Halo Moving to Unreal Engine 5 as 343 Industries Rebrands, 'Multiple Projects' in Development
Halo Studios: New Name, New Engine, New Games, New Philosophy
Ahead of the final match at today’s 2024 Halo World Championship, we saw an unexpected video. It depicted landscapes you might expect from the Halo series – Forerunner architecture jutting from dramatic landscapes inspired by the Pacific Northwest, gorgeous fields of ice, even a vista blighted and consumed by The Flood. We of course saw glimpses of the Master Chief, and his iconic enemies, even a Banshee arcing past the camera. But what we saw wasn’t a look back – this was something entirely new.
We’re entering a new dawn for Halo. Those new visuals were created using Unreal Engine 5 – and we learned that all future Halo projects will use the engine, and that multiple new games using it are in development. Alongside the engine change, the studio is seeing changes in culture, workflow, and how its teams are organized. To match that new approach, franchise stewards 343 Industries are changing their name – Halo Studios is here.
The First Step Switching from the studio’s proprietary Slipspace Engine to Unreal is a key part of that change. Previously, 343 Industries needed a large portion of its staff simply to develop and upkeep the engine its games ran on. “We believe that the consumption habits of gamers have changed – the expectations of how fast their content is available,” says Hintze. “On Halo Infinite, we were developing a tech stack that was supposed to set us up for the future, and games at the same time.”
As gaming evolves, and players increasingly point out how long it takes to see new games from their favorite series, the team at Halo Studios felt the need to react. As COO Elizabeth van Wyck puts it:
“The way we made Halo games before doesn’t necessarily work as well for the way we want to make games for the future. So part of the conversation we had was about how we help the team focus on making games, versus making the tools and the engines.”
Alongside the wider changes to how the studio is set up (which you can read more about below), adopting Unreal means Halo Studios is more able to create games with a focus that can satisfy fans – even setting up multiple teams to create different games simultaneously. But Unreal also comes with in-built benefits that would have taken years of work to replicate with Slipspace:
“Respectfully, some components of Slipspace are almost 25 years old,” explains Studio Art Director, Chris Matthews. “Although 343 were developing it continuously, there are aspects of Unreal that Epic has been developing for some time, which are unavailable to us in Slipspace – and would have taken huge amounts of time and resources to try and replicate.
“One of the primary things we’re interested in is growing and expanding our world so players have more to interact with and more to experience. Nanite and Lumen [Unreal’s rendering and lighting technologies] offer us an opportunity to do that in a way that the industry hasn’t seen before. As artists, it’s incredibly exciting to do that work.”
There’s another in-built benefit – Unreal is familiar to huge parts of the wider gaming industry. Where developers would have to spend time learning how to use Slipspace when joining 343, Halo Studios’ adoption of the industry-leading engine makes it a far smoother process to bring in new talent (and the studio is indeed hiring for its new projects now):
“It’s not just about how long it takes to bring a game to market, but how long it takes for us to update the game, bring new content to players, adapt to what we’re seeing our players want,” says Van Wyck. “Part of that is [in how we build the game], but another part is the recruiting. How long does it take to ramp somebody up to be able to actually create assets that show up in your game?”
With the move to Unreal, the on-ramp is shorter, the experience is there, and the series can grow far more quickly and organically than ever before.
Forging Ahead Of course, Halo Studios needed to be confident in the switch to Unreal – this isn’t a decision taken lightly. The team had to be sure that the first Halo games to come out of a non-Slipspace engine would look, feel, and sound right. The team began experimenting, and it resulted in a research project known as Project Foundry – the source for all the new clips we saw today.
“When we decided to do Foundry, it wasn’t, at that point, in our plan,” says Van Wyck. “But we needed to pause and – ‘validate’ is not the right word, but educate and understand what our capability is, and assess it, so we actually know we’re on the right path.
“We’ve intentionally been really quiet up to this point, but I think [today] is about just sharing where we are, what our priorities are as a studio, and where the team is. We’re really proud of what came out of Foundry.”
So what does Foundry represent? The team is clear that this is not a new game – but nor is it a traditional tech demo. It isn’t just an exploration of what’s possible with this engine – it’s a true reflection of what would be required for a new Halo game using Unreal, and a training tool for how to get there. Foundry has been made with the same rigor, process, and fidelity as a shipped game would be.
“Where this type of work’s been done historically, across the industry, it can contain a lot of smoke and mirrors,” explains Matthews. “It sometimes leads players down paths where they believe it’s going to be one thing, and then something else happens. The ethos of Foundry is vigorously the opposite of that.
“Everything we’ve made is built to the kind of standards that we need to build for the future of our games. We were very intentional about not stepping into tech demo territory. We built things that we truly believe in, and the content that we’ve built – or at least a good percentage of it – could travel anywhere inside our games in the future if we so desire it.”
Hintze goes further: “It’s fair to say that our intent is that the majority of what we showcased in Foundry is expected to be in projects which we are building, or future projects.”
And what we’ve seen of Foundry promises incredible things. Named after the Foundry within Halo’s lore – the central forge of the megastructure used to create the Halo Rings themselves – the project saw the team set out to create three distinct biomes in the style of Halo. The goal was, as Matthews puts it, to make something old, something new, and something truly alien.
For something old, we see a biome inspired by the Pacific Northwest – a staple of the series – but in dramatic new form. Waterfalls crash over mountains, a running creek becomes the site of a tableau pitching the Chief against two Covenant Elites, and the team pushed Unreal to include as much foliage as technically possible.
For something new, we see the Coldlands location, a region locked in a deep freeze, with snowdrifts covering plateaus, and ice reflecting what’s above and refracting what’s below. And for something alien, we see the Blightlands, a brand new take on a Halo location – a world consumed by the parasitic Flood. The express purpose of the Blightlands was to see how this new-look Halo team could push the world itself farther than previous Halo games – the results speak for themselves.
Even the familiar looks new in Foundry. The Chief’s armor has been modelled with extreme care, down to individual panels on his combat gloves. An Elite’s energy sword now feels less like a solid object and more reflective of the name – a crackling swoosh of dangerous energy. The aim wasn’t just to push the studio, but the engine itself – Foundry is designed to do things that we haven’t seen in games using Unreal across the industry, Halo began its life as a graphical showcase for the original Xbox – the goal is to make that so again.
Halo Studios has worked closely with Unreal’s creators, Epic Games, to ensure they can reach that lofty goal.
“Halo is such an incredible franchise and it’s awesome to see Halo Studios already pushing the boundaries of Unreal Engine 5,” said Bill Clifford, Vice President and General Manager of Unreal Engine at Epic Games. “We’re honored to support the Halo team in realizing their creative visions through Unreal Engine. Project Foundry’s work demonstrates how they can bring Halo to life with beautifully detailed, uncompromised worlds.”
Of course, the soul of Halo isn’t just in how it looks, but how it feels – the intrinsic dance of its combat, the thud of the weapons, and the sense that you’re inhabiting the Master Chief’s armor. While Foundry may be a primarily visual project, Halo Studios is deeply invested in retaining the essence of what players love about Halo.
“I think it’s pretty well known that [switching engine] has been a topic that the studio has thought about for a long, long time,” says Van Wyck. “[The release of] Unreal Engine 5 was when we felt like we could make Halo games that respect and reflect the true soul of Halo while also being able to build games that can deliver on the scale and ambition of content that players want.”
“The spirit of Halo is more than just the visuals,” agrees Matthews. “It’s the lore. It’s the physics. Playing as the Chief, you’re this huge tank of a soldier – it’s the way that he moves, he feels. We’re all really obsessed about what our players love about Halo. We’re constantly listening to this feedback – and that’s at the core of any initiative like Foundry, or any intention that the studio has about how we move forwards.”
“We’re thinking about the intangibles,” Hintze adds. “The interaction with the Master Chief, or your Spartan, or the enemies. We are very careful about the decisions we’re making in that space – down to the precision and authenticity of the weapons, the authenticity of the animations. There are a list of nuances which we use to verify that we’re on track.”
Beyond the Visor So, let’s talk about what’s coming beyond Foundry. As you might expect, the team isn’t talking about exactly what those new games will be right now – we’re at the beginning of this new chapter, not the final stages, and it’s fair to say that a new Halo game isn’t imminent. Halo Infinite will still be supported through the Slipspace Engine – you can expect more Operations, and updates to its Forge mode. In esports, Year 4 of the Halo Championship Series, using Halo Infinite, has just been announced. But in the background, the next steps for Halo will be taken.
The quietness is by design. Hintze makes clear that the priority right now is on doing the work, not simply talking about it:
“One of the things I really wanted to get away from was the continued teasing out of possibilities and ‘must-haves’. We should do more and say less. For me, I really think it is important that we continue the posture which we have right now when it comes to our franchise – the level of humility, the level of servitude towards Halo fans.
