And the night sky without a homesick phantom .... | bookmark

A Night Sky in the Woods
#my partner told me she really liked this other version too#....which makes sense because this is pretty much just a 1:1 study of freidrich's original piece haha#and he is probably best known for his fantastic compositions....#caspar david friedrich#i like them both together#cuz the existence of both means the one without the ghost feels like there's an even bigger gaping empty hole where it once was#it's why i decided to make these into an item where both versions exist on a single sheet#but yeah

Hello, I'd be very interested in getting some books from your online store, but can you ship to europe? I know that with the resent GSPR regulation that has been a problem for several artists and small buisness
I’m going to be honest, these (Dec 2024) updates are news to me….
I started selling my work a few months before that and so was unaware when doing my initial research, but yikes :( Thank you for bringing it up, I think to be safe I’ll have to completely close my shop to EU for now. Anyone who ordered something will get refunded of course, but I’m sorry for the inconvenience 😭
BUT…. so, crazy enough, my wife and I will be moving to EU at some point, as her hometown is in Poland. So I will be able to eventually sell there, if by no other means. not anytime super soon, but eventually … hah…

@ashioksdaydream thank you SO much for the interest!! Like that is so sweet to hear, and as a side note i’m perfectly ok with people coloring my inks for fun like that. Unfortunately it appears that even digital items are included in the GPSR update so I cannot 😭 I’m very sorry!

In your post about your new amazing looking coloring book you mentioned you would be selling it at cons in addition to your online shop. Would you be comfortable sharing which cons you are planning to sell at?
Oh yeah of course!! Well currently my wife (halybs) and I have Rose City Comic Con confirmed, ... and then there's like a dozen we have applied to/are going to apply to soon, but still need to wait a few more weeks or months for confirmation/declination haha
But basically we are trying to attend as many events as possible in the Oregon-Washington area. Maybe some in California too if they're not too expenso :)
#i'll post a list of places we'll be once plans are a little more solidified tho ye :D#but yea#so these are gonna be our first cons#that's why we're not going too far from Portland atm#if it goes well then maybe the following year we'll decide if we wanna travel further yeah#random rambling#omg this reminds me#we wanted to apply to kumoricon but it was literally only open to applications for <2 hours bruh....................................#I'm gonna be salty about that for a long time 😭

After watching a random celebrity “What’s in Your Bag?” video, I got curious (or maybe just nosy, lol) and started asking everyone the same question. So, what’s in your bag? Or, if you’re not the type to carry one, what’s in your pockets?
oh sure why not :D it's a fun question
#random rambling#thanks!!!#fun little question to answer as i take a break from the hecticness of being back home after 3 months OTL#so much to catch up on#i'm quite behind answering asks#in general i'll answer them out of order or ....... sometimes just keep them...........#like my little dragon hoard.......#sorry :“”)#i just don't like that they disappear after i answer them- like wth#grr#(there's an easy fix for this - i could just screenshot them i know)#(but it's not the same)

