when he ghosted her, she blamed the fandom. in part because she felt ashamed she alienated us* for the sake of this guy who fucked her over and so focused on the fact she shouldn't have had to and the fact that she did was, itself, a red flag. the disdain of our* self righteousness was blaming us for the fact she had to alienate us and it still wasn't enough to keep him around vs blaming him for that. because blaming him would blame her too.

I think I have such a hard time coming up with/fleshing out certain ideas for MCD sometimes because the series is so fast. Like on one hand it's 237 episodes, which is a lot, but there's still no break time like ever. Most of the time that there's proper downtime in the story is in the earlier parts of Season 1. And on one level I get that's part of the point, right? These are a bunch of incredibly fucked up people with no time to get their shit together before the end of the world is thrust upon them and they don't even know it yet.

But it's so disappointing. Because I have all these great ideas for story beats or character moments that just wouldn't have time to fit into the original. And sure that's what my rewrite is for but... Augh, idk I feel like I'm not entirely making sense. Just, like Laurance's Shadow Knight condition. It starts off very mild and gets progressively worse as time goes on, but the change can feel so sudden in the canon and even rewriting it can make it hard to give it the time to develop. I always think of it like a chronic illness/condition that afflicts him slowly over the course of years, but in reality it's like the course of months. I just want the world to slow down a little so these poor bitches can talk about their feelings.

All this comes down to the main structural problems I have with MCD as it pertains to the focus eventually shifting. Sometime in season 2 Jess got really into the lore and a lot less into the characters she had already spent so much time building up and the series lost focus. I'm not interested in the relics because I give a shit about finding out Irene's secrets or whatever, I'm interested in how the presence of the relics really effects these people. Give me Garroth having a crisis over the fact that he and Esmund are so similar it can be hard to tell whether he believes something or whether the relic believes it. Give me Travis, the show boat, the flirt, being unable to stand the sight of his reflection because it either reminds him of his fucked up heritage, or because when he looks at his own reflection sometimes he looks exactly like Enki.

I just wish the focus had remained on what truly drew people into the series. I can read complex lore about characters I don't ever really see on the RWBY wiki. My attachment to MCD even after all these years is because these characters had an impact on me. I connected with them in a way I hadn't connected with a cast of characters before, and I doubt I'm alone in that. I just wish that the thing that keeps me coming back to the series remained the focus instead of becoming a lower priority. The story was being carried by the characters and their interactions, as it should be. It should never feel like the story is just dragging them around.
