When Sam catches Tara looking off into the distance, blank-faced and drifting away from reality, she'll grab her around the middle and heave her into the air. She'll spin her around, an act that has never failed to make her giggle, from the very first time when they were kids. They always end up on the floor with several new bruises, out of breath and incapable of looking at one another without bursting out into laughter.

Sam doesn't know it's Tara on the other end of the phone. She thinks it's someone else, uses some other name. She rambles on to this girl she thinks she is, and Tara lets her. She mmhhhmms at the right moments, coaches her on as Sam slurs her words. Sometimes the things she say doesn't make sense, but Tara pretends they do anyway. She'll do anything to keep her on the line a little longer, to hear her voice one more time. Sam doesn't always pick up the unknown number that she calls her from, not in her moments of lucidity, but Tara lives for the moments that she does.

Sam answers once, voice heavy with sleep, but entirely sober. Tara hangs up, unable to force words from her throat, the memory of the time she called to hear Sam's laughter down the phone, sounding so happy. How could Tara interfere with that? I miss you. I love you. Please come home.

Ok, we all love the Carpenter sisters, but how many times do you think Tara found a way to contact Sam after she ran away but Sam was too high or drunk to know who was on the other side of the phone call?

Tara loses her sister and she snaps at the next fool to get in her way. The one she hunted down herself, the one who took her away from her. Amber watches her from the front, urging her on, smile wide and gleeful as Tara stabs and stabs and stabs and stabs. She's on her knees, down in front of the body, like she's fascinated, like she needs to look closer, like she's something real and not just some demon haunting her. If Tara closes her eyes, lets her mind drift, lets the gurgles from beneath her and the warmth flowing over her skin pass her by, then she can almost imagine she's somewhere else, somewhen else, Amber's "you're doing so good baby, I'm so proud of you" could be something comforting. But when she opens them again, the world is nothing but grey and red.

Everything is quiet now, broken only by her panting and the cracking of her heart, and the sad soft "Tara," from behind her. But Tara can't look. She can't take it anymore, can't bear to turn and see nothing. She can't- she can't.

"Oh babygirl, what have you done."
