Trolls Used Her Face to Make Fake Porn. There Was Nothing She Could Do.

Sabrina Javellana was a rising star in local politics — until deepfakes derailed her life.

Most mornings, before walking into City Hall in Hallandale Beach, Fla., a small city north of Miami, Sabrina Javellana would sit in the parking lot and monitor her Twitter and Instagram accounts. After winning a seat on the Hallandale Beach city commission in 2018, at age 21, she became one of the youngest elected officials in Florida’s history. Her progressive political positions had sometimes earned her enemies: After proposing a name change for a state thoroughfare called Dixie Highway in late 2019, she regularly received vitriolic and violent threats on social media; her condemnation of police brutality and calls for criminal-justice reform prompted aggressive rhetoric from members of local law enforcement. Disturbing messages were nothing new to her.

The morning of Feb. 5, 2021, though, she noticed an unusual one. “Hi, just wanted to let you know that somebody is sharing pictures of you online and discussing you in quite a grotesque manner,” it began. “He claims that he’s one of your ‘guy friends.’”

Javellana froze. Who could have sent this message? She asked for evidence, and the sender responded with pixelated screenshots of a forum thread that included photos of her. There were comments that mentioned her political career. Had her work drawn these people’s ire? Eventually, with a friend’s help, she found a set of archived pages from the notorious forum site 4chan. Most of the images were pulled from her social media and annotated with obscene, misogynistic remarks: “not thicc enough”; “I would breed her”; “no sane person would date such a stupid creature.” But one image further down the thread stopped her short. She was standing in front of a full-length mirror with her head tilted to the side, smiling playfully. She had posted an almost identical selfie, in which she wore a brown crew-neck top and matching skirt, to her Instagram account back in 2015. “It was the exact same picture,” Javellana said of the doctored image. “But I wasn’t wearing any clothes.”

There were several more. These were deepfakes: A.I.-generated images that manipulate a person’s likeness, fusing it with others to create a false picture or video, sometimes pornographic, in a way that looks authentic. Although fake explicit material has existed for decades thanks to image-editing software, deepfakes stand out for their striking believability. Even Javellana was shaken by their apparent authenticity.

“I didn’t know that this was something that happened to everyday people,” Javellana told me when I visited her earlier this year in Florida. She wondered if anyone else had seen the photos or the abusive comments online. Several of the threads even implied that people on the forum knew her. “I live in Broward County,” one comment read. “She just graduated from FIU.” Other users threatened sexual violence. In the days that followed, Javellana became increasingly fearful and paranoid. She stopped walking alone at night and started triple-checking that her doors and windows were locked before she slept. In an effort to protect her personal life, she made her Instagram private and removed photographs of herself in a bathing suit.

Discovering the images changed how Javellana operated professionally. Attending press events was part of her job, but now she felt anxious every time someone lifted their camera. She worried that public images of her would be turned into pornography, so she covered as much of her body as she could, favoring high-cut blouses and blazers. She knew she wasn’t acting rationally — people could create new deepfakes regardless of how much skin she showed in the real world — but changing her style made her feel a sense of control. If the deepfakes went viral, no one could look at how she dressed and think that she had invited this harassment.

Jonathon Adamson, Washington inmate 425903, born 1998, incarceration intake in 2019 at age 21, sentenced 42.5 years; scheduled discharge date not available

Murder, Rape, Kidnapping, Witness Tampering

In a 2019 hearing in Lewis County Superior Court Adamson pleaded guilty in the death of Randle (Washington) teen Benjamin Eastman III.

Adamson, who has been in the Lewis County Jail since June 30, 2018.

As a condition of sentencing, Adamson testified and provided a full and accurate account of Eastman’s death as a state witness against other individuals involved, including cases against Michael D. Salazar, 17, and Amanda L. Hagerty, 42.

Salazar is accused of preventing someone from reporting to attack Eastman to a third party, after it was overheard during a camping trip. Hagerty is accused of helping Adamson and his brother, Benito Marquez, 17, devise a false story to tell law enforcement as they investigated Eastman’s disappearance.

Adamson pleaded guilty on July 3, 2019 to first-degree murder, first-degree rape, second-degree kidnapping in Eastman’s death, and to two counts of witness tampering from February 2019.

