sunday morning, got me looking crazy

a new fic by: starlightbuckk (lovesicktaxi on ao3)

Buck spirals on a Sunday morning over his boyfriend, his best friend, a Tiktok, and what it means to show up for others.

And his laundry is still not dry.

Snippet:

Buck, for the record, would like to state that he is fine. More than fine actually, his best friend is just dramatic. He reminds everyone of this as they pull into the station and start to clean up from their previous job.

“Yeah Buck, maybe next time you should watch where you’re going,” Hen jokes, exchanging a look with Chim.

He scoffs, despite the slight pain in his knee…

The 118 had responded to a typical first aid call. A family on summer break had been enjoying some time by the pool, and it went south quickly when their son decided to ignore the cardinal rule of swimming—no running near the pool, he hadn’t dried himself off and ran into the house soaked from the pool. He ended up slipping, causing his entire family to follow suit—running about the property soaking wet, leaving trails of water in their wake.

Luckily, the boy was okay, Eddie and Hen checked him out and once they had confirmed he didn’t have a concussion, Bobby instructed Buck to grab some towels and start wiping up the water before anyone else got hurt.

Funny how that works.

Armed with the towels, Buck started to lean down to begin drying the floor when his boot lost its grip and sent him tumbling right on to the floor, towels flying everywhere, one even landing in the kitchen sink. 

“Oof,” Buck hit the tile harder than anticipated, his knee breaking the fall. 

The team froze for a moment, confused about how Buck managed to fall, until Eddie (carefully) crossed the floor, “Buck!”

“Eds, I am fine.” He laid there until Eddie’s wide eyes met his from above.

It’s the Polaroid they’d been given at the restaurant. Eddie goes and pins it to the fridge under a magnet. “For Cash,” he says, winking, and pointedly sticking the magnet on the cool steel door with a loud pop.

“Bye, Buck.”

He’s out of the loft before Buck can even begin to register what the hell happened.

With wide eyes he keeps looking at the photo, now stuck on his fridge, and still finds it hard to believe that Eddie could actually be jealous of him but he has to accept that it’s now a thought that he must entertain.

What other explanation could possibly justify Eddie’s actions?

Eddie imagining Buck with his Silver Star pinned to his dress blues. And he knows Buck would love the opportunity to wear it, the way his eyes go all wide whenever he sees it. And there it is. A zip or a glint, something shiny and new. Buck thinks about it too, tells people about it, pins it to Eddie like it's nothing.

Eddie manages to snap out of it, "Oh, Rav, I'm sorry about that. I know Buck gets even more talkative when he's drinking." Eddie feels sweat on his brow.

Ravi rolls his eyes like 'yeah, I fucking know'

"Luckily I was able to pass him off, I felt kinda bad about it, but I think one more shot and story about you would have sent me over the edge." He laughs and shakes his head, his soft curls following suit. 

Eddie quirks his head, asks "Passed him off?"

And Ravi looks over at Eddie, a flicker of something nervous passing through his eyes, "Uh, yeah, I mean. Tommy was there watching some fight on the TV, so I, y'know. Passed him off."

Eddie feels himself take a sharp breath, tries not to react any more than that. Begs himself not ask any other questions. "Oh. Did they um. Reconnect?"

Ravi shrugs, gets up like he's brushing this off his shoulders, like he didn't just fire a bullet into Eddie's chest, "You'll have to ask Buck about that one, buddy."

With a pat on his shoulder, Eddie watches Ravi go, then stares down at his own hands, wringing them, trying to keep himself grounded.

Okay, i have this uncontrollable urge to read a buddie fanfic where Buck just verbally destroys Ramon and Helena Diaz for the shit they put Eddie through, for not helping him and instead just trying to take the ‘problems’ away (i.e. Eddie was struggling to parent Chris when Shannon left and trying to work at the same time ‘oh well why don’t you give your son to us’, and that kind of fuckery) and just being terrible parents.

I seriously need a confrontation. like, maybe Eddie gets hurt and because he’s unable to take care of Chris because he’s in a coma or something, Chris has to come back to LA and stay with Buck and the Diaz parents are pissed so they’re making little comments about how Eddie would let Buck, a man who has ‘no children’ and isn’t in a serious relationship and so on, take Chris. Obviously, Buck ignores this because he has had his parents be awful to him his whole life and he doesn’t really ever confront them and he just ignores it.

I want it all to blow up when Helena says something about Eddie, maybe not even anything particularly bad, just a criticism about his job making it hard for him to be a good father (not that i believe that but still just something like that) and Buck LOSES it. Because let’s face it, he would go to war for his Diaz boys, or anyone he loves for that matter.

I’m picturing it in the hospital room where Eddie is, Buck just starts yelling about how terrible they are for taking Chris away, how they never helped Eddie, how they blame him for so much that just isn’t his fault and on and on and on. It has to be the embodiment of ‘there is no room of people where i wouldn’t defend your name’.

Helena is dead silent and she walks away and then Eddie wakes up, but he kind of heard everything and yeah, i don’t even care how it ends but yeah, i need this like i need to breathe…
