RulEs ✨ aND sO dO I 🥲”

You walk past his room only to hear Never Gonna Give You Up blaring from underneath the door.

You enter, only to find out that after you sent him the song to Rick Roll him, he ended up liking it so much that he was playing it on repeat (much to Lucifer’s dismay)

You figured he was just doing it to irritate Lucifer, however, he claimed that it was ‘good accompaniment’ to his ‘reading material’

Says the man that was reading Naruto 🙄 no one come at me, I just don’t know why he was reading that of all things.

Case and point, Satan had apparently gone as far as to putting it in his playlist alongside ABBA and The Bee Gees…poor Levi had to listen to ‘Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!’ and ‘Honey Honey’ for the whole night.

Asmodeus: 

Spams fake gasps in his messages and sends crying emojis accompanying texts such as “hOw CoULD yOu, MC! I HaD fAiTH iN YoU, DaRlIng 😭” and simply just “😩 😭”

He admitted later on that he was being slightly dramatic (incredibly, but it’s not like he has an ego or something.) and ended up laughing at the video that you sent him

He came up with the idea of cosplaying…? As Rick Astley.

So guess what the two of you spent your Friday evening doing.

He took mirror selfies of the two of you in your shitty Rick Astley cosplays and filmed videos of the both of you making duck faces to the song before sending it to Solomon.

Lucifer somehow found out about the video and was…unamused, to say the least.

Beelzebub:

Confused asf but didn’t really care 

Decided to pull up with a plate of food and play the video of Rick Astley doing his funky little dance before he asked if you wanted to recreate it

The two of you potentially looked especially stupid when Belphie and Lucifer walked into your room to ask you something only to see you two dancing like divorced parents.

Belphie placed mugs of hot cocoa on the table before flopping back into his beanbag with his phone in hand and asking you two to “Continue please lol.”

You didn’t. Beel hauled you over his shoulder and ran out of the room before running back into his room to grab the snacks.

He ended up doing so and every time his older brother queried what the heck was going on, he just ended up sending another link to another version of Never Gonna Give You Up.

Lucifer’s last straw was the Japanese version.

He was confused over anything else but assumed that he was supposed to find it funny.

He ended up sending you a video of him with powdered sugar on his face whilst he stated: “MC…what- I love you but what-“

You spent 15 minutes on a video call with him attempting to explain the concept of Rick-Rolling before giving up and spending a ridiculous amount of hours rambling on call instead 

He ended up covering the phone screen in powdered sugar and you blared Never Gonna Give You Up just for funsies whilst he cleaned his screen.

Diavolo:

Got all excited like: “I’VE FINALLY BEEN RICK-ROLLED! YES!”

He began spamming the link to Barbatos and Lucifer much to their dismay.

Rip then he began spamming you like: “MC, LOOK! THE SONG-“

Yes honey, the song. 

You end up going over to the palace where you see him and Asmodeus of all people dancing to Never Gonna Give You Up and asking you to join in

Oji-chan Simeon couldn’t figure out how to click the link.

You had to end up going to the Purgatory Hall to teach him how to watch links and how they work.

Eventually, you did end up showing him the video, to which he asked if you wanted to have a dance party.

Oh babes…that’s really not the point.

Regardless, the two of you DID end up having a party of sorts, opting towards making soufflé together.

Solomon:

He may be a grandpa but he still knows Never Gonna Give You Up…unfortunately

Mans started a whole lecture about how he was around when the song was released and so on and so forth 🙄 we get it, Gramps, you’re old.

He decided to send you and Asmo a video of him ‘dancing’ to the music video you sent him to which Asmo had half the right mind to call the cops whilst you swore you could hear his joints creaking (that was such a self-callout 😭 it’s ok, Solomon. I’ll be the Grandma to your Gramps) 

You saw a bowl of batter moving suspiciously in the background so you had to ditch your plans of teaching Solomon how to dance and compromise by going over to the Purgatory Hall with Lucifer in order to eradicate the living matter Solomon had created.

Solomon ended up finishing his Grandpa dance whilst trying to convince Lucifer to make a pact with him. 

In the meanwhile you, Asmodeus, and Simeon cackled and filmed them only for the videos to surface on Devil Tube.

This got incredibly unhinged incredibly quickly.

You know, I could’ve done this with any other song but I had to do Never Gonna Give You Up, huh?

TW: mentions of throwing up, hospital despite the TW this is v fluffy! basically you and Meg have been penpals and you meet for the first time! but not in the way either of you would’ve imagined... 

