Stephen Sondheim's Pacific Overtures, you should see it.

Unfortunately the original 1976 production (my fav) can only be viewed as a mildly crappy digitized copy that’s up on YouTube... the lyrics/dialogue are, at times, indiscernible.

All I want is for as many people as possible to watch it. I want you to see it, I want your friends to see it. And I want MY friends to see it.

So it came to this: I made subtitles for Pacific Overtures. The project took me approximately 30 hours altogether (AI transcription was no help at all). I’m hoping everyone who already loves the show will be pleased to have them, and more than anything I hope subtitles will build a bridge for anyone who has wanted to see the show but couldn’t get past the limitations of what’s available.

I’m happy to hear any feedback you might have. (I’m open to making changes and releasing another version if needed.)

I've used lyrics from Take Me Out to the Ball Game & Blank Space.

Even the news is covering it. 

That's fucking ridiculous. There's an animated graphic, a live tracker of where his plane is, a moving dot over the Atlantic, like it's Christmas Eve and he's Santa Claus.

Eddie's gonna make it. He was always gonna make it, even as the press ran the numbers, the miles, and milked every ounce of drama out of it.

He made game one, and game four, and now he's racing back from playing Wembley in London to make it for game seven. The media has tried to sell the idea that Steve wanted the World Series to go to seven, just so Eddie would be able to attend.

Eddie's glad he's getting to see it, of course he is, but if they could have swept it in four, or locked it down in five or six, that would have been fucking awesome. Even if that meant Eddie missed seeing it live, and had to watch on television, in the middle of the night, across the world.

There are a shitton of tiktoks every week, dissecting their every move, looking for easter eggs. Eddie is just living his life, even if a million people are always watching him like a fucking hawk.

Goodie is walking back from the beer garden in the stadium, carrying his plastic cup in his mouth as he fiddles with something in his hands. Not spilling a goddamn drop. Eddie can only see this because he's being broadcast onto the stadium jumbotron.

When he climbs the stairs into the suite, Eddie asks, "Where's Gareth?"

"Got spotted. Now he's taking pictures. I just slipped away unnoticed. Sucker," Goodie says, putting his cup down on the table.

"Unnoticed, huh?" Eddie teases. He won't tell him. He'll just wait until Goodie sees it online for himself. "There's free beer back there you know?" Eddie asks. Neither one of them needed to venture out into the crowd.

Goodie shrugs, "I wanted this kind."

He could have had that kind, could have had any kind, if he'd just asked for it. But no, he wanted to be out among the people. 

None of them are particularly fond of baseball, but they are fond of Steve, so here they are. The whole band doesn't always come, but it's the championship game, so they did.

And the score has been 1-0 forever. 

Wayne is pacing. Unlike them, he loves baseball, even if he's been a little turncoat, switching teams like a lifetime of dedication meant nothing at all. He's gotten a little shit from his friends back home, but Eddie thinks it's honestly very sweet. Eddie loves that Wayne likes Steve enough to put him and his team as his number one with a bullet, now.

It helps that Steve's part of a fucking dynasty. It's fun to win, even Eddie gets that.

Wayne doesn't always hang out in suites. More often than not, he'd rather sit in the stands. Focus on the baseball, not the celebrity that's now surrounding it. But Wayne's been dragged into their highly publicized love affair, and now he's starting to get recognized all on his own, so Eddie worries. 

Plus, he'd rather have him right here, where they can spend time together.

"What's the count?" Eddie asks. 

"3-2," Wayne answers.

Eddie's distracted, filling his plate with the various appetizers that came with the steep price of the private suite. Sliders, pigs in a blanket, and all kinds of other fancified versions of comfort food. He's just scooping some mac & cheese on his plate when he hears his main guitar riff from Buckwild. He puts down his plate, making his way to the big windows just in time to see Steve step towards the batter's box. 

Steve only changes his walk-up music to Corroded Coffin when Eddie's in attendance. He currently walks-up to Milkshake, which is fucking hilarious. He's one of the first openly out players, and he really leans into it, changing up his walk-up music, usually to something a little queer. Eddie knows it's partially to poke fun at himself first, before anyone else can. 

But tonight, it's his song. Eddie's sure he's being broadcast on the jumbotron from some camera he can't even see, and may even be on live television. Eddie watches as Steve briefly points his bat, and at first Eddie thinks Steve's calling his shot, but no. Not unless he's intending to hit a foul ball.

No, he gestured at Eddie. At least where he assumed Eddie would be.

Eddie fiddles with the rings on his hand, moving from finger to finger, twisting them around and around as Steve swings and misses for the second time. Eddie can hardly watch, it makes him so nervous.

"What's the count?" Eddie asks. It's the only question he knows to ask.

"2-2," Wayne says from somewhere behind him. Wayne doesn't stand at the front when it's likely the camera is on them. Eddie gets it, he does, but he'd like him at his side. The windows are open tonight, and the fans in the seats in front of the suite have leaned up to talk to them, to get things signed, and Eddie has done it. They all have. Waving off security.

