Y'all love morally grey characters until it's not some brooding and sarcastic attractive guy with a soft spot, and instead, a character who's human/complex in their actions and thoughts.

We have seriously entered an era of literature and media where we only want characters that you can easily put on a morality scale. When we come across characters who's actually balanced in their actions, we still desperately want to put them on one side without considering the other. What happened to good character analysis? What happened to character depth?

The Yadda-Yadda

              A lot of writing is developing your intuition. Luckily, you’re already working on this whenever you read or watch anything. However, one situation your intuition might be yelling that you aren’t hearing is the “yadda yadda”.

              This is when you kind of skip through action or dialogue to get to a different portion in the same scene. It looks like, “She exited the car, waved to Dave and walked inside. Then she found Stacey. “Hey, Stace.” "

              It can mean you’re getting impatient with your own scene and just want to get through it to another part, or you’re bored of writing it. This may mean that the scene is running too long, or is actually unnecessary altogether.

              It’s good practice to listen to what you feel when you’re writing—if you’re feeling impatient or bored of a scene, a reader may feel the same way. Try seeing if you can change something to make the scene more interesting, or ask yourself if it really serves a purpose. If you absolutely had to take it out, what would you do? Or do you need to do anything?

              That being said, don’t listen to the voice that tells you a scene you’re writing is horrible or that you’re a bad writer, that’s not your intuition talking, that’s just a mean voice. Learning intuition is as much about learning what to listen to as learning what not to listen to.

Hey, I’m just here to say you’re extremely missed and that, even though there’s probably not much I could say to make any of the bad things less awful, I’m hoping for an easier and gentler future for you soon. Take care, ok?

Oh man, thank you so much for sending this, and I'm sorry it's taken so long to respond (and to the other person who sent me an ask, too—I'm not sure when I'll get to it but please know it was seen and means so much). It has just been. So awful. I won't dump on the public at large everything that's happened, you don't need that novel, but it feels like every day life's falling apart more and more.

Just, seriously, thank you for sending this, and to the couple of people who checked in with chats (again, I'm sorry if I haven't responded yet, spoons are just very limited). There have been a lot of times throughout this where I get overwhelmed by everything going on and some truly horrific people I've met in the fandom and I've considered deleting everything permanently! Very often!!! Tbh I'm still struggling with that VERY intense urge while writing this. I feel so unsafe, and scared, and run down.

And tbh, it's really hard to believe anyone could care about me when I feel so awful and worthless, I feel like it must be an obligation, or I somehow accidentally manipulated people, but I'm trying to cling to that being the brain demons talking. Because I really appreciate the time and effort anyone's taken with me. And I really miss fandom and fun, even if it's weighed down with some significant trauma—I still love the stories and the characters and, most importantly, the amazing people I've met here. Outside of any fandom I've poked around in, the wonderful people I've met matter the most, and I'm trying to cling to that.

I really enjoy talking with everyone, running little projects/events, and for the first time in years actually writing again. (I've been slowly plucking away at that AU I mentioned a few times and I want to start posting for an event this month but! Ahhh!!!) I would like to try and be active again, and I'm so sorry for just being such an absolute goddamn mess. I feel like this is all too much to even say, but I do want to just be honest about all of it. Still, again, thank you so much for reaching out <3 And I'm sorry this is so ridiculously long even though I don't feel like I'm saying much and nothing important, I didn't intend for this answer to be a word-vomit update, just. Things suck, but you guys are good, and I hope things are as okay as you can be on your side of the screen <3

After a whole bunch of nothing, IDW finally gave me meat to chew.

Where do I begin here?

Tangle is scared of what Lanolin might do if she discovers that the hated Phantom Rider is Sonic. On one hand, it's laughable how Tangle could even be remotely concerned: Sonic vs. Lanolin would be like Hydrogen Bomb vs. Coughing Baby. On the other, though, it's very telling that Lanolin has created a climate of terror around her, and her friends are intimidated by her anger that she has expressed multiple times by now.

(in fact, this is the reason I feel nothing at the panel of Lanolin venting her frustration on a punching bad with a furious look on her face. Lanolin's singular emotion is anger and disdain at the whole world. I bet she did the same thing when Tangle played with her paddle ball too much.)

And then Whisper casually admits that she can't trust herself anymore, after the incident with Silver. This girl was a one-woman army so competent even Silver gushed about her, determined enough to pursue Mimic in a revenge quest... and both him and Lanolin reduced her to an insecure, gaslighted wreck who can only rely on Tangle like she's her handler and not her gf. She has become the 🥺 widdle bapygirl who can't do nothing right if Tangle isn't there to hug her and tell her she's not alone 🥺

(btw, shout out to the panel where they hug all happy and wholesome, because yay ship tease)

was a deliberate treat. Because it's beautiful. Look at IDW Sonic doing his only heroic action in the whole comic <3

But man. I didn't even touch on Surge somehow deciding that she has to earn admiration from people, which is proof Stanley is deadset on woobifying her, previous characterization and motivations be damned. (seriously why would she care about deserving admiration, when the general audience is freely giving her all the attention she apparently craves? Who installed morals in her brain?)

But whatever. I just feel bad for Whisper now. Someone save her from this mess.