The plea agreement includes an agreed-upon sentence of 42 and a half years to life in prison.

Marquez pleaded guilty on Feb. 22, 2019 to charges including first-degree murder and first-degree rape.

The brothers were accused of luring Eastman into the woods in East Lewis County and beating him to death. They allegedly left him in a shallow grave, then dug up his body and moved it before fleeing to Eastern Washington, where they were arrested.

I'm a premed from the U.S., closing out my third year as a double major in molecular/cell/developmental bio and Spanish. "Moon Chair" has been my best friend through the application process this year; I have it on repeat every single time I do anything med-school-app related (not even just for the bit, it slaps). I *just* submitted my AMCAS application for this cycle, so with the faith that all goes well, I'm gonna give dnp a little bit of credit for helping me get to med school. <3

That being said!! Later on, if anybody's applying in the next few cycles after this, I'm happy to answer questions or be a shoulder to lean on!! Also to @greycr3scent and @cactuslester if we somehow end up at the same med school, I'm gonna lose it in the best way possible.

Gov. Tim Walz, D-Minn., faces fresh controversy after a resurfaced 2018 video showed him praising a Muslim cleric, who once shared a pro-Hitler propaganda film and celebrated Oct. 7, as a "master teacher."

In the last few years, Imam Asad Zaman has used his Facebook page to share official Hamas press releases, blog posts from antisemitic sites and a 2015 link to a pro-Hitler film, "The Greatest Story Never Told." Zaman also posted on Oct. 7 that he and his organization "stands in solidarity with Palestinians against Israeli attacks."

On Fox News’ "Outnumbered," Chicago-based correspondent Mike Tobin reported on The Washington Examiner unearthing a video of Walz speaking at an event hosted by Zaman's group, the Muslim American Society of Minnesota, on Feb. 16, 2018.

At the event, then-gubernatorial candidate Walz said of Zaman, "I am a teacher, so when I see a master teacher, I know it. Over the time we’ve spent together, one of the things I’ve had the privilege of is seeing the things in life through the eye of a master teacher, to try and get the understanding."

Despite Walz referring to having spent time with Zaman, the Harris-Walz campaign told Tobin, "Gov. Walz does not have a relationship with [Zaman]," and "strongly condemns Hamas terrorism."

This was not Walz and Zaman’s only public appearance together.

"We start to see more appearances with Zaman and Gov. Walz in 2019, January, April and May. At one point, Zaman delivers an invocation to the state of the state address," Tobin reported. "He appeared with Gov. Walz in May of 2020, calling for calm in the George Floyd riots, and again in 2023 following a string of vandalism at mosques."

"Sam Westrop of The Middle East Forum says Gov. Walz has been willfully ignorant of Zaman’s radicalism because he relies on the Arab or Muslim voting bloc and cannot do anything that would make him appear Islamophobic," the Fox News correspondent said.

Westrop said, "This is a serious problem. Under a Walz-Harris ticket, given Walz's ability to embrace really just the worst kind of radicals within the Muslim community, one can only imagine this will be replicated at the White House level. Walz clearly doesn't want to know about the extremists he embraces."

Walz’s administration has also donated over $100,000 to Zaman's group, according to state records reviewed by the Washington Examiner.

The Minnesota Muslim American Society is a chapter of the Muslim American Society (MAS), which the United Arab Emirates designated a terrorist group in 2014. MAS faced criticism in 2019 when a video emerged of children at a Philadelphia chapter event calling for Jewish people to be killed.

Federal prosecutors have described the MAS as "founded as the overt arm of the Muslim Brotherhood in the U.S.," according to court records, the Examiner first reported.

The House of Representatives will be back in session tomorrow after the February 19 Presidents Day holiday. It is facing a number of crucial issues, but the ongoing problem of the radicalism of the MAGA Republicans has ground—and, apparently, continues to grind—legislation to a halt.  

The farm bill, which establishes the main agricultural and food policies of the government—agricultural subsidies and food benefits, among other things—and which needs to be reauthorized every five years, expired in September 2023. While Congress extended the 2018 bill as a stopgap until September 2024, the new bill should be passed.

