In reference to the last ask you posted! Do you mind going over your tips on role-playing as that active-type character and/or digging up the thread of conversation it seems the original asker was referring to? I'm so interested in your experience role-playing for both prep in possibly joining a game someday and also bc it sounds like such good character creation and general writing advice!!!! I tried checking you blog but didnt turn up anything that touched pn it more (No worries if not though!)

My advice is make characters that create opportunities for story.

Reacting to a story is fun! Reacting to a character is fun! But if you're always reacting then you're creating opportunity for other characters to react, so sometimes you gotta Act to let the other characters and the story React.

To do this, characters should all want something. And not something vague (like "to be happy"), it should be something more tangible, more specific, and everything else can stem from there. It'll guide your character naturally. It's their Motivation.

More under the cut (or skip to the end for more standard advice)

For example, my dnd character Dandelion wanted more than anything to go home. "Going home" meant a lot of things, yeah it means being happy, it means he wants to be with his family, it means he wants to be loved, it means he wants to feel safe, it means he wants to belong somewhere, but the tangible idea is "go home."

Because I knew this is what he wanted most of all it guided all his actions, and his actions for better or for worse all made sense because of it (and I made it clear that was what he wanted "on-screen" on multiple occasions). So anything that involved the idea of getting home would activate him, and he'd also deeply empathize with anyone and anything else away from home/away from family. Giving him one strong, clear motivation instantly made him an active participant in the story. This made him active with other characters too, any mention of home, any mention of family, any idea of not belonging, it drew him toward them.

(as a DM now this is also what I need more than anything, what's your hook? how can I tempt you? how can I make your character move forward? how can I make your character react? also characters that create opportunity for story take a LOT of work off the DM's shoulders in my experience, it shows you're engaged and it feels less like dragging a cat around on a leash haha like "are you enjoying this? do you want this? i don't know! please give me something!")

my more standard advice?

Be a good listener

Be present (in the moment)

Be curious

Be the biggest fan of all the characters

Put your story on-screen frequently, give people the opportunity to react to it and join in on it (this can be as simple as "my character's body language changes at the mention of 'home')

Create opportunities for the other characters to have their story on-screen (ask them questions! if you know what the character's buttons are and it makes sense in the moment, press them! listen to what they're saying, pay attention to what they're doing, and react to it)

Interact with the world! Interact with each other! And make these things mean something to your character!

Your character should make mistakes. Mistakes create opportunity for everyone.

If there's a genre, or theme, play toward them earnestly.

The more you RP, the better you'll get at it! It's a process and that's okay!

my little tip for knowing whether your character is Active vs Reactive: if the story were a musical, do they have an I Want song? do they have multiple moments for songs within the narrative? have they shared a duet with another character? do their songs change, evolve? songs happen for important moments in a musical so if you're not contributing to important moments, it may mean you're reacting more than you're acting. which is fine if you're playing a game solo and are granted access to the narrative by virtue of being the designated main character, but because RPing is collaborative storytelling, everyone should be doing their part!

a quick guide on how to plot in a rp group

Hello friends. As I journeyed through different groups I noticed a trend in interactions with writers and trying to plot with them for their characters. It seemed like there was a disconnect on what plotting means and that was making answering plot calls really difficult and frustrating. I wanted to whip together a quick guide with actionable items to help with plotting! However, I think it's important to also note that plotting doesn't have to be deep — they can something simple that leaves a lot up to chemistry. Even "random" interactions can be used for plotting purposes for people that really work well off of chem. Everyone is different, and both plots and chem are great ways to write together!

plots vs connections

One of the biggest mistakes that I've seen with plotting is that people mistake plots for connections and vice versa. A Plot is an actionable item that you can use to write the characters doing something. It can be a broad character arc, or several points of conflict or interaction that generates threads. True plots make it easy to generate a thread from some context to what we think will start the interaction between the two characters.

examples: one character took another character's coffee order. one character caught another character from falling. one character likes art and the other doesn't and they went to a museum.

A Connection is how the characters know each other. This can be familial relationships, platonic relationships, romantic relationships, and so on.

examples: they met at a coffee shop. they went to the same festival. they are exes. they're cousins.

