Dick often made jokes in the past that it was only time before you two become the plot of a really bad romcom, two friends who pretty much did everything together, it was almost as if fate itself was trying to tell you something. A cliche friends to lovers trope just waiting to happen.

Now he couldn’t help but recognise the irony now as he holds his head in his hands, curse him and his loud fucking mouth for it always found its way to bite him in the ass sooner or later.

Dick didn’t mind falling in love, but to fall in love with your best friend after teasing about it happening for such a long time felt like karma for his teasing behaviour. He’s stuck trying to think of anything that didn’t remind him of you but unfortunately for Dick everything reminded him of you no matter where he looked, even his apartment was covered in things that you’ve left behind with no intention of taking back.

This has proven to be the perfect example of how much you’ve been overtaking his mind, slowly but surely before becoming all he could think of in his waking hours and his sleeping hours. It was driving him mad with how obvious his feelings must’ve been to the people closest to him.

You were all he knew in these moments and he was forced to be remained of his ever growing emotions with how he always seemed to be touching you in any capacity he could, his arm was often thrown over your shoulders in public or he’s holding you from behind as you stayed over at his place. He thrived off of your warmth and presence that it made going home to his place even more dull without you by his side to parent Hayley together, you’d make a great dog parent for all he was aware.

The signs were there and Dick was made to realise that he was the one who had fallen first out of the two of you, even though he wished it was you, and now all he could think was how he’d much rather have you live with him since you loved to leave your stuff at his place for convenience when you did spend the night. Hell you even cuddled together like a couple with you burying your head under his chin while he caged you against his chest with his arms as he pressed a kiss to the top of your head.

Dick knew he’d have to make a move sooner or later before someone else swoops you up right in front of him.

Damian was having his own integral crisis once he realised that he wasn’t in fact ill and was infect feeling romantic feelings towards you.

He’s against it and heavily so that he would find himself putting distance between the two of you because of it as it wasn’t something he was ready to face.

It’s very much an ‘oh shit, oh god why?!’ Type of reaction and suddenly his walls are back up. Damian knows how dangerous it would be if you were either him, as if being friends with him already didn’t put a target on your back. Not only that but he was secretly scared of what these emotions could spell out for his future.

Would he be distracted in patrols and missions to come because his mind was fixated on you and your wellbeing?

Would he become sloppy in his fighting or would he become even more ruthless at the idea of something terrible happening to you under his watch?

Damian didn’t know and he wasn’t one to ask for help either so he would often retreat to his room and put his head in his hands and sigh. Emotions were more trouble than what they were worth and it often caused him frequent headaches in the process. Damian didn’t know what to do and so he could only hope that if he spend less time with you then the feelings would go away.

However owever this plan ultimately backfires on him as he finds himself missing your presence more then he’d ever admit at gunpoint, he’d even find himself drawing you how he saw you and he’s back to holding his head in his hands and groaning at how much of a bother these emotions were going to be.

He loves you but wasn’t willing to risk your safety by taking your friendship to the next level, but even if he ever did he’ll most likely have to teach you basic hand to hand combat to satiate his concern while he’s away from you. But until then he’d rather let the emotions die in his chest, no matter how much they burn him from the inside for he’s dealt with worse.

Jason would come to this realisation that he was in love with you when he found himself becoming more protective over you than normal. And I mean more than normal.

He’d be on patrol and the first person he looks out for is you, especially if your on an late shift at work, as he doesn’t trust Gotham in the slightest at night for that was when the city was at its upmost worst. He’s watching over you like a guardian angel, a rather violent guardian angel but only towards those who deserve such lethal and or permanent punishment from his gun.

He wants you to be safe on your journey home that sometimes after beating up some goons, he’s walking you home as red hood for extra protection before bidding you a goodnight. He doesn’t care how often he has to do it because he’ll gladly walk you home no matter what, your safety was Jason’s top priority and he knew he’d hate himself more then he already did should anything happen to you when he wasn’t nearby.

He knew he had fallen for you when he became softer and more affectionate towards you, whether that be holding you by the waist as he moved to grab a cup in the morning, kissing your temple as good morning greeting, holding your hand when he feels the need to distract himself by fiddling and intertwining your fingers together.

He even remember falling more for you when you reciprocated the touches with some of your own that lead to him falling into your arms, finding his much needed solace there as he realises just how much he wanted this to be a reality you both share together, a reality where you’d lie in bed tougher and wake the other up with kisses and sweet whispers of love and adoration you had for one another.

His apartment that felt cold and dead was more alight and filled with life when you came in through the door, decorating it with trinkets and other gifts that you bestowed upon him, but what made his apparent more alive and warm to Jason and that was you with your presence and Jason didn’t know how he’d manage to live his entire life without you being his rock and his reason for everything.

So needless to say that Jason felt as though that if he’d loose you he would be a man without a cause, a man without an anchor who could aways bring him back form the brink, he knew damn well that how he treated himself now would be nothing in comparison to how he would treat himself if you left his life.

Jason needed you like he needed air to breathe, how he was going to confess he wasn’t certain but he had a thing or two in mind.

I’m getting really curious on the whole seemingly complex situation that is Mitzi’s romantic relationships.

Cause like, we got Zib, we got Atlas, AND we got Wick!

As far as I’m understanding Zib and Mitzi was like a situationship?? Or maybe just an unofficial relationship from teens to early twenties?? Like they have history together!

But then Atlas comes in and Mitzi kinda leaves Zib for him? Like did she just lose feelings for Zib all together and now only sees him as a friend in the current timeline?

Then theres Wick! Who I’m unsure if Mitzi does or doesn’t have genuine feelings for!

Not that she’s doing it out of malicious intent! It’s clear she feels guilty when she had to use Wick. All things will go into deeper shit if she doesn’t have Wick around! So maybe she’s playing his heart to keep him around because she is extremely dependent on him money wise?? Or does she have actual feelings too??

Girlie has three (or more) men smitten by her! But does she feel the same way in return? I’m pretty confident she did at least have real genuine feelings for Zib in the past! But did she actually love Atlas or was it a marriage of convenience? Or Wick! Is it only a tactic to keep him around as long as possible or has she also had some feelings for him that she’s now partially showing cause her husbands been dead for a year!

Her love life looks so complex! I feel like she needs a drink with how many men seem to be into her at the same time!

It is indeed messy and complicated, but I can't think of many romantic relationships that don't have some chaos woven in. Even taking account of meaningful, non-romantic relationships in my own lifetime with friends or family, "It's complicated" is an apt descriptor. She and Zib had a past, yes. There were definitely feelings involved, but the structure of the relationship was uncommitted and wishy-washy. Then some things happened that caught Zib by surprise. For indicators as to how Mitzi felt about Atlas, well, take into consideration that she still speaks to his portrait. You can maybe find some clues about the nature of their relationship in things that Zib and Mordecai say in Volume 2 of the comic. As for Wick, I hope it's clear there's at least some mutual attraction there. Mitzi's got her priorities, though, and Wick is actively trying to sort out exactly what his feelings are and where he draws a line in the course of the comic. Really, details are meant to unfold gradually in the story to paint a fuller picture of the past. Things you surmise about it and conclusions you draw (even if they don't ultimately line up with canon) are likely to be far more interesting than whatever dry explanations I could provide here, though.

