The EPA announced new emission standards with the goal of having more than half of new cars and light trucks sold in the US be low/zero emission by 2032. One of the most significant climate regulations in the nation’s history, it'll eliminate 7 billion tons of CO2 emissions over the next 30 years. It's part of President Biden's goal to cut greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030 on the road to eliminating them totally by 2050.

President Biden canceled nearly 6 Billion dollars in student loan debt. 78,000 borrowers who work in public sector jobs, teachers, nurses, social workers, firefighters etc will have their debt totally forgiven. An additional 380,000 public service workers will be informed that they qualify to have their loans forgiven over the next 2 years. The Biden Administration has now forgiven $143.6 Billion in student loan debt for 4 million Americans since the Supreme Court struck down the original student loan forgiveness plan last year.

Under Pressure from the administration and Democrats in Congress Drugmaker AstraZeneca caps the price of its inhalers at $35. AstraZeneca joins rival Boehringer Ingelheim in capping the price of inhalers at $35, the price the Biden Admin capped the price of insulin for seniors. The move comes as the Federal Trade Commission challenges AstraZeneca’s patents, and Senator Bernie Sanders in his role as Democratic chair of the Senate Health Committee investigates drug pricing.

The Department of Justice sued Apple for being an illegal monopoly in smartphones. The DoJ is joined by 16 state attorneys general. The DoJ accuses Apple of illegally stifling competition with how its apps work and seeking to undermining technologies that compete with its own apps.

Apparently he had been down in the dump since coming here 8 months ago.

When the man told you this a familiar feeling rose in your tummy, and a heat spread up your neck trailing over your cheeks.

That’s how you ended up with 2 giant suit cases, a large duffel bag, and an oversized carry-on bag full of your belongings.

And now, your uber had just called to inform you that his car had broken down, and he was infact unable to get you.

You had been redirected in the app to another driver.

Who was 50 minutes out.

You look at the time.

You had been flying for over 24 hours since you left Japan.

You decided the time it would take to wait then make the 30 minute drive into the city would eat up any hopes of you getting ready before you go meet Shoyo.

So you do as he says.

You should have understood what he meant by that.

It was a hint to prepare yourself for the ride ahead.

Your 30 minute drive was easily cut in half by the man.

You saw your life flash before your eyes at least 4 times.

“Alright, well i’ll help you with your bags then leave ya to it! The bar we’re going to is straight down the road, a 4 minute walk to be exact! So we’ll meet you there!”

He grabs your bags easily, much to your dismay and against all your arguments and protests, wanting to help.

Taking you up to the apartment you finally answer all his questions about how the flying was, and he listened to your brief rant about air fare and how it was all a scam.

Laughing and interjecting where he needed to.

He showed you around his apartment a bit, then showed you to his guest room.

It was nice, clean and organized. Surprisingly for a 23 year old bachelor pad.

Going through your normal routine, you take it slower than usual, now having spared time to do so.

Finally after doing your hair and makeup perfect, you slip on your outift.

It’s simple and cute.

You did this on purpose, there’s no denying you had feelings for your best friend.

An hour later and you and Shoyo found your way on the dance floor. You guys are facing each other and dancing care-free.

For those on tumblr not in the know, Mark Zuckerberg lobbied the United States Congress to ban Tiktok from the United States after proving difficulty to overcome the loss of users to Tiktok. Through gifts and stocks, the House Energy and Commerce Committee successfully banned Tiktok. It needs to be very clear to those who have not been able to pay attention: The Committee interviewed Tiktok's CEO with questions that did not relate to Tiktok but instead to META. This precedent is very alarming. What is fine for one, is not the other- even if the other isn't participating.

Some key points:

Tiktok stores (stored, depending on what day you see this) all United States data on US soil in Texas and gives backdoor entry to the NSA. - This is important for the United States to check for the bad people on all platforms.

Listed members on the committee asked questions of activities Tiktok does not participate in but all of META does. Giving us immediate confirmation our government is fine with domestic platforms selling our data without consent.

An incredibly concerning detail showed its face while this was going down. All META platforms have access to every device's data using the same WIFI you connect to and they use that data.

META has given me the urge to puke for several years but last year was a moment of true question of how I move forward in a world that already seemingly has my data, even if I did not consent to the passing around of it.

When META decided to include AI in their system after investors seemed to require everyone to do so, the question of safety crossed my mind. META had announced the platforms were using everything you produce and have produced (posts, videos, photos) to not just train their own AI system, but they were also sending your information to a 3rd party as well. This included a setting toggle for consent that was default ON.