Often, connections are a great place to start, as the plot can be built off from the connection. However, if it's left at just the connection (such as, they're cousins!) it can be hard to create a thread or interaction from the connection. If the characters are cousins, or they did meet at a coffee shop, what's their relationship like? How did that first coffee interaction go? Or do you want to write that coffee interaction based off chemistry? Either way, those questions help you plot!

tips on ways to maximize plotting

Read the other character's bio or about. If you don't have one for your character, make one so that people can use these content pieces as a way to start to think about their character in context to yours. Most people are pretty good at figuring out a connection, but have an issue taking it to the actionable idea. Think about general interactions you have had with people in your life, or something you've witnessed, one of those could be starting point for a thread!

Create a wanted plots page that has some simple interactions you'd like to explore. People might not read it, but then you've at least got ideas for people who might be struggling as well to think of how to plot with your character.

Check out the wanted plots tags, there's tons of great ideas for unique plots that you could use and adapt for other plots.

Think about what parts of your character that excites you. What quirks or strengths do they have that make for interesting interactions with people? I find that starting here often helps to build threads I am excited for — chemistry based ones!

Use the yes, and or the no, but methods to build in conversations with other writers. Meaning that if someone comes up with something you think could work, agree with it and then build off of it. If the idea doesn't work, however, come up with something else that is more in character that could work.

Don't be afraid to send something off the wall, and don't be afraid to turn something down that doesn't work, just be willing to build off those ideas!

If you're into chemistry over plotting, think of places a starter or thread could be at and what the two characters could be doing. This could be in addition to a connection you've selected.

FAVORITE TYPE OF THREAD: I love love love experimenting and trying out all different types of threads, shifting between muse and genre. Over time, I think I've most come to enjoy writing intensity...in fighting, in tension, or in love. Action will always be a winner in my book, but I also really like writing that drills down into the details...simple conversations or interactions that allow me to explore more of the characters and the world(s) that they live in. (Yes, this is why I typically write so much LMAO)

FAVORITE THING ABOUT MY MUSE: My Clair is so much more than the angry badge-refuser who you first see in-game, and that's solely because of all the conversations, threads, and brainstorming that has happened with others since I first picked her up more than seven years ago now...she's evolved so much, and if you're reading this, THANK YOU. This community has really inspired and informed her growth over time. (I will always love building minor characters up into their own full-fledged selves, and I'm grateful that I have a supportive space to do just that. 😊)

HOW YOU LIKE TO RP: honestly? I like to establish a scene or loose plot and go from there. if things get intense, I'll make it a point to check in with my writing partner more frequently--but I love quickly landing on a dynamic and setting, and then seeing how the interaction crescendos over time! I love a quick-hitting interaction as much as I love a slow buildup, with many narrative twists and turns. I'm adaptable. 😉

(I do tend to write a lot, but that's only because I'm big on leaving my writing partners multiple threads to pull on in their own replies. I always want to leave you with enough to work with, while also letting you steer the story in your own way...that open-endedness is super important to me!)

WHERE YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION FROM: honestly? above everything, sports. I love sports. I love competition, and watching the very best clash against each other--there's no rawer tension or emotion--and the storylines it produces are unmatched. all of my muses, to some extent, are chasing after something with all their hearts, or maintaining excellence at the top of their games...they love competing, taking everything that life gives them. they have lost before, but they always get back up because they love to win.

A good book or show can also really influence me, too! I'm currently working my way through some Dimension 20 DND campaigns. (Tabletop has been a major boon to the creative me in 2024.)

FACT ABOUT YOU: I love card games (MTG, Pokemon, Yugioh) and was my local game store's 'in-store champion' in MTG for a few years. (The title didn't really mean anything but I got some pretty dope playmats and discounted product out of it, which is a win in my book!)

In regards to the restructuring of my muses to help them be a little bit more pleasant to rp with, I think the majority of my muses are okay - I think it's just mainly Thursday and Doomsday who I'm having some problems with, and that's probably because they're my two main muses. I haven't had any issues with Cyrus or Stanley, as far as I can think.

