I was asked for ressources on Western Sahara so here is a list.
Context: Western Sahara was colonized by Spain. In 1975 Spain was about to leave and they somehow decided that it was their right to fucking give the land despite the fact that the people did not want it. So Spain kinda agreed to give the land to Morocco (2/3) and Mauritania (1/3). Except they had no right to. Morocco then organized the “Green March” a march during which Moroccan colonizers marched to Western Sahara and settled there. Becoming settlers in a land that did not belong to them. Morocco claims that Western Sahara belongs to them because once a long time ago (in like 1040) the chiefs of multiple Sahrawi tribes allegedly swore allegiance to the Sultan of Morocco. It makes no freaking sense. On top of it the founder of the dynasty to which Western Sahara allegedly swore allegiance was an Amazigh man from Mauritania not from Morocco. Anyway after Morocco colonized Western Sahara in 1975, a war broke. In 1979, Mauritania gave back the land Spain had given them but Morocco still refused to give back their land to the Sahrawi people. They actually decided that if Mauritania didn’t want that piece of Western Sahara then it would also belong to Morocco and they colonized it too. In 1991 a ceasefire was signed under the condition that a vote would be organized for the independence of Western Sahara. Except they never voted… Morocco refuses to. In 2020, the Polisario (the name of the Sahrawi resistance) blocked a bunch of trucks between the border of Western Sahara and Mauritania. Morocco considered that it was a declaration of war and the ceasefire ended.
(If people wanna know how Algeria is involved in all this just tell me I’ll make a post)
Now the ressources to learn more about what’s happening!!
Sons of the clouds, the last (colony of Africa) a documentary in Spanish and Hassania (Sahrawi language) about Western Sahara. The link included subtitles in French.
An article from Amnesty international regarding how a Sahrawia activist, Sultana Khaya, was abused by Moroccans authorities.
The book “Sáhara occidental: un viaje a la libertad” by Taleb Alisalem a sahrawi activist. Only available in Spanish but if you have Twitter you should really really follow him. He shares a lot of information past and current on the subject with sources.
A human rights watch article from 2022 about the situation in Western Sahara (the article mention the Human rights situation in Morocco too)
Because listening to local journalists is very very important here is a Sahrawi newspaper in multiple languages: in Arabic in English in French and in Spanish
The APS (Algeria Press Service) is also a good ressource BUT I wouldn’t suggest to quote it when you’re debating with someone who is pro colonialism. Algeria is 100% pro Western Sahara so people against the independence of Western Sahara don’t consider that Algeria is a reliable source on the subject.
A friend suggested the Book “Sahara occidental: conflit oublié, population en mouvement” by Sébastien Boulay (Western Sahara: forgotten conflit, displaced population) to my knowledge its only available in French maybe in Spanish too as the co-author is Spanish. I personally haven’t read this one yet but I 100% trust the person who recommended me the book.

Bessières' letters from Russia...
... or at least some snippets thereof, translated to the best of DeepL's ability from a sales catalogue (Osenat 15 June 2014). At sale was a collection of letters from Bessières to his family and from his family to him, starting in 1805 (?). Volume III contained the correspondence during the Russian campaign, and there were several quotes in the catalogue that I thought somebody might find interesting:
– Mayence, 12 May [1812] : ‘... Here we are at Mayence, despite heat and dust. The emperor got here a long time before anyone else, because the other carriages had to be repaired en route... We are going to a country where the climate may well be variable at times...’. (volume III, no. 239).
- Dresden, 17 May 1812: ‘... The Emperor and Empress of Austria are expected tomorrow, and everything suggests a few days of Court and festivities. I am very satisfied with all these meetings; the Empress has borne the journey very well. I confess that I feared she might be indisposed. The Emperor is in good health. As for us whose health is of no consequence, we are doing well or badly, depending on whether we are treated well or badly...’. (volume III, n° 240). - Dresden, 26 May [1812]: ‘... The stay in Dresden has been longer than we thought, it is likely that the arrival of the King of Prussia will delay the departure until the end of the week...’. (volume III, n° 241, with autograph apostille signed by the marshal's father-in-law). - Dresden, 28 May [1812]: ‘... This mark of esteem infinitely flattered me on behalf of the Emperor of Austria. Empress Marie-Louise will remain in Dresden for a few more days, after which she will go to Prague where she will stay for some time...’. (volume III, no. 244). - Dresden, 29 May [1812]: ‘... We are leaving today. The emperor has allowed me to spend a few days in my estate while he stays in Thorn [Bessieres had received an endowment in Kruszwica in Poland]...’. (volume III, no. 243)
- Thorn [Toruń, in present-day Poland], 6 June [1812]: ‘... I spent a few days in Crucewice [Kruszwica in present-day Poland]. It is a vast piece of land, as big as a province, and earns nothing... The Emperor leaves this evening for Danzig. I'm not going, I'm going to wait for His Majesty in Osterode. Until we arrive at Conisberg [Königsberg, i.e. Kaliningrad in present-day Russia], there will be gaps in my correspondence, because the couriers do not leave regularly, and the passage of the army has temporarily interrupted the postal service...’. (volume III, no. 246). - Schippenbeil [Powiat Bartoszycki in present-day Poland], 15 June [1812]: ‘I have not written to you since Torhrn [Toruń in present-day Poland]; it would have been difficult for me to send you my letter, because not having accompanied the Emperor to Danzig and Königsberg [Dansk in present-day Poland and Kaliningrad in present-day Russia], I found myself far from the line of the estafettes. I am not to join His Majesty before Insterburg [Cherniakhovsk in present-day Russia] on the 8th...’. (volume III, no. 247).
- Gumbinnen [Goussev in present-day Russia], 19 June [1812]: ‘...Yesterday I rejoined the Emperor. (volume III, no. 251). - Kowno [Kaunas in present-day Lithuania], 24 June [1812]: ‘We crossed the Niemen this morning... I hope that this campaign will soon be over... I do not write to you as often as I would like, the passage of the army temporarily affects communications; we ourselves sometimes remain three or four days without news from Paris...’. (volume III, no. 249) - Wilna [Vilnius in present-day Lithuania], 4 July [1812]: ‘... You complain that I rarely write to you. It is the effect of circumstances; communications are often interrupted because of the march of the troops...’. (volume III, no. 251).
- Wilna [Vilnius], 8 July [1812]: ‘... The enemy is on the other side of the Duina. So far he has done nothing but retreat. You are probably involved in politics in Paris; here we leave politics to the side, and we are very busy looking after our stomachs which, although they are no more difficult than usual, are always afraid of running out of the necessities...’. (Volume III, no. 252). - Gloubokoié, [July 1812]: ‘I'll give you some news of me... Since I left Vilna I have not been able to write to you because no couriers are sent on the road... I'm doing very well. I'm arriving a little tired...’. (Volume III, no. 268). - Witebsk, 1st August [1812]: ‘... Always on the march, and continually on horseback since we left Vilna, I have not been able to give you my news as often as I would have liked. Here we are in Vitebsk. We were hoping for a battle; the Russians have withdrawn again; so, with the exception of a few partial affairs, everything has been manoeuvres and marches...’. (Volume III, No. 255).
