Whenever he feels like the two of you haven't spent enough time together due to his work, he invites you into his office to hang out. He enjoys hearing you talk excitedly about your passions while he does paperwork.

He can't say he has too much of an interest in peacocks, but he loves hearing you talk about the things you love, so he'll let you talk until you've had your fill.

"So peacocks apparently peacocks feathers are covered in tiny crystal-like structures that reflect different wavelengths of light depending on how they're spaced."

"Also, since only male peacocks have the large train of feathers, do you think it played a role in them being your familiars? Since you're the avatar of pride and all of that."

"That's quite the theory you've got there, but I'm afraid I don't know how true it actually is."

His ego does grow quite a bit every time you go into one or your rants since he can tell you're talking so much about peacock cause they are his familiars.

He will probably buy you something peacock inspired to give you during one of your info-dumps.

God forbid you start gushing about his familiars in front of Diavolo. The prince will see it as a way to talk even more about Lucifer, and the former isn't sure how much he can deal with that.

Mammon

He has a pretty good base knowledge about crows. Out of all of his brothers, he probably works with his familiars the most. It's canon that he literally uses them to spy on people and gather information.

Still, there are a lot of things he might not know. And even if he knew, he would die before telling you to stop talking.

"Your crows are so cute, did you know that they are considered some of the world's smartest birds?"

"Of course they are! They're the Great Mammon's familiars after all"

"They are also known to gossip with their peers and hold grudges"

"I am well aware of that fact, more often than not they tell me the latest gossip in Devildom"

He would let you hang out with his crows in order to learn more about them.

I also have the headcanon that he can talk with them, so he would literally be a translator for you and the crows

Is pretty smug about the fact that you are so interested in his familiars, even so when you interact with them. He might even give you some accessories made out of his familiars' feathers(of course, feathers that have fallen on their own)

He would honestly be really touched by your eagerness to learn and tell him about snakes since he is pretty much one. He sees it as you being interested in him on a whole new level and gets really excited when you info-dump about them.

He still touched about you wanting to learn more about his familiars so he is always willing to answear any and all of your questions. He might even take you to see some of them.

"Is it true that unicorns can use magic with their horn?"

"Saying they can cast magic is far stretched. They have some abilities specific to their kind that can be used with or without the horn."

Cats on the other hand? Doesn't matter if he already know whatever fact you want to tell him, he is always more than happy to discuss about them.

Hell, he might be the one info-dumping about cats before you get the chance to do so.

"Did you know that cats can have up to 100 different vocalizations? Dogs only have like 10"

"They are also believed to be the only mammal who doesn't taste sweetness, which I find unfortunate. Still, they truly are amazing creatures"

More often than not Solomon is dragged in the conversations too due to the 'Cat' group chat that three of you have. Not like he minds, he loves cats too.

He lets you info-dump about scorpions while he does your hair/nails/helps you with you skin care.

"Is you info-dumping about my familiars your way of telling me that you love me~"

Your self care sessions are also info-dump sessions, so you kill two birds with one stone.

"Did you know that scorpions are capable of dissolving their pray from the inside out. They also glow under ultraviolet light??"

Since you've started to info-dump about his familiars to him, his outfits/nails/accessories have started to have a scorpion motif to them quite often

He also tells you one of the facts you've told him before while he shows off his scorpion inspired accesories. It's his way of showing that he listens to your rants.

"Scorpions can do that, can't they? Remember when you told me this last night?"

He doesn't really know a lot about his familiars but he has an odd fondness about them. He can't really bring himself to kill them, tho flies tend to leave him alone anyway.

He thinks is really sweet that you know so much about those little guys, so he is always happy to sit and listen to you.

If you feel like info-dumping about flies, feel free to do it whenever you like. He is raiding the fridge? You can help him carry some of the food while you tell him more about his familiars. He is working out? He can hear loud and clear. He might not be the most responsive during some of those moments but he is always listening to you.

He is aware that out of all of his brothers, his familiar is not the cutest or the coolest one, so when you start talking about it, he can't help but feel really loved.

"Beel, did you know that flies can taste food using their feet?"

"It would be pretty usefull to know how food would taste just by touching, not like I would care if the food would taste bad, I would still eat it"

"Also, due to their eyes being compound they can also see behind their back. They actually have a 360° field of view"

While he thinks cows look comfy enough to take a nap, he does not care about them. But he care about you, so he is more than willing to cuddle up with you while you info-dump.

"Cows are actually pretty nice, they can spend about 10 hours a day lying down and they can also sleep while standing...are you even listening to me...?"

Despite looking like he is one second from falling asleep or even downright sleeping, he actually listens to you. He can pay attention to things even in his sleep, how do you think he has really high grades at RAD? so he is listening to all of the cow facts you're telling him.

