Summer Doldrums Have Arrived - Market Volume Likely to Continue Fading

In a typical year, barring any external event triggers, trading activity typically begins to decline around the July 4th holiday towards a summer low usually in late August. We refer to this summertime slowdown in trading as the doldrums due to the anemic volume and uninspired trading on Wall Street. Fading summer volume is also why many summer rallies tend to be short lived and can be quickly followed by a pullback or correction.

Above are plotted the one-year seasonal volume patterns for the NYSE since 1965 and since 1978 for NASDAQ against the annual average daily volume moving average for 2024 as of the close on July 5, 2024. The typical summer lull is highlighted in yellow. After spiking around quarterly options expiration and the end of the first half of the year, trading volume has been retreating in typical seasonal fashion. A prolonged surge in volume during the typically quiet summer months, especially when accompanied by market gains, can be an encouraging sign that the bull market will continue. However, should traders lose their conviction and participate in the annual summer exodus from The Street, a market pullback or correction could quickly unfold.

Wall Street’s only “Free Lunch” Served This Weekend

Investors tend to get rid of their losers near year-end for tax purposes, often hammering these stocks down to bargain levels. Over the years the Stock Trader’s Almanac has shown that NYSE stocks selling at their lows on or around December 15 will usually outperform the market by February 15 in the following year. When there are a huge number of new lows, stocks down the most are selected, even though there are usually good reasons why some stocks have been battered.

Our “Free Lunch” strategy is only a short-term strategy reserved for nimble traders. It has performed better after market corrections and when there are more new lows to choose from. The object is to buy bargain stocks near their 52-week lows and sell any quick, generous gains, as these issues can often be real dogs.

This strategy has been profitable in 18 of the last 24 years with an average basket gain of 10.5%. This year’s “Free Lunch” stock basket will be emailed to Almanac Investor subscribers before the market opens on Monday, December 18. Subscribers will receive specific buy limits and stop losses for each stock included and the trades will be tracked in the Almanac Investor Stock Portfolios.

Finally updated my headcanons for the main Ninja's appearances ♡ The ones from last year looked ew to me so this was overdue.

Lloyd: I know he doesn't have curly hair, but I was unhappy with the way I drew it before so I tried something different and really liked this so I stuck with it. Light freckles, scars too obviously. The little braid is a personal touch of mine representing a connection to my OC hehe

Nya: the markings from her Ocean form were so pretty I had to keep them faintly, and the blue streaks in her hair seemed fitting too. Also a small nose piercing because she would. I love giving her turquoise colors too. Round face features

Kai: his spiky hair is always a challenge so I tried finding a way that's easier for me to draw. I love giving him a mullet too. Slightly crooked nose, sharp features overall & moles. Lotsa ear piercings. Tattoos probably as well

Zane: the most fun to do, his robotic features give a lot of freedom to work with. Making his hair half dark half white was a random idea but I love it now. Straight and angular features

Cole: wider face and body shape, long scar from his forehead down to the eye. I gave my best drawing dreads for him and I think I did well. Orange-green eyes from his ghost phase. Oh and a slight stubble, I thought it fit him well. Originally wanted to give Kai one too, maybe next time

Jay: saw a cosplay of him with this lightning scar across his face and I loved it so much I took it over. Also heterochromia for him, it just feels right. Lots of freckles, super fluffy hair. One hair streak looks like a lightning bolt. Soft shapes and features