So, I think for Thursday, I'm planning on internally working on having her be more open with her Office friends. That should help her out in threads with outside muses. It seems simple enough, and it is, but by simply allowing her to have conversations with her closest Office friends - who would be Cyrus, September, Doomsday, and Oleander - she will be able to easier process a lot of the traumas she holds internally, including issues with being able to trust others, depression, anxiety, and existential dread. Ideally that will help her be able to be more enjoyable in threads and not close up as much. It's because she tends to close off from people that makes it difficult for her to form connections, and because it's difficult for her to form connections, it's difficult for people to care about her as a character. At least, it feels that way to me, and so this is a small tweak I'd like to make to her character and see where things go.

For Doomsday, oh boy, haha. We've got our work cut out for us here. She's actually somewhat making progress in a "good" direction thanks to a thread I have going with @5mind ! Depending on how that pans out, she may continue to go in that direction and continue to be able to be more open with others. I'd really like for her to be able to open herself up to others more, it's just extremely difficult due to how much she's been hurt. I don't want to change that aspect too much. So, what I'd like to change, is her to tendency to antagonize people so much. Not completely, but I'd like to kick it down a notch. Or two. Or three. I feel like... while it's fun for me to write her antagonizing people and even bullying muses sometimes, I don't think everybody appreciates it, and I don't think everybody appreciates it to the degree and frequency with which it happens. I'm going to rein in this aspect of her personality and make her a little bit easier to get along with and see how that goes in threads. Believe me, if she were in a book, I'd not give a fuck as much, but since this is roleplay and I want to write her with others, I'm trying to come to some sort of happy medium.

Those are my thoughts for now. I might make some more tweaks later, but yeah, gonna try that out and see where things go.

I still plan on focusing more on writing and things on my blog, so I don't plan on going out and asking to start threads with others. I feel like I've been opening threads a lot lately with other people and I don't want to overwhelm anybody. If I'm not overwhelming you, let me know and I might still send things your way if you like. 🎭 How similar are you and the muse?

i'd say we're similar enough that i can relate to a lot of yuri's actions! we both tend to stray toward sarcasm, teasing, and easygoing 'tudes in regular conversation, but still get clocked as mature and collected enough to be relied on... from what i'm told, at least; i share a lot of his stubborn opinions, too (unfortunate emphasis on stubborn).

i'm usually a lot more expressive, though! and i wouldn't say i'm anywhere near as impassive or "rude" lol. i care way too much about the impression i give off comparatively.

⌨ What’s a situation you’ve always wanted to RP with the muse?

anything related to his vigilantism! whether that means a situation where he feels compelled to do it again, going head-to-head with someone over ideological differences, or even just for once -- ONCE! -- opening up about the ways it's impacted him. the game has deep conversations regarding his friends' acceptance, but since it's often centered around the person he's speaking to, his own feelings are usually put on the back-burner in favor of their struggles coming to terms with it. the deflection's intentional on yuri's part, but i wanna write that vulnerability so bad!!!

i mean, he still visits the scenes of his crimes post-game, so... definitely not over it!

😒 Is there anything canon about your muse that you ignore?

this one line in the japanese version of The First Strike™ where he says "i don't swing that way" to piss off a shitty bar patron. dude's lying!!! (i interpret that scene as him being a cheeky bastard, but i wouldn't be surprised if anyone took it seriously).

everything surrounding his swordsmanship! the childhood prequel novels expand on it so much and it reveals a lot about his personality, too. from using every piece of saved-up gald to help flynn buy his old sword back and asking him to be his teacher, learning how to read and write just so he could understand a training handbook, developing his own fighting style + the way axes played a role in that... there's so much i can't even begin to go into since it plays such a large role in his backstory -- and the lower quarter's -- but it's really good, i swear.

👀 Favorite thing about the muse’s appearance?

ALL OF IT…? jk, i know his hair's the expected cop-out answer, but it's one of his most prominent features-- from a character-building standpoint and a visual one (just look at the wide array of 'dos he's gotten in official art). i often imagine him sporting different styles in each thread, too, even if i can't represent that in my icons.

“Kill me,” A voice whispered,” Just... kill me.”