Anytime you doubt that he has been listening, he will tell you a fact that you've told him in the past to show that he was in fact listening.

"Cows can sleep while standing, right? You're the one who told me, so you should know. Now get closer, I want to use your lap as a pillow."

It's an expansion on the very beginning of Lucanis recruitment mission where you first go to Treviso but with more Crow Rook interactions

Whatever the reasoning for his lapse in judgement, it led to Rook bleeding out in Viago’s arms while she clutched onto the leather of his jacket. She could still feel the way her blood gurgled in her throat as she drowned. Now she wanted nothing more than the comfort of gripping onto his jacket as he muttered out with annoyance, “Well, that was rather careless of you.”

The two of them decided that she was at youngest fourteen and at oldest sixteen when her throat was stitched together and dressed.

Her former master ordered Rook to stand in front of him as a shield when Viago came for his contract. Without hesitation, she had complied. When the man realized that was not going to stop his soon to be assassin, he slit her throat in a bid for distraction.

It didn't work.

That first night in Antiva, other Houses had swarmed around her like vultures, appraising her as one would a lamb for slaughter. Giuli Arainai, the Eighth Talon, had grabbed the bottom of her chin with such force she thought her jaw would crack. Viago moved from his place after one stern look to their previous Guild Master before he draped his coat over her bare shoulders, drawing her close to his side.

“I take responsibility for her,” he had said with unwavering eye contact to his predecessor, “She will not be a disgrace to our House.”

Viago was impulsive when he was younger. It was the same kind that he reprimanded her for now. But, had he not moved then, she would have ended up in a warehouse pitted against other slaves fighting for scraps of food only to be tortured by crueler Crows.

“Rook?” Neve led the charge of the others looking at her skeptically, “Are you ready to go?”

Hello there ! Do you have any headcanon about Lady Maria ? Like maybe her relationship with other characters than Gherman and Adeline ?

Thank you for an ask! I've posted some headcanons about her past ( x )and her habits and alike ( x ) but it was a considerable time ago! Also I have a delayed ask from my friend @heraldofcrow regarding Maria's family because the sheer amount of people I needed to cover and contexts I needed to explain crashed me shdfhsd (I will post it when I am ready Crow </3 )

I will cover more or less solid ideas here though because some headcanons I am still just bouncing around!

Maria and other Old Hunters

Like it says here, she and Henryk were the ones helping Byrgenwerth, descending from the families with close ties to ancient cultures and having a lot of knowledge under their belts (as well as personal interest)! Both of them are not very talkative outside of "important" stuff. However, every time they do speak with each other it is very agreeable, fulfilling and positive experience! They share a lot in common and understand each other's struggles and fears effortlessly!

Djura was a person she respected a lot, especially for being the fellow denier of magic using, unlike the rest of Old Hunters that enjoyed arcane weapons, Moon-granted powers, bells, etc etc. That's why Powder Kegs were "heretical"! They both only relied on their skills, only he also was a great engineer! She considered straight up joining Oto Workshop (remains of which later became Powder Kegs) but did not like what their fixation on fire was unfortunately bringing in her. She has the secret pyromancy power, you know x)

^ The fact that concept art features a Charred Hunter similar to Djura with a rapier and one of Powder Kegs weapons imitates a Cainhurst weapon makes me consider the idea that Maria and Djura knew each other even before the Hunters stuff! I will examine this idea later, but them being old friends is an appealing idea! In either case, for her Djura was like that one "cool mutual" who instantly gives you self-esteem boost if they like your post! xD Djura was yet to undergo his character arc at the point Maria's resolve as a hunter cracked after Fishing Hamlet though, so his (former) feverish hatred to the beasts made her trust him less. She already got burnt when Gehrman somewhat harshly didn't understand her faltering and didn't want to risk getting judgement from Djura, the second person she admired, too.

Gratia is a cousin that Maria never learned of, as Gratia was discarded since birth (born same kind of Pthumerian-Human hubrid as Snatchers)! It was rather lucky to still meet within Old Hunters as adults. Maria felt quite comfortable with her, coincidentally getting sense of 'older sister' figure from her that she missed after parting with Annalise! Even though Gratia and Annalise are nothing alike of course x) But a much more stronger, more bold and confident, and more tall woman is something that allowed Maria to connect with her softer side, especially when Gratia would straight up pick her up in a (too tight) embrace when she congratulated her with something, or expressed vocal wish to "protect" her!

