One of these is a murderous psychopath.... the answer may surprise you... (it's Mark Corrigan)
[also Dave from Mystic River and Dr. Nathan Bronfman from Human Nature and the guy from Nothing to Lose but I can't have so many Tim Robbins ones ripppp...he just plays that kind of character too well.]

having just read the emails from an actor rant on how hamlet should really only wear the classic all black outfit, I would like to argue back by proposing some alternate options that to me seem viable:

Circe by Madeline Miller
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The venn diagram of books tiktok loves and books i love has a small overlap, and mostly it's just this book. Greek myths are so interesting on their own, but something about a retelling that looks to the characters who often get left behind in the details? BRILLIANT!! It reads like listening to an old friend, and I think you would really enjoy that. Light and fun, but tinged with these bigger questions and hopes.
Circe it such a captivating character, even in the way Homer wrote her, but Miller really elevates her to be a heroine in her own right. Strong and brave, and vulnerable when it feels right. You'd love her Mel, and really the end of the day, you want to see her thrive. I think it's a powerful emotion an author can evoke.

as much as i love the "hamlet's father was kinda a shitty dad when he was alive" reading of the play—and i'm fully aware of how much textual support there is for it—i'll also always have a soft spot for productions that portray hamlet's idolization of his father and failure to see him as the real, deeply flawed man he was while also portraying just how much hamlet was loved. something about meeting hamlet as a sad, grief-struck, melodramatic guy who seems validly pissed and in mourning but still kind of a dick about it and then getting to the scene where he meets the ghost. and you just watch him turn into the kid who loves his dad right before your eyes and you're like "oh, he's been missing him so much this entire time, hasn't he". because you know he just lost his dad but you don't really realize until then that he just lost his dad, that he's so young and probably feels like half his heart is missing. you watch him cry after the ghost leaves as he talks about how he'd forget anything if it meant remembering his father, and you think about how weird it must've been for him to return to elsinore for the first time since his dad's death, which happened less than a month ago at this point, and how weird it still must feel to be there without him, how deeply he must be feeling that absence and pain. of course denmark feels like a prison to him because how could it be anything else without the person who's always made it feel like home.

turns out you can spend $18 million on your filmed production of Hamlet and cast all the great Hollywood stars of the 90’s to act in it, and it will still never beat that one performance by a kid in a texas barn with an audience of 40, performed during in a 110F heat wave

hi it’s me again here to annoy you about hamlet - you’re on act 2 right? That’s the beginning of the “fuck around” stage of the play as I would call it. A lot of it is setup for what happens in act 3, which really gets the ball rolling imo. But! Since you’ve started, you’ve met my favorite character (horatio) who I can’t really talk about in full perspective until you’re finished but… he really is an important character even if he doesn’t seem important at certain points. Do you have a favorite yet? (sorry I don’t want to pester im just really excited to hear what you think about it)
Hi again! It's not annoying, don't worry; you're allowed to express your interest and excitement :)
I just finished act 2 and am now at the beginning of act 3! And I think I can see what you mean--I'm not far, but it seems like things are about to Start Happening. We've got the ghosts, we've got the foul players, we've got the background. Now it's time to Do It.
I don't think I know any of the characters well enough yet to have favorites, though I am intrigued by Ophelia. And of course having more info about Hamlet makes him more appealing by default for the time being. But! I have seen you talk about Horatio quite frequently, though in all honesty I didn't read the posts in full because I hadn't read Hamlet. I'll keep my eye on him though :)
And of course, Polonius and Claudius's schemes and what each of them are doing intrigue me, even though I may not like them!

I remember seeing a post when I first joined tumblr in like 2015 or something where everyone was talking about how people’s favourite characters are never the main character. But I’m realizing that mine definitely are. Not for every single piece of media, but pretty consistently among the genres that I enjoy I find that my favourite characters are the main character.