Nobody is being shitty, just excited, and Eddie's grateful he's been accepted by most of Steve's fans. There was always the fear that he'd be seen as a distraction, and sure, that's been a bit of the narrative, but Steve's in the goddamn World Series. His head is obviously still in the game.

Eddie signed a custom Corroded Coffin jersey with Steve's number on the back earlier, and if that wasn't fucking weird and delightful. And Harrington jerseys have been increasingly spotted at their gigs, from one in the crowd, to a dozen or more.

Steve takes the next ball, and Eddie was terrible at baseball as a kid. He swung at everything. He never had the self-control to wait for something good. 

He's glad he grew out of that, at least a little, because he waited, and now he has Steve. A goddamn home run in human form. 

Eddie's relieved when he hears the crack of the bat finally making contact with the ball, and he watches intently until Steve's safely on first, Eddie leaning out of the open box window, hanging onto the frame, screaming.

He rights himself, clapping hard as he spins in a circle, screaming some more.

Then, Eddie watches as Steve steals second on a wild pitch, and the stadium sound system blares to life with Gimme Three Steps.

Steve dusts himself off from his slide in, and Eddie is so fucking smitten. 

And his ass looks damn good in those pants. His milkshake did bring Eddie to the yard.

It's the seventh-inning stretch, and Eddie hears the familiar, "for it's one, two, three strikes, you're out," being sung by the entire stadium.

He's nervous now. More nervous than he ever is going on stage anymore.

They've made it this far, and he wants Steve to win the whole thing. 

They do win. Steve fielded a grounder, whipped it to first base, and with one last out, it was finally over. Gloves being thrown in the air, lots of hugs and jumping up and down.

Steve did it.

And Eddie smiles.

Steve isn't released, not yet. There'll be interviews, and a parade that Eddie unfortunately can't attend, so Eddie only gets a few minutes in the tunnel with him. Some stolen kisses and a silly groped handful, just giving Steve's cup a squeeze, to make him laugh. 

It's all too brief, but he'll see him soon. 

They go from the game straight back to the airport, Goodie and Gareth both pretty drunk after too many celebratory shots, leaving Jeff and him to babysit as they get wheels up, to head back across the pond. Their world tour, waiting.

They'll make it. 

Steve swears jet-lag is a choice, and Eddie's choosing to believe him.

Another city, and his turn on the big stage, as Eddie looks out towards the VIP tent. Steve waves with both hands over his head, making himself larger, more easily seen.

Steve attended a few Monday shows with Robin, when their schedules lined up enough to allow it. But now his season is over. He's a fucking world champion, and it's the offseason, which is Eddie's new favorite word.

If he'd known he'd fall in love with a sportsball guy, he would have made sure their tour had a lengthy break during this magical offseason.

Next year.

And Eddie is confident that next year is a given. That's how in he is with their relationship, with Steve. They both have their own lives, their own fame, their own increasingly busy schedules. But they make it work, because they want it to work.

The fans have dubbed all their crisscrossing travel as "if he wanted to, he would" and have been straight up swooning. 

Eddie likes that thought, because he does want to, and he knows Steve wants to, too.

He's committed to this thing, and so is Steve. And if that means flying for hours to be there for the important shit, even if you have to turn around and fly right back, well fuck, you do it. And you don't even think about it.

Eddie slips in a pop cover, mid-set, just being silly, because he wants to shout out Steve a little bit extra tonight. He sings and when he gets to "'cause you know I love the players, and you love the game" and the crowd gets behind it. Steve, too, if his hands in the air are any indication. 

He's a pop girlie at heart, and Eddie loves him for it.

Steve is comfortable in his own skin, and he likes what he likes. He's supportive of Eddie, of Corroded Coffin, and very demonstrative with his affection and admiration. The love is always free-flowing. But, heavy metal isn't his thing. Not really. And that's okay.

So, a little pop is injected for his benefit, Eddie saying 'I love you for who you are' right back.

Buckwild is last, is always last, and Steve's here, so that means a subtle lyric change. He only does it when Steve's in attendance, and it makes the crowd go wild. Changing one word is enough to send them into a frenzy, like they're part of something special and sacred.

They are.

When he approaches the lyric, Steve has moved closer, right at the stage, in front of the barricade, and puts his hand up to his ear, hyping the crowd, getting ready for it, and Eddie can hardly sing through his fucking smile.

When they exit the stage, the first face he sees is Steve's, and Steve opens his arms and Eddie hugs him, pulling back and kissing him, over and over.

He's the one. 

The one he loves.

The one he'll marry.

The one. Period.

Steve waves to the crowd that's gathered to watch, and then he puts his arm around Eddie's waist, ushering him away, one more show over.