Matias (Blood Minister from intro cutscene) used to double as a bar man at the times when alcohol was still relevant in Yharnam, so she interacted with him outside of the hunt enough! She needed a glass sometimes, okay? xD He is a curious person though and prefers to get under facades and see what people are really made of, so he abused being sober while she was drunk to ask her about her feelings on various topics and people, or pry on her secrets. She was so stoic and reclusive, he just wanted to know who was the person under the Hunter role! Very crooked of him, but at least he didn't use drunk secrets of others for evil, he is Just Like This lol. He eventually felt guilty for being so shady though. As one of the first Old Hunters who started to experience the potential drawbacks of the hunt and blood (losing legs capacity, blindness, having to amputate fingers etc), he also was one the first to get in a wheelchair. Maria was so nice and helpful to him despite him becoming "useless", he should have been nice too, this old nosy bastard.

Maria and the Healing Church

Laurence... Alright, heeeere we fucking go again with my beloved image that is a pillar for many of my headcanons:

Maria and Laurence are not blood-related (at least as far as great-grand parents go, I didn't develop centuries of family tree!), but saw each other since younger age! They were not close though, as Laurence travelled and studied abroad in his kid and teen years! Whenever he visited, it was also not more than simple exchange of news at the dinner in a group of people. Maria and her squad (Annalise, Crow and King) knew him as arrogant asshole with inflated ego, but he returned in Maria's life in Byrgenwerth era, as admittedly more charismatic and pleasant person than before.

They managed to patch up years of awkwardness and distance and became friends, especially since he got along with Gehrman quite well! ...but then he decided that HE was special, and HE could tame the holy blood when Loran and Pthumeru Ihyll failed 🙄 Maria was more by the side of Caryll, Rom and Willem on the big bad academical infighting! She argued with Laurence a lot. When he convinced Adeline that letting him surgically alter her body to produce holy blood was a good idea, Maria straight up could not handle it maturely. It is a long one to go into but Laurence already tugged some unexplainable sense of fear and hesitation in Maria. She felt like his influence somehow was everywhere (not she alone, actually) and she never could stand up against him properly, but "losing" Adeline was the very peak of the sense of helplessness. She wished she reacted more maturely and her weakness only proven Adeline that Laurence was more reasonable trustworthy (owch.....), but in either case, since then a HELL of passive aggression and coldness followed between Laurence and Maria.

....and then, they somewhat broke the ice in Research Hall arc, after Maria abandoned the hunt and could at least entrust in evolution through Eyes and Stars. They both figured they took bad turns in life and there was no point in lamenting the past, they still needed to save what could be saved. They finally had pleasant, albeit very bitter-sweet interactions after years of mutual vitriol. However, I am considering a very dark idea of Laurence seeing that Maria was bordering suic1dal moods and not only letting it happen, but even "encouraging" it in secret, as he wanted her out of the way before commanding Cainhurst massacre. No, he knew that he had her will broken and she would just let him do it, he was not scared. But he... didn't want it. He figured it was a better way to go for her as someone who still believed she could atone for her sins, rather than living to reach complete state of helplessness. He "allowed" her one last "choice" in her life.

Fucked up concept, fucked up concept, I know.

With Brador relationship was a bit strained, but they were more of friends than Maria and Laurence. At least, she was not feeling so inexplicably cornered by him with all her might as a warrior, nor Brador was trying to scare her into being hush. He believed she was smart enough to not get herself or her friends into more trouble, albeit always felt bad for her kind, honorable nature. He knew he was an opposite of her, completely drenched and even reveling in disgraceful crimes he was doing to help "smarter people" advance. But, Maria pleaded with Brador to get a word out from her to Laurence, to pay attention at the weird actions of Doctor Micolash at the Research Hall and why patients kept suffering and diving into 'Sea', and Brador listened to her. It is quite a confession from Brador to go against Laurence for someone, and Maria knows this. They'd have very deep friendship under better circumstances, I think.

Vasylissa (White Church Hunter) is another character Maria saw often! Technically, Maria replaced her as an overseer and caretaker of Research Hall in the end. Even before that, Maria appreciated this person and was always relieved to find her in Grand Cathedral praying instead of Laurence. Vasylissa at least remembered to "fear the blood" much better than everyone else in the Healing Church. Very arcane-leaning, very should-have-stayed-in-Byrgenwerth person that helped Maria to feel less alone. They exchanged everything they knew as well as had many heart-to-hearts, and Vasylissa considered themselves to be good friends.. She was one of the people who cried and blamed herself when Maria was gone. I also like to play with an idea that Maria would like to approach her romantically, but noticed someone else had eyes on her - that Black Church female Hunter who guards her! So she decided to step back.

Ludwig was also a person with whom Laurence and Healing Church stuff didn't sour the things with! Heck, the guy loved what Laurence represented more than himself, and mostly was just fixated on the hunt (and his 'Guidance', but that was a secret!)! They are both knightly and full of honour, naive and kind but ruthless in battle! I even wrote a post of headcanons of them as a pairing once ( x ), but everything said in that post still applies minus the dating bit :') They were good friends that vented and could comfort each other, they disagreed on the same Healing Church's antics, they had friendly sparrings, they kept each other in mind upon separation and stocked up things to share with each other when they'd meet next..

