Trolls Used Her Face to Make Fake Porn. There Was Nothing She Could Do.
Sabrina Javellana was a rising star in local politics — until deepfakes derailed her life.
https://www.nytimes.com/2024/07/31/magazine/sabrina-javellana-florida-politics-ai-porn.html
Tumblr media
Most mornings, before walking into City Hall in Hallandale Beach, Fla., a small city north of Miami, Sabrina Javellana would sit in the parking lot and monitor her Twitter and Instagram accounts. After winning a seat on the Hallandale Beach city commission in 2018, at age 21, she became one of the youngest elected officials in Florida’s history. Her progressive political positions had sometimes earned her enemies: After proposing a name change for a state thoroughfare called Dixie Highway in late 2019, she regularly received vitriolic and violent threats on social media; her condemnation of police brutality and calls for criminal-justice reform prompted aggressive rhetoric from members of local law enforcement. Disturbing messages were nothing new to her.
The morning of Feb. 5, 2021, though, she noticed an unusual one. “Hi, just wanted to let you know that somebody is sharing pictures of you online and discussing you in quite a grotesque manner,” it began. “He claims that he’s one of your ‘guy friends.’”
Javellana froze. Who could have sent this message? She asked for evidence, and the sender responded with pixelated screenshots of a forum thread that included photos of her. There were comments that mentioned her political career. Had her work drawn these people’s ire? Eventually, with a friend’s help, she found a set of archived pages from the notorious forum site 4chan. Most of the images were pulled from her social media and annotated with obscene, misogynistic remarks: “not thicc enough”; “I would breed her”; “no sane person would date such a stupid creature.” But one image further down the thread stopped her short. She was standing in front of a full-length mirror with her head tilted to the side, smiling playfully. She had posted an almost identical selfie, in which she wore a brown crew-neck top and matching skirt, to her Instagram account back in 2015. “It was the exact same picture,” Javellana said of the doctored image. “But I wasn’t wearing any clothes.”
There were several more. These were deepfakes: A.I.-generated images that manipulate a person’s likeness, fusing it with others to create a false picture or video, sometimes pornographic, in a way that looks authentic. Although fake explicit material has existed for decades thanks to image-editing software, deepfakes stand out for their striking believability. Even Javellana was shaken by their apparent authenticity.
“I didn’t know that this was something that happened to everyday people,” Javellana told me when I visited her earlier this year in Florida. She wondered if anyone else had seen the photos or the abusive comments online. Several of the threads even implied that people on the forum knew her. “I live in Broward County,” one comment read. “She just graduated from FIU.” Other users threatened sexual violence. In the days that followed, Javellana became increasingly fearful and paranoid. She stopped walking alone at night and started triple-checking that her doors and windows were locked before she slept. In an effort to protect her personal life, she made her Instagram private and removed photographs of herself in a bathing suit.
Discovering the images changed how Javellana operated professionally. Attending press events was part of her job, but now she felt anxious every time someone lifted their camera. She worried that public images of her would be turned into pornography, so she covered as much of her body as she could, favoring high-cut blouses and blazers. She knew she wasn’t acting rationally — people could create new deepfakes regardless of how much skin she showed in the real world — but changing her style made her feel a sense of control. If the deepfakes went viral, no one could look at how she dressed and think that she had invited this harassment.

It's time to play guess who said it! A trans person on tumblr.com, or a conservative on one of the Evil People Social Media sites?
"You think sexual harassment is bad? What are you, triggered? You won't survive the winter."
Tumblr media
[ID: A venn diagram with one side labeled, "Conservatives on Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, and all the other 'evil bad people' social media sites". The other side is labeled, "Trans people on tumblr.com". The center reads, "people who think sexual harassment is cool and normal and funny and only cringey weaklings who won't survive in the real world have a problem with it". End ID.]
it's 2024 and we have fully grown adults on tumblr.com defending the most basic blatant forms of sexual harassment, and then reacting exactly like any random conservative would do when called out on it: Do it again out of spite.
