Augh I am not knowledgeable enough on this and I do not have the energy to see more of it but I am still thinking of it <- the morality and ethics of fiction and things like that and also how much of the author's views are affecting it

Quick example here: light from DN, most people tend to assume he's misogynistic, because the author unintentionally wrote his views onto Light's character. Of course, it is in a way where it does seem to be fair to have that negative trait onto Light, but in his other works that sexism is toned a bit higher and clearer to see.

So, that asks the question of many other works of art. At what point is it part the story, the themes, the character, and at what point is it the creator of their work, intentionally or unintentionally having their views baked into it.

Of course, I feel, it is maybe inevitable some of one's thoughts on matters are worked into their craft. It is your art, it will have your touch on it, whether you see it or not.

This of course eventually goes into rougher territory, does this person actually think this [horrible action] is acceptable, or justifiable? Or should we give the benefit of the doubt that it's meant to be in the realm of fiction that was meant for pondering, evoke emotions and connections to these characters.

What is romanticising/glorifying, truly? Though I suspect it may come to a 'case by case' sort of thing.

What is simply one's fantasies, of which, may be illegal to do so in real life, but they are fully aware of such. They still wish to engage in pleasure, though within the realm of fiction rather than reality so they do not actually harm others.

transgenderism dilemma

in the vein of that last post, i'm not sure what to do about my straight cis friends who keep referring to me as she. they are very supportive and they try their best to understand and i appreciate them so so much!!! but when i have other friends (some also trans and some cis but queer) who do make the effort to call me he or they (which i retired a while ago lowkey) , it's just kind of glaring when some of my friends still call me "she."

i know i told them any pronouns are fine and it doesn't bother me, but it kind of does. i don't want to go by "he" full-time, mostly because i'm more than a little nervous of being accidentally outed to people i'm not ready to be out to (my parents or some of my professors). but they're my friends. but i also know that if i tell these friends to call me "he" or even "they" (which still annoys me but at least gets them to acknowledge i am trans), i run a serious risk of them Not Understanding in front of someone i don't wanna be out to.

should i be this worried? should i have to go back and forth mentally about whether it's worth it to get gendered correctly by certain people when i know those people might potentially and completely accidentally out me?

i don't know. is it worth it? is it? to be gendered correctly or not to be. to be content with "they (sometimes) got the spirit." hm.

I haven't fully translated Ellis' route yet (I'm slow, I know), so I could be off but ... rest under cut for spoiler reasons

Ellis actually had a twin brother who loved being outside and exploring the world while Ellis preferred staying at home. He just wanted to be with his twin brother all the time.

One day, his brother had an accident and was run over by a carriage and he lost the ability to walk. Ellis built a wheelchair for him but his brother was obviously devasted and became super unhappy. And Ellis tried in his usual Ellis fashion to make him happy but it failed which is also the reason he denies himself his own happiness and desires ...

Anyway, his brother lost his legs/was paralyzed and everything went downhill from there until Ellis killed his brother 'in his happiest moment'. So I guess this had such a big impression (in a negative way) on him, that he's really iffy about his legs being touched.

BOUNDARIES

I know this is uncommon for me to make a post like this, but I feel that it needs to be done. I'd like to establish a few boundaries. I will be briefly mentioning some sensitive topics.

First, my askbox. That is open to mostly everything. My AUs, your AUs, myself or even yourself, I do not care. I really enjoy interacting with everyone ^^ However, please keep in mind that I am a little sensitive, and I am a softie at heart. I do not take criticism very well. If it is about my stories, then either DM me, or keep it to yourself. If it is about my behavior and something I need to fix, then please do call me out. I want to change and improve for the better, but I am only human. I do have flaws and I have feelings.

That being said, I am fine with discussing any kind of topic in media. And yes, I mean any. I can stomach quite a bit and I don't mind having a fair, respectful conversation about darker topics in stories. However that does absolutely not mean you can send me stuff about your experiences with those subjects. I do not know you. I struggle with my own mental health and truama; I write what I write as a coping mechanism and I am not here to deal with your problems too. Talk to a friend, a trusted family member, or a therapist if you are struggling. Do not talk to somebody on the internet you only know via their fanworks.

Just in case: when it comes to sexual topics, that can be a little iffy for me. I'm not the biggest fan of sexual subjects or jokes. One or two here occasionally are fine, but keep in mind that on this blog, the DRV3 cast are minors. I will not tolerate the sexualization of kids. If it's an adult then go for it I guess but otherwise, let's try to keep sexual subjects to the absolute minimum.