I think when Maria went from 'magic bad humanity good' to 'maybe there IS some hope for humanity in pursuit for Stars and Moon 🤔', Ludwig showed Holy Moonlight to her. He was a little reluctant and jealous considering it, but could not see Maria so doubtful and lost. If sharing something so intimate could've helped her to finally make sense of her conflicts, then so be it. Only.. it made things worse, because Maria saw that the violence and murder was in the plans of even the Great One that was advertised by Laurence and the others as the way to help humanity!

Maria and Cainhurst

This is the part where I unfortunately have to restrain myself, because there is so much to unpack that, like I said, I still have a separate ask to work on this!

But, Maria had sort of a friend group since childhood with Annalise (half-sister from her cheating father), Eidinghardt (Bloody Crow of Cainhurst) and Elias (King)! Her relationship with Crow were the closest of the group, as the two were like siblings! They were fighting a lot but not in a toxic way, more like the typical siblings banters! Maria additionally pinched Crow's cheek or invited him for a nice fist fight when they were kids and Crow constantly made Elias cry, or was rude towards Annalise! He was an asshole, and she was an anti-bully ranger x) Yet, whenever it subdued, they were playing together a lot and getting into trouble together. Crow was very jealous when Maria decided to leave Cainhurst, like... I would not surprised of the 'straight up clinged to her leg and dragged after her across the floor' situation fdshhfd For people that fought a lot he felt only she truly understood him, and he never quite recovered from realisation that Maria might not really felt the same, even if she did love him too.

Elias was very gentle person when he was growing up, and could only really turn to Maria to hide from judgement for "shaming" his noble family. She was there for him during both of his most hardcore conflicts with Annalise (who was and is extremely hard to earn forgiveness from), and believed in him when he decided to become a warrior too. Annalise, like I said, Maria found a comfort in, lacking a mother figure and instead seeking a woman to turn to in older sisters figures. But also, Annalise gave her chills sometimes! She never dared to lie to her or break a promise to her- and she did see what happens on example of Elias. At the same time, Annalise was so reliable, someone Maria could share her problem with and just know that Annalise will help...

What are the odds that Unika is operating solely on her own or that her agenda isn't being used to facilitate someone else's objective? I find it hard to believe that she's going to be the sole antagonist for Dual Rulers. And, IIRC, there are some rogue factions of the PWAB who are against Gear/Human cohabitation. Given the weaponry at her disposal, is it possible that she has a patron?

Only a small handful of individuals are capable of fighting Gears on their own, and most aren't very Human to begin with. Those that are have rare exceptional talents or are equipped to the extreme in order to fight Gears (never mind Humanoid Gear types).

The ones who are equipped are usually Bounty Hunters or have an organization backing them (either in secret or in public).

And you are right to suspect rogue former elements of the P.W.A.B., but I also suspect several nations (Australia included) aren't particularly agreeable to Gears interacting with Humans, either.

I would not at all be surprised if Unika had a backer of some kind, given the equipment she uses to fight Sin. Especially given the Weapon's ID, it wouldn't be hard to trace her equipment, either.

Of course, it's also possible she stole equipment for personal use, but that's also a rarity these days, since most authority have the technology to easily trace it.

As for whom would stand to gain from defacing the rights of Gears, most likely Weapons Dealers and Manufacturers (since they still consider Gears to BE weapons and don't want them to be treated in any other way for their own profits).

There's also a few extremists like Crow Kuruwaba who plan to use Gears to further their arsenal of Research and Development by using them in experiments and such... but such individuals aren't all that common these days.

Regardless, Unika seems like the type to have a personal reason for doing what she's doing, so she wouldn't be dealing with fishy types unless she had no other means.

Still, we won't know for sure until we find out later...

Presenting, the new DUST designs!

Miles Clark (he/him) is a super genius environmental scientist who will save the world! ... Except, that's what Hannah told him. Several decades of cryostasis (to avoid the apocalypse) messed with his mind, and he can't remember anything of his past. Miles is very intelligent, enjoys arguments, and is curious to his own detriment. He will do anything to get what he wants. At first his personality always either clashes or completely melts together with other people, until he mellows out a bit. Although Hannah doesn’t do this on purpose, she makes Miles feel like his loss of memory is a tragedy, and he internalizes this as if it were his fault. He frantically searches for any clue of his past, and any way to rebuild the world.

Hannah Mayfield (she/her) is Miles' best friend from when she first woke up. Contrary to Miles, cryostasis didn't affect her much, and she remembers him as a great scientist. Hannah is sweet and caring and always tries to find the middle ground. She gets nervous when people are disagreeing. Hannah is scared of losing her past, and often has bouts of nostalgia. As such, she is a bit obsessed with returning to how it was, and frequently pressures Miles to at least remember something. When they stray from the path to the old world she frequently gets more and more stressed, but as her bonds to the others grow, especially the one with Sengi, she learns to let go a little.