When the masses found out and toggled it off, META redesigned the Settings page to make it harder for you to find the consent option. They also made it so it wasn't just a "toggle" but now you had to write to them.

When the masses found out again (because we don't want this) how to get there, they redesigned the settings page again, hid the consent deeper, and required you to write to them with proof they even used your information... So that you can consent or not to consent to use their information.

I have been on this app since 2008 and relied heavily on this website when I was 14 while trying to escape the all seeing eyes I was friends with on Facebook. During this, tumblr became an amazing news resource for bills about to pass that endangered every bit of what the internet is known for: free speech and free of choice.

Back then, this site was all I had. I worshipped Tumblr for giving me emotional outlets and outside opinions during a very rough and miserable transition as a teen. So when Tumblr shared Bills trying to regulate our internet that would prevent reaching sites like Tumblr, I campaigned to my 150 student school and the two 1000 student public schools near me to reach out to our representatives, especially those 18 year olds waiting for a new horizon. With this, our representative and our governor in South Carolina, reached out to us at the time, letting us know they didn't realize how loved these spaces were and that they needed protecting. Communicating knowledge is powerful.

Having sites like Tumblr and Reddit circulate incoming bills like this was required to know about it. No one on Facebook saw any of that coming and they definitely won’t find out now with Zuckerberg making sure of it.

I have always seen the importance of internet regulation but for whatever reason (propaganda pushing) the People who work for us (reps, congress, the house, the committees) always wanted to pass bills that prevented people from talking and accessing new information.

The Tiktok ban passed by our government is not a good sign for anyone who uses the internet. The total amount of Americans who use this app to create community, careers, businesses, market their art, is at 102.3 million. That's a shit ton of businesses and communities that just end on the 19th of January.

And you might think, well why wouldn't they backup to another platform and I am sure many will, but Tiktok has such a unique algorithm that actually pushes businesses into the limelight and because of that, there is a massive community there that uplifts businesses that are falling behind. Currently, there is no other algorithm on US soil that compares to just how much it uplifts accounts that don't do well starting out. We lost so many creators after Vine because no other app could translate the humor and creativity. It's going to be a bigger loss after Tiktok goes because of that same issue.

If they are willing to ban a site that is very minimally connected to China, an incredibly huge resource for Americans for everything and anything and all for an increase in paycheck, what else will they be banning in the future when money is waved in their faces by one entity? They already went for one where the American people are heavily reliant on and one that is supposed to be protected under free speech and free of choice. If META wants something dead, give it a year, and it will die.

The Internet and social platforms have always been protected by free speech and freedom of choice. But these aspects have also been on the chopping block since the wild wild west of internet. I fear, this will not stop with just Tiktok.

MASTERMIND SPOILERS

So a lovely user over on the bird app already wrote a beautiful thread on this (their name is Razz and they’re an English teacher) so hop on over there and read their take on this. I’m studying English at my university currently and writing a thesis on Shakespeare so I thought I would take inspiration from their post on the bird app and transfer that information here so we can clear up the Stolitz duet section in the song “Mastermind” from an English, and as is my specialty, a Shakespearean perspective.

So sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but there was no Stolitz confession in Mastermind as confirmed by Vivzie but I want to tell you why. There’s a moment during Stolas’ confession to the court where the setting transitions to a place that looks suspiciously like the backdrop to the “Look My Way” music video (this happens at the lyrics “I have no regrets/I have regrets”. All the way until Satan cuts them off. This is a space for personal contemplation and Blitz is also there. This isn’t because Blitz is hearing Stolas’ inner thoughts or vice verse but in order to show the audience that what both characters are singing IS what they are thinking internally.

This is, what is called in English and Theatre terms, a soliloquy. The definition of a soliloquy is the act of a character speaking their thoughts aloud, often when alone but sometimes WITH OTHERS, but the kicker that makes this different from a monologue, is that the words are just their thoughts and none of the CHARACTERS can hear them. Soliloquy’s are purely for the benefit of the audience to understand what a character is thinking at a certain moment. Think “To be or not to be” from Hamlet, “Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow” from Macbeth, or the opening Soliloquy from Richard III “Now is the winter of our discontent”.

All these soliloquies are very different in terms of their place in their plays and are meant to show the audience completely different moods (deep depression and unaliving ideation from Hamlet, futility and mortality from Macbeth, and explanation of unhappiness/the introduction to an evil character in Richard III. All of them however show the audience deep and strong emotions that are played out by the characters that carry them through their respective plays.