A sharp jolt flashed over Steve’s back as his eyes snapped open. His heart drummed against his chest as he slowly rolled over and raised his hands to his face. Anxiety had begun to build up within his throat as he let out a solid sigh to gain some sort of release— no prevail. And for some reason that was just his cue to get some coffee.

No one needed to know this, but Steve donned some pretty slick puppy slippers that were absolutely the most comfortable things in the world. He shuffled across the floor of his small apartment, avoiding himself from bumping into unnamed objects like his boots or maybe a lamp— Steve was not a morning person. 

Coming into the kitchen, he made himself some coffee. Well, tried would be the better word. First, he forgot his own strength, there went 99% of the coffee grounds just splatting against the ground, his counter and his face. Then, when he tried to redeem himself, he scooped in some grounds and got the coffee maker to work— Oh wait, it started smoking. 

The deadpan look that Steve gave the coffee maker was so much that he eventually turned it off and began cleaning his mess. Tea was a great option, so he made that instead and went to go sit outside for the time being. There he looked over the city and sipped his warm beverage before making the worst face ever.

“What is this?” He muttered as he just put the mug to the side and flopped in his chair.

Some days she would have sworn she was more her pack than herself. As if her body was merely going through the motions, the heart of her caught in with the whers. Dressing, eating, paperwork, went by like ghosts in comparison to her blue’s patrols, to bloody meat down a gullet, social posturing, running, the thread of Command, the first inklings of a future run, what felt like countless conversations happening through, within, and around her-

With discipline built off Turns of experience, she forced her mind solid again. Dragged it, like a mule from deep mud, out of each mind in turn, from the weakest hold of the day to the strongest. Always her first, her great shining darling who would keep his place after she was long dead she was sure. Each wher stopped as she did so, she could feel them halt whatever they had been doing and wait with caring patience. Slowly, she returned to herself, flexing fingers and toes, feeling them as she hadn’t all day. Sighing as she sorted her own mind, distinct but connected to her Bondeds, like the pools of a hot spring.

“Darlings,” she said, aloud and through their bonds, as she relaxed in her own skin. A simple acknowledgement, reinforcement that despite this she was still Theirs, they were still Hers, and no ill feelings were held.

This was simply a fact of being Them. Of being the only one of such a group that was not themselves telepathic or empathic. Sometimes they were, through no fault of their own, overwhelming, and she had to reassert herself as a being rather than a part of them all. Not so much a problem when you only had one Bonded, but when there were so many… She’d gotten more than her fair share of accolades and drinks from handlers and riders both, in honor of her fortitude. It was a rare lot who could manage more than one, and a full pack was rarer still.

Her kin, who had at no point expected or wanted her for whers, bragged about her to people. She really didn’t feel she deserved it.

The acknowledgment, the reassurance, was enough for her pack and one by one, from first to last as time gave security, they pressed their own reassurances and affection on her and each other before turning back to what they had been doing. Just in case, she gave a gentle reach through each bond, barely a brush on the mind, before refocusing on what was in front of her.

She was going to have to redo all this paperwork.

Questions about your view of Hyde in relationships (for research purposes and bc I want to put your version of Hyde in my mouth and chew him like gum /pos):

-How does jealously work for Hyde? Does he only feel it for certain people or in certain situations? What are situations that would make him jealous? To use current rp relationships as examples - how would he feel if Dorian started flirting with a waiter while they were on a date vs Dorian coming back covered in hickeys? Or someone flirting with Gabriel vs Gabriel being in a relationship with more than just Hyde?

-How does Hyde express love, since they seem to be unable to verbally articulate it a lot of the time? In more simple words, going by a commonly known system, what would be their love language? How do they prefer to receive love vs how do they show it?

-This is only half a relationship question but. If your Hyde sat down with a modern day psychologist and a DSM5, what diagnoses would it walk out with? How do these different things effect it’s relationships with other people?

