Western Rock Sengi (Elephantulus rupestris)

Despite its mouse-like appearance and diminutive size, this critter isn’t a rodent. In fact, it’s actually more closely related to elephants and sea cows! I just looked up "what the sneef I'm snorfin here animal" and your tags from a year ago informed me that it was an elephant shrew!!! those are such delightful creatures!!!! you are responsible for bringing so much joy into my life!!!!!!! Elephant shrews (aka sengis) are related to aardvarks, manatees, and of course, elephants. (They aren't especially closely related to true shrews though.)

They belong to the taxonomic clade Afrotheria, which are basically a bunch of mammals that evolved in Africa in the Cretaceous period when it wasn't connected to Eurasia, so they diversified and spread out into lots of different environmental niches.

Presumably a lot of these Afrotherians died out as a result of competition with animals in the same niches from Eurasia when the continents came together, but thankfully we are still left with megafaunal elephants, big ol' sea cows, tiny insectivorous elephant shrews, semi-aquatic giant elephant shrews (potamogalidae), golden moles, and probably my personal favorite: tenrecs which are funny little hedgehoggy mouse-lookin' things that are basically only found in Madagascar.

It looks like an electric type Pokemon dude.

Golden-rumped Sengi (Rhynchocyon chrysopygus) AKA Golden-rumped Elephant Shrew

Status: Endangered

East Kenya

I'VE been reading up on small mammals again. I feel like sengìs need more love. Here's three that are particularly cool.

This is a golden rumped sengi. The colours on these little buggers are really striking, like a dark mahogany red through golden yellow with a nice stripey pattern on the back.

The chequered sengi also has a nice coat pattern, which is kind of goldish brown base with alternating white spots of darker brown and lighter gold

this is a four toed sengi. Big eyes, long whiskers and brown and white eyeliner.

Sengis are also known as elephant shrews but they're more closely related to tenerecs despite the name. There's about 20 known species of sengi as of 2023.

Since I already made a mole post, I want you to take a look at the black and rufous sengi

Also known as the elephant shrew (even though they are not true shrews, but most 'shrews' are not true shrews anyway :D ) these things existed before carnivora(bears, cats, dogs, etc) and their closest relatives are elephants, dugongs and ardvarks. They are semi monogamous, but in a really weird way where females only chase other females off and males only defend their territory against other males, and despite being a monogamous animal they hate being near each other lol, still, they are capable of splitting the labour of keeping a territory, if one of them got babies or is injured the other takes over the more gruelling tasks! That's pretty cool.

They build little "highways" so they can forage more easily and escape faster.

Just really cool critters people dont usually know about.

(for the people who thought this was a tlt blog: mainly, yes, but sometimes a weird little guy will show up between Ianthe posts, I'm sorry)