The farm bill has more breathing room than the appropriations bills to fund the government in fiscal year 2024 (which started on October 1, 2023). Four of the continuing resolutions Congress passed to keep the government running will expire on March 1; the other eight will expire on March 8. Operating on a continuing resolution that maintains 2023 levels of spending means the government cannot shift to the new priorities Congress agreed to in the 2024 National Defense Authorization Act, and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, along with leaders from the Pentagon and the Senate, warns that the lack of appropriations measures is compromising national defense. 

On an even tighter timeline is the national security supplemental bill to aid Ukraine, Israel, the Indo-Pacific, and to provide humanitarian aid to Gaza. Ukraine is running out of ammunition, and its war effort is faltering. Every day that passes without the matériel only the U.S. can provide hurts the Ukrainians’ cause.

All of these measures are stalled because extremist MAGA Republicans in the House are insisting their demands be included in them. Negotiators have been trying to hash out the farm bill for months, and today Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), chair of the Senate Agriculture Committee, said she would rather continue to extend the 2018 law than bow to the House Republicans’ demands for cuts to food assistance programs and funding for climate change. 

Appropriations bills are generally passed “clean,” that is, without the inclusion of unrelated controversial elements. But House Republicans are insisting the appropriations bills include their own demands for much deeper cuts than House leadership agreed to, as well as riders about abortion; gun policy; diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives; LGBTQ+ rights; and so on. Those are nonstarters for Democrats.

As for the national security supplemental measure, lawmakers agree on a bipartisan basis that Ukraine’s successful defense against Russia’s invasion is crucial to U.S. national security. The Senate passed the bill on a strong bipartisan vote of 70 to 29, and if brought to the floor of the House, it would be expected to pass there, too. 

But House speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) refuses to bring it to the floor. When President Joe Biden first asked for the aid in October, Republicans insisted they could not see their way to protecting our national security overseas without addressing it on the southern border. A bipartisan group of senators spent four months hashing out a border provision for the bill—House Republicans declined to participate—only to have House Republicans scuttle the measure when former president Trump told them to. The Senate promptly passed a bill that didn’t have the border component. Rather than take it up, the House recessed.

Today, President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris met with congressional leaders and urged them to pass the appropriations bills and the national security supplemental. But Biden, Harris, Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), and House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) all agree on the need to pass these measures immediately. The holdout is House speaker Johnson.

After the meeting, Schumer said the meeting on Ukraine was “one of the most intense” scenes he had ever seen in the Oval Office. "We said to the speaker, 'Get it done.' I told him this is one of the moments—I said I've been around here a long time. It's maybe four or five times that history is looking over your shoulder, and if you don't do the right thing, whatever the immediate politics are, you will regret it. I told him two years from now and every year after that, because really, it's in his hands." 

For his part, Johnson said that “the House is actively pursuing and investigating all the various options” on the supplemental bill, “but again, the first priority of the country is our border and making sure it’s secure.” 

Johnson appears to be working for Trump, who is strongly opposed to aid for Ukraine and likely intends to use immigration as a campaign issue. 

But Trump is a poor choice to give control over United States security. Yesterday, Special Counsel Jack Smith responded to Trump’s motion to dismiss the charges against him associated with his stealing and hiding classified documents on the grounds that he was being treated differently than President Biden, who had also had classified documents in his possession but was not criminally charged.

Smith noted that while there have been many government officials who have accidentally or willfully kept classified documents, and even some who briefly resisted attempts to recover them, Trump’s behavior was unique. “He intentionally took possession of a vast trove of some of the nation’s most sensitive documents…and stored them in unsecured locations at his heavily trafficked social club.” Then, when the government tried to recover the documents, Trump “delayed, obfuscated, and dissembled,” finally handing over only “a fraction” of those in his possession. No one, Smith wrote, “has engaged in a remotely similar suite of willful and deceitful criminal conduct and not been prosecuted.” 

Perhaps to distract from Smith’s filing, House Committee on Oversight and Accountability chair James Comer (R-KY) and House Committee on the Judiciary chair Jim Jordan (R-OH) today subpoenaed information from Special Counsel Robert Hur’s investigation into Biden’s handling of documents. Hur’s report exonerated the president and showed such contrast between Trump's behavior and Biden's full cooperation with officials that Smith used material from it in his filing. 

Comer and Jordan are likely also eager to find new material against Biden after the man who provided the key evidence in their impeachment attempt turned out to be working with Russian intelligence agents and was recently indicted for lying and creating a false record.