You are not meaningfully different from any random conservative just because you're trans if you refuse to unlearn the horrific shit this society has taught you is okay.
Sexual harassment is literally always bad. It is never justified. If you sexually harass people, you are a bad person. If you double down on it when you get called out for it, you're a horrible person.

Oh, of course, because it's totally normal and acceptable for every single girl to have to deal with disgusting sexual harassment. It's just a rite of passage, right????? How silly of me to think that maybe we could live in a world where girls and women don't have to constantly worry about being harassed or assaulted. Silly, silly me.
–I'm sorry, but I can't show you a single girl who hasn't gone through the disgusting situation of sexual harassment or assault..

Looking for falls or some damage in the merchandise, with so much arrogance and pride. Still, she felt uncomfortable under his intense stare, many men looked at her and made her uneasy, but this was a different level of self-conscious; Ferah felt anxious and somehow scared, but couldn't do anything about it or ask him to stop, it was his right he was the boss, and she was just his employ. A beautiful night turned sour by boastful winds.
TW: Mentions of sexual assault and sexual harassment
When I was sixteen, my boyfriend would push himself on me. He would force his face on mine and pin me to the couch. He’d run his hands over my body and find a way between my legs with his hand. He called me sexy and hot. I wore skinny jeans and a sweater. It was a crisp Autumn day.
When I was twenty, I walked to the mental health clinic for my group therapy session. Two guys in a truck pulled along me walking. They yelled obscenities, calling me goodlookin’ and babygirl. I wore baggy jeans and a sweater. It was a warm Winter day.
When I was twenty-one, I was running errands in a small riverside town. As I walked across the street, an older man leaned out his car window and yelled “beautiful” at me. I wore a sun dress and sandals. It was a sunny Summer day.
One week ago, still twenty-one. I was out with my partner, getting drinks at our favourite bar. A man comes up to the bar with his friends and tell me I’ve been giving him “looks” since I got there. He shook my hand and asked me my name. His friend bought everyone shots. As I clinked my glass with them, the man said that I am the most beautiful person he’s ever seen. He looks at his friend and says “damn I just want them to have my babies”. They all laugh. The friends go outside for a smoke. The man pretends he’s drunk and puts his full body weight on me, tipping my chair over. He does this to my partner too. The bartender leads him out of the bar. The tears come. They stop. I was wearing a black dress and black platform boots. It was September 15th, 2023. A beautiful night turned sour by boastful winds.

There may be triggers, I hope that you'll find it worth reading anyway. Here's a unicorn spacer, since blogger doesn't do "under the fold" stuff. I was sixteen when she accused me of sexual assault. It was not in a court of law, it was never brought to the police. It wasn't true. I had tried to kiss her - that is true. It was the kind of kiss you see in countless "geek gets the girl" movies that were so popular back then (and still are today). I was sixteen and stupid enough to think the movies told the truth, so while we were talking, I leaned over on the couch we were both on, and kissed her. For all of a second. I think. I'm pretty sure lips touched, but I can't swear to that. It was a dumbass thing to do. You see, the thing that doesn't happen in movies - the much more likely thing - is that she'll pull back, ask you what the hell you were doing, and you'll blush like the time you did when your mother walked in on you taking a bath even though you're fourteen. In my case, she didn't slap me - we were friends at the time - and we went home. It was during the cleanup part of a haunted house, and I thought that was the exceedingly lame and exceedingly embarrassing end of it. Until I found out she had told people that she'd been shoved up against the wall, her hand shoved on my crotch, and my tongue down her throat. None of that had happened. The thought of me being that violent nauseated me. Still does. People who knew me well didn't believe it for a second. I've had the concept of "no means no" embedded so far into my skull that I've often been told I'm too gentle, and too meek in too many relationships throughout a lot of years. To put it in perspective, when I heard of Antioch's sexual consent rules, I thought they were a good idea. If you don't remember, most people at the time thought they were ridiculous.) Anyhow, those who knew me knew there was no way in hell I'd done anything like she claimed. I found out that year who my real friends were, and I'm glad