This last point gives me hope. Although what we got wasn’t a confession, the fact that the love Blitz and Stolas have for each other was a large focus of both of their soliloquies tells me that that love and that emotion will eventually be revealed in show by words or action and bring them together.

Sometimes I get apprehensive about sharing how I look because there's the ongoing battle and worry if I am good enough. It stems a lot from my upbringing and the area I grew up in. 

I was adopted and brought to the US when I was 18 months old and I grew up in a poor city in Appalachia without any Native community or group. In 2019, I decided to do my first DNA test due to being an adoptee and I was hopeful I'd find relatives through the app. Unfortunately, I did not but I was able to confirm the beginning of my reconnection journey. With the results, it showed I am 97.9% connected to Russia with a breakdown of regions that are Native regions: Novaya Zemlya/Arkhangelsk (Nenets), Altai Republic (Altai), and Krasnador Krai (Circassian).

With those regions in mind, I decided to follow up with Ancestry to see, once again, if I was also able to find relatives. I was not, but the DNA aspect confirmed the already existing test that I've taken.

Being fortunate and in contact with my family, I brought up the regions that DNA pulled from and talked to my family about Nenets and Altaian lineage. They confirmed these regions and lineages and also said my biological mother grew up Tatar. It is very important to have family confirmation, as DNA is not your answer to who you are, it's merely a foundation point that you need to build on. With DNA, you can start a journey, but without confirmation of family/community, it's still just DNA and not full reconnection.

With a lot of research, I decided to get a red chin line that extends half of my chin as an attribute of reconnection. The artist who did this has rules for Natives as he is Native himself: I will not tattoo it you do not know what you are getting done. The red line means spiritual growth, maturity, and connectiveness to ancestors. Usually there is a major transition in life to have these chin lines or facial markings complete. I clinically died May 8, 2022 and got my line completed in summer of 2022. Black, blue, and red are colors that the Altaians will use for facial tattooing. Red is used to indicate a healing role within society. It was also chosen to assure there would no misunderstandings with other tribes and to separate ourselves.

Chin tattoos and other facial tattooing has died off significantly within the Soviet Union due to the forced assimilation and the liquidation of people. A lot of people were forced to lose their culture and those reconnecting are tying to preserve what's left.

I am honored to share my Indigenous lineage and to put our Natives on the map. I do not regret getting into activism. I do not regret reconnecting and continuing what is right. I will continue to be a voice for my people and my family. We will not be silent. We are still here.

Last time, Nomoto and her new online friend had a watch party and discussed the nature of asexuality and homosexuality coexisting, and Nomoto shared about being in love with Kasuga; I'm a big fan of Yako. The ladies managed to connect more with Nagumo, and we learned she has an eating disorder where she can't eat in front of strangers. However, she did make donuts with them and took some home. Kasuga also managed to sever ties with her father after thinking about it and talking with other women. She asked if Nomoto would support her, and of course she did. I will never stop thinking about the Chosen Family scene.

Episode 9

Yes, Yako, coach her. We cannot let them exit this season without talking through their feelings for each other.

I have never identified with a character more than Yako. I would also enjoy my food and wine while watching my friend sweat over the crush.

Yako backstory! It really is hard in your teens when you are deeply out of alignment with other queers about sex.

The power went out and Kasuga immediately went to check on Nomoto. You love to see it.

Their project manager is at least being upfront with them that they're being asked to rebuild the entire app.

Sorry, Kasuga, but it's not often we escape compulsory heterosexuality and still have a positive interaction in a sales environment like this.

Nagumo, I love you. You have finally given us a reason to have Kasuga voice her thoughts aloud.

This show really said plainly that the presumption of heteronormativity hurts and upsets people who don't fit that mold.

I really love this show detailing how harrowing pining is when you don't know if the other person is queer and the relationship you've built means so much to you.

Episode 21, you aired on Valentine's Day. Please don't let me down.

I didn't expect Kasuga's family troubles to end with that one phone call, and here goes the aunt downplaying Kasuga's feelings and bulldozing over her expressed boundaries.

P5X Summary

Please keep in mind this game still has no official English translation, so this summary uses a mix of what happens visually, what I understand of the Japanese dialogue, and Google translate for the Chinese text, in order to get the broader picture here. This will be focused on summing up everything that happens overall, without getting into a line-by-line translation.

Contrary to this blog’s name, this post is going to have as little speculation as possible, and stick to confirmed facts.

The fourth beta covers the entirety of the first two Palaces in the game, and stops almost immediately after the second Palace ruler's change of heart press conference.