“I was at the bar, Buck.” Eddie’s voice is quieter now, dripping with uncertainty. “I walked in- and I saw the team. Then I saw you. At the pool table. Kissing someone.” Eddie inhales sharply and it feels like the air is being ripped directly from Buck. “And when I saw that I- I had to leave.”

The words play back in Buck’s mind in slow motion as he tries to piece them together. None of it makes any kind of rational sense. Eddie was there? He saw Buck and then had to–

“Did you have sex with her?” Eddie blurts out. 

That is not at all what Buck was expecting. Ever since Shannon died there’s been an unspoken rule between them. A silent pact to never inquire about or interfere with the other’s romantic life. And sure, Buck broke that with Ana, but only because Eddie was having panic attacks. What else was he supposed to do? This is completely different in every way. Because his best friend, man he’s hopelessly in love with, and star of every filthy fantasy, wants to know if anything more happened with a stranger at a bar.

The implication clicks, allowing something bright and hopeful to flicker to life in his chest. A wish Buck never dared let himself believe would be fulfilled. “Would it matter if I did?” 

Buck doesn’t miss the way Eddie’s nostrils flare slightly before he attempts to cover it with a mask of indifference. How he seems to be struggling not to look away again. 

“It’s not like it’s really my business anyway.” Eddie shrugs and begins picking at the label on his drink with his thumbnail. 

The flickering ember of hope draws from Eddie’s reaction, daring to glow the tiniest bit brighter. “I didn’t, you know. Do anything with her, I mean.”

Eddie pauses his fidgeting, just long enough for Buck to notice before starting again. The casual silence that had been there before is anything but now. It feels weightier, the ease replaced with tension and doubt, and Buck starts to wonder if he’s completely misinterpreted the situation.

“Did you want to?”

“No!” If this is going where Buck hopes it’s going he wants to be as clear as he can. He quickly adds, “Not with her.”  

Eddie jerks his head up, staring at Buck with equal parts curiosity and disbelief. It pins him in place, leaving him helpless to do anything but stare back. He doesn’t risk moving, his breathing rapid and shallow, too afraid of severing this potential new thread weaving its way into their well established connection. Another anchor point in their root system, twining them together.

“And if it had been someone else?” Eddie asks.

Not that Buck is the most effective communicator, but he kinda wishes Eddie would just say what he means already. However, he supposes, two can play at that game. “I guess it would depend on who’s asking.”

Eddie hums, shifting to set his bottle down on the counter. It lands with a semi-hollow clink and a gentle slosh as he maintains his hold, tapping one finger on the neck. As if he’s contemplating, trying to sort out a complicated equation. He briefly squeezes his eyelids shut tight, pinching his lips together, something warring within him. With a loud exhale through his nose, his body finally relaxes again and releases his grip, letting both hands rest at his sides. 

There’s something else, too, when Eddie faces forward again. A new aura of confidence rolling off of him in waves. It’s vaguely reminiscent of a different night in this kitchen when their roles were reversed and Eddie stood down, unyielding to whatever the fuck Buck thought he was doing. 

Not now though. 

Now he looks intently at Buck. He sees him. He sees him in a way that makes Buck feel stripped down and exposed. A raw vulnerability that intensifies as Eddie steps towards him, his boots echoing with each heel strike. Another and another until he’s standing in Buck’s space, effectively caging him in. 

Eddie takes the beer from his hand, placing it off to the side. It seems like a hallucination, some sort of wild fever dream. But then Eddie’s fingers are tucked under Buck’s chin, his thumb sweeping across Buck’s bottom lip and making him shiver. Christ it feels so fucking real. Please let it be.  

This close, Buck can make out flecks of green interspersed with warm golden browns. He can smell the oud and lavender cologne Sophia gave him two Christmases ago. Eddie swears up and down it’s not really his style, but Buck knows better. He only had to be tortured by it every time Eddie came home from a date. Maybe it can be his now. A scent from his person. A type of claim letting everyone know he belongs to Eddie. Even if it’s just this one time. 

“And what if I’m asking?” Eddie inquires, low and husky in a way Buck’s never heard from his best friend before.

“Are you?” Buck responds, barely above a whisper.

They have been engaged for years. They married out of convenience and their relationship isn´t fully romantic, but CatNap actually cares about her in a way and is kind of possesive of her.

How did you come up with the Midnight Mysteries AU?

Funny enough, the idea simply came to me one day in which I was listening to the Spy X Family openings, and since my previous hyperfixation was The Great Mouse Detective my mind suddenly thought "What if I made an AU inspired on both things?" That added to the fact that I always kinda imagined Bubba as a detective and knew I had to draw it sometime.

Does CatNap just manipulate or make deals with the Sugary Scoundrels to cause trouble?

Sort of! As those two grew up in the orphanage that he runs, it´s more or less their way to repay him the favor, even though they spend most of their days out on the streets roaming around. But they are also lowkey intimidated by Catnap... Though, Bunzo has it worse with Mistress LongLegs in comparison. PD: The girls, specially CatBee, really admire Loola! And the latter is quite fond of them too.

Will the Midnight Mysteries AU have a similar story to Poppy Playtime, or does it only have the characters in common with the original source?

It will most likely have a slightly different route as PPT´s story is not done yet, but there will be events of the AU based on it! For example, The Hour Of Joy took place as well, but the motives behind it will be different.

What year does the Midnight Mysteries AU take place in?

Historically wise, it would take place around 1930-50, I don´t have an exact year but I know it would hace to end in 5 given how Poppy Playtime takes place in 2005.

What was MM Catnap´s childhood like?

I still have to think better on it, but he was a wondering performer! Perhaps specialized in acribatics.

What sort of things did Huggy and his siblings do before working for the railroad? What were their parents like, were they even around?

Their parents died when they were still yound, so Huggy had to raise his siblings by himself. They were later taken into a circus, but things weren´t very nice in there... After leaving the circus he took part on several crimes, being the brute force of the villanous gang while his siblings were unaware of their brother´s felonies. But when he took part in The Hour Of Joy, Huggy decided to change his ways from then on and did his best to leave the past behind along with his family.

What are Angel´s pronouns in the AU?

He/They!

Is Angel close or affiliated to any of the characters from the AU (DogDay for example?)

Yeah! He is allies with Poppy, Kissy and DogDay. Angel shares a parent-son relationship with the latter as they practically raised the poor dog after he had gone through a negative moment in his life.

Is CraftyCorn in the MM AU, or does she have yet to be revealed?

He´s mainly looking for his dad! But I love that twist ngl...