“We should talk about things when we have things to talk about, at scale. Today, it’s the first step – we’re showing Foundry because it feels right to do so – we want to explain our plans to Halo fans, and attract new, passionate developers to our team. The next step will be talking about the games themselves.”
What is clear is that, yes, it’s Halo games – plural – in development right now. Where Halo Infinite saw practically the entire studio focused on a single, evolving project, Halo Studios has recalibrated:
“We had a disproportionate focus on trying to create the conditions to be successful in servicing Halo Infinite,” says Hintze. “[But switching to Unreal] allows us to put all the focus on making multiple new experiences at the highest quality possible.”
A major part of this shift has been in reorganizing the structure of Halo Studios as a whole, in order to give development teams what they need to make something new.
“At the end of the day, if we build the games that our players want to play, that’s how we’ll be successful,” explains Van Wyck. “That’s what should motivate what we build. That’s also what this structure has done – we want the people that are day-in-day-out making the games to be the ones to make the decisions on the games.”
The team will also be seeking more input from outside the studio on those decisions:
“We’re seeking earlier and earlier, wider and wider feedback from our players,” she continues. “We started that with The Master Chief Collection, and carried that on with Halo Infinite, and we want to do it even more for our next projects. At the end of the day, it’s not just how do we evaluate, it’s how do our players evaluate it?”
343 Industries was founded to create Halo games but the impression I get is that, in its new incarnation as Halo Studios, the studio has been retooled to put the focus entirely on that goal – without distraction, without impediment, to create better games with players’ hopes and wishes at the heart of the endeavor.
“You asked why we consider this as a new chapter,” says Hintze. “We want a singular focus. Everyone is in this place is here to make the best possible Halo games.”

Blood- John Price NSFW
Based on a request:
Can I make a request of Mafia AU with a hint of enemy to lovers and smut please? Mafia King Price x Mafia Queen Fem reader, who are rivals. Both tend tends to rile each other up whenever they have a mafia council meeting and everybody can sense the sexual tension between them. Thank you !! ❤️❤️🫶🏻
F!Reader, mafia au, enemies to lovers?, mafia queen!reader, smut, 18+, mafia king!Price, rivals, sexual tension, P-in-V, unprotected sex
"R/N, the meeting will begin in twenty minutes." Your brother said. You found it absurd, having to go to meetings with people like John Price, who gave a shit if everyone wanted a treaty. He messed with your family and for that, he will pay. "I'll be there, okay?" You say, not looking at him once but rather out the window of your penthouse, the city living a normal life, whilst you and a handful of mafias would decide to either join the other or let hell loose.
In the meeting, Price sat there, other leaders and advisors near. Suspension at its highest. Price and your family have been rivals for decades, never letting the other rest, blaming killings and failed cargo on the other. You walk into the room, heels filling the void the silence had created. The men all stop and look at you, Price rolls his eyes, "Of course, you had to make an entrance."
"Quit talking, John." You do not once look at him. Everyone leaves the room, only those that had to converse stayed behind. From Mexico, Italy, the U.S.A, Brazil, Russia, England and Asia, all gathered and ready to talk. You never trusted Price, he is a narcissist and a horrible liar. Always talking shit but you always brought hell upon him. "Let's start, so, Russia and Mexico, I see you two want to become friends, what's the reason behind that?"
"Ayuda commercial de nuestra mercancia," the man spoke.
"It will benefit not just us but you, R/N" the other Russian man spoke, earning a nod from you. The meeting went smoothly, except for when the reason for the meeting was brought up. "Now, what about us all joining forces?" The asian man spoke, you look at him, waiting for someone to say a word. Except, in this, you were the key to either make all mafias strong or make them crumble. "Well,I wouldn't oppose to it, except, I don't think I would want to work with John."
"You know damn well it wasn't my fault!" His fist coming into contact with the table. The other men don't dare question you and your motives for not working with him. "You know damn well it was your fault!" You growl. "It was never the intention of my father-" he tries to excuse the issue. "My father and mother are dead John! All because your family was petty and shady over work!" You bite back.
The men around the room stay silent, tension fills the room. "Now, if we make this deal, I will need either all to side with me and together our groups will be powerful or I'll make sure each one crumbles to its ruin." You lean back in your seat, knowing you had the upper hand in this. John scoffs and leans back, watching the men that he was having drinks with last night side with the woman he despises. Common friends, common hatred. What a perfect match made in hell.
"We, will make that partnership, R/N, but you must ensure those feud you two have will intervene with our plans." The asian man says. "I'll make sure of that, now if you excuse me I must go." You stand up and the other men do too, they all shake your hand except Price. You nod and walk away, your team waiting for you on the other side of the door. Hours later, your brother walks into your beautiful home, "R/N, what the fuck did you do at that meeting?!" He was clearly annoyed at something you had no clue on.
Eventually he explains that the other mafias have parted ways with Price and have only made an alliance/treaty with you and each other. You were unaware of this, making sure to contact them all and set the record straight. Price walks into your home, pushing past guards and eventually finding your office. "R/N, we must talk."
You nod at your brother and he leaves. "What is it?" you sit down and pour yourself a glass of scotch. "Why the fuck did you leave me and my people in the shadows! We had a goddamn agreement, we stop the feud and make his arrangement." He leaned forward in his seat, veins becoming prominent and his voice hoarse. "I told you years ago John, I will not let you rest, not after their deaths!"
"THEY ARE FUCKING DEAD, THIS IS OUR FUCKING PROBLEM NOW, US NOT THEIRS!"
"Your father killed my parents, put them on display at my 20th birthday, my dead fucking parents for all to see!" You stand up and look at him, "If you want feud between our people and the arrangement to also have you added, then you apologise and accept my terms."
But that wasn't easy on him, he'd had to give up the western border, 63% of the income from the easter border would go to your people and he'd have merge your and his people, something that made you still the head of command. All of what his grandfather worked for down the drain for you to own and have, he sighs and looked at your hips then lips. You drink the scotch, unaware of the stare he was giving you. "You look hot when you're mad." he comments. You roll your eyes and point at the door, "out."
Days after that encounter, one of your corporation buildings was attacked, Price got the news seconds before his plane took off, he stopped the pilot and was escorted to the building. You were talking with your men when you spotted him, "Did you fucking do this?" you accused him as you walked to him. But that was the thing, he wouldn't do this, he was a grown man who knows the best way to fix issues is to talk. "R/N, don't you think I'd be a dick move if I did so? For fucks sake, we are about to be the largest mafia in the country, I don't want to ruin our stuff."
He noticed a blood stain on your shirt, "what happened?" he held your arm, looking at the stain. "Nothing." you answer. "C'mon, let's go." He dragged you to his car, told the driver to get off and you and him were on the way to his private home. "Why are you doing this, John?" You turn to him. "I am not going to give a reason but I will make sure you get checked out for any potential injuries." His eyes on the road the whole time.
Once at his home and after he made sure you had no injuries, he sat you down, "Look, I know we don't have the best history-"
"Damn right we don't." you cut him off.
"-but I wouldn't do that, not to you." he finished.
You stay silent, his hands at your hips, gaze fixed on you. "I'll find the bastard that did that and kill him." it was not just because of the building but because your life was a risk and lately he hated how much he has been looking out for you. Why does he care? Because for some reason, he wouldnt want you to be hurt. The day you parents' dead bodies were displayed as an act of vengeance from his father, he was the one who cut the lights off, making his guards escort the bodies elsewhere.
You have been so filled with hatred and the thirst for revenge that you have been blind to not notice all the small acts of kindness he has done for you. "Dad, you didn't have to do that!" he told his father. "They deserved it." his father responds. "Maybe, but it was her birthday dinner, you have set war on, you killed her parents and you paraded their dead bodies for not just her but everyone to see!"
Years later, Price still hates that day, how her saw you change from a happy and free woman to who you are today. If only things were different, he and you would be off into an arranged marriage and he would enjoy it. All along, he has felt something for you that no one else can compare.
"R/N," his hands tracing circling on your hips, you look at him, both of you leaning in. "I have been wanting to do this since we were young." he cups your face and kisses you. It was so gentle and sweet, like a first kiss that will be felt for years to come. It wasn't John Price in that kiss, it was Johnny, the boy you had a crush on as a little girl. Your legs wrapped around his waist, he holds you close, carrying you to his room and not once breaking the kiss.
