it starts when they first find bono. because they are sus as hell- they keep sensing this weird presence that says it's a nen user but the intentions towards them aren't hostile.

feitan is the first to find this guy and its this weird ass motherfucker. they box and bono actually manages to put fei on his ass with battle cantabile and uvo has to come in and knock the bricks off of him.

cut to post recruitment, feitan wants a rematch because, yeah of course he would, and bono says sure but feitan brings his sword. and bono is like 'dude. if we fighting we fight with hands. if we fighting with blades, give me one too'

and feitan gives him this dumb ass look like 'i dont carry around spare swords'

and bono just shrugs like 'ok fine then we aint boxing'

and they sort of play it like that for the duration of a couple all-troupe missions. It starts as feitan learning how to box, but then one day bono cancel a sparring session and says he wants to check out the library.

and fei has this moment, as a fellow illiterate, and goes ". . . you can read?" mostly out of embarrassment for himself. and bono shows him books about astronomy.

and that's the first moment of like, non violent closeness they share. and they think nothing of it because they're both dense as hell.

i imagine this is like the slowest slowburn imaginable.

feitan is emotionally constipated and bonolenov's first priority is revenge and combat.

HOWEVER. somewhere close to five years before present day, bono realizes he misses feitan. like actually misses him.

and it's like a snap after (counts on fingers uuuuuh) 8 years? of knowing each other. bono just realizes, while sitting outside at night, watching the stars.

and so when they get together for another troupe related mission, bono pulls feitan aside before they can part ways and very formally asks him out.

feitan, who has zero sense of tact, just says yes. and then takes about five more seconds to realize what was just asked of him. phinks is his wingman tho and handles the following panic.

and then yeah :3 they hold hands.

im very bad at making satisfying relationships ;w;

i didnt think my weird cult would get this far.

i do have some more thoughts about them though i cant be allowed to have them please-