When Ruuto Valerian (he/they) isn’t dreaming, they're daydreaming. Sengi and Miles frequently call them the laziest person on earth, and with the amount of surviving people, that may well be true. According to him he’s conserving his physical energy, whatever that may mean. He is relaxed in mind-to-mind connections, but physical contact easily flusters them. Although the others frequently joke about him not contributing, he does keep the group relaxed at times when it should, and they can randomly have the most brilliant ideas. Ruuto is spiritual, and a bit superstitious at times. He is very observant of people and their emotions when he’s on the outside of a conversation but is very oblivious in actual interactions.

Scarecrow (she/they) is a curious girl, who woke up a few months prior to Miles and Hannah but lives in the wilderness of the apocalypse as if she’s been living it her whole life. Her crow Dexter never leaves her side, and according to her, she can talk to not only him, but all animals. Scarecrow has a bad case of FOMO and as such they will impulsively jump into anything they deem even slightly interesting. The others can frequently get annoyed or even angry with Scarecrow due to her offensive jokes, and she claims she has “no filter”. While she vehemently denies any knowledge of the former world, she makes it obvious that her memories weren’t lost due to her constant references she makes to the old world. For some reason they try to ignore it, as if it never existed.

Sengi (she/her) is a lone wolf, but like all wolves, she would much rather be part of a pack. She grew up in the post-apocalyptic world and as such is well adjusted to its perils. From a young age she was separated from her parents and grandparents. When she met the others, she was initially hesitant to make connections. Although Sengi is big and muscular she’s also shy, a bit awkward, and when she tries to quip she can make the corniest jokes.

Lantern (he/him) is the nickname Ruuto has given to wandering robot EP-844 with seemingly no purpose. Having wandered for years means that he’s worn down and almost skeletal in structure. He never puts down the lantern he carries everywhere. At some point, Lantern made stalking Miles and the others his objective, but no-one is sure why.

NOA (they/them) is an artificial intelligence, the bellhop and manager of the ARC, the place where humans wake up after the world has ended! NOA is very enthusiastic and will do anything to make humans happy. For now.

To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. A black mark of Social History is put under the microscope.

Under the education system, you were taught that Haper Lee’s novel was a product of its time as well as the closest we would ever get to understanding the culture of the segregated south.

Reading this classic a few years on, Lee’s novel can no longer be considered as just another insight into one of many undignified moments of social history. Written in the first person, Lee explores one of the quintessential assets of 1930s America; the ‘close-knit’ family.

From the family you’re born into, to the people in your hometown, it can be seen that the main characters are conflicted by their social and human morality. This is evident in the youngest character of the novel, Jean Louise (Scout), when she observed that she ‘was born good, but had grown progressively worse every year.’ Plausibly, her impressionable mind is referring to the negative effects of growing up. Focusing on the quote specifically, the placement of the comma presents Scout’s view as a reflection life itself; the ability to be good is short lived, whereas the bad parts of life can be sufferable longer. The ideas associated with the Bildungsroman novel also extends to the children’s thoughts of the adults of Maycomb, Alabama (the location of the novel). Lee presents them as figures of authority over children like Scout and Jem (the former’s older brother). Wether they are a dictatorial or democratic, the reader will have to see as the novel progresses. As we are only offered hints until court is in session. This view on character hierarchy is convincingly spoken of by Jem when he stated directly to Scout that “You can’t run three hundred miles off without your mother knowin’”. The irony of this coming from Jem is that the term ‘Big Brother’ is referring to the government propaganda of the time. Something that was promoting political control and an almost dystopian outlook on America society during the early 20th century.

From Jim Crow’s Laws to the great migration to California, shifts in the American economy were prioritised over emotional happiness and harmony.

The children’s perspectives are contrasted with the steadfastness of the father, Atticus Finch. His interaction with Jem and Scout are plausibly as direct and unwavering as any parent we, as readers, will ever encounter. To order Scout to, ‘hold your head high and … don’t let them get your goat’ is to urge her to stick to her moral beliefs, as Atticus’ daughter, rather than the conflicting views of Maycomb society.

The influence of Atticus is later confirmed in Scout stating that ‘(he) told (her) to delete the adjectives and just have the facts’. Advice coming from Atticus does suggest the powerful connection he has with Scout. Something that was very profound with Lee and her father who was also a lawyer in Alabama. A particular case her father took, which parallels the novel’s, was serving as a defence counsel for two African Americans who were accused of murdering a white storekeeper. In terms of Atticus, his role as the local lawyer serves as the glint of hope in the backwards world of the Deep South.