- Witebsk, 6 August [1812]: ‘...It is excessively hot here... we have been resting for eight days and we needed it.The enemy is still withdrawing...'.(volume III, no. 256).- Witebsk, 11 August [1812]: ‘... I am going to get on horseback to go to the Nieper where the Emperor has his headquarters. But I will write to you in three days because then we will have arrived, and as long as we are marching we must give up giving and receiving news… Do you know that we are a long way from each other... it is to be hoped that it will not be long; we want it as much as you do, but we have no will but that of the master...’. (Volume III, no. 257). - Smolensk, 24 August [1812]: ‘... I would have liked to write to you at length, but I cannot do so today, I am going to accompany with His Majesty on horseback...’.(volume III, no. 258)
- Dorogobouj, 27 August 1812: ‘We are now well on the way to Moscow... I am writing to you 60 leagues from this capital. It is a long way from here to Paris. I am bearing the fatigue very well and although I sleep in the bivouac most of the time, it does nothing to damage my health... I'm writing to you in a shed, sitting on a bench and on a table, both of which have the feel of the country. I have my horses left and right under the same roof, and I wait until after dinner ... which I find quite idle when I am hungry. His Majesty is very kind to me, and I have been very grateful. When I arrived from Smolensk I had my carriages at the rear. His Majesty sent for me to have lunch and dinner with Him. We were promised that we would be fine in Moscow. It seems to me that this is where this war should end... The army is marching; we will probably leave tonight. Tomorrow I shall be 8 leagues further from you. I hope we make enough of the war and of the journey to keep our children quiet and at rest...'. (volume III, no. 260).
- Gjat, 2 September 1812: ‘... You are ingenious at tormenting yourself. However, you must be reasonable and not believe that cannonballs always fall where no cannon is fired, because I must tell you the truth: I have travelled three hundred places without seeing a single one... It would be very strange if we arrived in Moscow without a battle. We are now only forty places away. I will tell you that everyone wants a battle, because they believe it will end the war...’. (Volume III, no. 261). <On the battlefield of Borodino> - From the bivouac’, 8 September [1812], “at 4 a.m.”: ’Yesterday we had a great battle... I am doing very well. I have often told you that I would make the epitaph of the world. All the Marshals are doing well. My brother [General Bertrand Bessieres] was slightly wounded in the shoulder. He is with me and will be riding in a few days' time. Write to my sister; he has nothing missing, he is doing very well, his wound means nothing although it is a little sore. Everyone around me is well. The Guard has not fought. The Russians got a good thrashing...’. (volume III, n° 262).
<In Moscow> - Moscow, 17 September [1812]: ‘I haven't written to you since we arrived in Moscow... because, with the city in flames, we had to relocate a lot and spend a lot of time on horseback. Imagine Paris in flames; you can't imagine such horror. This governor must be a great villain...’. (Volume III, no. 263).
- Moscow, 20 September 1812: ‘... We are in Moscow but all we have left are ruins, with the exception of a few districts that escaped the flames. These people must be very barbaric to burn down their capital. I've made a decision you'll appreciate. I have almost no carriages left - I've decided to get rid of them. The viceroy [Eugene de Beauharnais, viceroy of Italy] will probably take them. All I have left is a wagon and a chest of silverware. If things work out, you will be paid in Paris. One must know how to do without what is not necessary. I am very dissatisfied with my House. Pillage demoralises everything, and I don't like my people getting involved. If I see the banks of the Rhine again soon, I promise you a clean house...’. (volume III, n° 264).
- Krasnoié, 2 October 1812: ‘I have not written to you since 20 September... because I was detached for a few days with an army corps... I hope to return to Moscow in the next few days and I will compensate you for my silence... The viceroy [Eugene de Beauharnais, viceroy of Italy] has taken some of my equipment and silver. The bills had to be sent to Paris. I think the total is at least forty thousand francs. You must take care to have this money withdrawn... These funds will be used to replace what I have sold... An inventory of the items sold had to be sent. The two carriages were taken for 10,000 ff. each...’. (volume III, no. 265).
- Smolensk, 10 November [1812]: ‘It is a long time since I wrote to you... Since leaving Moscow, i.e. for nearly a month, I have not had the opportunity to do so. We learned of the follies and extravagances of some brigands in Paris [General Malet's conspiracy]. You can imagine what an impression it made on us; we find it quite extraordinary that all this should have happened without anyone knowing about it. Here we are in Smolensk, and soon closer, I hope. The weather is dreadful, snow and ice are the roses of the country...’. (Volume III, no. 266). - Witebsk, 16 December 1812: ‘I am doing very well... I am very much looking forward to embracing you, you, my son and our family...’. (volume III, no. 267).
- Posen [Poznań in present-day Poland], 27 January [1812]: ‘... I beg you... to calm down about me. I am well, and you know very well that I am not of a complexion to suffer from serious illnesses. I saw that the Corps législatif was to be convened on 1 February. I hope that this time I will be able to see the deputies from Prayssac at my leisure [the Marshal's birthplace]... Poor Fajol died in Konisberg [Königsberg, Kaliningrad in present-day Russia]...’. (volume III, no. 269).
- Posen, 29 January 1813: ‘General Lanusse [Pierre dit Robert Lanusse] left yesterday for Paris... he will probably give you a hundred louis that I lent him for his journey because he had only paper and could not get any money. So I'm increasing my little treasure, as you can see, and I'm sure of my guardian. Which doesn't prevent me from sleeping. I didn't want a receipt, as you can well imagine... Prince Eugène, who has a thousand regards for me, wants me to tell you that he sometimes talks to me about you, and that he esteems and loves you very much...’. (volume III, n° 270).

Tozer for the character sending ask game
I'm so sorry that I haven't been able to answer this one sooner, especially as I've been so looking forward to doing so!
First Impression Enamoured by his sheer physical presence, fantastic accent, and clear claim to the title of Chief Moany Bastard in Residence.
It's always amusing to me to see Tozer call Hickey out for grousing when he himself does nothing throughout that first episode especially but complain and ostensibly not give a shit about anything.
Impression Now Well, he gives SO MANY SHITS ABOUT ALL THE THINGS, I'll tell you that much! And there are just so many aspects of him that I find endlessly intriguing.
I think he's far cleverer than he's often given credit for being, for one thing, especially in terms of emotional intelligence. And I'm fascinated by the way he doesn't actually rely on his physical presence (or his weapon, for that matter) even though he quite easily could. Tozer is far more likely to try to solve a problem with words than with brute force.
I want to rant more soon about the philosophical sort of thread running all through Tozer's storyline too. The question of whether a man has a soul and if so, what that truly means. There's Heather, who only dies long after his soul has been consumed, and Collins, for whom the death of body and soul happens simultaneously. And finally Morfin, very much still in possession of his soul but who begs for death anyway as his body and mind give out first instead. And there's Tozer, intimately connected to all three.
I think there's something more there about that being a source of real fear for Tozer as well - some of the only times we see him explicitly afraid are when he's confronted with such things. Even facing down Tuunbaq I don't know that he feels that much fear, even if only because he's too focused on action and survival. The loss of soul and of humanity in general though seems a more visceral trigger for him.
Favorite Moment I have to go for the entirety of the final Tuunbaq showdown, I think. There's just so much to rant about in his every action in that scene.