In bed, Eddie rests his head against Steve's bare chest. These last few weeks have been different, brand new, and exciting. It's the first time they've really gotten to feel like they're coming home to each other. Getting to be in the same place for an extended period of time, Steve following the tour.

Steve brushes Eddie's bangs off his face, and kisses his forehead.

"You were amazing tonight," Steve whispers, and Eddie grins. 

"So were you, working the crowd," Eddie says.

Steve laughs, and Eddie loves it. Steve's not shy. He's had all the media training, probably more than Eddie, because he's got a brand, a team, to protect. Eddie just runs his mouth at-will, always has.

Steve doesn't hide backstage where Eddie can't see him, no, he always makes sure he's supporting Eddie out loud and with his whole goddamn chest.

So, because he wants to, he does.

Eddie dates a man for the first time, and Buck is completely 'Fine'. This is a preemptive rec because it is one chapter away from completion and I have been saving it to binge in one sitting but knowing Jenwyn and her incredible talent I guarantee this will be worth the read.

The Whole Story

Before we begin, a disclaimer: I believe that Taylor Swift and Karlie Kloss are in a romantic relationship together. I've come to this conclusion carefully by reading all the signs Taylor has given us through her lyrics, media presence, clothing & jewelry choices, marketing, visuals, and interviews. This is all a theory of what I think has gone down between Karlie and Taylor since 2013.

2013 & Earlier - The Beginning

VS Fashion Show 2013: The first official meeting of Karlie & Taylor was at the 2013 VS Fashion Show.

This may not have been their true first encounter (s/o @sophietv for her amazing work about this, she outlines all the times Kaylor interacted prior to the fashion show in 2013!).

According to a Teen Vogue interview in 2014, Taylor and Karlie were introduced to each other at the same time that Taylor met Emma Stone by Andrew Bevan of Teen Vogue. That was in 2008 at the Young Hollywood Awards.

After that first meeting in 2008, Taylor attended a number of fashion shows that Karlie walked in: Tommy Hilfiger Spring Show (9/16/2009); Rodarte Spring 2012 show in NYC (9/13/2011); Jean-Paul Gauthier in Paris (9/30/2012), Elie Saab Spring/Summer 2013 Show (10/3/2012).

Karlie & Taylor also both attended Roberto Cavalli's 40th Anniversary Party (9/30/2010) and the Met Gala in 2011. Teen Vogue included a quote from Karlie about the Met: "Taylor Swift. I was introduced to her at the Met Gala, and we joked about having a baking date!"

January 17th, 2012: The iconic Twitter interaction between Kaylor finally happens! Taylor's cover story with Vogue includes a quote about Karlie: "I love Karlie Kloss, I want to bake cookies with her!" Karlie tweets at her the same day the cover releases.

2013 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show

By the time the 2013 VS Show rolled around, I think they were already dating in some capacity, and the fashion show was a PR move. If Taylor & Karlie were going to become "close friends" in the public eye, they needed a high-profile, highly documented story about how they met to avoid questions about the nature of their close relationship.

Taylor performed I Knew You Were Trouble (Red) for the show, and she danced with Karlie on stage while 'snow' fell.

"So it goes, you two are dancing in a snow globe round and round." - You Are in Love, 1989

Karlie later revealed in an interview that she had gotten a dramatic haircut during a Vogue shoot just before the VS Fashion Show began. This haircut was a big deal- she changed her look completely without talking to anyone about it, and Vogue asked her to keep it a secret until the shoot dropped. So she showed the VS Fashion Show like "surprise! New hair!" which drew up quite a buzz. Taylor's hair was pretty blonde and long at the time, not fully bleached but certainly lightened up in comparison to her natural hair color.

Karlie posted a ton of pictures from this event (most of which were of her and Taylor) on her Instagram. She also starts posting really sappy Instagram posts about being in love.

I think that the November 14th, 2013 post about receiving your favorite flowers from the person you love is about Taylor Swift, but who's to say!

Then, on Friday, December 13th, 2013 (Taylor's 21st birthday, which I think she references in an interview sometime when she's talking about why she loves the number 13) Karlie posts two sugarplum fairy-related photos, capturing the scene in The Nutcracker where snow falls from the sky as delicate performers dressed in white dance along the stage. This is super Taylor-coded, giving YAIL, dancing in the damn snowglobe again.

On December 14th, Karlie posts a solo shot on instagram and tags Josh with photo credit (this is hilarious that we let them just tell us whoever took their picture with absolutely no questioning whether they might be lying???). For some reason, I get the feeling that Taylor took this photo for Karlie the morning after her birthday when they were still together from celebrating the night before.

2014 - You're My Best Friend

Taylor buys her massive Tribeca, NY Penthouse apartment in April 2014. The home was actually TWO penthouse apartments next door to each other, and then she bought a third townhouse unit next door in 2017, and in 2018 she bought an additional 3-bedroom unit in the same building. Go off NYC Real Estate Queen! Taylor moved into her iconic Cornelia Street apartment during a round of renovations at her Tribeca home in 2016.