bit of a silly question here but have you ever gotten afraid to draw in a journal like the one you recently shared? like the idea of using the pages "incorrectly" or "wasting" them (or running out right before you get inspiration that might have been "better" than what you'd jotted down)? your art is INCREDIBLE and I know the best way to improve is to do it, all the time, but I struggle getting started for those sorts of fears, and I want to know if you have tips for overcoming that ^^
I don't think it's a silly question, in fact I think it's one of the Ultimate Art Questions haha
Yes I 100% struggled with that in the past; i'm happy to try my best, sharing some personal tips in journaling, specifically! :D
TECHNICAL SIDE:
>> Small simple sketchbook = less intimidating to fill the pages. (Also, easy to carry around)
5x7in Moleskin, and a pilot pen
>> My journal ISN'T a place to prove that I can make pretty pictures. I have separate sketchbooks for that. I use journals to jot down ideas and notes of things I like. (yes i shared a few pages that happened to look nice, but there were 100+ other pages after all d: )
Spontaneous observation is messy and imprecise. But not in a bad way.
Rather than seeing the messiness as "bad/unworthy imperfection," try to see it as a miraculous insight to how you, a unique human being with your unique thoughts and art experience, sees the things you like
My journal process (in general): doodle a pretty cake I ate, a funny bird I saw, some weird dialogue I overheard, stickers, stamps, a character in a book that I want to draw as a dragon,......... scatter them all over the page, then look at the random blocks of empty paper remaining. Fill those up next with another lil quote, or words about the week, or some pretty vines/flowers :) etc. It's like making a collage.
Draw what you actually LIKE + what actually sounds FUN to draw. u can always take photos/save pics of other stuff if it's overwhelming.
>> Find your comfort tools. I love ink. how it looks, feels, etc; I hardly ever use pencil. A sketch that I need to ink over is usually too much work for my journal. I'm just trying to get down ideas before I get bored or get inspired by another thing LOL
[But yeah: pencils can be the perfect tool for someone else. Regular pencils, colored pencils, watercolor pencils... play around with a bunch of basic tools to find your fav.]
EMOTIONAL SIDE:

I highly recommend Lynda Barry's book "Making Comics." She has some lovely, and deeply empathetic things to say about overcoming fear of making "bad" art.

My journal scribblings/therapeutic studies --- someone with 10x the skill could do it better, sure, but they probs wouldn't focus on the same details, or be interested in the same monsters, or be thinking the same thoughts as me.
They won't have the same things to say about their day, won't see the same spindly tree growing from a crumbling brick wall on their walk. etc!
Also! imo this POV isn't an excuse to feel like I don't need to improve my technical skill, but it keeps me happy, fulfilled, and motivated as I'm on that road of improvement. AND it makes me appreciate others' incredible art as their own reflection of the things they love/their own experiences, rather than view it competitively/jealously.
"Drawing is so much more than Good or Bad. It is a language from another part of you." - Lynda Barry
#random rambling#long post#omfg SORRY IT'S SO LONG#but im passionate abt this tbh#i'm very familiar with how feels to be afraid of making bad art - exacerbated in this age of social media#idk i hope i didn't just talk in circles and answer nothing#it really is such a complicated thing#i hope ppl can make art bc it's human.... not bc the only “worthy” art is “good” art#i could write like 20 more pgs about this but i HAVE TO STOP MYSELF#ok#im done#thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!

A quite niche thing, but it was requested several times, so I went ahead and added this tiny, informal-formal permission to use my works in this way. Thank you for the thoughtfulness!

On the hundredth day after the new year the heralds come to the doors of the city, announcing the arrival of the Golden Caravan at the farthest stop of its route ; like every year, citizens and travellers will surely gather at the western door to see it come to pass.
Right behind the banners as customary are the sculptor priests, foremost of the stonemason orders, bringing in this year's votive masterwork for the festivities. The black and white steppe oxen precede the arrival of the head guild architect, charged with the safekeeping of the citizens' sacred geometry. The graduating apprentices and newly welcomed novices walk besides the draftsroom carriage, bearing the icons of the Citizen Architects Guild : ardor and patience. Out of the kilns of the imperial workshops come delicate masterwork sought after the world over ; the sister-ceramists are selected from various key regions of the trade system and bring their local styles to the imperial production. Those workshops are the northernmost stop on the caravan's route.
Behind the masons, the torchbearers announce the arrival of the metalworkers' guilds, chief of which the head goldsmith on a palanquin of her own design. The braseros and forges are continuously tended by guild kindlers as to remain lit throughout the entire voyage of the caravan. Second to last comes the host of the manticore, behind the braseros of the master kindlers. It is believed that the creature requires her caretakers to be pure of heart and most diligent ; the honour is bestowed only on the highest performing apprentices of the smithing guilds. On the last day finally, behind the last of the apprentices, the crones of the chain count the days left to craft, keeping misfortune at work away, and, some even say, Death itself.