I love the sheer physicality of it all - pacing frenetically like a literal caged animal. It's one of the only times he properly throws his weight around and it makes me feel some kind of way that it only happens once he's already in chains. There's a fun little detail I only just this second noticed - that his yanking on the chain nearly pulls Hodgson and Golding's arms from their sockets at the other end of it - and another fascinating moment right afterwards where everyone else stares around in bewilderment but Tozer is the only one looking up in fury at Hickey himself.
Then there's the moment when Tuunbaq's almost upon them, that switch flips for Tozer (interestingly, right after Hickey makes mention of men with their souls 'et out') and he's in full Marine-mode. The absolute laser focus! That clear commanding voice and the fact that it's obeyed immediately! The fact that it's Armitage that he chooses to single out and demand the gun from! Every bit of it is exquisite! I'm always put in mind of that quote about ruthlessness - about how it's not about being mean but about being able to see a bright clear line between A and B and caring about nothing else but following that line. That's Tozer in that scene for me - ruthless in the best and most fascinating sort of way.
And finally, the gut-punching pièce de résistance - that split-second pause before he marches off to meet his doom, no chance, no choice, and a gun in his hand. A soldier to the last. :'(
Idea for a Story I've been working on a short piece for a while now - just a single scene really - that continues on Tozer and Little's E08 confrontation. Tozer's protective nature sort of just takes over and he feels he can't in all good conscience leave Little, noggin-bonked and vulnerable, in the midst of the chaos. Haven't decided yet whether it'll just be one weirdly intimate wee encounter of Tozer staying long enough to offer his protection or whether it'll go further than that...?
Unpopular Opinion I don't particularly care for Tozer/Armitage?
I like what the actors did with it - purposefully being near one another in scenes and putting in lots of lovely nuance etc. Nevertheless, it's like the opposite of the Benoit Blanc meme for me -
"Makes damn sense. Doesn't compel me, though"
Favorite Relationship Slightly out of left field perhaps but I'm actually going to go for Tozer's relationship with Private Heather.
The effect Heather's injury and eventual death has on Tozer and the way he interacts with the world around him simply cannot be overstated. This wonderful post sums up the importance of that relationship far better than I can and guts me every time with its final line referencing the infamous pudding vs. cathedral debate:
-
"It is his job to protect these people, putting his own men at risk on their behalf, and they crush the most vulnerable of his men, the one I’d bet meant the most to him, without even noticing... ...Tozer loved Heather. Private Heather was a force for good in Tozer’s life. Had he lived, or maybe if he’d even been granted a kinder, less pointless death, things might have turned out differently for everyone. If we can judge people at all based on how they affected those around them, I’m willing to bet that Private Heather was a cathedral."
Favorite Headcanon I like the idea of Tozer having grown up as a shrimpy lil guy - the runt of the schoolyard - and only taking a growth spurt later in life.
I think that's a really fun and neat explanation for why he solves most of his problems with words and not brute force for one thing. One could also argue it as an explanation for the chip he has on his shoulder generally speaking and why he's caring/protective toward others - he knows too well what it's like to feel small and powerless.
#Apologies for the delay on this one#It's been in my drafts for weeks now because Tumblr was being a dick about letting me edit it properly#We got there in the end though!#And it couldn't have come at a better time when I was already in such a Tozer-y mood#Asks#Ask Game#Friendos!#The Terror#The Terror AMC#Solomon Tozer

A long read about a consistently quoted covid minimizer who may en up in charge of the NIH. The pro-infection rhetoric that has recently been strenghtening antivax sentiment in general society is mostly his fault.
By Walker Bragman
On Saturday, The Washington Post reported that a top contender for Donald Trump’s new National Institutes of Health director was Stanford professor Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, a health economist known for his pro-infection advocacy throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. If confirmed, the controversial professor will oversee the largest funder of biomedical and behavioral research on the planet.
As the new Trump administration takes shape, each appointment has been seemingly more fraught than the last. For example, on Wednesday, Rep. Matt Gaetz, who had previously been caught up in a Department of Justice sex trafficking investigation, was announced as the choice for Attorney General. The next day, anti-vaccine conspiracy theorist Robert Kennedy Jr. was announced for Health and Human Services Secretary. Kennedy, who has mused that COVID-19 was genetically engineered to spare Ashkenazi Jews, suggested that chemicals in water are turning children gay or transgender, and falsely claimed vaccines cause autism, is an ally of Bhattacharya.
The Stanford professor is likely among the most extreme of the lot. While, as The Post noted, Bhattacharya has never held a position managing any position overseeing a large bureaucratic organization, he has been a central figure in an organized, well-funded campaign by the political right to undermine public health in America that has been raging since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Bhattacharya has spent years arguing in favor of “natural,” or infection-acquired, immunity and casting doubt on vaccines and government efforts to control the worst public health crisis in a century, bolstering the position of GOP politicians and right-wing dark money groups. He has even spread conspiracy theories about the very agency he is on the verge of leading, alleging that a small number of top bureaucrats have been using funding to stifle dissent.
Should he be confirmed, Bhattacharya will surely inject unscientific right-wing ideology into the very heart of the agency responsible for leading the fight against infectious diseases.
Infection Advocate Bhattacahrya first taste of the national spotlight came in the spring of 2020. In March that year, he co-authored a Wall Street Journal editorial arguing against lockdowns and making the case that COVID was less dangerous than public health authorities were predicting.
“If it’s true that the novel coronavirus would kill millions without shelter-in-place orders and quarantines, then the extraordinary measures being carried out in cities and states around the country are surely justified,” it read. “But there’s little evidence to confirm that premise—and projections of the death toll could plausibly be orders of magnitude too high.”
That article preceded the release of pre-print study Bhattacharya co-authored purporting to show that the SARS-CoV-2 virus was far more infectious—and less deadly—than the global scientific community was warning. The study’s flaws, from methodological issues to undisclosed funding from the founder of JetBlue, a vocal critic of COVID lockdowns, were quickly revealed. Nevertheless, the paper was hugely influential on the political right and its findings not only impacted policy in the U.S. but abroad as well in countries like the UK.
Several months later, Bhattacharya co-authored the Great Barrington Declaration, a widely rebuked, discredited document calling on governments and scientists to reject large-scale COVID mitigation policies in favor of “focused protection” for the elderly. The idea was that by allowing widespread infection of the rest of the population, herd immunity could be achieved quickly and with minimal disruption to the economy. World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called the plan “unethical” and 14 major public health organizations published an open letter denouncing it.
The document itself was written and signed at a conference hosted by a libertarian think tank called the American Institute for Economic Research, a month ahead of the 2020 election. It added a scientific veneer to the public health approach preferred by the Trump administration and right-wing groups like The Heritage Foundation, which saw lockdowns as a greater threat than the virus itself. Planning for the event had taken place over the summer and involved the Trump administration directly through health policy adviser Dr. Scott Atlas, who, like Bhattacharya, was affiliated with the Hoover Institution. Atlas helped secure passage to the U.S. for UK-based declaration co-author Dr. Sunetra Gupta under the pretext of a meeting with Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar.
While the declaration did little to help Trump’s 2020 prospects, it did propel Bhattacharya to right-wing stardom. He has used his megaphone to continue to evangelize the benefits of mass infection and the harms of government efforts to curb the spread of a deadly virus.