1989 - October 27, 2014

"The inspiration that I found in that [New York] city is kind of hard to describe and hard to compare to any other force of inspiration I've ever experienced in my life." - Taylor Swift, discussing the importance of NYC in an interview with ABC News given on 10/20/2014 ahead of a 1989 promo single release for Welcome to New York (1989). That quote actually reminds me of a lyric from 1989: you understand now why they lost their minds & fought the wars, and why I've spent my whole life trying to put it into words (You Are in Love, 1989).

2015 - Hiding in Plain Sight

1989 era so many public appearances blah blah blah they were girlfriends in public kissgate gay whatever, everyone agrees that Karlie & Taylor were dating in 2015 during 1989 World Tour etc

2016 - Beards or Bust

Politics and Jared Kushner

The unfortunate reality of 2016 was that Donald Trump really did get elected president, and then he really did take office and become the President of the United States from January 2017 - January 2021. (Sadly, none of it was a nightmare or even a collective hallucination, all of this actually happened in the good old U.S. of A., yeehaw!!) The sociopolitical climate in the US is charged, fraught, uncertain, and divided. Even worse for Taylor & Karlie is their closeness to Jared Kushner, Josh's older brother who is married to Ivanka Trump. Jared served as a senior advisor to Donnie Boy for his entire term, and he did such a good job being Don's accomplice in negligent, ethnocentric, homophobic, misogynistic leadership from the White House that he was made the Director of the Office of American Innovation (this entire office was created by Trump in March 2017 and dissolved by Biden in January 2021).

I think (and this is JUST speculating, I have no real evidence compiled yet to back this up, but I'll look for it eventually) Jared Kushner & Ivanka Trump are also in a queer-bearding relationship contract. I'm not going too far into it now, but there's stuff out there for both Jared and Ivanka, like former Trump staffer Noel Casler's allegations that Jared is gay and in an "arranged marriage" with Ivanka, who doesn't care about his sexuality due to her own sexual opportunism and likely queer identity.

If Jared and Ivanka really are queer and in a non-monogamous, mutually beneficial public relationship that allows them to co-parent their three children, then their involvement in the Trump administration makes things pretty damn unsafe if they ever were found out. So, I think that when Trump was elected, the entire Kushner family had to be super locked down to keep both Jared & Ivanka AND Josh & Karlie (and Mikey and Taylor) safe from any unwanted allegations.

Since the Kushner and Hess families hold international influence, wealth, and power, if all these billionaire men were suddenly outed as gay there could be serious economic and political consequences across the globe.

Not so coincidentally, Karlie and Taylor's last public event together was Lorde's birthday on Monday, November 7th, 2016. The 2016 Presidential Election took place on Tuesday, November 8th, 2016, which sealed the fate of the Kushner name to be attached to Donald Trump's Presidency. I believe that if Trump had not won (which no one expected him to do) Karlie & Taylor would not have started this Love Blackout.

Joe really was a great choice for Taylor's life: he had features similar to Karlie's (light eyes, tall, blonde hair), he didn't have much going on with his own reputation, he had a sparkling clean dating history - because Taylor was his first ever girlfriend, he was a fellow artist and was already media trained, and he was gay, too!

Reputation was released on November 10, 2017.I consider Reputation to be Taylor & Karlie's "I'm so in love that I might stop breathing" album. This is the honeymoon, this is the up all night, can't stop, won't stop, I need you more than air kind of love.

This album is all about the pining and desperately waiting, hiding their anticipation, hands shaking from holding back from touching each other where anyone might see them. Instead of hosting her usual big 4th of July Party at the Holiday House in RI, Toe goes on vacation to Turks & Caicos to celebrate the holiday. They call Backgrid to take a few pictures of them "frolicking" at the beach together. I'm so convinced, they're in LOVE!! Can't get enough of each other!! They totally hold hands all the time, this feels so natural and not weird at all!

“Fubumeen!” Teddy yelled with a giggle running around the gym in your house. The gym in your home acted as Trent’s sanctuary, a place where he could unwind and keep in peak condition. Today, he’d brought Teddy down with him. She liked to just spend time with him, letting her bounce around on the yoga mats while he worked out. Music blasted from the speakers—his usual playlist of high-energy tracks, including some rap songs that he knew he’d have to be careful with around his little girl but Marcel and Curtis were over today so he let them play on. As Trent finished a set of weights, he heard Teddy mimicking the lyrics to a Gunna song that had been on loop lately in and out of the gym, her voice innocent but unmistakably repeating a bar with a curse word. He froze, torn between stifling a laugh and knowing he had to nip this in the bud. 

“Nah, Ted. Can’t say that. We’re just vibing alright?” Trent laughed and shook his head. He wasn’t really sure how to address it. His mind was split. He knew he had to tell her no but it was silly, it was only a song. Before he could say anything more, Marcel and Curtis erupted in laughter and started encouraging her.