He lays you on the bed, kissing your neck, pulling your shirt. Hands on your chest, letting them feed on your warmth. He nibbles on the soft skin, earning a satisfied noise from you. By some point and some laughter, your clothes is on the floor. He wanted this moment to be more than special. He parted your legs, fingers teasing your wet cunt, his spit mixing with your cunt, making his scent known. He looks up at you, flushed face as if he was your first. His kisses trail back up, making sure to be delicate.
Slowly, he slides himself into you, you moan and grip his back. "fuck," you say before he hushes you. "Just relax and open for me okay, love?" His voice so soft. You nod and moan more as he slowly increases the speed of his thrusts. Getting used to his size was not an easy task, he was bigger and thicker than any of the other men you've been with. You shut your eyes and let the passion, lust and pleasure fill the room. He kisses your lips, tongue encoring your mouth, wanting to not leave a corner of his new heaven untouched. He bites into your neck but not enough that he breaks the skin.
A hand on his back as the other grips the sheets. You moans become louder, his hips thrusting faster, his cock deeper in you. Pre cum leaking from him, he wants to last longer but as his fantasy is being fulfilled it's impossible to last long. His thrusts become more aggressive, skin contact echoing on the walls of the room. Scratch marks on his back to prove that what you two have is better than any relationship he has ever had. You might be his enemy but in that moment you are the drug to keep him alive.
Moans and groans from you both, letting the walls understand it's not a cat fight but rather a pleasure. Hours of pleasure turned to you leaking him warm cum from you. He smiles and looks at you, "you are such a good girl for me, look at that." he touches the cum with his fingers and brings it to you, making you lick it. His fingers in your mouth, making you savour such taste. You smile and kiss him.
Soon after the once rivals, wanting the other dead, now lay in bed, making plans for the long run. From kids to adults, enemies to lovers, friends to husband and wife. It is known you are the perfect match made in hell.

Hellboy & his world
this is for people who dont know anything about hellboy..!
Hellboy is a series created by Mike Mignola, which began in 1994 with the four-issue story arc Seed of Destruction. The story begins in 1944 and establishes his origin story as a hellbound human-demon hybrid, summoned to Earth by Nazis during World War 2 to be used as a weapon against the Allies. This, of course, didn't work out as planned, as the operation was intercepted by a contingent of paranormal experts, soldiers, and the Torch of Liberty, an analogue for Captain America.
Upon finding the infant, a young Professor Trevor Bruttonholm adopts it and names him Hellboy. We also get a sneak peek of Rasputin (yeah, that Rasputin), who is the Nazi's own paranormal expert, and the one who performed the ritual that summoned Hellboy.
Skipping forward a year, the Professor establishes an international organization to combat and research paranormal threats to the world. This group is the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (BPRD), and nearly every one of our protagonists will be a member of it at one point or another. Hellboy himself is granted honorary human status by the UN, and joins the BPRD in 1952 (having grown at an accelerated rate to the size of a young adult). These early years of his are collected in an ongoing series called 'Hellboy and the BPRD', and they all take place before the rest of the Seed of Destruction story.
Going forward again, we get to 1992, and the Professor goes missing during an expedition in the Arctic. He resurfaces two years later, but is tragically killed in front of Hellboy by a mutant frog creature. This begins a chain of events which leads to a confrontation with a seemingly immortal Rasputin, who reveals to Hellboy that he is destined to end the world.
During this story, we are introduced to two members of the BPRD who aid Hellboy in his fight against Rasputin, and who are close friends of his.
Liz Sherman, a pyrokinetic human with a tragic past,
-- and Abe Sapien, a friendly fishman of unknown origins.
Now, all of this probably sounds familiar. If you've seen Guillermo Del Toro's first Hellboy movie, you'll have seen something close to this exact story, yet there are several key differences. In the movie, Rasputin is the ultimate Big Bad of the story, and there is only a hint of something greater behind the scenes-- but in the comic, it is explicitly stated that he is serving an extra-dimensional being known as the Ogrdu Jahad, the Seven Beasts, also known as the Serpent, the Dragon, and so on. He even summons one of the Serpent's offspring- known as an Ogdru Hem.
The Ogdru Jahad are intrinsic to understanding the story of Hellboy. Their origin goes back to the creation of the world itself, and most of the enemies of the BPRD are either wanting to summon it to end the world, or harness its power for their own benefit. The Hem themselves are a complicated topic. While most of the time they are physical monsters you can fight, they are capable of influencing the world in more subtle ways.
There's also some key characters lacking in every one of the Hellboy films. One that I find quite insulting to leave out is Kate Corrigan.
She plays a supporting role to the rest of the cast, and has several important moments with Hellboy and the others. She also has a few stories in which she plays a much more active role, such as the Wolves of St. August.
There's also a few characters that get their own spinoff titles that delve more into the past of the series, like Lobster Johnson, Sir Edward Grey, or Sledgehammer 44.
Going back to the threats out protagonists face, there are others that come from some unexpected places. Hecate, who plays both the role of antagonist and supporting character of Hellboy, comes from the more mythological side of the world. There are mad scientists, monsters from other realms unrelated to the Ogdru Jahad, secretive cults, vampires, fae creatures, ghosts, zombies, and more.
If I were to name one in particular that poses as big of a threat as the Ogdru Jahad, it would be the denizens of Hell and their forces. Demons, imps, humans who have made pacts with them, and the Dukes that rule over them all. Hellboy is half demon, after all.
Oh yeah. There's also the aliens. They kinda look like Abe, but they're unrelated to any of the goings on of Earth, and are simply monitoring the situation.
Last but not least, there's the Right Hand of Doom. This hulking mass of stone that been attached to Hellboy from birth is not only one of his most useful assets- for pummeling his enemies- but also a curse he carries everywhere with him. It is an iconic part of the character and the mythos surrounding him, and it plays a massive role in his unwilling fate to end the world. The nature of it and how he came to have it are explored in detail throughout the many series Mignola has written.
...and with that, this is the end of a very long post about a very long series. Hopefully it'll be the longest post on this blog. Thank you to anyone who actually read all this, and I hope you stay to learn more about the world of Hellboy!
#hellboy#mike mignola#bprd#comics#hope this isnt too boring. im glad tumblr allows so many images on posts nowadays#itd be unreadable without pics to break up the walls of text#idk if this reads well its been a long time since ive done informative writing

Russ’s dialogue on base:
It’s a common accident. You’re throwing Pikmin with wild abandon…and then accidentally chuck a bomb out there too. It’s a terrible tragedy, but it’s commuted repeatedly by amateurs who haven’t yet mastered the art of a calm composure.
The rapid and reliable accumulation of sparklium is a task that Collin and the captain constantly pester me about. So I’m adding a sensor to the Treasure Gauge that amplifies the smallest of signal spikes. That should keep them at bay!
Throwing a Pikpik Carrot will often distract a creature. If they eat it, they’ll be paralyzed temporarily! If I were in your space boots and encountered a new creature, I’d toss them a carrot before engaging or rushing them.
Wandering around aimlessly while exploring an unfamiliar landscape is not intelligent behavior. It’s the opposite of that. Thanks to a new lens that has a wider field of vision, the Survey Drone is now ready for practical use in the field!
Pikmin are known to use collective behavior as a survival strategy. The success of the group benefits them all. The Charging Horn mak3s use of this habit, stimulating the reward systems in the Pikmin’e brains using sound waves!
Ah, the Emergency Kit. This was the first item I prototyped after joining the Rescue Corps. Such fond memories…The original request was to make it easy enough for even Dingo to use. After MANY adjustments, I’ve finally done it!
Science is limitless! But you can’t build something out of nothing. When I’m out of raw materials, I rely on components. But those run out too! I usefully replenish my stock by poking around the ship’s cargo. Then I’m back at it in the Lab!
There are two elements to considering when designing a tool that increases physical impact—strength and number! The Triple Threat focuses on the latter in its design concept. That is to say, more hands equals more punches! Kee-hee!
When it comes to tracking, it’s imperative to think of your target first and foremost as a source of heat. The Trackonator is designed to do the same. The mechanics it employs to detect a target heat source are top-notch!
The element of time is key to consider when throwing a Mine or Trackonator and waiting for it to explode. Once you have a firm grasp of the timing differentials, it’s easier to aim for and defeat ONLY your target creatures.
When an electric current passes through an organism, it contacts uncontrollably. This is also called being electrocuted. The ingenious trick of the Lightning Shock is how it lowers the electrical resistance of a target an instant before it attacks!
For Pikmin, and really all living things, there’s not much that can be done to increase resistance to certain attacks. An Ice Blast will freeze any Pikmin that’s not an Ice Pikmin, and a Lightning a Shock will electrocute all but Yellow Pikmin. So, when using a bomb, always be aware of the various Pikmin types that are in your surroundings before taking action!