Despite the fact that the SARS-CoV-2 virus would go on to kill more than 1.2 million Americans and leave millions more suffering long COVID, Bhattacharya never changed his position on lockdowns and mitigations. His false and misleading statements about government efforts to curb the spread of the virus are too numerous to list here, though Bhattacharya has blamed “lockdowns” for all manner of ills, including possibly even Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. He has also asserted that masks do not work and harm child development without an expertise on the matter and was an early advocate to reopen schools with no mitigation measures in place.
Conspiracy Theories While the Great Barrington Declaration was not itself explicitly anti-vaccine, its central premise—that reopening could safely occur without them—has made Bhattacharya a natural ally of the anti-vax movement. Over time, the professor has moved steadily in their direction. He has repeatedly claimed, for example, that the small risks associated with COVID vaccines outweigh their benefits for young people. In a particularly ill-timed op-ed, he called universal vaccination in India “unethical” on the grounds that a majority of Indians had natural immunity, writing that “for recovered Covid patients…the vaccines provide no benefit and some harm.” Incredibly, several months later, in a piece making the same case for the U.S., he argued that mandating vaccines here would deny doses to countries in need of them, including India.
In September 2022, Bhattacharya misleadingly claimed that the new bivalent boosters were insufficiently tested and alleged that the CDC and FDA were “flying blind.”
The professor has also spoken at events with anti-vaxxers like millionaire Steve Kirsch, who asserts that the shots are responsible for millions of deaths. In March, Bhattacharya spoke at the vice presidential announcement event for Robert Kennedy Jr.’s independent presidential campaign.
Important Context readers will also recall that Bhattacharya was the organizer of a recent health policy symposium at Stanford seemingly aimed at rewriting pandemic history to vindicate fringe positions adopted by the political right. The event was stacked with conspiracy mongers and anti-vaccine voices like Alex Berenson.
Beyond his promotion of anti-vaccine narratives, Bhattacharya has also pushed the unsupported claim that COVID emerged from a lab leak and claimed that Dr. Fauci was involved in a cover-up. The professor recently joined the board of directors of BioSafety Now, a controversial scientist group pushing the lab leak origin story for COVID despite evidence consistently pointing to zoonosis.
Bhattacharya has long held that the mainstream rejection of his ideas is not a reflection of their scientific merit, but rather the result of “censorship” by key public health officials including Dr. Anthony Fauci and former National Institutes of Health Director Francis Collins, who communicated privately over email about rebutting the Great Barrington Declaration. He has baselessly claimed that academics self-censor to get NIH funding for their research, suggesting that top bureaucrats like Collins used their positions to enforce their personal beliefs.
Political Operative Bhattacharya’s contrarian views and pro-infection advocacy may have alienated him from the mainstream of public health, but they have earned him powerful allies, including, as The Post noted, billionaires Peter Thiel and Elon Musk, who has supported his censorship claims.
Bhattacharya has also been a favorite in the world of right-wing dark money, having written for the Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank with ties to billionaire industrialist Charles Koch, been cited by the Heritage Foundation, and spoken before the secretive, influential Christian Right group Council for National Policy, which connects activists with big money.
The professor holds titles at organizations like the Hoover Institution, where he is a senior fellow (courtesy). He occupies various roles at Collateral Global, a UK-based charity focused on opposing lockdowns, including editor-in-chief and scientific adviser. He is a contributing author to the Australia-based Australians for Science and Freedom.
In the past, Bhattacharya was a senior scholar at the Brownstone Institute when it was formed in 2021. He was part of the institute’s Norfolk Group, which put together a roadmap for a congressional COVID inquiry that mirrored a similar document produced by Heritage weeks earlier. This month, he was a speaker at Brownstone’s recent annual conference. When the Trump-allied Hillsdale College launched its Academy for Science and Freedom, Bhattacharya was one of the first scholars named. The professor was also on the scientific advisory board of the international pandemic denial group PANDA.
Bhattacharya has been awarded with various honors for his work by dark money groups. In April, for example, he won the $250,000 Bradley Prize from the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation, a major funder of right-wing causes. Last month, a new group called the American Academy of Sciences and Letters, which is tied to a larger organization working to establish conservative beachheads on college campuses, gave him an intellectual freedom medal.
Republican politicians have unsurprisingly gravitated to Bhattacharya. The professor personally advised Trump in the summer of 2020 and has been a close adviser and ally of Ron DeSantis. Despite his advocacy for “focused protection,” Bhattacharya stood with the Florida governor as he defended a policy of excluding elderly incarcerated from vaccine prioritization, claiming that vaccinating the population would be pointless given that the virus had already spread through the prisons.
“If someone who is older has already had an infection, I don’t think the vaccine would help them,” Bhattacharya said.
The professor has been an expert witness for Republican lawmakers in Congress as well. When the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic held its first hearing in February 2023, he was one of the first expert witnesses called.
He has also leant his expertise to GOP-led states in cases over their lack of COVID protections, particularly in schools. In those cases, Bhattacharya’s testimony served as a counter to the parents of medically vulnerable children, who argued the lack of safety measures put their kids’ lives at risk.
Notably, several judges have questioned the reliability of Bhattacharya’s expert testimony. In his decision temporarily blocking Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee’s executive order allowing parents to opt their children out of school mask mandates, U.S. District Court Judge Waverly D. Crenshaw observed that Bhattacharya “offered opinions regarding the pediatric effects of masks on children, a discipline on which he admitted he was not qualified to speak,” adding that “his demeanor and tone while testifying suggest that he is advancing a personal agenda.”
“At this stage of the proceedings, the Court is simply unwilling to trust Dr. Bhattacharya,” Crenshaw wrote.
Pursuing Grudges Fueled by his support on the right, Bhattacharya has built up a massive online audience. He has over 544,000 followers on X alone as of the writing of this writing. Seemingly emboldened by this support, he has fired back at his critics, including scientists and journalists, asserting that they have misrepresented his positions.
For example, Bhattacharya has denied that the Great Barrington Declaration was a herd immunity strategy even though the words “herd immunity” appear five times in the document, including in the sentence,“The most compassionate approach that balances the risks and benefits of reaching herd immunity, is to allow those who are at minimal risk of death to live their lives normally to build up immunity to the virus through natural infection, while better protecting those who are at highest risk.”
After Mother Jones reporter Kiera Butler published an article documenting his misleading statements about the bivalent boosters, he went after her on X, encouraging his supporters by liking posts suggesting she had ties to the pharmaceutical industry.
With pro bono representation from New Civil Liberties Alliance (NCLA), a dark money lawfare group that has received funding from Koch to wage a war on the administrative state, Bhattacharya and several other private plaintiffs joined a lawsuit against key officials and agencies within the Biden administration for allegedly coercing social media companies into suppressing their content. The case, Missouri v. Biden—later renamed Murthy v. Missouri—made its way up to the Supreme Court where it was dismissed on the grounds that the plaintiffs lacked standing, having failed to prove they had been harmed by the government.
NCLA is currently trying to revive the lawsuit.
“What Could Go Wrong?” Public health professionals expressed grave concerns about the possible appointment of Bhattacharya. In response to The Post story, for example, Yale epidemiologist Gregg Gonsalves skeeted, “This is all just getting worse.”