Yes, she does know but perhaps she wouldn´t recognize him at first as she didn´t raise him and Billie wouldn´t even know how she looks like. Darwin tried not to tell him much about her and her deeds, or at least he wanted to wait and tell him until he was old enough.

How did Darwin go missing, did Billie witness it?

He got kidnapped, and Billie did witness it. He caught sight of the kidnapper but couldn´t catch up to them when he tried to go after his dad.

What happened to Angel?

Many things...

Does Angel have the ability to die and revive in the past before they died? The Angels from the other universes are able to do that too.

No... Or at least, they haven´t tried out yet, so who knows!

Indeed, Angel betrayed their comrades in a very critical moment and since then they all have been searching for him... CatNap mostly. Which is why they usually remain hidden, outcasted and only keeping contact with selective people.

What I don’t understand in shuggy is why oda added that brothers line. The in universe explanation of marines didn’t knew works, but we as readers? Why he decided to add that? I heard people talking that Japan is very specific about sworn brothers and shuggy are not but why even write that line? I don’t get this decision. Unless he wanted us to think they were like that or idk Did you ever talked about it from the author pov? Like everything author puts in his work he does on purpose. That line has to have a purpose. And what do you think it was? I’m not attacking, just finding good writer who likes shuggy so can answer that in smart way

well, first off i have to disagree with you: oda isn’t doing everything on purpose.

i mean that both in the sense that we know not everything about one piece has been planned all along, and in the sense that we know he’s added elements to his story and world unthinkingly. sometimes he forgets to draw things! sometimes he makes a joke and didn’t think through the implications! you should look through the SBS catalog sometime, it’s fun to see him come up with explanations for some of this stuff after the fact.

now, is the sworn brothers line one of those unthinkingly added elements? probably not. it feels like something written with intention to me.

what intention? as far as i can tell, just the textual one: to show how limited the marines’ understanding is.

the marines looking at buggy’s history with shanks and calling them sworn brothers shows how, even with all the facts in front of them—like viewing the complete impel down prison footage and deciding that luffy and buggy had the breakout planned from the start—the marines will consistently come to wildly incorrect conclusions about who buggy is, and why he does what he does.

(this has become a common theme with buggy & the marines in the years since marineford—just look at cross guild!)

i’m not even saying this as someone who views that relationship as romantic. shipper goggles off, i’m saying i simply do not believe buggy considers shanks a brother.

we’ve seen a sworn brothers’ bond before: the one between ace and luffy. we know how buggy thinks of shanks. the two relationships could not be more different. thus, by having the marines misidentify the buggy & shanks relationship as 兄弟分, as kyoudaibun, as sworn brothers, oda shows that the marines don’t understand buggy at all.

i really don’t think it’s any deeper than that.

i am certain that oda does not intend for a queer reading of shanks and buggy. i’ve said it before: oda is a remarkably queer-friendly shonen author as far as gender is concerned—though not so queer-friendly that one of the main characters of the series isn’t deeply transmisogynistic—but queer sexuality is just not present in the text.

now, that doesn’t do anything to stop me from having a queer reading of shanks and buggy. that doesn’t stop any of us from having all kinds of queer readings of one piece!

but it does mean that when you ask me, “i understand your point about the marines being wrong in-universe, but why did oda use the phrase sworn brothers?” a big part of me wants to say, “i don’t know, and i don’t care.”

i’m not a mind reader! i can’t tell you what oda was thinking! and frankly, it doesn’t matter to me what he was thinking! death of the author, you know? our interpretation as readers is equally, if not more, important than any theoretical authorial intent.

and even if oda does someday condescend to answer an SBS question about a five hundred chapter-old turn of phrase, and it turns out i’m totally wrong about everything… so what?

Regarding your post about censorship: I'm like 90% sure most of this is not censorship (they left the entirety of buddy funny as it was. I refuse to believe "partner" is where they draw the line). I've played tons of Japanese video games in official English; the usual standard for translation is, in practice, that it shouldn't be obvious it wasn't originally written in English. Imo, this is the actual difference between "the miles i fell in love with is so cool!" (Not grammatically incorrect but not how actual people speak) and the official. As for it having romantic connotation to begin with, lol you said you got that from looking it up but Google the same thing in English and you will still get only romantic advice because it just assumes you're asking when the appropriate time to say I love you in a relationship is.... It could've been a joke, or a gay allegation, an anime way of speaking, or even nothing. How would you know which? I absolutely do not mean this in a rude way and I'm really sorry if it comes off like that but. I don't think you can comment on the connotations of words or level of casualness without speaking the language yourself.

Same with minoharu; it's (unfortunately) not canon. If she actually said "I love you!!" Regardless of dictionary definitions, it will be read as a romantic confession by most players, and you often say the game likes ambiguity so I take it that's a no. "I like you!" Is rather an awkward thing to yell in english, though. So "you're the best" is what they substitute.

(Please don't blame the translators for stuff this insignificant tbh. Some things in early game may sound clunky, but they've really smoothed out over time in terms of word choice sounding natural (...event names notwithstanding). I've done translations between my first language and English for fun; if you linger on every last word and it's connotations, you will go /insane/ reallyyy quickly. Imo no two words in different languages have the exact same meaning, connotation, use case etc. Ever. Differences of this level are utterly inevitable when games have so much text.)

to be honest I don't think it's all censorship either, i just kinda went off on a tangent about things getting removed in translation and i did put in the post reasons why these translations actually are valid (aside from Toya woao because they did leave that one in the card name so it was a deliberate choice to remove it from the story, thereby also removing the reference in the card name). That Asahi post is old and I have done more research into it since, because my JP isn't good so I've gotta make up for it somehow, and literally every dictionary definition and anything I can find for that word frames it as romantic. For the extra mile I checked Japanese dictionaries for languages other than English. I found one thing saying it can be used for an idolisation, but even in that instance the way it's framed in the story is still done in a way that could be viewed as ship tease. In other words, it's probably romantic. Even if he's just talking about the character and not Tsukasa, it has a romantic reading and removing it was a deliberate choice. "The miles i fell in love with is so cool" might sound a bit rough, but it could have still been translated to keep the original context no problem. You could've just done something like "well of course it was cool. i fell in love with miles for a reason" or "it was so cool! as expected of the miles i love". the thing is with writing for a game like this is sometimes people need to say things that in real life you would probably just say in your head. the POV character for this event is Rui so we can't just take a look at the thoughts of the characters, which is why what they're feeling needs to be conveyed through text even if it sacrifices a bit of the realism. especially in a visual novel styled game like this because the characters are limited to a 2D model with limited movement and expression. if this was an anime you could probably get more leeway with what they say because you can convey the character's feelings through various other means (eg: the animated MVs that don't have any dialogue but could convey a story and emotion much better than looking at the in-game version of the scene with no dialogue). Don't worry I don't think you came off as rude and I know I shouldn't really talk about a language I don't speak but I hope the research can at least kind of make up for it.