to have had them. There were other effects over the next two years. I got my ass kicked because of it - one of the only two real fights I've ever been in. (My wrist got broken in the other.) One girl I'd been going out with for a few weeks heard the story from her friends, and broke up with me right then. Another wouldn't go out with me at all, expressly because of this story. It seems minor now, but for a teenaged loser geek, it was a huge deal. Finally, I moved away to college. Years later, the girl I'd kissed for all of a second apologized. She told me she didn't even remember why she'd told people that story, and I believe her. I accepted her apology, and went on with my life. I was twenty-one when I was sexually harassed in the military. It was minor, but I brought it up to my supervisor, but the MPs were never involved. It was true. He kept playing grab-ass - literally - as I'd walk out of one room into the common area. It started like those stupid football "slap each other on the ass" things, but they got more invasive when I asked him to stop. I got a lot of crap about it, too, especially since I was still a private in training - and he wasn't. In 1995, sexual harassment in the Army was yet to be a hot topic; the Aberdeen scandal and biannual mandatory seminars were yet in the future. Reports of men experiencing violent spousal abuse were (literally) met with guffaws and whispered denigrations of manhood by others in my company. You can imagine how seriously a private complaining about his ass being grabbed was taken. He stopped - after my supervisor reluctantly "talked" to him - but it was a difficult several months for me after that until I finally left for Korea. I was about thirty when my older son hurt himself and claimed that his injuries were from child abuse. He repeated the claim more than once over the course of several years. It was never true. No charges were ever pressed, no case ever had any evidence. A few of the times he actually admitted to making it up in front of others.
Most of the times, he didn't. One of those times, I was forced to spend a week in a hotel based solely on his verbal accusation. During that time, he continually threatened my wife. If she didn't do what he wanted, he threatened to have her sent away too. Eventually, he went too far with his threats and violence and was arrested - but we still deal with both the mental and legal effects of that trauma. The accusations are still in a file somewhere, waiting to be a "pattern" of some kind. Not a pattern of his baseless accusations - but a pattern to provide circumstantial evidence against me. I understand that's also the case with sexual harassment charges, too. Regardless of all those things, I still advocate that sexual harassment measures be strong, that child and elder abuse laws be enforced, and that accusers and whistle blowers not face repercussions for coming forward. We must always make sure that we hear all sides of a story, that we take all things into account before jumping to a conclusion - but this is still a sexist, racist, ablest, and ageist world. Harassment and abuse accusations are blunt instruments, but they are a powerful one. Having been on the wrong side of these things - being falsely accused more than once, and ignored as a victim - it's all too easy to give up. It's easy to blame it on a class of people - or even to blame yourself for something you haven't done. Any accusation, especially one so counter to your ideals and the way you live your life, is fundamentally upsetting. I wish there was a better way. As I know all too well, it is easy for an unscrupulous person to fabricate complaints. If you know someone who has made up accusations, please speak out. The accused - almost always a person with power and privilege, whether they abuse it or not - cannot really fight back against those attacks. What I ask of you, all you who need the laws against discrimination, who need the sexual harassment lawsuits, who need protection from abuse, is to keep in mind that each false complaint, each person who gets revenge or personal gain by slandering another, weakens one of the few effective tools that those without privilege have. Those who make a false complaint make it harder for every one of your brothers or sisters - or yourself - who has real problems and faces real harassment. But until a better way can be devised, it's the best system we have, and it's the system we have to stand by. Your suggestions for improvements are, as always, appreciated. https://ideatrash.net/2008/11/accusations-personal-history.html?feed_id=359&_unique_id=66e31be56931e

Chile has a long history of student protests, normally mobilizing against the privatized education system put in place by the military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. What’s happening today emerges from that experience, but with feminism at its core.
