The Second Mate

Chapter 1

Something was going to happen today.

She wasn’t sure how or when or if, but something inside her screamed imminence. Of course, it could be her anxiety that she was taking a pharmacy’s worth of meds for; Nevertheless, something felt off about today.

It was first day of 12th Grade in a new school in a new town, and after looking around a bit she was sure she was the only immigrant there. She was, however, used to being the outsider. She was a 200-pound-something, Foreign nutjob with mental illnesses that would petrify a small Victorian child. ADHD and Anxiety was pretty common to be fair but she was pretty sure Psychosis wasn’t.

She went through her morning routine as usual. It was more of a ritual than a routine at this point. It had to get done otherwise something bad would happen. She started her routine by doing her skincare routine. Face wash first, then toner, then serum, moisturizer and SPF. She had to look her best at all times otherwise… well there was no otherwise. She had to look perfect. She continued with brushing her hair and tying it into a neat ponytail. She then brushed her teeth for exactly 60 seconds then followed up with mouthwash for 30 seconds.

After finishing her ‘ritual’ she left her little en-suite and went back  into her cozy little bedroom. She decided on a beautiful dress with tiny pink flowers on it. She forwent a bra as she usually did (they were evil boob prisons) and put on her white frilly socks. She put on a pair of gorgeous but fake pearl earrings and necklace and went downstairs to leave the house.

“You’re going to school, not a fashion show,” greeted her mother. She ignored her as always and went out the door after picking up her backpack, which was pink of of course, and wearing her her shoes. It was time.

“Are you sure we’re meeting her today?” Asked Emmet, who was excited but suspicious he would finally be meeting his second mate after waiting nearly 70 years. Rosalie, on the other hand, was anything but excited. She did not like the thought of sharing her only mate to a puny little human girl. She frowned.

“Yes! Stop hounding me, I saw it happen, you’ll meet her today!” Alice being Alice didn’t really mind sharing hers. She was actually kind of excited too.

“Are you sure?”

“YES, EMMET!”

Jasper, however, wasn’t sure what to expect today. He too had waited for nearly 70 years for his second mate alas he was more apprehensive then excited. He was scared. She was human and humans were fragile little things. What if he broke your hand while trying to hold it, or finally broke his streak and ate you?

“You’ll be fine” declared Edward. The little asshole couldn’t help listening his  thoughts.

Jasper ignored his brother and gave a big sigh. He followed the rest of his siblings to their cars that would be taking them to school today; Rosalie’s red Cadillac and Edward’s silver Volvo. 

The ride to school was terrible. Though at least Emmet was happy. Jasper could feel his giddiness. He kept hounding Alice questions about their mate except he didn’t allow her to answer any of them.

“How does she look like?”

“Is she short, or tall?”

“Is she a blonde or a brunette?”

“Will she like us?”

“Do you think I’m her type?”

“When will we meet her again?”

 “SHUT UP, EMMET!”

She was lucky she lived only about 30 minutes away from school. Americans would probably think that an absurd amount but where she was from it was a perfectly acceptable distance.

She wiped the sweat off her face and stared at Forks Highschool. It was definitely one of the smaller schools she’d went to. As she was walking into the building to find the secretary she was stopped by a small girl.

“Hi! You must be the new girl! We’ve been expecting you for ages!”

Her cheeks blushed a soft pink. She didn’t know she’d be this popular already.

“Hi, umm yeah this is she- I mean I am her.” Fuck, she was awkward. Come on sertraline, do your job!

Alice giggled, Jasper’s mate was cute. “I’m Alice, and these are my siblings.”

Just as she was about to wonder where they were, four beautiful pale strangers appeared before her. Her heart was fluttering like crazy, the blond and the brunet guys were HOT.

Alice went on to introduce Edward, who gave her a small smile, then Rosalie, who had already decided to hate her and answered with a glare. The giant brunet left Rosalie’s side to her dismay and extended his hand and gave a charming smile: “I’m Emmett, we’ve been expecting you.” Just as she was about to answer Emmett she was interrupted by the tall blond guy. Well, his sudden departure.

Her heart was palpitating, what had she done? She had just met them she could not have possibly offended them already, could she?

“Jasper is just anxious, nothing to worry about.” Edward had heard her thoughts and decided to take pity on her.

“Oh, okay…” He answered her thoughts as if she spoke them out loud, was she that obvious? Alice meanwhile had linked their arms together and was dragging her to the school. “You have AP Gov first period, let me take you!”

Wow, how did Alice know what her first period was? She decided she would not be friends with the beautiful pale siblings. They were weird and they overwhelmed her senses. She removed her arm from Alice. “Uh, I’ll just have to go to administration before class. You can go ahead, don’t miss class for me.” She didn’t care if Alice and the beautiful pale siblings following behind her missed their classes; she just did NOT want to be near them anymore.