Minoharu isn't canon I know but it's very obvious that what Minori feels for Haruka goes into romantic territory, whether you like the ship or not. And sure, if you put "I love you" most people would probably read it as romantic by default, but that hasn't stopped the translators before. "You're the best" honestly is a valid localisation that still conveys pretty much the same meaning I just find it odd that "I love you" is removed here, a flashback scene from a point in time where minori and haruka didn't know each other, but is translated with accuracy in multiple interactions between An and Kohane in present day. If Minori and Haruka don't know each other it's slightly less likely that people will interpret it as romantic and slightly more likely that people will interpret it as a simple idolisation but with An an Kohane actually knowing each other and having a close and affectionate relationship the go-to is probably gonna be romantic (which isn't wrong considering the events of BFST and Wishing for Your Happiness, but still sticks out that they left this in here but change it for another couple with heavy romantic subtext).

I'm not blaming this on the translators, they're just doing their job and obviously with localisation you've gotta lose stuff, it's just that some of these are very specific things to cut (eg: any indication of Asahi feeling romantically towards Tsukasa's character and ambiguously Tsukasa himself is completely absent in the official translation). I'm blaming this on the higher ups at sega who get the final say on what is and isn't included in the translation. You can't translate everything directly because languages don't all work exactly the same, especially english and japanese. obviously due to these differences, you're not going to be able to translate everything directly and localisation is necessary (regardless of language) to make it accessible and easy to read for an audience outside the country of origin. but there are gonna be questions raised when a scene is localised to keep the same meaning as the original text aside from one line that removes notable queer subtext. because if they can keep the rest of toya's speech in line with the original but they specifically remove the part about him wanting to stay side-by-side with akito forever and change it to wanting to perform side-by-side, despite the fact they left in the "now on and always" part in his card name, that was removed from the story intentionally. they kept what asahi says to tsukasa with the same meaning as well, but any indication of asahi feeling romantically towards the other is completely gone. the issue is that sega seems to be intentionally removing queer subtext from the game.

You didnt remember what happened when you woke up the next day in bed with you sketch book and a few pages spewed on the bed with yourself and a pencil

You felt a large hand, an unfamiliar large hand fall on your shoulder as you stay fake sleeping, a blanket being brought further up your body as your hair was swipped back for comfort and that was all.

You hadnt even been changed out your outfit of last night.

You sat up

"I did not wish to wake you." Týr spoke, Y/n's sketch book in his hand, setting it on the desk.

"Oh...thank you." Y/n spoke softly.

"You are tired still. I would be as well." Týr chuckled, "we had quiet the night."

Y/n was silent looking around, "You take your work very seriously."

Y/n nodded, oh, drilling another project she supposed, picking up one of the left over sketches some quick, other's well consumed on time.

I've seen it stated in a comment on reddit that Blitzo "deserved what happened to him at Ozzie’s. He forced himself on M&M’s date and then went out of his way to draw attention to himself KNOWING fizz was there. The entire event was a result of his own actions. Hell, Stolas treated it as an actual date and at least tried to make an effort to be sweet."

Dude, this is Tumblr, not TikTok. You don't have to censor yourself here. You don't have to make every word you write commercially viable. It's okay. Be free, little bird! Spew expletives left and right if you feel so moved!

I want everyone to feel free to speak their minds on this blog, and if that includes a few naughty words, so be it. Besides, I'm pretty sure no one's getting in trouble at work for reading a post that contained the word "crap".

Anyway, to the more pressing issue at hand: It's important to recognize at all times that these are fictional characters, not real people. They are puppets whose actions are dictated by writers. Yes, giving characters the illusion of agency when writing stories is a great way to engage your audience, but when analyzing stories, you have to focus on why the people who wrote them made the choices they did. Debating which character was in the wrong, or which character was more wrong, or which one should apologize, yadda yadda yadda, is a futile fucking exercise if you don't include the writers' intent in that conversation.

Let's look at Blitzo. He pretty objectively caused most of what went down at Ozzie's. He followed Moxxie and Millie, he invited Stolas, he drew attention to himself when he knew people who hated him were present. Now that last one seems pretty stupid, like the kind of mistake no one of sound mind in the real world would ever reasonably make. We could spend all day speculating what about his personality would lead him to do this, whether it's zero sense of self-preservation, a subconscious desire for self-sabotage, or simple inability to keep his damn mouth shut, but here's the thing: Other Helluva Boss characters have the same problem. To reiterate what I said here:

"Why did Octavia fully forgive her dad, no questions asked, even when he couldn't explain why he cheated on her mom? If Loona hates being around Blitzo so much, why didn't she just stay with the succubi on the beach? [...] Why did Moxxie make a huge romantic gesture in an environment where such gestures are frowned upon? [...] Why did Stolas bring an imp to a couples-only club despite knowing it'd ruin his reputation?"

The answer to all these questions is "because the plot demanded it." The writers wanted a certain outcome and wrote themselves into a corner before they could reach it organically. Instead of putting themselves into the characters' shoes or retracing their steps to make the endpoint feel like a logical conclusion, they just said "fuck it" and brute-forced the easiest solution, causing the result to make no goddamn sense.

Given the level this writing is on, it feels kinda pointless to argue with internet strangers over which character was in the right and which one wasn't. Subsequent episodes haven't addressed the events of "Ozzie's" (at least not in a way that means anything), leading me to believe the writers never cared enough about them to spark any sort of in-depth conversation. So why should we?

Honestly, this person just sounds like a Stolas simp. It's kind of a leap to assume they don't want real people of a certain race and class to bear responsibility for their actions. It's not that deep. None of this is that deep.

Here's a subject for you to tackle if you ever feel up to it: why do people find jealousy so attractive?

As someone who spends a lot of time in fandom space, do you have any thoughts on this? I'm thinking myself in regards to shipping in general, but asking here knowing this is a jikook space.

(If you've spoken on this already, forgive me and direct me there - I did check but I'm not on my A game today.)

Today is a brain fog day, so I've just been mindlessly flipping through YouTube shorts, and the amount of edits and clips with creators and commenters focusing on the perceived jealousy between the people they ship is baffling. Most of the time I just don't see it: person A's face was doing a weird thing when the camera caught it while B and C were dancing together - even media trained professionals aren't On every single second. Maybe he had gas?

I'm the last person who should be commenting on healthy mindstates in relationships, I'm full of issues, but the focus on and desire for jealousy is just...bizarre? Jealousy doesn't feel nice - not from either direction. Why would someone wish that on people they love and admire? 

It sounds like I'm being judgemental reading this over, and that wasn't my intention. This ask springs from genuine curiosity: what is the draw?

The want to be desired above anything and everything to the point of possessiveness. To be coveted and protected. "They must *really* love me if this is how they feel and they want me so much." And I blame media who romantizes the fuck out of the "jealousy trope" while in real life, it translates to something much more toxic and when it goes too far? It translates into something more like Joe from You. It often even ends up romanticizing abusive ideals and relationships. People cannot and do not own and control other people. Not their actions or their other relationships outside of your own.