-Hyde is a pretty jealous guy when it comes to the people he's latched on specifically. Usually they're very careless- he is disconnected from humanity in general and what any dumb human being does is NOT his business... but if it involves the very few people he tolerates, then yes, they are jealous, even possessive, with the last threads of his moral compass acting as a buffer at times to prevent him from getting downright creepy. If Dorian started flirting or making out with someone during a date he'd get more mad that he's not paying attention to it and "getting distracted".

nOW, if we're talking Gabriel, breathing in his direction would be a perfect recipe for disaster. And Hyde only lets him see other people because (through gritted teeth) thats what makes Gabriel happy. What, nobody said Hyde was a good person to date.

-They show love through physical attention and body language, like... walking over to someone, getting close, touching them, nuzzling them, the works. However, it's aware their touch puts people on edge, so ironically enough he avoids touching the people he loves the most, at least at first.

But, in general, I think their love language is, in terms of giving love, more like, quality time, you know? If he can't touch you at least it can sit by you in silence, reading a book, just... blessing you with his presence, I suppose. And this isnt just a Hyde think; Jekyll has always been like that. In terms of receiving I think he's the type to like gifts and little details like preparing a fancy date or expensive stuff, they LOVE to be pampered and made to feel special.

This means that, if Hyde REALLY loves you and does not only see you as a fucktoy OR a temporary fling, he will be simultaneously very touch starved AND very skittish. He's basically a cat. He wants to cuddle but he's afraid you will not like it, which is something that never applies to one night stands or week-long things.

-Eddie Hyde is undiagnosable <3 ok ok i was kidding. I think he'd be diagnosed with ADHD, autism, dissociative depersonalization, a nasty addiction to (gestures broadly) lots of things, and maybe also ASPD or at the very least w antisocial behaviors plus paranoia.

I think that if he was diagnosed as Jekyll the ASPD and the ADHD would have been less noticeable because Jekyll is MASKING SO MUCH it hurts, but conversely, they would have gotten the OCD label slapped on. I'm not entirely sure if Jekyll/Hyde has full on OCD but his brain is indeed intrusive thoughts central. Their thoughts are 80% HHHGMGHGM YOU DID A BAD YOU'RE GOING TO HELL FOREVERRRRRR.

If you want a honest answer: Jekyll doesn't like people very much, with few exceptions, and is INCREDIBLY arrogant and self-centered to the point he has ZERO qualms with being mean to their friends (all three of them) and his "social" persona is just an elaborate act that drains him a lot. So as Hyde he just... lets it all out and that's why he's LIKE THAT.

And? please? dont put Hyde in a salad spinner, he will get dizzy.

I'm in the Central time zone.

I’ve been RPing on other sites and tumblr collectively for well over 10 years. I’m mostly multi-para, but I do not mind shorter responses either. I’m very much quality over quantity. You can always feel free to reach out to me OOC via the ask box, tumblr IMs, or Discord (given upon request to mutuals.) I’m open to chat about RP or anything else. It is not required, I just find I write better with with people who I can chat with.

P.S. I’m always on throughout the week, but my replies are normally written on Fridays, Saturdays, or Sundays. Sometimes I can get to them throughout the week, but I have the most energy on those days. I’m always open to plot and chat any day of the week! I do throw things into a queue if threads start to pile up, which isn't always the case.

Ren's Guide To RP

Terms to Know

Muse- A character you write for in RP/Fanfiction. A character that inspires you to write.

Plot- A storyline you plan to write. In RP, this is typically done with another person.

Thread- An RP between two or more people.

OC- Original Character. A character YOU created. Or maybe an alternate version of a canon character

Ship- Slang for relationship. Typically of the romantic kind.

Fanfiction - Solo writing done usually for self-indulgent headcannons, ships, alternate endings or alternate plotlines Can be collaborative but not in the same way as RP

AU- Alternate Universe. A universe not related to canon

Headcannons- Your own ideas for a character. Things you think a character would like, think, wear, say, do that isn't in Canon.

Canon - Base material. A show, movie, book or piece of writing that AUs, headcannons and plotlines come from.

Canon-Divergent- Anything that isn't quite canon but still complies with Canon material

Verse- Similar to an AU but it can apply to a certain universe you created with someone else or just for your character.

Tips for Plotting {RP}

Communication is key! Tell your RP partner your ideas, show them your muses, make connections! Get to know their character and let them get to know yours!