Mallory Harris, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Maryland, earned her PhD in biology from Stanford in 2024, had a similar take. “His scientific judgment is questionable at best,” she told Important Context. “As an expert witness in multiple Covid court cases he consistently misconstrued scientific evidence—even going so far as to knowingly cite a retracted study.”
Harris, who led a student group at Stanford to combat science misinformation, has long had Bhattacharya on her radar.
“He has been spreading conspiracy theories about this particular agency for years,” Harris said. “This [likely appointment] is a tremendous blow to independent, rigorous, publicly funded scientific research.”
Frank Han, an adult congenital and pediatric cardiologist, told Important Context that “while hearing a conservative viewpoint is not inherently dangerous to scientific institutions, Bhattacharya has shown through his actions, that he is entirely unsuited for any job at the NIH.”
“Science even at the highest levels of government, places a high value on humility and realizing when you should change course,” he explained, noting that Bhatttacharya never acknowledged the hundreds of thousands of COVID deaths he said would justice mitigation measures in his March 2020 Wall Street Journal op-ed. Han accused Bhattacharya of trying instead to “cover his tracks.”
“Bhattacharya has never honestly engaged with his prior self, rather now consistently holding the viewpoint that COVID restrictions should have ended sooner and schools should have opened sooner,” Han said.
Robert Morris, MD, PhD, an epidemiologist who has taught at Tufts University and the Medical College of Wisconsin, noted that Bhattacharya would be “the first director in the history of the NIH with no clinical experience and minimal biomedical research experience.”
“He is a health economist who would run an agency with no budget line for health economics,” Morris said, adding that the professor “has repeatedly shown disdain for serious biomedical scientists.”
“What could go wrong?” Morris said.

A new round of court records from a lawsuit related to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein were released Monday, which include photos from an accuser as well as an exhibit that mentions discredited allegations she made about Bill Clinton, Donald Trump, Prince Andrew and Richard Branson.
At least 17 documents were unsealed. More than 200 documents have been released since Wednesday.
The records are part of a defamation lawsuit brought by Virginia Giuffre, an alleged victim of Epstein, against his longtime companion Ghislaine Maxwell that the two settled in 2017. Epstein died by suicide in a Manhattan jail while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges.
Maxwell is serving a 20-year prison sentence after she was convicted in 2021 of aiding Epstein's sex trafficking of young women and girls. Her appeal will be heard in March.
The documents unsealed Monday include several photographs produced by Sarah Ransome, who filed a lawsuit against Epstein, Maxwell and other alleged co-conspirators in 2017 under the pseudonym "Jane Doe 43." Ransome was also involved in the Giuffre case as a witness. She was deposed and provided dozens of photographs showing Epstein, Maxwell, herself and other young women on Epstein's private island.
According to another unsealed filing, Ransome testified that some of the pictures were taken by Jean Luc Brunel, a French model scout and associate of Epstein, and given to her by him
Also included in Monday's document unsealing is an exhibit that contains emails sent by Ransome to a New York Post reporter in the fall of 2016.
In those messages, Ransome made allegations that implicated former Presidents Bill Clinton and Donald Trump, Prince Andrew and Richard Branson.
-ABC news
Mr. Trump flew from Bozeman, Mont., to Jackson Hole, Wyo., and Aspen, Colo., on the jet, made by Gulfstream, to attend campaign fund-raisers after Mr. Trump’s signature Boeing 757, often referred to as Trump Force One, experienced a mechanical issue en route to a campaign rally in Bozeman on Friday.
A Trump campaign official said that the campaign had called its charter jet vendor, Private Jet Services Group, after the mechanical failure to get a plane that could ferry the former president, and that the charter service had provided the Gulfstream jet. The official added that the campaign had used that private jet service as a vendor for years, and that it would take efforts to avoid using that plane in the future.
-The New York Times
Speculation about which famous and powerful figures would be tarnished by the Jeffrey Epstein scandal heated up at the end of last year when a judge ordered that court documents from a years-old case related to the disgraced financier be made public. And while Epstein’s black bookcontained a staggering number of A-listers and high-society pals, perhaps the biggest question surrounding the court documents’ unsealing was what they would reveal about Donald Trump.
The hype escalated on the afternoon of January 3, 2024, when Mark Epstein said that three years before his brother died in jail while awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges, he told him he knew secrets that could blow up the presidential election between Trump and Hillary Clinton.
“Here’s a direct quote: ‘If I said what I know about both candidates, they’d have to cancel the election.’ That’s what Jeffrey told me in 2016,” Mark Epstein told the New York Post.
Wild stuff! But Mark Epstein said he didn’t know what information his brother was referring to. And while Trump and Bill Clinton (who have both denied any Epstein-related wrongdoing) were mentioned in both old court documents and those released in early 2024, there was no smoking gun.
Yet questions about Trump’s ties to Epstein persist, as the convicted sex offender is now a conspiracy-theory fixture and more Epstein files could still be unsealed. Here’s a running list of the new revelations and what we have already learned about Trump’s relationship with Epstein.
Trump began palling around with Epstein in the late ’80s, but the depth of their friendship is a subject of debate.
Footage unearthed by NBC News in 2019 shows the two men joking around and ogling women during a party at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in 1992.
In 2002, the mogul told New York, “I’ve known Jeff for 15 years. Terrific guy. He’s a lot of fun to be with. It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side. No doubt about it — Jeffrey enjoys his social life.”
Yes. Flight logs show Trump was on Epstein’s plane multiple times, though he has denied it.
Trump flew on Epstein’s private jet at least seven times between 1993 and 1997, according to flight logs made public during various court proceedings. As the Miami Herald reported in 2021, Trump was accompanied by his then-wife Marla Maples and two of his young children on some of these flights:
The flights were all between Palm Beach and New York City airports, with the June 1994 flight stopping at Ronald Reagan Washington Washington National Airport between Palm Beach and New York. A woman named Marla, apparently Trump’s then-wife Marla Maples, is listed as joining him on the June 1994 flight, along with a Tiffany, apparently their then-infant daughter, and a nanny. Trump’s son Eric is listed as joining him on an August 1995 flight between Palm Beach and New York.
Nevertheless, in a January 2024 Truth Social post, Trump claimed “I was never on Epstein’s Plane, or at his ‘stupid’ Island.” There is no evidence that he ever visited Little Saint James, Epstein’s property in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Bizarrely, it seems Trump unwittingly used a plane formerly own Epstein during the 2024 campaign. The Miami Herald reportedthat the Trump campaign used a blue Gulfstream jet formerly owned by Epstein to travel to several campaign fundraisers after Trump’s private jet experienced mechanical problems on Friday, August 9, 2024:
Trump, enroute on his own private plane to a campaign event in Bozeman, Montana last week, unexpectedly landed in Billings because of mechanical problems, a campaign spokeswoman said. He and part of his staff then flew on a small charter to Bozeman for a rally Friday night. The next day, he switched to another larger Gulfstream with a serial number that matches a plane once owned by Epstein, his former neighbor in Palm Beach, the campaign confirmed. “The campaign had no awareness that the charter plane had been owned by Mr. Epstein,” the spokeswoman said, adding that the charter was commissioned by a vendor that has often been used by the campaign. “We heard about the former owner through the media.”