Feminist students have occupied universities across Chile. Millaray Huaquimilla, a spokesperson of the feminist occupation of the Faculty of Law of Universidad de Chile. It started at the Universidad Austral in Valdivia, in southern Chile. On 17 April 2018, a group of students occupied the building of Philosophy and Humanities as a reaction to a mismanaged disciplinary case against a professor found guilty of sexual harassment. The Faculty of Law of Universidad de Chile in Santiago came next, ten days later, igniting the movement in one of the country’s most prestigious institutions.
The last straw was a case of sexual harassment involving Professor Carlos Carmona, former president of the Constitutional Court. It took the university eight months to process the case, at the end of which Carmona was suspended for three months for ‘lack of integrity’. The outcome prompted an emergency student assembly that decided to occupy the Law Faculty building. In a matter of days, dozens of faculties and schools across the country followed.
Feminist students have occupied universities across Chile: In an occupied classroom, graffiti reads ‘Neither women nor the land are territories of conquest’. In an occupied classroom, graffiti reads: ‘Neither women nor the land are territories of conquest’. Millaray Huaquimilla, a spokesperson for the occupation of the Faculty of Law, explained what their demands are. ’On the one hand, our petition consists of what we classify as “palliative measures” of the patriarchy, that is to say, how we handle the consequences of gender violence through protocols,’ she said.
Before this mobilization, only seven universities out of 60 had policies and procedures to deal with cases of sexual harassment. Where they did exist, students found these protocols to be inadequate.
‘On the other hand,’ Millaray continues, ‘our petition covers the formative area, with curricular innovations within school programmes.’ In other words, as well as sexual harassment protocols, central to the demands of the movement is the creation of non-sexist curricula, sensitive to issues of gender and sexuality.

actually yes I am giving this its own post.
April 2024:
Sapphic-boy said some bullshit in the notes of this post defending sexual harassment.
I responded in a reblog with:
I'm putting this in a reblog instead of the replies because I don't want it to get lost and I don't feel like putting up with an arbitrary character limit.
People in the notes of this post are insisting that insults like "suck my dick" aren't sexual harassment or rape threats.
People, I know the internet just loves to normalize sexual harassment and other kinds of abuse, but it is 2024. You people literally cannot go around saying that telling someone to suck your dick is not sexual harassment.
That is literally the fucking definition of sexual harassment.
The entire point of telling someone to suck your dick as an insult is to literally sexually humiliate and degrade them. That's the entire point. That's why you say it.
That's literal sexual harassment.
No, it does not become magically okay because you're trans and you're doing it to "own the TERFs". Sexual harassment is always bad, no matter who's doing it or who the victim is. And yes, when you tell people to suck your dick as an insult, they are literally the victim to your sexual harassment, no matter who else they are or why you don't like them.
It is 2024. You people are adults. You are literally required to know how not to sexually harass people. And if you are arguing that telling someone as an insult to suck your dick isn't sexual harassment, you've failed step 1. You are literally sexually harassing people and now you're defending it.
You are not making the world a safer place for victims by normalizing sexual harassment like this. You do not get a free pass to sexually harass people because you're trans and you think you're progressive and you have good reasons for hating the person you're sexually harassing.
Yes, it is in fact, literally, sexual harassment and a rape threat to tell someone to suck your dick as an insult. The only reason you think it's not is because you're the one doing it so you think it's fine now.
Just because you're on the internet and not in a dark alleyway does not mean blatant sexual harassment stops being blatant sexual harassment.
Just because TERFs are the first ones to call you out for blatant sexual harassment doesn't mean your behavior is actually perfectly fine and not sexual harassment. That's literally fucking not how this works.
If the entire fucking point of your insult is to sexually humiliate or degrade or threaten someone? Guess the fuck what? That's sexual harassment!
Telling someone to suck your dick as an insult is literal sexual harassment! It is a rape threat! The only reason you think it's not is because you and your friends have normalized it and desensitized yourselves to it!