As suggested by my friend, fanart/fics/inspiration. I write a lot of fanfiction so already the characters and base story I write with are not mine, but in regards to works based on my AUs/fics, I will say this. I do not mind if you draw something based off my fics, or if you write something on it yourself. I would just like to be tagged so I can see it, because I really enjoy seeing what everyone makes. So long as you tag it with the proper warnings, go wild. All I ask is that your works stay within reason and remain respectful to the darker subjects of my or your work. As far as inspiration goes, please, go right ahead! It makes me happy knowing you liked one of my ideas enough to do something with it yourself. Go wild and have fun!

Have you ever wanted to draw something but you fought due to your skill level at the time you decide not to do it

I used to all the time! Honestly it got to the point where I stopped making art entirely for 4 years straight because of it. I don’t know what exactly convinced to pick it back up, probably some combination of a million different versions of the holy shit two cakes post and the no one will ever draw art the way you do post. I think the best you can do is try. Your skill level is never going to improve if you don’t take risk and you might end up paralyzed for four years wondering why you can’t make a ‘perfect’ art piece.

One of my favorite works I have made was actually a rough sketch animatic I put off for months because I just wasn’t good enough in my eyes to make it. I’ll be honest I can’t yet draw humans to save my life but I’m doing my best to learn. It took three weeks of my brain screaming at me and playing the same song over and over before I caved and started drawing. I’m not going to lie I hated it immensely at first. I even stopped working on it for a month or two before forcing myself to continue working on it. But then I finished it and I just kept rewatching it over and over because I made it! I did that?!? Yeah sure it’s not perfect and the human characters are little more then modified stick figures. The beginning was a little iffy because I didn’t really understand how to make animatics. But god I still go back to it and watch it because I honestly never thought I could make something like that. I hope one day to come back to it and see how much I’ve improved to be honest.

I think maybe you should still try even if you don’t think you are ‘good enough’ to make it. How are you ever going to reach the vague notion of good enough if you don’t try at least? You can’t walk a mile without taking a step and all that yknow?

heyo, uh sorry for the super long message, and sorry this question is a little strange or somethin, you dont have to answer it, but youre like the only person i have seen on the internet comfortably talk about csa, and i wanted to just kinda say ive been debating including csa in one of my characters backstories but im nervous i will misrepresent it or something (i have experience with being sexually harrassed/coerced when i was a teenager but it wasnt drastic and i am not a victim of csa) and i guess i wanted advice. i don't want it to seem like its for cheap shock value, i do want to make it thematically relevant. the character, who i will call S for conveniance, was raised in isolation by their mother for their entire childhood and was abused and neglected, and S was raised to be "bait" for people to lure them in so their mother could eat them (uh. yeah cannibalism is here too. their backstory is already fucked up without the csa) i have a basic idea for how the csa starts, how it incorporates itself into the story and how S is affected by it, but i dont know, im nervous about including any of this because again, its a serious topic, and i want to portray it in a way that doesnt feel like its there just to make the reader disgusted. so if you have any pointers for me i'd appreciate that. again no big deal if you dont answer this

well it sounds like you've already made it thematically relevant with the whole "raised to be bait" thing so good job. I can absolutely see myself reading a story like that and thinking "this would be improved with csa but the author probably didnt wanna go there" cuz I can't imagine a situation in which a child is created for and frequently put in that kind of danger for the parents benefit that wouldn't somehow cross over into CSA or at least emotionally incestuous behavior.

it makes sense to be nervous when writing about it but without exact examples i can't really tell you if i think you're off base on anything. im not sure if any of the general pointers i COULD give would be very helpful on account of i'm not the end all be all of csa representation haha. my situation wasn't even that bad, i'm just inordinately fixated on it for some reason.

some people will tell you that under no circumstances should you write a graphic csa scene. this comes from an understandable place where in the past a lot of csa in media has been very uhhhh exploitative i guess? just for shock value, like you said here? which can be alienating and hurtful and rely on unrealistic tropes and spread misinformation and a lot of bad stuff. but i personally like when things get a bit graphic, its why i liked The Incest Diary so much. it really depends on the tone of the story and you're just gonna have to accept that you're not gonna please everyone.