“Young Gunna Wunna back, callin' me splurge.”  Curtis rapped back to her with a bit of a bob of his head crouching into a squat in front of her. He waved his hand for her to say it again. 

“Fubumeen!” Teddy giggled once more, loving the attention and the smile on all the boys faces. 

“Young Gunna Wunna, they workin' my nerves.” Marcel continued on with more lyrics taking a seat on a bench. He was more than entertained with this, Teddy was his little bestie and these were peak moments. It was hilariously cute but he was a fun uncle, not her parent. 

“Fubumeen!” Teddy yelped a bit louder. She was delighted by the attention and continued to repeat the phrase, her eyes shining with amusement. Trent, unable to hide his own grin, decided to let it slide for the moment, figuring it would pass when the song changed. That evidently wasn’t the case when they all returned upstairs.  You knew the three boys would be hungry and likely Teddy too so you were in the kitchen getting some food ready. Teddy was eager to see you, still riding the high of the gym’s antics, she couldn’t wait to share with you all the fun she had just had.  

“Ted, big Gunna fan now?” Marcel laughed walking into the kitchen as expected, holding her, able to hear her mutter the ‘fuck you mean’ phrase as if she was practicing. You turned to see her cute as ever chubby cheeks full and indented with dimples. Trent laughed but internally was hoping it stayed downstairs. 

“Fubumeen, mama.” Teddy proudly repeated once more with some rhythm.  Your eyebrow raised, not totally sure you heard her correct. Trent winced as he entered the kitchen behind them hearing it already. “Mama like dada and Celly’s music.” She giggled, thinking she was still being funny. 

“Yeah, baby?” You shot Trent a pointed look. You let it go once or twice but when you saw the greed grow on her face from the attention. You knew it needed to stop. Much like her dad, Teddy loved being gassed up. This was probably one of the few things you weren’t going to indulge her in for confidence. You had to try to suppress a smile. It was cute but definitely not okay. “T?” You questioned him a little curious how you ended up with your daughter saying this. 

“Baby, it’s just a song, and, well it’s a little funny, no?” Trent raised his hands in defense, still trying to suppress his own smile but remembering rapidly that this probably wouldn’t sit well with you. You hated that you had to play bad cop but you didn’t want your baby girl saying this. 

“Okay a little but it’s also not though. This isn’t funny, seriously.” You quipped biting your lip trying not to laugh seeing Marcel continue on with Teddy. You crossed your arms attempting to stand your ground, though there was a hint of amusement in your eyes.

“Mama! Fubumeen! Fubumeen! Fubumeen!” Teddy continuously yelled having the time of her life reciting the Gunna lyric. At this point Trent was sure you weren’t going to be happy. 

“Teddy, no, baby. Stop please.” You reprimanded her and Trent’s stifled quiet laugh stopped. “T.. that’s enough.” You shot him a glare. Teddy of course listened to you but you know she’d immediately listen to Trent, no explanation needed plus he was the one that started this.  

“Hey Ted, mmnnmm. No more.” Trent commanded Teddy, shaking his head and she stopped instantaneously. A part of you was so frustrated by his influence on her. You just huffed with a roll of your eyes. Marcel and Curtis were now on their phones starting up a completely separate conversation between the two of them over at the kitchen table. Despite being friends, the fear of ‘parents’ being mad had them wanting to get out of there quickly.

“Mama funny though. They laughing. Fubumeen?” She questioned if the phrase was funny to you too. The boys couldn’t help their laughter from starting up again hearing her little voice say it again with such inquiry, oblivious to the tension the lyric had caused. The other boys were one thing but Trent started to laugh again was the final straw for you. 

“Yeah? Just keep going then... You want her to say the next couple lines?” You snapped at Trent sarcastically. For context the following words were variations of ‘fucking this bitch like a perv, smack from the back, grab her perm,’ and so on…

“Baby… I’m sorry it’ll be fine.” He cooed to you with some fear. He knelt down to Teddy’s level now gently taking her hands, knowing he had to fix this. “I know it was funny, baby but that’s a big kid word. We don’t say that, okay? It’s only for grown-ups, and even then, it’s not very nice.”  Trent tried to explain to her as her eyes began to poole, realizing that what she had been giggling about wasn’t nice. You turned unamused with Trent trying to rectify a situation he created. 

“But was dada music.” Teddy pouted as her lash line filled with tears. “Mama?” Teddy's eyes darted around the kitchen looking for you in a panic. She broke away from Trent in tears, worried, chasing after you. 

“What Teddy girl…” You replied fairly short but still flashing your eyes down to her. 

“I’m sorry, mama.” She began balling. Crying floods of tears.  “Mad at mes foreber?” Teddy hiccuped vision blurred from all her tears. Guilt crashing over her. 