To highlight his own moral views on society, Atticus states to the jury that he’s ‘no idealist to believe firmly in the integrity of our… jury system—that is no ideal to (him), it is a living, working reality.’ Atticus harshly contrasts the theory of law with its practice.To increase the power of the latter, Lee uses punctuation, at the last minute, to emphasise ‘living (and) working reality’. This is further enforced by the use of a em dash to lengthen Atticus’ focus idealism. To join up ‘jury system (with) that is no ideal’, plausibly makes idealism seem tedious and overbearing. The toil between the ideal and reality, seen by the sentence structure, does suggests conflict between law and society’s emotions.

This contrast can also be linked to the political situation at the time the novel was set as well as when it was published. In 1930, the theory and ideal world propaganda was promoting was disguising the social effects suffered from the Depression and Dust Bowl. Whereas in 1960, the advertisements of the ‘white’ family home and ‘the Help’ system was contrasts with the Civil Rights movement that slowly grew to change everything.

Atticus’ use of contrasts is further explored by Dolphus Raymond. Someone who gets ostracised by Maycomb for marrying a black woman, Raymond is a courtroom viewer that the Scout and Jem come to know. To an extent, he also sees society as being conflicted between human reality and social ideals;

“Cry about the simple hell people give other people—without even thinking. Cry about the hell white people give colored folks, without even stopping to think that they’re people, too.”

The religious associations with ‘cry’ and ‘hell’ does plausibly allude to the reception of court case verdict later on in the novel. However, to contrast it with the colour ‘white’ associates the treatment of coloured ‘folk’ with purity and innocence. With manipulation being very prevalent here, Lee could be mirroring the novel’s character hierarchy with American society’s.

Overall, before I ramble on any further, it can be said that Lee’s idea of ‘close-knit family’ very broad. By including arguments surrounding the use of law and power during this time, Lee makes us realise how hard it is to stick with OUR (practical) logic over theoretical fanaticism. Unlike my previous review, you can give this novel the ‘Modern Classic’ label. A narrative that is relevant across all decades, Harper’s toil between ‘family’ values and human harmony, makes us question the lack of unity in today’s world. Separate political structures, ways to educate people and religious beliefs can make a person question where they belong regardless of birth.

Reflecting upon his time as a mortal invokes the sensation that he is trying to recall the memories of someone other than himself, like he is merely an observer in someone else’s life.  Because, truth be told, Cedric was nothing before Pluto came across him.  The Original shared his gift with him, turning him into a vampire just before the chilling embrace of the grave became too comfortable. Cedric felt like a god amongst men.  Never in his life had he felt this powerful, unable to be harmed by mortal hands. His sire only fed into his hedonistic nature, never holding him back from what they truly were.  Humans were nothing but cattle to them and they wanted to bleed the fucking world dry. 

  The vampire had drank from many species, but none would ever compare to the blood of a witch. The supple caress of the magic flowing through the enhanced ichor became something that he began to crave on a visceral level.  He had grown careless, fueled by his addiction to enchanted blood. He moved from town to town, slaughtering whole covens to feed his insatiable hunger.  A murder of crows, an omen of death. Cedric would drink until he made himself sick, then would watch his remaining victims bleed out in the dirt through glazed over eyes as he retched up their beloved’s life sustaining fluid only to feed again.  Word spread fast through the network of covens woven across central Europe, that they needed to destroy this monster before he decimated their population. They should have killed him for all the lives he had stolen in his bout of gluttonous stupor. But instead they chose a punishment that would turn out to be far more cruel. He would be imprisoned, to serve as an example to any vampire that yearned to prey upon witches.

  Time passed on. And on. And on. Days turned to weeks, weeks to years, centuries even. The isolation drove him to madness, time chipping away at his mask to fully unveil the monster hiding underneath. The world continued to turn as he festered and decayed, collared and forgotten inside a coven's basement. A damp cellar with a frigid stone floor, no windows to see the stars. Generations lived and died in the household above his head. Eventually the numbers of the coven who had sealed him away all those years ago were finally beginning to dwindle.  But instead of releasing Cedric, he was handed over to a much larger coven in Rome. His new captors were not outwardly cruel, once the initial curiosity grew stale they became indifferent. They would collect his blood for rituals periodically, his only interactions for centuries invoking only humiliation and pain. Yet another forgotten relic rotting away in the cellar, dusted off whenever he was needed and discarded again soon after. He was only ever given just enough blood to prevent him from petrifying completely. His captors wanted to keep him alive but weak, the animal blood that was offered to him was never enough to quench his thirst. Cedric decayed to a mere husk of his former self, hair and fangs falling out from malnutrition. An apex predator weakened and humbled beyond recognition. 

