Sam and Dean’s individual relationships to John are so fascinating, and his abuse of them was so complex and different for each of them, and each thinks he loves the other more because they didn’t receive the personalized abuse he doled out to the other. Dean was the “good child”, obedient, the peacemaker, doing whatever his father asked of him, and so he didn’t receive the negative attention that Sam did, which Dean viewed as more care. Because his father was paying more attention to Sam because Sam put up a fight. Dean would receive praise, but he wouldn’t receive the love and affection that he truly craved. He felt ignored and uncared for.

Meanwhile, Sam received John’s negative attention, the brunt of his ire because he fought back and didn’t acquiesce the way Dean did. He and John screamed at one another, got into fights, and thus he received more attention than Dean did. But at his core, Sam wanted that love that he thought Dean was getting. It’s just that when he did his job, he still felt neglected. Because he realized that that praise wasn’t really love. But even though he realized this, he was still unable to distinguish that this was also what Dean was receiving, not some form of praise or higher love.

Add to that that fundamentally, Sam and Dean were just such different people with completely different early life experiences that formed them. Dean could remember life before hunting, Sam couldn’t. Dean feels Mary’s loss and the loss of normalcy, Sam doesn’t remember her and craves the thing he has never experienced. And to top it all off, there is John blaming Sam for Mary’s death and fearing his potential monstrosity which makes him incapable of viewing Sam the same way he does Dean, even if Sam did completely what he was told. Sam was there when Mary died. Dean was outside the room, ready to follow his orders.

TLDR John Winchester didn’t have a favorite son: he had a soldier and he had a scapegoat and he loved them both the same, but in completely different ways.

the thing about Gotham being cursed is that all it tells me is that a lot of dc writers just never grew up in a city that the government hates. Like Gotham isn't cursed, it's just Philadelphia and DC if they fused together and was moved to the other side of the deleware bay

in order to unlearn racism u have to be willing to accept that u are racist. it’s not a bad thing to want to change for the better. it’s not a bad thing to say hey, the way i’ve been acting is racist and i don’t want to be racist anymore. when people of color are telling u ways in which u have been racist, it’s actually not cool to brush it off and say, well i didn’t mean it that way.. u actually have to make an effort to stop doing those things if u want to be able to actually say ur anti-racist. u can’t just say ur not racist because u don’t wanna be seen as racist. that’s not how unlearning racism works.