“No, my baby. C’mere. We just don’t say those things, okay?” You cooed softening as you kneeled down to her, wrapping her in a tight embrace. “Sometimes grown-ups make mistakes too, sweetheart. But it’s important to listen to Mummy and Daddy when we say something isn’t okay to say.” You gently tried to explain. You kissed her head consoling her till she calmed down. 

“Can I still go gyms with dada?” She sheepishly asked you. You smiled. It was sweet, all she wanted was to just be with her daddy.  You repeated her question louder for Trent to hear who was leaning in the doorway looking on. 

“Course, baby bear. We’ll listen to something else next time though, yeah?” Trent gently smiled feeling both guilty and relieved. You nodded with a hum agreeing with him that there should be some sort of censoring go forward. 

“Hold you to that, daddy.” You winked at Trent. You picked Teddy up with you as you stood and held her to you after she refused to let go now. She’d be glued to you for the next few days trying to regain your love back. The thing she didn’t realize was that she’d never lost it, not even for a second. Trent laughed at your wink. He knew he’d have to be more careful about what he played around Teddy, but he also couldn’t help but appreciate how she’d brought some unexpected humor into their day. 

“So mummy forgave our Teddy bear... What about daddy?” Trent asked you with some cheek and a pout running his one hand over Teddy’s hair and pulling you by your waist into him with his other. Teddy looked up to you with the same pleading eyes as Trent's awaiting your answer.

Know what is a "mondegreen?'

MONDEGREENS

If you’ve been listening to rock music, you know it’s often hard to make out the lyrics. They sing it their way and we hear it our way.

Jimi Hendrix famously sang the phrase “While I kiss the sky” which was heard by thousands as “While I kissed this guy.”

CCR’s popular song originally said, “There’s a bad moon on the rise.” Many heard it as “There’s a bathroom on the right.”

Deep Purple’s still-popular chorus (known for its timeless guitar riff) “Smoke on the water/Fire in the sky” was misheard as “Smoke on the water/Fire engine guy.”

Nirvana’s anthem “Smells like Teen Spirit” had the lines, “Here we are now/Entertain us.” They were misheard as, “Here we are now/In containers.”

When Elvis Presley sang, “Everybody in the whole cell block”, many heard it as” Everybody in a wholesale frock”

There’s actually a word for misheard lyrics like these.

Mondegreen.

Some mondegreens became so famous that even artistes like Hendrix and CCR sang the misheard versions in their live concerts in a spirit of fun and tease.

It’s not just in pop songs that mondegreens occur. The US national anthem begins with the lofty words, “Oh say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light.’ Some heard them as “José, can you see…”

Occasionally, mondegreens had an interesting side-effect. Joe Cocker sang of a ‘lovely planet’ which was misheard as ‘lonely planet.’ The latter became the name of a well-known travel guide series of books.

No one knows why we hear the wrong thing although there are theories. It’s akin to the game of Chinese Whispers where the original line gets progressively distorted into some hilarious garbage by the time it reaches the last guy.

Mondegreens are not restricted to English alone. South Indians, with limited knowledge of Hindi, were taught patriotic songs in Hindi by zealous teachers. A popular one had the repeating phrase, “Bara tamata.” School students sang it with great gusto. Years later, some of them realized the actual words were “Bharat Mata.”

A popular line from Qurbani song, “Aap jaisa koi meri/zindagee mein aaye/ toh baat bun jaaye” was understood as “Aap jaisa koi…toh baap bun jaaye.” The defective version made sense to many who saw Zeenat Aman gyrating on those lyrics while gaping at Feroz Khan.

Many who weren’t familiar with the hill station between Bombay and Pune heard the Gulaami song as “Haathi ka andaa la” until they realized it was “Aati kya Khandala”.

I have a friend, her name is Geeta. Her family called her Gitu. Throughout her childhood and youth, she thought Rajesh Khanna was singing for her, when he said, ”Mere sapnon ki raani kab aaye Gitu”.

'Mondegreen' sounds French but isn't. In 1954, a writer at Harper’s Magazine remembered how as a little girl she misheard an old English ballad. The actual words, saluting a dead war hero, were:

allison and seth are engaged in a months long “who can sneak up and punch the other the hardest” competition. allison is currently winning. the bruise on seth’s back is so alarming he has to get it checked.

nicky regularly sits on aaron’s head to “cure his homophobia”.

neil and kevin competitive juggling (because that one post about that on here has me in a fucking crack chokehold, it such a fucking funny concept)

renee painting the scenes before her in a renaissance style. they are these glorious, stunning works of art that just depict the stupid twats around her. she’s so proud of them.

dan on matt’s shoulders to change a lightbulb even though matt could 100% change it himself. she uses his ears to ‘steer’ him in different directions.

jean and jeremy live in another block but jean gets drunk at a frat party and climbs through neil’s window mistakenly. andrew comes running in hearing a loud bang and finds neil and jean on the floor - jean because he’s drunk and neil because he was sleep deprived and tangled in his duvet when he tried to get up. that’s how jean and neil become friends.