Not everyone possesses the unlimited stamina of Dingo, and increasing one’s speed is often hindered by the body itself. Rush Boots increase stamina limits by redirecting the kinetic energy generated into a form that resupplies stamina levels,
When a life-form’s alive, it’s fundamentally impossible to completely inhibit the minute vibrations it continuously emits. The Mine is a device that uses this fact to its advantage. It detects an organism’s nano-level vibrations, then explodes!
Our knowledge of Pikmin ecology is still rudimentary, but they’ve been observed in two fundamental states: active and idle. The Idler’s Alert is a sound-wave induction device that can activate Pikmin in their lazy— I mean…idle state!
As Rescue Officers, our bodies are in a constant state of stress due to our exposure to harsh external environments. Of course, the additional physical training can help, but the artificial enhancement the Tuff Stuff provides us also essential!
The latent heat released when changing a state of matter can, when properly applied, lower temperatures in an instant. The principal behind the Ice Blast is essentially this: removing heat equals freezing. It’s so simple, isn’t it?!
#I hated writing all this down it all sounds like a sponsor read#sorry Russ#I just wish he’d actually have a conversation and not advertise stuff I already have#pikmin#russ pikmin#pikmin 4 spoilers

Hey, it's the final stretch!! Check out some of the talksprites I've been hard at work drawing over the past month- There are 48 hours left in the Entropic Float 2 Kickstarter where YOU TOO can get involved in all kinds of fun things! A download key to a soon-to-be-released DLC joins the download key for Entropic Float 2, available on its own at the $5 tier and together at the $15 tier- A $20 value compared to the planned retail for both separately! These two tiers also get you votes on two different character designs! If you can't afford any reward tier, but you can toss me a dollar? You're still supporting a trans and disabled gamedev, so that's winning too!
If you can swing it a little higher, rewards abound- Commissions at discounts from my usual rates (I could rush it through if you want one as a holiday gift for somebody~), physical merch, and even options for your OC to join the world of Entropic Float, from a simple cameo up to integration as a significant character (following a long discussion to determine where they best fit into the narrative of course~).
Here in these last two days, we're just $271 USD short of our second stretch goal- Creating an actual song for in-universe band Renfield Future! Being able to do this would have many benefits- Bringing the band and the main character from it to life, giving us an option to use in trailers without going through the headache of licensing existing songs, and further supporting one of our amazing voice actors~
I should also note, for the tumblr crew specifically: Midway through running this Kickstarter, I very suddenly lost my day job. I'll be okay, I'll manage- But making a game is expensive, and the more I get on the Kickstarter, the more of my own money gets to stay dedicated to bills and groceries. My two main expenses outside of living ones are game development and stocking my etsy shop (As it takes at least 2 years for most small/indie businesses to start turning any kind of profit). Since every dollar to the Kickstarter is a dollar I get to hold onto for my rent, I'm going to go out on a limb and say supporting it constitutes mutual aid for this transgender bunny boy who's too disabled to work more than part-time out of the house and too autistic to hold down the part-time jobs it gets.
Reaching this point has been truly amazing- And now's the time to double down! If you haven't pledged yet, don't miss your chance, and if you have, share the project far and wide! Help us make the world of Entropic Float better, one game at a time, and thank you, as always, for reading!

The bad batch, Gregor, Howzer, Rex, Wolffe, and Cody all go to a Hibachi place. Who gets Hibachi, who gets sushi, who gets noodle bowls, who sings every time someone in the restaurant has happy birthday sung to them, and who gets miso soup? (Obviously they can all choose multiple things.)
So... many... That poor restaurant...
Let's go down the list!
Wrecker: He'd sing, he'd get Hibachi, and sushi, and noodle bowls and miso soup, and the wait staff love him too much to even mind the mess he makes, and love him even more when he helps clean up after (he may be messy at home, but dude knows not to do that shit in someone elses' place)
Tech: Miso Soup (it actually has been found to have several health benefits), and Hibachi, that way he can ensure everything is cooked correctly - plus he secretly really likes the show. He does not sing. Unless you get him drunk.
Crosshair: Noodle Bowl - it's quick and simple, and has all the nutrients and calories he needs without a ton of fuss. He'll throw utensils at anyone who sings and he'll make eye contact while he does it (except Omega of course)
Echo: He'd get the miso, too, but, depending on how good it is, might not finish if it's too salty. I think he'd initially go for the noodle bowl, but, if he's in a good mood, he'll do Hibachi just for the fun. The singing though? ... yeah, not likely to happen
Hunter: Sushi - the flavors are more subtle, but still incredible, and he'd rather stand a bit back during the Hibachi shenanigans - just a bit too much going on for him to relax during it. He doesn't sing initially, but them Omega gives him a look and reluctantly joins in
Omega: She get Hibachi because that's so COOL, but wants to try all of the things, so ends of just snacking off of everyone's plates. And oh yes. She sings. And when she learned what the song means, she then insists and "figuring out" everyone's birthdays so they can start celebrating them for each other, too!
Gregor: Oh Hibachi all the way! And he steals a nibble from the plates of whoever's around him when they're not looking, but he can't not giggle while he does it so always gets caught. And proceeds to finish putting the stolen food in his mouth anyway with a big grin. He sings loud and off-key and makes everyone smile so damn brightly because of it
Howzer: Yes to Miso - it's healthy and a good appetizer. He'd get the noodle bowl, but he'd also get a few bits of sashimi - nothing too crazy. He doesn't sing initially but, like Hunter, yields beneath Omega's insistence.
Rex: Another one for Hibachi - he can't help but think how much Fives would have loved it, and maybe the quiet evening could do with just a pinch of controlled chaos. He does not sing. Guys. Really. Come on, we came here to relax, not announce our presence to the whole damn restaurant.
Wolffe: He'll get some sushi as an appetizer and the Hibachi for his main course. It's rare he gets to indulge, so he's going to take advantage, but like hell is he going to let on how much he's actually enjoying the food. Until the kriffing singing starts... He gives Gregor the meanest glare before yielding with a disappointed eye-roll and getting back to his food.
Cody: This man has learned to appreciate the finer things in life, so he's going for pure sushi. He'll even get the weird stuff no one can pronounce so he can recommend them to Obi later. And yes. He sings. Much to everyone's shock and Gregor's absolute delight. His voice isn't loud and boisterous, but he lends a subtle undertone to it and unabashedly meets the eyes of anyone gawking at him (Obi taught him)

Detective Nagai had a terrible day. A day that had started with a diffuse ache in his abdomen and his heart palpitating at a mile an hour when he woke up an hour before his alarm from a nightmare he could not remember.
Seeing as it was pointless to go back to sleep, he cursed himself and the entire squad out, a plethora of creative insults he would, most likely, never voice out loud. Then he went to brew a cup of coffee. He would have loved to say it immediately jolted him out of his stupor and into an active, motivated, pre-case solving state, but of course it didn’t. Rest assured, he was mercifully saved the one benefit of caffeine that he was betting on. The only change he experienced was a familiar burn in his throat, his reflux’s friendly way of reminding him that it was planning on becoming a permanent resident.
What a bother. Kei had always hated the concept of roommates.
He didn’t own a car, neither did he drive- not, as some might assume, because of not passing the ridiculously simple theoretical exam (He had, with a stellar score of 110% , the bonus resulting from giving himself extra credit for a formatting and spelling error he noticed). No, he simply chose not to, because frankly, the idea of riding into oncoming traffic on four shaky wheels with nothing but steel-aluminium walls that dented at the lightest scratch and a sorry excuse for an airbag keeping him from certain death, did not seem very appealing.
(And perhaps also, because the look his driving instructor had given him after his most recent attempt at the practical exam had etched himself in his soul forever. Sure, Kei might have avoided the head-on collision with the HAYAKAWA CIGARETTES truck, but the terror in the man’s eyes and the scathing indictment that followed made him wonder if actually getting mowed over by 4 tons of vehicle would have been the better alternative.) Ah well, now he would never know.
Thankfully, there were other people in his squad. Some compensated for their mediocre cognitive ability with a surprisingly solid physical skill set. One example was Nakano Kou, the overly-energetic detective who had declared himself Kei’s best friend two weeks after the latter had joined. It had been an unanimous decision Kei had interestingly never been consulted on. But he could live with that, he supposed. Nakano could be incredibly annoying, but he did give Kei rides to work, which was appreciated.Especially , on a day as frosty as this one, where Kei would have rather stabbed himself than get up an hour earlier to spend his precious pre-work time scratching ice off car windows. Nakano, thankfully, seemed to have no such problem.
He was even punctual when he pulled up to Kei’s apartment that morning, dressed in his signature yellow parka.