"i think they're coming around now..."

"hello..?"

all you remember was taking a wrong turn down an empty alley on a sunny day, then you were in a cold building with an ugly looking monster holding the back of your neck.

you grasped at a knee, or maybe an arm, squeezing as your felt your stomach churn, though you kept your lips pursed together, willing for it to stay down.

"i think they're gonna be sick..."

"GOJO-SENSEI! HELP! THE CIVILIAN IS GOING TO THROW UP!"

fresh air suddenly hit your face and you threw up in a bush before everything went black again.

"-the thing up. afterwards it was pretty easy to deal with."

"you say that, but the civilian still got injured."

"hey! i didn't see you trying to catch them."

"i had my hands full already!"

your eyes were immediately assaulted with the bright sunshine as you tried to crack them open. you decidedly kept them shut and moved your lead weighted arms to cover your eyes.

"oh?"

"you awake?"

"what happened?" was all you could ask. you had tried to beat the ugly thing with-

"my clarinet!" you bolted up, eyes wide open and met with three equally wide ones (person one had a black blindfold?), but suddenly your head exploded with pain.

"go slowly. you hit your head pretty hard." a voice said as you groaned, squeezing your temples with your trembling hands. "do you remember what happened?"

"got lost walking back. woke up in a weird building and there was a funky looking thing. tried to run away, then some people turned up and the thing exploded. kinda gross."

"gross?!"

"i mean, they are super gross." 

"where are we? what's going on?" you dared to open your eyes again, more slowly, as you took in your surroundings. you were sat on the floor, leaning against a big black dog. how cute. you nuzzled your head into its fur, easing your killer headache. 

"we're in Akihabara, and i think you're concussed. we'd like to take you to a hospital." the one with white hair and the blindfold spoke with a kind smile.

"who are you?" you furrowed your brows together, feeling like you should run away because stranger danger ! but the dog was comfy, lulling you to sleep.

"ah, i'm Gojo Satoru, i'm a teacher at the Tokyo Jujutsu Tech High School, and they are my first year students. we were out on a field trip when we found you." the white haired male answered again. he was a teacher? you'd never be able to guess.

"Jujutsu Tech High School?" you repeated, the name distantly ringing bells. you turned your attention to the students. "i recognise that uniform."

"we've been in Akihabara and around Tokyo before! did you see us then?" the pink haired boy asked with a bright smile. you buried your face into the dog with a thoughtful hum.

"it's only natural we stand out you know!" amother voice voice sung.

"never in a good way." a calmer voice grumbled.

"i guess i just exude that kind of eye-catching aura."

"it's easy recognise beauty such as mine."

how did you get here? why was this happening to you? you were just performing with a marching band this morning, doing your absolute best and playing your loudest for someone. you wanted to stand out for someone. he said he'd come by but didn't. you weren't disappointed... well... you were, but you understood he had his reasons. he probably had classes because it's Thursday.

"Megumi Fushiguro?" you mumbled, the students around you falling silent.

"what did you say?"

"oh yeah, in Japan you say it the other way round don't you?" you chuckled, remembering how embarrassed you were when Megumi cared to point that out when you were discussing nicknames. "Fushiguro Megumi. think he goes to your school."

it was quiet for a moment before the students erupted into excited chatter, 

"Fushiguro! you know them?"

"why didn't you tell us!"

"what? i - i don't—" the calm voice was not calm, but his breath stuttered, "Y - Y/N?"

you had first met Fushiguro via letter in first year middle school, your middle schools partners for a penpal project. you had sent the first letter and even went through the extra effort to try and make a translation, though your characters were very messy so you made sure to also send the English original in case it was unreadable. it was nearly a month before your class got their responses, and it appeared you were the most lucky as Fushiguro's English was far better than your Japanese, and when comparing letters with your classmates, you had the most interesting response.

nearly a year and 7 more letters later, you were the only one in your class still in touch with your penpal, and with the year drawing to a close, the teachers explained that you could only send one more letter. so with a wish, you sent your phone number and downloaded several Japanese chatting apps. sure enough, 2 weeks later, there was a friend request on LINE from a Megumi Fushiguro. his profile picture was just a night sky, but you couldn't say anything, yours was sheet music. this anonymity continued indefinitely. at first you had no idea how often he was okay with you messaging him, and you added the Tokyo timezone to your clock app so you didn't message him at ungodly hours, but after a few months, Megumi would be your first thought when you saw a cute cat or something and you'd quickly snap a photo to send him. he also did the same, mostly pictures of the sky.