neil scales the building to meet andrew on the roof, regularly. andrew is so outwardly exasperated but he’s weirdly into it?

neil exclusively speaks german in a terrible accent one night that actually makes nicky cry. nicky is so pained he rings erik to complain and erik pretends neil is doing a great job. nicky thinks he’s lost his mind.

jean is just constantly high and gets very philosophical. but, like, badly philosophical. he’s either asking if ants piss in a deep, thoughtful tone or quoting obscure lady gaga lyrics. jeremy, equally as high, thinks jean must be a god.

neil inhales the helium from allison’s peppa pig birthday balloon and actually cracks a rib from laughing at his own voice.

dan walks in to see kevin in stilettos with his head rubbing against the ceiling and just slowly reverses.

renee steals the mobility scooter of a homophobic old man and exclusively uses it to get around campus. she calls it the pussy wagon to stop her male gay friends from using it. surprisingly this works.

allison gives a drunken one person rendition of the wizard of oz. everyone watches and finds it hilarious but renee cannot breath by the end of it. allison has never seen the wizard of oz.

they all get high and andrew exclusively talks to them in the lyrics of all star by smash mouth.

neil coaxes an actual fox into aaron’s bed and aaron screams so loud the police get called because it sounds like someone’s being attacked. for once, no one is being attacked.

kevin is a closeted amateur ventriloquist. as in, he practises in the closet.

renee fixes all of their (in this universe, minimal) trauma by holding a weekly story time where she reads them all picture books.

okay hi now that i am rested i need to talk about my edtm experience

main thing to know is that i wore my ash cosplay & brought my s-mart bag AND my handmade necronomicon that im super proud of. and also i know all the songs very well so i was mouthing along to pretty much every song & some of the dialogue. just in general very excited to be there

at the merch table i showed them the book and was like "yeah i think itd be cool to have the cast sign it ^_^" and one of the people running the table brought it back stage and they all signed it!!!! woohoo!!!!!!!!!!

we sat in the very front row and at the beginning of the show the director talked to everybody and said "you guys in the first few rows are gonna get sprayed with a lot of blood. Especially you" and he pointed right at me😭

the show itself was fucking incredible it was so so funny and there were some changes from the other versions ive seen (some updates to the lyrics but also. When they brought out a fucking skeleton in a wig for annies dad i lost it)

while ash was fighting all the deadites there were two people on the floor in front of the stage with these things⬇️

which were full of blood and they would spray either side of the audience depending on what was happening and the person on our side just kept looking directly at me and then spraying me in the face😭like i swear at least a third of the blood they sprayed was just on me it was fucking awesome

after the show one of the members of the band got the cast together so they could take pictures with me!!!! oh my fucking god!!!! they were all so nice and when we were talking before the pictures the actor who played ash walked up to me with the chainsaw prop from the show and was like "youll probably be needing this" and i got to wear it in the picture!!! what!!!!! and the picture was on stage in front of the big ass s-mart sign!!!!!!! oh my god they were all so nice it was so great. i told the actor who played scott that i loved his death scene and it was hilarious and he said "which one"😭and apparently they all saw me mouthing along the lyrics and were happy that i was so excited😁😁yayyyyy

overall. holy shit i cant believe all that happened. im so happy right now that couldnt possibly have gone any better. this feels like im the protagonist of one of those "i got sold to one direction" fanfics. also i got this shirt & i had it in my lap so it got covered in blood

Barb - as an individualist - doesn't give a damn about other trolls' opinions about anything she does. From her music to the whole life style. Other trolls except ONE. Cause when Viva blurbs out the smallest "maybe you could change-" Barb turns the whole Trollstopia around just to make this something PERFECT to her girlfriend.

Viva often calls Barb "Barbie", which her doll LOVES to hear. She immediently turns red from blushing and gets the stupidest smile you could ever think of.

Viva braids both her and Barb's hair to sleep! It's a part of their routine. No matter the mood, they are NOT going to bed without hilariously looking braids. And sometimes, when Barb is in a hurry she forgets to take them off which results in her having to explain the unusual hairstyle to other creatures...

The pop troll helps her messy girlfriend with her makeup everytime before a show! Barb would never admit she needs the help. However then when Viva glams her up she's always just as shocked of her love's abilities!

Barb loves to write about her feelings towards Viva, maybe not typical poetry, but her songs' lyrics. Whatever she's too embarrased to say straight to her face, she will sing out, at the top of her dark lungs!

I feel like Barb is Viva's first girlfriend, first love and everything, while the rock one has a list of shitty exes... BUT Viva is the only one she truly loved, and is happy with. Her girlfriend states to not know a lot about relationships, but then proceeds to be the sweetest partner Queen Barb could ever dream of.

Viva talks about her Barbie ALL THE TIME. Like she just brings her up at the most random moments, to the point where some trolls find it very annoying. Some, but deffinetly not Poppy! The sisters could spend HOURS bragging proudly about each others' partners!

