having just read the emails from an actor rant on how hamlet should really only wear the classic all black outfit, I would like to argue back by proposing some alternate options that to me seem viable:

as much as i love the "hamlet's father was kinda a shitty dad when he was alive" reading of the play—and i'm fully aware of how much textual support there is for it—i'll also always have a soft spot for productions that portray hamlet's idolization of his father and failure to see him as the real, deeply flawed man he was while also portraying just how much hamlet was loved. something about meeting hamlet as a sad, grief-struck, melodramatic guy who seems validly pissed and in mourning but still kind of a dick about it and then getting to the scene where he meets the ghost. and you just watch him turn into the kid who loves his dad right before your eyes and you're like "oh, he's been missing him so much this entire time, hasn't he". because you know he just lost his dad but you don't really realize until then that he just lost his dad, that he's so young and probably feels like half his heart is missing. you watch him cry after the ghost leaves as he talks about how he'd forget anything if it meant remembering his father, and you think about how weird it must've been for him to return to elsinore for the first time since his dad's death, which happened less than a month ago at this point, and how weird it still must feel to be there without him, how deeply he must be feeling that absence and pain. of course denmark feels like a prison to him because how could it be anything else without the person who's always made it feel like home.
#especially when he's clearly upset from act 1 scene 1-3 and obviously mourning but also relatively stoic#or about as stoic as hamlet can get#until he sees the ghost and then he just breaks down and you see it all pour out#that's the good shit right there#hamlet#words words words

turns out you can spend $18 million on your filmed production of Hamlet and cast all the great Hollywood stars of the 90’s to act in it, and it will still never beat that one performance by a kid in a texas barn with an audience of 40, performed during in a 110F heat wave
#anyways I saw a production of hamlet that knocked my fucking socks off in a barn in 110F heat#the whole cast was ranging from good-for-local-theater to actually-really-good#but hamlet was something else entirely. transcendental theater experience#anybody in or around central texas/Houston/Cstat who wants to see an incredible Hamlet performance hmu for details#female actors cross-casted to play Hamlet just feels so very very right#hamlet#willy shakes#this is a Kenneth Branagh Hamlet hate blog

the absence of horatios in hamlet adaptations somehow feels gayer than their presence
#like you feel the presence of this One Guy will distract from the core of what you’re doing here and delegitimise the relationship between#hamlet and ophelia#i agree that that shouldn’t be the main theme but also his absence is loud and unless a production works really hard at it#it’s a noticeable decision that can lead to a work feeling less complex than it could be#because unless you’re doing something interesting with his absence#anyone who’s engaging with the work is just going to be like oh they took away a whole figure within the story huh wonder what they’re#going to do with its absence#and too often the answer is sorta nothing?#besides increased political commentary#which is great but also you’re just like why couldn’t you do that and have this figure here#and the best answer I can think of is that there are gay implications#which is. something#give hamlet weird little buddies 2k24#love increased Ophelia time but it’s hard to be like woah their relationship is so asymmetrical (which these productions have been angling#for) when seemingly this is the relationship hamlet pours the whole of himself into with only brief moments of disrespect that are weird#when that’s not played right#it feels disconcordant#aargh

Damn the time as come I am really writing a geological description of a fictive place XD
yeah i like looking at maps & video game world and trying to decipher how the mountains were created or what stones are in there.
So hm yeah I try to do smt coherent with what we know about Yharnam but I'm not sure what I am doing either
#part 1: a scholar's dream#writing#geology#I need to restrain myself from talking about synclinal/anticlinal for freaking hills and a valley. people are not gonna understand!!#also funny thing the rocks & sand at the fishing hamlet are mostly dark right?#that mean either there's a lot of iron or it's volcanic stones#part 1 : a scholar’s dream