Epstein’s old plane is now owned by Threshold Aviation Group, an Ontario, California-based company that offers private charter service. The Herald noted that the plane used by the Trump campaign was not the infamous “Lolita Express”; Epstein replaced that plane around 2017 and it “has since been destroyed.”
-The INTELLIGENCER
And that’s just a few things Sir Agent Orange has done.
Republican Donald Trump is heading towards an election rematch with Democratic President Joe Biden in November. How might his criminal prosecutions affect his election campaign?
The 78-year-old is the first former president in US history to be criminally convicted, having been found guilty of falsifying business records.
A few weeks later, the US Supreme Court ruled he had partial immunity in perhaps the most serious case he faces - that he tried to overturn the 2020 election result.
And it was not long before the former president scored a further legal win, when a Florida judge dismissed a case related to his handling of classified documents.
What's it about?
Whether Trump illegally conspired to overturn his 2020 election defeat to Joe Biden.
Federal prosecutors allege he pressured officials to reverse the results, knowingly spread lies about election fraud and sought to exploit the Capitol riot on 6 January 2021 to delay the certification of Mr Biden's victory and stay in power.
He's been charged with four criminal counts, including conspiracy to defraud the US and conspiracy against the rights of citizens.
Some had speculated he would be charged with insurrection, or aiding insurrection, but that is not one of the charges.
He has denied wrongdoing and claimed the Biden administration is behind the prosecution.
-BBC News
A judge on July 15 dismissed the classified documents case against Donald Trump, which clears away one of the major legal challenges facing the former president. In May, Trump was found guilty on 34 counts of falsifying business records in the hush money trial in Manhattan criminal court. Trump is the first former president in US history to be convicted of a felony, and with his third presidential bid under way for 2024, the stakes are high for both him and the country.
Catch up on what you need to know about Trump’s cases, including key evidence, charges and what’s next in the legal process.
Trump was indicted in June 2023 by a federal grand jury in Miami for taking classified national defense documents from the White House after he left office and resisting the government’s attempts to retrieve the materials. Both Trumpand his aide Walt Nauta have pleaded not guilty.
On July 27, 2023, the special counsel charged Trump with three new counts, including one additional count of willful retention of national defense information. Nauta was also charged on two new counts. A third defendant, Carlos de Oliveira, was added to the case and charged with four counts, including being added to the obstruction conspiracy charged in the original indictment.
US District Judge Aileen Cannon dismissed the case on July 15, 2024, saying in a ruling that the appointment of special counsel Jack Smith violated the Constitution.
"In the end, it seems the Executive’s growing comfort in appointing ‘regulatory’ special counsels in the more recent era has followed an ad hoc pattern with little judicial scrutiny,” Cannon wrote.
Key evidence
Recording of Trump discussing holding secret documents he did not declassify
About 100 classified documents found in a FBI search of Mar-a-Lago in August
Surveillance footage turned over to the Justice Department that allegedly shows Nauta and De Oliveira moving document boxes around the resort
-CNN
NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump became the first former American president to be convicted of felony crimes Thursday as a New York jury found him guilty of all 34 charges in a scheme to illegally influence the 2016 election through a hush money payment to a porn actorwho said the two had sex.
Trump sat stone-faced while the verdict was read as cheering from the street below could be heard in the hallway on the courthouse’s 15th floor where the decision was revealed after more than nine hours of deliberations.
The verdict is a stunning legal reckoning for Trump and exposes him to potential prison time in the city where his manipulations of the tabloid press helped catapult him from a real estate tycoon to reality television star and ultimately president. As he seeks to reclaim the White House in this year’s election, the judgment presents voters with another test of their willingness to accept Trump’s boundary-breaking behavior.

Nimona, the 2011-14 webcomic by ND Stevenson, turned into a graphic novel published on May 12, 2015, and adapted into a full cast audiobook on October 4, 2016, has been adapted into an animated movie!
The movie premiered at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France on June 14, 2023. Netflix released a teaser trailer on May 18, 2023, a clip on June 8, 2023, a full trailer on June 14, 2023, another big clip on June 21, 2023, more footage on June 22, 2023, and another big clip on June 27, 2023. The movie released in select theaters starting on June 23.
The movie released on June 30, 2023 on Netflix for streaming! You can also view the movie for free, legally, on YouTube, until February 26th, 2024. Netflix also released a free-to-read digital-only multimedia 358-page artbook for the movie.
For simplified background, Disney cancelled the movie in 2021, but on April 11, 2022, it was announced that Annapurna would produce the movie, DNEG would animate it, and Netflix would distribute it for streaming sometime in 2023. I'm seeing a lot of confusion out there, so I'll make a summary of what else we know. I also keep the Nimona movie fanwiki page up to date with more info as it releases. Other good places to get news: ND Stevenson's twitter, his Tumblr, his personal site, the savenimona twitter, and the movie page on Netflix. While managing the fanwiki I found that Wikipedia's reference articles for the movie were kind of terrible and often quoted things not being said in the articles being quoted, even in their archive versions, so I would stick with first-hand accounts where possible, particularly what's coming from folks working on the movie and the companies making it. Below is a more detailed summary of info.
Nimona by ND Stevenson began life as a school project while Nate was in college. He was a tumblrite and posted the first pages on Tumblr on December 14, 2011. On June 19, 2012, he began publishing the webcomic in full on its own site. Sometime before November 2012, it was contracted for publication as a graphic novel after completion. The webcomic ended on September 30, 2014, and was released as a single graphic novel in entirety on May 12, 2015. It has currently been translated into 16 languages. Nate adapted it into a full cast audiobook that released on October 4, 2016 (you can hear a preview and purchase it via the link above). The graphic novel and audiobook are still available for purchase.
Apologies for maybe getting studio names wrong, some have changed over time. Anyway: the movie rights for Nimona were acquired by 20th Century Fox Animation in June 2015, to be produced by Blue Sky Studios. In June 2017, Fox scheduled the movie to be released on February 14, 2020. Patrick Osbourne was brought on as director, and it was planned to have the movie in the style of Paperman (Osbourne was animation supervisor of Paperman (2012), and went on to direct Feast (2015), which used the same style). After Disney acquired 20th Century Animation (as it was later called), the movie was delayed to March 5, 2021. There was reportedly pushback for queer stuff in the movie. Blue Sky is publicly stated to have shutdown due to the pandemic and money issues, which isn't relevant here, and I would be careful spreading rumors it was for other reasons. A lot of "successful" US companies shut down studios and departments en masse for other very dumb reasons, particularly in recent years, sometimes just because they aren't making as much money as their parent/shareholders wants them to and cutting salaries makes your profits look better to shareholders. The important part is: Blue Sky was being shut down, and Disney officially cancelled the movie in February 2021.
At some point around the cancellation, a video compilation of early release footage and sculpts seemingly from someone involved in the movie's production was released online. It was later taken down, but put back up by iO9 after the Annapurna, DNEG, Netflix production was announced.
After Disney shuttered Blue Sky, according to Variety, the Nimona crew, "led by former Blue Sky co-presidents Andrew Millstein and Robert Baird, shopped the animatic around town. The film caught the attention of Annapurna CEO Megan Ellison, who was familiar with the film and had been tracking the project. “I think anyone who has ever felt misunderstood or like an outsider will connect with N.D. Stevenson’s story like I did,” she said in press material for the film. “When I watched the storyboard reels I immediately fell in love with it. Nothing about it felt conventional or built off market research. It’s bold and mischievous and full of love. Nimona has such a powerful voice.”