Jealousy is a mark of Insecurity more often than not. Not every time, but it's often a sign of needing more communication in the relationship and talking about whatever triggered the Jealousy and what boundaries in the relationship work for everyone. It's not really a tell of desire, like a lot of people seem to think it is, but rather a tell of person a being insecure about something. And that's an issue to be resolved or abandoned, not an excuse to be controlling. Boundaries are to be respected and if two peoples boundaries don't line up, then the relationship should not continue. If one person's boundaries aren't fair or respectful of another and leak into the toxic controlling aspect instead, then that's a them problem. And it's not a sign of them being so in love with you that they can't control themselves.

If they talk bad about the other people in your life, or they want you spending less time with them, that's a red flag. Please reconsider the relationship. It's not cute and it's not romantic.

And in regards to shipping... well people look for their jealous in terms of I see it as a indication of attraction and love in the romance centered media I consume, so if I see it in my ship, it's proof of my ship being "real." And then they take it wayyyy too far. Which isn't healthy in my opinion. I don't mind it in media to a certain extent and it can be kinda fun sometimes, the Jealousy trope. But people need to be able to seperate reality from fiction.

Why '91 Drakepad is NOT toxic

so ill admit, there are times where i doubt how healthy the og drakepad dynamic is in terms of romantic relationship

BUT in my heart of hearts, i truly dont believe its unhealthy

and here's my arguments why

1. Launchpad has complete and free autonomy

A common trait of toxic relationships is a lack of control. The abusee is often under the physical or emotional influence of someone else. Launchpad, however, is not being coerced or manipulated into anything. He can come and go as he pleases and chooses to stay with Drake. He more than often meets DW's huffy demeanor with a calm, knowing smile, proving he's clearly happy to be there by his side.

2. There's a difference between being corrosive and being grumpy

It's no secret that Darkwing has a semi-permanent hot-headed attitude. His casual nips and jabs at Launchpad is probably the most used reason for the argument that their relationship is toxic. The tricky thing is where to draw the line between harmful and imperfect. Let's be honest: Drake Mallard is not perfect. Hardly anyone is. He has his flaws (his roaring ego, a delicate temper), but Launchpad makes room for these flaws and loves him regardless, WITHOUT getting hurt in the process. Drake may be kinda grouchy, and there a few times when his frustration can spill over, but his intention is never to put Launchpad down. On the contrary, he thinks very highly of his sidekick, and values his observations and opinions. Which brings me to my next point...

3. Drake listens when LP's feelings have been hurt and is quick to admit he's wrong

For the most part, Drake's sarcastic quips directed at LP go unnoticed by the latter. Either they go right over his head or he shrugs them off with a smile. But sometimes they bite just a little too hard, and Launchpad's feelings get hurt, which he is quick to voice. You can see Drake immediately deflate in these moments and apologize to Launchpad for being too gruff with him. He knows he can go a little too far sometimes, and looks sincerely regretful at hurting his best friend's feelings. This is not the typical response of a toxic partner. What is, is anger, denial, dismissing, or gaslighting. Drake does none of those things, and instead puts LP's feelings above his own ego.

3. Drake goes out of his way to secure Launchpad

He acts as though Launchpad is beneath him intellectually (and let's face it: he is) but at the root level, he greatly values his input and holds good faith in him. On multiple occasions, Drake can be seen applauding LP for his bright ideas and astute observations, without a hint of cynicism. He even motivates him to perform the ever-difficult Double-Reverse-Paddle-Drop-Boom-Boom Kick because "the ability is inside [him], if [he'll] only believe in himself". On a different note, Drake also monitors Launchpad's emotions and comes through when it looks like he could use some comfort. Many a time throughout the series, DW speaks sweetly to LP after a perceived failure, assuring him that everything is OK and that he did his best. Citing from "Star-Crossed Circuits", DW notices LP has been awfully quiet, and gently asks, "Say, why so glum, chum?" and proceeds to reassure him that he is needed (albeit ineffectively).

Sure, they're a quirky pair, but at the end of the day, they love each other to the ends of the earth, and are their best selves when they're together. And certainly NOT toxic

I wouldn't call it a sensitive matter, but if a particular segment of the fandom (cough, Taekookers, cough) is feeling upset about this, I don't see any issue with that as long as it doesn't lead to hatred toward other members. That's where I draw the line. This isn't your typical BTS content where all members are expected to be present. It's a bit more complex. I think the issue arises from the company's focus on specific pairs most of the time. I'm not implying a conspiracy, but content related to YOONMIN, NAMKOOK, MINIMONI, VMIN, NAMGI, etc., could have been included and celebrated with same enthusiasm over the 10 years.

I believe Jungkook is telling the truth when he mentioned that Jimin wanted to do this, and the company seized the opportunity. If Taekook shippers have an issue with it, they have a right to be. Jikook and Taekook are two of the biggest ships in the fandom. So, if the company focuses solely on one pair and not the other, it's not fair to Taekook enthusiasts or even ARMY who want to see Taekook content. It also sets a certain narrative that can lead to unwarranted hate towards Taehyung (even by OT7). There's no concrete proof or statements regarding any pairing's realness; it's mostly fan speculation, which may or may not be accurate. But to overlook Taekook as a pair for official content, especially for ARMY who believe no member is in a romantic relationship, is setting the stage for unnecessary criticism.

As you've mentioned before, and I agree, Taekook has matured and can handle being on camera together just fine. I can understand any concerns up until 2018, but beyond that, it seems like it's taking a long time to establish that Taehyung can do something for Jungkook without people jumping to conclusions. When people wonder why Taehyung gets more hate, this is a part of the answer. Even now we see Taekook more together in ads than company content. I'm not accusing the company of any malicious intent; they likely made these decisions to protect the members and themselves, but that doesn't mean these decisions can't be flawed. I apologize for the lengthy rant, but it's clear that the company did dirty to Taekookers in this regard.

And people say we are unhinged when most of the things we get are either from the artists or third party sightings. Trust me I understand why jkkrs looks so delulu.

Mmm, that is a complex thing actually right? Because the way we look at this kinda has to do with which perspective we take (though perhaps the outcome is the same on all accounts, just the way we get to it might differ). Gonna think out loud a bit..

If we take the most neutral perspective, that would be that of Armies who don't believe in ships. I kinda wonder if they even think about stuff like this. Do non shippers miss company Taekook content? I really don't know. I think perhaps some might have the same reaction some Tkkrs have to Jkk content. They associate Taekook with Tkkrs and are therefore more busy with fandom reaction than with the actual content. But then again, I follow some (I think..though you never know) neutral blogs and those are always happy to see Tae and Jk together. In general my take is that neutral army does not have the same call for Tkk content as we do... whereas I have seen a call for Vmin content when there was a lack thereof. I'm sure neutrals would love to see Tae and Jk together in something, but I don't know if the demand is actually that high.