“Good morning!“ he cheered loudly, turning down the Black Eyed Peas‘ “I GOT A FEELIN“ that was blaring in the background at Kei’s raised eyebrow. Orange strands as unkempt as ever, one hand on the steering wheel, he held out a cup emblazoned with yet another caffeine franchise that people with lack of a spine might pledge addiction to.
“Kei”, the cup read.
He grinned as Kei got into the car, strapping on his seatbelt: “You gotta call shotgun, Nagai.”
“I’m not saying that every single time.” Kei sighed, “And I don’t want coffee.”
“That’s hot chocolate.”
Kei narrowed his eyes: “Without caffeine?”
“Yes, yes! Without!” Nakano said, lifting his left hand in an idiotic gesture of sincerity.
“Careful.” Kei snapped, not wanting his idiotic attempts at being genuine to endanger them in the morning traffic.
“Dude, chill, I’m still parking.” Nakano said, conveniently ignoring how Kei had told him to never call him dude under any circumstances in their first week working together. He revved the engine to life and then, placing a hand on the back firmly of Kei’s headrest and turning to look behind himself, maneuvered them backwards and then out of their parking spot. The close proximity of his teammate’s fingers to his neck and the self-assured, almost cocky way with which his colleague steered them back into traffic did nothing for him, Kei reminded himself, gripping tightly around the cardboard wrapper. He let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding and chased away a flicker of regret when Nakano’s hand dropped from its place on the headrest, fingers curling back around the steering wheel.
“You know, a “thank you, how was your weekend” wouldn’t kill you.” his colleague said, side-eying the stiff way he stiffly occupied the passenger seat.
“Just drive.” Kei grumbled, managing to avoid the eye-contact he was afraid would sell him out.
“Screw yourself, seriously.” Nakano said, fondness tinged with annoyance, as he shifted into third gear. Thus started their morning bickering- the only way, Kei realized, to properly wake him up.
They managed to get to work a good fifteen minutes before their morning meeting at 8 am. Which was good, because arriving any later than the designated time would be a surefire way to draw the wrath of their captain.
“Good morning, Sarge!” Nakano cheerfully greeted Sergeant Hirasawa, who was already sat at his desk, two yoghurt cups stacked in front of him.
“Good morning, detective Nakano.” Hirasawa replied. Age was not lost on the seargant, who combed back his hair in an effort to mask the balding patch, tucking his glasses behind his ears. Calloused hands spoke of many years in the service, but in the seargeant’s case, he had followed an unconventional career path, having spent his years before training in the Academy as a bodyguard of sorts. “Well, hired gun is more like it.” the Sarge had shared during one evening during a post-working gathering a pub. Manabe, one of the four guys that had been employed about the same time as the Seargeant and who seemed to have known him for even longer, chuckled dryly at that. Kei hadn’t bothered asking what the vague job description meant, he could put two and two together. Unlike Nakano, who had stared at Hirasawa with a quizzical look. Before the words “What’s a hired gun” could leave his mouth, Kei had grabbed him by the back of his parka and dragged him to the bar.
“The next rounds of drinks are on you.” he said sullenly, as his colleague complained loudly about the rough treatment. There must have been something in Kei’s eyes however, as Nakano dropped the topic pretty much immediately. When he came back carrying an armful of beers, their table cheered, detective Suzumura and detective Kuroki slapping him on the back appreciatively. Nakano preened under the attention and was engrossed in a lively conversation within minutes.
Kei nipped at his rum-filled beverage, grimacing at the bitter taste and cursing out the bartender for clearly misjudging his soda to alcohol ratio preference. But just as he was about to call it an early night, Sergeant Hirasawa slid on the stool next to him. “So, I’ve heard some impressive things about you, Detective Nagai.”
“Which would be?” Kei asked, skeptically. The Sergeant laughed at his open mistrust. Well, someone tells me you are planning to become a captain of a squad yourself someday. Your stellar scores graduating from the Academy and your track record of solved cases also speak for themselves.”
Kei did his best to not feel too flattered under the praise. “That is, if I make it that far. I’ll have to pass the Sergeant’s exam first.. It would be a fool’s error to rest simply because of previous success I had.” He took a sip, and forced himself not to avoid the Sergeant’s gaze, which seemed downright friendly and empathic. Sometimes, he had to remind himself not everyone he ever worked with had ill-intent. But then again, he had to keep an eye open for the possibility.
“I still have a long road ahead of me.” He concluded a conversation that he felt was becoming too personal for a work acquaintance.
“Spoken as a true contender for the position of Captain would.” Seargeant Hirasawa said, and Kei attempted not to startle too much when he amicably slapped his back, and in a tone, that sounded too genuine to be false said, “I’m rooting for you, Detective Nagai.”
Well, at least, someone was rooting for him. Kei felt as though he was not having the same luck with the new Captain that had been assigned to their district.
Captain Tosaki Yuu was not one for humor, or slacking, or any other form entertainment that would have made the arduous work days in the precinct more bearable. Kei would have been fine with that. Instead, it was Detective Nakano’s morale that took a major hit when their new commanding officer introduced himself and how he planned to run the precinct. However, it took him only a few weeks to win even the sour-faced captain over in that strangely charming way of his. This didn’t necessarily mean that Detective Nakano didn’t still make a fool of himself- he did- or that the Captain had never yelled at him for his tardiness or unserious attitude – he had – but it did meant that even tall, pale, consistently stressed Captain Tosaki begrudgingly accepted the cheerful detective as vital member of his squad.
Which caused Kei even more of a headache because he himself wasn’t having any of that luck.
He had tried every strategy from mute respect to blank sincerity to disinterest to word-by-word conduct of corporate advancement guidelines but he kept clashing with the Captain more often than he had probably should. Conflict with superiors was not a favorable strategy, that was what he’d learned in the Academy. Sometimes, he laid awake at night, ruminating on the possibility that it could be a death sentence for his career that had not even properly begun. It was simply that he, Detective Nagai, had his own way of doing things which had served him well over years in service, and was only the slightest bit aggrieved at the fact of being presented with a new Captain that seemed to micromanage his every move.
If he was available to speak with at all.
As Nakano settled into his desk, finishing his coffee and chatting with the Seargeant, Kei flicked his eyes over to the Captain’s office. At the desk right in front sat Naomi, his personal secretary, who spent 1/3 of her time relegating calls, another third being mean and the final third playing Flappy Bird on her phone.
“Sorry, Captain’s not available right now.” she warbled into the speaker, examining her sapphire acrylics with genuine interest, just as Captain Tosaki came into view behind her.
“Who’s that?” the Captain asked sharply, flanked as usual by his right-hand Sergeant Shimomura, who stood stoically next to him.
To Naomi’s credit, she was used to his unannounced entrances and didn’t as much as startle, left alone appear guilty being caught blatantly avoiding her job.
She swiveled around in her desk chair, blowing maroon strands out of her eyes, perfectly manicured fingers held over the mouthpiece.
“Oh, just Ogura from Forensics.” she said, batting her eyelashes and dragging out the “a” with an annoyed sigh, “I told him I don’t get paid to deal with this before 9 am. Do you want him to call you back later?”
“That is exactly what you are getting paid to do.” Tosaki said monotonously, “But yes.” He grimaced, “Let him call back later.”
The fact that there was no love lost between the Captain and the leading physician of the Forensics Department, who liked hassle him at every turn, was not a secret for the crew. Naomi smirked, delighted at having her expectations met and withdrew her fingers from the mouthpiece, “He’s busy right now.” she faux-sweetly announced, “Try again during our office hours.” She slammed the phone down before Ogura’s distant voice on the other hand could as much as bring forward another jab.
Now that the matter was dealt with, Captain Tosaki moved onto the next target to air his morning frustration out on.
“Detective Nakano, Detective Nagai.” he barked.
“Sir, Yes Sir!” Nakano immediately jumped to attention, almost spilling his drink in the process.
Kei rolled his eyes.
“What is it, Captain?” he asked, feigning politeness.
“What are you standing there for?” Tosaki said, irritatedly, “Get settled in the meeting room. I’d like to start on time for once.”
Nakano cheerily shouted his affirmation, as the Captain strode off. Sergeant Shimomura remained behind, noting something on her clipboard.
“Good morning, Detective Nagai. Detective Nakano.” she greeted them properly, obsidian eyes calmly meeting their gaze.
“Good morning, Seargeant!” Nakano exclaimed, grinning back at her, not even attempting to hide his delight as having received her full attention, “How was your weekend? Did you do something fun?”
This was a one-sided love affair at best, Kei was certain, but that didn’t stop Nakano from being hopelessly infatuated with the Sergeant the moment he had stepped foot into the precinct. It’s good that he himself never had to deal with this type of ridiculous experiences, he thought, quenching the faintest annoyance that bubbled within him whenever he realized Nakano did have a habit of being very flirt-friendly with a lot of his female colleagues. Shimomura faintly returned his smile.