Annapurna stepped in and signed up Millstein and Baird as executive producers. They created Shapeshifter Films so the team could finish “Nimona,” and subsequently joined the company, forming Annapurna Animation.
DNEG Animation was hired in the spring of 2021 to help with the animation, becoming collaborators on the film."
On April 11, 2022, it was announced that the film would be produced by Annapurna, animated by DNEG, and distributed by Netflix. Netflix also shared the first summary:
"A Knight is framed for a crime he didn't commit and the only person who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona, a shape-shifting teen who might also be a monster he's sworn to kill. Set in a techno-medieval world unlike anything animation has tackled before, this is a story about the labels we assign to people and the shapeshifter who refuses to be defined by anyone."
Between Netflix's posts and DNEG's Nimona page, as well as folks involved with the film talking about it, and new info released after the Annecy Film Festival announcement, we knew it would release in Summer 2023. Netflix released a primary cast article with images of what the characters look like from Netflix (be warned, both are very spoilery).
What is also interesting about the cast listings is that Ballister's last name was changed from Blackheart to Boldheart.
Sources for Business Insider said that Blue Sky's work would be incorporated into the film somehow. The second production seemingly wasn't started from scratch, and members of the Blue Sky production stayed on to work on the project. This makes sense, given the art was quite similar to what was in that footage released around the film's cancellation in 2021. DNEG crew have stated repeatedly, though, that although they did have a lot of material from the Blue Sky production, they had to make a lot of things from the ground up.
Quane released an official shot from the film on January 4, 2023:
It was announced that the movie would premiere on June 14, 2023, at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France. (Post on Annecy's site, post on DNEG's site)
Two new stills were also released on April 25, 2023, with the Annecy Film Festival announcement:
On May 10, 2023, Netflix posted a new image for the movie:
The May 10 article also had a new movie summary:
"When Ballister Boldheart (Riz Ahmed), a knight in a futuristic medieval world, is framed for a crime he didn’t commit, the only one who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona (Chloë Grace Moretz), a mischievous teen with a taste for mayhem — who also happens to be a shape-shifting creature Ballister has been trained to destroy. But with the entire kingdom out to get him, Nimona’s the best (or technically the only) sidekick Ballister can hope for. And as the lines between heroes, villains and monsters start to blur, the two of them set out to wreak serious havoc — for Ballister to clear his name once and for all, and for Nimona to… just wreak serious havoc.
Directed by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane, Nimona is an epic tale about finding friendship in the most surprising situations and accepting yourself and others for who they are."
Netflix released another still on May 17, 2023. On May 18, they released their teaser, the movie's first poster, and the announcement of the June 30, 2023 general streaming release date!
Netflix also added a new preview image to the Nimona page on the app, featuring Ballister and Ambrosius facing off behind Nimona.
And Netflix started selling Nimona plushies! Amazon (and possibly other vendors) are also selling shirts/jackets with official movie art!
Netflix released more footage of the movie on May 24, 2023! (it's around 6:31 in the video).
Empire magazine released another still for the movie on June 7, 2023, as well as an article in their June 8, 2023 issue.
Variety released a new still on June 11, 2023.
Netflix released a new poster on Jun 13, 2023!
More stills were released in an Entertainment Weekly article on June 14, 2023. And Netflix released even more. More teasers were put up on the Netflix app (though these are quite spoilery, so I'd advise avoiding them). The cast and crew did press tours throughout June 2023.
Again, the Nimona movie fanwiki page has more detailed info on all this.

Got myself a new (e-)book: Paul Holzhausen, "Die Deutschen in Russland 1812". A dubious book on several accounts: a) it's mostly about military stuff, obviously, and b) it was originally published in 1912, on the evening of World War I, and of course is full of nationalist shit. But it's apparently based on plenty of memoirs, diaries, letters and reports of German-speaking survivors, some of which are quoted directly. Unfortunately, most of the time it's the editor summarizing.
I originally got this because I wanted to see if the Westphalians had something to say about Junot at Smolensk (they do), but there's also a nice description of Murat a bit earlier, at Ostrowno:
There were indeed lively battles between the Russians and the French in the area around Vitebsk in the days from 25 to 27 July, in which Bavarian cavalry took part. These battles are usually referred to by the name of the battle of Ostrowno. The Prussian hussar regiment, whose colonel v. Czarnowsky earned his Legion of Honour here, also distinguished itself. The fragment writer left a report about this, which cannot be printed in full due to its length. In bitter words, it criticises the King of Naples, who stood out everywhere as a brilliant vanguard commander, but prematurely destroyed the already decimated cavalry of the French and their allies by rushing off and ruthlessly going to blows, a fatal mistake in the face of an enemy that possessed strong cavalry and in a country which, due to its peculiar characteristics, made the most important task of this type of troop, the reconnaissance service, very difficult for the attacking party.
On the other hand, Murat's heroism was often a shining example to men weary of battle and hardship, and his nonchalant disdain for danger, even the fantastic nature of his appearance, was not unappealing to true horsemen. Let us listen to Wedel's account of the king's appearance at Ostrowno: ‘Murat had reached the Russian army guard, which had taken up a firm position here and seemed determined to delay the onward march of the French army at least for a while. The King of Naples impatiently awaited the arrival of the infantry, as he could do nothing with the cavalry alone against the Russian infantry hidden in the wood. After about an hour, a light Italian regiment arrived on the double and was immediately led into the attack. Now the fighting became livelier and more generalised, especially as artillery and more infantry soon arrived. The low bushes in front of us were completely cleared and we were able to position ourselves in the open field, from where the whole battle could be seen. Murat halted not far from us without paying the slightest attention to the enemy fire to which he was exposed. Then the Italian infantry regiment in front of us, badly hit by the fierce enemy fire, especially from two guns set up at the corner of a wood, began to waver and give way, when suddenly a Russian dragoon regiment burst out from behind the wood, threw itself on the retreating infantry and made them flee, also causing a great bloodbath among them. The whole wing was jeopardised by this retreat. Murat saw this; he shot over like an arrow and placed himself at the head of our first regiment. His mighty voice resounded loudly through the din of battle: ‘Good chevau-légers! Suivez-moi, chassons ces bougres-là. En avant! au galop! marche!’ Inspired by his example, the regiment charged at full speed towards the advancing enemy, lance in hand. Soon everything was in confusion; in the dust and gun smoke one could not recognise one's neighbour; after a short melee the enemy took flight’.

Why have I only just realised today the "you know, I know" quote is featured in multiple songs : serendipity, like crazy, people pt 2. Do you think this is a coincidence or does it have a deeper meaning ? PS. Keep up the nice blog! It's nice to see someone talk about their bond in a mature en respectful way and actually based on facts which they wanted to share with us.
Hi anon! I’ll admit that I’m not very good at lyrics analysis, so please bear with me.
Yes, “you know, I know”—or some variation of that phrase—appears in Serendipity, Like Crazy, and People pt 2. And of course we first heard it in a yoonmin context during the March 2016 live celebrating Yoongi’s birthday.