Rosalie suddenly huffed and left their side, which led Emmet to follow behind her after giving her a wink and an excited smile. Edward gave a sigh of exhaustion and left after giving them a small wave. She was alone with Alice now.

“No worries! I’m sure Mr. Webster will understand when I tell him I was helping the new girl!” Her smile never left her face. It creeped her out to no end.

Alice took her arm without even allowing her to give a reply and dragged her to what she thought was administration. She had a feeling she could not escape Alice, nor the other siblings.

TMNT Headcanon #3: Bayverse Mikey is the only Mikey that is very very bad at cooking, and here’s why:

If anyone has seen Bayverse, you would know Mikey is the walking embodiment of ADHD in the best way possible. I hc that he is very bad at cooking because his attention span simply won’t allow it

Either he forgets it’s in the oven/cooking until I a shrivelled black piece of charcoal, gets impatient and so he pulls it out to early and basically eats it raw, changes his mind multiple times through the cooking process and tries to change it (when no, you really shouldn’t do that, you can’t unbake a cake dammit -), gets far too ambitious and stuck in his own imagination that he creates something horrific or so confusing that it’s inedible, or is like “yeah I don’t have any sugar but salt looks the same so I will use that instead” if he runs out of ingredients. His cooking is dangerous.

Raph, on the other hand, is the main cook. He got sick of eating canned stuff one day and decided to make something. He’s actually very good at it, but only if he’s in the mood. This results in his brothers trying to coax him into making some of their favourite foods, but Raph rarely does because he simply can’t be bothered or is too busy busting heads. Sometimes he will wake up in the morning with all his brothers around his bed like “Donnie ate all the pop tarts but by complete chance we have all the ingredients for pancakes in the kitchen so seeing as we have no breakfast and you want to eat anyway do you think you can make pancakes hey are you listening hey hey hey pancakes please we’re hungry hey”

Chris and Matt were deep in their respective tasks — Chris at his laptop editing a video and Matt scribbling down ideas for their next project. The room was relatively quiet, save for the occasional sound of Chris muttering about frame rates and Matt tapping his pen against the table.

You, however, were not quiet.

“Chrisss,” you whined from the couch, sprawled dramatically across it. “I’m boooored.” you drug the letters out, groaning at the end of your sentence.

“Then find something to do,” Chris said, not even looking up from his laptop to look at you — too engrossed with whatever he was editing on there.

“I am doing something.” you quipped, sliding off the couch and making your way over to him. Chris let out a groan, eyes still glued to the screen. “Do you want to edit this video? No? Then shush.” he said, moving his fingers across the pad and keys.

You poked his arm. “What if I did, though? What if I’m, like, secretly amazing at editing?” you sassed, draping your arms around his shoulders.

Chris snickered, shaking his head. “You’re not,” he finally deadpanned.

Your bottom lip stuck out, pouting. But ultimately, it was short lived. “Matt,” you pivoted, turning your attention to the other brother. “Mattieeeeee.”

“What?” Matt didn’t even glance up from his notebook, his tone already resigned. “I’m bored.” you said, now whining to him — hoping maybe he’d take pity on your boredom. 

“Cool,” he muttered. “Go, uh… organize the pantry or something.” You blinked at him. “You’re seriously giving me chores to do?” you scoffed, pouting once more.

Matt finally looked up, an eyebrow raised. “Do you want something fun to do, or do you want to bother us while we work? Because if it’s the second one, I can find plenty of not-fun things.”

Your pout turned dramatic but, you wandered off toward the kitchen. After a few minutes of clinking and rustling, Chris muttered, “What did you just make her do?”

“Organize the snacks,” Matt replied without missing a beat.

“Oh, that’ll keep her busy for—” Chris was cut off by the sound of you shouting from the kitchen.

“Why do we have three open bags of chips?!”

Matt sighed and leaned back in his chair. “Five minutes. That’s all the peace we’re getting.” Sure enough, it wasn’t long before you were back, now draped over the back of Matt’s chair. “What are you writing?” you asked, peering over his shoulder.

He leaned forward to try and escape your looming presence. “Stuff for the channel.” he muttered, hand still writing against the paper. “What kind of stuff? Video ideas? Merch ideas? Secret stuff?”

Matt gave you a look. “Wanna brainstorm with me?” Your eyes widened and you nodded your head vigorously. “Yes!” You beamed, excited to finally be included in something.

“Okay,” he handed you his notebook and pen. “Go sit over there and write down all your ideas. Every single one, no matter how crazy.”

You practically skipped away, flopping onto the couch and scribbling furiously. Matt turned back to his work with a triumphant grin.