on Megumi's birthday, you sent a recording of you playing his favourite piece on clarinet, and for your birthday he sent you a playlist of songs he thought you would like. from then on, you continued to send him your repertoire and small recordings of your practices. then one day, when you talked to him about your most recent performance, Fushiguro asked for the link to the video. you did, but didn't tell him which clarinet player you were. he didn't ask either. you toed the border of your anonymity when you first moved to high school with a picture of you in your new marching band uniform, but from the neck down. you weren't expecting a photo back, but he surprisingly sent one back of his uniform from the neck down. his uniform looked much comfier.

then a spot for a Japanese high school exchange opened (one of the main reasons you chose to attend the high school you did), and though it was for second years, you fought and won the spot. you immediately messaged Fushiguro without checking the time in Japan. and as if that wasn't enough, the wind band in your Japanese high school were having a performance in Tokyo! Fushiguro was in Tokyo! you told Fushiguro, but then dread began to pool in your stomach. what if he didn't want to meet? you were totally fine with that. but you wanted to so badly! you remember your elation when he stopped you mid-anxious text ramble to say he would meet you.

you woke up to a white ceiling and the potent smell of disinfectant. the hospital curtain slid open to reveal a beautiful boy with deep blue hair and long eyelashes, his eyes widening at you.

"ah- good afternoon."

"good afternoon, how can i help?" you smiled, "i think you might have the wrong bay?"

"no. i- uh- do you remember what happened? do you, do you remember me?"

"um... no? i'm not really sure what you mean? i mean, i recognise your uniform- do you go to Tokyo Jujutsu Tech High School by any chance?"

"they said you would be concussed and you might have some memory problems..." the boy mumbled, "is it alright if i sit down?" your eyes darted to the curtain in panic, "ah, i'll leave the curtain open, our teacher is just signing you out the hospital, i'm Fushiguro Megumi."

"Megumi?!" you gasped, the boy smiling softly as you fumbled for words, "i- you- huh?"

"yeah... we have a lot to talk about."

"then, please! sit! i can't believe!" you covered your mouth with your hand, which did nothing to muffle your delighted squeal as he sat in the chair next to your bed. "wow. i mean, it's so nice to finally meet you in person!"

Megumi couldn't help smiling too.

"it's nice to see you too... and i'm sorry i didn't make it to your performance."

"hey, it's okay! we still met up!" you grinned brightly. Megumi then found his hands very interesting.

"and, um... your clarinet is broken..."

"that--" will be very expensive, the thought alone bringing tears to your eyes- your precious baby! it was worth more than your entire wardrobe and shoes! but you shoved that thought away until later. Megumi was here now, visiting you in hospital. "-actually, why am i here? what happened?"

Megumi thankfully didn't push the topic of your clarinet and gladly filled you in on what had happened. by the end of his explanation, you had your face buried in your hands.

"i'm so sorry you had to see that."

"it's fine, i've seen worse. besides, you were concussed, it's normal."

"still..." you whined, peeking between your fingers to find him offering you a hint of a reassuring smile. you gave in with a sigh, "i must say, that's some weird religion you have and they teach you, no offence."

Megumi chuckled, eyes distant, "you're right, it is pretty weird."

"but, um, thank you for saving me Megumi." said boy snapped back into reality very quickly, his cheeks flushing red as it dawned on you that everyone probably called him by his last name. "or do you prefer Fushiguro? am i pronouncing it right? sorry, i got used to-"

"it's fine." he uttered out, "Megumi is fine."

"what about honourifics?"

"whatever you're comfortable with."

"then... Megumi-kun? or is that too weird?"

the boy's cheeks darkened, "it's fine..."

"then you can call me Y/N-chan! then it's not as weird right?" you suggested, starting to feel the second-hand embarrassment.

"yeah." Megumi flinched too much when his phone chimed, and he hurriedly read it over. "Gojo-sensei -my teacher- said he's signed what you need to let you out. you just need to sign a few things before you go."

"right." well, the moment had to end at some point. you couldn't stay in the hospital bay forever. it was just an amazing coincidence that you had met Megumi, so you should be thankful you even had the opportunity to speak to him like this. "am i okay to move?"

"um, i'll call a nurse."

Megumi stepped out as you were examined by the nurse, and you saw him again in reception as you gave him and his teacher a thumbs up before signing the hospital forms.

"thank you very much for everything you've done. i'm so grateful. and please pass my thanks on to the other first years!" you bowed formally to the pair, Megumi flushing red while his teacher just waved you off.