Don't overwhelm your partner! When plotting, it's best to follow the simple rule of K. I. S. S {Keep it simple, Sally}. Your character has an elaborate backstory? Cool! Make sure you find a way to connect them to your partner's muse! They can't interact with yours very well if you don't leave room for them to make an appearance/ meaningfully interact with your muse.

Don't Godmod! Remember when you were a kid and other kids would still your toys and butt in to what you were doing? Annoying and rude, right? Yeah, that's just what it's like when you Godmod. Don't do it!

Questions to ask yourself before asking someone to plot/RP

What is my Muse's connection to my partner's muse? Can there be a connection made? How can they meet?

When our muses meet, what kind of relationship will they have? Remember, take into account the personality and backstory of BOTH muses. Why do they have this kind of relationship? Have they interacted before? What do they have in common?

How will they react to certain things said or done to them? Are they an asshole? Are they nice and meek? Would they kill you for merely breathing in their direction? Take this into account when you pick a character to play with. 9/10 people aren't going to change how their character acts for you. They are not your personal fanfic writers!

*And remember, if you aren't sure or you need help, ask your partner about their ideas or any advice they might have.

Communication is key!

If your partner can't work with what you're throwing at them, take a step back and ask yourself why. Ask them why. Work with them. This is something you're writing TOGETHER. They need to be able to respond. Think of it as if you were in their shoes. Could you respond to what you're about to send them? If you're having a hard time writing it, they're probably going to have issues with responding to it

Check yourself before you ask someone to RP. Also, don't be afraid to talk to the Mun OOC too. Usually, if you two vibe OOC, your characters probably will too but not always.

[[I am really very introverted and anxious, even over text conversations.

I joked when I reblogged this very meme that you basically have to @ me in group chats to make me appear but that's kind of true honestly.

If we talked about starting something and then I got busy and disappeared for months.... yeah that might not happen now. I feel far too anxious coming to stuff "late" so to speak. If you still really want that thread, you aren't annoying me by poking or reminding me. You're confirming to me we're still good to go because I've probably overthought the idea of saying anything to you after "too long".

If you want anything in general ^^; you have to make that pretty obvious. I've had it a few times now where people have told friends or my spouse they'd like to interact with me and get to know me, but never gave me any indication directly, so it was never apparent to me. There's a lot of reasons that doesn't work but in simple terms, if you have an anxiety disorder you're going to connect dots even if they aren't there. Does that make sense? A huge facet of anxiety and related disorders is reading between the lines even when there's nothing actually in the margins.

Honestly though talking to me is the same as anyone else:

Ask me questions, @ me to let me know you want to hear from me. Tag me in random stuff. TALK TO ME. Come to me with RP ideas OR let me know what muses of mine you want to interact with and we'll bake something together. Really just invite me into whatever is going on. If you come at me with enthusiasm I'll do my best to return it. You might have to do it a few times for it to really click with me but once it's there, trust me, we'll be fine. Some folks can manage to get me to be pretty lively once I'm comfortable with them. It's not an all the time thing, but even some of the time is pretty impressive.

Oh gosh there are a few I love.

The thread where Red ( @twilighttheater )and Hilda confessed to one another is one favorite. It was just them dancing in the kitchen of her house to a song that’s actually an oh wonder song I adore for them. Simple cute setting and so mundane but turned out so great.

N ( @sumofn ) and Hilda having a middle of the night conversation at Alder’s cabin about trauma and mixed feelings regarding one another because of it. It felt realistic. This ‘I’m thankful for you but you also ruined all I knew’ and ‘I don’t blame you but yes I didn’t get out of everything unscathed’. It’s a messy reunion and was fun to write and explore the aftermath of how much those two characters went through in BW.

The original dragon/full Kyurem thread with @divimperator was a blast to write. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time even though we’d plotted the outcome. I had never written a battle before and Tekk was fantastic to write one with. They made it very straightforward and not stressful like I always thought battle rps would be.

The castle run in thread prior to the final battle of BW with @unovasrose . It was short but exploring Hilda’s thoughts and emotions when working through the castle was very enjoyable. Hilda still doesn’t know the girl that helped her was Rosa, but she does remember that kindness.