Now, let's take the company's perspective... I am of the opinion that the company does not treat both ships equaly, because they know one is not actually a ship. That does change things, because there is the adition of having to keep it a secret.. and.. extra Tkk content will surely get huge fandom reactions. Taking into account that there's arguably more Tkkrs than Jkkrs already.. I'd say they perceive it as an actual risk. That does not necessarily mean that the risk is as high as they perceive it, but they will always base their decisions on worst case scenarios. They protect their business and a part of that is keeping 'scandals' away. Is that unfair? Definitely, the whole closeting situation is unfair. Is it with bad intentions? I mean.. partly? It does actually protect Tae and Jk's privacy and relationship, because imagine the whole world and media being all over them. I'd say the worst thing is that they aren't allowed to be openly queer. Privacy and openness about sexuality should be up to them, and I think the company does have a say in that. I don't know how much of the pairing of Yoonmin, Hopemin, Vmin we got this year is the company's idea or the result of members preferences. I tend to believe Jimin and Yoongi and Jimin and Hobi are actually close and that therefore them being in official content together is natural. But, there's also obviously pr benefits there. People hate me for this, but Jm at Tae's fanmeeting was pr for both.. does that mean their connection is less real? No. Things can be both and it was clear that they both enjoyed being able to do this together. Same goes for Jm and Jk's travelvlog stuff. It's nice that they get to do that together and I think they had a blast and both wanted to do it. But the purpose of it is to entertain Army. And that is where the difference becomes clear in how the company treats Taekook... because I am fairly sure we would never have gotten a Taekook travelvlog (omg how hilarious would that be.. for us 😂)if Tae and Jk had wanted to do it. Sure we get them interacting on lives and they might even do a live together at one point, but actual company released footage... I don't think it's in the stars for us. But... then again you never know and we might just get lucky someday. Sure, not all members get to pair up.. we don't really see Namjoon do anything with anyone as much, but the thing is that Tae and Jk are amongst the closest (if not closest... yes, closest!) pairing and they do not get put together on official content. Unfair or protection? I don't know.. maybe also both.

So our perspective (as Tkkrs) we will always think of it as unfair. We want as much as we can get and we are [rotective of them and we think we know what they themselves would want at times. Do Tae and Jk actually want to be doing something offical together? And to what extent? I still have some hopes for Tae going to support Jk publicly somewhere. I think him being in Suchwita (which could have been edited out) was a step. But I don't think it's going to be much bigger steps than that. Perhaps they'll go to some awardshows together, or with Jimin as well? I think their relationship with Tkkrs is complex. Though it might feel justifying in some way, us screaming too loudly will increase their unsafety. Tkkrs in comments being too bold is annoying for that same reason. They can't come out, so don't push them. I think the company's relationship is equally complex, but obviously not emotionally based. They too have to walk a line between making use of them and keeping them a secret.

Lastly, we have the perception of other ships, mainly Jkkrs. To them, Jm and Jk doing a travelvlog together is proof. I mean, it's probably gonna be worse than the Tokyo GCF. That sucks because I already know the amount of straws in my inbox will be insane and their takes on it will make me cringe out of embarresment and annoyance. But.. that does not mean Jk and Jm shouldn't be able to do this stuff. They want to, they enjoy it.. and I will just avoid straws for a while until things have settled.

I am gonna enjoy seeing Jm and Jk together so much. I love them, love the way they interact and I think it's gonna be super funny. Sure things might be unfair on some level (I don't actually think I have a strong conclusion in here somewhere), but to me that does not stand in the way of enjoying whatever content we get. I think this whole situation makes it hard to be fair to everyone in all aspects.

The anime kinda sucks but the op and the ending slap

I'm a fan of the anime! Though it doesn't really reflect the sheer beauty of Aida's art and color sense ... I do appreciate that it does try, and has very unique color for any anime, and is faithful to panels as best as it can be. I've seen much worse adaptations, much more generic flat anime (for shounens especially..) ... and it's sadly not as if Aida-sensei can personally do color keys for every episode ... it has better color than most anime. Jewel-toned, saturated, vibrant, I can tell they did all they could manage on their budget to follow the vibes of Aida-sensei's vivid covers.

My only like "augh" about the anime is just the kind of hyper-focus the fandom puts on only the anime's scenes, depictions. It's harder to find a good discussion about later arcs that isn't just reactionary!

I love the voice cast, I love that the twins are voiced by the same person, and Ogata-sensei is quite hype about her role as the Yugi, seems friendly with AidaIro-sensei... I like that she was directed to sound "more ghost-y" for Hanako, I love the delivery, and I love the difference in Tsukasa's higher, more perky tones. I'm sure given Ogata-sensei's prominence as a VA, that she was very specifically sought out by AidaIro-sensei.

Meanwhile Nene-chan's VA sings the ED, which I do adore ... it's very sweet that her VA can sing, and I wonder if AidaIro-sensei specifically wanted someone who could, given Nene-chan does like to whimsically sing little songs... Nene-chan's VA actually does like, singing in some sort of idol app game .. though she specifically sings like, lullabies.... ??? (its been a while since I looked though, so forgive me if details are off).... fascinating stuff. As a result, I look forward to future Nene-chan singing scenes being animated... and I wonder if other EDs would have her singing. I like the symbolic simplicity of the ED animation... very lovely.... very thoughtful.. it reminds me of how perfect some of the stage play's scenes are orchestrated, really thematic, really respecting the story's intentions...

I think about ED songs I like, vibes like this one....

OP tend to often be high octane so I rarely ever like them ... Brotherhood has the kind I like-- slow going into an emotional intensity-- focus on hands, gestures, love the shot of Riza in bed, would die for a vibe like that for JSHK... but even Brotherhood's later OPs are more action-oriented and don't work for meee.... ><;;; what I really like about Aida-sensei's art is how much she cares about gesture, expression, composition of a shot, specific lighting conditions ... I find the series so romantic, I wish the OP focused on that.

I don't actually like the OP of the anime LOL, and I feel like fkldsjsdkl; animating Aida-sensei's horny splash page image has genuinely poisoned the fandom into thinking about Tsukasa as some sexual predator WAY TOO MUCH (because they have to justify it as something other than a fun horny illustration, meant to draw in the proper audience.... ) ... again stuff BEING ANIMATED AT ALL means everyone, kind of, obsessively inflate the importance in their brains it feels lol .... I don't like the song really either, I prefer moody or somber OPs...! I would like something romantic and nostalgic.

I've been kinda hoping the announcement of new material is an OVA, because I would actually personally prefer less anime but a higher budget, getting to really explore a single arc, really get to see the faces rotating accurately (the anime never has as pretty of profiles as Aida-sensei draws;;; it kinda defaults.. the front-facing shots are accurate, but others are sortof 'whatever'....)

my favorite thing about Aida-sensei's art is the facial proportions... they look downright ah, weird, from many angles, bugeyed, tend to have an overbite, smooth muzzle.... extremely distinct

Personality:

Mika seems like a polite, discrete girl at first. Amicable, hardworking and passionate, it looks like she fits in the honor student role just fine!