as for less/non-graphic csa portrayals theres this article by this author Rene Denfeld which i really like and respect. i've read her books The Child Finder and The Butterfly Girl and i think they're both good examples of portraying explicitly that a child was raped, focusing on the childs inner world, and what its like to live with and cope with that trauma afterwards, all without anything very explicit.

as a side note, i don't think that "Trying to make the reader disgusted" is a bad reason to include it. i dont think you need a higher justification to write about csa other than "I Wanted To." that doesnt mean i always enjoy or agree with how ppl write about it but trying to evoke disgust isnt inherently bad because it is disgusting. I often evoke disgust with my art even when I don't mean to just because people are more sensitive to it than I am.

but being overly cautious about writing about csa, to the point that you don't even include it, means that most of the ppl writing about it will either be dickheads who don't care at all about being sensitive and victims of csa themselves and when those are the two main categories things get iffy and stressful and the survivors voices often get drowned out. im not gonna go into why cuz that'll take foreverrrrr. but my point is that I don't believe CSA is worse than like, death, or grief or murder or something. you can write about it if you wanna you dont need an excuse.

Hummm well it must’ve been around the time Saw II came out. I was definitely too young for it but I had started watching horror movies at like 9 years old (with parental supervision at first) and I’m guessing I was like 13, 14 then? But I immediately loved it and I remember being so excited whenever a new movie was announced - until the sequel fatigue started to set in - but then Saw VI came out and refueled my love <3 (and then I fell in deep after rewatching everything)

Funnily enough I hated Hoffman on my first watch but I‘m almost certain that it was him getting out of the RBT in Saw VI that made me fall in love with him so it’s definitely that one. Although him going ham on the police precinct in 7 did make me feel a certain way 👀 but that was the only good thing in that movie aside from the Nazi trap lol

…well I personally refuse to acknowledge Logan as canon so he probably fits the bill but tbh I don’t really care for Lawrence either 🤷 I’m generally not a fan of retroactively squeezing in apprentices without prior planning for it, like even the way they added Hoffman in is a bit iffy because imo a lot doesn’t make any sense plot wise … I could go on about that but it’s getting really off topic so I shall refrain haha

Aw man there’s a few but I think Joyce from 7 didn’t deserve it AT ALL. Like seriously, she was just the wife of Bobby, she didn’t know anything about his lies and then she gets one of the worst deaths imaginable too!! If anything they should’ve made it so Joyce just had to watch Bobby die instead. (On that note I have to say the burning itself looked realistic and good, Eli Roth should’ve taken that as reference before creating his own shitty oven scene for Thanksgiving smh)

JTTW Chapter 12 Thoughts

Chapter Twelve for the @journeythroughjourneytothewest Reading Group!

Right off the bat that demon guardian did not play around! He was sent there on a mission and he saw it through with a passion.

When Li Cuilian said “yellow as if it had jaundice” I was not expecting that. Excuse me, jaundice?! Now that got me laughing!

Also yes, with that personality Li Cuilian is putting on display here I can believe that she took her life out of spite rather easily. Technically I’d say good for her, if I wasn’t still iffy about both her and her husband just abandoning their children so willingly.

Moving on from the mess that is them finally, I got to say I have a great appreciation for how religions coexist like this, which has been reiterated in this chapter. They all but stated outright how sure you can believe in whichever you want to, but you don’t slander or belittle or what have you other religions.

Honestly everything that might be considered plot convenience like Xuanzang being in Chang’an exactly while Guanyin is looking for a scripture pilgrim is explained to a degree by literal fate existing, so it actually makes sense in this world. I find that just really interesting.

“Shaped like Eight Treasures are the thread-made frogs.” There are frogs on the cassock?! 10/10 perfection indeed! I know they probably don’t mean actual frogs, but let me dream.

Also the luminescent pearl sounds so nifty, an outfit with those probably looks really cool in the dark! Really if one were to take the description of the cassock literally the look of it would be so silly and over the top and I love it.

Sticking with the topic the expansiveness of the poem on the cassock in contrast to the shorter one for the staff comes across to me like ‘Take this epic item that is so awesome and sparkly shiny and will make you look the most fabulous while providing divine stat increases! Oh and I guess this staff that can help you with walking too.’

And Xuanzang being so delighted at the opportunity to learn pretty much disregarding what he was just doing, he is such a nerd and we love him for it! He’s so happy and full of hope. Sweet bean doesn’t know about the horrors yet.