“It was fairly uneventful.” she said, in that reserved, cryptical way of hers, “I hope yours was enjoyable, as well.” The open-ended question was a rookie mistake.
As Nakano launched into an overly-detailed recitation of his weekend which included a paintball tournament and a barbecue (where on earth did he take the energy, Kei could not imagine), he observed the Seargeant more closely.
Fairly uneventful could mean anything when it came to Sergeant Shimomura. The last time she had used that description, she had single-handedly led a drug bust that had carried on into the early hours of Sunday morning. She was only few years older than Kei. He was also fairly certain they’d both trained at the same academy, although he had no proof of that. Upon joining their precinct, Tosaki had immediately recruited her as his second-in-command, which came to no surprise. Shimomura was not only loyal to the core, but also greatly skilled both in detective work and martial combat. She also did not seem fazed by the fact that she often got mistaken as Tosaki’s secretary. Whenever that happened, the Captain made sure to correct the mistake immediately, referring to her as his “highly talented Sergeant” and, and redirecting whoever misspoke to see Naomi if they wanted to speak with his “highly talented secretary.” (It was a blessing that he always made a show of loudly announcing these corrections, so Naomi at least had a few seconds to save her level on Wintry Workshop and pull up an Excel Table on her computer so as not to undermine his statement.)
Apart from this, he had not a single clue about the Seargeant’s backstory, interests or even exact whereabouts. Which was fairly unusual for a department as…sociable as theirs. This was the most polite way Kei had of putting it.
“I know exactly three things about you.” Kei had pointed out one evening, as stacks of paperwork were dragging them long past the end of their shift, “And one of them is that you don’t let anyone know where you live.”
“That is already one thing more than you were supposed to know, Detective Nagai.” the Seargeant had said, the corners of her lips tilting up ever so slightly, “Not even my relatives have the information.”
He had left it at that. He had once seen her body-slam the leader of human trafficking ring that towered two heads above her after the man had attempted to pull a gun on her. It really wasn’t worth the risk.
“So in conclusion.” Detective Nakano said, gesturing towards the projector, “I’m really certain this is the man we’re looking for. Here he is, on his way of committing crime.”
With a dramatical flourish, he moved onto the next slide of his presentation.
The grainy photo, taken from a security camera inside the Forge headquarters, showed an elderly gentleman wearing a baseball cap and a knit cardigan. His eyes were unfocused, almost closed, giving the impression of him having just woken up from a nap.
Kuroki and Manabe erupted in laughter.
“No way.” Kuroki said.
“He’s on his way alright, but to the next retirement home.” Manabe scoffed.
Kuroki cackled at that and held out his hand for a fist bump, which Manabe returned.
“Alright, let’s give Detective Nakano a chance to present his case.” Seargeant Hirasawa spoke up patiently, ever the mediator, “Detective, what proof do you have?”
“Oh, uh- proof.” Detective Nakano said, scratching his head, “Well…”
Kei looked over at the Captain, who was observing Nakano from his seat at the front of the meeting room with a stony expression. Never a good sign.
“Well, the evidence speaks for itself, doesn’t it?” Nakano said, shrugging helplessly, “He’s in this footage, he was on the previous footage…I’m sure if I contact the Cyber Crimes division they could retrace the IT address that the perps used to hack into the Forge database, and that would probably lead back to—”
“We do not operate on the basis of probably, Detective.” The icy tone in the Captain’s voice made even Nakano cringe.
Tosaki got to his feet. He swiftly moved towards Nakano, crossing his arms in front of his chest.
“Zoom in, Detective.” He ordered. And Nakano did.
Kuroki whistled at the sight. ““Man, let’s hope he meakes it to the retirement home at all.” he said.
As much as it pained Kei to admit it, he was right. Upon closer inspection, the suspect appeared even older, properly geriatric. Fragile. If Nakano had meet him outside of work, he would have likely asked if he needed assistance crossing the streets. And then helped him cross said street. Nakano was friendly like that.
“Are you telling me.” Tosaki said, each word laced with scathing disbelief, “That this is the man you believe to be behind the string of seven flawlessly executed robberies, most recently at the Forge headquarters, a company that prides itself on their bulletproof security system?”
“I’m not sure he even knows what Windows is.” someone muttered in the background. Probably Kuroki. Kei shot an unnerved look in his direction. If someone was to harangue Nakano for his mediocre presentation abilities, it was to be him.
“He could- could have allies!” Nakano defended himself, now gesturing wildly, “Like, most of them big time dudes do.”
The big times dudes, right. Whenever Kei doubted his own capabilities as a detective – which happened more frequently than he would like to admit – it was moments as this one that reassured him that perhaps a future command wasn’t this far out of reach, if this was the competition he was to contend with.
“He has a caretaker, at most, that- “
“Enough.” the Captain snapped. He massaged his temples.
He turned towards his right-hand, the only other detective’s – except, in some instances, Hirasawa’s- opinion he regularly took into consideration. “Sergeant Shimomura, what do you think?”
The room grew quiet, as everyone’s attention focused on the Seargeant sitting in the second row. Nakano seemed to be holding his breath. Shimomura was silent for several moments. When she then spoke, there was the faintest trace of sympathy in her otherwise emotionless tone.
“As much as I appreciate your case work so far, Detective, I believe you at this point that you are lacking the necessary evidence to make an accusation, let alone an arrest.”
She concluded by clicking her pen shut. Upon this judgement, Nakano visibly deflated. Shimomura had likely been his last and most important pillar of hope.
Tosaki nodded. “I agree.”
“Listen, guys.” Nakano called out, a tinge of desperation creeping into his voice, “You know I have a really good intuition.”
That he had, Kei had to admit. Despite his own record of solved cases, Nakano wasn’t lagging too far behind. Or at all. There had been one too many times where they had made a competition, with a humiliating punishment for that month’s loser in terms of numbers. Though even those didn’t seem to faze him. He had worn the pink, glitter-adorned “Boss Babe ” shirt with pride to the precinct the day after Nagai had bested him one glorious August evening. Kei would have called sick before he sat one foot through the doors in this get-up. He imagined his little sister calling him a misogynist and scowled at the idea.
“And it is because of said intuition”- wow, what a big word for you, Detective, Kei thought drlyly, “That I am so very certain.” Nakano continued, his voice becoming more steadfast and louder in his determination, “This is the culprit!” He pointed back towards the screen, the image woefully undermining the earthshattering point he was trying to make, “this is the guy we have been chasing for months, who has been making our lives hell since he robbed that gaming store a year ago.”
“That’s a hell of a nice deal on those retro consoles.” Ogura had whistled through his teeth when Kei had shown him the recipes of the robbery after the doctor’s persistent badgering, “Wish I had a Pacman game at home.”
“So, if you believe me, I can say that it’s him with like” Nakano frowned, running the numbers in his head: “85% certainty! That’s how certain I am!”
Kei was about to throw in his own comment on the situation when the Captain shut down the projector, much to Nakano’s gasping dismay and feeble protests.
“85% are not enough, Detective.” he said coldly and turned towards the room
, “Meeting dismissed.”
Kei tried to spend the rest of the day in a productive state, in an effort to be able to go home at the designated time that was almost never kept. Nakano, who had not quite bounced back from their morning meeting, unintentionally made every effort to thwart this plan.
“I just don’t get why my case work wasn’t enough.” he whined, for the second time that afternoon, head placed on Kei’s desk, where the later was filing, or rather, attempting to file a report.
“And I don’t get why you continue to ignore my work space, but here we are.” Kei said monotonously.
“Come on, dude, we’re basically desk mates.” Nakano argued, which was a very convenient stretching of the truth.
The fact that he had to roll past four other desks on his way to Kei’s – courtesy of Tosaki, who had placed them apart in his first week in order to improve work flow - was no deterrent for Detective Nakano. He enjoyed making the way into a race of sorts, often timing how long it took him to get from one desk to the other. His record of five seconds was still unbeaten.
“I pulled so much overtime for this, it’s like the Captain didn’t even properly read my report-“
Kei saved his document, and sighed, deciding to spare a few seconds of his valuable time for his colleague.
“I’m certain he did. It’s just not that simple.” He said, “Seargeant Shimomura has been on the same track for months. If she’s finding it to be a challenge, why did you think it would be an easy solve for you?”
This seemed to resonate with Nakano. “Well.” he said, appearing thoughtful of suddenly, “Guess you have a point. Still sucks, though.”