P5X starts out somewhere extremely familiar: the exact same place P5 and P5R start, Joker's escape from Sae's casino Palace after the Phantom Thieves have fought her Shadow. However, the screen glitches a bit as this cutscene plays out.

You can see a video of the beginning here, though this is from the third beta, and doesn't reflect the glitching effect added in the fourth beta. I'll also summarize:

The camera moves in towards Sae's Palace just like in P5/P5R, except periodically glitching slightly. We eventually see the casino guests, then guards, then Joker. Just before gameplay begins, Joker briefly glitches into the P5X protagonist, before glitching back into Joker. Joker then begins to escape and encounters a shadow which the player has to defeat, just like in P5/P5R. However, after defeating the shadow, someone else attacks Joker, who looks just like the P5X protagonist except with a white mask. Joker and the protagonist fight, but the P5X protagonist wins, and smiles at Joker before firing his gun. In a bedroom, we then see the protagonist shoot awake as if from a nightmare, to the sound of an alarm on his phone going off.

The protagonist then gets out of bed, gets dressed, and puts in airpods, pressing play on the song Ambitions and Visions on his phone, leading into the game's opening animation.

After the opening, we see an owl sitting in Shibuya. It looks around for a moment before flying off.

It then transitions to a shot of Kokatsu Academy, the protagonist sitting in class, with a form about what he wants to do after high school. He taps his pencil on the blank form, and looks out the window. His teacher, Kumi Katayama, instructs the students to fill it out with their names (and then the player is prompted to name the protagonist).

After writing his name, the protagonist feels sleepy, and drifts off. He then wakes up in the Velvet Room for the first time.

Igor welcomes the protagonist to the Velvet Room, and introduces him to himself and Merope. He says the protagonist is here because he made a "choice". The protagonist is only there briefly before he’s woken up by the girl sitting in front of him in class.

Katayama comes over and reprimands them, then collects the forms. As class ends, she warns everyone there was another "phantom" incident, and to be careful going home.

After getting out of class, the protagonist steps out into the hallway, but Katayama calls him over to talk about his empty form, and asks if he knows what he wants for the future. She seems troubled that he doesn’t really know.

After, he runs into some girls gossiping and blocking the stairs. They mention an update on an app, and that they think "Magatsukami" will recognize the person as a "phantom". One of them suggests maybe the police will get involved, but the others say when you meet a phantom, you think there's nothing that can be done. The protagonist has a dialogue option to try to ask them to move out of the way, but it’s like something stops him from doing it. His thought bubble describes the idea of asking them to move as "gradually disappearing".

Another student comes to his rescue, and suggests the girls sit and chat in the cafeteria instead. The girls bow in apology to both her and the protagonist before running off, calling her Tanemura-senpai, a bit starstruck that she talked to them. She tells them not to run in the hallway.

Tanemura comments that students are acting more "selfishly" these days, and also mentions Wonder could've just communicated with them himself, before leaving.

As the protagonist goes to exit the school, he walks by the owl, who’s landed atop the shoe lockers. It mutters to itself, wondering if it's really this guy, and saying something's been stolen. The owl then flies out the window when the protagonist looks in its direction.

As the protagonist steps through the front gates of the school, a girl walks by him, notably not wearing shoes. She says nothing but "...".

As the protagonist walks to the train station, he hears two girls in front of him gossip about a video showing a phantom.

At the station, he sees a woman trip (or otherwise fall), and the player’s given a dialogue prompt relating to helping her, but something vague once again seems to stop him. He seems to describe his thoughts as becoming "thinner" when this happens. The train leaves.

The girl in the grey dress from slightly earlier reappears, now on the roof of a building across the street from the train station, and throws herself off of it. The protagonist is the only one in the station to really react to this (the others just comment passively, one even saying they don't blame her because there's nothing to live for), but after they leave, he gets that vague feeling again, and says his "sense of disobedience" is disappearing.

Still, he seems frustrated he can't do anything for the girl. This reaction convinces the owl that the protagonist is the one he's looking for.

