My headcanon for Modern!Machete before he encounters (re-encounters?) Vasco is that he works in some high-powered but low-profile position for an influential and well-known multinational. Like a corporate lawyer or accountant for Apple or Volkswagon or Shell. He's very, very good at his job, his assistants and staff think he's a good boss, his boss thinks he's great, but half his colleagues can't stand him because they think he got promoted for sucking up to their boss instead of for his skills (it was for his skills). He's got exactly enough interpersonal skills to recognize the problem and not enough to fix it. He gets paid extremely well, well enough to mostly pretend that he's happy and fulfilled (he still ends up happier in the Modern!AU because his job only sucks a little instead of literally destroying him. Also because modern medicine means his medical situation is much better understood and controlled). Yes this is all just the modern equivalent to what canon!Machete's got going on but it's startling how much carries over with no changes.
Oh that's so well thought out actually, I love that.

"Being a parent is hard! You wouldn't understand!"
I'm sure it is hard, but your kids don't have the right to be throwing mud at people's windows or destroying community spaces.
"They have behavioral issues!"
Charlene, you're one deflection attempt away from me adjusting your own behavioral issues permanently. Be a grown-up, take responsibility, and tell your brats no or as a bare minimum watch them.

Sebastian (pink hair) and Cornella (blue hair) meet as children and realize "ah, that's the kid my parents told me to avoid because of business reasons" and immediately decide "hey, we're going to be best friends and not fight". Which... in the long run helps a lot in regards to their parents companies because now the parents have to play nice around their kids.
long history below lol
So they're just bffs throughout their youth and a couple years before their high school graduation, Sebastian spots a kid with messy hair who looks really nervous. Since it's early in the year, maybe the kid needs help finding somewhere? So he goes over to offer to help him to class buuuuut the guy flinches and runs away. So Sebastian is ready to report to Cornella at lunch but she slams her hands down on the table saying "I JUST SAW THE CUTEST GUY EVER". And Sebastian puts his concerns on hold until he realizes they're about to talk about the same guy.
The duo then decide "operation befriend shy guy" and spend like an entire school year getting Matis to warm up to them. Good! Except now they're seniors and STILL both pining for the underclassman (only a grade below) and they have an agreement to not pressure Matis into any weird situations about picking between them.
Matis and Sebastian like to draw though and so one day as Sebastian is vibing and sketching Cornella while stealing glances at Matis, he decides to put little hearts around her head. It's fine, it's not weird, it's totally cool. And Matis sees and comments he must really like her and while he DOES really like her it's .... not quite like that. So he laughs it off.
The two graduate and then start to train at their parents companies while attending college and the years go on. They still sometimes think about Matis and go "wonder how he's doing" "wonder if he's more outspoken now" "wonder if he'd remember us" because they're both very normal about the lingering crush they have. Cornella walks into the building she works at one day and is going directly to her office in hopes no one sees her since she's supposed to be off when she hears her name.
"I'm not here, you didn't see me and you REALLY didn't see me if my dad's asking" is her immediate response but the guy's like 'oh, sure, understood. i am interviewing someone who said he went to school with you' and so she looks over and is just. Floored. Yup, still nervous looking, definitely remembers them, he's doing fine, and he's apparently now working at her company. Fabulous.
She does say hello and then nervously excuses herself to go to her office before anyone else sees her but hey see you around good to see you bye haha... and calls Sebastian with "He's hot now" with no context. So he asks who and she's like "oh only the cutest boy to ever plague our brains for years" and Sebastian is just "wait wait, Matis ? ? YOU SAW HIM? WHERE? HELLO? Why was I not invited to see him? Why did you not video call so I can see him? WHAT DO YOU MEAN HE'S HOT" and then they scheme how to actually meet up and involve Matis. And they agree while he's definitely handsome dealing with other people, the fact he still blushes and looks nervous around them and looks to them for approval is the absolute cutest thing on the planet.

Having a job that is for a not small part communicating with customers over the phone I am still always so BAFFLED by the lack of modern phone etiquette
You're in the noisy work yard where you can't hear?? WHY ANSWER THE PHONE
You're not wearing your hearing aids and know you can't hear?? WHY DID YOU ANSWER THE PHONE
You're DRIVING?? WHY DID YOU ANSWER