  One thousand years in isolation changes a man. What little already remained of his humanity was stripped away. The coven freed a starving animal that day, one whose mind was warped and twisted from years of neglect. He should be grateful that an Ivy witch took pity on him to finally release him from his prison, but he only feels spite.  A spell was cast upon him that prevents him from harming witches, his plans of revenge that had been consuming his mind for centuries thwarted in one fell swoop.  A spell far more powerful and ancient than himself, a protective shield encompassing every witch.  Cedric chose to flee Rome, stretching his wings for the first time in one thousand years as the swarm of crows he materialized into took flight. He only returned to the city in late September 2023, stumbling his way through modern society with about as much tact as one would expect from a being imprisoned for a millennium. And if he ever finds a way to break the curse that has him bound, all witches will have hell to pay.

do you have any headcanons for micolash? not much is stated about him, but i like to think that the fucked up animals in the nightmare are indeed his creations/pets from the waking world, essentially grafting animal parts together with the old blood

Hello anon!

I’ll preface this by saying that I’m not as well versed in the more intricate pieces of lore etc. so this will primarily be my own headcanons but I’m more than happy to give a few.

I absolutely believe that the dogs with the crow heads/crows with dog heads aren’t just a creation of the nightmare itself but something that Micolash (or his fellow scholars) actively created in the ‘waking world’. I’ll use that to describe to the time in the past pre-dream/nightmare and prior to the game, in this case when the School of Mensis were prolific and active. It’s very clear that Mensis are more than willing to mutilate and perform unethical experiments, and I feel like they’re more than capable of grafting animals together.

However, I headcanon that it was Micolash’s, pardon the pun, pet project. The crows and dogs are definitely affected by the blood (just look at the bloody size of those birds) so he’d probably be curious about what he could make with them. I can’t really think of any real scientific drive that he would have to do it other than some morbid curiosity or perhaps research into animal physiology and its interaction with the old blood. Maybe he just wanted some friends! Most people get a cat or a goldfish, Micolash gets a half-dog/half-crow abomination of his own making. There’s a few meaty werewolves in Yahar’gul which I don’t think were ‘made’ (more imagery than anything) but I guess you could see them as hinting at animal experimentation too.

Outside of that topic, I do have a few headcanons.

• Micolash did indeed study at Byrgenwerth but he wasn’t as closely associated with Laurence as he would’ve liked to have been. I think that he was always a bit of an eccentric, even amongst the scholars of Byrgenwerth. He was an interesting person with plenty of ideas and asked the right questions, but not the sort that you would trust wholeheartedly. He was involved in the research to a point, and I think that would also have spurred on his intention to leave Byrgenwerth for Mensis. He had enough knowledge from there to continue to research but enough freedom in Mensis to perform whatever he wanted without being shackled down by Byrgenwerth’s rules or research. Definitely a difficult person to work with, that’s for sure. I wouldn’t like to be his lab partner!

• I like to think that he came from a family of ample wealth, enough for him to receive an education fitting of an applicant to the college of Byrgenwerth but not grossly rich. In fact, I feel like he was probably one of the less well off students at the college. I’ll go into detail about this at some point but I do think that Byrgenwerth was like colleges back in the day where only the wealthy were permitted to attend.

• At Mensis, he truly came into his own. He had fellow scholars with ideals identical to his own and individuals to defend them. He also finally had enough resources and reach to organise the grotesque events in Yahar’gul and finally achieve his goals (which he basically did).

• On a more light hearted note, I think that his favourite place in Byrgenwerth was the lake and he often enjoyed leaning on the stone walls, gazing out at the glassy surface to collect his thoughts or finish any work. That’s the only part he misses about his former college- other than that it was just a means to an end, and a hinderance on the latter end of his stay. The library was great too but he had a better one at Mensis any way.

I want the opening scene, with the Angel-who-is-not-Crowley creating the nebula, to be a red herring somehow. I want it to be something different than what we've seen, and here's why:

It's out of balance.

From the very beginning (meaning, in this case, the original book), Aziraphale and Crowley have been perfect mirror opposites. Angel and demon, light and dark, comfortably slow and flashily fast. The one fretting about following rules, the other crowing about breaking them.

That's what they like about each other. Each of them completes the other; they are fascinated and irritated and have centuries-long running arguments and conversations (and eventually the Arrangement) and it all keeps itself in a lovely sort of equilibrium.

But in the opening sequence, it kind of seems like Angel Crowley is higher-ranking or more important than Aziraphale. He treats Aziraphale as a sort of handy assistant, and doesn't even introduce himself (although I suppose that might be because he's distracted by how excited he is to be finally ready to spin everything up and turn it on and make it go).

Aziraphale, for his part, seems quite ready to accept the role of insignificant underling, and offers praise and encouragement in a way that makes me think he's never gotten any himself, and has been wishing he would.