Randomly to my mind came the image of any celestial really just acting as literally light at night. A funny image indeed. Which shows up in Fei Ren Zai! Specifically Guanyin using their halo as a night light!

Continuing with funny mental images, when Taizong “raise[s] up the monk with his royal hands” I could only imagine him holding Xuanzang up like Simba.

I’m saying it now I want a reunion scene with those disciples! I want them to be really sad when the sixth or seventh year goes by and grow more and more disheartened with every year, but be all the more happy when they get the reunion after all.

Yey, he finally got his iconic name of Tang Sanzang! Let’s gooo!

We’re finally off to the actual journey!

Though I have one more little trivia bit for this chapter. Specifically about the meaning of the date of departure from the German translation! The third day of the ninth month can be read with symbolic meaning.

The third day of a month relates to the Trigram Zhen and thus beginnings, though do take this with a grain of salt, because when I tried to check if that Trigram really carried such meaning I couldn’t find a clear answer. What I’m sure tracks though is that the number nine symbolises Yang.

Since I’m not entirely sure about this trivia bit I’ll directly mention that the German translation refers to Chen Zhibin author of Xiyou Zhenquan (西遊真詮) for the interpretation of the date.

I'm probably gonna get fried for this but whatever. I can see you are really conflicted with this skin issue. As a POC and an African I kind of agree with your example of you were writing a story set in a african country where geographically there are really mainly people of a darker shade or you want to authentically portray a specific people. I'd also be iffy if your story was set in an African village and half the cast were Caucasian not gonna lie. So I get that you are trying to write an authentic tale... but also write it in the vision that you had in your head. I don't want you to think that because you chose lighter skin tones that, that says ANYTHING bad about who you are, or why you chose that make you second guess yourself. This isn't the goddamn american DragonBall Z movie where they made Goku a white dude (I'm still not fucking over that bullshit) I feel like if the story took place in a Asian country.. you would expect the cast to be Asians.. and thats not the say there aren't different people from all walks of life living in different countries. But I'd be hard pressed to be reading a story from the Joseon Era and have the MC be a little black girl like myself.

E/lriels on social media platforms are making just about every platform impossible to enjoy. I use the block/hide filters liberally and still can’t seem to avoid them. It’s always the same recycled arguments that don’t even make sense and it’s frustrating when you’re just trying to enjoy a fandom. Apparently A) Lucien and Gwyn aren’t important enough characters to have a POV. B) They harp on about canon — yet they want Lucien and Vassa to have a book together when there’s even less to support them having a romance than Gwyn/Az (hmm, wonder why?). C) Gwyn is a lightsinger and lures people (yeah, guess luring someone to gift her a necklace is the most important thing for an evil character?). It’s exhausting. I like Elain. I like Gwyn. I like Lucien. A little iffy on Az sometimes, but he has potential! And I think Gwyn/Az and Elain/Lucien are the pairings that just make sense with everything we’ve been given about all the characters. I’m sure things could change, but it just seems like every possible topic or theory gets hijacked to somehow bring in ships by E/lriels in particular. I’ve been in so many different fandoms over the years & this seems to be the most hostile one at the moment if you don’t go along with the “loud” shippers. I really admire your patience and in-depth analyses when you get asks. At this point, I’m just going to browse yours and a few others’ profiles from time to time and call it a day on ACOTAR forums. No real question, I guess. Just keep doing what you do!

And I agree, I've seen arguments and snide remarks in fandoms before but I've never seen anything quite like this. Not to mention the appalling attempts that E/riels make at completely tearing apart two main characters of the series.

Like it or not, Lucien is more relevant to the series than Az has ever been.

Who has connections to multiple courts? Direct links to Spring, Autumn and Day? Who has been providing Az and Rhys with need to know information? Who has an in with the human lands which is important when you consider the hints of an upcoming battle with the human queens? Mated to an Archeron sister who was blessed by the Cauldron? Meaning their powers would be equal? Is being set up to become High Lord himself?

Az obtains information for Rhys but I can't say he's all that liked by anyone outside the NC.

Not to mention that Lucien is actually respectful towards Elain while Az is looking to hook up with her after admitting he's never thought of a future for them, how they might be together.

They just look foolish when they act like Azriel is some sort of prize right now while twisting Lucien's character into something unrecognizable.

And pretending that Gwyn hasn't been set up for her own story while acting like Vassa has......the ability to totally ignore pages upon pages of text is some sort of useless yet problematic super power.