"no worries. sorry about your clarinet and the concussion." the teacher responded.

"it's fine, i was always told i have a thick skull! comes in handy sometimes."

"i have to go now, but Megumi will walk you to the station, right?"

Megumi scowled at his teacher with an unreadable look in his eyes which seemed to make the teacher's smile brighten.

"well it was nice to meet you sir!" you bowed again at the adult, who nodded to you.

"nice to meet you too! hope you enjoy Japan. Megumi, be nice."

Megumi glared at the older man as he skipped away, seemingly pleased with himself for winding the younger up. Said male sighed.

"you don't have to walk me back if you're busy, i have GPS on my phone."

The boy startled at your comment, brows furrowed, before shaking his head, "it's fine, it's no trouble. i would feel better if i walked you to the station at least."

you couldn't stop the wide smile stretching on your lips, "thanks!"

"it's nothing."

you mentally thanked all the deities for letting you spend a little longer with your penpal, chatting easily as if you hadn't just met him less than 10 hours ago. by the time you had made it to the station, you had mentally prepared to part.

"so... i guess this is it?"

"yeah..."

"it was so nice to meet you- i cannot fully explain how nice this has been! even if i did spend a while in a hospital." Megumi chuckled at your words. you felt your cheeks heat up, his smile squeezing at your heart.

"i feel the same."

your train arrived.

"well. i'll message you later then?" you grinned hopefully, Megumi nodding. "hug? or do you not do those? i don't mind."

you nearly burst out laughing at the rush of emotions that flickered in Megumi's eyes- mostly panic. he blinked out his state when a giggle slipped out. he flushed red but nodded stiffly, opening his arms for you. you smiled as you wrapped your arms around him, feeling his wrap behind you too, surprisingly quickly considering how awkward he was at first. keeping it short because of the train behind you, you pulled away to find him also smiling. so he did like hugs.

"until next time?"

"yeah."

the doors shut and you waved to him as the train set off. and that was that.

your phone buzzed in your pocket.

Megumi: the school offered to pay compensation for the damages to your clarinet, so please let me know if and when you're free to go to a music shop in Tokyo to buy a new one.

1. what is the first song you remember hearing?

rooster by alice in chains! my dad used to play alice in chains and sound garden when he would pick me and my sisters up from ballet practice when i was little, like maybe 4 or 5 years old. the earliest i can remember is rooster

2. what is the first band you got into?

im going to be honest here, my dad's music taste is my music taste too, so whatever he played or made me listen to is what i listened to, so definitely kiss was the first band i got really Really into lmaooo

thats his favorite band, and he has like all the tapes and cds and some memorabilia stuff, and its what i really mainly grew up with

the first band i got into on my own was the replacements

3. do you collect any physical music?

i am SO glad you asked! i do! i collect cds, ive been collecting them for about 6 years now, and ive got a pretty good one going i think! i get my cds from thrift stores, garage sales, and friends who r getting rid of stuff

i need to reorganize desperately lmaooo

4. what is your favorite piece of music memorabilia?

my queen poster!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! a friend got it for me for my 20th birthday

5. whats your favorite concert youve ever been to?

my first and only real concert was king princess in november 2019, and it was one of the best nights of my life!!! i definitely blogged about it for a while after, but god it was one of those really unifying life experiences where its just like, im not alone, theres other lgbtq+ people like me out here and we are all together in this room watching an out lesbian perform on stage right now, its an experience i will never forget and i hold it in my heart

6. if you could see one artist who is no longer alive in concert, who would it be?

queen with freddie mercury, and alice in chains with layne staley

7. have you met any musicians?

haha so funny story, i dont want to doxx myself but my grandpa was neighbors with one of the dudes from wild cherry (play that funky music white boy) and he gave my family a backyard playset that we still have (even tho none of us are kids anymore lmaooo) from what i remember he was a really chill dude, really mellow

8. what is your go to album when youre feeling sad?

ill be honest, i dont own any, BUT but but but i DO watch queen live at the rainbow '74 like every week on youtube

its one of the greatest shows ive watched and i am so jealous every day that i wasnt alive to see it in person

albums all the way!!!!! playlists r good for trips and stuff, but i mainly use playlists as samplers to find new artists! once i find an artist i like i will listen to their entire discography

idk if its technically a deep cut, but seven seas of rhye by queen on queen, the bass is 🥵 their first album does NOT get the recognition it deserves and i will stand by that

its my sister's old cd, and we listened to it so much that the cover broke off lmaooo, led zeppelin II is v well loved and cherished