If it was just a matter of Yoongi using the phrase, that would be one thing. Yoongi likes to use interconnected lyrics in his songs. For instance, People pt 2 borrows phrases from eight, Savage Love, Outro: Tear, and Fake Love. There’s a great analysis here. The way his work connects is really amazing.
I think the real wildcards are Serendipity (written by Namjoon and others), and Like Crazy (written by Jimin and others). We have ten years worth of songs, but all of the “you know, I know” phrases connect to Yoongi and/or Jimin? That would be an incredible coincidence if it wasn’t purposeful.
So…there are really only three options:
1. The use and reuse of that phrase is purposeful and has meaning
2. It’s a statistically incredible coincidence
3. The use and reuse of that phrase is purposeful but has no meaning
I think we can eliminate option 3. We know how thoughtful both Yoongi and Jimin (and all of the members!) are in regards to their music. It’s hard to imagine them going to the effort of including this phrase just for the hell of it.
That leaves us with two other options. From a purely objective/statistical point of view, I think option 1 wins.
But deciding if it is purposeful or not is only half the battle. What does it mean?!
I think we can go back to the first time the phrase is used for help with this. In the live, Yoongi asked each person to say a short message to him for his birthday. Hobi went first and said thank you. Jimin went second and shyly said “you know.” Yoongi seemed to immediately understand him and quickly said “I know” before moving on to Tae.
I think the meaning is that these two have a true understanding of each other. And there are things that they can’t say in front of us, that they don’t need to say because they both already have that deep understanding.
I’m not sure if any of that helps or is even interesting. 😂 But those are my thoughts.
Thanks for the kind words, by the way!
Here’s a hug:
#yoonmin#ask#leave it to me to take all of the fun out of shipping by talking about statistical likelihood#and Tony Montana!#the phrase I know appears in that song 12 times

Description of Napoleon:
« L'offensive est déterminée pour l'Italie; le commandant en chef de cette partie n'est pas encore connu : on a parlé de Beurnonville, puis d'un Corse terroriste, nommé Bonaparte, le bras droit de Barras et commandant de la force armée dans Paris et environs. » — « Un général qui n'a pas trente ans et nulle expérience de la guerre. . . » « Un petit bamboche à cheveux éparpillés, bàtard de Mandrin. »
Quotes from the letters of Mallet du Pan to the court of Vienna, 17 March, 14 May, 11 August 1796.
Approximate translation:
“The offensive is determined for Italy; the commander-in-chief of this part is not yet known: we have spoken of Beurnonville, then of a Corsican terrorist, named Bonaparte, Barras’ right-hand man and commander of the armed forces in Paris and the surrounding area.” — “A general who is not thirty years old and has no experience of war. . .” “A little child* with scattered hair, bastard of Mandrin.”
——-
*I’m not really sure what bamboche means. Some translations say child. I think it might be an archaic term that is no longer used? Idk
Mandrin is apparently like the French Robin Hood who lived during the 18th century.
An interesting thing about the writer, Mallet du Pan, is that the expression “the Revolution devours its children” is attributed to him.

It is such whiplash to like... have intense imposter syndrome to a point where I immediately wanted to leave the round dance within minutes of getting there, then finally starting to relax and make small talk with some people and then get lost in the actual dancing
then coming home and reading this screenshot quoting Jacqueline Keeler:
“Native American doesn’t mean Mexican Indians. It means Native people whose lands are under occupation here in the 48 states by the United States of America,” Keeler says, explaining that she is focused on political and legal status (Littlefeather was never an enrolled member of a tribe) because of the heavy ramifications of that experience across generations. “If you’re not enrolled in a tribe, you are not subject to Indian federal law [and] all of the trauma that happened under any of those terrible policies” such as the forced removal of Native children and placement into boarding schools and foster homes.
biiiig angry rant under the cut
I just can't get over the line "If you’re not enrolled in a tribe, you are not subject to Indian federal law [and] all of the trauma that happened under any of those terrible policies" because that is quite possibly one of the most insulting, stupid, and arrogant fucking things you can say so casually without even a second thought.
When I worked in state government I started to become a lot more informed about ICWA.
So like, did you know that if there's a child whose parents are enrolled but that child is not eligible for enrollment because of silly little things like blood quantum or being mixed from different tribes that all have different enrollment requirements, that child is legally not considered subject to Indian federal law?? ICWA is designed for Native children to be placed with their biological families first if taken into foster care, or within their communities, or within an Indigenous home before even considering a non-Native home. This is specifically because children were stolen en masse and given to non-Native families as recently as the 60s. I have given tobacco to and marched at protests with residential school survivors because quite a lot of them are still alive! Hello, the fucking epigenetics of trauma exist also!! PTSD research shows that descendants of trauma survivors have physical changes in their brain chemistry too.
Jacqueline Keeler exists in a world I guess where if you aren't enrolled then none of the trauma of displacement could ever happen to you, silly!! Except of course if you're taken into fucking foster care away from your family and culture, which is exactly the same trauma that your ancestors went through for generations!
Literally, just tonight at dinner, I was talking with a Tulalip guy who asked me if I worked for the school district and I said "nah but I'm an alumni from this district" (this was an event from the school district I graduated from as well as the local tribes) and we chatted a bit. I said I was Yurok and Métis and he was like "cool" and turned to one of his relatives and was like "Aren't you a bit Yurok?" and she went "What?? No". That's it. If I go on twitter I run into the fear that I'm going to get BraveWarrior3874429759 wanting the exact algebraic formula for what my BQ is before he decides if I'm faking or not. Or we get people like Keeler.
For years I've been really trying to think about the concept of being raised Indigenous. Racially I'm white, am always perceived as such, etc etc. That's reality. I think about my grandma and her brother who got raised by their grandpa who said "I never want them to feel like orphans" after their parents died. It was his own grandmother who was orphaned in the genocide. He moved to Los Angeles because it was safer to be seen as Mexican than as Native, and there are many other California NDNs that have the same family story like that. We're not enrolled but thanks to the help of relatives that died before we could know them, my mom and grandma still got literal reparations money for the land our family lost. When I reached out to the Little Shell tribe just to find more information on my ancestors on my dad's side, the sole enrollment officer (at the time, I'm not sure if they've hired new people now) told me we were cousins and gave me a lot of copies of documents should I try to enroll. I had already told her I can't but she did this anyway.
Toby Vanladingham, on twitter, had a thread a few months ago talking about how there's several Yurok tribal members that are enrolled because they meet the requirements in the tribal constitution in ways aside from just blood degree. He then went on to say that it really doesn't matter because they still recognize who is Yurok regardless of their enrollment status.
I can go on and on about this because the point isn't that we don't experience the trauma, it's that we are still welcomed to experience the culture and our family histories. That's the whole fucking point. My ancestors suffered greatly and made choices that I am still trying to understand in hopes that their descendants would not have to suffer. I think as long as I live I will never, ever understand the terror papa Andy felt or what Angeline went through in that school. I'm angry every time I remember my mom telling me how when she was a little girl and papa Andy told her "Don't tell anybody you're an Indian", and remembering her telling me that confusion growing up about what that meant. I go to these events in person and force myself to confront the immense discomfort over and over again because it gets easier each time, but only by small degrees, and I do this knowing that I am always going to be an outsider. I'm doing it anyway. Fuck Keeler and fuck this whole mindset.