But, Mika is, in fact, going insane. All she wanted was to do whatever she desired while passing under the radar. Be sneaky and avoid conflict or consequences; that was the strategy for all her life. Now, her job is to interact with all of the other quirky students? Mika has to cut herself off from swearing all the time because someone is always here. Fuck.

She tones down her clothes, makeup and eccentric personality at school, hoping to smoothly sail over the storm completely unnoticed. While she's annoyed at her responsibilities, she does enjoy the many, many perks being the 'honor student' gives her, so, she plays into the dumb role Darkwick gave her. However, she just keeps slipping up; saying the damned things on her mind, getting into stupid shenanigans, taking risks left and right... She tries so hard, she really does! But she also can't help but be herself. The more she denies herself that freedom, the more she feels herself grow restless.

Height: 5'7" without heels

Hair: A gradient from light blond to a slightly darker peach color. It's long and a bit messy. The ends are pink but faded- did she dye her hair in the past?

Eyes: Bright but pale teal. Light eyebags. She likes to wear makeup like eyeshadow, eyeliner, gloss and mascara, but sticks to natural colors while out on campus.

Uniform: The classic honor student uniform, customized here and there for personal flare. Never wears the jacket, even in winter. It's too thick and heavy. She likes to wear cardigans over the blouse instead. Her shoes have a higher heel because slay.

anyway uhhhh im struggling to focus bc my neck hurts like fuck so im gonna talk abt max and dizzy. and like elaborate on the whole "theyre the same person" thing

so max is my truesona right? his name (maxamillion) actually has a personal meaning to me. my whole life ive fought with identity and ive always had this sort of scattered sense of self. a lot of that comes from childhood neglect and housing instability growing up. every time i move or something bad happens i feel like i get splintered off into another jagged piece of myself, and as life goes on the older pieces get eroded away until i cant even remember who that person was.

i dont want it to sound like DID or something, because its not. its very different. these "other people" never exist at the same time as one another or anything like that. sometimes i can kinda call back how i was at those times in a nostalgic imitation sort of way, but like. its still me? i guess? i dont know.

maxxy is kinda based off the sort of shameless open bleeding wound of a person i was at one time. i was loud and wasnt embarrassed by it. i was open with what i enjoyed. i was clingy but oblivious and sometimes unrealistic.

dizzy is sort of like the more "rational" side of myself. he thinks hes smarter than max because he's been hurt more. hes more familiar with rejection sensitive dysphoria and has been through the same sort of really bad relationship and amicable breakup i went through, as well as the fallout that caused my entire friend group to splinter. hes apprehensive and distant and refuses to trust anyone to an unreasonable degree, hence the quotations.

hes perpetually trying to knock max down a peg or snuff him out. he reminds him how annoying he is when hes loud, he constantly tells him that expressing any emotion about a situation is manipulative. a lot of his character comes from the song hope by roar (among others) and specifically the line "if your hearts upon your sleeve, amputate the arm." hes very motivated by revenge.

really he comes from a well intentioned place, but hes also aware that hes being harmful. he thinks its for the best.

and in his defense max isnt a good person either, not entirely. hes terrified of losing people, but instead of growing distant to avoid pain like dizzy, he becomes incredibly clingy. constantly disarming himself and asking what he would have to do to keep someone around. he has no sense of self and is willing to just drop everything for someone. even if they hurt him. hes also insecure and somehow also full of himself.

but like, they are also literally the same person. the same dog, i guess. but they can interact physically with each other. dizzy looks exactly like max, just with mirrored fur patterns and is more desaturated in color. his hair is also like....greasier. and matted. max has really soft hair but dizzy spends most of his time in bed or just at home so he doesnt take care of himself. sometimes max can convince him to let him brush it. they have a very codependent relationship with eachother. well, okay that makes it sound romantic. its more like a symbiosis sort of thing. parasitic perhaps. theyll kill eachother together but theyll die if theyre apart.

it actually started with like..giving max an A/B/NLM sorta thing (since i do that a lot actually! give ocs traits from a specific media i like a lot. one of my other sonas shrinks when hes upset like cassie from dragon tales) but it sorta just became what it is now. idk why?? i still sometimes draw max with a flower on his head tho lol. its hard not to involve that when hes my truesona and care and paul r like........the focal points of my entire identity and sense of self rn lol. but theyre also nothing like max so i scrapped that.

idk this makes liek no sense lololol. theres far more "versions" that i might flesh out in the future? but for now its just the two of em. hooty hoo

Entertaining video! To answer your question, @crowleysgirl56, I mentioned something about the turtleneck in a post ages ago that I can't seem to find on my own blog right now (it's that sort of day lol) but I don't think I really explored it so some ideas on it below...

If the question is: why did Crowley decide to wear a turtleneck in this episode?, the answers are just along the lines of he felt like it/he was cold/Aziraphale thinks he looks hot in a turtleneck/all of the above 😂 but if the question is: why did they choose for story reasons to put Crowley in a turtleneck in this episode?, then I think there's a lot more to look at and it all has to do with 1967.

I think that the main reason why Crowley is in a turtleneck in that bit of 2.03 is because they're trying to draw intentional parallels between those scenes and the 1967 scene in S1, which is the other, major time that Crowley wore a turtleneck and which also involved The Dirty Donkey. The theme of both scenes in the story is set up... which is also their purposes from a story structure perspective.

The 1967 scenes are really interesting because they begin as a huge red herring. We have two scenes between Crowley and Shadwell, in which we think we're gearing up to watch a heist plot as Crowley tries to get holy water from a church. We completely think we know what's happening here because we saw 1862 already so when the woman in the first 1967 scene asks what could be so valuable that it's kept in an unlocked church at night, we're all feeling very intelligent as we're silently like HOLY WATER!!!! We aren't incorrect, as that is what Crowley is trying to obtain, but the scenes we are shown make us think we can kick back and know that we're about to watch Crowley and his crew go all Ocean's Eleven on a church... *cough* kinda like how The Final 15 has led an awful lot of people to expect a plot about Supreme Archangel Aziraphale *cough* 😉... only for the show to just smash that expectation entirely by being like 'not the plot, actually' and showing that the heist setup was really only setup for the scene that immediately follows it-- the one in which Aziraphale gives Crowley the holy water and completely undoes all the heist set up.

This heist was never the plot in S1. In S2, though, the opposite might be true. The set up and a robbery/heist might well be the plot that actually does happen-- the robbery of the bookshop in The Final 15, a theme explored over here in this Maggie-and-robbery-themed post.

Anyway, 1967 begins by setting up a story about a set up (a robbery/a heist) for the audience that it then completely kills within minutes of making the audience think it knows what it's about to watch. It's an intentional red herring and, while there are things to mine from the dialogue and other aspects of the scenes they use to set up this red herring? The point is largely that we're watching a scene that is designed to mislead us when it comes to the immediate plot.