Kei hummed affirmatively, leaving his colleague alone with his own thoughts, which was thankfully a peaceful situation. He chanced a glance at the large office clock. If he kept working at his previous speed, and if Seargeant Hirasawa didn’t magically appear with another apartment break-in for him to process, then perhaps- today he would actually be able to leave-
“Detective Nakano, Detective Nagai.” Captain Tosaki barked from his office door, “A word. Now.”
Kei did not even attempt to suppress his groan.
“Well, suppose we should go, right?” Nakano said, squaring his shoulders and throwing him a questioning sort of look to which Kei could only respond in kind. No, he too had no idea what could possibly be going on.
“Oopsie.” Naomi said, a grimacing-type of smile clear with Schadenfreude, as they walked past her desk, “The Captain is still in kind of a bad mood. The fact that Doc Ogura just called back a few seconds ago didn’t help with that at all.”
Kei saw that she at least had the decency to pause her Candy Crush game for that short, albeit pointless conversation.
“Great.” he replied sarcastically, “Thank you for the info.”
“No worries.” Naomi chirped, “Let me know if there’s anything going on, yeah? The office has been so quiet these past few days.” She leant forward and lowered the register of her voice: “I could use some juicy info.”
“We’ll see what we can do, Miss Naomi!” Kou called out enthusiastically, as Kei, unnerved, dragged him to Captain’s office.
Captain Tosaki wasn’t alone. Sergeant Shimomura stood on his right side, giving them the hint of a smile as they entered.
“Close the door properly and pull down the blinds.” Captain Tosaki instructed promptly “I have a matter of great importance to discuss with both of you.”
Kei had not expected this turn of events. He took a moment to recollect himself, while Nakano already jumped into action with an enthusiastic “Yes, Sir!” and carried out the tasks.
“Sit down.” the Sergeant said, gesturing to the seats in front of the desk.
They both did. Anticipation had Kei sliding to the edge of his chair, toes poised on the carpeted floor. Nakano seemed equally as nervous, but in stark contrast, as far as Kei could tell, carried himself with less with dread, even with a hint of excitement.
“So.” Tosaki said, after a few beats of uncomfortable silence, “I have called you here to inform you that I – or, rather, we both-“ he glanced at the Sergeant, “Would like to revise our statement on Detective Nakano’s casework.”
Something lurched in Kei’s chest.
“Revise?” Kou said, in a puzzled tone, because of course he did.
“Retract.” Sergeant Shimomura interjected, “We have reviewed your work and believe that you are on the right path, Detective.”
“All evidence considered, we believe you have identified the correct culprit. Responsible for the burglaries of several stores, the Forge headquarters and beyond.” Tosaki continued with a sigh, “Your intuition, unfortunately, was correct.”
Kei could see the wheels turning in Nakano’s head.
“Heck yeah!” his colleague shouted, pumping his fist in elation, which earned him an insistent Shush from his unamused superiors.
“Sorry.” Nakano .said sheepishly, scratching his head. “I’m just glad I got it right. It’s good when your work pays off.”
The Captain sighed again.
“Why unfortunately?” Kei spoke up, raising an eyebrow at the odd turn of phrasing, “How is a progress in a case not beneficial?”
The Captain and the Sergeant exchanged another one of their trademark looks.
“Well.” Sergeant Shimomura said, hesitating, “The matter appears to be larger than we originally anticipated.”
“That being a rather euphemistic understatement.” Tosaki said, producing a file from his drawers and slapping it down in front of them, “Our culprit, Samuel T. Owen, is not only responsible for the string of robberies.”
CLASSIFIED, red letters read.
“We also believe him to be the leader of an anarchist uprising with ties to the black market, specifically organ trafficking.”
Fuck, was the first thought to enter Kei’s mind, More overtime. He was exhausted as it was. He ignored the sliver of interest he felt at the promise of a case far more thrilling than he had ever worked one, even dreamed of working when he chose his career path. Nakano, on the other hand, made an odd, high-pitched noise next to him, which Kei correctly identified as a suppressed whimper of excitement.
“Heck yeah.” his colleague whispered in awe, fist clenched, beaming like Christmas had come early.
“So we have asked you here to promote you to primary investigators on this case that must be carried out with utmost-“ Tosaki paused, eyeing Nakano scrutinizingly, “disrection. No- one is to be informed the nature of this investigation, or any new developments, apart from Sergeant Shimomura and myself. At least, for the foreseeable future. Understood?”
“Yes Sir!” the Detective replied, an excited almost-yell that made the Sergeant shush him again.
The Captain massaged his forehead. “You both, including you, Detective Nagai.”
“Yes, Sir.” Kei responded, dully.
“I hope you do not disappoint us with your work on the SATO case.” The Captain concluded.
“Sato?” Nakano asked, frowning.
“It’s the acronym we have chosen.” Sergeant Shimomura explained, “Samuel T. Owen is the name of our suspected culprit. Or in other words-“ she paused for effect, “SATO.”
Even if Kei had had more time to prepare, he would not have been able to quell Nakano’s shout of excitement this time. It would have been hard too, with excitement and anticipation thrumming in his own veins.
“Heck yeah!”

Rest in Peace Andre Braugher (01.07.1962- 11.12.2023) - your incredible portrayal of Captain Raymond Holt will be missed. You will always be the Captain of our Hearts!

Biden, Zelensky sign bilateral security agreement | The Hill
President Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday signed a bilateral security agreement between the two countries, marking a major milestone in long-term support from the U.S. for Ukraine in its defensive war against Russia.
The two presidents signed the agreement at the end of the first day of the Group of Seven summit being held in Puglia, Italy, and spoke of their commitments during a press conference, standing side by side.
“Our goal is to strengthen Ukraine’s credible defense and deterrence capabilities for the long term,” Biden said. “A lasting peace for Ukraine must be underwritten by Ukraine’s own ability to defend itself now and to deter future aggression anytime in the future. The United States is going to help ensure that Ukraine can do both.”
The agreement between the U.S. and Ukraine is also expected to serve as an eventual bridge to Ukraine’s membership in NATO, with alliance members also pursuing their own bilateral agreements with Kyiv.
The president laid out the agreement, specially noting that it does not include U.S. troops on the ground, pushing back on some calls in Europe that the next step in supporting Ukraine is by providing foreign troops.
“Not by sending American troops to fight [in] Ukraine but by providing weapons and ammunition, expanded intelligence sharing, continue to train brave Ukrainian troops at bases in Europe and the United States, enhancing interoperability between our militaries in line with NATO standards, investing in Ukraine’s defense industrial base so in time … they can supply their own weapons,” Biden said.
Both leaders added that the agreement also includes working with partners to build a future for Ukraine that is “strong, sustainable, and resilient” and supporting economic and energy recovery for Ukraine after the Russian attacks.
When asked whether the U.S. is changing course to allow Ukraine to fire U.S. weapons into Russia, Biden pushed back and said he had changed that policy — even as earlier guidance from the White House to Ukrainian officials was that American weapons should not be used to strike targets inside Russia.
“It makes a lot of sense for Ukraine to be able to take out or combat what is coming across that border,” Biden said.
The president further said that Ukraine would have some of five Patriot air defense systems “relatively quickly,” amid urgent Ukrainian pleas to get at least seven of the air defense systems.
Zelensky described the signing of the bilateral agreement as “a truly historic day” and said that the security agreement is an agreement for the “protection of human lives.”
“This is an agreement on steps to guarantee sustainable peace and therefore it benefits everyone in the world because the Russian war in Ukraine is a global threat,” Zelensky said.
The Ukrainian president described the agreement as holding “detailed, legally binding” American commitments to Ukraine maintaining its status as an independent, sovereign country.
The commitments include military, defensive support for Ukraine as it continues its fight to push back Russian forces from its territory, “and also for a period of peace after the war, and we will definitely ensure peace,” Zelensky said.
The White House provided text of the agreement, which covers support for Ukraine’s vision of a peaceful resolution by regaining all its territory from Russian occupation; ongoing reforms in Ukraine to advance its integration into the European Union and aspirations to join NATO; and it outlines key areas of defense and security cooperation.
The agreement also includes an article on “termination” stating that either party may initiate termination of the agreement through a written request, and that would take effect six months after notification of the desire to end the agreement.
Still, the text allows for existing cooperation or arrangements to remain in effect even if the bilateral agreement is terminated.
“In the event that Ukraine becomes a member of NATO, the Parties shall meet and confer on the future status of this Agreement,” the text reads.

WIP Word Search Game
Tagged by @mxanigel, thank you!! 😊 I was given the words NIGHT, COMFORT, and TREE.
Now, two of those aren't actually WIPs because CTRL+F has informed me that I do not, in fact, use the word 'comfort' a lot (I'm not sure what that says about me), and the one instance of 'night' I found is honestly rather disappointing, so I'm just bending the rules for this one.