This kind of behavior is not fucking okay, no matter who you are or what your politics are or how progressive you think you are!
It is 2024. You people have all got to learn how to not sexually harass people. This is getting absurd. None of you would pass even the most basic fucking How Not To Sexually Harass Your Coworkers computer course at a minimum wage job.
Stop sexually harassing people if you call yourself progressive. Stop telling people to suck your dick as an insult if you call yourself progressive. Sexual harassment is always bad, no ifs, ands, or buts about it! Yes, even if you're trans! Yes, even if you're doing it to bigots!
Stop defending blatant sexual harassment 2k24! I shouldn't have to keep saying this shit to people who claim they're progressive and care about other people!
Watch some basic fucking How Not To Sexually Harass people videos! Go fucking find the websites that explain the concept of sexual harassment to children! Go do literally anything except double down on sexually harassing people!
Just because you are online does not make sexual harassment any less horrible! Just because you don't like the person doesn't mean it's okay to sexually harass them!
Morals are still supposed to fucking exist no matter who they're applied to! That the entire fucking point of them!
Sexual harassment is bad! Telling people to suck your dick as an insult is sexual harassment is bad! This is not a fucking difficult concept and I shouldn't keep having to explain it to adults who should know how to not sexually harass people by now!
If you think this reblog is derailing the original point of the post, then maybe next time don't defend literal sexual harassment in the notes of the post and make me have to see it when I was just looking for TERFs to block -.-
Please just fucking stop defending sexual harassment. This is not something I should have to ask people who claim to care about others.
Sapphic-boy responded with, on April 11th 2024:
Suck my dick.
and said stuff in the tags or whatever about me "not surviving in the real world" if I actually know how to recognize sexual harassment in its most basic, blatant form.
Sarcasm: Because you know, grown adults responding to criticism of bad behavior like 12 year olds who say slurs for fun or like any middle aged Republican man is definitely showing how progressive you are. End sarcasm.
No, seriously, people, you are adults and you think you're progressive but then when you're told that what you're doing is literally the definition of sexual harassment, you decide to react the exact same way any random shitbag Republican would?
Seriously? And you call yourself progressive? You think you're a good person? But your response to being told what you're doing is the definition of sexual harassment is to now do it on purpose, knowing exactly what you're doing?
This is the exact same reactionary shit you claim to hate conservatives for! Why do you think it magically becomes okay when you do it?
And, I hate to break it to all you fucking creeps, but just because you and your creepy friend groups have desensitized eachother to how horrible sexual harassment is, does not in fact magically make sexual harassment okay. If you think telling people "suck my dick" is, and I quote "the normiest insult ever"...
that's not a defense of your behavior, that's a condemnation of you and everyone you hang out with who encourages this kind of blatantly horrible behavior.
Sexual harassment is still sexual harassment whether it's being said in a scary dark alley or over the internet. You do not get a free pass to sexually harass people for any reason, and if you and your friends have become so desensitized to how horrific your behavior is that you literally are now incapable of even admitting that telling people to suck your dick as an insult is sexual harassment...
You need serious fucking help. You people are adults. No one should be having to hold you hand and explain to you that the most basic form of sexual harassment is in fact sexual harassment and is inexcusable and bad no matter who's doing it or why you dislike the person you're doing it to.
No, it doesn't matter that TERFs sexually harass trans people all the time. The entire fucking point of morals is that if you have them, you treat other people with basic respect even if they don't return the favor. TERFs sexually harassing trans people does not make it magically okay for trans people to sexually harass others. That's not how this fucking works. That's not how anything works.
Especially if you then turn around to sexually harass other trans people the exact same way. Now your argument that 'it's okay when it's TERFs' doesn't even apply, so you just need to admit you enjoy sexually harassing people more than you do having the most basic fucking morals.
Literally go and research how to not sexually harass people. It is your moral fucking responsability to not sexually harass people.