Viva has an old emotional support plushie that she always holds when going to sleep. And ever since she started to date Barb, the pop troll gave her plushie some bold and dark eyeliner, so it could resemble her crush. (which made her sleep even more peaceful, and her dreams more, well, enjoyable)

Basically the reader is a musician/singer who writes their own songs; usually the songs are about anything and everything, but not often about romance of any sort. Then, one day, the reader starts singing more and more love songs. The song is actually about them, but the reader keeps the lyrics juusst vague enough for plausible deniability. How would the boys react to discovering this?

MORDECAI

He likes to believe he is nobody's fool. (And he is...Most of the time.) Being subtle doesn't work with him, either be upfront or you're wasting his time.

Y/N, however, seems to be able to play him like a fiddle. The creative musician always caught his eye when he was out running errands (either literal ones or ones that ended in death). It got to a point that he would sometimes go out of his way to pass by them or even stop by to listen to them, just for a moment. Something about their music, be it light-hearted, eerie, haunting or just plain sad; appealed to him. It helps that they were good at what they do.

Over time, they started to recognize him. This worried him at first, until it was shown that all they would do is give him an acknowledging nod and proceed to ignore him. Then they started trying to catch him after a number, going so far as to end a sidewalk performance just to try and catch him before he vanished into the crowd. Their music, likewise, changed; with a "feline made of shadow" being the main focus of a few concept songs.

This built up into "a cat with emeralds for eyes". Never in the same song, mind you. Say what you will about Y/N but they know that Mordecai is a bright son of a bitch and he'd catch that easily. How many black cats with green eyes are their in Saint Louis, they may not know; and gotta play it safe so they don't out themself.

The spaced-out alternating songs about a black cat and a green-eyed cat become their daily song routine, Mordecai notices. Barely a week goes by before they're mentioned. It's nice that Y/N has found a love beyond music, he supposes.

To this day, he kicks himself for not catching on early. However Asa thinks it's both heartwarming and hilarious that he somehow pulled a cat by being the most oblivious and avoidant feline possible.

ROCKY

Y/N and Rocky sometimes would perform together during his (admittedly rare) time off from the Lackadaisy gig. They wrote the music and sang, he'd play along on his violin if he came by, the performance was enhanced.

Y/N was with someone at the time, but it was more like a fling than anything truly serious. They and their S/O were mostly in it for the thrill of living with someone more than anything else. When the S/O broke it off, there were no complaints. They were happy to be a free runner for a little while.

They moved closer to the Lackadaisy when crowds were really picking up there. This also brought them closer to Rocky, who always seemed to be hanging around there for one reason or another. The duo started playing together as a result and Y/N got closer to Rocky and those damn blue eyes that they were so infatuated with.

So naturally, they wrote a song about them. But they went out of their way to never name-drop the owner of those nor even their fur colour or texture. They dare not even call him a "silver" cat in the song lest it tip him off as to who they're singing about.

Turns out, Rocky is completely oblivious regardless. They slip up at one point with a line about fine grey fur and he just punctuates it with a violin stroke, a wink and a grin.

Hold on. They are being subtle about their affection for him...Right?

Turns out Rocky is a lot brighter than he ever lets on. Not a lot of cats have blue eyes and grey fur, after all. He thinks it's funny, but Y/N burns alive with embarrassment and picks apart their wording to be even more vague.

It becomes a game for them. Y/N edits their songs to be vague, Rocky tries to catch them admitting how they feel about him. When he starts pausing in his playing to listen, Y/N feels like they're winning.

They both win, in the end...But Rocky decides to court them by being as vague as they were with him. Ivy calls them the most obnoxious secretive lovers she's ever seen, and they're both fine with that.

Being vague is a game to them. If you don't know how to play, then you're not part of the game.

- he’s so so fucking funny, he doesn’t even try but everything he says is fucking hilarious

- even tho it’s kinda a big contrast to the others i do appreciate that Jure just decided to be very private

- he’s so so real and honest, i think he would rather be disliked than be what he’s not and even tho i sometimes don’t get some of his thoughts i do appreciate his honesty

- i love the progress he’s made from the “ew make up” to be Damon’s muse, that’s a personal growth i absolutely love to see

- i think he’s very intelligent and i do find it very attractive

- this is just personal experience but in berlin when i met him he kinda looked like he would rather be in the bus but he still remained so polite and sweet and even tho it was awkward as fuck I appreciated the effort he made towards fans even tho he’s apparently very introverted

- i love his little bitchy sassy personality so much, everyone always sees him like such a nice boy but he’s the most likely to stand up for himself and i love it

- he is such a sweet boy tho and I think he does have this beautiful talent of making people feel loved

- I’ve never seen anyone to ever care so much about fans and spent so much of their day to interact with them, he seems so so grateful and down to earth and it’s very validating