I gotta say, really glad that the main criticisms for my "artists have more options" post has been that it is very USA centric and doesn't work for people in low populated areas without an art community. This has led to people giving more perspectives and options, which is always appreciated, and also because it's a completely correct criticism. Like yeah it is in fact made from the perspective of a USAmerican who lives in a highly populated state with a thriving art community especially in rural areas, you got me there, can't argue with that, gimme some fresh perspectives I love to hear that. Thank you for not making my notifications hell, and thank you for giving me more perspectives im going to give you a little kissy on the forehead
#simon says#i was worried that since it hit 10k notes#I was gonna deal with a lot of people with low confidence getting mad at me bc 'they are too much of a failure to do this how dare you'#but im so glad because it hasn't been that#it has been people bringing up good counterpoints and perspectives I appreciate hearing!#like yeah I knew it was gonna end up being US (and probably Canada) centric because I'm American and never left the country before#so my perspective on career artistry outside the country is very VERY limited to say the least#but I didn't even consider that my perspective is also skewed by where in the US I live#I live in Florida which I mentioned before and feel safe mentioning because it's a very populated state#and a majority of the economy is tourism based#so there's a pretty huge thriving art community here because there's LOTS of people visiting who want cool art for whatever reason#and LOTS of retirees with money to spend and a new florida house to decorate#and LOTS of college age kids without money but an apartment they wanna furnish so they'll buy art anyways#shows and shops and gallery work are huge here for a reason#5 percent of the entire population are snowbirds. people from the north who live here during the winter#so needless to say it's far easier to start making art selling prints and handmade magnets at a booth for a weekend event here in Florida#compared to say... rural Nebraska#so I didn't even consider that because my journey as an artist started in a state with a small but passionate and growing art community#and my journey as a PROFESSIONAL artist started in another state that has a large and thriving art community even in rural areas#that it would absolutely have an effect on my perspective#i still believe there's always more options out there than you would believe and it's always good to explore and look#and if you're able to start building an art scene in a place that doesn't have one you should#but I definitely understand some folks better when they say that it's not always accessible to do so#art careers are not about fame or social media following but rather networking I still believe that because it's true#but yeah if you're in an area where your only option IS to sell online there's no shame in that#anyways hopefully that was coherent I just woke up from a nap and now im gonna play Frog Detective for the first time#smooching you all on the foreheads gently and lovingly thank you for opening my mind and not making my inbox hell

#today i had a pianist during a rehearsal go “wow your voice you just have so much natural talent i mean some people really work for years—”#and i kinda snapped#and i was polite but also i unloaded the entire story of the last thirteen years in the cosmic joke that is my life#this lady got thirteen years of trauma in a twenty minute speed run#she Learned Things today about existential despair and the societal clusterfuck that is the Trans Experience#and how that intersects in the classical singing world in an incredibly challenging and fucked up way#and how i went from scooting under the door into a voice program with seven lessons under me#and then three years later proceeded to fling myself into a testosterone fueled vocal puberty in the midst of a professional singing degree#and lost the respect and support of most of the vocal and choir faculty because everyone thought i was committing professional suicide#if it werent for my own voice teacher (who at some point became the mother figure I'd never had) keeping me afloat i would not be here#i have c-ptsd from the shit i went through in the choir department#i had to drop out of school for a semester because my body just folded under the stress#i started getting migraines severe enough i was hospitalized twice with stroke-like symptoms#two weeks ago i had a former teacher from the early days deadname me in front of our colleagues#she tried to play it off as no big deal and it just reminded me no matter how successful i become in this field#no matter how much work i put in to overcome my past#its always going to come back and find me through people who refuse to learn respect#and somehow! im still here! im making a living in the field i trained for#how many people in my generation in the arts degree sector can say that?? by some metrics i am thriving but jesus goddamn#i clawed and fought and bit and dragged myself to where i am right now and had to find my voice TWICE and the worst part is#she meant well#the pianist i mean#and i was polite when i told my story but it was so important to me that she understood#no amount of talent would have gotten me here without sleepless nights and long hours and blood and sweat and tears and you know what#maybe i am a better person for it but dont compliment me by implying i have some inherent gift from a god i dont even believe in#dont tell me your god put me in this place to teach other people compassion#i didnt brush the door of death as many times as i did for the sake of someone else's enlightenment#its been a long 13 years. hell its been a long 2023. in the last eleven months ive had a fundamental upheaval#of everything i thought i knew and understood about myself#so yea im standing at the gate to hell looking the devil in the eye. try me bitch. ive endured worse.

I don’t know why people are always so concerned about Jiara on screen and mostly about Rudy of all things. I think we can all agree that if there’s one thing the boy has shown us in the past 4 years is the HE CAN ACT… like ✨ACT✨for real, he clearly takes his work very seriously.
I think a bit of that fear people have also comes from him always being on his own in spoilers and behind the scenes pics/videos we get but to be fair I simply think it’s just his preferred way to stay focused and in character, I remember how even during S1 in the bloopers video at the joke “a litte dicy on the 2, nevermind he’s from Alaska” everyone erupted into laughter and he just smirked and returned immediately serious ‘cause they were shooting a big scene for him.
Him not going to dinner with the cast or him preferring to stay quiet and collected on set doesn’t mean he won’t get the job done on screen. Honestly I thought we all collectively agreed that if there’s one person from the cast we should never worry about when it comes to acting, that’s Rudy!
(Also people like to point out how less he hangs out with the cast, how little of his free time he spends on social media and how much press and events he misses…LIKE HOMEBOY DIDN’T HAVE F O U R PROJECTS HE HAD BEEN WORKING ON WHILE WORKING ON OUTER BANKS COMING OUT LAST YEAR ALONE)
Rudy's a great actor, i'm not too fussed about that (especially in the way he plays JJ), but the one thing i don't agree on is the last part - homeboy may have had four different projects last year alone, but while he was shooting obx, he was in the same places the rest of the cast were, and he still had time to go on like 9 different island vacations - him not hanging out with the cast has nothing to do with him being booked and busy

ofc they shitting on keke for having a baby without being married but men are dead beat fathers with marriage papers so i don't see how that's relevant. honestly when it comes to black motherhood i truly believe nothing matters but having money and a family/friend network cuz a two parent household is quite literally meaningless if only one person is putting in the emotional labor. and if you poll a lot of married women that is indeed the case!