Night - From Dreaming of Home (Not a WIP), a one-shot from my Mass Effect/Dragon Age crossover series, in which the Warden who killed the Archdemon (who happens to be Loghain, because I just have to put him in unpleasant situations) wakes up in Shepard's body after their reconstruction by Cerberus.
Dark. All around him is dark, unfathomable as a starless night, or a thick coat of tar spread over his vision, and he tries to move his hand to rub it against his eyes, but his limbs are heavy, stuck under the itchy cover that traps him like a coat of ice - cold, and inescapable. There are footsteps in the distance, and as they grow closer the distorted echoes that surround him become clearer. More human. Voices. Erin and Wynne's, he realises as a door creaks open, and, though he still cannot see them, he is now certain they are in the same room. “Surely you realise another grimoire is unlikely to hold the key to our problem.” "And what would you have me do?" Erin snaps. "Tell her Majesty the truth, for one. Maker knows I have little respect for the man but she ought to know..." "That her father remains unconscious. And she does." Past his closed eyelids, a faint, yellowish glow pierces the darkness, and he tries to open his eyes once more. To no avail. "Unconscious does not even begin to cover it. The man is cold as a corpse. It has been..." "Three weeks, yes, but he’s breathing,” Erin cuts her off again. “They both are. And that didn't stop anyone from trying to cure Arl Aemon, now, did it?" "You know this is different. The Arl is… everything Loghain is not. And you cannot expect the Circle to dispatch what few healers they have to spare for the benefit an apostate and a traitor to the Crown. Not after what happened.” “Oh, trust me,” she huffs. “I do not expect the Circle to dispatch anything for the benefit of anyone. That I got Irving to relinquish this book is a small miracle in its own right.”
Tree - from The Bear, in which Tav and Astarion have a run-in with - you guessed it - a bear (no, not that bear, as they will soon find out)
Outside the tent, Scratch barks in alarm. Urgh. Of course. It's in moments like this that he curses himself for not letting Shadowheart keep the dog. "We're fine, Scratch!" Tavalyn exclaims, but the barking doesn't stop, and soon enough, a growl follows. Astarion doesn't bother repressing a groan as he throws the flap of the tent open, ignoring the rays that prick at his exposed skin like so many ants busying themselves about a piece of carrion. He doesn't dwell on the image, blinking at the beast before him instead. "What in the Hells ... Halsin?" he hazards, knowing full well the man is half a continent away petting bunnies, feeding orphans and hugging trees. Not that he is particularly eager to have the druid play gooseberry, mind you, but the prospect is somewhat less daunting than fighting a bear naked while the sun slowly-but-not-that-slowly roasts him to a crisp. Gods, the sun... Astarion dives back into the tent, finding cover in the shade. The bear, however, does not lose interest. One roar, then it charges. Not Halsin. Definitely not.
Comfort - from Long Live the King (not a WIP either), in which Erin and Loghain join Alistair on his journey to Tevinter to rescue Maric. Things are going swimmingly (no).
“Maker damned rum,” he groaned. “I’ll be feeling this all day… A word of advice: if Isabela tries to ‘comfort’ you with a drink, do yourselves a favour and say no. I’d rather have darkspawn blood again. At least you expect it to be foul.” Loghain extended the bucket to him. “This might be of use,” he said. “But your advice is noted.” “Oh, wonderful. A bucket to barf in. Way to turn around a lousy day. Never would have thought of that myself.” Well, then. Loghain picked up the bucket and made for the cabin-door. Alistair caught his arm. “Wait! I’ll take it.”
Tagging (as always, only if you feel like it): @dairine-bonnet, @deedeemactir, @illusivesoul... and I think everyone else has already been tagged, but if you haven't and I forgot you, don't hesitate to pretend I tagged you too! Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to find the words: light, friend, and danger!

The new route Russia is using to export its oil to China. Unfortunately global warming and the melting of the icecaps only benefits Russia geopolitically. What’s the big deal? you might wonder. A 10-day reduction in transport time is huge when it comes to the velocity of capital. Power accrues to the nations that control key maritime trade routes.
*
Between climate change and the new Cold War, the future doesn’t look pretty. China’s economy is imploding thanks to their reliance on a debt-fueled real estate bonanza, their misguided zero COVID policy, and Xi Jinping’s head-scratchingly bad policies (and of course, his consolidation of power). Siding with Russia was a huge mistake… Now China’s biggest export markets are trying to decouple or at least diversify away from them. Youth unemployment is so bad in China (21%, but possibly significantly higher) that the government has decided to stop publishing such data. The Philippines and Vietnam are pivoting toward the US. South Korea and Japan are putting their long, historical feud aside to join forces against China. Japanese military neutrality is over. Meanwhile a tiny island called Taiwan makes over 92% of the world’s advanced semiconductors and will likely be invaded in our lifetime. Will an (economically) weakened China make it more or less likely that Xi will invade Taiwan? (Strongmen facing a domestic crisis and loss of popular support do often start wars as a kind of “gamble for resurrection,” but Xi might have become more risk adverse as he observes Russia’s debacle in Ukraine. Plus, an amphibious invasion is logistically extremely difficult to pull off.)
Defense spending worldwide is skyrocketing, climbing back toward Cold War levels. The lines on the map are hardening, particularly in the Asian/Pacific theater and the European theater. A nuclear trifecta of Russia-China-North Korea is emerging. Yes, it is a marriage of convenience, but quite a dangerous one given that Russia will likely transfer technology (specifically, platforms to deliver nuclear warheads) to North Korea in exchange for Soviet-compatible ammunition/arms to use in Ukraine. I hate feeling like the world is a frog getting boiled but as I finish this 26-part BBC documentary on World War I, I can’t help but feel that the geopolitical situation is very unstable.
Oh, the madness of nation states! Wake me up when it’s over.

Class Unity, Academic Success: The Impact of Group Learning
The traditional image of learning often involves solitary figures hunched over textbooks in quiet libraries. However, the landscape of education is evolving, and the power of group learning is gaining well-deserved recognition. This collaborative approach, whether in a physical class group or an online learning environment, fosters a sense of class unity and significantly impacts academic success.
Explain Learning understands the importance of fostering a supportive learning environment, both online and offline. In this article, we'll delve into the transformative power of group learning and explore its numerous benefits for students of all ages and disciplines.
What is Group Learning?
Group learning encompasses a variety of collaborative learning strategies where students work together to achieve a common academic goal. This can involve anything from discussing course material in a study group to working on group projects or participating in online forums. The key elements of group learning are shared responsibility, active participation, and the exchange of ideas.
Benefits of Group Learning
There are numerous benefits associated with group learning, making it a valuable tool for students in various educational settings:
Enhanced Understanding: Discussing complex concepts with peers can solidify your grasp of the material. Hearing diverse perspectives can challenge assumptions and lead to a deeper understanding of the subject matter.
Active Learning: Group learning encourages active participation, a key aspect of effective learning. By explaining concepts to others, you strengthen your own knowledge and identify areas where you may need further clarification.
Improved Problem-Solving Skills: Working through challenging concepts together hones critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Brainstorming strategies for approaching difficult questions in a collaborative setting can be highly beneficial.
Boosted Confidence: Discussing problem sets or quiz questions with peers can help identify strengths and weaknesses. The support of a group can build confidence and a sense of preparedness for exams.
Increased Motivation: Studying with a group creates a sense of accountability, keeping you motivated to stay ahead of the curve. Seeing your peers committed to studying can inspire you to do the same.
Development of Communication and Collaboration Skills: Group learning fosters communication and collaboration skills essential for success in both academic and professional settings. You learn to articulate ideas clearly, listen actively, and work effectively with others.
Reduced Stress: Sharing the workload and anxieties associated with academics can make studying less stressful. The camaraderie of a learning group creates a supportive environment that promotes well-being.

Set Clear Goals: Establish clear goals for each group session. Decide what topics you want to cover and what questions you aim to answer.
Prepare for Meetings: Arrive prepared for study sessions. Review the material beforehand, identify areas you need clarification on, and bring any questions you have.
Active Participation: Be an active participant. Share your understanding of the subject matter, ask questions, and contribute meaningfully to group discussions.
Respectful Communication: Value different perspectives within the group. Practice active listening and ensure everyone feels comfortable asking questions and participating.
Focus and Time Management: While some social interaction is natural, prioritize focused discussions and productive study sessions during group meetings.
Establish Ground Rules: If you're forming your own group, consider establishing ground rules to ensure everyone is on the same page and the group functions effectively.
Conclusion
Group learning offers a wealth of benefits for students, fostering academic success, building valuable skills, and creating a sense of class unity.