In S2, Crowley's Turtleneck of Setup returns for S2's Dirty Donkey scene and a few others that are using the concept of setup in different ways from S1. Instead of setting up plot that won't happen, like what happened with 1967's church heist, The Turtleneck of Setup is here for discussion of set up both in the past and in the near future.

The whole discussion between Crowley and Aziraphale in the pub is about how to romantically set up Maggie and Nina... and that discussion, held within the 1967-paralleling Dirty Donkey and with Crowley again in a turtleneck, is also setting up scenes that, this time, actually did happen and will be things we will, in all likelihood, see in S3. Not red herrings but future flashbacks-- Jane Austen and The Vavoom. There is also Crowley's hand thing in this scene paralleling 1967, which I mention not just because it's another thing tying the two scenes together but for the equally-relevant fact that it's very hot. 😉

While Crowley is touching air in the S2 scene, the visual of it is that his hand is moving in front of the woman standing behind him who is blonde and in blue and tartan. That woman is the paralleling equivalent to the holy water thermos in 1967 and both are, symbolically, pretty obviously Aziraphale. Just as most see Crowley touching the thermos in 1967 as evocative of him touching Aziraphale as if he had the angel in his arms, the paralleling scene to this in S2 is Crowley doing pretty things with his hand in a tartan-involved shot while talking about The Vavoom, which connects those things together a bit and further reinforces the idea that both scenes together are actually helping to setting up a scene showing The Vavoom as Crowley and Aziraphale's first kiss.

Not only might we look at the scene in the pub in S2 differently after S3 after seeing directly (instead of just in the eleven other hints all over the story lol) that Crowley is talking about him and Aziraphale when he refers to The Vavoom but we might also look at the end of the 1.03 Cold Open and it lingering on Crowley touching the thermos differently as well. Honestly, if they toss The Vavoom anywhere close to where I think it's going, you're going to look at every scene differently but that would be straying from Symbolic Knitwear so *stays on track* 😂

There are some other, paralleling Turtlenecks of Setup. Gabriel is in a turtleneck a couple of times and, each time that he's wearing one, an element of set up is occurring in the story. The most significant one is that he's in a turtleneck when Michael brings him the photos of Crowley and Aziraphale and has set up not just Crowley and Aziraphale but Gabriel himself by doing so.

Especially after S2, it is clear that this scene sees Gabriel as much of a target of Michael's actions as Crowley and Aziraphale are and also the extent to which he's pretty screwed here. We know from seeing him interact with Aziraphale in prior scenes in S1 that he undoubtedly was aware of Crowley and Aziraphale being a thing and has been doing what he can to keep others from learning that knowledge. Crowley and Aziraphale see Gabriel as a threat to them but he's actually in their corner and has been for a lot longer than they realize. This Turtleneck of Setup scene in which Michael is trying to set up Gabriel is also story set up that helps to give the audience a different perspective on Gabriel than the ones Crowley and Aziraphale (especially Crowley) have that is also, well, setting up the Jim plot for S2 that sees the three of them and Beez all start to be more openly aligned by the end of it.

Then, there's Crowley in Heaven...

When Crowley switches outfits to blend into Heaven during S2, he's wearing a hilariously whacked hodge podge of paralleling clothes to others in the story-- Muriel's headband, a velour tracksuit a la Mrs. Sandwich, purple-tinted sunglasses in a nod to Gabriel's purple eyes, etc.. 😂 He's also wearing a cream-colored turtleneck, which is close to Gabriel's look in S1 but Gabriel was wearing white while Crowley's is a bit more creamy-beige. (Gabriel also wore his completely up while Crowley folds his down, of course lol.) This choice of shirt is significant, though, because if every other scene involving a turtleneck involves an element of set up... so, too, does this.

You could argue that it's Crowley who is being set up here. There's a way of looking at this where, even if Crowley seems like he's the one in control in setting up Muriel a bit, he's really not. There's a real possibility that Muriel didn't know it but they were being used as bait and were sent to the street because our antagonists (Satan & The Metatron) knew that Crowley would take the humans out of the shop and so would be in the street and take the bait of Muriel because, as creative as Crowley is, he is actually kind of predictable. Crowley's turtleneck in Heaven here could be a hint that while we think we're just watching Crowley set up Heaven, it's really also Crowley who has been set up.

The most significant thing that happens while Crowley is in Heaven is that he sees Gabriel's trial video. This is set up, in terms of plot, because it enables Crowley to know what happened to his fellow turtleneck aficionado, Gabriel, providing the story path to getting Gabriel his memories back and reuniting him with Beez. It could be more than that, though, because if the theory that The Metatron and Satan are working together against Crowley and Aziraphale here is correct, then they lured Crowley up to Heaven to show him this trial video so he'd see the "institutional problem" bit of it, in an effort to make Crowley not concerned about Aziraphale being thrown to Hell should he take the Supreme Archangel job which Satan used to tempt Aziraphale. In that case, it could be that this Turtleneck of Setup is really the villains setting up Crowley as well.

Also suggesting that to be the case? The other Turtleneck of Setup in the story-- the one being worn by another character during this same episode. The one Aziraphale put on the great love of our lives, Mr. Brown of Brown's World of Carpets:

Mr. Brown is not only in a (brown, of course lol) Turtleneck of Setup... he's in one while wearing an outfit inspired by the fashion of the late 1960s. Part of the humor here is definitely that Aziraphale has given Mr. Carpet a Crowley-inspired makeover-- that matching vest 😂-- but Mr. Brown also looks like he could be at a party in the latter seasons of Mad Men and that's another way of tying the turtlenecks to their place or origin: Crowley's black one in the 1967 scene.

If Crowley and Gabriel are wearing turtlenecks in scenes of set up then, well... so is Mr. Vacuum, right? He even first appeared in our story in the 1967-paralleling Dirty Donkey scene. That all makes The Meeting Ball a set up. In some ways, it is visible as one already, as it's the payoff for what was discussed a little in that scene in the pub-- it's the scene for the Jane Austen-ball to set up Maggie and Nina. Given what we just said about Crowley in Heaven, though, and how we are looking at different meanings of set up often happening at once in these scenes, it seems likely that there's more happening here than we have yet to see fully play out.

Especially since Shax seems to be wearing a leather Turtleneck of Setup and she's the one who sets the whole of the end of S2 into motion.

I'll leave you with the Aziraphale parallel in the Crowley-inspired clothes, including a black turtleneck, who has been set up something fierce by Aziraphale in this scene.

- I love how when summarising what season 2 is about Danny says it’s about trying figure out “why Gabriel has shown up on Aziraphale’s door step naked”. Yep, you also missed the vital part about having lost his memory! 🤣

- Danny doesn’t think the statue looks like Jon Hamm and OMG I feel so seen now because neither did I! Like HOW HARD could it have been to have made that thing look more like him?!