Chris smirked. “Smooth.”

“Hey, sometimes you gotta redirect the chaos,” Matt said.

For a while, the room was calm. Then you burst out laughing. “Okay, hear me out: what if we did a video where you guys try to live like squirrels for a day?”

Things I don’t get about the marauders fandom as someone who’s been obsessed with them for literal years

1. How we let so many characters be only children?? like I get that people don’t necessarily want to make OCs but HOW did it get to this? James, Marlene, Peter, Remus, Mary, Barty, Dorcas, Alice, Frank and so many others! Idk maybe it’s just where I’m from but look me in the eyes and tell me you know that many people who don’t have siblings ALSO the ratio is so off and barely any of them have only child energy. It’s just not right.

2. How sooo many of you aren’t multi shippers. Like what do you MEAN you can only see James with Regulus and Regulus with James?? What about bartylus? what about sunrose? what about draksun/sunkiller? what about moonwater? what about jily? what about prongstail? WHAT do you read?? Aren’t you bored??? WHAT DO YOU MEAN you only have ONE ship for each character???? As a multi shipper, I can be convinced of any ship with anything ranging from a real good fic or a pretty edit to an enthusiastic rant from a random person on TikTok and it just makes things interesting. Maybe my adhd brain just needs more ships to focus on or maybe some of you just lack flexibility ( or imagination), but we need to fix this cause there aren’t enough fics with the ships I like 😭😭

3. THE SHIP NAMES. I can’t be the only one who thinks some of these suck right? Like why are we saying jegulus when starchaser and sunseeker are RIGHT THERE?? Same with jily and flowerpot, and bartylus and starkiller. ALSO some names make me wonder if some of you just haven’t grasped the concept of ship names or if I just got it all wrong cause marylily and jegulily are just annoying, why are we keeping the L in Lily? The point is to merge the names together not stick them one beside the other, I just say marily and jeguily because it rolls off the tongue so much more easily

4. The Peter erasure. I just don’t get it, it’s so easy to include him in things, you don’t have to make him a main character, but just mention him every once in awhile. Sometimes I’m reading an important scene in a fic and everyone is mentioned EXCEPT for Peter! It’s so easy, just make him roll his eyes at his friends being idiots or something. And it’s not like you’ll get his personality wrong, ALL THESE CHARACTERS PERSONALITIES WERE MADE UP BY FANS but I understand that some people lack imagination so here’s some things about Peter I like to imagine: he’s a HUGE gossip, like my man sees and hears everything and he takes notes!! He likes to randomly turn into a rat and take a nap in one of the other marauders’ pocket, he does it so much that they had to tell the girls that they had a pet rat cause they were asking too many questions. He’s really perceptive and his friends are all oblivious so it leads to funny scenarios like:

Peter: I thought you guys had been together since third year?

Sirius: I’ve literally introduced you to people I was dating?!

Peter, shrugging: look mate I don’t question you lot anymore, you do whatever you want, I don’t care what you’re into, I just don’t wanna know about it

He also pulls people, like he’s really nice and will gossip to anyone who’s in his vicinity so he’s friends with basically everyone and he’s funny and pretty and he’s got charisma so he just charms everyone and when I say everyone, I mean everyone, even the slytherins have a soft spot for him (that’s how he gets accepted among the death eaters during the war actually). In pranks he’s the lookout so he often has to distract the teachers so he asks them random things and spits out half-made up facts about anything so he’s besties with most of the teachers which means he doesn’t get many detentions.

5. The Black brothers, more specifically the way the speak to each other in most fics, like they call each other “brother” so often and as someone who has a brother I’ve never called him that. Is it an anglophone thing? Like do people who speak English at home all do that or are fic writers only children?? (That would explain my first point actually) Or is it more a rich people thin?? Cause I know it’s not a francophone thing that’s for sure (also special mention to people who don’t know anything about French writing Sirius and Regulus as French speakers, I can tell you don’t know what you’re writing about but I eat it up everytime anyway)

6. This is actually just about ao3 but I WANNA BE ABLE TO LEAVE MORE KUDOS!!! I just loooooove fics but I can’t leave kudos at every single chapter and I’m bad at writing comments so I can’t show the author how much I love their work, I hate itttt 😭

7. Why there aren’t more fics about the Black family, and not just Sirius and Regulus, but Andromeda, Bellatrix and Narcissa as well like that would be so interesting and maybe like a deep dive into the Black family ideals and all that (if you have fic recs I’m all ears!!)

8. How jegulily is a pretty popular ship (which I LOVE) yet SO FEW people ship Regulus and Lily outside of it! They are a power couple and I love them and they don’t need James to work!!!

9. Why there isn’t more background Minnie x Poppy cause they are my mothers and I wanna see them moooooreeee