Since this year is a leap year, Congress has three days to pass the first four of the appropriations measures or to find another workaround before March 1, when parts of the government shut down. As Schumer said, those measures, along with the national security supplemental bill, are now in Speaker Johnson’s hands.

Your timeline of V&D was great! What is V&J's?

Well, the best we know they met in Feb 2012 during NYC Fashion Week. 📸

She was 17 and he was... not. 🙃

No idea if they developed "a friendship" right away or if this was just an eager fangirly pic sesh thing, but the next proof of them "hanging out" came in Sept 2013, again at a fashion event in NYC when he showed her cat videos on Youtube or some such surely innocent shit. 🧐📱

After that, the next sightings came in the spring of 2014 when things REALLY kicked off and during that spring and summer she started spending time with him in LA and he lugged her with him to San Fran and on tour across Europe and the Med vacay and also the US during the Carnivores tour.

They kept it going hot and heavy/on and off (even tho he had some side quests too... 🙄) throughout 2015...

... as well as 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. 👫

They spent one Christmas together up in Seattle...

... and she had a really exciting time at Camp Mars. 😛

Then came June 2019 when they were snapped looking über-domesticated in LA...

... but right after this something went horribly wrong and they broke up. 💔

VK escaped LA and spent that entire summer with Mads & co in NYC and the Med, and suddenly decided she needs a dog in her life and thus Cosma happened! 🐶

Not at all a bandaid for her broken heart or anything... 🙃🩹

But there was light at the end of the tunnel tho because in December 2019 VK and her son moved to LA, and bing bang boom along came New Years and suddenly the lovebirds were sneaking off to Kauai! 🏖

And then came the Joshua Tree couples retreat with Stevie and the missus, Reedy and the missus, and spinsters GFlo and Eiza, and suddenly VK wasn't a dirty little secret anymore! 🤷🏼‍♀️

Suddenly she was allowed to pose in photos with the whole group AND get tagged in photos too which had never happened before! 🤷🏼‍♀️

If you ask me, the reason why JL was able to get her back is by promising to make some easements to his hysterical rules about showing and linking her into his life... 🫠

And then just weeks after that Covid came crashing down on us, and VK moved into Casa Craphole (but for some reason Cosma wasn't as lucky... 🤔) and they kept vacaying in Malibu and national parks and all sorts of places during the summer/fall of 2020.

In the spring of 2021 JL left for Italy to film HoG, and that sadly marked the beginning of the end... 😟

VK stayed in Nevada (ODDLY WITH COSMA THIS TIME! 🤔) and when JL returned from Italy in April he flew straight to NYC and VK followed a couple of days later, and I guess this is when shit really hit the fan and they ended up calling it quits for good. 💔🤷🏼‍♀️

Assuming we're not getting a Covid arc, our U-20 World Cup has to be the one held in 2019.

Nov 18, 2018: Saitama Prefectural Finals, in the evening Isagi receives an invitation to join a special training program. (Ch 1)

Nov 20, 2018: Move-in Day, a Tuesday. Ego says it’s six months from the U-20 World Cup. (Ch 2)

Ego's line gives us two possible dates: Nov 20 & Nov 27. They're both about six months away from the U-20 World Cup (May 23, 2019).

In the English scanlation, Kira thanks Isagi "for the match the other day". The Chinese scanlation on Bilibili has a similar take as Kira says "前几天的比赛辛苦了", suggesting that little time has passed between their match and the start of the Blue Lock Project. Nov 20 sounds like the better option.

The only thing that doesn’t agree with this timeline is Sae’s birthday, which is on the tenth of October. We know for a fact that he’s 17 in Ch 4 and 18 in Ch 94, so he must have turned 18 sometime during the Blue Lock project.

Hi! I’m getting into Thunderbirds fics and was thinking about writing some myself. I saw that you ran a challenge at one point and was wondering if there was any event calendar the fandom is using. Or are there any events at all? I wasn’t sure where to find any.

Hi and welcome to the Thunderfam! :D

There is no strict calendar, but a few events do recur at will.

At the moment we are in the middle of Fanart Appreciation Month, which has occurred in January the previous two years as well. The idea being to reblog lots of artworks to give our artists some recognition.