in hxh when gon said "killua, you have it easy...since it means nothing to you" and when antigone said to her sister ismene "you will not die, not with me you won't. you had nothing to do with this" amnd in code ge ass when suzaku said to lelouch "nothing that happens now is any of your concern! your very existence is a mistake! you need to be erased from this earth!" collecting many such phrases
#another one is chu2's “you're of no use to me alone” to pareo#rereading antigone is crazy for me because something about the themes and dialogue are so cg to me.#code geassis a beautiful classic tragedy NOT well if you really pick and choose. i dont mean to endorse cg but anyways lelouch was reading#antigone for inspiration for zero requiem this is perfectly logical a claim to make because he was reading hamlet in the first episode or w#atever. like “unmourned friendless i am led away. the path is ready. they sing no wedding song” “to my tomb#my wedding my home/the eternal vigil of the grave....i am the last and lesat. before my time#i am descending to that world; but i am returning home as well#from an exile" for the interpretation that zero requiem was a wedding and a lovers suicide and all. well there are some parallels#<- guy who keeps forgetting you cant put commas in the tags#antigone is kind of like if suzaku successfully killed himself and nunnally tried to die with lelouch right at the end. also if the emperor#was still alive and had lelouch killed etc#...among other many things. among? 📮#suicide mention#tw suicide#code geass spoilers#pip speaks

funnily enough i think moreso than distasteful jokes or willful misinterpretations what really bothers me when it comes to representations of Her are people not picking up on the fact that shes a freak alt girl
#ill get screenshots tomorrow but like what do we know about her personality wise?#1. purportedly the sort of person who would greatly enjoy kirumis lab on an aesthetic level#2. weird and incredibly intensive creative hobby#3. presumably a vkei fan???#4. even more purported but most likely contains some kernel of truth: notably sad and gloomy due to miserable life#5. Her Bangs Covering One Eye Hairstyle.#of course this may not always come through in sense of dress but i can tell when people draw her and think shes not like.#a teen girl who has never interacted face to face with another teen girl and is convinced shes Ophelia From Hamlet in real life#t3tw#im so taken by the madness right now its not even funny . im literally taken by the madness btw

hi it’s me again here to annoy you about hamlet - you’re on act 2 right? That’s the beginning of the “fuck around” stage of the play as I would call it. A lot of it is setup for what happens in act 3, which really gets the ball rolling imo. But! Since you’ve started, you’ve met my favorite character (horatio) who I can’t really talk about in full perspective until you’re finished but… he really is an important character even if he doesn’t seem important at certain points. Do you have a favorite yet? (sorry I don’t want to pester im just really excited to hear what you think about it)
Hi again! It's not annoying, don't worry; you're allowed to express your interest and excitement :)
I just finished act 2 and am now at the beginning of act 3! And I think I can see what you mean--I'm not far, but it seems like things are about to Start Happening. We've got the ghosts, we've got the foul players, we've got the background. Now it's time to Do It.
I don't think I know any of the characters well enough yet to have favorites, though I am intrigued by Ophelia. And of course having more info about Hamlet makes him more appealing by default for the time being. But! I have seen you talk about Horatio quite frequently, though in all honesty I didn't read the posts in full because I hadn't read Hamlet. I'll keep my eye on him though :)
And of course, Polonius and Claudius's schemes and what each of them are doing intrigue me, even though I may not like them!
#hamlet#quil's queries#moonlarked#let me check. i'm on a3s2#hamlet's little nunnery spiel was amusing#like bro I think she got it you said it like 4 times#get thee to a nunnery...#also shout out to the scene summaries at the beginning of each one on the left side of the page <3#i haven't read a lot of shakespeare so I do need the help and vocab sometimes#even though its tedious to read like that#oh this just reminded me of this one girl from my class...#who would always ask 'what's the point? how is this going to help me in the real world?'#including about a few shakespeare plays#and I'm just like. shaking you shaking you shaking you!! not everything is about immediately functional application!#sometimes its about learning and engaging with art you aoihrgawn#she tied it into some weird brand of feminism too#where it's like. yes. feminism is good. however. there are other lenses at your disposal as well you know right?#you can't be 100% feminist lens 100% of the time you are going to MISS things#and you ARE#anyway#apparently I had some annoyance stored up#interesting

I remember seeing a post when I first joined tumblr in like 2015 or something where everyone was talking about how people’s favourite characters are never the main character. But I’m realizing that mine definitely are. Not for every single piece of media, but pretty consistently among the genres that I enjoy I find that my favourite characters are the main character.
#must be my hero complex 🤷♀️#i relate#my thoughts#seriously though#some examples:#elsa (frozen)#hamlet (hamlet)#elle woods (legally blonde)#jean valjean (les mis)#jaron (the false Prince series)#any Barbie movie character#Sherlock (I’m thinking original acd stories)#before it was bad my favourite character from Harry Potter was Harry himself#idk I can’t think of anything else right now but I know there are more