The next part is a series of cutscenes close together. You can watch it in gameplay (41:07 - 52:59) since it works better visually, but I’ll summarize it, too:

The protagonist boards a train, noticing the girl from his class also sitting on this train, and spots a strange app on his phone. He tries to delete it, but it comes back. The owl sits across from him, and says he's here, as promised. The strange app reappears. The owl continues to say that not being aware of an ability, and not having the ability at all, are two different things. The owl hopes the protagonist is the former case. It’s then cut off by screams, as a person on a bike rides into the train car. The person rushes the protagonist, causing him to accidentally tap and open the strange app. When he opens his eyes, he’s in Mementos, and the strange owl is there too, though he's changed into a more humanoid form. The owl introduces himself as Ruferu, and briefly explains the basics of this world being tied to humanity's Collective Unconscious, and that people's desires, including the protagonist's, are being stolen. This causes them to lose their will and stop caring. He says he can show the protagonist the exit, but as they head there they’re ambushed by shadows, leading to the protagonist getting attacked, and awakening to his Persona, Janosik.

Ruferu teaches the protagonist the basics of combat, but then they run into one last big shadow right by the escalators. Ruferu identifies it as being related to the theft of desires in this area, and the protagonist, remembering the girl from earlier, seems to become determined to fight it.

Ruferu reveals his own Persona, Rob Roy, and they take the shadow down together.

They encounter a strange woman on their way out of Mementos, who Ruferu identifies as a Shadow, but after he determines she’s not a threat, he says they can talk to her later, and the two of them run by her. She disappears.

When they leave, the protagonist is shocked to find himself in Shibuya, with his clothes back to normal and Ruferu back to being a "normal" owl.

Ruferu explains that he changes appearance in the other world due to having a strong "will of desire", and refers to their outfits as their "armor of the heart" that appears when they're recognized as an enemy. He then admits that he doesn't know everything, and some refer to it as the "spirit of rebellion" instead. Wanting to investigate something else, and give the protagonist a chance to rest, Ruferu suggests they part ways for today, but mentions he has a "job" in mind for the protagonist in the future.

Ruferu flies away, and the protagonist heads home. He doesn’t notice the blonde girl who sits in front of him in class standing nearby, who is puzzled to see him here in Shibuya.

When he goes to sleep, he wakes up in the Velvet Room again, and Merope and Igor tell him about “ruin”. Igor gives the protagonist some advice: to resist ruin, he should connect with others who have desires, and hone his own desire. He’s woken up by Ruferu pecking at his head.

Ruferu refers to the protagonist as his “business partner”, and says they’ll talk more about the "job" during the protagonist’s lunch break at school later. Ruferu’s Confidant is established. As the protagonist leaves for school, his mom texts him; his parents are at the airport, having left for a trip abroad today that they won't return from for a while.

(The protagonist’s outfit is changeable by the player from this point on, so in scenes outside of school and Mementos, it may not always be consistent in my screenshots, haha.)

When he leaves the house, he runs into a woman who introduces herself as Kayo Tomiyama. She knew him when he was younger and comments that he’s grown up into a handsome man, in the tone of a relative being surprised at how big you’ve gotten since they last saw you. She's the protagonist's neighbor and family friend, and, recalling that his parents are abroad now, says that if he has any trouble he can come to her, jokingly calling herself "big sister Tomiyama". Upon noticing the protagonist's uniform, she also mentions that her “Darling”, her husband, went to Kokatsu as well, making sure the protagonist knows the directions to get there.

After she leaves and the protagonist continues on to school, he runs into Merope in Shibuya, staring at one of the Rise posters. It gives her an idea related to "Personas" and "II", and she opens a Velvet Room door next to the poster and heads through, seeming to have barely noticed the protagonist in the first place.

As the protagonist waits for his train, a man stepping off the train bumps into him, then smiles kind of smugly and waves it off when the protagonist looks at him.

The protagonist gets on the train and leaves, but the camera continues to follow the man for a bit. He spots a woman in the station, and something seems to overcome him. He follows after her.

On the train with the protagonist, there are some Kokatsu girls gossiping about a hot guy, which the protagonist realizes is about another student on the train, whom the girls refer to as “Ikenami-kun” from Kiga High School.

When the train arrives, another Kokatsu girl bumps into the protagonist on her way out, and the protagonist catches her before she falls back.

She apologizes and hurries off the train, but the protagonist notices she dropped her bus pass, and picks it up.

He finds her in the station, and returns it to her, which she thanks him for profusely. After she runs off again, the protagonist takes note of the fact that he was actually able to help her (as opposed to before awakening his Persona, when that vague feeling kept stopping him).

The protagonist then heads on to school, and the view briefly cuts back to the man from earlier for another short cutscene.

He forces his way through the crowd to reach the woman he's following, and slams into her, knocking her to the ground. She looks up at him and, clearly scared, runs off.

The man smirks to himself, then moves on.

Returning to the protagonist, we see him in Katayama's math class.