I can't even imagine what it will feel when we get an Elucien / Gwynriel confirmation. I have to imagine it will have made the years of harassment and bullying from E/riels completely worth it.

I was reminded that the 1993 Topps Marvel trading cards had Unsolved Mysteries of the Marvel Universe and I just had to check if we've solved them in the intervening 30 years.

Starting off we’ve got the longest running mystery, but as with all of these the big question is “what were you hoping to find out?” We’ve seen Doom’s unscarred face in flashbacks and healed in the 1980s Secret Wars, but it was only in 2015’s reimagining of Secret Wars that we see what really lives under the mask. It’s nasty! A real “dead dove do not eat” moment.

This one I’m surprised was a mystery since it’s so well known now. When Cable first showed up he was a warrior from the future, but it wasn’t until 1994’s The Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix that it was revealed that he was the time traveling son of Scott Summers and Jean Grey. Well, kinda... you see he’s actually the son of Scott and Jean’s clone Madeline and… go ask Jay and Miles if you want the X-Men X-Plained.

This is the one that got me started on this mess. Darkhawk wasn’t a huge character so this sort of went unresolved but also who cared? Basically when Chris Powell turns into Darkhawk his whole body is replaced by a drone robot from these space hawk warriors. Turns out the whole thing that freaked him out was that underneath the helmet it revealed that he wasn’t even human in that form. And yet, as far as I know we’ve never got a clear look at what he saw.

Hoo boy was this a mystery in 1993? So for background in 1990 we got Danny Ketch as the new Ghost Rider. He was more chains and leather than Johnny Blaze, the Evel Knievel-esque original. The mystery in question is “where did he get his powers and are they from the same demon Zarathos as the original?" After spending time too many wiki pages, I can now say that Danny was revealed to be Johnny Blaze’s secret brother and not powered by Zarathos. Looks like Danny at some point swapped his bike for a buster sword and started calling himself Death Rider. lol

This one is easy! It’s Thanos! Thanos is the sixth member! It got revealed in The Warlock Chronicles during Infinity Crusade. This mystery didn’t make it out of 1993.

Oh hey it’s my least favorite Spider-Man topic! That his parents were killed by the fake communist Red Skull is pointless at best. That they were seemingly brought back only to be revealed as Spider-Slayer robots is somehow worse. That whole mess got resolved in 1994 as a plot from The Chameleon. It’s right before the Clone Saga. Ugh!

This one is a case of dragging it out so long that no answer would be good enough. In 2001’s “Origin” we finally found out that Logan’s real name is James Howlett and he was born in late-19th-century Canada. The Logan name comes from James’ maybereal father from an affair and definite first bone claw stabbing victim Thomas Logan. This is all fine but I 100% of the time confuse “James Howlett” with “Jamie Hewlett” the artist who draws The Gorillaz.

A major thread in 90s X-Men was that Bishop came from a future where an X-Man had betrayed the team and ruined the future. He was pretty suspicious of Gambit in particular and there were hints based on this guy named The Witness that seemed to be Gambit from the future. All that got dropped when Charles Xavier became Onslaught and turned on everyone. Bishop even kind of got to save the day in that story. I guess it all worked out.

It’s our final X-Men mystery and the answer lies in one of the worst received X-Men stories of ALL-TIME! So your first thought should be “he’s a mutant what do you mean origin?” Okay, so starting in 1981 there were hints that Mystique was Nightcrawler’s mom. That started because people say they look the same. That’s a pretty wild thing to say since she has blue skin and he has blue fur and also she’s a shapeshifter so the idea of her real form is iffy at best. Well, it turns out Claremont wanted Mystique to have shapeshifted into a fella and been the father not the mother. Biologically speaking. He didn’t get to write that story, so instead Chuck Austen wrote The Draco…

I can’t believe this is going to a 2nd paragraph but here goes. Mystique in disguise as the wife of a German baron named Christian Wagner, but got pregnant by a mysterious Herr Azazel. The kid comes out blue and her charade is exposed. Flash forward to present day and Nightcrawler is investigating Isla des Demonas and he finally meets dear old dad. Azazel reveals himself to be a literal satan from the Brimstone Dimension. This very nearly broke Nightcrawler’s whole character. Instead of a kind man who is hated because of his appearance, he is a literal son of a demon. Don’t get me started on the woman who adopted Kurt. She’s green and has horns.
