I finished reading Vera Wong's Unsolicited Advice for Murderers by Jesse Sutanto like (checks watch) 14 minutes ago and ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh my goddddddd it is SO GOOD

It's a murder mystery and the titular Vera is a 60-something year old Chinese woman living in San Francisco's Chinatown. The corpse is found in her tea shop and she decides that the police will be utterly incapable so she will solve it herself.

I LOVE VERA

The other perspective characters are also fantastic - they all wormed their way into my heart and I felt so strongly about what happened to them.

The book is also really good at depicting the effect abusive relationships have on not just the people involved directly, but people who are connected to them and how they can affect family dynamics. One of the perspective characters has a toddler (who is adorable and I love) who is ambiguously autistic (the word is never mentioned and no one ever makes specific comments about it, but that was how I read it) and I loved how the book described her relationships with the adults in her life.

Also, there is some very cute romance AND Decidedly-Not-Romance in the book. I also appreciated that the platonic relationships were depicted as being just as, if not more, important as the romantic one.

Vera Wong is a book about the importance of human connection and what love looks like and how art and love and life are imperfect but you don't do any of them because they're flawless. I love it so much.

Tw: Rant/Vent under cut

My mom makes me wanna rip my hair out. Yesterday, She was talking to my brother about when he accidentally locked us out of the house last week and he didn't really want to talk about it. And she said "Kids never wanna talk about the bad things they do." And I was like "you do the same thing -_-" She told me to geuve her an example. And I brought up when she and her situationship blamed me and my brother for my youngest sibling not getting into school. And she said only her situationship said that. And I said no and reminded her that she specifically told me, when I was like 9 btw, that she cried in the shower about my brother not getting into the school because we didn't work hard enough and try hard enough at chess (I used to play in a shit ton of chess tournaments when I was younger but that's a whole different trauma story). And she had the fucking audacity to say that I remembered it wrong and that she never fucking said that. Oh and guess what she said that she blamed the racist ass teacher back then and never said it was our fault. But you know what was our fault, according to her, that we stopped wanting to play chess. Yeah, We stopped liking it because of you and your bitch ass "boyfriend". And after all that she proceeded to yell at me for the next 5 minutes and not take any accountability.