This kind of power imbalance seems VERY WRONG to me. No matter how much Aziraphale was charmed and impressed by this particular angel, surely he must by now be aware that he would never have sustained a six-thousand-year friendship with someone he had a hero-worshipping crush on. They have to meet as equals, or their relationship eventually turns into something more like the one he has with the Archangels.

There's also the way it would undermine the whole idea of Crowley as a demon with an imagination. In season one, he did seem a little impressively powerful. He can stop time! He can keep his Bentley going, even though it's on fire! He can tell when nobody is looking!

I would have said that it was very fundamental to his character that he learned about imagination from humans. That his flash and fast-talking and innate skill were enhanced and put to good use by all that he had learned from interacting with generations of lovely clever humans.

If, instead, Crowley is powerful because he's really a memory-wiped former Archangel or something, it's just so lame. Maybe not quite midichlorian-level lame, but wow, what a let-down.

And it means he's still and forever out of balance with Aziraphale. If they both started out as mid-level nobodies, and then learned from their time on Earth, it maintains that necessary symmetry. Aziraphale learns compassion, and enjoyment of earthly things, while Crowley learns about all the myriad ways to impress and influence people.

At the very least, I really, really wish that Crowley had spun the handle and said the first instructions, and then Aziraphale had been the one to chime in with "Let there be light!"

not that it's a BAD thing. he wants to make people happy, and it makes him happy in turn when theyre cheering for him! thats fine! A Review: Sugar Apple Fairy Tale Vol. 1

Plot

Anne Halford is a sweet, caring fifteen-year-old with one goal: To win the Royal Candy Fair so she can become a Silver Sugar Master. If she does that, her mom’s soul (who’s recently died) will surely move on peacefully. There’s just one problem, in order to make it to the Royal Candy Fair she’ll have to travel the bloody highway filled with bandits, murderous crows, and wolves. 

She decides to get a warrior fairy, only he’s too pretty and has a horrible haughty attitude with a trash mouth to boot. Can she keep him in line long enough to make it to the Royal Candy Fair? 

Character Development

Ann Halford is a very sweet protagonist. She’s nice and treats everyone equally because she believes fairies and humans can be friends. She’s got talent as a silver sugar confectionist. She’s not very good at being assertive. 

Challe Fenn Challe is the beautiful warrior fairy who’s haughty and likes to insult humans. He calls Anne scarecrow. He seems to also be a bit melancholy, reminiscing about a human he knew before as he interacts more with Anne on their journey. 

Mithril Lid Pod is a small water fairy Anne saves from being killed by his previous master. He sneaks onto Anne’s wagon to repay her for saving him. He’s kinda loud and obnoxious but willing to prove himself. 

Jonas is a silver sugar confectionist related to one of the big workshop owners. He’s cheerful and is always trying to convince Anne that she’d be better off just marrying him. 

World-building

The kingdom of Highland used to be the kingdom of the fairies until humans rose up against them. Humans now rule. Fairies are treated as slaves by taking one of their wings you can control a fairy. There’s even fairy marketplaces where they can be sold as warriors (rare typing), pets (also rare and beautiful) or laborers (most of them). Fairies were the first beings to create silver sugar and humans adopted it. It’s said if you make a silver sugar confection right it can bring good luck and fortune to those that eat it. 

We find out that fairies are born from magic essence being collected in a single spot. This happens when a living being stares at the spot. They can’t taste food and absorb it. The only thing they can taste is silver sugar. 

Themes

Follow your dreams. 

This is a pretty easy theme to spot in this manga. No matter what happens throughout it, Anne insists on going to the Royal Candy Fair and becoming a Silver Sugar Master. When Jonas proposes, she refuses. When her confection is said to not have any soul to it. She buckles down on her dream. She won’t let anything stop her. 

Observations & Predictions

I think Jonas will do anything to stop Anne from trying to fulfill her goal. If she doesn’t fulfill it she’ll probably give up. If she gives up then she’d choose him. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was the one that made her silver sugar disappear at the end of this volume.

Anne, if she continues to interact with Challe after the Royal Candy Fair, will become more assertive. With her determination, I’m sure she’ll create candy pieces that will awe others. Anne is still grieving her mother so I hope she can put soul into her creations rather than just copying her mother’s style. 

I can see Challe developing a relationship with Anne, though what kind remains to be seen. Right now he sees a lot of Liz (former human) in Anne. This makes connecting with her easier and I’m interested to see if this develops into something further. There are hints of this in the first volume when she thinks of Challe when Jonas, yet again, tells her to just marry him. 

This is a sweet coming-of-age type story. We root for Anne and hope her dream comes true. I would recommend this for anyone who wants a sweet tasting story.

Family operated & owned and first established at our Crows Nest Centre in 1972 we have had the pleasure of teaching & educating children throughout their many milestones and have loved every moment of it, we really would not have it any-other way.