February has been Fab Five Feb in 2019 and 2020, but was missed last year. I haven't done the call out as to whether the Thunderfam want that one this year yet. It is usually a six week challenge with a focus on the five brothers plus another character which changes each year.

Some time in March/April there might be a Easter gift fic event.

Somewhere between April and August there is sometimes a random challenge event. There was nothing last year, but in previous years there has been Sensory Sunday , Earth & Sky Week and an Olympics challenge.

We also celebrate each of the Tracy boys' birthdays - Gordon 14 Feb, Alan 12 March, Scott 4 July (?), Virgil 15 August (always a big one for me :D ) and John in October. Other cast members also get birthday celebrations at various times of the year.

September and October are usually taken up by external challenges like Sicktember and Whumptober.

We did have a Thunderfam November event - Fluffember - but last year an external event was picked up so Fluffember didn't run, but it did run 2019, 2020 and 2021.

December is left to Tag Team Secret Santa.

There have also been random other events over the past few years and I have no doubt there were others before I joined the fandom in 2018. Due to the sudden rise of Covid in 2020 we started International Rescue & Relief, a fluff prompt challenge which is technically still going, but I haven't mentioned it for ages.

Plus there are always writing prompts or question lists flying around that get picked up by whoever wants to play.

Thunderfam, if I have forgotten anything, please chime in. It is late here and my brain is usually pretty unreliable.

Howdy-hey! Figured I'd post something different today! Today [August 20th, 2023] is special because it's the 5th anniversary of my online mascot, OG! He's gone through a lot since his first design, so I drew up every major version of him!

V1 [August 20th, 2018]

The first ever design of OG! I remember designing him while in my bedroom at a residental treatment center I was staying at! I was rebranding after a traumatic experience and wanted a new mascot. I came up with "TheOGEscargoon" because of my Escargoon phase. :P

Strong resemblense with the source material; I can see him being the most vulgar/unfiltered of the bunch.

V2 [Sept 2018]

I expanded on the original design, but added more to it. One of the more memorable designs in my opinion. Honestly, I like his outfit here; mainly the shirt! Still closely resembles the inspiration, but he lost the shell.

V3 [Jan 2019]

First version to include the snail stocks and shoes for some reason. Wanted to play around with the type of clothes he would wear; not sure why I thought about Peppa Pig Gucci of all things. Bro seems cool, very chill and carefree.

V4 [May 2019]

The date of this redesign is a bit fuzzy, but this version is a personal favourite! Swapped the Escargoon-ish facial hair with a simple goatee. Another outfit I love, might make this an alternate outfit along with V2 and V3. This was also around the time I rebranded to "OpalGalactic"

V5 [Sept 2019]

The first human design of him. I knew right away I wanted to make him a cyborg, but IDK what I was thinking with the weird face plating. Moving away from the main inspiration at this point, my least favourite design tbh. Around 2020, I rebranded again to my current username "OnyxGalaria"

V6 [Jul 2020]

Didn't like the color pallete/outfit of V5, so I made things make sense in a way with the colors and outfit choices. Getting closer to the latest version, but he still had that weird face plating that messed with the mouth placement a lot and I avoided bright colors like the plague.

V7 [Nov 2021]

One of the longest gaps for redesigns, but this is a top favourite! I remember really liking this design a lot, especially being proud of his prosthetic arm! :D Stuck with this design for a long while.

V8 [Feb 2023]

For some reason, I wanted to do another redesign for him. I think I wanted to go for a VTuber vibe with this one. Part of me still likes this version, but at the same time, I'm not sure why I decided to use this design for a while.

V7.5/9 [June 2023, current]

The current design of OG. I decided to combine the aspects I liked from V7 and V8 to make a happy medium I call V7.5! I'll be keeping this design for a long while [hopefully]!

This journey of a song is from their 2021 Yuyu 欲欲 album which is about to be re-released in Feb. 2023 on WV Sorcerer Productions 巫唱片 (based in Paris, France and Nanjing, China)

The members are: 林哲安 Lin Zhe-An (林哲瓜)-Vocal/Songwriter/Gtr/Synth/Bamboo Flute, 吳征峻 Wu Zheng-Jun-Gtr, 蔡瑀晟 Cai Yu-Sheng-Bass, 吳征鴻 Wu Zheng-Hong-Drums.
